#Compact Charging Case

i’m not sure if this is something that people are interested in, but i kind of wanted to make this as a personal thing anyway in case i end up losing all of my occult related mods one day. these are mods for occult sims that i have in my game and either can’t live without, or am excited to try out myself!

this is heavily inspired by many other wonderful must have mod lists, so thank you to everyone who has made one of these as this post will follow a similar layout and structure and inspired me to make my own. i’ll try my best to keep this post up to date! - updated 17th august 2024.

disclaimer: there will always be the possibility that some of these mods are outdated or conflict with each other, so please be mindful of that. i’ll be doing my best to remove links & mention incompatibilities where necessary.

vampires.

bloody bites & wounds. by mizoreyukii feeding from other sims is a messy activity. warning: very gory!

vampire bloodlines. by baniduhaine makes vampire bloodlines similar to spellcaster bloodlines, giving vampire offspring different strengths of the bloodline which affects their xp, energy and thirst.

vampire initiation ritual. by ilkavelle just a fun little mod that adds an event focused around turning a sim into a vampire.

vampire blood bank. by laurelie i haven’t used this one myself yet, but it seems exciting. it supposedly allows vampires to extract blood from sims to create plasma/blood packs instead of biting them to feed. vampires can also extract their own blood to give to humans to turn them.

vampires have bladders too! by daffodilyily this one might seem silly but i often find vampires too “easy” because of their different motives, so adding one back helps with keeping me challenged when taking care of them.

moonstone protection. by aaronsimboy moonstones from crystal creations can be made into jewelry and gives vampires protection from sunlight when worn.

alluring visage fog begone. by drhouse93 removes the obnoxious pink cloud when a vampire uses alluring visage, without removing the affect it has on other sims.

vampire weakness freedom. by vudou removes the restriction of needing to add weaknesses to your vampires when giving them new powers.

vampire mods. by nv. games this is a lovely list of various mods that changes things for vampires such as no hissing, thirst gained from red nectars, autonomous plasma fruit consumption and fated mates. there’s much more though so i highly recommend taking a look!

spellcasters.

alchemy overhaul. by srslysims allows other sims (not just spellcasters) to create potions, herbalism recipes to be made with a cauldron and the ability to purchase alchemy ingredients via a computer.

potions rework. by kuttoe makes potion making more challenging by forcing spellcasters to venture out to places like selvadorada and granite falls to find ingredients for higher level potions. also removes the immortal glow and nerfs the needs potion. (conflicts with srslysims’ alchemy overhaul)

spellcaster tweaks. by kuttoe this mod also makes spellcasting more challenging and rewarding, nerfing some spells and changing how charges work.

forbidden spells. by kuttoe evil spellcasters!!!

functional spellbook. by deathpoke1qa a mod that i find to be absolutely essential when playing with spellcasters. it allows them to learn spells from each specialty at a compact, standing spellbook.

kids can perform magic. by zulf i’m still not sure if this mod is updated but i intend to keep it here in hopes it has been/will be! (may be broken)

broomstick & wand maker careers. by ilkavelle allows spellcasters to make broomsticks and wands via the woodworking table, and adds a career!

werewolves.

no relationship loss from werewolf reactions. by shayminnasakura sims are now pretty chill with their werewolf friends howling and transforming right beside them.

less furious werewolves. by llazyneiph it seems that werewolves’ fury meters fill up way too quickly so this seems like a handy mod to have. (i haven’t played with werewolves yet)

fated mate changes. by zafireria changes the way a werewolf can find their fated mate. previously, the werewolf would have to use a romantic interaction to discover if a sim is their fated mate. now this mod can make it so that any interaction can find their fated mate.

werewolf tweaks. & club activities. by chipped includes mods such as venomous bites for vampires, adding wolfsbane to drinks to protect sims from werewolves and more.

werewolf bloodlines. by baniduhaine basically the same as the other bloodline mods included here, but for werewolves.

various occult mods.

a section of mods that either adds new occults in game or caters to multiple/ones that don’t have a special section in this list.

secret occults. by janesimsten a mod for all occults apart from ghosts, allowing sims to decide whether they believe in the occult or not and the ability to discover other occult sims. it basically gives the definition of an occult sim more meaning.

supernatural traits. by vickysims this is a great mod that allows you to add special traits to your supernatural sims. these can either add depth to a pre-existing occult sim (i.e, a vampire with a haunted trait) or make new occults all together (sort of).

alien bloodlines. by baniduhaine this basically just adds bloodlines similar to those that spellcasters have to aliens, but i definitely think it’s worth using if you play with aliens!

ghastly ghosts. by chipped makes the ghost occult more unique, allowing only certain sims to see ghosts and a few new interactions.

plantsim mod. by naunakht i’ve never touched plantsims in ts4 but i’m sure some people like them, so i included this mod that i found which gives them more depth, interactions and removes their unique appearance.

fairies vs. witches. by spinningplumbobs i’m not personally a fairy fan but i’d be silly not to include this mod as it seems so many people desperately want fairies in the game, and this mod seems to do exactly that!

expanded mermaids. by spinningplumbobs gives mermaids the treatment they deserve by adding a handful of extra interactions for them! including ocean interactions, rankings, perks and a few special objects.

