Back in the early 2000s, the Wicked OBC soundtrack came out, and I devoured it. Wicked immediately became part of my personality. I remember sitting in pre-algebra, reading and re-reading the McGuire book, listening to the soundtrack so often that even now, several decades later, I can breathe in time with the music. And then, as a birthday gift, my family took me to see the touring production. I was so excited. I was so jazzed. It was the fulfillment of every Broadway-loving Midwestern teen's dreams, to finally---finally---see the musical she has been pining for since she grabbed the soundtrack off the livejournal swap.

............shortly thereafter, I walked out of that production with my love of Wicked stone dead.

At the time, I chalked it up to the difference between imagination (no budget/labor/time constraints; physics is optional) and reality (physics exist; so does accounting). However, it's now been almost 20 years, they can do some real nifty stuff with CGI, so I can say with confidence...the version I came up with in my bedroom as a bored teen remains better.

Thinking about how we always call this "the confession scene" yet the script only calls his expression of self-doubt a Confession, but his expression of love a Declaration. And what a difference that makes - whatever baggage makes us unconsciously associate coming out with an admission of guilt is not the story's; queer love, Supernatural says, is joy and peace and the deepest Truth that saves us from Death.

To quote Mary Cappello, "Queer memoirs should refuse to confess. There is nothing to confess. As a lapsed Catholic, I try daily at least to exit the confessional if I cannot burn it to the ground. So the memoir poses very important questions and narrative challenges to me as a lesbian narrator: Is it possible to narrate sexuality, especially when that sexuality is a prohibited one, without reproducing a discourse of disclosure, causality, or defensiveness against pathologization?"

Cas may have "never found an answer" until overcoming doubt, but Berens did: we don't confess our truth like it's in fact the point of shame we've been led to believe ("the same way our enemies see you," anyone?) but declare it to find peace in ourselves. And everyone who knows that, sees it: through self-love we make our own Garden.

Using “I can’t, I tried” and “we just sit around and talk about how great having innate magic is all day” as proof positive Jace is like a privileged and nepo baby coded drives me up the wall bc it’s like the text on itself and the paratext are telling two different stories and vaguely hinting he might’ve had an easy life through like 2 sentences even thought we also know he’s acting in junior year under duress at all times is like! Idk how to tell you but that’s not enough text to know anything! In fact the text itself is even less of an argument in your favor this is purely a paralanguage conversation

i saw a post about another media i wasnt familiar with (i think it was in stars and time?) talking about the group's dynamic as like. it's found family but in a way that specifically rejects the traditional family roles- ie there doesn't have to be a "mom" and a "child" or any other named role for individual people, just their closeness is enough on its own to make them family. and i think that's how i feel about the rockafire a bit! like tbf i do think mitzi has a sibling-like relationship w beach bear and dook but that's kinda the only named relationship i feel even a bit strongly about lol. i feel like i can't think of any rae character without also thinking of how i like their dynamic with at least one other character, the way each character interacts with the others strengthens their own personality and i think thats super cool. i love those guys
