So I just did some math, and y’all got me fucked up. I’ve seen so much handwringing in this fandom about the age disparity between Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian’s body because “oh, lwj is soooooo much older than Mo Xuanyu, it ‘basically’ counts as a grooming that wwx was given such a young body and lwj is still attracted to him!”
It’s literally not true. Lan Wangji is around 33 at the start of the present-day plotline. Mo Xuanyu is 27. Y’all are so full of shit.
The math:
Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian are around the same age, give or take some months. They are 15/16 at the start of the Cloud Recesses arc, the discussion conference in Qishan happens less than two years later (16), the Wen indoctrination camp happens definitively when they are 17 (madam yu says so) a year later, then the Sunshot Campaign takes place 2 weeks after that with Lotus Pier’s fall. The war lasts for around a year or two, but wwx mentions he is 20 during the Phoenix Mountain hunt. This means he’s still 20 when he breaks the Wen remnants out of the labor camps 2 months later, and they abscond to the Burial Mounds. For Burial Mounds arc timeline, you have to go by A-Yuan/Lan Sizhui’s. A-Yuan is a teething toddler between one and two (jc deduces) in the Burial Mounds. He’s 15 at the start of the story 13 years later. The Burial Mounds settlement, therefore, lasts about a year. By the time of the siege, wwx should be 21 (again, give or take a few months). Thirteen years later, lwj is 33/34.
Mo Xuanyu, on the other hand, is given a definite age start. He is 14 when he is taken by Jin Guangshan back to Koi Tower. This happens after the siege but  before Nie Mingjue dies (Jin Guangyao mentions this in the chapt. 79 flashback during his argument with Nie Mingjue about Xue Yang), and Nie Mingjue dies a year after the first siege takes place. This would mean that Mo Xuanyu is 14 when the siege happens and, 13 years later, he would be 27 when he sacrifices his body to summon Wei Wuxian.
Mo Xuanyu is not some barely-legal young adult at the start of the story, and the age difference, besides, would be 7 years at most. The fact that this is regular discourse is embarrassing.

Drought, Famine, Sword, Pestilence
1 The word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah concerning the dearth.
2 Judah mourneth, and the gates thereof languish; they are black unto the ground; and the cry of Jerusalem is gone up.
3 And their nobles have sent their little ones to the waters: they came to the pits, and found no water; they returned with their vessels empty; they were ashamed and confounded, and covered their heads.
4 Because the ground is chapt, for there was no rain in the earth, the plowmen were ashamed, they covered their heads.
5 Yea, the hind also calved in the field, and forsook it, because there was no grass.
6 And the wild asses did stand in the high places, they snuffed up the wind like dragons; their eyes did fail, because there was no grass.
7 O Lord, though our iniquities testify against us, do thou it for thy name's sake: for our backslidings are many; we have sinned against thee.
8 O the hope of Israel, the saviour thereof in time of trouble, why shouldest thou be as a stranger in the land, and as a wayfaring man that turneth aside to tarry for a night?
9 Why shouldest thou be as a man astonied, as a mighty man that cannot save? yet thou, O Lord, art in the midst of us, and we are called by thy name; leave us not.
10 Thus saith the Lord unto this people, Thus have they loved to wander, they have not refrained their feet, therefore the Lord doth not accept them; he will now remember their iniquity, and visit their sins.
11 Then said the Lord unto me, Pray not for this people for their good.
12 When they fast, I will not hear their cry; and when they offer burnt offering and an oblation, I will not accept them: but I will consume them by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence.
13 Then said I, Ah, Lord God! behold, the prophets say unto them, Ye shall not see the sword, neither shall ye have famine; but I will give you assured peace in this place.
14 Then the Lord said unto me, The prophets prophesy lies in my name: I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, neither spake unto them: they prophesy unto you a false vision and divination, and a thing of nought, and the deceit of their heart.
15 Therefore thus saith the Lord concerning the prophets that prophesy in my name, and I sent them not, yet they say, Sword and famine shall not be in this land; By sword and famine shall those prophets be consumed.
16 And the people to whom they prophesy shall be cast out in the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and the sword; and they shall have none to bury them, them, their wives, nor their sons, nor their daughters: for I will pour their wickedness upon them.