merfolk cove. by simularity adds a lot trait that allows merfolks to gather and makes them trust regular sims upon visiting.

occult food mods.

this is my personal favorite section as i love food that’s specific to certain occults, especially vampires.

plasma fruit recipes. by catdevpete basically adds a bunch of plasma recipes based off pre-existing regular foods in game such as plasma noodles & plasma pancakes. yum.

occult recipe book. by tianasims these recipes look so darn cute! it includes recipes that increases fertility for spellcasters, a special dish for werewolves that will gross out regular sims, and other magical-themed foods.

cooking overhaul. by srslysims this is a general cooking overhaul that i highly recommend regardless, but it features a few cute plasma recipes that you can see screenshots of here.

red plasma fruit override. by natalia-auditore makes purple plasma things red instead.

icemunmun recipes. if you search for “plasma” or “occult” on this patreon page, you’ll be able to find a handful of well made recipes that are specific to certain occults!

Now that I’m home and avoiding work, notes from the Europe trip in terms of travel and...for lack of a better word self-care, but it’s really more like, accessibility centered around being a) anxious and b) over forty. 

-- The ability to do laundry was nice. I’d anticipated it would be helpful but not nearly as helpful as it was. Also having a fridge was super convenient, and having an oven was a nice perk in London and Rome. 

-- I planned to be able to do laundry so I only brought five days’ worth of clothes, and some were ‘disposable’ which was also convenient -- I brought my oldest underwear that I would have thrown out soon anyway, an extremely old pajama shirt, and at least one pair of trousers that was, as it were, on its last legs. That all worked fantastically; when I ran out of room in the suitcase on the last day of the trip I just tossed the trousers, and I’d already thrown out most of the underwear. 

-- I was more self-conscious than anticipated about my language limitations, which led to a lot of avoidance -- not anything I really wanted to do, like museums and the football match, but things I could have done, like eating out or going into shops. It was mostly to do with the look people got on hearing English out of my mouth. So either I need to learn more basic phrases or be more prepared for the look. (To be fair, in Rome I would say mi dispiace, sono American and they’d immediately be cool.) 

-- My stash of granola/protein bars was clutch, and going to a grocery store for staples was also very helpful. Turns out wherever you go, even if they don’t have Diet Coke, they almost always have babybel cheese.

-- No day trips between cities. Going from London to Cambridge and back for the day was great; going from London to Amsterdam to Paris in a single day was not. If I’m going somewhere new and not going back somewhere familiar at end of day, I need to get there, sleep, have a full day there, and leave either that evening or the following morning at minimum.

-- Relatedly: I don’t have to do this thing anymore where I book early departures or late arrivals because they’re cheap and don’t use up my vacation time. They only make me anxious. From now on even if it ‘wastes’ a day, I only book travel that departs and arrives during daylight hours. It’s always fine, nothing bad happens, but the anxiety is Too Much.  

-- The tablet and bluetooth keyboard in lieu of a laptop worked well. It wasn’t much lighter or more compact, but I was less worried about theft and because it charged via USB I didn’t have to wrangle an extra cord, I could just unplug my phone and plug the tablet in. That configuration also fit in my very small bag where a laptop wouldn’t, so I could carry it in my bag while in transit and not have to get my luggage out of the rack. 

-- The Very Small Bag (a map case) worked fine but while I didn’t need a bigger one I could have used one with more pockets. I was always losing the exact thing I needed in the jumble at the bottom of the bag. I think for longer trips I prefer a small messenger bag that has both a reasonable main cargo compartment but also pockets for stuff like passport and spare battery. 

Overall, a lot of the stuff I’d planned went off well, so at this point it’s less about logistics -- what to pack, how to pack it -- than it is about arranging things to lower anxiety and make transitions easier. That kind of thing sometimes you just need to experience in order to know how to handle it, so that’s fine. Next time I won’t be angry about Amsterdam when it’s not Amsterdam’s fault, or stuck waiting for a bus late at night at Rome Termini.

cybertronian anatomy ?? (headcanons)

FAIR WARNING, I STILL DONT KNOW THE MOST ABT TRANSFORMERS, I KNOW THERES A TCOG AND A SPARK BUT THATS IT AND ALSO WHILE I DID TAKE ANATOMY CLASS I FORGOT A BIT OF IT BUT and doesnt help I know next to nothing abt mechanics stuff

and another fair warning, the headcanons are canon to ME when I put them in the context of my continuity and exist bcuz I thought of it to fit in my continuity/my designs bcuz fuck it we ball

DENTA/TEETH/DIGESTIVE SYSTEM?

I think the purpose of their denta would not to chew but to bite into energon. Theyre metal beings, that are BIG in most cases, I believe they have a bite force strong enough enough to bite into energon in its mineral state.

For denta appearance, (while I dont know the best shape there is to cut into rock) would be sharp teeth, yknow pointed teeth. Some cybertronians have sharp pointed teeth and then there are some who dont. Well heres the kicker since these guys can also transform, I feel like they can alter their denta shape as well. highly compacted plates that can loosen and move when need be or something. Their sharp teeth can pop out like that HTTYD scene with Toothless popping out his teeth

They dont have tongues, cuz they dont taste, or use it to swallow, or use it to talk. They just kinda. Lean their helms back to get energon into their throats, like birds!!

