Hidradenitis Suppurativa
Those two words are hell. I feel like I am in hell constantly. For those who don’t know, Hidradenitis Suppurativa, or HS for short, is a chronic skin condition that shows up as lumps or cysts due to inflammation and infection of the sweat glands.
I was diagnosed with this disease when I was in early high school. It started with a big cyst in the center of my chest. I went to the hospital to get it removed and I was told it was MRSA. After that point, I started getting cysts more frequently. This wasn’t normal for me.
I eventually went to the dermatologist and got their input. After some tests it came out to be HS. I was devastated but didn’t truly understand the impact it would have on me mentally and physically years to come.
I have been prescribed antibiotics, clyndamicin, even taken a shot called Humira in efforts to find some sort of relief from this disease but to no prevail. I have been cut open, had the cysts drained and packed, and it is not something I would wish on my worse enemy.
Aside from the pain, it is very detrimental to my mental health. The scars from these cysts have remained, showing up between my thighs, my armpits, and even my breasts. It makes me ashamed of my body. The looks I get from the scars makes me want to hide away from the world. When the cysts do occur, there is a pungent smell that lingers from the infection that makes it so much worse. I feel like a dirty troll.
It affects my relationships and work life. I often have a hard time opening up to a lover in fear that I will be judged for the scars or for the smell. I wish nothing more than to be able to wear revealing clothing that makes me feel sexy- tanks tops, low cut shirts, shorts, skirts, you name it.. instead I hide away in sweats and a hoodie. Why did this happen to me? What did I do to deserve such a thing?
I often have to call out of work if a cyst gets too painful to move or the stench is too strong, making me bed bound. I try to not let it stop me but it seems to have more control most days.
I want to be normal. I want to stop fighting my body, and finally live in my body. If anyone else suffers from this, please know you are not alone. You are strong and beautiful, despite how you feel.
Fuck Hidradenitis Suppurativa!

I've been rolling around the idea of a tfp Skulduggery Pleasant AU for a while -- here's a joke courtesy of my friend @piptheteeththief that was too funny for me to not draw it
[Image ID: A digital drawing with the title "DOCTORS HATE THEM" in impact font. Underneath the text are Skulduggery Pleasant, a human skeleton dressed in a black suit, complete with black shoes, a black tie and a black hat. His hands are in his pockets. To his right is a human version of Wheeljack from the same franchise, drawn as a lean white man in his early 40s. His hair is ash-colored and very shaggy. On his head he has a dark brown cowboy hat. His eyes are grey and he has a slightly crooked nose, like it had broken before and never set the same way as it was before. He also has many small scars on his face and is smiling. In addition to his hat, his outfit consists of a white, green and red plaid shirt that's half tucked, a light gray aviator jacket, a dark brown belt with a silver buckle, dark red trousers and dark brown boots. He also has his hands in his pockets. / End ID]

class consciousness is so stupid low among medical professionals. the amount of them that are willing to work and enforce systems that force their colleagues to work 90+ hours a week (putting them at risk, putting their PATIENTS at risk) because if they instead accept normal worker protections and demand that hospitals/governments hire more specialists for better coverage then they have to go from mid-high six figure earnings to like idk lower six figure earnings?
#like are you gonna spend all that money in the afterlife when you get there from a premature heart attack or#anyway i do see some residents in the USA forming actual unions and doing contract bargaining#and the way the attendings try to put a stop to that shit. absolutely despicable#like. its a massive issue dermatology and opth are extremely competitive BECAUSE they offer normal full time schedules#like surgical specialties are less competitive because its 100+ hour residencies and also insane attending schedules#listen to marx and medicine pod etc but like.#genuinely so frustrating to see the way residents with a modicum of class consciousness fight for labour rights#and some boomer attending shoot it down because if he suffered the children must also suffer#my posts