17 Therefore thou shalt say this word unto them; Let mine eyes run down with tears night and day, and let them not cease: for the virgin daughter of my people is broken with a great breach, with a very grievous blow.
18 If I go forth into the field, then behold the slain with the sword! and if I enter into the city, then behold them that are sick with famine! yea, both the prophet and the priest go about into a land that they know not.
19 Hast thou utterly rejected Judah? hath thy soul lothed Zion? why hast thou smitten us, and there is no healing for us? we looked for peace, and there is no good; and for the time of healing, and behold trouble!
20 We acknowledge, O Lord, our wickedness, and the iniquity of our fathers: for we have sinned against thee.
21 Do not abhor us, for thy name's sake, do not disgrace the throne of thy glory: remember, break not thy covenant with us.
22 Are there any among the vanities of the Gentiles that can cause rain? or can the heavens give showers? art not thou he, O Lord our God? therefore we will wait upon thee: for thou hast made all these things. — Jeremiah 14 | King James Version (KJV) The King James Version Bible is in the public domain. Seven: Chapter Nine

ChApt!er Nin3
“You look nice,” Adelicia says. There’s a tone under her voice that’s curt, sour, almost poisonous. Her weathered hands with her long fingers reach out to play with the wisps of my bangs around my jaw. Even though I don’t need to breathe, I take in a sharp intake of air and stiffen upright. I can’t tell if I’m nervous about receiving a compliment, or if I should just accept it.
“Detective Kennedy says I look like a human now,” I tell her.
“You do.” Adelicia rips out a single string of my synthetic hair with a snap. I don’t like that she did that. “You’re doing this for… a stakeout?” she says as she rolls the hair between her fingertips.
          “Yes, Adelicia.”
“How is your relationship with the Detective going?”
If I knew myself, it would probably solve a lot of my own questions. My led goes yellow as I think.
This visit, Adelicia is wearing a deep red skirt and blazer. Matching lipstick lies on her thin lips. The color makes her stand out against the white, blockish architecture of the room. Adelicia always looks classy and proper, like a politician I can’t place the name of.
I decide to be ambiguous. “It’s more or less the same.”
Adelicia rubs her fingertips together, and the hair falls to the floor with a flutter. “You seemed very close to catching that Android in the apartment,” she says lowly. If I had a heart, it would’ve dropped to my stomach at this point.
“Exception Androids are unpredictable,” I tell her, trying my best not to replay the memory of me finding him in the attic. She might be able to see if I do. “Their patterns and behaviors are completely erratic.”
“Are they?” she counters coldly. Before I can respond, she cuts me off. “You’re dismissed.”
          “Tin Fuck! Tin Fuck!”
My eyes open slowly, almost tiredly. Celeste’s fingers snap in front of my face unpleasantly, but that’s no surprise compared to everything else she does.
The scene in front of me is uncomplicated. I’m in the back seat of Detective Kennedy’s car. Cal is looking at me through his rearview mirror, looking something between confused and concerned. Celeste, still dressed like a hooker, has turned around in her passengers seat to snap her fingers in front of my face. Outside, I can see a brick, partially burned down apartment building and the dark night of Seattle. An airplane flies over head with blinking lights.
“What the fuck were you doing?” she spits at me, rolling her eyes. I blink once before answering her.
          “Making a report.”
“Again? About what? Something wrong with your circuits?”
I’m still something like drowsy after coming out of the inside of my brain. Luckily, Cal comes to my rescue.
“Ease off,” he says, softly but still a little rudely. Just this once though, it’s not directed at me. It makes me smirk to myself when Celeste actually turns back in her seat with a huff.
“Icarus asks me for updates as we continue our investigation,” I say out loud. “I enter a virtual interface in my program to relay information.”
“So what’s gonna happen when you’re done with the investigation then?” Celeste asks, picking at her nails. In fairness to her, it’s probably the most relevant thing she’s ever said.
“Depends on how the investigation ends.”
“What do you mean?” Cal asks, still looking at me through the mirror. His gray eyes are the color of solid steel.
“It’s very possible I’ll be deactivated and disassembled to understand why I failed.”