And they dont need a tongue to formulate their speech, for their voice box is like, a literal box that generates sound waves that is the cybertronians voice. A cybertronian moves their mouth as to not muffle their voice.

While their denta is not designed to chew, in order to get energon into a shape/size that can get to their version of stomachs, their throats grind the energon into smaller bits so it can travel easier through their esophagus. or whatever the cybertronian equivalent is.

Once the energon gets to their stomachs, its melted down into a liquid state so it can flow to the spark where it is essentially "charged" and then can flow throughout tubes and circuits and power their bodies/frames and systems. And I believe, the cybertronians were created in such a way that they can utilize every component of energon so nothing goes to waste.

Cybertronians were created before the technology was made that could convert energon into a liquid state. That tech was made as to cut down digestive time and save energy that could be used for other things.

SKIN/INTEGUMENTARY SYSTEM

idk what cybertronian skin is called and I barely remember what the integumentary system is other than its skin it helps regulate body temp and helps fight infection?

ANYWAYS their skin is like a very flexible metal, its thinner in parts where the frame has more armor, but thicker in places that dont have armor to compensate for the lack of armor.

Here in this thin layer of metal are receptors that can sense touch and pain, and like idk abt this part but wanna say there is a thin layer of wire net/mesh that can either warm up or cool down as a way to assist the cybertronians ventilation system (ventilation system does most of the work when cooling down the frame)

This layer can repair itself over time. It can also be replaced with external metal if the layer is too damaged. During the early times of the War for Cybertron injuries were repaired with external metal. This external metal did not include touch/pain receptors or the wire net/mesh that assists with temp regulation. Those who were frequently repaired with this external metal have some resistance to pain but have the tendency to overheat, in severe cases need an external source to cool down their frames. ie, dipping in water

Cybertronians need to stay at a constant temp, normally a LOT warmer than we do, in order to keep the energon in a liquid state and stay warm during the nights on Cybertron. If they get too cold the energon can solidify again and cause blockage in circuits and tubing. But if their frames get too hot, the processor can fry, circuits can melt, etc

EXTRA/HALFBAKED HEADCANONS

these I dont have detailed thought on atleast yet, but

They wouldnt have noses. they dont breathe, or smell, so.

They dont have ANY reproductive organs, internal or external. They cannot reproduce with eachother or by themselves. their numbers only increase bcuz of the Allspark

AND THATS ALL I HAVE rn I'd like to state here and now that these headcanons definitely apply to all of my characters and my continuity versions of canon characters. and like, no one has to agree with them or use them but it's also cool if someone does

What are the first things that someone living in a small flat in a city can do to make it as Practically Solarpunk as possible?

This is an excellent question! And I apologize for taking so long to answer it, I wanted to make sure my response was thorough. This topic really deserves its own masterpost (which has now gone on my list of posts to write).

The answer depends on a lot of factors (do you have a patio or balcony? Does your flat get any natural light? Do you live with other people who would resist anything too "out there"? etc.). Here's what I personally would do starting from zero to make my apartment more Practically Solarpunk.

Set the thermostat low in winter and high in summer to reduce energy use. Go by the "cool/heat the person, not the space" principle, which means lots of layers, blankets, and hot water bottles (or similar) when it's cold and loose clothing, damp towels, and lots of fans when it's hot. Bonus: DRAMATICALLY recuces utility bills, especially if you have electric heat.

Put up curtains. Especially if you have a lot of windows or big windows, putting up thick curtains will help regulate the temperature inside. If it’s hot out, close the curtains over windows getting sunlight to prevent it from warming up your place. If it’s cold out, keep the curtains closed whenever possible to insulate from the cold (glass transfers temperature really well and it will mitigate any drafts).

Grow plants. I’m partial to herbs and other things you can eat. If you have a patio and the weather is good, grow them outdoors. If not, a sunny windowsill works fine.

Start bokashi composting. It's fast, compact, mostly smell-free, and a great way to reduce your waste and get nice dirt for your plants. You do need dirt somewhere to finish the process, but it doesn't have to be a yard - I keep a couple 5-gallon buckets of dirt on my patio for this purpose.

Experiment with solar energy. How much you are able to do with that will depend on how much time/money you want to invest and how much sun your flat gets, but in most cases you should be able to generate enough solar energy to at least keep your phone charged.

Flush the toilet with graywater. This one does take some extra effort and requires that your landlord not get too bent out of shape about you removing things that you’ll put back before you leave. Remove the p-trap from your bathroom sink and put a bucket underneath so the sink drain leads to the bucket. When you need to flush the toilet, empty the bucket of sink water into the toilet tank (or directly into the toilet bowl if you have an American-style greedy cup siphon toilet - more instructions here).

Meet your neighbors. Community and mutual aid all start from a base of knowing the people around you. My favorite method is to give a plate of homemade cookies when I introduce myself, but that’s optional.

Share with your neighbors. Set up a shared pantry in your building, try one of these other similar options, and find stuff you need and get rid of stuff you don’t through your local Freecycle, Trash Nothing, or Buy Nothing group.

Class Feature Friday: Armor Innovation (Pathfinder 2nd Edition Inventor Innovation)

Ah, the new inventor class from Guns and Gears, essentially taking all the engineering flavor that 1st edition’s version of the alchemist had in some of its archetypes and putting it in its own, separate class.