I have worked in industry for TEN FUCKING YEARS and only just now figured out my skin issues are triggered by the hairnets we wear. I've seen dermatologists for this shit and they have all told me it's stress-related.
But some rando doctor covering for my usual GP saw the patches on my neck was was like "Hey, do you wear a hairnet regularly? It's super common for the dye in hairnets to trigger dermatitis."
And SURE-E-FUCKING-NOUGH I started wearing a headband so it doesn't press on my skin during the day and the patches are GONE. It doesn't itch! I don't have to apply steroid cream all the damned time anymore!
So public service announcement: if you have what you think is eczema on your scalp and neck and you work in an industry that requires hairnets, you too might have hairnet-induced dermatitis. Try a headband and/or bandana.
#apparently this has been a known thing since the 50s#and I already knew I was allergic to some nitrile dyes#but apparently it's easier to blame stress than do a fucking patch test#health issues#dermatology#work was literally making me unwell

Excerpt from this story from Mother Jones:
When a man with painful cystic acne came to dermatologist Eva Rawlings Parker for help in a Nashville clinic, she couldn’t prescribe him doxycycline or minocycline, two medications she’d typically use to treat this condition. This is because the man was a roofer, says Parker, and these medications would have impacted his ability to tolerate heat.
Parker’s patient was far from alone. Other common medications for physical health, like beta blockers, can impact people’s ability to handle heat. Many medications for mental health do, too.
Conventional wisdom tells people with conditions that make them unusually vulnerable to the sun, like the autoimmune disorder lupus, or are on medications that lead to heat sensitivity, to avoid staying outside when the sun is at its strongest.
But for the one-third of US workers who must spend regular time outdoors, that advice bursts into flames. For some, such as farmworkers, hours and hours of heat exposure, with minimal or no reprieve, are just part of the job. Increasing heat waves and more frequent wildfires point to the need to find real solutions for outdoor workers—and highlight how labor and climate change are intertwined.
Edward Flores, faculty director of the Community and Labor Center at the University of California, Merced, specializes in the conditions of low-wage and immigrant workers in California. He says the need for heat safety policy reform is acute. “We know that workers have been dying,” Flores says, “because of chronic conditions that accumulate through heat stress over many years and decades that lead to shorter life spans.”
Parker, the dermatologist, is acutely aware of how heat can trigger or worsen skin problems. She is co-chair of the American Academy of Dermatology’s group on climate change and environmental issues, and was an author of a 2023 review on the ways climate change can contribute to dermatological issues, including triggering flares of conditions like hidradenitis suppurativa—which causes painful lumps deep in a person’s skin—and skin cancer.
Workers do have some legal rights to breaks and water, depending on the locale. California, Oregon, and Washington are the only states that mandate those breaks. And roughly half of crop farmworkers have no legal work authorization. That lack of legal status, and the threat of deportation, gives many workers reason to fear complaining about working conditions.
In July, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration proposed a new set of rules which would help protect more than 36 million workers from heat-related illness or death. The proposed OSHA rules would require employers to monitor their workers for heat exhaustion symptoms, provide adequate water and shade, designate break areas, and provide mandatory rest breaks, among other things.

Yo yo, do you think you could write hcs about a gn reader who has very sensitive skin who is dating Ratio? I feel like Ratio would love quality time with his lover, and baths together would be one avenue. But what would he do to work around reader’s skin issues? (I have to use special body wash and lotion after bathing otherwise I will literally never stop the itch rip)
Your Skin, My Careful Study
Tags: Ratio x Reader, Fluff, Domesticity, Established Relationship, Thoughtful Partner, Protective Ratio, Skincare & Self-Care, Sensitive Skin Accommodations, Bath Time, Gentle Affection, Intellectual Romance.
Warnings: Just soft, caring Ratio being incredibly attentive and meticulous about your comfort 🫶💜
A/N: I'm so sorry to hear that anon 😭🙏 it must be a struggle

