After almost six months of work, I'm proud to finally present my integrated commuter rail map of New York City and Philadelphia!
Showing five different commuter rail systems (CT Rail, Metro-North, LIRR, NJ Transit, and SEPTA), this map depicts everywhere a passenger can get to by train from NYC or Philadelphia without using Amtrak.
This is by far the most complicated map I've ever made, but I'm incredibly happy with the result! I'm planning to write some notes on the process of making this, but for now, I'm just proud that it's finally done.

#i believe in new england and wisconsin and the pacific north/southwest in general. everything else is on thin ice#i could literally NEVER point to these on a map even if you paid me (except connecticut. but it's not real so)#wyoming and oklahoma and iowa are the most fake#west virginia almost made the list but then i remembered the silence of the lambs

Kensett: A Free 19th Century Urban Cartography Brush Set for Fantasy Maps
There’s a style of cartography that is hard for the modern viewer to wrap their head around. Most of the time, we expect a broad macro perspective. Seeing the world from a single angle. But it was not uncommon for cartographers to map locations based on perspective. Such is the case with today’s subject. Instead of showing a town from above, we get renders that show how the village would look…

THE POOTICUCK ATLAS PART V
More verbiage from Canterville, but this time, we’re focusing on Pooticuck County, Canterville’s main ally in the Flatlands, as well as all the towns and villages which make up that micro-nation. Hoo boy! These are lengthy, but that could be this is the first time I coalesced my thoughts about them. This will be the fifth entry….
SARUMVILLE – In 1670, the first of the infamous Simcooth clan arrived in the Fort Kathlyn settlement. The term “deer tick” did not come into usage until 1982, but back then the Wampaug had the perfect word in their language to describe Yancy Simcoethe – “Apiq”, which translates to “flea”. (Upon later meeting his father, the Reverend Salisbury Simcoethe, the tribe gave that name to the minister and instead called Yancy “Ohq” which means “Maggot”, the spawn of the Flea. The Simcoethes were of Dutch origin, which eased their acceptance into the settlement as Dutch sailors, already living among the Scottish refugees, had been instrumental in rescuing the Fògarraich. The Scottish descendants would soon regret welcoming them into their midst, and their Dutch counterparts were embarrassed for having championed their inclusion.
The Simcooths (having altered their name soon after arrival) were the classic caricature of a carpetbagger – burrowing into a society and attempting to take as much of it for their own… just like a flea. Reverend Salisbury Simcooth was greedy for more than the wealth, however. In his vision for the Connecticut Colony, he wanted to make it a reflection of England… especially in all of the location names. (One of his greatest successes was working behind the scenes to convince the people of Naumeag to change their name to New London in 1650.) His dream was to have a town named after himself more than the English location which had been his name’s origin. Eventually that would happen, but over sixty years after his death… which coincided with the Great Vanishment of the northern half of Fort Kathlyn.
As Pooticuck County grew from its humble beginnings of the towns of Notchboro, Wampaug, and Hobbimock, the Simcooths and their ilk tried to gain even more influence within each new community stitched into its landscape by the Toddler God. Finally, there was an uprising against the clan, with the intention of forcing them to find shelter in some other Flatlands country. By then, however, their reputation had preceded them and the only nations willing to take them were Nisssiruu, Dragefjell, and the Albiyun Empire. The Albiyun offer was tempting as thousands of years before [ER] they did share a common ancestry; but as for the offers from the other two countries, the Simcooths knew the Reptoids of that land saw them as a food source. (The dragons of Dragefjell were far too cultured to be munching on humans with such corrupted souls (which they claim they can taste.) But they liked to maintain that rumor to keep the hairless apes in line.
It’s hard to think of “Divine Providence” in correlation with Astiph the Crippled Artisan of the Universe, but as the Simcooths were about to be expelled, a new expanse of territory was stitched into the landscape. Seen as an offering to keep Astiph’s collection of “action figures” complete, the Thane of Pooticuck County allowed the Simcooths to stay, especially since it was as far from the rest of the micro-nation as possible. (They are hemmed in by the equally detestable mega-rich in the Prescott Estates and by the cowboys of Three-Bar Ranch which won’t let them ever get away with their schemes.
The Thane at the time further dunned them, remembering the avaricious desires of Reverend Simcooth, that they could never name their town “Salisbury”. But slippery as ever, the Simcooth Conglom named it “Sarumville”, which in a way was an archaic rendition of “Salisbury”.
PRESCOTT ESTATES – As mentioned above, Prescott Estates is a haven for the wealthy, although they would probably see it as a hell. It wasn’t dumped into the Connecticut-influenced country as a whole, but individually as private holdings, estates which constantly expand the town’s boundaries. And unlike everywhere else in the Flatlands, they are remembered back on Earth, for their original mansions were left behind as abandoned, crumbling facades.
They have no staff; they must do everything for themselves. And save for public transport, which only takes them to Winthrop, Pooticuck Center, and as with all Mankind, to Barrow, vehicles running on faesmic energy do not work within its borders.
COLLINSTED – By the late 1800s [ER], Pooticuck County began their own version of “Whiskaways,” thanks to their mastery of the vortals. But unlike the semi-god Astiph, their “immigrants” were recruited rather than abducted. Their candidates could either remain on Earth and continue leading their mundane lives, or they (and their families) could be transported to the magical Flatlands, where their talents could best serve the needs of Pooticuck County… but only with the fore-knowledge that they could never return to Earth. From the perspective of so many, the Unknown was always preferable to what they currently had on Earth.
One of the ethnic groups whom Pooticuck County displayed an interest were the stonecutters from the mountainous region of Northern Italy, especially around the Dolemites. While many accepted the offer – and their work is still evident in the municipal architecture of the various towns – an unforeseen consequence of the offer for those stonecutters to bring along their families was that not all of them were cut out to be cutters. As many of them arrived in Connecticut, some (like my own ancestors on the Fontanella side) went to the area of Stafford Springs to begin their lives of quiet mundanity, others accepted the offer of adventure and were escorted through the Caul into Canterville and from there on to the Flatlands.
The community chosen for them was along the Amphisbane River, and it was primarily chosen because of the cluster of mountains not that far from the river’s edge. That would serve as the main source of their quarries. In anticipation of their arrival, the “Elders” of Pooticuck County had christened the region as Colanieri, after the main family of stone cutters. But they demurred, mainly because many in their family – back on Earth as well as among the new arrivals – were not stonecutters, but rather practitioners of a more disreputable line of endeavors. In other words, “Black Hand” was often mentioned in connection to those Colanieris. It didn’t take long for those black sheeps in the Famiglia to suss out the rest of the Flatlands and find out where their so-called talents would be most profitable. (And they now hold one of the provinces of the Vitullis Confederacy as their own domain.)
Instead, the Colanieris chose to anglicize* their name for the town, which is known to this day as “Collinsted” and its people as “Stedders”..
With their skills as stone cutters no longer in demand, the people of Collinsted became more invested in the politics of Pooticuck County, at all levels. And the most common campaign slogan is: “VOTE FOR A STEDDER INSTEAD!”
NEW MIDWICH – There’s really nothing to say about New Midwich. It’s like Joe Walsh would sing, it’s a town full of ordinary, average guys. Which come to think of it, makes it extraordinary in comparison with so many other communities in Pooticuck County. That could be why it remains the most popular location for resettlement after new arrivals have completed acclimation in Abbistock.
* O’Bservation – “Anglicized” isn’t quite the right term, as the differences between English and Wuntung, the common language of the Flatlands, is ever-widening. But there is no comparable term to use and “wuntunged” just sounds wrong.
