The Medarda arc of s2 struggled to be good, because the plot viciously smothered it. You can argue that Arcane was never about politics but you cannot say the Medardas were never explicitly a family defined by politics. So when the show shifted it's priorities from a drama steeped in political conflict where even though the setting was fantastical the stakes were grounded to a shift where magic is the end all be all threat to humanity, the Medardas are rendered largely irrelevant.

In s2 Mel's agency over her own story is both largely stripped from her and poorly communicated. Arcane has Mel abducted from the plot to be the Black Rose's captive. Even when Mel manages to free herself it's not through the traits the audience understands are her strengths, her cunning and social intelligence, it's through an innate instinct that natural to her and indecipherable to the audience.

Ambessa as a character is more or less a villain of convenience, which would be fine if she wasn't immediately following Silco's act. Once Mel is removed from the story Ambessa is largely disconnected from any emotional tension fuels conflict between the characters and previously drove the plot in s1. She's there to play the worse bad guy for Caitlyn and then give Viktor the man power for the Glorious Evolution.

It's frustrating to see the Medardas used the way they are in s2 because when they're together I can see how it could be good. When they're together Mel forces emotion out of Ambessa. In Act 1, Ambessa proved she could do circles around Piltover's court, which could actually put Mel in a tight spot.

Their final scene on paper sounds like a good idea where the true resolution to Mel and Ambessa's story was that Ambessa saw Mel's own ruthless behavior as she not only betrayed Ambessa to the Black Rose, but used her as BAIT to double cross LeBlanc. Ambessa died proud that her daughter killed her the way she did, and that's so cool and tragic, but the execution was a flop.

One, their final fight is completely unimportant to the actual Glorious Evolution, Mel's grief can't even be a highlight because it's interrupted by Viktor's mind trap. Two, their fight didn't rely on any of Mel's actual strengths, just magic and the poorly explained MacGuffin LeBlanc gave her. How did Mel even know it would do that?

It's like the writers had the bones for a great story for the Medardas, but then they're like the world's worst archeologists and fit those bones together in the worst way possible because they were convinced the bones made a stegasaurus instead of a T-rex or something.

I would love to be able to sideload books and articles from jstor to my Kindle, and converting from pdf to AZW3 or MOBI often turns my files into an unintelligible garble. Is there any way to download non-pdf files from jstor????? please help :((

Hi! We're sorry you're running into issues here. I ran into a similar issue recently, and it's quite disappointing!

Right now, we have some articles and books available as epubs (like here), but file types apart from PDFs aren't widely supported across JSTOR. We expect to host more content available as epubs in the future.

PDFs aren't the easiest for conversion to other file types because they contain a lot of... stuff, to put it simply. You could have plain text or you could have a series of image scans, and these all behave differently. I've seen suggestions to convert PDFs to .docx or .txt files and then create epubs/other files out of them (but even that can get messy).

In short, there doesn't seem to be an easy solution for file conversion here because you're starting with a PDF. If anyone in the community has found a workaround for this, we'd love to hear it!

A while back you made a post talking about yakumo and his sensitivity to temperature and I haven't stopped thinking about it. imagine when winter comes around and yakumo becomes progressively sluggish, usually staying in the kitchen and not leaving for hours, always making something near the stove to feel a little warmth from the flames or from a little taste of the things he's making (soup probably), or him picking up the habit of bundling himself up and staying in the library to read and nap. maybe when it starts getting even colder he barely leaves his room because its too uncomfortably cold for him, and if he does he's probably looking for eiden to help him warm up, but if eidens not around he gets antsy and looks for somebody else in the mansion, but he's too shy to ask and looks at whoever with his wet eyes so they know he's cold and wants a cuddle

I have a very old kindle fire and it's starting to show its age in terms of not staying charged (and also isn't compatible with libby even though it's supposed to be). I'm not looking to replace it yet but when I do I was planning to go back to the paperwhite type e-reader with the e-ink screen and minimal extra features. I would now prefer to get one from a company other than Amazon. Does anyone have any recommendations? I would be using it primarily for library books, not purchased books.

tl;dr i cosplayed at the one piece symphony and ref'd this off a photo of me (tl;dr 2: it was amazing, if you are able to go then go), which is funny considering i take photos of myself to use as refs all the time but this is the first i've done in a long time that's this one-to-one!

i don't cosplay often (ever?) and i'm pretty shy so this was some kinda experience. i am very flattered that people thought i looked nice enough to take a photo with me. i was also dying inside.

TESSA GRAY CHARACTER ANALYSIS PLEEASE

Tessa is just so. She's Tessa. She keeps losing her entire life again and again, but each time she refuses to let it break her. Something I think about a lot is how completely adrift she was in Clockwork Prince. When Clary was thrown into the shadow world, she had Simon and Luke and Jocelyn to anchor her. She was literally still in the city where she grew up. Yes it was disturbing for her to learn about the magical underbelly to people and places that used to be familiar, but that familiarity never really went away. Tessa, though? She was on a new continent entirely surrounded by strangers, and her one tie to the life she left behind in New York was Nate, and even though she desperately clung to him it turned out that he was willing to sell her out to a monster. (I have a whole post about Nate and Tessa's relationship because it's endlessly fascinating to me). And then she found a home with the London Shadowhunters, and she was never quite the same as them but it didn't matter because they were her family, and then that difference got more and more noticeable as her friends aged and died around her, and she had to leave and start new again. When Jem found her in 2008 she knew exactly what she was signing up for because she'd already gone through it; a lifetime of love and an eternity of loss. Still, she accepted that because the chance to love and be loved is always worth it. So many of the immortal characters deal with numbness as they feel disconnected from the ever-changing world around them, but Tessa is so fundamentally passionate that she will always be a part of that world and she will always find new things to live for when the old ones fade away.

I love how she's so witty and doesn't take anyone's bullshit. As a newcomer to London she was constantly left in the dark about the schemes around her, but she still demanded respect and kept up with the people who treated her as a pawn. She was kinda created as a big macguffin, but she kept fucking up everybody's plans because she refused to be a passive plot device in someone else's story.

I've been mostly serious here, but I also want to mention that I think Tessa is a really fun character! I like being in her head and hearing about how she sees the world. I like that she's passionate about books and jokes around with her friends. I think one reason that she and Will work so well together is that he always projects his humor and personality out as a shield, and Tessa is a lot more quiet on the surface but they're similarly thoughtful and silly. Tessa sees through Will's bullshit but she also enjoys the chance to banter with him and let him draw her out of her shell.

Also, crucially, I imprinted on Tessa like a baby duck when I was thirteen and so she will always be a part of me.