My bitterness about the alchemist aside, the inventor does show a lot of unique flavor and fun mechanics, so I can’t be that mad. In fact, I have plans to do a backwards conversion of it.

In any case, inventors do their best to create all manner of useful devices, but they do typically have a magnum opus that they work on, something they are constantly working at to try new things or improve the final design.

So far, these innovations only have three options, but I expect there will be more in the future. For now, let’s look at the first, the innovation of armor.

Whether they wish to create their very own anachronistic clockwork power armor that provides protection and enhancements in battle, or a lighter suit designed for agility and stealth, treated with special chemicals to improve flexibility and dampen sound, (not to mention packing fun gadgets), the armor innovation is for those innovators that wish to improve that which people wear in dangerous situations. Their creations may or may not see final production, but at the very least, they will provide ample protection to the creator.

 Starting off, the inventor can choose between a power suit or a subterfuge suit, the first being tough but heavy, the other being light but thin.

From there, the inventor begins to add modifications of three levels, initial, breakthrough, and revolutionary. Normally you get one of each, but there is a feat that grants an additional innovation.

The initial innovations for armor include: resistance to force and sonic damage; resistance to acid and electricity; supports and pneumatics for the power suit to improve physical aptitude; rune to protect against negative, positive, or alignment damage; resistance to cold and fire; actuators to increase speed; or stealth modifications for the subterfuge suit to make it easier to hide and move silently.

Once the inventor begins to make breakthroughs, they can add the following: antimagical plating to resist spells; shifting pigmentation for the subterfuge suit to blend in anywhere; dense plating, layered mesh, or tensile absorbing plates to resist slashing, piercing, or bludgeoning, respectively; enhance the elemental resistances of the initial modification; increasing the mass and protection of the power suit; or improve the speed boost to the armor further.

Finally, the revolutionary modification may include the following: projecting a field that inhibits the movement of foes; project a barrier that blocks all types of incoming energies; improve the effectiveness of a physical resistance; innovations to the subterfuge suit to mask it from all senses until you attack; improve the durability of the power suit to negate critically deadly blows; improve all physical resistances more broadly; or even incorporating more magical runes.

Of course, there are also feats that can improve the armor further, or at least give you more tricks to use. Collapse Armor let’s them convert their armor to a compact form that can deploy quickly to be removed or worn swiftly. Diving Armor adds swimming and amphibious air extraction capabilities to the armor for underwater action. Megaton Strike and Gigaton Strike lets them empower a punch or specially prepared weapon while using the armor. Clockwork Celerity lets them get a little extra speed with any form of movement the armor has. Electrify Armor adds a punishing electrical charge to fry any that foolishly attack you. Soaring Armor grants your armor the power of flight. Negate Damage gives the armor shifting defenses to block crippling damage. And finally, Full Automation lets the armor move for them while they focus on other tasks.

Additionally, other feats might be useful for these inventors, such as Built-In Tools, Explosive Leap, Variable Core, Searing Restoration, Megavolt, Visual Fidelity, Manifold Modifications, Deep Freeze, Gigavolt, Unstable Redundancies, and You Failed To Account… For This!

With both heavy and stealthy versions of the innovation (and any others published later, this innovation offers options both for the tanky front-line combatant and the sneaky trickster. For the former I recommend a build focused on being up front and dealing extra damage with offensive boost, megaton strike, and the like with support from gadgets, while the stealthy version should focus on staying out of sight and laying down gadgets to disrupt and harm foes, as well as strike when the time is right.

 There could be many reasons why an inventor wishes to create a powerful new armor. Perhaps they wish to emulate the might of much stronger beings without magic, or prove the practical application of some obscure physical formula that their armor utilizes, or they wish to improve the life span of soldiers and warriors, or perhaps they even use the armor as a mobility aid. Regardless, their innovation may be defensive, but it is no less active or destructive when used to it’s full capabilities.

  Eager to find a new way to defend her warren, the kobold inventor Piki has been experimenting with mechanical armor. Springdragon Mk. 1 through 4 have not panned out, but she is sure the Mk. 5 will show promise, and conveniently a group of surface invaders have shown up to provide a useful field test.

 Sent to a plane of cosmic machinery after falling into the maw of a reality-warping chaos leviathan known as a camarach, Ilsha Starweaver spent many years along, surviving off scraps, but also learning about the mechanisms of the plane. Eventually she crafted herself a suit of cosmic gears, and is ready to travel home, but home will be very different than she remembers, and so shall she be.

 After years of perfecting it, an inventor is ready to create a stable and replicable version of her stealth armor. However, when she begins production, she realizes that there must have been an unknown impurity in the oils she originally used to improve the flexibility of the armor, for the new sets aren’t turning out quite right, so she hires adventurers to find the original source of the oil from all those years ago, find what makes it special, and return with a supply for her.

Two Jewish men were shot in Los Angeles within 24 hours in what police said they are investigating as a hate crime.

A suspect was taken into custody Thursday evening with police saying they believe he is responsible for both shootings, which occurred in West Los Angeles on Wednesday and Thursday morning.

"The facts of the case led to this crime being investigated as a hate crime," the Los Angeles Police Department said in a statement Thursday night. "In an abundance of caution, there will continue to be an increased police presence and patrols around Jewish places of worship and surrounding neighborhoods through the weekend."

