Key Concepts in Data Mining: Questions and Solutions for Advanced Learners

Data mining is a vital field of study within computer science that involves discovering patterns and knowledge from large datasets. This process allows organizations and researchers to identify trends, predict outcomes, and uncover hidden insights. For students studying data mining at an advanced level, tackling complex theoretical questions is essential. In this blog, we’ll explore a couple of challenging data mining theory questions and provide expert-level solutions. If you're looking for data mining Homework Help, these insights will offer a solid foundation for your understanding.
Question 1: Explain the concept of Association Rule Mining and discuss its significance in data mining.
Association Rule Mining is a technique in data mining used to find interesting relationships or patterns among a set of items in large datasets. It focuses on identifying rules that indicate how the occurrence of one item is associated with the occurrence of another. For example, in retail, Association Rule Mining can help identify that customers who buy bread are likely to also buy butter, forming a strong association between these two products.
This concept relies on three main components:
Support: The frequency of occurrence of an itemset in the dataset.
Confidence: The likelihood that an item Y is bought when item X is bought.
Lift: A measure of the effectiveness of a rule, considering the possibility of the rule occurring by chance.
Association Rule Mining has broad applications, especially in market basket analysis, where businesses use these insights to recommend products to customers, design promotions, and manage inventory. It is also crucial in medical research, fraud detection, and e-commerce, where understanding relationships between variables can lead to better predictions and decisions.
Solution: Association Rule Mining works by generating itemsets from a dataset and applying the aforementioned metrics to identify strong rules. These rules help understand the relationships between different items in the dataset. For instance, retail companies can leverage these patterns to improve cross-selling strategies and enhance customer experience.
The significance of Association Rule Mining in data mining cannot be overstated. It plays a pivotal role in pattern discovery, helping businesses make informed decisions. Its application has revolutionized sectors like retail, healthcare, and even social media, where user behavior patterns are studied to make personalized recommendations.
Question 2: What is Clustering in Data Mining and how does it contribute to data analysis?
Clustering is an unsupervised learning technique in data mining where the goal is to group a set of objects or data points into clusters, such that objects within the same cluster are more similar to each other than to those in other clusters. The primary objective of clustering is to uncover underlying structures or patterns in data without the need for predefined labels.
There are several types of clustering algorithms, including K-means, hierarchical clustering, and DBSCAN. These algorithms vary in their approach, but they all aim to organize data into meaningful groups. Clustering is widely used in applications like customer segmentation, image processing, and anomaly detection, where it’s crucial to understand the inherent structure of data.
Solution: Clustering in data mining can be seen as a tool for exploratory data analysis. By dividing data into clusters, analysts can gain a better understanding of the distribution and relationships of data points. For example, in customer segmentation, businesses can use clustering to group customers with similar purchasing behaviors, allowing for more targeted marketing strategies.
The key advantage of clustering lies in its ability to identify patterns without prior knowledge of the data's structure. This unsupervised nature makes it particularly useful for datasets where the relationships between data points are not immediately obvious.
Different clustering algorithms can be applied depending on the nature of the data and the problem being addressed. K-means is effective when the number of clusters is known in advance and the data is spherical in shape, while hierarchical clustering is more suitable for nested data structures. DBSCAN, on the other hand, is ideal for data that contains noise or outliers.
Conclusion:
Data mining offers a powerful set of tools for analyzing complex datasets and uncovering valuable insights. Both Association Rule Mining and Clustering play key roles in this process, helping organizations understand relationships between variables and group data points based on similarity. The applications of these techniques span a wide range of fields, from retail and marketing to healthcare and beyond.
For students struggling with these topics or those needing detailed explanations, data mining Homework Help is an excellent resource to enhance understanding and achieve academic success. With the right guidance and practice, mastering data mining concepts can lead to a deeper appreciation of the field and its applications in real-world problem-solving.

Dynamic modeling in UML, specifically through sequence diagrams, offers a powerful way to visualize the interactions and flow of messages between objects in a system. Let's delve into some master-level sample questions and answers to showcase the depth of this topic.
Sample Questions:
1. Design a sequence diagram for an online shopping system where a user adds items to the cart, proceeds to checkout, and completes the purchase. Highlight user interactions and system responses.
Answer:
uml
@startuml actor User participant Cart participant Checkout participant Payment User -> Cart: Add items to cart activate Cart Cart -> Checkout: Proceed to checkout activate Checkout Checkout -> Payment: Complete purchase activate Payment Payment --> Checkout: Confirmation deactivate Payment Checkout --> Cart: Confirmation deactivate Checkout Cart --> User: Order confirmation deactivate Cart @enduml
2. Implement a Java code snippet for a class involved in the sequence diagram above, demonstrating the handling of cart operations.
Answer:
java
public class ShoppingCart { private List<Item> items = new ArrayList<>(); public void addItem(Item item) { items.add(item); } public List<Item> getItems() { return items; } // Other relevant methods... }
3. Explain the use of asynchronous messages in a sequence diagram and provide an example scenario where they are beneficial.
Answer: Asynchronous messages in UML sequence diagrams represent interactions where the sender does not need to wait for a response. For example, in a messaging system, a user might send a message to another user without waiting for an immediate reply. THE PERFECT MOTHER ― Ultimate 'Mom' DR Scripting Pack ୭ ˚. ᵎᵎ
― ❝ I’ve never seen someone so naturally meant to be a parent ❞
(Anon request! hope u enjoy :3)

↳ 01 ⋆˚✿ Your touch is a cure-all. Whether it’s a scraped knee or a bad day, a simple hand on the back/forehead kiss melts away any discomfort.
↳ 02 ⋆˚✿ You never run out of patience, even for 'silly' things. Spilled juice? Whatever. Endless questions? No problem. A meltdown over something random? Take your time, we’ll figure it out.
↳ 03 ⋆˚✿ You’re immune to getting your hair pulled, earrings yanked, and eyes poked. A toddler could grab a fistful of your hair and yank with full force, and you wouldn’t even flinch.
↳ 04 ⋆˚✿ Your intuition is almost supernatural. You just know when your child is about to get sick or when they’re lying—even before they realize it themselves.
↳ 05 ⋆˚✿ You never forget the small details—you remember everything, from their first words to their small habits or things they love.
↳ 06 ⋆˚✿ Your voice is just so soothing, even other kids fall asleep when you hum—one lullaby verse in, and they’re out like a light.
↳ 07 ⋆˚✿ Everything in balance: you're warm but firm, fun but responsible—your kids respect you without fearing you and trust you without taking advantage.
↳ 08 ⋆˚✿ Cliché advise? never. You don’t hit your kids with generic speeches—you know exactly how to word things so they actually hear you, and in a way it will actually stick with them (positively ofc).
↳ 09 ⋆˚✿ You instantly detect lies without making a big deal out of it—you know the truth but handle it in a way that doesn’t embarrass anyone.
↳ 10 ⋆˚✿ Every child dreads medicine, except yours—either by crushing it up and mixing it or using a distraction, you make medicine actually taste nice.
↳ 11 ⋆˚✿ You give the best hugs, the kind that makes bad days disappear—even when they grow up, they’ll swear nothing feels warmer than being wrapped in your arms.
↳ 12 ⋆˚✿ In your world, yelling, threatening, or bribing aren't a thing—when you say “that’s enough,” it is. Even in the wildest moments, your kids know you mean business.
↳ 13 ⋆˚✿ Cooking while helping with homework while mentally making a grocery list? Effortless.—you’re a multitasking savant, a human embodiment of efficiency, yet you still make it look easy.
↳ 14 ⋆˚✿ No books? No problem. You weave worlds with your words, creating characters and adventures so vivid that your child begs for a sequel.
↳ 15 ⋆˚✿ You have the ability to remember every friend’s name, every teacher’s name, deadlines, etc—without even trying. It’s like your brain is a live database for their world.
↳ 16 ⋆˚✿ You can do the perfect hairstyle in a time record, effortlessly—no lumps, loose strands, or hairs falling out of place.
↳ 17 ⋆˚✿ You can remove stains like a magician. Juice, mud, marker, chocolate—you have a talent for stain removal, making clothes look brand new every time.
↳ 18 ⋆˚✿ Your presence alone can calm down any nervous child. No matter the situation, your kid just needs to hold your hand, and suddenly, everything feels okay.
↳ 19 ⋆˚✿ Before the fever, the sniffles—you just know. It’s like your body syncs with theirs, giving you a head start on medicine.
