I’m back on my demi/ace Arthur shit so here’s some things that have been floating around in my head for a few days

Arthur only ever wore shirts to bed while he was under love spells and after he got married.

He’s a hopeless romantic but actively avoids anyone who’s interested in him because, y’know, expectations suck.

He walked around shirtless or pantsless or completely naked while bathing or just while he was in his chambers multiple times when it was only him and Merlin, or whenever there was no expectation for it to mean anything else.

He only started liking Gwen when he got to know her more and when she started acting like a person more than a servant around him. The Ealdor episode springs to mind, then that episode where he faked his identity in a tournament. I’m sure there’s others, but I can’t remember them right now.

Anytime he acts sexually, flirting or anything along those lines, with anyone he’s not familiar with it’s always performative. When he met Merlin the whole time he was watched by the never seen again noble sons he was hanging out with. (I’ll speculate who they were again another day, that’s not the point)

He’s got no issues with proximity, clearly with how he acts around the knights with their affection, but as soon as the context changes he gets flustered and awkward.

Anyway. Do whatever you want with that information.

Okay, if you were asked who are in Merlin BBC & Voltron that you can see based on canon that are gay/bi/pan/demi, which characters are they? Why?

What a fun ask I'm totally not doing to procastinate on cooking... XD

BBC Merlin

Arthur Pendragon is, in my head, demiromantic and bisexual... It sort of depends on the circumstances/episode. Arthur needs a very long time to really feel connections with people and only starts to consider love after he really gets to know them, hence his constant search for true love in the show. With Merlin I'm not entirely sure if he was attracted to him instantly, strangely enough feeling a connection from the moment they met, or if it takes him till the end of the series when Merlin confesses his magic and finally shows his true self to realise the depth of his feelings.

Merlin is, well... Bi Bi Bi. A disaster bi in fact. With a preference for sweaty men in metal boxes, he's not very peculiar. However, Merlin is a one person hyperfixation kind of guy. Most people are convinced that Merlin's gay.

Gwen: I feel like most people in BBC Merlin are bi and Gwen is no exception. Like Merlin, she prefers the hero type in metal uniforms. But she also had a thing for Morgana in the beginning.

Morgana: lesbian. I have never seen a woman so disinterested in men, I'm not surprised that they casted Katie McGrath in supergirl as supergirls love interest. I might settle for homoromantic and asexual. But definitly in love with Gwen in the very beginning.

Sir Leon, my beloved, the immortal, the one and only, the eternal suffering aro/ace. I don't have to explain this one. The only counter moment is the Lamia episode where Leon suddenly develops interest in women out of nowhere. My personal take is that anyone could be fallen under a Lamia's spell, this one just had a taste for men (and male presenting).

Sir Elian: once upon a time I clocked them as nonbinary and sadly that's as far as I thought into this character. Pretty sure he's aromantic. He/they pronouns. I dunno, I don't think Elian would conform to anything if given a choice. Aromantic too, I think. Like Leon, there is no interest there, but he does play around with Percival and Gwaine quite often, so I'd take that as allosexual.

I am excluding Gwaine because I think canon Gwaine is written as a straight oblivious fuckboy. Albeit a kind one XD fanon Gwaine is often poly/ pan... Or into apples. Lmao XD and I'm not sure about Percival because the man has a dead wife and kids.

Voltron

Keith: with his lack of interest in women, he can only be gay. That man looks at no one quite the same as he looks at Lance. what the hell was the whole bonding thing if not a hint for post canon klance? Sorry, not sorry XD rivals to best friends to lovers.

Lance: *bi bo bi* bisexual lighting Lance. Doesn't matter if you prefer klance or shallura, this man is a walking bi flag. I don't know what you mean by proof, just look at this wiggly boy with the fingerguns. He can't even sit straight! Can't do math either. He's perfect!

Shiro: probably the only character in my entire history of shipping that I would unqueer without feeling bad about it. I know he's gay, I just don't really see it in the writing. Of course there aren't always clear signs that someone is gay which is why this is good rep actually (+he's married), but you asked me for proof in the show and all I see is that this man is a dad. That's his gender and his orientation and that's all I really need to know.