According to law enforcement sources, the suspect allegedly has a history of animus toward the Jewish community.

In a statement, the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles said, in part: "We have also learned that the suspect has a history of animus towards the Jewish community and these incidents will be treated as hate crimes. As such, we are encouraged to also have learned that the U.S. Attorney will take the case and file federal charges on civil rights violations."

The first shooting occurred shortly before 10 a.m. local time on Wednesday, when a man in his 40s was shot while getting into his vehicle, police said. The suspect fired at the victim while driving by, striking him, then took off, police said.

The second shooting occurred Thursday around 8:30 a.m. a couple of blocks from the first incident, when a suspect fired upon a victim at an intersection from a vehicle, police said.

The victims are in stable condition, police said.

Both incidents occurred in LA's Pico-Robertson area, which is home to many synagogues and religious centers. The victims were leaving houses of worship, according to Jeffery Abrams, regional director for Anti-Defamation League Los Angeles, which he said was working with the LAPD amid the investigation into the incidents.

Police described the suspected shooter as an Asian man with a mustache and goatee driving a possible white compact vehicle.

A suspect was taken into custody around 5:45 p.m. on Thursday following an "exhaustive search" that led officers to an area in Riverside County, the LAPD said. Federal and regional partners helped locate the suspect, who has not been publicly identified. Evidence, including a rifle and handgun, were allegedly recovered, police said.

The LAPD said it is reallocating resources "to provide a highly visible and preventative presence in the area."

"The Los Angeles Police Department is aware of the concern these crimes have raised in the surrounding community," the LAPD said in a statement Thursday evening. "We have been in close contact with religious leaders as well as individual and organizational community stakeholders."

The FBI is assisting the LAPD in the case to determine if it was a hate crime.

LA Mayor Karen Bass said her office was monitoring the incidents.

"These attacks against members of our Jewish community in the Pico-Robertson neighborhood are absolutely unacceptable," she said in a statement. "It is my understanding that both the Los Angeles Police Department and the FBI are investigating these incidents as hate crimes so I want to be very clear: anti-Semitism and hate crimes have no place in our city or our country. Those who engage in either will be caught and held fully accountable."

LA City Councilwoman Katy Yaroslavsky, who represents the district where both shootings occurred, said that the LAPD will provide "heightened deployment around all Jewish institutions citywide" in the wake of the attacks.

"These two shootings are deeply concerning," Yaroslavsky said on Twitter. "We have seen a rise in antisemitic attacks in recent months, and while there remain questions on the motivation of these particular shootings, we cannot ignore the pain and trauma that they have triggered in the community."

Lili Bosse, the mayor of nearby Beverly Hills, also confirmed that police were "placing extra security around our houses of worship in our city."

The victims were Orthodox Jews leaving their synagogues following morning prayers, according to Agudath Israel of America, an organization representing Haredi Orthodox Jews, which called for the shootings to be investigated as hate crimes "until we know otherwise."

In a statement prior earlier Thursday, the organization urged Los Angeles institutions "to be especially vigilant in the days ahead."

Chapter 4: The Moon.

          Today was Saturday, which meant maintenance day at the cabin, the noise of the four boys handling their usual tasks disrupted the almost perfect silence of the forest. Sunghoon was sieving the soil at the spot he frequented for his readings, taking out little rocks, sticks and leaves. Jake was organizing his crystals, it wasn’t necessarily a Saturday task for him though, since he was a little paranoid about losing any of his precious colored rocks, but you can’t blame him, there were plenty of reasons for Jake to gatekeep his crystals; he was also in charge of checking if the protection spells that surrounded the cabin and it’s near trees were still there, since not too long ago some black cat appeared at the forest and stole one of Jungwon’s granda’s talismans. Sunoo was cleaning and rearranging all the furniture while reciting some life path number’s meanings, as he had explained to the rest of the boys plenty of times, if the cabin looked the exact same for too long he might go insane, so he was now focusing on the smallest details to change the general landscape of the compact place. “Oh fuck off. You guys need to snap out of it, this isn’t you.” You tried to squirm out of Ranboo and Purpled’s grip, but with the added strength from the Puppet Master, you weren’t going anywhere.

“You two, search them for the case.” Tommy and Tubbo both started checking your waist bags, searching for your compact and the case holding the charms that would make more magical people like you. Tubbo found your compact and Tommy found the case, tossing them to the man controlling them.

Once he had them in his grasp he let go of his control on the fours boys, laughing as they blink back into consciousness.

“Now that I’ve got what I wanted, I’ll let you sit there and watch as I become the most powerful being ever.” What he hadn’t expected upon opening the case however was for the four charms to float up and away from him.

You had already claimed the pink charm, but the purple one had floated to Purpled. The red one floating to Tommy, and green one to Tubbo, and the Yellow one to Ranboo. Just like yours had taken the shape of a makeup compact, theirs had shifted into items as well.

Tommy was given a mini mp3 player, Tubbo received a pen, Purpled was given a kaleidoscope and Ranboo was given a coin.

“What the hell do we do with these?”

“Use them!” You lunged at the Puppet Master, aiming for your compact. You would need to stall while the boys transformed. Your makeup compact would allow you to use your special ability, the power to clone yourself.

