how do you feel about McCoy? ( for linda )
implied mention -> @thefleetsfinest
Head cants ever so slightly to the side, and than a slow pivot to face the owner of the voice. Having spent a majority of her life on Starbase 515 to which she joked that you would know every medical personnel on and off base in thirty years, she knew what a rumor mill could be like and look like. Linda could name all the greats that came through that base and probably knew more than half a couple dozen secrets to never see the light of day.
Her two years spent on a starship prior to the Enterprise had only reinforced the idea that a concentration of people sharing one habitat would naturally evolve into curiosities about their neighbor's business, especially on starship. She taps away at a pad, holding up one hand to signal one moment before she gives the question even any levity of thought.
❝ Chief McCoy is a remarkable doctor to work alongside with and I have a great matter of respect for his dedication to our ship's crew as well as his consideration for his staff. It has been a pleasure and honor. I am lucky. ❞ And that's her professional answer, and further answers that would require her to speak from her heart would not be stated so freely or namely while her hair is tight in a bun, concentration on her work, in the middle of the medical bay.
In the nebulous part of her mind, she's aware of Leonard in concentration in his office with the door left open to keep himself involved with the greater space of their workplace. She liked that about him. There's a lot that she liked about him, that would leave her with a delightful ache in her chest and all the softer, finer details that only her pillows would know her smiling into them about.
Green eyes only spare a cursory look in his office's general direction, before she's redirecting focus to the pad and crewman in front of her. A courteous smile starts to grace her lips, ❝ Now is there anything I can assist you with, any medical concerns you may be having? If privacy is needed, that can be created before announcing your concerns or questions. I can defer you to another of our staff if that is preferred as well. ❞
Linda looks them in the eye, smile a little more tight and tone touch more advisory warning. ❝ If you are simply loitering, than I will tell you to leave and take it to the mess hall. . . . or somewhere people aren't working. ❞ The snide side of her almost wants to mention the Bridge if only because of the rumors and gossip surrounding the ship's senior officers.

Outdated grooming policies banning natural Black hairstyles have fueled racial inequities in schools and workplaces for too long. However, a new wave of legislative reforms and public advocacy aims to finally dismantle this form of discrimination. The CROWN Act (Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair) has emerged as a legislative solution, prohibiting race-based hair discrimination. To date, the CROWN Act has been enacted in 24 states and numerous municipalities but has stalled in the U.S. Senate after passing through the House. Additionally, some state-level versions of the CROWN Act still enable discriminatory targeting of Black hairstyles.
In Texas, the CROWN Act left loopholes allowing bans on hair longer than two inches, which explicitly singles out and prohibits natural Black hairstyles like afros and dreadlocks on male students. By failing to bar restrictive policies on length and color, Texas’ version of the CROWN Act falls short of fully preventing race-based hair discrimination. Such gaps at the state level undermine the spirit of the CROWN Act and must be addressed through truly comprehensive reforms that protect all facets of Black hair. This gap between legislative success and real-world implementation, as evidenced by the suspension of a Texas student months after the Act’s passage, highlights the need for comprehensive legislation to fully address hair discrimination. Moving forward, legislation must address hair length, color, texture, and style to create truly inclusive policies without loopholes that permit discrimination.
Hair policies that regulate length and color have specifically targeted Black students, leading to disproportionate discipline and loss of educational opportunities. National data reveal that while Black students represent 15% of the K–12 population, they account for 31% of all school suspensions. Black students nationwide are missing nearly three times as many school days due to suspension as white students, accounting for a disproportionate number of the total 11 million days of lost instruction. In one school district in Texas, research from the Center for Justice Research at Texas Southern University found that Black students are seven times more likely to be suspended compared to white students, often for discretionary, minor behavioral infractions. Repeated suspensions increase the risk of falling behind, dropping out, and having contact with the juvenile justice system. In fact, one study revealed a concerning cycle—students who were suspended from school were seven percent more likely to later have contact with the juvenile justice system. Moreover, once these students returned to their schools after suspension, they were 20% more likely than their peers to face another suspension.
The consequences of hair discrimination extend beyond the classroom. A 2021 study found that Black women with natural hairstyles are less likely to be recommended for a job interview compared to white women with curly or straightened hair. Natural hairstyles like dreadlocks were deemed less professional. This employment discrimination limits economic mobility and forces Black women to incur the financial and health burdens of damaging chemical treatments, including increased uterine cancer risk from chemical straighteners.
To achieve the goal of ending hair discrimination, the CROWN Act must expand to cover all facets of hair style and presentation without exceptions, such as those found in the Texas version. Congress should pass the federal CROWN Act, joining states like Colorado and New Jersey in enacting more comprehensive bills that close loopholes. Enforcement will also require dedicated resources and training. School administrators must learn how to shift away from punitive dress codes toward supportive, culturally-informed policies. Human resource professionals need guidance on removing Eurocentric appearance standards from hiring and grooming practices.
The CROWN Act reflects an important step towards ending race-based hair discrimination. However, true progress requires closing loopholes that allow for continued disproportionate enforcement against Black students and workers. Comprehensive legislation coupled with proper training and enforcement provides a path forward to ending harmful policies rooted in white supremacist standards. Schools and workplaces must move beyond narrow beauty norms towards valuing diversity in how individuals present themselves. This includes embracing and protecting all hair lengths, textures, and colors.
Why it matters
Hair discrimination limits educational attainment, career opportunities, and economic mobility for Black Americans. It also exacts a psychological and physical health toll by forcing assimilation to white beauty standards. The CROWN Act has the potential to eliminate centuries-old institutional policies and stereotypes that perpetuate racial inequities and trauma.
However, achieving this goal depends on enacting legislation that fully encompasses all facets of hair, including length, texture, color, and style. Comprehensive legal protections coupled with training and enforcement can help create more inclusive environments, where individuals are empowered to show up authentically. Getting the CROWN Act right matters for racial justice and equality of opportunity.

Texas Superintendent Greg Poole Praises ‘Conformity’ In Defense Of Suspending Darryl George
“Being an American requires conformity with the positive benefit of unity,” wrote Greg Poole, the superintendent, in a Jan. 14 full-page advertisement in the Houston Chronicle, referencing dress codes at military academies as an example he said demonstrated the importance of rigorous standards. The ad ran after the Chronicle published an editorial criticizing the district’s actions.
George’s family sued the state’s governor and attorney general in September, alleging that the state failed to enforce a new law that prohibits hair discrimination when the high school junior was suspended because the district said his hair was too long. George has been repeatedly suspended and disciplined since.
