As a french person, it's kinda funny to me when fanfic writers make Alastor speak french, and it's always things like "Bonjour mon cher, je t'aime" you know, typical french words from the main France french most people learn here and there.
The thing is, Alastor knows french creole from Louisiana, which isn't the usual France french most people know. Alastor would speak like "Bonjou konmen to yê?" Or "Mo laimm twa" instead ahah.
Also, there's different versions of french creole, the one from Louisiana is not exactly the same from Antillean Creole or French Guianese Creole. If you want here's an example to what Louisiana Creole sounds like!
So yeah if you want to spice up your fics and be more accurate with your Alastor speaking french creole, dont be afraid to look out for Louisiana Creole expressions instead of the typical french you'd normally use! Makes it more fun and more accurate 💃

TW: period-typical racist attitudes
-
I'm tired of "victim" of racism Alastor. I want to see more of him in all his flaws. Give me "victim and perpetrator" of racism Alastor:
• Being creole and looking mostly white, he gets a lot more leeway with Louisiana folk and that makes him cocky
• He grows up with privledges that darker skinned folk don't get and suddenly that means he's special and better than them
• He starts hanging out with all these white folk and other white-passing creole people and he starts to believe half the things they say about people of color
• (Of course, his mama's still one of the good ones)
• He gets unreasonably offended and defensive anytime someone calls him out for what he is, whether its by other racists clocking him as Not White or people calling him out for his racist attitudes when he's one of them
• He takes pride in his ability to blend in with the white folk, yet simultaneously hates the fact he looks nothing like his mother and everything like his father
• The reason he starts learning to do a radio accent is so he can sound more white. It makes him seem even stranger to most white-folk until he actually becomes a radio host and then its just a symptom of his career
• He lies. He takes pride in his relationship with his mother and her religious practices, but he still lies about her. His mother isn't of color, she isn't a homewrecker, she's a good, christian woman, his father wanted him, yes, they're both white, his mother's Italian, not creole, he's not creole.
• He straightens his hair to look more white (not because he's scared of being seen, not because he hates the reminder of what his mother would think of him now)
• Statistically speaking, murderers tend to keep it within their own race (maybe he kills white people in his own sick way of saying "I'm one of you too!" Maybe he kills other people like him because he hates that reminder and deep down he knows)
He's a sick freak wearing a Normal Man costume and I want see him portrayed as such.

People aren’t saying that cis or perisex folks cannot talk or advocate for transgender or intersex folks. What people are saying is that cis or perisex folks should not be determining what type of experiences an entire group of transgender or intersex people go through. There is a difference between education, uplifting, and advocating for a group and speaking over an entire group of people by determining what a group of people experiences, again a group of people that you are not part of. Also, if you’re listening to part of a group that does not mean you’re listening to the whole. You have to talk to the specific group of people you were talking about to be able to advocate for them and to learn about their lived experiences!

This 1824 home in New Orleans, LA looks dirty and in need of repair. I wasn't prepared for the interior of the 4bd, 4ba, 2,164 sq ft house, but I was wondering why it's $1m, so I took a look.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yowzah! This is beautiful. The original wood, exposed brick, floor, and built-ins are wonderful.
Tumblr media
It's a double shotgun house. See? Here's a perfect example of one that hasn't been renovated. If you shoot a shotgun thru it, the bullet would indeed go straight from the front to the back.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The kitchen remodel is perfect. The color of the cabinetry fits in so beautifully.
Tumblr media
Love the untouched walls with the chippy paint.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pretty, bright blue bedroom with a little desk in the window well.
Tumblr media
Vintage bath remodel. Love that they left the fireplace.
Tumblr media
The other bedroom is smaller, but it's adorable.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The house wasn't renovated, so it's still a classic double shotgun. Here's the other side. The living room brick on this side was painted. It has a lovely fireplace, seems like they bricked up a window, and look at the ceiling beams.
Tumblr media
The kitchen on this side is very different. The whole look of the apt. is different. This one has a bit of an old industrial loft vibe.
Tumblr media
This is mostly original. Look at the door under the stairs.
Tumblr media
This side also has 2 bedrooms. This is the larger one.
Tumblr media
And, this is the cozy smaller one.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The yard is small, as is typical, but it's got a pond and lovely container gardens on a patio.
Tumblr media
View from above.
Tumblr media
The semi-detached home is on a 2,880 sq ft lot.
Tumblr media
According to this vintage photo, the house hasn't changed a bit.