Your sudden attack had surprised the villain, making acquiring your charm easier. Activating your cloning ability, you distracted the villain.

“What do we do now?”

“Your item has a special ability, use it!” Tommy was the first to figure his out, his mp3 player letting out powerful sound waves. The force had knocked down the Puppet Master, it could’ve been stronger if he had more practice using it. Purpled was next, using his kaleidoscope to create a dome around you, it was a protective space that would keep damage from happening outside of it. Next was Tubbo who had used his pen like a detonator, allowing small firecrackers to appear around the villain. Ranboo had figured his out last, flipping the coin and landing it on heads would allow him to grow taller whereas landing it on tails allowed him to teleport. He got tails and appeared near the villain.

“Ranboo!” You tossed the tall boy a pair of cuffs, they were magic restraining cuffs that would prevent him from using his ability. Snapping them on to him, you grabbed the villain yourself.

“I hope you rot in jail.”

It wasn’t until all of you had returned to your normal forms that you all had gotten a chance to talk.

“So uh, what was that?”

“Well it’s typically called magic but feel free to call it whatever.”

“Do we get to keep these?”

“Yes but you can’t use them unless needed and you’ll have to go through training on other types of combat. Now that we’ve figured out that you four were the missing ones, we can finally have a full team.”

“There’s more of you guys?”

“Yeah.”

“So how come you had those charm thingies?”

“I’m the leader of the group, but even still I wouldn’t have been able to take that guy down without your help. You guys are naturals.”

“Yeah, it was pretty fun too.”

“Wow, I guess friendship really is powerful.”

“Friendship is also apparently frilly and sparkly too.”

Toy story au

Dream has a job of restoring old toys, fixing toys- and basically just helping toys to not be broken and stuff (kind of-)

Except he knows something- he knows that toys are alive. He found out when he was a kid and one little mushroom fairy doll he'd stolen had been too lazy to pretend to be an object

So now, Dream has his little workshop where he'll help fix people's toys- but with the help of George (the mushroom fairy doll) he'll find out how the toy got broken and if they want to go back to the person who had then before, if not he'll let them stay and tell the person he couldn't fix the toy, then it's up to the toy weather they want to be given to another kid or if they just wanna stay with Dream (these options are also given to toys who need to be restored- in case they don't wanna be on a shelf collecting dust, or they just are too lonely being on a shelf as a collectable)

So far Dream does have a few toys living with him such as:

George: a doll of a mushroom fairy prince based off a character in an old children's cartoon (Dream had stolen them when he was a kid because he needed money and knew George would sell alot to collectors- but then he found out toys were alive and didn't do that)

Sapnap: action figure of an anime character. He was given to Dream to restore after a collector bought him from another collector- but decided to stay because sitting on a shelf and doing nothing was boring and lonely, so now with Dream he can run around and do whatever he wants, which includes fighting things

Badboyhalo: action figure of a movie villain. The kid who had him before had ripped all of his arms off (even though he's plastic-) while playing with him and that's why Dream had to fix him. Bad decided to stay because he didn't like having to be the villain, plus it hurt to be thrown around and pulled apart so much....

Antfrost: a cat plushie that had a few tears. He'd been sold at a yard sale- but the people who had bought him had only bought Ant and not Velvet, so when he was given to Dream to sew up he asked to stay to have Dream's help to try and find Velvet again so they could stay together (they do find Velvet eventually, don't worry- it seems like the person writing this world decided that Velvet would be given to Dream to get fixed at some point 👀)

AwSamDude: creeper plushie. A kid had tried to sew armor onto him, but they had no idea what they were doing- so now Sam is with Dream being fixed... But he doesn't really want to go back to his kid because he's interested in building and stuff, so he stays and sometimes him and other toys build amazing things with legos-

Red Velvet: little plushie doll designed like a red velvet cake. He ends up with Dream after a kid ripped his arm- but ended up staying because of Antfrost

Captain Puffy: sheep plushie. She was actually given to Dream when he was a baby, like a present for the day he was born- so she's always been there for Dream, even before he knew toys were alive. Now she's in charge of all of the toys when Dream isn't there, she's an amazing leader, builder, and is great at making sure everyone is doing okay

Niki: she's a monster mermaid doll based off a kids movie series with monsters (definitely not monster high-). A kid cut off some of her hair and tried to put makeup on her. She decided to stay because she didn't really like kids deciding who she was and what she was like (she learned from Puffy she could choose what to be like herself) and decided to stay

Ponk: lemon with a face, arms, and legs. A kid ripped off his arm, and when he was brought to Dream the arm that had been torn off was missing. He decided to stay because he wanted to be able to go on his own adventures

Connor: sonic toy. Nobody knows how he got here or why he stayed.