“The men in our family show they locks as a sign of connection with our roots and ancestors, which keeps us connected and closer to the Higher power God,” wrote Darresha George, Darryl’s mother, in an exemption form filed Tuesday viewed by The Washington Post.
Texas is one of at least 24 states that have passed a version of the Create a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair Act, known as the Crown Act, to address discrimination that Black people in particular have faced in the workplace or at school. Across the country, civil rights advocates have said that school hair and dress codes have the potential to discriminate along racial, cultural or religious lines and enforce outdated gender stereotypes.
State Rep. Ron Reynolds (D), who co-wrote the Texas law and has noted that many natural hairstyles need to be a certain length, said the school district is bucking the law meant to protect students like George. He called on the district to revise its dress code and end the disciplinary actions.
“They are trying to argue that there is a loophole in the law, that it doesn’t cover length, which is nonsense,” said Reynolds, who chairs the Texas Legislative Black Caucus. He added that the full-page advertisement was a “PR attempt to deflect the fact that they’re violating Texas law.” -(source: the washington post)

Hello! I have kinda a longwinded question about fantasy dwarves, ive read your posts about the topic and id like to know if what im considering is distancing the idea of 'dwarves' from the real history of little people. I have a homebrew d&d world where ive created a fair bit of worldbuilding for a number of fantasy races, dwarves included. Everything you were saying about fantasy dwarves makes total sense, and I dont want to perpetuate that, so I'd like to change my homebrew setting to be more respectful of LP and their history. Is changing the name and physical characteristics (i.e. Not having the species called dwarves, not having them be small humanoid mining people, etc) and including fleshed out characters with dwarfism in other races enough to distance this from real little people?
To make up for a potentially heavy question: all the outfits you post are Excellent, what are your favorite clothes to find and alter? Or, is there any piece in your wardrobe you really love/ are proud of? I dont alter too much of my clothing but i always treasure finding a pair of pants i can reasonably take in and make work for me! Thank you for always being so friendly and open in asks, its very much appreciated and I hope you're having a good day!
Hello! Thank you for these questions ^-^ I've noticed that a lot of dnd players and world builders are working to create more accepting settings for their players, which is a great endeavor for the world of fantasy.
Q: Is changing the name and physical characteristics (i.e. not having the species called dwarves, not having them be small humanoid mining people, etc) and including fleshed out characters with dwarfism in other races enough to distance this from real little people?
Solid question - I think that the only real way to distance real little people from fantasy "dwarves" is to drop the made up race all together, which you would already essentially be doing once you stray from the necessary characteristics that draw the parallel. Basing a made up race of beings off of a marginalized community shouldn't be happening - full stop. And it shouldn't be missed. Yes, freely include little people in the fantasy genre, but don't use their bodies to mystify them. Don't turn them into a class other than human.
And removing "dwarves" as a race classification is really just a drop in the bucket. Include real little people in ALL genres outside of fantasy. Create positive representation. Use media as a means of destigmatizing and romanticizing bodies like mine, and step outside of the written word; Fight for equality for real life little people, and by extension the entire disabled community. Take stands against inaccessibility, workplace and medical discrimination, healthcare inequality. Educate yourself on spoon theory, take up sign language, question the nature of the world we've built in the same way you do regarding gender, sexuality, race and mental illness.
Q: All the outfits you post are Excellent, what are your favourite clothes to find and alter? Or, is there any piece in your wardrobe you really love/are proud of?
Thank you so much ^-^ well I'm a really big fan of earth tones and mixed patterns - lots of browns, greens, blacks, and mustards. I love finding things that I don't have to alter, but when I must I like to adjust sleeves - skirts and dresses are a bit more work. Currently my favorite garment is the skirt seen in the top left photo (description: knee length polyester skirt that sits at high waist, black with diagonal matte gold stripes) which I love to pair with both green pallets and red and yellow pallets. Mostly I love to have a lot of witchy fun with my clothes :)

Photo ID: four photos of myself in various outfits over the last couple years. You see my hair go back and forth between green and brown. The first photo is a mirror selfie of me with my rollator, I am wearing a stripped black and gold skirt, and earth toned floral shirt with a black with gold stars scarf as a belt. On my black rollator hangs a totoro plushie and my mossy green jacket. In the second photo I am in a long black skirt and studded black leather belt, a brown sweater vest, and green button up and black beanie. My hair is short, curly, and dark green. The third photo is one a friend took, I am wearing my mossy green jacket that has a frog patch that reads "I may look grumpy but I'm happy to be alive", I am wearing a mustard and green scarf and matching purple pants and sweater. I have on round glasses and a peter pan inspired green beanie with a red feather. In the last photo I have my rollator again and am in front of a mirror, my hair is green and I have on red eye make up. I am wearing a mustard and brown patterned shirt with a green vest with gold floral embroidery. My skirt is brown with red and green roses on it, coming down to my knees. You can see part of my beet tattoo and crow tattoo on my lower right arm that holds my phone.

The CROWN Act
The CROWN Act is a movement to prohibit race-based hair discrimination--the denial of employment and educational opportunities because of hair texture or protective hairstyles including braids, locs, twists or bantu knots. CROWN stands for "Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair." It's already a law in California and Washington State, and it recently passed the Oregon state House unanimously and will soon move to the Senate. It's also passed in New York, New Jersey, Virginia, Colorado, Washington, Maryland and Connecticut. Twenty-one municipalities have also signed it into law, and an additional bill was signed in New Mexico that was inspired by the CROWN Act. You can see the status of the act in your state on this map, which is not image described, or in plain text at Byrdie. If you live in a state that hasn't passed the CROWN Act, you can help! Contact your state legislators and tell them it's important to you that people of color are able to wear and style their natural hair without facing discrimination in the classroom and workplace, and you're writing to ask them to introduce or sponsor the CROWN Act in your state legislature. If you just want to copy and paste, you can borrow my wording or use a letter template (in pdf) from Dove, a member of the CROWN Coalition. If you live in a state that has passed the CROWN Act or you've contacted your state legislators and still have some juice left, contact your US Senators and US Representative and ask them the same thing. The CROWN Act passed the House, September 21, 2020, as H.R. 5309 in the 116th Congress, but never made it to the Senate, so it will need to be reintroduced for this current session of Congress. You can also sign the Crown Act petition to show your support, even if you don't live in the US. They currently have 258,233 of 300,000 signatures. The goal is to make the CROWN Act the law across the country and on a federal level.