Ratio is incredibly detail-oriented, so the moment he learns about your sensitive skin, he researches extensively. He won’t just look up generic solutions—he'll analyze dermatological studies, consult experts, and maybe even develop his own custom regimen for you.
Since he enjoys baths with you, he ensures that the water temperature is just right and only uses the most soothing, hypoallergenic bath products. He even experiments with making his own bath oils infused with gentle, natural ingredients. If he discovers a formula that works well for you, he considers patenting it—just for fun.
Any clothing or bedding he buys for you must pass his “skin test.” If it’s not ultra-soft, breathable, and non-irritating, he won’t allow it near you. He'll special-order silk sheets and make sure your towels feel like clouds. He’d definitely brag about how your comfort is a top-tier priority.
Ratio enjoys the intimacy of helping you with skincare. If applying lotion or soothing balms is necessary, he does it himself with steady, careful hands, taking his time as if he's conducting a delicate experiment. You’ll catch a soft, almost smug smile when he sees how much better your skin feels afterward.
If anyone dismisses your skin sensitivity, Ratio immediately shuts them down with cold, cutting precision. He has zero patience for ignorance and will lecture them until they regret speaking. He’d also subtly shield you from anything that might irritate your skin—whether that means steering you away from strong perfumes or ensuring no rough materials touch you.
If extreme temperatures trigger flare-ups, Ratio devises a plan. He ensures the environment around you is always optimal—whether it's adjusting room humidity, carrying a cooling gel pack, or having custom-tailored clothing for different seasons. If you ever get too warm or too cold, he fixes it before you even have to say anything.
Since he adores wisdom and academia, Ratio turns self-care into a ritual. He'll light gentle, non-irritating candles, put on calming classical music, and wrap you in the softest robe. He may even wear his alabaster mask, joking that he’s your personal guardian of skin health.
He won’t always outright say he worries about your skin, but you'll find neatly organized lists of recommended products, ingredient breakdowns, and skincare guides subtly left in places you'll find them. If you ever tease him about it, he’ll feign indifference—though the faint smirk gives him away.
While enjoying baths together, he casually analyzes the way your skin reacts to different conditions. “Hmm… so your skin prefers lukewarm water over warm. Fascinating.” It’s half-joking, half-genuine curiosity. If you splash water at him in retaliation, he’ll chuckle and retaliate—gently, of course.
While Ratio has a sharp, analytical mind, he softens when it comes to you. If your skin ever gets irritated, he never makes you feel like a burden. Instead, he methodically helps soothe the discomfort, as if it’s the most natural thing in the universe. And when your skin feels good? He subtly admires you more, brushing his fingers over yours with an unspoken sense of pride.

