Star Wars Rambles
The Cloak of Darkness 1x09
Holy shit! Gree's sassing Nute Gunray! That's fantastic!
Dooku defending Ventress to Sidious. Interesting.
Okay, why am I thinking that the Republic guys sent to pick up Gunray are corrupt/going to betray them? Maybe I'm just cynical.
WTF?!? Okay, Ahsoka losing it and threatening Gunray with a lit saber? WTF? Cool it Snips! I get that he's awful, but that's going a bit too far! Also, it looked like Luminara was on the right track to get him to open up. It may not be as immediate, but it should bear fruit!
Okay, so it may have worked? But I'm with Luminara, on this one, about not using terror. And even if Ahsoka didn't mean it, he doesn't know that.
Yikes. The super battle droids are not good. Poor Green squad.
Oh shit, that poor dude just got decapitated.
Okay, that exchange between the trooper and the droid was adorable. (Interesting foil. Droids don't like to be called by their nicknames, but clones have their own names.)
Not sure I like Ventress' actions, but she's cool to watch.
Luminara is a badass.
Still don't trust this captain. And how come Ventress just knocked out the two Senate Guards instead of killing them?
Also a little concerned with how ready Ahsoka is to leap for violence. Or, at least suggesting murder. Oh well.
Okay, maybe I'm wrong about captain guy.
So, I'm of two minds here. On the one hand, I think Ahsoka is a little too eager to look before she leaps and act rashly, and she should give Luminara a bit more credit. On the other hand, it does sound like Ahsoka has faced Ventress before (I'm just going by episode order, so I may be missing things.) and she may have experience. I don't know.
Luminara may have gotten a face full of hot steam, but looks like Ventress is the one who just got BURNED!
Okay, I am probably wrong about the Captain. I do like how, even though Gree leans more towards letting Luminara handle it, he still tells Ahsoka to call if she needs help.
Okay, guess Ahsoka was right about helping Luminara.
BUT SO WAS I ABOUT THE CAPTAIN! I FUCKING CALLED IT, I KNEW HE WAS DIRTY, I FUCKING KNEW IT! GREE, KICK HIS ASS!
Awww, the droid survived! Also, I love Luminara's little face quirk. She goes from fierce to fond so subtly but so clearly, it's adorable.
And now the captain's treachery ruined a nice bonding moment between Luminara and Ahsoka! (Don't agree with Luminara calling herself a foo, the captain fooled all of them.) (Also, now that I'm thinking of it, he kind of sounds like Charming from the Shrek movies. Or is that just generic Britishness accent?)
Captain: He won't shoot!
Gree: You wanna bet?
Okay, I despise his comment about 'A good soldier doing what he thinks is right' and how he uses it to justify betrayal. Cause he's not doing what's right, he's being selfish. He's prioritizing his wants over the needs of everyone.
Ventress stabs captain.
Deadpan: Wow. Totally did not see that coming.
Interesting foreshadowing of Vader, with Yoda talking of traitors and glancing at Anakin.
Whoo, this one was a bit longer! Guess I just had more to say!

So Paul has that black cloak that he wears for the end of the movie, right? We all know the one.
The first time he has it on is after he wakes up from drinking the Water of Life, in the "we're Harkonnens" conversation with Jessica. He wears it for the rest of the movie.
I never particularly questioned how this cloak showed up on the scene cause like, we get it. It came from the Symbolism Closet. Black is associated with the Harkonnens, sure, but it's also the color of the Atreides formal dress Paul wears in Part One and the color the Bene Gesserit Reverend Mother wears. Black is the color of power.
But then I was looking at this production photo from the Part Two art book:
and now I'm obsessed with the idea of the cloak being one of the layers of Jessica's costume--either the dark layer that we can see under the white/gray and brownish fabric, or the layer under that.
Just imagine her wrapping him up in it at some point, as he's recovering from being mostly dead. It's motherly and intimate and it might seem like comfort. But also she's claiming him, because she won. Giving him one layer of the many many layers of fabric that she's wearing by the end, isolating her from everyone else. Literally putting the mantle of power on his shoulders and making it look like love.