Foolish: action figure! He's supposed to change colour in water, but was never able to do it, and was brought to Dream to be fixed.... But Dream couldn't figure out how to fix it. So Foolish just stayed, and started to become friends with Puffy

Hannah Rose: chia pet doll- the company just wanted to test and see if a doll would work, the kid who had Hannah broke her almost immediately because she's made of glass- she decided to stay because she knew that if she broke again the CIA per company would just destroy her

Punz and Purpled: superhero action figures. Dream got both of them together after a kid tried to swap their arms. Both decided to stay because kids are destructive and disgusting

Quackity: a rubber ducky! His squeaker broke, and he chose to stay because he wants to still annoy people and cause chaos without a squeaker

Karl: a large plushie doll, designed like his original Minecraft skin. His arm got ripped, and he wanted to stay with Dream because he needed help with some memory problems

Eret: doll king based off a show with fairytale characters. The factory paint on his eyes got whiped off, but when Dream was gonna paint it back Eret told him he'd done it herself, she wanted to have blank eyes and wanted to customize themselves to match what he wanted to look like. So Dream helped them out

Technoblade: pig plushie. The dude got a battle scar (he had a year in his arm) and still refuses to let Dream sew it to this day

Ranboo: same line of monster dolls as Niki (he looks like his vtuber). He hasn't been around long enough to have many memories of his own apart from being bought and loosing his hand... So he wants to stay with Dream so he can make his own memories with friends of his own choosing

Wilbur Soot: an amibo of a character from a game like Stardew Valley..... Except he decided to cause chaos, got off his little pedastool and started threatening to burn down the house of the kids that owned him (with Tommy as his "helper"). Dream heard about this and offered the to take Wilbur and Tommy from the family so they're house would be safe-

Tommy: he's like those really small Polly pocket dolls that come in little compacts- but his is a little petting zoo with tiny animals, and a spider he adopted.

Then there are two more humans for this au:

For the toys that still wanna be owned but don't want to go back to the person who had them originally- Dream sends them off to a friend of his that owns a pawn shop: Schlatt, and Schlatt doesn't work alone, he has his son Tubbo work around the pawn shop and help Dream out as well. Tubbo doesn't mind though since he's become friends with some of the toys.

The former MIT researcher accused of murdering a Yale graduate student and subsequently leading authorities on a months-long manhunt until his ultimate capture in Alabama was deemed competent to stand trial despite his attorneys claiming he was refusing to talk to them about his own defense. 

Qinxuan Pan, once a Massachusetts Institute of Technology computer science and artificial intelligence researcher originally from China, is charged with murder in connection to the fatal shooting of 26-year-old Yale University graduate student Kevin Jiang on Feb. 6, 2021, in New Haven, Connecticut. 

More than 21 months after the shooting, which happened in the street outside of Jiang’s fiancée, Zion Perry’s apartment, Pan has been deemed competent to stand trial, The New Haven Register reported. 

Following a brief competency hearing in state Superior Court in New Haven on Monday morning, Pan's lawyer, Norm Pattis, said that "it was an unambiguous finding," so "we will go forward with litigating this case." 

Pan has still not entered a plea in the case.

During what was originally supposed to be Pan’s probable cause hearing in September, Pattis instead made a motion for a competency exam, telling the judge that he was unsure if his client was refusing to talk to him or was just unable to communicate certain aspects of the case. Pan is a U.S. citizen who was born in Shanghai. 

After Monday’s hearing, a new probable cause hearing date has been set for Dec. 5. 

Jiang, who served in the U.S. Army and National Guard, was born in Seattle and grew up in Chicago. He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Washington and before eventually coming to Yale to pursue a graduate degree in environmental studies. He was described by friends and family as a devout Christian and proposed to Perry, a fellow graduate student at Yale, just a week before he was murdered. 

Perry previously attended undergrad at MIT and was photographed talking at a college dance with Pan in 2020. The two were reportedly friends on Facebook, where Perry had posted about her engagement to Jiang. 

The day of the murder, Pan allegedly stole a compact SUV from a Massachusetts car dealership by taking it for a test drive and changed his cell phone number before crossing state lines to Connecticut. 

The vehicle later needed to be towed from railroad tracks in North Haven, Connecticut, not long after Jiang had been fatally shot in nearby New Haven. Police briefly questioned Jiang at a motel in the area but let him go because they initially had a different description of the suspect, according to court documents. 

Initially named a person of interest in Jiang’s killing, Pan was formally charged with murder on Feb. 26, 2021, through a warrant issued by the New Haven State’s Attorney's Office. 

But months passed with him in the wind despite nationwide and international search efforts. The U.S. Marshals Service said Pan had been spotted in the early morning hours on Feb. 11, 2021, driving with family members in Brookhaven or Duluth, Georgia. The search later expanded globally and an Interpol Red Notice was issued. 

That was until May 2022 when Pan was eventually nabbed in Birmingham, Alabama, at an apartment rented under a fake name with $19,000 cash, seven cell phones, seven SIM cards and his father’s passport. 

By the September hearing, the defense had already been granted several delays in the case to allow time to review evidence. But even so, Pattis told State Superior Court Judge Jon Alander, in requesting the competency exam, that his client had indicated that it’s possible there was ​"a second person was involved." Pattis suggested Pan could have been at the scene where Jiang was shot but did not pull the trigger or may not have been there at all.

Write Tight

What is poetry? Etymology provides more questions than answers.

T. S. Eliot, who once famously called National Poetry Month the cruelest, was also one of many to point out the hopeless semantic tangles that ensue because “poetry” has two opposites. Poetry can be the lined stuff, often with rhymes, as opposed to sentences and paragraphs; poetry can also be the good stuff, as opposed to the plodding or simply informational. But if good prose can be poetic, a novel can be “pure poetry,” and poems can be prosaic, then it’s not clear what anyone is talking about, really. Or rather, it’s clear except to theorists trying to come up with definitions. Poetry is what’s thrilling, while a poem is that poor thing with eleven readers, eight of them members of the poet’s extended family.