MEDICAL REQUEST REPORT
DRC, Prenatal Division, Gestational Support Division
To: Operations Oversight Committee
From: Dr. [REDACTED], Gestational Support Division, Head of Dermatology
Date: [REDACTED]
Subject: Increased Demand for Dermatological Supplies
Overview
The Dermatology Department has observed a significant increase in cases of nipple irritation and related dermatological complications associated with excessive lactation and weight gain among surrogates. This trend has created an acute demand for additional moisturizing lotions, ointments, and specialized care supplies, which our department currently lacks the funds or infrastructure to provide.
I. Key Observations:
Excessive Lactation
Surrogates carrying large multiples exhibit abnormally high milk production starting in mid to late-term gestation (15-20 days). This leads to skin overhydration, irritation, and cracking of the nipple and surrounding areolar tissue.
Nipple Irritation
Constant leakage causes persistent dampness, fostering irritation and increasing susceptibility to [REDACTED].
Friction from improperly fitted paternity garments exacerbates the problem, causing rawness in extreme cases.
Complications
Reports of dermatitis have risen by 37% over the past quarter, requiring additional intervention.
II. Lactation Volume Trends
Generally, surrogates at +15 days gestation can lactate up to 1 gallon or more of milk daily. This necessitates additional accommodations for milking and storage capabilities. The substantial output directly results from enhanced hormonal protocols, multi-fetal pregnancies, and specialized dietary regimens designed to maximize pre-natal milk supply.
"I wake up drenched, and the fabric sticks to me. My chest is so heavy it’s pulling my shoulders forward, and it feels like my back is going to snap. My pecs are always sore, and the creams don’t do much. It’s not funny when you can’t sleep because it feels like your chest is wetting itself." - Surrogate S136-645-L, 27 days gestation with dodecuplets (12)
Due to the extraordinary lactation demands, the average pectoral size for surrogates has risen to K or larger. This unprecedented increase in breast size presents unique challenges:
Physical Strain: The weight of milk-filled pectorals, combined with the already substantial physical burden of multi-fetal pregnancies, significantly increases strain on the back, shoulders, and chest.
Clothing Requirements: Standard paternity garments cannot support surrogates with such large pectoral sizes. Custom-fitted or medical-grade support is necessary to reduce discomfort and prevent long-term musculoskeletal issues.
Dermatological Concerns: The enlarged size and volume contribute to persistent skin irritation, chafing, and [REDACTED]. Prolonged dampness from lactation leakage exacerbates these conditions, emphasizing the need for high-quality emollients, breathable fabrics, and anti-[REDACTED] treatments.
III. Stretch Mark Management
The extreme abdominal growth observed in surrogates has resulted in widespread reports of severe stretch marks accompanied by skin tearing and irritation. The epidermis’s inability to maintain elasticity under such extreme strain has led to:
Deep dermal tears across the abdomen and sides, causing discomfort and risk of infection.
Skin discoloration and prolonged inflammation complications have led to [REDACTED].
"The stretch marks are everywhere — they itch like crazy. My belly is so big it rubs against my legs so badly when I walk. I’ve been using diaper cream because that’s all they have, and even that’s running out. It’s humiliating to ask for more!" - Surrogate S112-529-P, 30 days gestation with sexdecuplets (16)
Recommendations:
Increase inventory of stretch mark creams containing high-grade hyaluronic acid and retinol to improve skin elasticity and promote healing.
Provide surrogates with access to medical-grade silicone sheets for scar prevention.
Weight Gain and Related Complications
The rapid weight gain associated with multi-fetal pregnancies has also resulted in significant dermatological challenges in the buttocks and upper thigh areas. Reports of chafing, redness, and [REDACTED] have increased as surrogates struggle to manage:
Localized inflammation due to friction from excess weight.
Moisture buildup leads to skin irritation, particularly in the thighs and lower back creases.
"The swelling, the stretching, the leaking — it never ends. My pecs are so big they hit my belly like doorbell knockers whenever I walk. My nipples are basically faucets from the constant milk flow." - Surrogate S126-773-O, 28 days gestation with quindecuplets (15)
IV. Resource Needs
To address these challenges and maintain operational efficiency, the Dermatology Department formally requests the following:
Increased Lotion Supply
The current inventory of emollients and specialized nipple creams, including higher volumes of lanolin-based creams, breathable clothing, and anti-[REDACTED] treatments.
Provide high quantities of zinc oxide-based diaper creams to prevent and treat skin irritation caused by chafing and moisture.
Enhanced Clothing Options
Access to soft, breathable paternity garments designed to minimize friction and wick moisture is urgently needed. Custom-fitted support designed for surrogates with K-pectoral sizes or larger.
Additional Staff Support
More trained dermatological aides are required to handle the increasing caseload effectively.
Regularly monitoring surrogate health to preempt complications arising from excessive milk production and epidermal strain.
V. Impact on Compound Operations
Failure to address these dermatological issues promptly risks:
Reduced surrogate comfort, leading to lower compliance and increased resistance.
Escalated medical costs due to untreated infections and complications.
Conclusion
The Dermatology Department strongly advises immediate approval of the requested resources to mitigate these challenges and ensure the continued efficiency of the compound’s operations. Please prioritize the allocation of additional lotions, creams, and suitable clothing options for surrogates experiencing these conditions.