“I’d hate to be you then,” says Celeste.
Oh yeah? Well at least I can actually get Cal’s attention. I don’t have to dress like a whore for him to look at me.
Software InsTabiLIty ^
Where did that come from? I mean… I partly don’t mind it, but it’s definitely not a part of my programming.
“So,” Cal begins with a sigh. His eyes shift to the apartment building in front of us tiredly. I can see the dark bags under his eyes. I kind of like them though. They give him character. “You got any Android tricks for us?”
Celeste twists around in her seat again like a giddy teenager. “Can Androids have sex?”
“Eww,” Cal groans out, disgusted. “Please don’t answer that.”
I have to answer. A human asked me a question. I’m required to help them find the answer. Especially since I know what it is.
“There are Androids in sex clubs,” I tell her. “Of course.”
“I’m not talking about that. I’m talking about you.”
Oh. This isn’t about me, really. This is about Celeste. This is about Celeste trying to embarrass me and showing Cal what a real girl is.
I look like a girl. I sound like a girl. I behave as a girl. But I’m not a girl. I’m a piece of plastic intimidating a girl. Celeste is the real thing.
“I have functional genitalia, yes.” Cal coughs roughly. “It is in case I needed to lure a suspect, or gain their trust.”
“But you can’t have kids, can you?” Celeste asks with an eyebrow raised. She seems so proud of herself now.
          “No. No Android can-”
“I really would hate to be you.” Then Celeste turns back around in her seat with a satisfied smirk, and a silence falls over the car.
My eyes shift back and forth as I replay her words in my mind. I can’t have kids. It’s not that I want kids, or that I’ve been created to want to have kids, but that Celeste has bested me in proving something to Cal. I know it’s a product of jealousy- a messy human emotion I have no desire to have- but I still dislike it. I want to work well with Cal. It’s necessary for the case.
“Cal, have you listened to any new music lately?” Celeste offers.
Cal sighs, his shoulders dropping as he exhales. “Same thing really. Black Sabbath and Bad Brains.”
Celeste lets out a feminine laugh. “That stuff is so old, Cal! You’ve got to listen to some of my stuff sometime.”
          Cal grunts in response.
“I like Black Sabbath,” I say happily after listening to every single song they’ve ever made in under a minute. I can feel Celeste’s eyes narrow to slits in anger.
“You listen to Black Sabbath?” Cal questions with raised eyebrows.
“Well… I’d like to,” I admit. Cal swallows and softens his gaze.

“Someone’s entering the building,” Celeste gasps, leaning forward. I turn my attention back to the building. I can just make out a moving form in the light.
“Aleks, is it an Android?” Cal quips.
I narrow my eyes and try to analyze, but I only receive an error message. “I can’t tell,” I say. “It’s too dark.”
After another second of watching, Cal’s leadership streak takes its hold. “Celeste, stay here and cover the entrance and side exit. Robocop, you’re with me.”
“What’re you going to do?” Celeste asks as Cal makes sure his gun is on safety.
“We gotta get Robocop a clear read on it. Make sure it’s an Android.”
I remove myself from the car. I don’t have to listen to the rest of the conversation to understand that it ends with a huff on Celeste’s end. By now, the figure has disappeared through the door of the place.
Cal exits the car himself, closing the door quietly. Holding his gun with two hands, he begins to move forward. “Stay behind me,” he whispers.
          “Got it,” I agree.
We enter the building with a creak. The door makes a loud noise that we couldn’t stop if we wanted to. Similar to the building we found Bryan in, the elevator is covered in an ‘OUT OF ORDER’ sign and the floor is littered with trash. I want to ask Cal why nobody ever came into these buildings to clean them, but I know that could give away our position. I can’t do anything else to jeopardize this mission.
Cal nudges his head to the stairs. I follow him silently, avoiding the broken glass crunching under our feet. Moving cautiously, Cal begins his journey upwards.
“See anything?” he asks as we reach the top of the steps. I analyze the area around. I can see a lot of things that he doesn’t want to know about, but a few things that are relevant to our investigation.
“Binary Blood,” I whisper. “On that wall.”
          “Does it lead somewhere?”