Pidge: aro/ace because I love my aroaces and this child loves robots and robots only. Also nonbinary/genderqueer. Pronouns: fuck/off XD

I think Lotor should have been bi. Pre-canon Lotor had us Langsters ship Lotor x Lance and it was so much fun :D

The team leader is Rockie, an alien transfem goddess who can manipulate time itself. Her second in command is Cassie, a mute star based demi-goddess who's powers are basically like Star from SVTFOE, and she's the second youngest next to Chelsea, who's a supremely powerful witch of all the seas and oceans who's with February, a strong ice based witch.

Then there's the quadruple polycule of Candy, her universe's version if Cupid; Booker, a transmasc human-alien hybrid with the power to access minds; Alma, a witch from medieval times who can see into and command people's souls; and Summer, Mathew's former babysitter with powers based on the season of summer.

Speaking of Mathew, he's the adopted son of Camila and Manny who was taken from them by a rift when he was 6, and was found and taken in by Rockie, becoming a super powered wizard with the power of a sun based demi-god.

And he's dating Artura Peréz, her universe's version of Arthur Pendragon, who wields Excalibur itself, capable of cutting through ANYTHING.

They live in a fully magic-based mansion called The Safe Point, which is within Limbo, the space between everything, be it universe, timeline or dimension.

They're a found family of autistic and trans (Mathew's the token cis) weirdos who fight evil across the multiverse, with a few of their villains including Shadow Lord, a shadow demon of darkness; Lavendar, a fairy queen who's a metaphor for white feminism; E.N.F.O.R.C.E.R, a 50ft tall robot of destruction; and Eeyei, an eye based demon who's a metaphor for stalking.

Almost all of them are fully human except for Booker and Rockie, and most are mortal, save for Mathew, Cassie, Summer eventually and Rockie.

Their music taste is basically a mix of Sonic Colours and Sonic Frontiers. More upbeat, epic and kind of space like music.

They use so many colours they could single handedly fill 10 pride parades. /pos

Since Mathew is from TOH, they do meet that world again around TTT/S3 Ep1 and help beat Belos.

“Wha…?”

All young Ruby Rose could do at the moment is stare at her new friend and partner in stunned confusion as he to hold his hand out to her. Just mere moments ago, said partner, one Jaune Arc, had been out of breath after tearing through a horde of Beowulfs faster than she ever thought physically possible in a mesmerizing display of swordsmanship.

She had been left so speechless and in awe of the display, that she never noticed the lone Beowulf lunging to attack her from behind.

That is until she saw Jaune’s eyes widen and jump towards her in a bright flash of golden light to her aid.

All she could remember was seeing that bright light, feeling an odd sensation on the back of her right hand, the fading ash of a Grimm having been slain.

And the sight of Jaune’s new armor.

Gone was the casual black hoodie, blue jeans, and shoes with a chestplate and gloves worn on top. Now her partner stood before her wearing a blue, coat tailed tunic, with a different set of armor more befitting a royal knight, with armored boots and knee pads over black pants, a black hood pulled down around his neck and silver gauntlets on either arm, and an armored belt with metal folds hanging on either side, blue designs engraved upon the pieces of armor.

Her friend had merely given his new appearance a mild look of curiosity before turning towards her and stating���

Let’s rewind a bit, and review the course of events that lead our young, silver-eyed protagonist to this very moment, shall we?

My Merthur and Merlin sexuality headcanons

Merlin: bisexual and genderfluid. You can’t give me him dressing up as a woman and be caught holding so many dresses in canon and not have him be genderfluid. Also I hate how his canon relationship with Freya and his crushes on Sefa, Morgana, the disguised Nimueh, the troll pretending to be Catrina, and Gwen are erased and he’s just seen as gay. Especially with his raised eyebrows reaction whenever Mithian arrives at Camelot or when he sees Isolde with a sword. He even thought Vivian was beautiful till he learned how rude she was. Just because he didn’t fall under the Lamia’s spell (it’s literally because of his magic not because he’s not attracted to women, he didn’t fall asleep during the sleeping spell in the pilot either, that’s how his magic works!) and just because he got so obsessed with one man (Arthur) doesn’t mean he’s only interested in men. He’s immortal so why would he limit himself to only having relations with one gender for eternity? Or care about his own gender? 