hi everyone! in this pick a card i hope to show you the person that you will (romantically) love the most in this life, and answer the question of whether you will be able to be happy with this person forever. this means this person isn’t necessarily your soulmate, they’re just the one person you dream of choosing over anyone else! pick the image that sets your thoughts off and scroll down to your respective pile for your reading~ 💞
PILE ONE: SUNSET
your person has gone through some things in life, and it’s made them smart, strong, tolerant and patient. what more can we ask for, honestly, right? for most of you this person will be a virgo, but for some they’ll be a leo. or maybe a combination of both. the only small issue i see here is that they don’t really pay much attention to their emotions, and by extension, others’ as well. not that they would offend people on purpose, just that they may prioritise a goal over someone’s feelings, for example.
lucky you, it looks like you will be with this person for a very long time! you might have just met, or you’ll be meeting them soon at school or work. at least one of you will still be pretty junior when you meet. the connection will be a little bit magical, a little bit telepathic, like you understand and complement each other down to each of your powers and your nature. like i said, this person doesn’t really think about romantic things, but they will start to do more and more of the things you like— basically, they want to and will treat you right if you give them a little push in the right direction. you will start a family that is very balanced and has a healthy amount of discipline. i’m feeling libra... maybe you’ll have a libra child with this person? or maybe it’ll be libra season when you meet, or become official, or marry... it’ll resonate differently for everyone.
lastly, i want to say that this connection is very much mental > physical. i feel like some of you may be asexual? regardless, it’s unlikely that you will be attracted to each others looks at first, you’ll love each other for the other’s personality.
PILE TWO: COUPLE
what an exciting soulmate this is! firstly, yes, this person is your soulmate above being the person you will love the most. huge libra vibes. some of you will see scorpio or gemini, though. your person is daring, they have no trouble leaving safety if they think the next big thing will be worth it, and they’ll adapt to the next environment to the point where they’re unrecognisable from their previous self. yet, they’re pretty intense, so i can’t call them a chameleon. your person also has a way with words— they could convince someone the sky is green if they tried hard enough. they could work in the legal fraternity.
now, for the question on whether you’ll be happy together forever, i want to say it’s a soft yes right now. this relationship might be a little volatile; perhaps you or they are a rather argumentative person by nature (more them than you, honestly) so “fights” break out often. i also get the feeling you’re not someone who actually goes against the flow very often— you like your stability in the long run, even if this intense person excites you. they may not appreciate the steadiness you offer, and you may find their drastic ways too dramatic for your comfort. lady luck is on your side, so i think you will pull through, and the two of you will also be very genuinely and purely in love with each other. that being said... at the point where you meet and get together, neither of you would have your eyes wide open enough to see what the other is here to teach you. and so the puzzle pieces will fit, but wrongly. and when the two of you get to fitting the last few pieces, you’ll realise your mistake. i don’t see you getting out of having a huge fight when this happens. will you have the patience and tenacity to crumble the picture back to pieces and start again? i hope you will, darling, because i really think it’ll be worth it.
PILE THREE: SNOW GLOBE
wow, we have a very good looking person on our hands! for some of you this person could just be a little younger than you, but for most, i’m feeling pretty immature vibes coming from this person. they want what they want, you know? they’re likely a sagittarius-capricorn cusp, but more likely capricorn over sagittarius. they’re determined, ambitious and cocky, but boy do they have the qualifications to back themselves up. when they approach you, they will already know they have you.
and yet, you will not stay. this person underestimates the choices you have. you are not powerless yourself, and they know, yet they choose to believe you won’t use it. but you will, because no matter how much someone has your heart, your heart is not your everything, and i know you are not the kind of person to drop your professional life over a 5-carat diamond ring. neither are you the kind of person to allow someone to stand you up more than once without so much as a text. and so you will reconsider your choices, and there will be someone else. a water sign. you will always remember the fire you had with the person before, but this other person will wash away the flames and leave behind a calming stream that you will have to admit, is better for you in the long run.
i know you really wanted this person, darling, but they were dimming your light without even knowing it. and they might have been the person for you, but you weren’t the person for them. or maybe there’s no one that will be able to make them understand. whatever the case is, this person is not yours to keep.
PILE FOUR: HANDS
gosh, i can totally see why you’re smitten for this person. they’re so romantic! it’s in the way they push their hair back, in the way they look at you when you’re recalling a story, and in the flowers they have sent to your workplace, and the sound of them singing love songs to you, and their lofty dreams of a beautiful family in the future... it all makes you swoon. and how apt, this person is a pisces or a taurus, both pretty romantic signs! did i mention they’re not too bad looking either? wow. it’s the full package.
...except they’re not the sharpest tool in the shed. they’re not dumb, just not very clear cut or focused. they’re a little easily distracted, and people will want to distract them, for sure. and honestly, buddy, i’m not sure if you want to have to deal with all of that jealousy and people trying to steal your s/o out from underneath you.
which is why i would say soft no to staying together for the long haul. it’s really not just you, like i said, this person’s a little scatter-brained and may not have the one track mind they would need to make anyone feel secure in a relationship with them. there will be quite a few major gaps between you in terms of where you stand in life, love and your careers, and it’s bound to create misplaced feelings of insecurity. it’s truly not that you can’t make it out to the other side, in fact, if you do, it’s a relationship that will really last forever. but it will be hard, and when you’re at that crossroad, you will just have to go with your gut. you’ll know which path you’re meant to take, and even if it’s the one where the two of you don’t work out, you’ll look upon your days with this person fondly.

Diamond Campbell, a powerlifter at Bruce High School in Mississippi, was almost disqualified from the state championship April 1.
But it wasn't because of her form. It was because of her hair.
"I remember looking back, and on the board, it'll be green or red. If it's green, you know, you got it. You can go on and do the next weight," Campbell, 16, said in a recent interview, recalling the moment she stepped off the platform after completing her first lift. "So I looked at the board, and it was red. I was confused."
A judge informed one of her coaches that Campbell would need to remove the beads securing the ends of her braids in order to stay in the competition.
A viral photo of some of Campbell's teammates and competitors frantically helping her remove the beads has been shared on Facebook more than 35,000 times, with many people remarking it was an "amazing" and "awesome" display of good sportsmanship. But Campbell; her mother, Melody; and a host of others said they see something different when they look at the image: the results of hair discrimination.

In interviews with NBC News, the parents of two children singled out over their natural hairstyles or textures said their experiences highlight the necessity of the Crown Act, which would ban hair discrimination in workplaces, schools and other contexts. The name "Crown" stands for Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair.
The bill passed the House in March, with a vote of 235-189 mostly along party lines, but it has a murky future in the evenly divided Senate. President Joe Biden has said he would sign the bill into law.
The act would allow Black people and others to wear their hair how they want without fear of being punished or targeted. More than a dozen states — including California, New Jersey and New York — have passed versions of the bill.
Campbell said her experience last month speaks to the need for it.