Right as I’m about to answer, a force tackles the both of us to the ground from the direction I was about to point to. I hit the back of my head against the wall, discombobulating me for a moment as I struggle to make the shadow in front of me into a real person. I can see a 3 swirling led lights. After that, I only need a second to memorize the Androids details and serial numbers in the darkness.
The herd of them turns away from me as I sit up, keeping my eyes locked on them. They’re trying to get away, but I won’t let them.
A thick stream of light enters into the room just then. To my left, the door to the fire exit has been slammed open. I can see a female Android with brown hair struggle with a confused Cal for a moment. Despite his fighting back, she gets the upper hand with a kick between his legs and a correctly placed push of her hands.
Cal stumbles back and falls over the railing, with a hand gripping to the side. The fall from this height would kill him if he let go.
The Android whirls around to look at me. Her led is spinning red, her short brown hair waving slightly in the night air. She looks alarmed, but not regretful. Scared of me, maybe. It doesn’t matter if she runs. I have her serial number, and I’ll catch her.
“Aleks,” a strained voice calls from over the metal railing of the fire escape. “Get her.”
The female Android quivers her lip as she looks at me, like a deer in the headlights fumbling for an explanation. She’s pulled from her thoughts though, because a voice from below calls out “Clem! Come on!” Clem stumbles down the stairs of the fire escape.
Back in front of me, the three Androids I’d already identified have broken open the window at the end of the hallway, and are preparing to stuff themselves down it. If I don’t get over their now, they will escape.           Cal has a 79% chance of survival.
Without really thinking, I dive through the fire exit. I throw my hand over the side of the railing. Cal grips it after a second, his sweaty palms slipping against mine. I heave up, putting my weight into my knees and back to pull him over. With me as leverage, Cal finally gets his footing back and falls over the side and onto the metal flooring. In the distance, six Android silhouettes climb over a metal fence, eventually disappearing into the night.
“Are you alright?” I ask immediately.
S0ftwar3 1!nsTabiL!Ity ^^
Cal closes his eyes tight and focuses on regaining his breath. His heart rate is rapid, his adrenaline pumping.
          “I… told… you… to go… after… it…” he says in between heavy breaths.
I look in the direction of the fence. The last of the Androids have dissolved into the darkness of Seattle by now. I don’t offer any answer to the Detective.
Cal’s breathing slowly starts to become more even. He puts his arm over his eyes as his breath comes out in puffs of cold air. “You would’ve caught them if it weren’t for me.”
“I got their identification and serial numbers,” I offer. “Most of them.”
Cal is silent for another minute. His heart rate lowers itself, breathing still heavy but not as rapid. “You saved my life.”
The odds were 8/10. I shouldn’t have done what I did. It could’ve costed us this case.
Cal scoffs again, a wicked smile gracing his features. “A fucking Android saved my life.”
“Yeah,” I say, watching his form. “I guess so.”
“Hey Aleks?” Cal calls out. He removes his arm from over his eyes but still keeps them shut. His chest rises and falls. His cheeks are dusted pink from the chilly October weather.
          “Yes, Detective?”
          Silence.
          “No… nothing.”

what mdzs english translation do you recommend?
Well, only exr and 7seas completed the translation in full, but my choice of translation is fanyiyi for until theirs ends, boat-full-of-lotus-pods for chapts. 79-110, and exr for everything not covered. I explain why here. If you want to read a complete translation by just one team, I'd still prefer exr over 7seas, but just know that the exr version also has its own issues (not as bad as 7seas), which is why it would not be my preferred except that it's finished and currently the most widely-read version.

3,000 or 5,000: What’s the Difference?
How many cultivators did Wei Wuxian actually kill at the Nightless City bloodbath? From the mouths of gossiping cultivators directly after the first siege:
“…Don’t you remember when he annihilated more than 3,000 high level cultivators?”
“Wasn’t it 5,000?”
“3,000 or 5,000, one or the other. I think 5,000’s more likely.”
—Chapt. 1: Rebirth, fanyiyi
From the mouths of a married civilian couple 13 years later, in the present-day timeline:
Her husband, “Who could possibly guarantee that? When he killed over three thousand people in Qishan, I was very young, but I can still remember that back then, not only the immortals who cultivated, even normal people were scared of him. He’s a bloodlusting demon who has no heart.”
