Multiple people in the last two days have proposed Goblin Emperor/Murderbot crossover fic, which is a fascinating conclusion to jump to, but I would like to propose the setup to this fic:

Murderbot is contracted to a service that results in its killing a couple of humans. Its contract ends, and it is immediately contracted to guard investigator Thara Celehar and ensure that the murderer does not harm him while he investigates.

Celehar is absolutely working himself into the ground. Murderbot is 100% calling this one in. Following Celehar around providing no assistance whatsoever.

Celehar: The corpses said they did not see their attacker, but there was evidence the attacker was very fast Murderbot: Curious.

Eventually Celehar works round to uncovering the truth, which Murderbot does nothing to hide from him, because it is a tool and ultimately the people to blame are the ones who contracted it so what does it care.

Celehar: Why didn't you SAY you did it at ANY POINT in the last TWO WEEKS? Murderbot: You didn't ask. Also it gave me time to catch up on my media.

It was hired to make sure the murderer does not try to harm the investigator, and it is achieving that mission.

that post about which was the first thing you read fanfic got me thinking about like. fan and fandom behaviors. how like. aged 10 or 11 and just through sheer power of will and armed with a crappy little camera and the pre-installed video editing software on my dad's laptop I would create """"edits"""" of my then current fandom obsession 😭😭😭 not even for anyone else, literally just because it was such a joyous little activity 😭😭😭 like I'd draw the blinds, so there were no reflections, then neatly filmed the laptop screen only so I could then clip the videos down and rearrange the scenes and put my favorite songs underneath 😭😭😭 I didn't even show it to anyone!!! I was just like!!! look!!! my thing!!! 😭😭😭 this was before I even had an email address fdkghkdf let alone any accounts anywhere, I was just yearning for the fandom experience dhgakldfhgkdf and isn't that so fun in a way? that you love something so much you just. invent your way around engaging with it so intensely??? idk man, I'm having a very grateful that fandoms exist and grateful that I've had the chance to spend so much time in spaces with people who have shared the passions I've had time

i wasn’t around for whatever happened there, so i don’t know the context. i’m just confused about what exactly you meant by that?

like, yeah, they’re darkners. they’re a mono speaker, cassette deck, and cd player. but what did you mean by “they’re not robots”? did you mean that they’re not robots in the light world, or that their bodies in the dark world aren’t robotic? the first one makes sense to me, but i don’t like the implications of the second one. like, if their bodies aren’t robotic, what are they. are they made of meat. i don’t think i want to imagine Meat Cd Player

They Probably Age. like they are just Objects Given Form By The Fountain. lancer isn’t anything more than a darkner of a card, and in that same way scc are just darkners of a speaker, cassette player and cd player, and that’s all ! to them they are just like any other darkner ! to them they are people !

one thing i like about how they did ai brainiac here is that most people would be aware that sentient beings don't want to be conquered like he wants to do to earth or brainwashed like he's been doing to kara. but brainiac isn't people. he's a machine, he is programming, there is sentience but he is not actually a person. and he clearly doesn't understand when things go against his plans, when he can't program the real world into doing what he wants. it's why he's legitimately angry that earth is trying to resist his invasion, why he's legitimately upset and disappointed that kara would rebel against him and try to be her own person. because personhood is not something that computes with him, on a fundamental level, he doesn't understand it or free will or the concept of independent choice. it's an interesting view at how "sentient ai" might actually work and also react to the things around it.