"I had to finish the lift in a way where my hair wasn't the way that I wanted it to be. It made me feel less confident," she said. "And it stripped, like, a little bit of myself away at that point."
The Mississippi High School Activities Association has since changed the rule and said powerlifters will be allowed to wear beads next season.
But Campbell, a junior at Bruce High School, where a majority of the student body is white, said that will do nothing to address the trauma she experienced.
"I tried to forget about it because it did make me feel bad," she said. "It made me feel low, like humiliated in a way."
"I'm just a teenage girl," she added.
Campbell's experience has drawn comparisons to a December 2018 incident in which Andrew Johnson, a Black varsity high school wrestler in New Jersey with dreadlocks, was forced to choose between cutting his hair or forfeiting his match. Johnson, then 16, went on to win the match. His experience sparked a state civil rights probe.
In Minnesota last month, a mother said her 12-year-old son's teacher cut his Afro without her permission. Tadow McReynolds posted a video of her son's botched haircut to TikTok that she said was viewed more than 1 million times. In a series of Facebook posts, she said her son "was really violated" and that the school had acknowledged no fault.
McReynolds declined a request for an interview, saying she wanted her and her son's lives "to be back as normal as possible." The school's principal, Matthew Kasowicz, who is white, declined to comment on McReynolds' allegations, saying he was prohibited under state and federal law from discussing individual students or employees.
Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman, D-N.J., the lead sponsor of the Crown Act, said hair discrimination disproportionately affects Black people, and how a person wears their hair has no impact on their ability to do a job, obtain an education or compete in sports.
"As a student, this is an insidious form of discrimination," Watson Coleman said in an interview. "It needs to be eliminated. There needs to be consequences for those who violate that law."
She said the bill would amend civil rights laws to extend the definition of illegal discrimination to include natural hair or hairstyles that people wear to communicate or emulate the African or Black culture, such as Afros, braids, Bantu knots, locs and twists.
"We shouldn't have to deal with this at this time, in 2022, in the most diverse country in the world," Watson Coleman said. "And to see these events continue to take place suggests the very urgent need to pass this legislation in the Senate."
When Desiree Bullock moved from Cincinnati to East Bernard, Texas, in February, she said she was prevented from enrolling her son, Dyree Williams, in East Bernard High School because of his hair. She said a guidance counselor told her his hair went against the school district's dress code policy for male students, a copy of which she provided to NBC News. It states that "braided hair or twisted rows/strands will not be allowed" and that boys' hair may not extend below the eyebrows, tops of the ears or a "conventional standup shirt collar." The majority of students at the school are white, according to data from the Education Department's National Center for Education Statistics.
Bullock said she told the counselor that her son has locs, and she said the counselor replied, "Well, he's going to have to cut those." Bullock said she then contacted Courtney Hudgins, the superintendent of the East Bernard Independent School District, to seek an exemption for her son but she was shot down. In an email shared with NBC News, Hudgins told Bullock: "Assuming the children can meet the dress code requirements, as well as all necessary paperwork for enrollment, they are welcome to enroll with our district registrar."
Reached via email, Hudgins did not answer specific questions regarding Bullock's allegations, including whether Williams' locs would prevent him from enrolling in the high school. In a statement, Hudgins said the school district "has not denied enrollment to the individual involved in this situation, as no enrollment or registration documents have been filed. East Bernard ISD intends to comply with state law regarding enrollment and attendance if and when an enrollment application is completed."
Bullock, who provides home care for students and adults with developmental disabilities, said she is now home-schooling her son and two of her other children, ages 12 and 14. Williams said he feels like he is being discriminated against and that being home-schooled has prevented him from competing in high school sports, something he looked forward to.
"It really impacted me hard," he said.
Bullock said the episode has also taken a toll on his self-esteem, but she has assured him he doesn't have to change his hair for anyone.
"The type of parent I am, I talk to my child all the time and I let him know, whatever they think about you, that's something within them, not you," she said.
Bullock is hopeful the Crown Act will become a national law.
"I do plan on staying in Texas," she said. "I actually plan for that law to pass and for things to change."

AARON SORKIN'S "WOMAN PROBLEM" AND THE NEWSROOM
After binging on The Newsroom (and loving it) created by Aaron Sorkin I got to thinking about his reputed "woman problem" when some YouTube commenter described all the female characters on the show as "twits." That's a characterization I strongly disagree with, and will show why, but also can't shake the intuitive sense that his portrayal is rightly controversial. By that I mean it is right that it should be a matter of discussion, not that it is necessarily wrong. The people holding the discussion need to decide that for themselves.
First the bald facts. Women in this drama hold power: Leona founded and still owns the company, Mackenzie is the Executive Producer of the network's flagship news program with a male second-in-command and many male staff, Sloan is the acknowledged smartest person in the company with far more lucrative prospects awaiting her should she choose them, Maggie is promoted instantly from a personal aide to an associate producer by a woman despite her youth and inexperience. Women are in leadership roles with real power that they do exercise.
In their relationships to men, the women in The Newsroom engage in give and take.
Mackenzie may look at Will like a doe-eyed schoolgirl at times but she's in love with him and is self-recriminating about previous behaviors. She isn't like that with any other male characters. Even with Will she frequently takes charge and makes him follow her direction, which he does. Mac exercises real power in her relationship with Will from episode one on. When Will doles out his "punishments" she only takes them to the degree that she believes she should. She holds the power at any time to say, "That's enough!" which she does in regards to the engagement ring. When she does that he realizes he's gone too far and changes his behavior.
Maggie coddles Don in most of the scenes we see of them and breaks up with him mostly in scenes we don't see. I'd venture to guess that the early breakups happen because the relationship has no room for her passion and she gets tired of soothing his ego to make things work. In contrast, Maggie's drawn to Jim because he awakens and allows room for her passion. Most employees who confront and yell at their bosses as much as she does with Jim would be suspended and/or fired. He lets her get away with it to a degree because he recognizes that that same passion drives her to become an excellent journalist. And because he likes her. Both are true. Every once in awhile he has to reprimand her in public to assert authority over his team or it gives permission to his other staff to behave the same way. Maggie is no shrinking violet. She is strong and self-directed and refuses to allow a man to control her. Most of her errors come from inexperience and human frailty. None of them occur because she's a woman.
Sloan clearly wears the pants in her relationship to Don which, to his surprise, he doesn't mind. Ever once in awhile, though, they switch roles or just relate as equals. Don goes from dating the young intern who part of him wants to dominate to dating the highly intelligent, self-directed professional who no man can dominate and becomes a better version of himself as a result. Sloan's errors in her first broadcast about Fukushima occur not because she is scared by Will as a man but because she's scared by him as respected professional. His gender doesn't matter to her. When Charlie yells at her about it she tells him strongly, "Do not call me 'girl,' sir!" And that's to the head of the News Division.