—Chapt. 67: Tenderness, exr
From the narrator speaking on the aftermath of the Nightless City bloodbath:
The bloodbath of Nightless City, legendarily, was a bloody battle in which the YiLing Patriarch, Wei WuXian, slaughtered over three thousand people during the night of the pledge conference on his own. Some said that it was five thousand as well. No matter three or five, one thing was for sure—in that night, the ruins of Nightless City became a gory hell in Wei WuXian’s hands.
—Chapt. 79: Loyalty, exr
From Wei Wuxian’s own mouth at Nightless City before it became a bloodbath:
What came out was indeed Wei WuXian’s voice, but he spoke in a strange tone, “Why should I dare not show myself here? Do you people here even add up to three thousand? Don’t forget that back in the Sunshot Campaign, let alone three thousand, I’ve fought against five thousand on my own before. And by appearing here, haven’t I granted your wish? No need for you to come all the way to my home tomorrow to scatter my ashes.”
—Chapt. 78: Nightfall, exr
So there you have it: the number of victims at the Nightless City bloodbath cannot number above three thousand, as that number in and of itself is a rounding up of the amount of cultivators present at the banquet in total. Notice that in Wei Wuxian’s speech, he says that he brought down five thousand Wen-aligned cultivators on his own, which is probably where the embellishment that he killed five thousand cultivators at the Nightless City bloodbath was born from. However, at the second siege, when the group of cultivators—including survivors of the bloodbath—charge Wei Wuxian with slaughtering “three thousand” cultivators, this is what he has to say:
Wei WuXian interrupted him, “Three thousand people? There were indeed three thousand cultivators present that night at Nightless City, but so too were the leaders the sects and many of their elites. With all of them present, could I have really killed all of the three thousand people? Are you thinking too highly of me, or are you looking down on them?”...
...“It’s not that I want to bargain about such a thing, but that I don’t want my charges to be doubled just because of some words from another. I won’t shoulder what I didn’t do.”
—Chapt. 79: Loyalty, exr
Wei Wuxian rightfully points out that for the fact that he was being charged with massacring three thousand cultivators, and only three thousand were gathered at Nightless City tops, along with the fact that many of the attendees of the Nightless City banquet are also present at the second siege 13 years later, it is illogical to claim that he had killed them all or even a good portion of them. So, why does this matter?
In revealing the lie within the number of deaths reported for the Nightless City bloodbath, Wei Wuxian has both revealed the cultivation world’s willingness to spread blatant lies within minor truths in order to conceal their own immoral actions as well as showed how their exaggeration of his crimes serve to fuel their continued hatred of him. The Nightless City bloodbath was an act of betrayal on the “righteous” clans part, yet even in his defense in the midst of unimaginable despair—and remembering that he has wiped out larger armies than the remaining clans’ then coalition, so much so that no cultivator who went up against him in the Sunshot Campaign lived to even report what he looked like to their fellow allies—Wei Wuxian still... managed to keep a fair amount of people alive. And now, 13 years later, Wei Wuxian refuses to bow to this slander. He didn’t slaughter five thousand cultivators at Nightless City. He didn’t even slaughter three thousand. And he will not accept these false charges on his head in the name of clans’ vengeance, any longer.
One of the greatest accusations levied against the accursed Yiling Laozu is, at last, exposed for the lie that it is, and it is only one of many narrative-changing reveals the story has to offer.

Text
Of the thousand gathered here, only a handful of twenty people or so harbored personal grudges against Wei WuXian. The rest had all came here without a second thought the moment they’d heard about the siege. They’d come here out of the righteousness of their hearts to support the leading forces, intending to slay a few fierce corpses along the way, make a few names or stories for themselves down the road. But when it came down to sacrificing their lives, not many were actually willing to pay the price.
“We only joined the bandwagon cause we thought it was a great get-famous-quick scheme; we didn’t know that we’de actually have to risk our lives!” What a bunch of losers, but I guess they do so love that mob mentality: bullying the weak (”weak” in wwx’s case) and outnumbered while singing your own praises.
—Chapt. 79: “Core” Part 1, boat-full-of-lotus-pods