↳ 20 ⋆˚✿ You always give them just the right amount of responsibility. You push them to be independent but never overwhelm them.
↳ 21 ⋆˚✿ You never let them feel like they’re ‘too much.’ Whether they’re hyper, emotional, quiet, or talkative—you make them feel like who they are is never an inconvenience.
↳ 22 ⋆˚✿ You don’t mold them into a version of you—you give them the freedom to grow, explore, and discover who they are, knowing that no matter where life takes them, they will always have you as home.

Daminette December: 7-Mutual Plotting
Adrien lifted the hatch into Marinette's room. He froze at the chaos. Marinette turned to look at him, but all he saw was a conspiracy board on how to murder Lila. Adrien, quickly came back to his senses, climbed I and closed the door.
"What the fuck, Mari?" he whisper-shouted.
"Shhhh!" She shushed him, "See, if I can plan it carefully, I won't be caught."
Marinette smiled and turned back to admire her handiwork.
Adrien sighed, "Claws out."
Damian was at school when his emergency line rang. It was untraceable through the Justice League database.
"What did I say about phones, Mr. Wayne?" his teacher complained.
Damian stood up, grabbing his things, "It's my father and it says 'emergency'. He knows not to call me during school."
"Mr. Wayne." they growled.
"You can call him yourself, with the principal and our lawyer present." Damian declared walking out, "Emergency calls are authorized."
Damian sat in his car and sighed. He hadn't been using the 'Wayne' authority for awhile and had come to hate it as much as the 'Al Ghul' fame. Damian activated the soundproof windows and redialed the last number, on the hidden screen in the car.
"What is it?" He growled out, "Expect a call-"
"Uh, Birdy." Chat Noir spoke.
"Pussycat?" Damian replied, not expecting him to be on the line, "Why are you calling me?"
"I walked in on Minibug planning a murder." Chat admitted, turning the phone towards Marinette's wall and hideaway calendar, "She has evidence, everywhere. Think Bernard's board for 'Do the Butts Match?'"
'Habibiti.'
Damian sighed, "Yes."
His screen was suddenly filled with poster boards, papers, and strings.
"What happened?" Damian questioned.
"Well....today Lila pulled another stunt and Minibug went home early, but with all these papers, I don't know how long she's been planning." Chat Noir confessed, "It might also be because she's tired. There's been akumas every night this past week."
"Can you get rid of it?" Robin asked.
"She's not gonna like it , but you got it." Chat smiled, "Cataclysm."
Damian watched as everything vanished with a simple touch.
"How is she not screaming at you?" He wondered, out loud.
"Oh." Chat chuckled, moving the camera over to Marinette, "She didn't hear me transform and I tied her up with my tail. She fell asleep."
"I have a few calls to make." Damian responded, ending the call.
'Okay. Now, that the murder problem is solved, what do I do about you?'
Chat detransformed and looked at Marinette passed out. He carefully lifted her up and brought them to the ground.
"Tom!" he shouted, "Sabine!"
The couple rushed upstairs and found him scared, holding their daughter.
"What?" Sabine began.
"I don't know!" Adrien shouted frantically, "We-We were talking and then-Then she suddenly passed out!"
Sabine rushed over, checking for a fever.
"She was yawning and rubbing her eyes a lot." Adiren confessed, "She seemed tired these last couple days in class. Has she been really busy? I could help her with homework if she doesn't understand something!"
"She didn't tell us about any projects." Sabine replied.
"As far as we know, shes only been babysitting Manon." Tom answered, "Maybe twice a week. Three if it's important, but Nadia always checks if it's okay and it's not interrupting her schedule."
Adrien hid his scowl. He knew Alya and Nino were dumping their younger siblings on her if they saw her out and about. It seemed like her parents didnt know.
'I'll handle those two myself.'
"Why dont you head back to school, Son." Tom spoke.
"Hes right, Dear." Sabine suggested, "We can keep an eye on her and if anything changes, we'll take her to the doctor."
Adrien nodded his head and picked up his things, leaving the bakery.
'Thank you Father for the acting lessons. Onto phase two.'
"Hey!" Nino called out, "Where were you?"
Adrien smiled through his internal rage, "With Marinette."
"You were?" Alya questioned.
"Well, not that long." He answered, "She collapsed."
"What?" They cried out.
"Is she okay?" Alya pushed.
"I don't know. Her parents are keeping her home." The model answered, "We were talking and then her eyes rolled back and she fell!"
"Her parents couldn't figure out why. They said she isn't busy with projects right now and she's only been babysitting Manon, with her parent's permission." He announced, seeing them wince, "They said they might just close the bakery and take her to the hospital."
He watched as they looked over to the bakery with the 'CLOSED' sign now in full view. Adrien saw them pale and glance at each other. He knew he had gotten them worried.
'No one hurts M'Lady.'
Adrien strolled in after Nino and Alya, as they silently walked to their seats and hunched over.
"Ms. Bustier, Marinette is staying home." He announced, for the class to hear, "Her parents should be calling in soon; they might be taking her to the hospital."
"What happened?" Asked Rose.
"She collapsed during lunch." Adrien spoke, "We don't know why. She doesn't have a fever and she hasn't been too busy; just homework and babysitting."
He studied their faces and saw some had the decency to look ashamed.
"The doctor's note should say-" Lila interrupted.
"Why would she need a doctor's note?" Adrien questioned, "I just told Ms. Bustier. She can takes your word for it all the time or is mine not good enough?"
Everyone remained silent, in shock. They had never seen Adrien get like this, so upset.
"No!" Lila shouted, trying to back peddle, "That's not it, Adrien!"
"Then, Mari will be back and when she's back, she won't need a not." he growled out.
"No, Adrien-" Caline tried to interject.
"What if she's faking?" Lila called out.
Chloe stood up suddenly, "I can get Daddy to check hospital records if your all so worried and while he's doing it, we can get Lila's too."
Llila smiled, "I got to Italy for my treatments so-"
"Then, your passport records should be fine." the mayor's daughter scoffed, "Daddy doesn't have trouble talking to ambassadors."
"I wouldn't want to be a hassle." Lila pointed out.
Chloe smiled, "I can call him, right now, and get it over with. He does what I tell him."
Lila looked between Adrien and Chloe. They were smirking. They knew they had her cornered; if she pushed more about Mairnette, they would reveal everything.
"I'm sure....Marinette will tell us when she's better." Lila commented and kept her mouth shut.
Adrien took one look at Chloe and nodded, before sitting down.
Adrien let the class know the next day that Marinette was hospitalized and had to stay there for a few days. He could see that many felt bad for her, but Alya, Nino and Caline wore the guiltiest faces of them all.
'It's not like I could tell them she was tired from all the akumas. If they feel guilty, maybe they have something to be guilty about.'
When Marinette woke up, her parents demanded to know what had been going on. The doctors had told them she was mentally drained and dehydrated. Marinette looked between her parents and the doctors and broke down, realizing her miraculous was gone.
"Alya and Nino have been forcing me to babysit their siblings. Miss Bustier has been making me do so much work! She wants me to stay later and tutor people when I'm already doing so much. Then there's Manon and the bakery! My homework! I need to work on my designs!" Marinette sobbed out, "Then, there's all the akumas! Everyoen is being mean and I'm trying not to get akumatized!"
Sensing her distress, the doctor gave her a sedative so she could sleep without worry of akumas.
When Adrien arrived, he could see they were unhappy.
"Is Marinette okay?" He questioned, seeing their faces.
"Did you know?" Tom asked, "Did you know about the extra work she was doing?"
Adrien sighed as he closed the door, "Not at first; not until the day before. Marinette complained to me. She said she didn't get a choice. She would be out with Manon and the kids would suddenly run up to her, with Alya and Nino nowhere in sight. When she asked where they were, they answered that they would pick them up in two hours at the park."
"I didnt know she hadn't told you, until she collapsed." He confessed.
"You tell those two, they are banned from our bakery for two years." Sabine commanded.
"Yes, Ma'am." The model answered, "I did tell them that Marinette collapsed and how we were worried since she shouldn't be that tired from babysitting one kid."
"And?" Tom pressed.
"They have been quiet ever since." He declared, "They arent talking to anyone and most of the time keeping their heads down, like waiting to be scolded. I might have laid my concern on a bit too thick; they might believe they are the reason she is here."
"From our perspective, they did." Sabine replied.
"Another thing." Adrien winced, "I may....have told Damian, she was here."
"We'll call him." Tom spoke, softly, "You have a full schedule as well."