Arthur: gay or bisexual. This one is harder for me because he’s so repressed that I can see him just being gay and also every relationship he’s had with a woman in canon has either been the result of an enchantment (ex: Sophia and Vivian) or there was just no chemistry and it seemed like it would be a friendly platonic marriage for the good of Camelot (ex: Gwen, Elena, and Mithian). But him being bisexual makes sense to me too. Maybe he’s demisexual and just can’t feel that way about anyone till he’s emotionally connected with them and that’s why it seems like he only has romantic and sexual chemistry with Merlin. 

Morgana: I headcanon her as aromantic and asexual most of the time. I can accept and read fics where Morgana is Arthur’s straight sister though because I know she had crushes on men in canon and because Katie McGrath had chemistry with Colin and Bradley and Eoin. However I can only read fics where Morgana is Arthur’s straight sister when she is shipped with certain men who I think she would actually respect and find attractive (Merlin, Gwaine, and Will if he survived). Most of the time I just can’t see her being interested in a relationship with anyone and only finds people attractive aesthetically. I feel like she probably went through a phase thinking she was a lesbian because she wasn’t interested in marrying a man but then she was like wait I’m not interested in being with a woman either... what am I?

Lancelot and Gwen: the straight couple in the group. I just didn’t get the vibe that Lancelot had a thing for Merlin, I feel like he just saw him as a little brother and I didn’t really get Morgana x Gwen either. 

Percival: straight. I didn’t really see the chemistry between Percival and Gwaine.

Gwaine: bisexual.

Leon: the longsuffering asexual friend waiting for Merthur to happen. 

Elyan: ace.

Mordred: gay. I ship him with Daegal.

Princess Elena and Lady Vivian: lesbians. 

Morgause: aroace.

Honestly, I see (the very valid) interpretation of Aro!Merlin, and I raise you demiro!Arthur.

I can't take credit for this interpretation, cuz I read a fic of him as demiromantic and it just clicked ok.

The only partners he's had are either ones he's been arranged to be with (Elena, Vivian (this one's not even true partnership cuz he was drugged)), and Gwen (who he's visibly shown to be attracted to when he gets to know her more deeply in the 2nd season).

And I keep thinking about the "Girls." "Girls" "Flowers" "Flowers" scene. It defo seems that Merlin isn't the only one oblivious about romance.

Anyways, that's my two cents on demiromantic Arthur.

But seriously yes! I think about this a lot actually. I go back and forth between demiromantic and demisexual but I do lean more towards demiromantic.

I also think Arthur wouldn't know it/ realize he feels love differently than others. Arthur has had very few crushes and his thought process is, 'well I'm the prince I don't have time for all that.' And when nobles flirt with him he's very aware that 99% of time it's because he's the prince so he's always chalked it up to having less opportunities for a real courtship.

“They’re having entire conversations and maintaining a fully functional healthy relationship, they’re just fucking idiots at the same time.” << canon

I’m not usually one for miscommunication as a trope but hear me out:

Arthur thinks he and Merlin are together because Merlin says shit like “you’re my destiny” and “two sides of the same coin” fairly often.

He even looks fond or proud whenever he calls Arthur a prat, and pet names never suited them. He considered it once but it just felt weird. “Idiot.” Changed to “Idiot <3” when they finally got together and that suits them much better than Darling or Babe or whatever else.

And it’s not like he doesn’t say romantic stuff back, all: “you’re the bravest man I ever met.” Or “you’re the best friend I have and I couldn’t bare to lose you”

Meanwhile, Merlin pinpoints the same moment Arthur believed they started dating as when Arthur started acting more affectionate and Merlin’s crush got dialled up to 11.