Etymology doesn’t help—it only highlights that the apples and oranges here are how the thing is made and how it moves. Poetry is from the Greek poiein, “to make”: a poem is something made, or in English we would more naturally say crafted. Yet everyone agrees good prose is well crafted, too. Prose means, literally, “straightforward,” from the Latin prosa, proversus, “turned to face forward” (whereas verse is all wound up, twisty and snaky, “turned” in every direction except, apparently, forward). Yet we all know that poems can be clear and direct, too, especially when they’re songs.

Sidelining sonnets and quarantining quatrains in the poetry ghetto does produce a certain clarity. But of course it also creates problems when translating from languages that gerrymander poetry differently. In German, for example, writer is a word even more literal than the English “someone who writes”: it’s Schriftsteller, a put-down-on-paper-er (Schrift = “writing,” stellen = “to place, to put”). Autor is a word used a bit less often for pretty much the same thing, unlike in English, where there’s a difference: author expresses a professional and financial identity (there are no “unpublished authors,” unless maybe the manuscript is finished and the contract is signed), while a writer is someone pursuing an activity (published or not, paid or not, read or not).

And then there’s a Dichter, usually translated “poet” but meaning a creator of poetry in the grand sense. The verb dichten means “to write poetry, ” and a poem is a dichten-ed thing, a Gedicht, but dichten means more generally to write poetically and well. The good stuff. The writer as hero of the spirit. How do you say that in English? We don’t have heroes of the spirit.

At least not according to Grimm’s German Dictionary—the equivalent of the Oxford English Dictionary, and started by those same Brothers Grimm who brought us “Little Red Riding Hood.” It gloats that dichten means “to create poetically, filled with a higher intelligence,” and that “the word does not exist in French and English: they work around it with s’adonner à la poésie, faire des vers; to compose a poem, to make verses, to versify.” The OED can fire back all it wants—pleading that dight had “an extraordinary sense-development” in Middle English from its original “senses of literary dictation and composition,” to become “one of the most widely used words in the language”—but its efforts are in vain. From that whole extraordinary range of meanings we use exactly none anymore.

“To understand the word,” Grimm’s poetically goes on, “we must go back to an earlier time …” Dichten originally meant to write something down so it could be read or sung, something that had already been worked out in the mind (from the Latin dictare, “to say, to dictate”). It swerved into meaning the mental working-out, too, the originating creative act. A sixteenth-century saying already plays on the same double meaning that causes ambiguity in English: “A good enough rhyme-smith, but hardly a poet” (Reimschmiede genug, aber wenig Dichter). But from there, the word left the confines of verse. In German, you can still call someone a poet in the grand sense without consigning him to the poetry ghetto.

So what is a Dichter in prose? I have caved on occasion and translated Dichter as “poet,” in cases where the character in question may or may not be a poet (e.g., Robert Walser’s story “Letter from a Poet to a Gentleman”), or happens to be a poet even if that’s not really the point. Goethe was a poet, so the title of his autobiography, Dichtung und Wahrheit, can be translated as it usually is, Poetry and Truth, even though the book is not particularly about verse as opposed to other forms. His topic is actually Imagination and Truth, but imagination set down on paper. To put it anachronistically: Creative Writing and the Truth.

Sometimes, though, “poet” risks being downright misleading. A twentieth-century German writer named Uwe Johnson, known as the Dichter der beiden Deutschlands (the Dichter of both East and West Germany), wrote only prose. Call him the “poet of both Germanies” and people will think he’s a poet. He is more like “the voice of divided Germany,” or even “the bard,” despite being neither a songwriter nor Shakespeare. In English, we can get the grandeur (voice) or the job (writer, author, novelist), but not both.

There are cognates of dichten, from the same Latin dictare, but they never took on the same soaring spirit in English, at least since the demise of dight. Very much on the contrary. Our closest cognate, indite, “to put into words, write, compose, give literary form to,” was more or less completely swamped by what was once the same word, indict, “to write up charges, bring legal action against.” (Probably under interference from indicare, “to indicate, give evidence against”; and indicere, “to declare publicly,” compare Italian indicere, “to denounce.”) To translate Dichter as “inditer” won’t do. Even our least sarcastic Dichter is sarcastic about that: “Perhaps my best moments I never jot down; when they come I cannot afford to break the charm by inditing memoranda”—Walt Whitman.

Coincidentally, dicht in German also means “tight,” as in watertight or airtight (from Old Norse þéttr, apparently completely unrelated etymologically to dictare), and the verb dichten is also “to seal, caulk, make impermeable,” as well as “to make more dense or compact.” Ezra Pound played on the pun in his second most well-known slogan for what poetry does (after “Make it new”): dichten = condensare. An imagist manifesto in twenty characters: to write poetry is to condense and supercharge language. (Pound attributed the equation to the poet Basil Bunting “fumbling about with a German–Italian dictionary”; actually, Bunting knew what he was doing, and wasn’t exactly fumbling. Pound = condescendere.)

This may not be a less ambiguous definition of poetry, but it is a good challenge for the Dichters in our midst, in poetry or prose. Don’t just make it new: make it tight.