"Make sure you're getting rest, Dear." Sabine stated. Adrien nodded and left the room.
It had been almost a month, when the class saw Marinette again. She was walking with a guy. Alya and Nino sighed in relief. They quickly ran up to her.
"You're okay! Rose cried out.
"Are you completely better?" Asked Mylene.
"Are you coming back to school tomorrow?" Questioned Nathaniel.
"Ms. Bustier has been different since you've been gone." Announced Kim.
"No." Mari announced, "I'm never going back to that school."
"What?" Spoke Nino.
"But you're the class representative!" Alya shouted.
"You can take over, Alya." Marinette replied, "I'm sure the class rep duties will be .....significantly lessened with the board carefully watching."
"What do you mean?" Asked Juleka.
"Your teacher was forcing Marinette to do her own work." The guy announced, "She also signed her up for activities to ease your burdens, as your grades were poor. Before her collapse, she demanded Marinette begin tutoring, the likes of you."
"Wait. What?" Spoke Ivan.
"What does he mean?" Kim questioned.
"Who is this guy?" Alya demanded.
"Her boyfriend, Damian." Adrien announced, "Hey."
"Agreste." Damian nodded, "Thank you for informing me about her condition."
"Wait!" Nino shouted, "You knew?"
"That Mari had a boyfriend?" Adrien asked, "Of course, I knew. Mari's my best friend."
Marinette groaned, "Don't you know how much of a fuss he's been putting me through? You're lucky I'm not super gluing feathers to you!"
"Don't be so rude, Marinette. She can be so cruel." Lila spoke up, "Are you sure she's your girlfriend-girlfriend?"
"Bitch!" Marinette shouted, surprising them, "If I kill you are you dead-dead or just not breathing?"
Damian chuckled, "Okay, Angel. Obviously, you are still tired. We should return."
"What?" Questioned Lila, horrified.
"She's tired." Adrien stated, as if they hadn't just heard Damian speak.
"Did you not hear her threaten Lila?" Alya snapped back.
"It was a simple question," Damian declared, "but if she wants to feel threatened, it is a simple task."
The class looked between Lila, Marinette and her boyfriend, and Adrien, who was happily smiling.
"Uh, Dude." Nino spoke up, "Your best friend is a little bit psycho and so is her boyfriend. You might need a new one."
"Nah." Adrien brushed off, "Princess only gets like this when she's super tired. It must be what happens with Lila. Mari never remembers when she sleep talks. The meds said they would make her drowsy, right?"
"Yes." Damian answered, "We got smoothies from the shop she goes to with Tsurugi-san. We were on our way back."
Adrien nodded his head in understanding, "So, when is the move?"
"Move?" Nino piped up.
"Is he moving away?" asked Alix.
"He talked to Mari's parents and convinced them to allow Mari to move in with his family, in the states." Adrien announced, nonchalantly, "Damian is over protective and his family is always making sure no one is stressed out."
"You make her sound like an object." Lila commented.
The model scoffed, "There's two overprotective people together."
"Marinette isn't overprotective." Alya declared.
"She doesn't lock her diary in a box that traps a thief's hands in it? She doesn't show anyone her designs and keeps a locker, in town, full of her things?" Adrien questioned, with a smile, " Perhaps, you never knew Mari at all, so-called ex-best friend. Mari could defend me for days because I did something wrong. When was the last time she defended any of you?"
'Defend?'
The Agreste heir glared at them, taking his stance next to the couple, "Don't you realize you are partially to blame for her leaving?"
"But Miss Bustier-" Rose began, uncomfortably.
"You're also the reason why Mari wasn't sleeping or eating!" Adrien shouted, pointing to Alya and Nino, "Tossing your siblings at her because it was convenient for you! Having them run up to her as you walk away, so she can't say no! Hell, you don't even talk anymore!"
"Why do you all go to her for help?" Adrien continued to shout, "She isn't the only artist in class! Are Alix and Nathaniel not good enough? Both Max and I have excellent grades, as well!"
Everyone looked down, never expecting the scolding. They had come to rely on Marinette so much, they hadn't realized the pressure they had put her under until now and it took Adrien to tell them.
"I'm okay." Marinette spoke up, hugging Adrien.
Damian swiftly scooped her up, "I'm taking her home. She doesn't need to be here, with them."
Adrien nodded, "I'll see you at dinner tomorrow." and with that, the couple was gone.
"Adrien." Nino called out.
"You guys pushed her so hard, she hadn't slept in almost a week." Adrien spoke softly, "It can cause neurological damage. You guys have been mean to her in school. She was just trying to meet you expectations; she was trying to be your friend."
"Wait, how long has Mari been dating that guy?" questioned Mylene, "Her parents wouldn't just let her move into a stranger's home."
"Three years." Adrien answered.
"What?" asked Alix.
Rose perked up, "What about her bullying Lila?"
The model rolled his eyes, "Mari never bullied her."
"Yes she did." Alya shouted, "Marinette wanted to date you!"
" Well, I asked her out and got rejected." Adrien announced, "She did admit that she liked me when Lila moved here, but she was getting over me. Marinette helped me get with my ex-girlfriend, Kagami, despite her feelings for me. By the time I asked her out, she was already with Damian. Lial has been lying to you and getting you to harass Mari."
"But....Why are you saying all of this now?" asked Nathaniel, getting increasingly frustrated.
"Oh, I told Alya and Nino years ago." he said, showing off his model smile, "They thought it was 'cute' that I was trying to defend Mari and be her 'knight in shining armor'. Doesn't matter now, though."
"What do you mean?" asked Kim, as people turned to look at the couple.
"Like I said before, her boyfriend is overprotective and Mari finds it cute. Her parents adore him. They think she's in good hands and so do I." Adrien replied, "Damian is known for not putting up with anyone's shit and breaking bones, if people get in his way. His mother raised him to believe that women were criminal masterminds, looking for the next big catch."
Lila unknowingly flinched.
The model smiled, "She taught him to fight and that anyone was an opponent. He is trained in several martial arts and banned from several competitions because he was trained since he could walk."
"I know Mari will always be protected and no one will ever hurt her again." He continued, glaring at them, "No more torn up homework. No more getting tripped in the halls. No more unnecessary work. I can guarantee that if Damian ever saw it happening to Mari, he wouldn't hold back. Bruce tells him he's too advanced and he could cause some serious damage to someone if he went all out. Damian wouldn't care and I would be cheering him on."
Adrien walked away leaving them stunned.
"Why didn't you tell us that Adrien told you Lila was a liar?" Questioned Ivan.
"Huh?" Nino answered, still in shock, "Uh, we...just thought he was...that Adrien wanted to help her. It was out of nowhere!"
"Why did you dump your siblings with Marinette?" Countered Nathaniel.
"She always helped before. She could be trusted-" Alya began.
"Trusted enough to look out for little kids, but not enough to be you friend?" Juleka pressed.
"It sounds like she was never given the chance to reject you...generous offer." Max countered.
Agitated, Alya shouted back, "What about your theatre's club backdrop?"
Everyone quickly turned against each other, fighting over who had pushed Marinette pass her limit. Who had pissed off Adrien? While they were busy arguing, Lila slipped away, tossing away her wig.
'Well, that school was a bust. Back to being Cerise.'

Bring Me Home Arc 2 Part 20: FINAL
So guess what I realized this morning. Today, November 13, 2023 is the one year anniversary of me posting my first DPxDC fic to tumblr. It was the original fill for this very fic. (Which you can find here.)
So I decided I just had to finish this arc and get it posted. This year has been amazing and so much fun. I've become a much better writer and joined a community that has brought me so much joy. I'm glad to be here and I'm glad so many of you like to read what I'm sharing.
I noticed I got a few new readers over the past week or so, so welcome to all of you! Hope you enjoy this early update!
In personal news, my nephew was born and he's adorable and I'll be meeting him tomorrow! (As soon as I'm done posting this, I'm off to make food for his mom.)
Story Summary: Tim and Danny are both neglected by parents who care more about their work than their families. They deal with this by spending too much time online and find each other playing MMORPGs. They keep up their friendship as Tim becomes Robin and Danny becomes Phantom and don't bother keeping secrets from each other.
Arc 1
Arc 2: Part 1, Previous
Word Count: 1.2k
-----
In the end, it ended up taking several hours for Danny, Sam, and Tucker to escape their families and converge on the park. In that time, Tim had called Bruce to let him know he’d be back in Gotham by tomorrow and finished most of his homework.
While he worked, Wulf and Bart were having an animated conversation in Esperanto.
