Unpregnant (2020) - Movie Review

Based on the novel “Unpregnant” by Jenni Hendriks and Ted Caplan

CW: Subject of abortion.

Veronica Clarke (Haley Lu Richardson) is a 17 year old high school student who finds out that she’s pregnant, however based on the laws in Missouri and growing up in a very religious household, she decides to travel out of state to potentially take care of the situation. She enlists the help of her former best friend Bailey Butler (Barbie Ferreira) because when rumors fly and your current friends are at the center of the investigation, you kinda need someone on the outside that you can trust. The two then set out on a road trip to really test who they are as humans.

Now I did not read the book, but I had heard of it and seen it at the library, so I knew it was becoming a movie, I just can’t tell you whether it was true to the book or not. Here’s what I can tell you though, Unpregnant was a decent teen buddy movie. It’s a “let’s get the old gang back together because the current situation ain’t it and I need real people,” kind of movie. It’s also fairly honest about people with uteruses and the length they may have to go to for bodily autonomy, especially before they’re adults. Note: This movie and it’s book were made before the overturning of Roe vs Wade, however I think its subject matter is just as timely now as it was back in 2020 and way before that.

I think most people will agree with me when I say that one of the better parts of the movie is that most of the good and safe people in the film were all either POC or LGBTQ. Of course that’s putting a lot of the saving of the white woman on POC and LGBTQ people, for me though, it just gave more of an irony vibe that I could smile at. Like yes you should trust the cool lesbian friend or the random guy you just met and the Black man who is hiding from the government.

To go along with that, this story is still riding on a ton of privilege. They poke a lot at the “safeness” of the road trip that these girls are on, to get us to laugh, but we all know that in real life the danger of a trip like that, for the reason they’re taking it, is so much more elevated and less comical. Not saying that it wasn’t an enjoyable film, just that it was done through a lighter YA book lens and we have to grade the curve on that. There are very serious chunks of the movie that are done fairly well, but then there are also BIG comedy scenes (probably to break the seriousness up) that kinda bring things down a little bit.

Unpregnant is in most part about friendship and conquering fears. It fits in right along with other teen, coming-of-age movies that have been made in the last like 8 years or so and if you’ve enjoyed any of those I think you’ll like this one too.

Boston Marathon bombing victims rip Tsarnaev’s latest legal appeal

**So due process and the right to appeal is a "cash cow" now? This whole attitude is why some of the appeals are being filed in the first place. BOSTON — Boston Marathon bombing victims say Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s attempt to get his old legal team back together is a waste of taxpayers’ money.

Tsarnaev, locked up in a Colorado Supermax, has an Aug. 21 court date in Boston where his lawyers will begin to try to keep him out of the electric chair.

That status conference is before federal Judge George A. O’Toole Jr.

“Who’s paying for this?” said Liz Norden. “He blew up innocent people and we’re told it’s no one’s business to know how much his lawyers cost? It makes no sense.”

The Department of Justice has denied a Herald public records request for Tsarnaev’s legal bill while his case drags on in the courts.

Norden has attempted to make every hearing in a solemn show of support for the victims of the bombing, including her two boys who lost their right legs that terrible day on Boylston Street on April 15, 2013.

Marc Fucarile, woke up in a hospital with his right leg mostly gone and his left one possibly next, said Monday the seemingly never-ending case against the bomber is an insult to the city.

“Stop wasting taxpayers’ dollars just for greedy lawyers,” he said of Tsarnaev’s appeal of his death penalty sentence. “He was already judged by his peers. There should be no question he deserves the death penalty.

“Let’s just cut off this cash cow,” he added.

The bomber has questioned the bias of two jurors in his 2015 death penalty trial and won a partial victory in the First Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston.

The appeals court stated “the district court’s investigation fell short of what was constitutionally required” over this one issue. If bias is shown, the court adds, Tsarnaev will be “entitled to a new penalty-phase proceeding.”

The alleged bias is over social media postings about the bombing made by two jurors.

The appeals court has added “regardless of the outcome, (Tsarnaev) will spend the rest of his life in prison.”

Now the bomber is moving quickly to assemble his legal team, with Boston attorney William Fick filing an appeal to return to the case now that he is in private practice.

Tsarnaev is “legally indigent,” Fick writes, and the courts should allow him back on the case “in order to serve the interests of justice, judicial economy, continuity in representation.”

