HBO Chief Casey Bloys Says “A Sameness Of Storytelling” Has Bogged Down Recent Superhero Outings – Deadline
"HBO and Max Content CEO Casey Bloys isn’t buying the notion that audiences have tired of major comic-book tentpoles, despite recent signs of a dropoff at the movie box office and some streaming outlets.
(That's what WBD is now hoping, after they helped to spread the toxic message, through trolls, of superhero fatigue, for years)
“I don’t know that it’s necessarily tentpole fatigue as much as it is a sameness of storytelling,” he said during a 2024 programming showcase in New York.
(What WB really objects to? Diversity, lack of realness. See Hyper violence, and clearly defined good & evil roles)
One of the shows to get significant billing at the event is The Penguin, which stars Colin Farrell in the title tole. The Batman helmer Matt Reeves is an executive producer of the Max Original, whose original spring 2024 launch will be delayed by the WGA and actors strikes..
(Another show surrounding a villain and using a mid actor)
DC is the main supplier of superhero fare on Max, but Bloys largely demurred during a press Q&A when asked for details about the state of the comic book corporate sibling’s production slate, including James Gunn’s new take on Superman. Thematically, though, he said DC definitely fits into his programming philosophy when it comes to keeping genre fare interesting.
(OF course he'd say that)
“I think the key, even within DC, is trying to tell different stories in different styles, to not try to do the same show over and over and over again,” he said. “I would say Peacemaker is a very different show tonally than The Penguin. So, there’s not a uniformity to the storytelling and I think that helps.”
Bloys volunteered a thought about a major rival. “Unfortunately, Marvel, as good as their shows are, there’s probably been a lot of them. That’s one of the advantages we have at Warner Bros. is it’s not just one set of stories. There’s a lot of stories you can go to.”
While Peacemaker, The Penguin and other shows in development are from the DC stable, Bloys said, the slate also features spinoffs from Warner Bros. films like It and Dune, with a Crazy Rich Asians spinoff also in the pipeline.
Let's see here:
Snyderverse, a mess
Wonder Woman 1984, flopped
The Flash, flopped
Black Adam, SO flopped
Aquaman, ABOUT to flop
In the tradition of sportsmanlike behavior in competition, Warner Bros Discovery would be booed off the court. Who the hell are they to give advice to Marvel?
I'd also like to bring up one more thing: Heath Ledger died as a result of playing the Joker. The psychological stress took such a toll on him, that that's when he went on prescriptions.

Since HBO have decided to start straight up lying to us (see here) these are the facts:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thank you @figmentof for these bits of beautiful evidence.
Remember, this was AFTER they cut the show’s budget by 40%, did practically zero promotion or advertising, no awards push or campaigning - nearly all the promo for Season 2 was done by cast and crew off their own backs (million thank yous again to Samba)
Season 2 still hasn’t even aired here in the UK yet!
Don’t let them get away with this bullshit, remember the truth. We won’t forget.

HBO Boss threw shade @ GRRM; DEADLINE: Looking ahead to next Emmy season, you already have House of the Dragon. What do you think about its Emmy chances with fans being divided over Season 2? BLOYS: Well, I’m not sure that the fans were divided over Season 2. DEADLINE: Maybe just George R.R. Martin. BLOYS: Yes, maybe one fan was. But no, the show did really, really well. I expect that will be in competition.
LOL, he wishes it was just one fan.
Casey Bloys is in denial about HotD S2's mixed reaction just as he was for the GoT S8 backlash back then. I know he's protecting his brand but it's saying a lot how he glosses over the audience's true reaction and flat out lies. He should be especially concerned about HOTD currently because it's HBO's most expensive show atm but the viewership ratings have gone down and they really can't afford to lose more of the audience with a big budget show like that. Also HotD is nowhere the phenomenon that GoT was.

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav confirmed Friday that a long-planned Harry Potter series is aiming to debut on Max in 2026.
“We’ve not been shy about our excitement around Harry Potter,” Zaslav told Wall Street analysts on the company’s fourth-quarter earnings call. The exec said he and his colleagues met with Potter creator J.K. Rowling in London a few weeks ago. “Both sides are thrilled to be reigniting this franchise,” he added.
“This new Max Original series will dive deep into each of the iconic books that fans have continued to enjoy for all of these years,” said Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO, HBO & Max Content about the project, which he also assured fans would be “a faithful adaptation.”

Also, re your white lotus post, hbo trying desperately to get gays behind gilded age like there is even the slightest comparison between gilded age and ofmd. Listen I really enjoyed gilded age, but there are two gay men in it, both of whom are white, one of whom is a main character but not the main character. Furthermore, he has to hide his sexuality and marry a woman bc this is set in the 1890s in upper class New York society so obviously he can’t be openly gay. The other gay man is a side character who has next to no character aside from “supportive former lover” to the main gay man. Granted neither of them are made to feel inferior or wrong for being gay (which is obviously an improvement from Julian Fellows’s one other gay character from his other show—who was himself sidelined, even after he accepted he isn’t wrong for being gay through the support of the slew of straight characters around him), but gilded age compared to ofmd? They’re on different planets in different solar systems.
Mannnnnn lol MANNNN I JUST,,,CASEY,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Tumblr media
I know he probably still has a duty to push all of these HBO Originals/Emmy nominated shows, but that was just such an *Roblox OOF noise* type decision with all that's going on.
Because yeah, to me, it very much was a, "Hey, gay people! We know y'all are upset that your gay show written by gay writers for gay people was cancelled, but have you considered: a show written for straight people that's not nearly as diverse with token/sidelined gay characters instead. Hope this helps! <3"

i hope while the SAG and WGA strikes happen other sectors of the entertainment industry continue to unionize as well. i want a caterers strike, a makeup and costuming strike, a cinematographers strike, a musicians strike, a vfx strike, lighting strike, editors strike. i want these execs and producers suffocated from all sides i want their productions starved and stomped on.

It's nice to see we've done Zaslav's job for him.
From all reports Bloys was well positioned to use the cracks we made in Zaslav's leadership of WBD to eventually leverage a takeover and oust Zaslav.
Then came the comments from Bloys at the Emmys. "The numbers weren't there", that was almost assuredly something Zaslav told him to say. Because the average viewer would believe it, that's what studios have always used to justify a cancellation. Calling on Gay Twitter to help The Guilded Age when he knew gay twitter was already fighting for OFMD. At the time I wondered if he did that knowing we'd rebel against it but expecting us to use it as more kindling for the Zaslav bonfire. But instead we shifted focus away from Zaslav & onto Bloys.
Now there's this nonsense with the Popverse article about the marketing team not knowing how to advertise violence. Which we all know is absolute crap. This is the marketing team that successfully advertised Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon, The Last of Us, Barry and more. And as a fandom we've used this to strike, what will probably be, the killing blow against Bloys.
Now there is absolutely no way Bloys can mount a coup against Zaslav. And no one else will try. They've watched as Zaslav successfully weaponized this fandom against his only real opponent.
I'm not saying Bloys doesn't deserve some shit heaped on him. Especially over the Popverse article. That was just sheer stupidity. But he was stuck between the iron fist of Zaslav and the pitchfork wielding fandom.