Leona clearly rules the roost and fights with Charlie as an equal or as a subordinate, never as a superior. They fight the way old friends do.
In no respect are women as a class portrayed as inferior or subordinate to the power of men. So why do I get that intuitive itch that there's something old-fashioned about Sorkin's writing on gender relations?
I think it's that some of the male characters in The Newsroom tend to be the carriers of logic and reasoning while the female characters tend to be the carriers of emotional expression. This isn't always true: Sloan is highly logical (while also passionate) and Charlie is highly emotional (while also reasonable) and Neal carries both in balance. It's certainly true, however, of the Jim & Maggie relationship which is intended as a reflection of the older Will & Mackenzie one. Remember how, in episode one, Mackenzie points out Maggie to Jim and tells him that she's a younger version of her before she grew into herself and got hotter with age? And why has Jim long been Mackenzie's choice for supervising producer? Could it be because he reminds her of Will? I think so. I also think it's fair to assume that Sorkin does not intend for that rational/emotional dichotomy to typify all gender relations since he gives us alternate examples. More likely it's because Sorkin is a brainy guy who prefers an emotionally expressive woman to bring balance into his life. When he writes romance it comes out of who he is, what he likes. That's how he connects to the material at a feeling level. Some viewers may prefer a flip on those traditional associations and the Don & Sloan relationship may have been his attempt to provide that. It's not where Sorkin feels at his strongest or most natural, though, so he writes what he knows.
There ARE problems with The Newsroom, though, that I think if addressed would have reduced criticism. In no way should bosses be allowed to date subordinates over whose careers they have an influence. The producers decide what stories are aired. The career of a journalist rises and falls with the number and quality of stories they get aired. Dating a subordinate in this environment is a breach of ethics and most professional workplace standards. To be fair, Maggie was first an intern then a personal aide and only became an associate producer (journalist) as Don was on his way out so it wasn't a total breach; definitely in the gray area, though. The sexual tension between Jim and Maggie, obvious to everyone (as Sloan pointed out in the finale), often broke out into open conflict. Mackenzie should have addressed this conflict as their supervisor but instead encouraged it. As Jim points out it was Mac's idea for him to get together with Maggie in the first place. Again, it was Mac's advice to Jim to "gather ye rosebuds while ye may" that led to his and Maggie's first kiss and then Jim deciding this was wrong. Mackenzie's regrets about her relationship with Will colored her judgment and led her to offer advice that may have been okay coming from a friend but was inappropriate coming from a supervisor. She could have been rightly disciplined or even fired by HR if found out. Jim does decide that he can't date a subordinate however he feels but Mac should have intervened and threatened to move one of them out if they couldn't handle the tension in a professional manner. In the series finale Jim offers the Supervising Producer position to the woman he's in love with. How is that not an HR violation? How would Maggie's career not be dogged by rumors of "sleeping her way to the top" if she accepts it?
The other thing is the way emotional conflicts between several of the characters break out into office wide battles. Talk about an unsafe working environment! I can't see how the entire management staff wasn't fired on an almost weekly basis. And when Mackenzie commends Maggie for her loyalty by saying she wouldn't complain to HR if her hair was on fire I cringed. Is that the message you want to send out in a #MeToo world?
Aaron Sorkin says he likes to write "very romantically, very idealistically." The chaos in the newsroom is intended for laughs, not to be taken as a serious reflection of a workplace. The characters are flawed and frequently do not do what they should. The lack of HR supervision is even mentioned by a character in season one so there's awareness that liberties are being taken. I don't think there's an inherent woman problem here, just a production not as sensitive as it might be to the struggles women face in the workplace. There are good reasons why "no dating" policies are in place, why it's unprofessional to carry your personal life into the workplace. Workplace comedies routinely feature HR nightmares for the sake of laughs: Brooklyn 99 is a good example. We don't take them seriously. It's the sheer intelligence of The Newsroom and the realistic setting that may make the comedy part seem more serious than it is. Personally I see the show as a kind of joyful fantasy; Sports Night without the canned laughter. If you can separate the fantastic from the realistic I think you'll find that The Newsroom is actually very empowering for women.

Future Thoughts
Forty Quinn x Fiancée!Reader
Warnings: Last minute dinner preparations and accusations.
Notes: Another request! Amazing how little attention Forty gets. Anyway, I hope I didn’t get too carried away with the plot of the show. Since Candace isn’t in the picture, I thought Y/N here could be a (sort of) replacement for tracking down Joe’s evil doing 🤯🤯
Your limbs are being stretched up to the sky as you climb out of bed and walk yourself to the thermostat.
You didn’t realize how fast the temperature would drop over the course of the night, but you weren’t about to sleep with a frozen ass.
Not like you could fall asleep now that you’ve fully awakened yourself to heat up the apartment, but at least it would be warmer by morning.
It’s dark outside and the street lights are still on. If you had to guess, you’d say it was past midnight.
Glancing at the clock, you were right. It was 3 am.
That’s too late to suddenly want to go back to sleep, right? Because 3 am quickly becomes 4 am which is far too close to 5 am, the time you’re usually awake and ready to begin brainstorming your personal projects.
You come to the conclusion that sleep will not envelop you at this hour. But, to make this time worth it, you know you’ll need to do something productive.
You walk into the kitchen and turn on the overhanging lights.
On the counter sits an all-too-familiar large yellow parcel.
You’ll have to look through it eventually, there’s no harm in starting now.
You sit yourself down at one of the stools and begin sliding the contents out of the parcel. Inside, you find multiple photographs of an old friend on her wedding day and you scatter them about.
You’re observing. Looking for the best of the best... which is something you do quite often. You’re a professional photographer and rather than creating your own unique pieces, you find yourself doing wedding or newborn photo ops. You’re quite popular in your field, but you feel unsatisfied.
You bite your thumb as you’re drawn to a particular image of the brides looking into each other’s eyes.
As you lean forward to observe it in detail, two firm hands place themselves on your hips and cause you to jolt.
“What’re you doing awake? It’s 3 am.” Forty asks. He places his chin on your shoulder and observes the scattered photographs with tired eyes.
“I turned up the thermostat and decided I’d start work early.” You reply.
His hands slide down your hips and rest on your thighs. “Those are cute pictures. Reminds me of us.”
You smile. He can’t see your face, but the way you speak makes it apparent. “Which one draws you in the most? They commissioned me to create a collage for their new home.”
Forty’s brow furrows as he observes the counter as a whole. He takes a moment, but returns to Earth to give you the answer you were searching for.