To: Head of Dermatology, Dr. [REDACTED]
From: Director [REDACTED]
Date: [REDACTED]
Subject: RE: Increased Demand for Dermatological Supplies
Following your memorandum's review, I approve the request for the increased lotion supply and additional staff support to manage the complications among surrogates.
However, the request for enhanced clothing options is denied at this time. While clothing-related discomfort is acknowledged, allocating resources to garments over medical supplies is not justifiable under current conditions. Prioritizing lotion supplies and preventative care will address most dermatological concerns without incurring unnecessary costs. Surrogates will continue wearing standard paternity garments or nothing at all (for late-term surrogates), and this decision will be reassessed during the next yearly review if issues persist.
Moving forward, while their discomfort is noted, surrogates are to remain functional assets. I expect your team to focus on preventative care and rapid treatment protocols to maintain compliance and meet compound objectives.
Director [REDACTED]

Recently, someone sent me a message asking about the use of cells from aborted babies in skin care products and, well, I found out something quite interesting.
From what I can tell, there aren't any US based companies that use these cells but there is at least one (probably more) European company that does use them.
Neocutis is a Swiss company but they do have a location in San Francisco. The ingredient they had listed for a while in their anti-aging products was processed skin cells (PSP).
"Neocutis defended the use of its trademarked ingredient, Processed Skin Cell Proteins, or PSP, arguing that the fetal cell line was harvested in a responsible, ethical manner for use in treating severe dermatological injuries. The ingredient was developed at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland from proteins in the skin tissue of a 14-week-old male baby electively aborted at the university’s hospital and donated to the Swiss university. The abortion was deemed medically necessary because the baby could not survive to term, according to Neocutis. The fetal skin cell line was taken from a piece of skin the size of a postage stamp."
If you look on their website today you won't see processed skin cells in their product ingredients but you will see "cutaneous lysate" which is exactly the same thing. They just changed the name because "processed skin cells" was becoming too recognizable as aborted baby cells.
This is a screenshot I took from their website
The specific problem products are their lumiere, bio-serum, prevedem, journee, biogel, and bio-restorative skin cream products but I would recommend just avoiding the entire company. Other than the ethical issues they are hella expensive.
I got a lot of information from this pamphlet, which is an interesting read and I independently verified the information within before making the post.

A scar is healed tissue that forms after an injury which has different properties than unharmed skin. The variation in how healing occurs depends on multiple factors related to the person and injury in question: where on the body it happens, what caused it, and how the healing process proceeded. While magical healing can be inferred to leave no scar, there are situations where a character may not have had access to it in time to avoid injury, and scars are canonically present on several members of the Chain. How visible a scar is depends on colour, texture, and level relative to other skin (depressed or raised.)
Scars that are from minor wounds or growth (stretch marks) and that heal with minimal disruption may be simply a different texture and level with other skin. Deeper injuries will tend to be depressed; cuts can tend towards being raised and thicker, and the thicker a scar is the "tighter" the skin will be, with a reduction in elasticity which may pull or cause pain.
Tight or over-developed scars (common with burns or long cuts) may pull or cause pain, and require regular maintenance with massage, lotion, and stretching to prevent issues with movement.
What kind of scars do the Chain have?
Are there underlying issues they're hiding from the others?
Are they painful, or do they require regular care?
Can the others help with it, or do they prefer to keep the matter private?
Are there scars that hide stories they don't want to tell the others but which are obvious from it nonetheless?