Tim was pretty sure Wulf would be bringing Bart to the Ghost Zone for a tour sometime and started making plans to learn Esperanto himself and bribe Bart to get in on them.
Cassie was helping Conner sort through some of the music Sam had given him. Tim was jealous as he solved more banal trig questions. Why did school have to be so boring? He tapped his pencil on the paper in time to the beat of whatever music Conner had playing.
Tucker was the first to arrive. “Danny and Sam not here yet?” he asked as he plopped down next to Bart and Wulf.
“Nope. Haven’t heard from them, either,” said Tim. He opened his phone notifications again just to be sure, but there was nothing new.
Tucker shrugged and pulled out a stick of jerkey to munch on. “Not surprising. The Fentons will be all overprotective after the mayor was kidnapped by a ghost on live TV. And Sam’s parents are just as bad. Only they smother rather than check the weaponry.” He turned to greet Wulf in Esperanto.
An email came through on Tim’s phone and he groaned. “Our evening interview was canceled. No one wants to hear us try to defend Phantom anymore.”
Cassie cursed. “Course not. Bet the paper won’t publish our editorials either.”
Conner looked over, confused. “Won’t they? Clark works for the Daily Planet. They publish stuff like that all the time.”
Tim didn’t look up from his math as he answered, “That’s the difference between a big, Pulitzer winning publication and a small-town op-ed.”
Tucker sighed. “Well maybe someone will remember your interviews from this morning in a positive light.”
Bart rolled his eyes. “Come on, we can’t change it. So let’s move forward. Next step, make friends with more ghosts! Wulf says there’s a bunch of cool people in the Realms.”
“Realms?” asked Tim.
“It’s what he says the Ghost Zone is actually called. The Infinite Realms.”
“Huh. I’ll have to check JL databases, see if they have any information on them.”
Tucker asked something in Esperanto and Bart burst out laughing as Wulf looked on in confusion.
With Bart’s help, though, he rephrased until Wulf was able to reply. And then the three kept to Esperanto. Tim really had to find time to learn it.
Sam was the next to arrive. She grinned and sat down next to Conner. “How you liking the music?”
Conner grinned and showed her the sheets where he ranked the bands so far based on which songs he’d listened to. She then took over the speakers and searched for specific tracks to try and change his mind about some of the bands he liked the least.
Tim let his eyes close as his friends’ voices washed over him.
After some indeterminate time where he dozed between sleeping and awareness, a foot nudged his hip. Tim grumbled out what was supposed to be a, “What?” but was too mumbled to really be understood.
“Come on, Secrets. You can do better than that.”
Tim cracked an eye open to see Danny grinning down at him. He pushed himself up slightly and blinked heavily in the sunlight.
“Finally got away from your parents?” asked Tim.
Danny collapsed on the ground next to him. “Ugh, don’t remind me. They’re freaking out over everything that’s happened the last few days. Jazz and I are basically going to be on lock down until they feel confident the ghosts are gone.”
“Did you have to sneak out to get here?” asked Cassie.
Danny shook his head. “No, I told them I was going to find you guys to make sure you were all safe. You’re welcome to come back to ours tonight, by the way. Mom and Dad basically insisted on it.”
“What do you guys think?” asked Tim. “Spend one more night here at Danny’s and head out in the morning?”
Cassie sighed. “My mom’s already freaking out that I’ve been gone longer than planned. I should get back tonight.”
“I’ll stay,” offered Conner. “I’m your ride home, anyway.”
“Why don’t you come to my place, Conner,” offered Sam. “Your nails need a fresh coat after fighting today. And I need teach you about the different brands of makeup and what to look for in terms of cost, quality, and ethicality. Plus I can get you more music.”
Tim laughed when Conner looked to him. “Go for it. Have fun.”
Conner grinned. “Then yeah, let’s do it!”
Bart shrugged. “Wulf is going to go back to the Realms soon. I’ll head out after. Wally and Linda want me over for a family dinner tonight.”
“Well, looks like that’s it, then,” sighed Danny. “Been fun having other heroes around.”
Tim nudged his shoulder. “Join the Young Justice. You could join us and we'd help out whenever you wanted. Get you around people who actually appreciate what you do for them.”
But Danny was already shaking his head. “I have to stay here. And now Amity trusts heroes even less. I want to improve that, not make it worse.”
“Even if you don’t join,” declared Conner. “You’re not getting rid of us now.”
Bart nodded his agreement. “Yep. We’re gonna be stopping by all the time. You’re in the group chat.”
“Exactly,” agreed Tim. “And we’ll figure out ways to help you. Starting with how to minimize property damage. That seems to be the big thing people focus on. You can make shields, right? How big can you make them and how much power do they take?”
Danny smiled wryly. “Can’t say I’ve really tested it.”
Tim laughed. “Well, I know one thing we’re doing tonight. We’re going to go back to Nasty Burger—” Tim looked around at the whole group “—all of us. Then Cassie and Bart are going to go home. Danny and I, at least, are going to take a nap. Then we’re gonna test the current limits to Danny’s powers.”
Danny bumped their shoulders together. “You know, this is just like gaming with you all those years.”
“Yeah, well, it’s best to be thorough.”
“We’ve measured, like, his top speed and stuff,” said Tucker, pulling out a PDA. “Want to see what we’ve got so far?”
“Absolutely.” Tim took the device and looked through it. “You’ve a decent amount of information here. Maybe instead of taking a nap, I’ll help you organize it and come up with a testing plan.”
Conner flew over to him and pulled the PDA out of his hand. “Not after pulling an all-nighter you won’t. We’re going to get some food, then the two of you are going to sleep for at least four hours.”
“I’ll set Jazz on you, too,” threatened Sam. “Don’t think I won’t.”
Tim pouted as the device was given back to Tucker. And grumbled more when Conner picked him up and threw him over his shoulder.
“Come on, food time.”
“I am going to put kryptonite in your phone,” threatened Tim.
“Bingo!” shouted Cassie.
Danny laughed as he stood. “Does this mean I can join the next round?”
Tim scowled. “Traitors, all of you.”

And that's the end of this Arc! Arc 3 will pick up where the original fill did. (Only this time, Tim won't be the only DC character there to help Danny.)
I'd say something like I can't believe it's only been a year, but so much has happened to me in the last twelve months that it feels like a lifetime ago, to be honest. But it's been a good year and I'm glad this community has been part of it.
Please follow the subscription post if you want updates for when I start transferring this arc to AO3 or begin posting Arc 3.

Octavious sighed as he leaned back into his chair. He tapped his fingers against the table, inpatient. His arms were already getting antsy, moving around, opening and closing. He looked around the empty warehouse, the walls, floors, and ceiling all covered with mold and dust. The 2 door entrance was barely an entrance, as the left door was almost completely rusted off, making a shriek when he had to pry it open. The place was perfect for an overnight meeting with Martin to deliver him his cloaking device… if he were to show up on time.
He was already making a move to call Martin to tell him the meeting was off when there was a light passing by the window in the night, and he heard a car roll to a stop near the entrance. Within a few moments, Li and his guards sauntered into the room, and he took a seat on the other edge of the table.
“Good to see you, my friend.” He introduced, “I apologize for being late. Traffic, you know?”
Octavious was in no mood. He just wanted to get back and see you, and make sure you did your homework that he had assigned for you. And to tuck you into bed. One of his arms pulled out the device, which looked like a dash cam, and dropped it into his palm. “I’ve made it easy to control: the only thing is that the device will need to be manually operated. This button on the side turns it on, and, I’ve computed it to include various models and persons so that if you just need cover, then you don’t have to be invisible all the time.” He placed the device in the middle of the table, letting Li pick it up and inspect it.
“Thank you, my friend.” He looked back to Octavious, “By the way, were you still working on that ‘override’ project?”
Octavious raised a brow, and felt his arms start to stray. He pulled them back, “Yes, I have completed it. Why do you ask?”
Li shrugged a bit, putting the cloaking device in his pocket. “I’m planning a few heists in the next few weeks- it would help cause less frustrations in getting them set up.”
When Octavious didn’t answer, he added on, “A favor for a favor, then?”
This was taking too long. His arms were starting to become more and more impatient, reaching out and twitching. “No, that won’t be needed. Here,” he pulled out one of his chips, along with a tablet. He slid the chip over the table over to Li, and the table lit up.
“You may borrow it- maybe indefinitely depending on how many I am able to make. And don’t think about taking it, as I have all of them tracked.”