“Top left.”
The top left photograph is of the brides noses touching. Their hands are entwined and they seem absolutely lost in each other’s eyes. It’s the exact image you were observing moments ago.
“I see.” You reply shortly.
“Well, now that we’ve chosen a picture for your project— Let’s get back into that comfy bed in the other room.”
“I don’t know, I’m not feeling tired anymore.”
“Awe, come on, baby.” His short beard tickles your neck. “I’ll make it worth your time.” You can hear it in his voice... He’s pouting like a child again.
“Forty, can I ask you a question?” You’re twisting your engagement ring around your finger.
“Shoot.”
“Why did you propose to me?”
Forty goes silent for a moment. You give him time to reflect over your question, and you yourself get lost in thought.
“Well,” He begins. “We were sleeping in the same bed and we were facing each other. You were fast asleep, but I couldn’t get this feeling out of my chest.” He turns the stool you’re sitting in to face him and searches your eyes. “Every time I looked at you, I realized I felt something I never had before.”
You can’t help but crack a smile. You pretend to be biting your thumb to hide it.
“Maybe I just loathe you more than anyone else— but I like to think it’s love and anticipation and excitement for a future with you.”
You’re looking away now with a bright smile. “I loathe you too.”
“I don’t think I can fall asleep now. Want me to make you some breakfast?”
“That would be lovely!” You reply with a quick peck on the lips.
~
It’s still fairly early in the day by the time you’re finished the commissioned wedding project. You lean it against a free wall for pickup.
This wall just so happens to also have your calendar, so you take the opportunity to unhook the pen and check off the day before.
“Huh.” You’re observing the calendar closely. “Forty?”
“Yeah?” Forty eventually calls out from the other room.
“What’s L+W Dinner about? You have it booked for tonight.”
“Oh! Love and her new boy toy, Will, are coming over for dinner tonight.” He walks into the room so neither of you shout.
“You didn’t think about telling me this ahead of time? I don’t think I’m ready.” You’re upset and he notices immediately.
“I’m sorry, it was planned yesterday and I forgot to mention it.”
“Love knows how to cook and I don’t. This is going to be embarrassing.” You cover your face with both your hands.
If you want to be on par with Love, you’ll have to start dinner preparations now.
~
Done.
You’ve done it! You spent your entire afternoon prepping for the dinner and even had time to bake a pie following your grand-mother’s recipe.
But rest was yet to be around the corner, for you had an evening to get through.
You’re all seated at the table with your respected plates.
You feel a wave of anxiety every time Love takes a bite. She seems to be enjoying it despite your doubtful nature.
Love and Forty are now exchanging words and your eyes trail over the stranger, Will.
He’s either looking at Love or looking at his plate. By the time he looks at you, you’re giving him a stern stare.
“How’s Los Angeles treating you? I heard you moved not too long ago.” You ask.
“Everyone seems friendly.” He responds.
“Where were you living before?”
“New York.”
You tilt your head up in understanding and pick up your drink for a sip.
“New York is nice. I lived there for a bit while figuring myself out.” You state.
Will is smiling casually, but you notice something change in his eyes as you talk.
“How did you two meet?” He gestures to Forty and yourself.
“A mattress store. And you two?” You answer and are quick to turn the topic onto him.
“Anavrin.” He replies.
The conversation seems hostile as you both continue to reply with quick answers.
“And where do you work?”
“Anavrin.” Love butts in. “He’s the bookstore clerk.”
“Ah. Met at Anavrin, work at Anavrin.” You’re smiling as you pick at your plate. “Thats cute.”
Forty places his hand on your thigh. He thinks you’re just having one of your moments, but you know there’s something off about this Will guy.
You look down at your plate and pick at your food. “Do you often find your dates in the workplace?”
You don’t have to look to know that Will’s smile is gone.
Forty squeezes your leg and you jolt up. “Don’t mind her, old sport! She’s not very open to new people.” He’s smiling brightly toward Love and Will, even with your glare directed at him.
For the remainder of the evening, you’re quiet. You answer whatever questions come up but you mostly keep to yourself.
They leave early and, from the goodness of your own heart, you give them the pie to take home.
Once they’re gone and out of your hair, Forty shuts the door and faces you.
“What was that all about?” He asks with an edge in his tone.
“What do you mean?” You’re playing innocent.
“You know what I mean. Don’t play stupid with me.” He walks toward you as you stand there, avoiding eye contact. “Don’t fight me on this, just tell me what’s wrong...”
“I know him.” You state. “Or, well... I know I’ve seen him before.”
“Will?”
“I don’t think his name is Will.” You sigh and hold your face. “I don’t remember his name. But I know it isn’t Will.”
“Why do you say that?” Forty ducks down to make eye contact as he pulls your head up to meet his gaze. He looks concerned.
“I don’t know. Am I going crazy? I think I’m going crazy.”
“You know what I think?” Forty reaches out and brushes any loose strands out of your face. “I think you’re stressed and need some rest. Waking up at 3 am probably wasn’t a good call.”
You take a deep breath and run your hands through his hair. “You’re right.”
“Here’s what’s gonna happen.” He gently tugs on your shirt. “You’re going to take all this off, get into a warm bath, and I’m going to mix you your favourite drink.”
“Oh, Forty.” You meet his eyes with a hesitant smile as you wrap your arms around his neck. “Where did I get such an amazing future husband?”
“The mattress store.”

bts astro soulmate reading | for vanessa
sign: taurus sun | leo moon | virgo rising
lover: min yoongi | soulmate: kim taehyung
Those born with their Sun in Taurus are known for their reliability and fortitude: they know the power of making a plan, staying the course and seeing it through to the end. People initially experience you as a thoughtful, diligent, and strong-willed individual who can be trusted to make key decisions not lose their cool under pressure, establishing you as a valuable figure both in the workplace and in positions of power but also in your personal relationships. Your Virgo rising, or how you present to others, only furthers your presence as a matter-of-fact, hard working person who values perfection and purposefulness in everything that you do no matter how seemingly small and unimportant. Beneath this stoic, occasionally cold exterior is fiery Leo Moon, which brims with a boundless energy that comprises your internal state of emotions and reactions. Leo is driven by ego and being seen, meaning you derive great value from being appreciated from all of your hard work, and you're not afraid to ask for it. When the elements come together, you are likely to experience profound clashes between your outgoing, showy and prideful Leo Moon and the patient, balanced nature of your Taurus Sun. Your specific placements make you one of the most opinionated and brazen signs in the zodiac, meaning you are highly respected but not always liked. Let's face it: not everyone is ready for your level of honesty! And while this can sometimes leave you feeling misunderstood (Leo loves to be loved), the strength of your Taurus Sun affords you heightened sense of self and the world around you alongside a keen understanding that not everyone is for you. Once the bruises on your ego have healed, you're more than happy to pour your signature loyalty, compassion and dedication into the many people that do adore you, creating lifelong relationships that are of the most importance to you.
