For those who don't wanna look through all of it, here are some highlights I found!

Interesting changes from the pitch (What Alex Hirsch showed Disney to make them greenlight the show):

Stan’s secret was that he’s secretly protecting the townsfolk from weirdness, nothing to do with Ford. No mention of Ford in the pitch at all. Stan also wanted Dipper and Mabel to be his successors in this version.

Mabel used to be the unhygienic one instead of Dipper.

Wendy was brunette and didn’t work as the Mystery Shack cashier, instead selling veggie juice out of her van.

As such, Soos (Jesús in this version) worked the register in addition to his handyman job in this version. He was a bit less of a hard worker here, watching telenovelas on the job sometimes, but still loves his job and is extremely loyal to Stan.

Robbie was almost exactly the same, parents’ backstory and all, but there’s an interesting note that he occasionally clashed with Gideon in this version (which we never got in the final show)

Speaking of which, Gideon’s last name in this version was Garrymore instead of Gleeful.

Gideon used to personally harass and prank Stan, going out of his way to vandalize Stan’s stuff himself.

Manly Dan was always planned to be Wendy’s dad. In this version, he hates the idea that his hipster daughter prefers conserving the environment instead of chopping down forests

(For those who wanted more Wendy episodes, I’m surprised Hirsch didn’t use this as a conflict for one of them- it makes her interesting without costing any of her “coolness”)

Sheriff Blubs was originally Sheriff “Blumps”. Durland has the same name likely because Hirsch said he’s named after a real guy.

With no Ford and no Journal mentioned, episodes were originally very different-

“The President’s Cabinet/Irrational Treasure.” Instead of via the journal, Dipper and Mabel find a record of Quentin Trembley in a box buried in the yard. No Pacifica mentioned here.

“Secret Dungeon” Dipper becomes obsessed with a recalled arcade cabinet. Mabel must try and save him by finding the original high scorer.

“Thtupid Thursday” One of the many ‘Shining Twins’ episode concepts Hirsch wanted to do. Dipper and Mabel learn ‘twin telepathy’ from some creepy twins, and soon regret it.

“Periodic Mabel” Mabel invents her own element for the science fair and Dipper is jealous.

“Only the Clonely/Boyz Crazy” The exact same episode just without Candy and Grenda. Sev’ral Timez is called “ReelBoyzzz” in this version.

“Big Dipper” With surprisingly no tie to Little Dipper, Dipper asks a fortune teller to make him older so he can win Wendy over. But she makes him 22, so he and Mabel have to undo the spell.

“Sweater off Dead” Mabel buys an antique sweater and is possessed by the soul of the granny who last wore it. Stan is terrified by the spirit because she reminds him of his ex-wife Marilyn (Deep Edalyn Clawthorne lore???) so Dipper must “Swexorcize” his sister and save her.

“Teed Off/The Golf War” With no Pacifica, this was originally a Dipper vs Gideon episode- No Lilliputtians, either. Instead, the 13th hole is cursed and traps the cast in a time loop.

Now, changes from the Production Pitch (I’m guessing for when the show was already greenlit and this was a way to brief crew members on what the show would 100% be about)

Stan’s secret (likely the portal) and the journal are now set in stone.

Emphasis on continuity and character development. Nothing gets “reset” by next episode. All plot developments are permanent.

All character names and designs are locked in. Pacifica has now been added, as well as Waddles, Gompers, Lazy Susan, Candy and Grenda, and McGucket (No mention or hint at his past here)

Interesting to note is that there is still zero outright mention of Ford and Bill in this version, even though multiple episodes were seemingly in production at this point.

Manly Dan’s conflict with Wendy from the original pitch is still here. Making it even more mindblowing that we never got it in the show

Blubs and Durland are described as a little more playful instead of mean like in the original pitch.

All episode examples made it into the show with no changes this time. They are Tourist Trapped, Legend of the Gobblewonker, Fight Fighters, Boyz Crazy, and The Land Before Swine.

he doesn't do that. he doesn't wanna go back, but he wants a good, healthy and stable relationship with his family. he even connects the old fireplace in his flat to the floo network, so they can travel with ease.

now you wonder, why doesn't he come back? for the better part, they assumed that Percy thought it was too cramped at the Burrow or that he wanted some adult independance, learning to grow into his adult role.

no, he doesn't want to share it. no, he isn't giving up his TV with good reception and dozens of channels (headcanon; he's a sucker for tv dramas).

the most hilarious thing is when he and Molly argues about why that TV is so much better than her radio ("You can't see the visuals, Mother! And if I have to listen to Celestina Warbeck 24/7 again, I might throw myself into the Thames!") and when Arthur is so interested in the TV ("No, Dad. You can't experiment on my TV! It costed me so much Muggle money, please don't do that!")

and just as he expected and lowkey feared, his siblings starts to mooch on the TV. the younger ones, at least. Bill's busy being husband and father and Charlie hightailed back to Romania cause he misses his baby dragons.

and since this is end of 1990s and early 2000s, there is a slight civil war between his siblings about which channel is the best and yes, they're all cartoon-related.