He placed the screen on the table, letting Martin look at every single one he had currently, most of them back at his base. He opened a side table from the GPS map, showing different uses and how it forms keys and cards and everything in between. His arms were whirring down at the tablet, but he ignored them, thinking it was just them being impatient about seeing you again.
“As you can see, depending on where and how you use it, it can serve a multitude of factors, not just opening doors, but creating system failures, hacking databases and-”
It was finally then that his arms started to do their little movements towards the tablet while he was talking with Li. Before he could make them retreat, he noticed what they were looking at. Almost all of the little red dots of the override chips were all at his base: except one, which was moving down different streets and alleys, much farther than his base. He picked up the tablet watching it move away from most of the other dots.
Li chuckled seeing Octavious be stumped. “I thought you were very overprotective of your projects, Doctor?”
He couldn’t understand. Was it a bug? In his technologies? Every genius has their flaws, he knew, but it wouldn’t make sense. He had built every single one of them differently, and had made sure there were no imperfections. But then that would mean someone had taken it and ran off with it. That was impossible, he reasoned, as the only person at the base right now is-
Oh. Oh, dear.
His arms, either reading his thoughts or realizing the same time he did, started to move around uncontrollably, writhing to get him out, to get to the base. No, he rationed, if they aren’t the ones who had taken it, then they would still be at the base safe and sound. If someone had come to steal the chips, they would’ve taken all of them.
When he stood up, pushing the chair all the way to the wall with the force, Li stood up as well. “I assume you must catch your runaway chip, then?”
Octavious was already climbing up to the wall, with the windows broken, breaking a few more so he could pass through. “Don’t you dare loose that chip, Li.” He called out, before he jumped away, moving in a frenzy to chase after you, ignoring whatever Li had said back.
---
When you escaped, you didn't really know where to go. His lair that he had was underneath a river, and while you thought it would be a nightmare to get out of, you guessed the door that you had found from that corridor was the easiest way out since it led you all the way up to some alleyway. You realized that, yes, you probably were under the Hudson River because you could see it running downstream when you had reached the top.
However, that didn’t matter to you. You hadn’t seen the moon in a long while, and it was a full one. Just your luck. You knew that Octavious would be busy with whatever he was doing in his lab, so you weren’t worried about him finding out until the early hours of the morning.
You were not lucky, however, in knowing where to go. You didn’t really know the area around the river well, especially in the dark, where you couldn’t see anything. Hiding in the alleys and running through the abandoned buildings didn’t help either.
There was no one around, and while you had thought about it, calling out for help probably wouldn’t do you any good. So, instead, you kept going, hoping that you could find an exit to the dark labyrinth soon.
As the moon got higher, and you could no longer hear the river run, you had slowed your pace, speed walking down streets and roads. Your feet hurt by now, but you trudged on, hoping to find someone eventually.
While walking, you pulled the rectangular chip from your pocket. It looked useless, besides that one hole in the wall. It was strange, because you never saw that hole in the wall before. You had scoured up and down that apartment, especially the doors, trying to find a way out. But there was nothing, at least when you looked. Looking at it more closely, the chips weren’t in the same spot as they were. In fact, as you moved around more, they kept changing, morphing into different things. Some looked like actual keys, others motherboards, and some just kept changing geometric shapes. It was constant, but subtle.
You had never noticed that. You were so busy watching them change shape and morph that you almost didn’t hear it. You turned your head, listening to some clanking noise. It was almost rhythmic if it didn’t sound frantic, almost like a car or truck. Maybe it was someone coming to pick something up from one of the buildings! You could get help from them, you thought.
You turned around, ignoring how your feet hurt, and ran towards the noise. You shoved the chip back into your pocket, and ran down the side of the building. The clanking noise was getting louder and closer, but it sounded… strange. Not like a truck or car kind of noise, where the shocks were holding large amounts of cargo, but more like a slamming of a metal pipe on the ground. You slowed your stop at the edge of the building, and peeked your head out, wondering what it was.
To your horror, just a few dozens of meters away, Otto was charging at you. You turned back, and started to run away, really praying that someone would find you now.
“_____!!” You heard him screech, which made you run even faster. You felt the ground shaking by now, and you could hear him push anything that was in his way away. “Get back here, NOW!!”
You kept running, hoping to get the hell away from him. You knew he was getting closer, and you could hear his arms becoming more hectic with every step they took. It made you run as fast as you could, hoping to outrun him, or to run into someone else. However, your luck ran out that night as you felt something slam into your side, and lift you up high into the air.
Catching your breath, you looked down and saw Otto, and he looked furious. The arm around your waist squeezed, making you yelp in pain. You went to say something, but he interrupted you, “Save it. For. Later.” He talked in between moving back towards the base, moving in large swift jumps of his 3 other arms.
While being held, he pulled you close to him, and while you thought he was going to hug you or slap you, instead he reached inside of your pocket and pulled out the rectangular chip that you had. “Hey, don’t-” you reached one of your hands out, trying to grab it from him, but he slapped your hand away.
“Save. It. And this-” he held up the chip, before putting it in his pocket, “Does not belong to you. You stole it.”
You rolled your eyes at that. “I did not-”
Otto stopped suddenly, making you jolt from being held. You grabbed onto the arm tightly, afraid of being dropped. He brought you very close to his face. “What part of save it do you not understand?” He gritted out. He was seething. You could see his eyes shake with anger, he was almost spitting out every word he said.
You decided that you had done enough, and you remained quiet. When you said nothing, he turned back to the road and continued going back to the base. For a short while, it was quiet. At least my feet aren’t hurting that much anymore.
Embarrassingly, you didn’t make it that far from the base based on how short the trip was back. This time, however, he brought you to a new entrance, one you didn’t even know was there. It was through a building, and then through a large pipe in the center of it. While you had thought it was the stupidest entrance ever, the multiple traps, cameras and security measures that he easily moved around or accessed proved it was not an easy way to get in. When he finally reached the bottom of the pipe, it brought you to a room that looked similarly to his lab. Except, it almost looked more evil. It was way bigger, and had tanks and monitors. Everything looked evil.
He walked (still using his arms) over to a large sphere, that looked like one of those Plasma balls you saw online. However, at the top, it had a little latch. He opened the latch, and unceremoniously dropped you in. You slid down the glass onto the floor of it, and you jumped to your feet just as he shut it and locked it. Looking around, it was literally just a fishbowl with a hole in the back.
You turned back to Otto, who was staring at you through the glass. He pressed his hand up against it, at your eye level.
“I am extremely upset with you.” He stated as he visibly tried to calm himself down. His voice sounded around the glass, like an echo. It really was like a fishbowl. “I don’t know or understand why you would run off like that- I know you are scared and frightened, but that is no way to treat your father.”
He had never referred to himself as such before. It took you by surprise, seeing him so… emotional. He started to walk away, even while you tried to say something, to say you were sorry, that you would never run away again. But he just turned around, and said, “I’ll see you in the morning. Think about your actions. We’ll have a talk in the morning.”
He walked out, and the lights turned off, leaving you sobbing in the darkness, alone and afraid.

I’d love to hear some library stories!
Okay friends here is my support your local public library manifesto:
I have worked in a public library for a little over a year now, and I worked in an academic library for a year and a half. They’re two different beasts, and I love both, but public libraries will always have a special place in my heart.
Lately, as I’m sure you know, public libraries in the US have been under attack by people who really don’t understand public libraries and all that their employees do.
So, here are some of the things that I’ve done in my year of public library work that people outside of it might not think of:
1. I’ve taught several older adults how to text on their iPhone for the first time, and how to use their smart phones generally.
2. I led teens through a library orientation to show them all we have to offer (which is pretty important when we regularly have 50-60 teens hanging out at my branch after school).
3. I’ve helped people over chat reference locate information and obituaries for their relatives. This involved looking through old newspapers and databases — it was really cool and the patrons are always extremely thankful!!
4. I helped a woman locate her many-greats grandfather’s civil war records using our local history collection.
5. I’ve printed countless tax forms for people and made appointments for them to get their taxes done at the library for free.
6. I’ve developed relationships with the local community college and a local university to get more college students to use the public library and to get them out into their community. (Let me brag here: this is in the strategic plan to be completed by fiscal year 2026, and I, a 23 year old library associate, have already been doing this, teehee)
7. I set up 4 all-ages displays and 2 adult displays this year alone, and I have 2 more I’m setting up in September.
8. I’ve helped kids locate materials for homework in books and using our online resources.
9. I’ve helped with our branch’s Lunch at the Library program, which feeds any kid up to age 18 for free every weekday during the summer.