I AM SO TIRED OF PEOPLE ASSOCIATING ALASTOR WITH ONLY JAMBALAYA SO HERE ARE OTHER CREOLE DISHES YOU HEATHENS
Fanfiction and Comic creators, this is for you especially.
Crawfish Étouffée
Tumblr media
This beautiful dish was invented in Breaux Bridge Louisiana, where our favourite radio star is from! Although it's invention is attributed the Herbet Hotel in the 1950s -after Alastors death- it is a classic.
Crawfish Étouffée has a sauce typically made from a blonde roux with that classic cajun seasoning. It contains the Holy Trinity of cajun cooking too: bell peppers, onions and celery. The main meat of this dish is crawfish tails and it is usually served with carbs like cornbread, cajun rice or vegetables such as green beans and potato salad.
It is chock full of flavour, and a filling inexpensive dish for low income families - which I believe Alastor is from.
Some alternatives to the crawfish are chicken and shrimp.
-----
The difference between Étouffée and Gumbo.
These two often get mixed up, and I understand, they're both classic Bayou dishes. Here's how to differentiate them.
Texture: Both dishes use shrimp, chicken, or crawfish tail broth. BUT Jumbo has a thicker consistency, it's made from a dark roux and it tends to use more liquid to remain stew-like.
Flavour: Gumbo and Étouffée both use Cajun seasoning, but due to Étouffées blonde roux, it has a lighter, sweeter taste than the darker, fullness of flavour in Gumbo.
Meat: Gumbo uses a variety of meats at the same time (often shrimp and sausage are key components), as mentioned in the alternatives above, Étouffée typically does not.
-----
2. Red Beans and Rice
Tumblr media
We're on a roll guys! This is another dish from Louisiana! Although, it is specifically associated with New Orleans, where Alastor hosted his radio show. It has a fascinating history, partly due to it's African and French/Spanish routes - But it was also a struggle meal during the Great Depression. It was originally a Creole, not Cajun dish.
(Note: Red Beans and Kidney Beans are different legumes)
This dish also contains the Holy Trinity, as well as bay leaves, oregano, cayenne pepper, garlic powder and more. Its protein comes from Andouille sausages, but like Gumbo, a variety of meats are used. If you want Alastor to be traditional about it, he should make it on a Monday incorporating the left over ham bones from Sunday dinner. It is also complimented with long grain white rice and green beans, amongst many other things.
Considering Alastor witnessed the Stock Market Crash of 1929 -which led to the Great Depression - There is no way he hasn't come across this dish before.
3. Creole Bread Pudding
Tumblr media
The queen of Creole Dessert has arrived. Can you guess where she's from? DING-DING-DING! That's right! New Orleans Louisiana baby! Recipes of this treat have been recorded since 1885, so it suffices to say she's a classic.
Like most bread puddings, it is made by combining stale bread (preferably French), beaten eggs and milk. However, this variation often has an incredible amount of vanilla extract. What it will be complimented with varies from person to person. Some examples are: Whipped meringue and whisky, raisins and apple, or walnuts and butter.
Although not as popular in the modern day, I like to imagine this is something Mimzy, Rosie and Alastor might share together on a day out.
-----
There you go! I hope you enjoyed this - but more importantly I hope this helps people create a more diverse version of those cosy Alastor cooking scenes that I love.