Can I please have an imagine where the reader is the younger twin sister of Meredith Grey and ends up falling in love with Addison Montgomery. The two get together and keep it a secret for awhile (because your twin sister getting with your boyfriends ex wife is kinda weird). But one day the two are caught in an on-call room by everyone. A bit of angst with a lot of fluff please?
In the Shadows and Under the Sheets !!!Light NSFW!!!
Pairing: Addison Montgomery x fem!reader
Warnings: major mommy issues, secret relationship, brief on-call room sex hehe, light angst<3
A/N: first oneshot for McMommy Addison Montgomery hope you enjoy<3
As much as you loved your twin sister, part of you resented her. Your mother had encouraged her to go to med school. Your mother encouraged her to be a surgeon. Your mother encouraged her to be amazing, one of a kind, extraordinary.
“You’d be more suited as a nurse,” she had said before you applied to every possible pre-med program in the country at seventeen. “Or maybe dermatology.”
Straight A’s since grade school, a perfect 1600 on your SAT, graduated Magna Cum Laude, and you’d only be fit as a nurse? Not that there’s anything wrong with that. Nurses are the backbone of the healthcare system. They leave and everything falls apart.
But to have your mother have so little faith in you–it hurt. It hurt more than you could possibly imagine. Maybe it was because you reminded her too much of your father–too soft, not hardcore enough for a surgeon.
“Sometimes I wish I listened to my mom’s advice,” you mutter into the darkness of Addison’s bedroom.
Addison, who lays beside you with her head on your chest, sits up. “What?”
“She–” you clear your throat. “She told me, before applying to med school, that I’d be better suited as a nurse–or in dermatology. That I’m too soft and that I wouldn’t make it as a surgeon.”
Addison brought a hand to your forehead, brushing aside stray hair. “You? Too soft?” When you nodded silently, she flashed a bitter-sweet smile. “Sweetheart…you are an amazing surgeon. Being soft isn’t a weakness. You need to have compassion and empathy if you’re going to be a doctor–especially if you do plan on going into pediatrics.”
The sound of your alarm startles you and press a reassuring kiss to Addison’s lips before getting out of bed and starting your morning routine.
__________
Addison sighed heavily as she scribbled down details of her most recent patient in their chart. You stare at her from afar, admiring the way her glasses sit, perched on the bridge of her nose, and the way she seems to drown out everything when she concentrates. How her skirt hugs her curves, how her hair is pinned up and exposing her neck…
“You seem stressed,” you murmur, standing beside Addison under the guise of discussing a case.
She side-eyes you, trying to hold back a smile before going back to filling out her patient’s chart. “I’m…fine.”
“You sure about that?” you ask. “Because I have a very good way to help with stress and I think you’ll want to take me up on this offer…” You take the pen from her hand and grin, clicking it and placing it in the pocket of your white coat. “On-call room three. Five minutes.”
__________
You giggle as Addison presses kisses to your neck and removes your scrub top. You hold her close, running your hands up and down her body before unbuttoning her blouse and tossing it to the side.
“Still stressed?” you ask.
“I dunno,” she answers lowly. “If I am, do we get to continue?”
You laugh quietly, “We’d continue even if you weren’t stressed.”
Addison presses a firm kiss to your lips and you make your way down her body, placing soft, open-mouth kisses to her navel and nipping at her hips. You slowly drag her skirt down and continue with your kisses down her thighs as you toss it onto the floor.
You smile against her inner thigh and she jolts at your bites before letting out a soft moan. “God, you are gorgeous…”
She takes a deep breath and sighs as you get closer and closer to her aching core, Don’t stop, please, don’t stop.”
You wrap your arms around her thighs to hold her still, and just as you were about to get started, the worst possible thing happened.
As the on-call room light turns on, you gasp and look up. “Meredith!”
She stands in the doorway with an awkward look on her face before shutting the door quickly. Climbing out of the bed quickly, you pull on your scrub top, “You didn’t lock the door, Addison?”
Before she gets a chance to respond, you rush out the door and find that Meredith is still there–waiting for you. “Mer, I–”
“No,” she says. “Don’t. You gave me crap for sleeping with an attending.”
“I know, and I’m s–”
“I’m not done. You gave me crap about sleeping with Derek and now you’re sleeping with his wife!”
“Ex-wife,” you mumble.
“It doesn’t matter!” she snaps. “You’re a hypocrite! How long has this been going on?”
You thought for a moment, counting back the months of seemingly harmless flirting and innocent touches before it turned into…not so innocent touches. “Um…a couple months.”
“I’m your sister! You were the first person I told after I got back together with Derek!” There was a moment’s silence between the pair of you before Meredith spoke up again. “Are you happy?”
“What?”
“Does…does she make you happy?” Meredith repeats.
“...Yes,” you respond. “Yeah, she does.”
“Okay…good.”
“Good.”
Answering a page, Meredith leaves you to your own devices and you return to the on-call room. You watch with a grin as Addison buttons up her blouse.
“What?” she says.
“Next time,” you smile, placing a soft kiss on her lips, “lock the damn door.”

I actually do like babies, and children in general. Probably even more than I like snakes! It’s just that it’s harder to give a snake a complex about food, money, gender, sexuality, etc. Most of their issues seem to be dermatological.