10. I’ve helped people young and old with resumes, job applications, and helped them find career readiness and test prep materials countless times.
Libraries are SO much more than just books!!!! We have online resources, puzzles, board games, cameras, fishing poles, cake pans, and so much more!! We have programming for ALL ages! I specifically program for 20s-30s! Check us out!!!!! And don’t forget: public libraries are some of the last spaces that you can exist in without having to spend money. They need to be protected, appreciated, and most of all VISITED!!!
Go get a library card and check us out!!!!!!

Thea's Quest ~ Ch. 7
Chapter 7: Targets
Summary: Thea and Kaldur spend the day learning about computers, help Superboy pick a name, and save two countries from war.
Warnings: canon typical violence, blood and injuries

Thea was glad to have a day off. She needed to catch up on some of Diana’s homework and fill out a few mission reports – and of course some rest was always appreciated. But first, she had to meet Kaldur in the mission room. A week or so prior, the team had found out that Thea didn’t know how to use technology, given its habit of attracting monsters. With the help of her magical pendant she wasn’t at as much risk anymore, but she still didn’t really know how to approach electronics. Kaldur had offered to try to teach her some things on their days off, so that was where she was headed.
“Hey!” Thea called to the Atlantean as she walked into the mission room.
“Good morning, Thea.” Kaldur replied.
The two got to work, Kaldur first showing Thea simply how to gesture in order to turn the screen on.
“I’ve seen so much stuff that is unexplainable by science, and yet this feels so magical to me.” Thea said to Kaldur as she practiced.
He had opened his mouth to reply when their comms went off.
“Aqualad.” Kaldur reported.
“Red Arrow.” Came the voice on the other end.
Thea frowned. She wasn’t a fan. Red Arrow was aggressive, which she could look past, but his general distaste and distrust of her and her friends – especially Artemis – rubbed her the wrong way. She just felt like something was off about him.
“I need access to the Justice League's database and the exact height of the League of Shadows assassin known as Cheshire.” Red Arrow said.
Kaldur moved over in front of Thea to pull up the necessary information.
“Checking. Cheshire is 1.67 meters.” Kaldur said.
“Um…” Red Arrow trailed off.
Thea rolled her eyes.
“She’s 5 foot 6.” She clarified.
“And exceptionally dangerous. Do you require backup?” Kaldur asked.
As much as she didn’t like Red Arrow, Thea respected Kaldur’s kindness toward his friend.
“Please. The last thing I need is the Junior Justice League.” Red Arrow rejected.
“Just our computer.” Kaldur said sassily.
Thea couldn’t help but chuckle.
“Good luck, my friend. Aqualad out.”
~~~
After their call with Red Arrow, M’gann walked through the mission room. Thea and Aqualad followed her to the hangar to wish her and Superboy a good first day of class.
“Ready for school? I made our lunches.” M’gann said as she flew toward Superboy.
“The first day of the scholastic season carries great cultural resonance. We want to wish you both well.” Martian Manhunter said as he, Red Tornado, Kaldur, and Thea approached.
“Guess it's not a Kryptonian thing.” Superboy said sadly.
Thea felt a wave of anger at Big Boy Blue. The way Superman ignored his clone reminded her of the ways the gods ignored their unclaimed children.
Powerful people need to learn how to parent. She thought with a frown.
“Wait, Thea, why aren’t you going to school?” M’gann asked.
Thea’s eyes widened in surprise.
“Oh, uh, I don’t go to school.” She said, unsure how to answer the question.
“What do you mean?” M’gann asked. “Surely you care about your education.” She continued.
“No, of course.” Thea said.
“Just, the last time I was in school was five years ago, and a harpy attacked one of my classmates.” She explained.
Everyone looked at her with some amount of confusion of concern.
“He was fine!” She assured.
“But anyway. I’m – uh – I’m homeschooled.” Thea said.
“You may wish to change before you depart.” Kaldur mentioned to M’gann, changing the topic.
“Ah! I spent hours choosing this outfit. What do you think?” M’gann said as she spun around, her clothes transforming out of her hero outfit and into a skirt and blouse.
“Can M'gann M'orzz pass as an Earth girl now?” She asked.
“Well…” Kaldur trailed off, unsure how to break the news.
Thea pursed her lips, holding in a giggle.
“Just kidding!” M’gann laughed.
“Meet Megan Morse.” She said, her skin changing from green to caucasian.
“What's your new name?” She asked Superboy.
“My what?” He asked.
“I chose the name John Jones for myself. And suggested John Smith for Red Tornado. You could be a John too.” Martian Manhunter suggested.
“Pass.”
M’gann – or Megan – put her hands on Superboy’s arm.
“Conner's always been my favorite name.” She said.
Superboy shrugged ambivalently, accepting the title.
Thea thought back to her most familiar Connor: Connor Stoll. Half of the set of twins who consistently lovingly made her life at camp difficult as hell.
“A last name will also be required.” Kaldur said.
“Perhaps Kent?” Martian Manhunter suggested.
“Oh, in memory of Dr. Fate, the late Kent Nelson.” Megan said.
“Of… course.” He replied.
Thea sensed something off and looked over at Kaldur. She tilted her head slightly to indicate her question. The boy winked at her. Thea’s eyebrows raised at the implication. Superman’s last name is Kent; that’s knowledge to file away for later.
“Okay, sure. I guess it'd be an honor or something.” Superboy, now Connor, agreed.
“Well, Conner Kent, time to change your shirt.” Megan said.
Connor looked down at his shirt, then back at her, confused.
“You don't wanna reveal your identity.” She explained, tapping his chest.
Connor reached over his shoulder and pulled off his shirt. Thea’s eyes widened. She may not like the boy romantically, but he was by no means an unattractive man.
“Ugh, will this work?” He asked, pulling the shirt inside out.
Megan looked like a deer in headlights.
“Works for me.” She all but drooled.
Thea put a hand around her mouth to stop herself from laughing, or at least hide her gleeful grin. Kalur glanced at her and chuckled.
“Wait, shouldn't I be Conner Nelson?” Thea heard Connor ask as he and Megan walked away.
“They grow up so fast.” Manhunter said fondly.
~~~
Kaldur and Thea took some time the rest of the morning to do some work, and make lunch. Thea really liked spending time with Kaldur. It reminded her of her early days at camp, meeting and getting to know Luke, Annabeth, and Grover – back when it all felt so simple.
Later, they returned to the mission room. Thea was slowly but surely getting the hang of using the cave’s computer, but she could always use more practice.
Again, their comms went off.
“It’s me. I may possibly be in over my head.” Red Arrow said.
After a brief conversation to plan, the call ended.
“You go ahead.” Thea said as soon as Red Arrow hung up.
“You’re not coming?” Kaldur asked, seeming confused.
“He doesn’t like me.” Thea stated bluntly. “The whole situation will be easier if I’m not there. He’s not upset by my presence and you don’t have to worry about the two of us not getting along.”
Kaldur paused, thinking over her words.
“You do not need to come if you really do not want to.” He began. “But I think we will need your help. As… abrasive as he can be, he does not hate you, and I know that his distrust is misplaced. I will not force it, but I would like you to come with me.” Kaldur said.
Thea’s posture softened.
“Okay.” She said. “But only if you don’t leave me alone with him.” She commanded.
“Deal.” Kaldur said with a smile.
~~~
Kaldur and Thea arrived in Taipei covertly. Zeta tubes meant no TSA, but Thea didn’t want to risk openly carrying her sword into a politically tense situation, so she stuck with her dagger hidden under her jacket. The two were standing in front of a podium where Red Arrow, along with Lex Luthor and the representatives from North and South Rhelasia were.
Thea felt a presence behind her.
“Get ready.” She whispered to Kaldur.
He turned around to face the disguised woman as Thea shifted over slightly, getting out of the way while making sure to watch Kaldur’s back.
“That is far enough, Cheshire.” He said.
The assailant acted innocent for only a second, before pushing a button on the tea cart she was pushing and leaping away. Kaldur pulled the water from the cups on the podium, forming a wall of water just as Red Arrow shot an arrow, setting off the bomb. Fortunately, Kaldur’s wall held, but the exertion it took was obvious. As soon as the explosion cleared, Kaldur dropped the barrier.
“It’s over, Cheshire.” Somebody said.
“You would think so.” She replied coyly.
Thea’s eyes narrowed. A helicopter carrying a group of assassins piloted next to the building.