Arthur doesn’t seem to mind, so he pushes his luck occasionally and will hug Arthur after a long day or will lean on him if they’re eating together on a hunting trip. Merlin absolutely cherishes these moments, but he’s secretly wishing they meant as much to Arthur as they do to him. (Spoiler alert: they do.)

So they must be together, Merlin just can’t be bothered with titles and with everything that happened, Agravane and Morgana betraying him, it would be ideal to wait for an announcement of their relationship.

He gifts Merlin clothes, new boots, will leave flowers in his chambers and asked for the cook to make more of Merlin’s favourites so he can steal food from Arthur’s plate because he claims it tastes better when it isn’t his food.

Arthur gave Merlin his mother’s sigil, for crying out loud. They’re obviously together.

And even better, (you can pry demi or ace Arthur from my cold dead hands) they don’t even need to be intimate beyond the occasional hug or soft gestures like Merlin brushing the hair from his face before Arthur goes to sleep at night and Arthur doing the same whenever they’re not in the castle and sleeping next to each other. He was worried at first, but Merlin never expected it, which Arthur just takes as: “And how stupid to worry? who knows him better than Merlin? Of course he would already know Arthur didn’t feel comfortable with that sort of stuff.”

Then one day, a delegation comes to Camelot and one of the foreign knights is flirting with Merlin. Arthur sees, and he doesn’t usually feel any need to act on his jealousy because he trusts Merlin, but this knight isn’t flirting in the way Gwaine does that’s just part of who he is, and Merlin looks uncomfortable. So he calls Merlin over to him, starts acting like a prat, and keeps Merlin “busy” all night by keeping his goblet full or usual servants duties.

Then later, Merlin thanks Arthur but says he doesn’t need to worry and he can handle himself. Arthur, finally relaxing after being ready to start a fight for the past three hours, pulls Merlin into a hug and kisses his forehead, because let the medieval gays be soft sometimes. He whispers something like, “I know you don’t like talking about it, and that you’ve said you don’t need a title, but you shouldn’t have to handle everything on your own.”

Merlin pulls back, looking shocked and confused. Then they actually have to talk about everything.

Merlin’s just fine with actually dating the guy he’s got a massive crush on and now he’s more willing to instigate hugs and affection. (Arthur just thought Merlin wasn’t going to push him to not make him uncomfortable but secretly wishes that he would instigate more) They end up sleeping in the same bed in Camelot too, because cuddles and softness, something Arthur wanted for a while but didn’t know how to ask for.

Basically all the problems in the relationship that Arthur was worried about but kinda felt “it’s already more than I could hope for” so didn’t want to bring up get worked out naturally and Merlin, who was previously worried about his friendship getting ruined if they changed the dynamic too much, is shocked by how little actually changed now that they’re together. He just gets to hold Arthur’s hand, can be less subtle about stealing from his dinner, gets to relax and gets an Arthur that’s more clingy and soft now that Merlin knows he’s allowed to reciprocate affection.

They still tease each other, they’re still two idiots sharing a braincell that they occasionally give to Leon to babysit, they’re just more open about being in love now. (More open to each other, anyway. Literally everyone else in Camelot knew long before they did)

Bonus points if they’ve been talking about their relationship and having the important conversation with each other the entire time, just without actually talking about it. Merlin asking why Arthur suddenly changed how affectionate he is and Arthur saying he thought he was allowed. Merlin’s just like “cool, as long as you’re okay. I’m glad you’re feeling more comfortable and relaxed.” And glad there’s no love spells or anything sinister going on. Arthur says he doesn’t like Merlin flirting with Gwaine, even if he doesn’t mean it, and Merlin agrees to stop if it makes him uncomfortable. He doesn’t think too much into it, just thinks Arthur doesn’t like the casual flirting and believes that relationships are important so casual stuff isn’t super comfortable. Merlin is still friends with Gwaine, just makes less jokes about going home with or marrying him.

Like, they’re having entire conversations and maintaining a fully functional healthy relationship, they’re just fucking idiots at the same time.