A Moon in Leo means you have a deep confidence gained from your vast life experience, and your Taurus Sun knows how to use this knowledge to move you forward towards your best self. This inner security allows you to speak candidly, something that others deeply admire about you and undoubtedly has contributed to your success in career and relationships. In being able to very frankly admit to your strengths and weaknesses, you are able to advance ahead of others who are still unsure of their place in the universe and focus on achieving the greatness you know you are capable of reaching, going for nothing less than perfection. It is no surprise that you are selective with your relationships, naturally gravitating towards people who match you level of intellectualism and curiosity. It is Min Yoongi, the sensitive, creative Pisces, that strikes your interest at a large dinner party hosted by a shared acquaintance within your high-rolling social circle from various industries. Preferring to lay back on the sidelines, Yoongi takes in the room, his eyes becoming fixate on you as you light up the room with your Leo fire while deeply immersed in raucous conversation about current events. A Virgo Moon, Yoongi immediately connects with your very logical and perceptive mind, but his lively Aries Venus is both amused and turned on by the evident passion underlying your words as you so expertly articulate your point of view. It is towards the end of the night after countless passing stares when Yoongi finally approaches you, the low, seductive hum of his voice sending you into a daze as his dark eyes pierce into you. It's not everyday you hear people speak their mind in this way - your authenticity is refreshing. I'd love to hear more of your thoughts. Sit with me? This combination of praise and immediate appreciation for your inner self is almost foreplay in and of itself, which only intensifies with the natural flow of the conversation that follows. Not one to waste time, you tell Yoongi to call you when he's free to meet again while he's in town, and it's through the long, winding exchanges in the days and weeks that follow which sets this love affair into motion.
Pisces and Taurus are two signs that connect on a highly emotional level, falling for each other's minds before even thinking of moving to the physical. Underneath your strong, Virgo exterior lies a highly empathetic, good-hearted soul that senses a similar kindness in Yoongi - a quality that you sometimes overlook Though softs spoken at first, you enjoy seeing him open up about his passion for music and artistic pursuits which are much different from your own career path. While you don't enjoy too much leisure in your daily life (there's so much to do!) you find yourself spending hours in bed with Yoongi with whom time simply stands still. His innate passion extends into sex, which you two take your time getting to but inevitably erupts in something very intense and romantic. You are both extremely sensual signs representing the art of pleasure, and nowhere does it become clearer than when Yoongi's lips are on yours, devouring every inch of you while one hand rests behind your neck and the other is free to explore the rest of your body. He is soft but commanding in his presence, his eyes laser-focused on yours as his fingers slide your panties to the side to enter your core, expertly curving inside you and driving a loud moan from your lips. Yoongi is the type to make you fall in love with his sensitivity but also his genuine care for your orgasm, his movements sending shivers throughout your spine as he draws you closer and closer to your edge and stopping only when you are trembling and thrusting against his fingers to ride out your high. A Pisces gets lost in your pleasure, wanting to satisfy you to the fullest extent. You're so fucking beautiful, I can't wait to taste you.
Though highly compatible in bed, this is not a forever duo due to the conflicting nature of your placements. The classic Taurus/Pisces dilemma lies their innately different expectations and life values: while you are both money-motivated, you work in entirely different ways to achieve your goals. You deeply crave the stability that comes with financial independence, while Yoongi's Pisces, makes him much more interested in the freedom that wealth offers. He is the free-flowing fish, who often spends a great deal of time alone inside his fantasy world where he is able to bring his artistic visions to life, neglecting you in the process. You prefer to live with two feet firmly on the ground, and while his Virgo Moon makes him driven, he does not match your level of intensity in this way. His laid-back demeanor, while initially endearing to you, over time this becomes frustrating as it does not align with your need to be doted on and truly adored on a daily basis. It soon becomes clear that your visions of the future are not in sync, and it is the decisive Taurus that ultimately cuts ties in pursuits of someone that is a better fit.
However hurt you are when one relationship prospect ends, your pride does not let you stay down for long - after all, you are all about improving and moving forward. Your sign is likely to immerse themselves in work projects or helping friends and family when they need a distraction and something to get lost in. A Virgo rising has an innate love of learning that knows no limit, and you are likely to enjoy travel that involves a historical/educational component. It is while on a solo adventure through Rome that you meet a fellow wanderer - his dark brown, curly hair falling across his face as his eyes come to meet yours, revealing perhaps the most gorgeous face you've ever seen. I'm Taehyung, pleasure to meet you.
You are dual in nature, and you need someone to appreciate that in full - quirks and all. Enter Kim Taehyung, the enigmatic Capricorn whose varied emotional complexity matches your own and effortlessly clicks. Immediately you come to admire each others shared levels of honesty and ambition, traits you explore over walks through the city streets and subsequently over long-distance phone calls once you return home. From the start these two earth signs are like magnets to each other, and the chemistry's pull is undeniable. Your impatient Leo spirit has likely landed you in trouble by rushing into things romantically, and the Capricorn man is more than happy to take things move at your pace - in fact, he enjoys nothing more than a slow build. While hours-long conversations floating from topic to topic may be a waste of time, with Taehyung it is easy to get lost in the sultriness of his voice, but also the way he romantically views the world around him - the charm emanating from his Aries Moon is infectious and speaks to your soul that also wants to achieve but cares deeply about people. He is also exceptionally lighthearted, knowing exactly when to shift from the pragmatic, hard-working idol to laid-back and silly friend that just wants to make you laugh with a random meme or nonsensical text. Traditional at heart, you're more than happy to be wooed, allowing Tae someone to plan a date and show you an excellent time by curating according to your fine tastes. A Leo Moon knows the value of themselves and their company so doesn't settle for anything half-assed, your Virgo rising makes you prone to criticism, while your Taurus means you are particularly averse to anything that is careless or superficial. You prefer grand gestures to be thoughtful in nature, and you are pleasantly surprised makes you feel appreciated from afar, repeatedly surprising you with gifts delivered that perfectly match your style. Thought this would suit you nicely. Show me on video, I can't wait to see you in it... By the time you are back together in person, it's almost as if reuniting with a long lost friend who you also can't wait to ride.