“Take Sportsmaster. Cheshire’s mine.” Red Arrow commanded Kaldur.
“Thea–” Kaldur started.
“Protect the ambassadors?” She said, already pulling out her dagger to engage the closest Shadow.
“Yes.” He acknowledged, focusing his attention on Sportsmaster.
Thea moved quickly, focusing on the Shadows and making sure they couldn’t get too close to the ambassadors. She only had her dagger, and the Shadows were trained in a different fighting style, but her years of sword practice and combat training made her a formidable opponent. The whole time, Thea was careful. Monsters could be killed and would eventually come back – but these were mortals, and she didn’t want to murder anyone.
Thea ducked a blow from the Shadow in front of her, then kicked their leg out from under them. They fell and hit their head on the ground. Quickly another Shadow engaged her. They circled each other, each landing hits and defending against the others’ attacks. Oddly, this Shadow seemed to be pushing Thea away from the ambassadors rather than getting closer to them himself. Thea glanced over, trying to find Lex Luthor as well as her friends. The slight moment of distraction was enough for the Shadow to push Thea outside the building. As soon as her foot crossed over the threshold, the soldier spun around, heading back to the ambassadors.
“Vlakas!” She swore, realizing the trick.
~~~
Before she had the chance to run back inside, though, a sudden searing pain cut through her shoulder. She grabbed the area, pulling her hand away to see blood coming from a slice – almost like that of a small arrow. Something on the ground caught her eye and she kneeled to find a feather. She picked it up. It was a grayish color, but when it caught the sun it gleamed gold, and when she turned it to the side, it was razor sharp.
“Oh, Styx.”
It was as if her realization summoned the flock. Spinning on her heel, Thea spotted the treeline and ran for cover. It wasn’t great help though – Stymphalian birds are incredibly dangerous monsters. The mortals she ran past looked confused, but Thea paid them no mind, certain that the Mist would do its work. Thea tried not to be slowed down by the birds, even as their feathers slashed cuts in her skin.
“One monster is bad enough, but a whole swarm? Really?” She muttered under her breath as she finally reached the trees.
Of course, it didn’t stop the birds from following her, but at least she wasn’t as obvious a target, and they couldn’t shoot their feathers from above.
“Okay, Thea. Think.” She said to herself.
“Defeating the Stymphalian birds was one of Hercules’ tasks. But he used brass bells from Athena – what am I supposed to do?” The girl thought out loud.
It was too little, too late. Some of the birds had found her. There weren't as many as before, but that hardly mattered. Pulling out her dagger, Thea really wished she had her sword. One of the birds flew close – it looked like a pigeon, but bigger, and stronger – and Thea swung at it. She knocked it aside before its bronze beak could grab her, but it was only stunned for a moment. It flew back toward her, gaining speed. A pigeon shouldn’t be as menacing as a peregrine falcon, but Thea was very afraid.
This time, she had a better idea of what she was up against, and her aim held true. Her dagger sliced through the bird, turning it to golden ashes, though not before its feathers cut open new wounds on her hand.
A much worse pain shot through her abdomen. Thea looked down to find one of the other birds pecking, working its way through the skin of her stomach. She yelled, shoving forward her dagger with her injured hand, but another bird intercepted her, sending the dagger flying a few feet away.
If she made it out now, she would survive – the injuries weren’t too severe. But she was defenseless against the monsters, and she knew that without some loud noise to stop them, they would strip her to the bones.
Suddenly, a resonant boom sounded from inside the building, then a pause before more loud bangs. The lives of the ambassadors crossed her mind, but regardless, she had never been so grateful to hear a bomb and gunshots.
A few of the birds startled, and went flying away. The other, still cutting up Thea’s flesh, stayed for a moment. The adrenaline Thea got from looking down at the wound gave her the energy to kick the bird away and scream. Fortunately, it was enough for the creature to fly away after its family.
Thea slumped against a tree. From where she lay, she could see into the building, though her vision was gradually blurring. Having not prepared for a monster attack, she didn’t have her typical supplies on her. Thea pulled off her partially shredded shirt, leaving her in her sports bra, and balled it up to put pressure on her jagged wound. Her energy was draining, and nectar and ambrosia would have to wait until after Kaldur and Red Arrow found her – if they even would.
“What a way to go.” She muttered to herself in Greek, closing her eyes from the pain but trying to stay awake.
~~~
Fortunately for the young heroes, the guns Thea had heard did not maim the ambassadors, but rather an attacking Shadow. Sportsmaster and Cheshire had disappeared, but the treaty had been signed.
“I can't believe we just did a solid for Lex Luthor.” Red Arrow complained as he and Aqualad walked through the building.
“Not for Luthor, for peace.” Kaldur said, looking around for Thea and concluding that she must be outside.
“Beyond that, if Ra's and the League of Shadows wanted to sabotage the Summit, the signing of the treaty renders their contract moot. It is over.” He assured.
“Is it?” Red Arrow questioned as they stepped outside.
“I heard what Sportsmaster said. Do you really think there's a mole on your team feeding him intel?”
“I cannot rule out the possibility.” Kaldur said diplomatically.
“I will investigate quietly.” He said.
“Not tell them?” Red Arrow asked, surprised.
“I do not want the unit unraveling over baseless suspicions. And if there is a mole, I have no wish to tip him or her off.” Kaldur explained.
“Good luck with that.” Red Arrow said with a salute, turning to walk away.
“One moment, my friend.” Kaldur said.
“Tonight, you could have called Green Arrow for help or the Justice League. Instead, your first instinct was to call the Cave.” He observed.
Red Arrow paused.
“You're right. The team deserves… has my respect.” Red Arrow admitted.
“I'm still getting used to this solo act stuff. But if you need me, I'll be there.” He said kindly, moving to shake Kaldur’s hand.
The boys stepped away from each other. Red Arrow stopped suddenly, furrowing his eyebrows, looking off past the fountain. Without saying anything to Kaldur, he broke into a run toward the treeline.
“Arrow?” Kaldur called after him, but the hero was too distracted and said nothing.
Kaldur, confused, followed after him.
~~~
Thea had remained awake, but was afraid to try to get up due to the injury in her side. She saw Kaldur and Red Arrow walking out of the building, but her voice was strained and she couldn’t yell to get their attention. As much as she had her issues with the man, when Red Arrow looked over in her direction, she was relieved.
He ran up to her, having spotted her before Kaldur. When he reached her he immediately scanned her body, seeing cuts across her arms and legs as well as whatever injury she was hiding with her shirt.
“Holy shit, what happened?” He asked, kneeling next to her, lifting up her makeshift compress to view her injury before pushing it back down with more pressure.
Thea gasped at the sting.
“Did a Shadow do this to you?” He asked, concerned and confused.
She shook her head.
“Stymphalian birds.” She croaked.
“What?” The boy asked.
Thea smiled a little bit.
“Greek monsters – they’re like scary, flesh-eating pigeons.” She explained.
“Jesus.” Red Arrow muttered under his breath.
“Yeah.” The girl chuckled, moving to prop her arms behind her and pull herself up.
“Oh, hell no.” Red Arrow said, pushing her back down.
Kaldur came jogging up behind Red Arrow. His eyes widened with guilt and concern as he saw Thea in her condition.
“Thea…” He trailed off.
“It’s okay. I’ll be fine.” The girl attempted to reassure though neither boy seemed convinced.
“We need to get you to the med bay.” Kaldur said, putting himself in leader mode to mitigate his distress.
“That’d be great.” Thea said, clenching her teeth as she shifted against the tree.
“I’ll help.” Red Arrow said, leaving no room for argument.
The boys nodded at each other, each moving down to grab Thea under her shoulders.
They pulled her up, Red Arrow keeping pressure on her wound.
“Wait!” Thea said before they could start moving.
“My dagger, it’s right over there.” She said, pointing a little ways away.
Red Arrow shouldered all of Thea’s weight, and nodded at Kaldur who stepped away to pick up the girl’s weapon.
“Thank you.” Thea said, reaching out to grab it.
“I can hold onto it for now, let’s just get you back to the cave.”
With Red Arrow and Kaldur both supporting her, the three young heroes hobbled back to the zeta tube.
“This is where I leave you. At least, assuming you’ve got it from here. If you need me, I can stay.” Red Arrow said.
“We’ll manage.” Kaldur told him and Thea confirmed with a nod.
“Arrow!” She called as the archer began to walk away.
“Thank you.” She said sincerely.
The boy smiled.
“You’re welcome.” He said.
“And, Thea? You can call me Roy.”