His motion also states attorneys Daniel Habib, Deirdre von Dornum, and Mia Eisner-Grynberg from the Federal Defenders of New York, are on his side of the bench. It’s not clear if all the lawyers are working pro bono or submitting a bill.

The New York group does offer free help to “persons charged with federal crimes who cannot afford to hire an attorney.”

The case remains in the Seaport federal court before the same judge as the alleged bias of two jurors is re-examined, the court announced Monday. Still, Tsarnaev does have a chance to avoid death.

The bombing killed Martin Richard, 8; Krystle Campbell, 29; and Lu Lingzi, 23. More than 260 people were injured and maimed. MIT Police Officer Sean Collier, 27, was shot execution-style days later by Tsarnaev and his brother Tamerlan, killed hours later in a firefight in Watertown.

Boston Police Officer Dennis Simmonds, 28, injured in the Watertown shootout, died in April 2014.

Tsarnaev is locked up in the Federal Correctional Complex Florence in Colorado — a Supermax called the “Alcatraz of the Rockies.”

Book you’re currently reading: I just finished the ballad of songbirds and snakes. I loved the hunger games novels, and tbh, I was a little worried about this one. But the ending… Man. Suzanne Collins really did it. Now I’m very excited for the movie.

Last song you listened to: Sunset by The Midnight. That’s from season 3 episode 4 of Elite, playing when Lu comes down the stairs at her Valentine’s party, looking fire in her tux. Yes, I still listen to my Elite playlist.

Currently watching: DWTS- team Jason and Dani all the way. And Grey’s Anatomy reaction videos on YouTube. When I am emotionally exhausted, I want comfort TV, and watching reactions to a show I know by heart is very comforting to me. We’re talking season two of Grey’s Anatomy btw, with my favorite storyline: Izzie and Denny (that’s where my URL comes from).

Fic you’re currently reading: the house is white, the lawn is dead, a Shiv/Karolina Succession fic. And I’m planning to catch up with the Class fics by @dhyanshiva, whose writing is so lyrical and beautiful that I’m jealous and love it at the same time 😅😘

Next on your to watchlist: Buccaneers! I’m just waiting until most of it is out on Apple TV+ so I won’t have to pay for the extra streaming service for too long. Also Everything Now on Netflix. It’s a British teen dramedy that looks really promising, about a girl who’s just come out of an inpatient eating disorder clinic and is trying to rejoin normal life with her friends. I really want to check it out, but I’m also a little scared.

Lola’s POV

Houses, buildings, and scenery, I've always seen now going past my eyes in a second.

The train is cold, but her hand holding mine is warm. I don't know if I'll come to regret this decision but I have a feeling I won't.

I never really thought that I would leave my home. Yet here I am, on a train, with one backpack that has my ID, social security, a 2 dollar bill, half eaten bag of turbos, my phone, earbuds, and a lighter. With a girl I just met.

I text my dad saying that i'll be living with my friend from now. Not that he would care, I don't have a bad relationship with my dad, it's just we don't have a relationship at all to say if it's good or bad.

My older siblings have their lives now with their own family so they won't care. It's just me and this girl now. For how long? I don't know.

I turn to the girl and see that she's fallen asleep, her head on my shoulder. I watch as her chest rises up and down and paired with the silence of the train puts me to sleep.

I wake up to someone moving me gently. Her face clouds my eyesight, it's dark outside, and I hear the commotion of people getting up and leaving. I check my phone and see that it's 2 am.

I grab my stuff and follow her, we push our way through the crowd, she grabs my hand and starts running. Where? I don't know, but I hope it isn't far because I hate running.

We ended up at a dennys.

We eat and drink in silence. She takes a big sip of her hot chocolates and stuffs a big forkful of pancakes in her mouth.

She stares at me while she chews. She takes a big gulp.

" What's your name? Mines Lucia, not Lu see ya but Lu chee ya. "

" Lola. "

Silence falls again.

" Um i'm sorry if you felt pressured to come with me. I mean you don't even know me. I'm sorry I dragged you with me. I just felt like I had to take you with me. "

" It's fine. I felt like I had to go with you too. "

We both give a small but sincere smile at each other.

" So what do we do from here? " I ask.

" Im actually from here, I was just visiting. " She says

" So why don't you live with me. " Lucia says.

" ok. "

Silence, but not an awkward silence.

" It's weird because I had the worst day yesterday but when I saw you and was with you, I'd had forgotten why I was even sad. " Lucia says.

" What happened that made you want to run away? " I ask.

"  I was born ugly. "