After several weeks of foreplay over the phone, you two waste no time when you find yourself standing at the entryway of his hotel suite. The intuitive Capricorn male can easily recognize a bit of a praise kink within you, one that his very task-oriented side is happy to experiment with and execute in in the bedroom. His Aquarius in Venus is creative and loves to play, excited to explore dominant/submissive behavior you've expressed interest in and very much wanting to be the one that allows you to relinquish the control you have on all areas of your life. It is truly unnerving how dual he is in nature, his eyes darkening to expose his dominant side that senses your anticipation at the appearance of a small toy, the tension steadily building between your thighs as you imagine how it will feel against you. A true tease, Tae lights you on fire with ease as he moves to close the gap between your bodies, his fingers gently tracing your jaw and neck as his lips graze your trembling lips. Patience, my love. It's going to be a long evening. Tae's Capricorn/Aquarius combo alongside your Taurus/Leo means that there is an unpredictability in the dynamic, resulting in many sexual possibilities. You're both more than capable of switching roles, your Taurus takes the lead as Taehyung stares up at you in awe, his lips falling apart as you press your breasts against his strong chest. You enjoy coaxing praises from his lips as you straddle him, grinding down onto his length slowly as a desperate moan escapes his lips and he bucks his hips, aching to fill you up. You've teased me all this time, let's see how you like being toyed with. There is something so deeply satisfying about his deep voice groaning and telling you how perfect you are as you bounce on his cock, stopping strategically to to edge him and hear him beg with those beautiful lips of his. This is a pairing that is as good at long-drawn out passionate sessions as they are with to-the-point quickies, learning with ease how to make the other come undone in a matter of minutes. It is not unusual for a 20 min break in the day to turn into you and Tae on the couch, your leg over his shoulder with his finger rubbing your clit as his strokes feverishly into you and smiling as he sets a new record. While sex between these two can be extremely gentle, especially after days apart, there is a natural bit of a competition here: who can make the other come the hardest? Either way, you both win.
Together, a Capricorn and Taurus build a life of comfort, stability, and trust that could only be created by two earth signs. Above all else, you need the emotional stability that comes from being with a like-minded soul who is as strong, independent and decisive as you are - someone who will let you shine brightly while confidently pursuing their own goals. But at the end of a long day, your partner also needs to be able to consistently shower you with the love and affection you crave - almost as if it were their second job. While you certainly get off on being admired by many, at a deep level you truly desire one lifelong love who only has eyes for you. You find this in Capricorn Tae, a highly disciplined, hardworking spirit who also enjoys surprising you with his quirky, unconventional nature that brings out your inner child and proves to be a life partner in all ways. With a shared love for learning and individual perfectionism, this is a duo that will likely achieve greatness in very different fields but find a way to make them mesh well - Taehyung in music and art and you in whatever path you choose - while providing a level of understanding to each other that few others can. This combination enjoys a very stable and established home base in each others hearts given a high importance placed on wealth and comfort, but not extravagance or over-indulgence. This is a pairing that likely has an apartment in the heart of the city for business matters, but prefers the coziness of their primary residence outside of the city. It is in this home that you are able to fully decompress from a day of leading and producing to simply be your unique selves, the space serving as a sanctuary for you to get lost in pure domestic bliss. Possessing a complimentary balance of temperaments and desires, Capricorn and Taurus is a match for the ages, one that is long-lasting and rooted in family, loyalty and prosperity.

A Black Student Was Suspended For His Locs, But The School Says It Wasn’t Discrimination
The same week his state outlawed racial discrimination based on hairstyles, a Black high school student in Texas was suspended because school officials said his locs violated the district’s dress code.
Darryl George, a junior at Barbers Hill High School in Mont Belvieu, received an in-school suspension after he was told his hair fell below his eyebrows and ear lobes. George, 17, wears his hair in thick twisted dreadlocks, tied on top of his head, said his mother, Darresha George.
George served the suspension last week. His mother said he plans to return to the Houston-area school Monday, wearing his dreadlocks in a ponytail, even if he is required to attend an alternative school as a result.
The incident recalls debates over hair discrimination in schools and the workplace and is already testing the state’s newly enacted CROWN Act, which took effect Sept. 1.
The law, an acronym for “Create a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair,” is intended to prohibit race-based hair discrimination and bars employers and schools from penalizing people because of hair texture or protective hairstyles including Afros, braids, dreadlocks, twists or Bantu knots. Texas is one of 24 states that has enacted a version of the CROWN Act.
A federal version of the CROWN Act passed in the House of Representatives last year, but was not successful in the Senate.
For Black people, hairstyles are more than just a fashion statement. Hair has always played an important role across the Black diaspora, said Candice Matthews, national minister of politics for the New Black Panther Nation.
“Dreadlocks are perceived as a connection to wisdom,” Matthews said. “This is not a fad, and this is not about getting attention. Hair is our connection to our soul, our heritage and our connection to God.”
After the suspension, “his grades are suffering, which also means he is not able to play football or participate in any extracurriculars,” Darresha George said. -(source: nbc news)

Afros, braids, dreadlocks and twists. California lawmakers have passed a bill to protect black employees and students by outlawing discrimination against people who wear those hairstyles.
"The history of our nation is riddled with laws and societal norms that equated 'blackness,' and the associated physical traits, for example, dark skin, kinky and curly hair to a badge of inferiority," the bill notes.
It contends that professionalism was, and still is, tied to European standards — and that restrictive grooming policies have unfairly targeted black workers and students more than any other group.
The measure, referred to as the CROWN Act (Create a Respectful and Open Workplace for Natural Hair), passed Thursday in the state Senate, 69 to 0.
"While we got no No votes, there were some people who chose to abstain," Sen. Holly Mitchell, D-Los Angeles, told NPR. She added, "I have no idea why they abstained."
Mitchell says she has received numerous letters from distraught constituents. "The sheer volume of women and men and parents of students who have been sent home because someone deems their braids, twists or locks were inappropriate for workplace settings, the sheer volume of people, suggests this clearly is a law whose time has come," Mitchell said (while she was getting her hair groomed).
She recalled the viral video of a black high school wrestler in New Jersey who was forced to cut his dreadlocks or forfeit a match.
And then there is Chastity Jones, a black woman who said she lost a job opportunity in Alabama because she refused to cut off her dreadlocks. A federal appeals court ruled in her case that dreadlocks were not an immutable characteristic of black people.
California's bill contends that the definition of race would include "traits historically associated with race," such as hair texture and "protective styles," like twists and braids.
...New York and New Jersey have proposed similar legislation. And New York City enacted its own policy in February which protects cornrows, Afros, fades and other hairstyles. "Black hairstyles are protected racial characteristics under the [New York City Human Rights Law] because they are an inherent part of Black identity," New York's Commission on Human Rights said.
Now passed, the California bill heads to the governor to be signed.
Go California! These protective laws should go national!