~~~
Kaldur had carried Thea to the med bay in the cave, helped her dress the wound in her side, and after some discussion, even got her to sit down on a gurney. The girl protested, but after seeing the worry in Kaldur’s eyes, she agreed.
“I got what you asked for.” Kaldur said as he walked back into the room, carrying Thea’s satchel.
“Thank you.” She smiled, reaching into the bag to pull out a small flask and a ziplock with small, yellow cubes.
Grabbing a piece of ambrosia, Thea took a bite. Closing her eyes, she savored the taste of her dad’s homemade sourdough. It had been a long time since she had seen – or had wanted to see – her father, but the taste never failed to make her feel at home.
Kaldur smiled at the peaceful look on Thea’s face before getting up to grab some disinfectant and cloth to clean the cuts on her arms and legs. Thea swallowed her bite and opened her eyes to watch Kaldur. In some ways, it reminded her of times she got stuck in the Apollo cabin with injuries. Kaldur’s gentleness, though, made the moment far more tranquil.
Kaldur held Thea’s wrist gently as he wiped the antiseptic over the cuts on her arm. He had a small frown on his face as he worked. Thea knew that look.
“I’m okay, Kaldur.” She murmured softly, looking at her injuries, not meeting his eyes.
Kaldur sighed gently.
“I know that you will recover. But I am still upset to see you injured, especially from an unsanctioned mission I convinced you to go on.” He mutters, a hint of self-loathing seeping into his tone. Thea grabbed his wrist gently, halting his movements. She looked up at him.
“It isn’t your fault, Kaldur. My injuries have nothing to do with the mission. This is just a… occupational hazard, I guess. Courtesy of being a demigod. I’m fine.” She insisted quietly.
Kaldur was unconvinced.
“You should have called for help. We would have helped. I…” He trailed off, unable to articulate his thoughts.
Thea sighed gently.
“I know you would have helped me. Of course you would have.” Thea reassured. “I just… I was being stupid. I forgot that I had comms in. I’m still… I’m still not used to this whole ‘having back up’ thing.” She chuckled weakly. “Usually when you get cornered by a monster… you’re on your own.” She said sadly.
Kaldur paused, face softening at her words. Thea let go of his wrist and he resumed cleaning her cuts, mulling over his next words.
“I understand that. It is… quite the transition. Learning how to work with a team.” He acknowledged softly. “But you’re not on your own.” He concluded, voice gentle but firm.
Thea smiled up at him, letting him maneuver her arm to reach her scrapes and cuts.
“No. Not anymore.” She agreed.
Spoon (twice!) - from The Secret Portal Part Two (Lexi POV)
“Oh, shoot, I forgot my planner.” I turned to see it still lying on the floor. I flicked my wrist slightly to teleport it in my hand. “You brought a planner to breakfast?” Tyler asked as he drank his orange juice. “It’s just how I manage my life,” I said. I opened it up on the table to show them the January schedule. “Wow, that’s really pretty,” said Carla. “I don’t need a planner, given my powers.” “Aw, yeah, I wish I could just stop time at my leisure,” I said as I closed the planner again. “I have a planner,” said Tyler. “It’s called here.” He pointed to his head. “Medina has one like yours, but it’s a little boring.” “One, you need to write things down in case you forget,” said Gabriel, pointing at Tyler with his spoon. “Two, I don’t see why a planner needs color.” “To organize different activities,” I answered. “Hm. Well, I guess mine is just schoolwork and my job.” “You have a job?” I asked, leaning forward. Gabriel nodded. “Construction job—perfect for terrakinetics. After school on the weekdays, I walk about fifteen minutes to a site—” “Wait, you live here full time?” I asked. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to interrupt.” “You’re fine, I don’t care. Yes, I live here full time.” I chose not to inquire any further, even though Gabriel didn’t seem that bothered by it. “After school, I do the homework that I need to get done, then I help the docs out.” “What do they need help with?” “Various things. Um, right now we’re sorting through the multiverse database to see if we can find Rosalinda.” “Oh, yes, that’s right.” “G,” Carla whispered. “I’m fine, Carla,” I said. “But thanks. It’s actually really cool that Gills is helping.” “Gills?” Gabriel sighed then continued eating. “You really have been spending way too much time with Stafford.” “When are you gonna accept it’s an actual genius nickname?” Tyler asked. “Then why don’t you use it?” “It’s too silly for you.” “Do you not like the nickname?” I asked. “We can stop using it.” “Unfortunately, Nakashima is right,” Gabriel muttered, spinning his cereal around with his spoon. “It’s a pretty clever nickname. It’s so stupid, it almost works.”
It's Gills because his initials are GLZ (surname not included)
Energy - from The Secret Portal Part One
William put down his tablet and rubbed his eyes beneath his glasses. He’d been working so late that it was now early. It was so quiet he could hear the snakefly behind him violently flapping its wings. He sighed, then reread the last paragraph he’d written: Replicating the negative energy density found in a chronokinetic’s rifts is no easy task. The level needed to connect one time to another is far greater than a Level-7 teleporter, but nowhere near the level in the portal that connects our reality to Ceteri, nor even a dimensiokinetic. If chronokinetics were less seldom born, perhaps this task would be accessible. William glanced at the chemicals bubbling in the flask on the table before him. As there hadn’t been a documented chronokinetic in a century, it was nearly impossible to replicate their powers considering the amount of negative pressure needed. He would have to work with what he had: a Level-7 teleporter’s DNA—not common, but much more so than a chronokinetic. Jumping through space required significantly less negative energy density than time jumping, so trying to get it up to what he desired was no easy feat.
Study - from The Secret Portal Part One (Ash POV)
I'm probably gonna change the "in a century" thing. Not sure what I'm gonna do but it feels wrong.
“Telepathy is an exception to the classification of powers. It and shapeshifting are the only two recorded to not have their sub-powers build off each other, but rather have them separate.” “Why are there so few sub-powers?” I prodded. “The mind doesn’t have a limit, therefore telepathy shouldn’t, either, right?” Carla waved her hand side-to-side as if to say eh, kinda. Aloud, she answered, “It’s been said that there have been cases of telepaths with more advanced powers, but there has only been one recorded case. Though some conspiracy theorists say there were more, but weren’t recorded, and that they went into hiding, locked themselves away, or maybe went insane.” “Insane?” I repeated. Carla fiddled with the ring hanging from the chain around her neck. “The mind can only stretch so far. If advanced telepaths did—or even do—exist, there would be no way they could function. Their minds aren’t able to communicate the information that they can comprehend. They end up lost in their own thoughts, unable to reach out to another being.” I fell silent. “Carla’s in an online holographic course in Telepathic Theory,” George said, breaking the silence. “All of that is just theory. Scientists who study the telepathic mind made a list of potential powers.” “Can powers develop?” I asked. “Of course,” said Carla. “Most Alii, in general, start at a lower Level, usually a Level-1, and most become more powerful. It depends on the person.” “So, you’re saying I have the potential to be a powerful telepath?” Carla laughed. “No, the odds are you’ll be able to read minds and that’s it. Maybe one sub-power.” “Oh.” My shoulders dropped. “Okay.”
Listen - from The Secret Portal Part One (Kelsey POV)
“Kelsey!” I heard a faint voice say. “Kelsey!” I opened my eyes, lifting my head against the strong wind. A small figure walked toward me, kneeling down beside me. “Kelsey, look at me,” Maddie said, grabbing my hands. Her long hair whipped around her body, out to me. Tears streamed down my cheeks as I clasped her hand. My neck was ticking uncontrollably, preventing me from meeting her eyes. “It’s gonna be okay,” she said, pulling me forward into a hug. I embraced her, shaking, twitching, sobbing. “Kelsey, listen. Remember yesterday when this happened? You made the mansion toxic. Remember?” I nodded. “I don’t want that in my house. But you need to get rid of this… weird darkness stuff instead of just making it explode. Can you do that?” I shook my head. “Just focus on me, ‘kay? Now, can you breathe? Slowly?” I did, inhaling and exhaling. “I think you can make this black smoke go away if you imagine sucking it all up. Or maybe it just needs to disappear. Can you do that? Imagine it. Maybe it’ll work.” I closed my eyes, imagining the darkness fading away until it disappeared. I imagined the air in the room was still at breathable levels. That the smoke nor wind didn’t affect anything around it. The wind stopped. The darkness went away. Still in Maddie’s arms, I opened my eyes. The room looked untouched.
Pretty sure I've shared that last excerpt before but I like it