Ron and Ginny likes Nickelodeon while Fred and George favors Cartoon Network.

Percy likes Disney Channel (and he's a big sucker for spanish telenovelas), tho, and successfully ropes in the others cause there's some good content.

of course, he comes home from work and always finds one or more of his siblings watching TV and he's annoyed at this point because damn it, he can't have ANYTHING for himself (true sibling energy, right there).

Studying Language

Sorry I've been rather inactive, I'm slowly trying to get back into the swing of things!

This is something I’m actually qualified to talk about! I speak three languages fluently, albeit in need of a little practise, and I’m learning one more currently, with one on pause due to time constraints. Nevertheless, I feel pretty confident in my information lol. I’m also a qualified TEFL teacher and have worked abroad teaching English!

Full immersion is the best option. The best thing you can do is spend your time in a country that speaks your target language and force yourself to learn, once you have the “Hello,” “Goodbye,” “Where is the bathroom?” all mastered. In Ireland, there are places called Gaeltachtanna where you go for different lengths of time depending on the course and live in a town speaking exclusively Irish, usually staying with an Irish-speaking family, and going to classes for the language and for games and dances. Of course, that’s not an accesible option for everyone, so you could try going to places like your nearest Asian market, Eastern European market etc, and any areas in your city with a lot of immigrants that might speak your target language. If you have friends who speak that language, natively or just to a better level than you, ask to meet them for coffee and chat as much as you can in your language.

Immersion Part Two: Culture. The people who speak your target language natively do so not just becaus that’s the place in which they exist, but because that’s the place that they live- they get their groceries there, they go to school there, and their language developed because of the day-to-day, as well as unique aspects of their culture such as dances, music, and especially food. Learn about the culture of the country or countries that speak your target language. Eg, fold a paper crane or eat sushi if your language of choice is Japanese, watch an telenovela or go to a salsa class if your goal is to learn Spanish.

Watch TV shows in your Target Language. If you can’t access the locations, and even if you can, watching TV or movies is great because it’ll help you understand the cadences of natural speech that you can’t get from a textbook or formal class situation. Start with movies you might be familiar with like Disney movies (I will die on the hill of “Mother knows Best” from Tangled is better in Spanish). You can also combine your subtitles and audio, using subtitles in your own language at first, and challenge yourself to changing the subtitle.

Similar to the above points, use YouTube or Twitch to your advantage too. That’s probably a lot easier if your target language is English, but there are creators that speak in their non-English native language too. My friend watches a Mexican Minecraft YouTuber called Quackity who has a Minecraft server modded to feature a live translator between Spanish and English, which is very cool.

Read books in your Target Language. We don’t love The Chronicles of the Boy Wizard in this house, but the books are available in 85 languages. The Hobbit also has a tonne including Cornish, Thai, and Ukranian, and Twilight has about 37 translations, just to list a few well-known examples. Learn especially about books written originally in your target language.

Consume Media Originally from the Country or Countries that Speak that Language. Read the Witcher, watch Física o Química, join the dubbed vs subbed anime bloodbath. It can be so beneficial to your understanding of a language to see how those who speak it write it themselves, not just for localisation purposes. It can especially be useful for slang and dialects.

Duolingo and other apps. I’m swiftly approaching my 365 day duolingo streak,* and I fully intend to celebrate with pierogis and a green cake. But there are other options out there, and all of them are great for beginners. I can only speak about Duolingo as its the one I use, but I’m having a lot of fun with the layout of it. However, I do need real practice if I’m going to become actually fluent.

ok so i saw you answered an ask about brazilian telenovela villain Félix like months ago and ...... i just feel like i need to elaborate on hard that novela goes.

so Félix's father César hated Félix his whole life for being gay (and also other unrelated reasons) so one day César sleeps with a prostitute and then immediately hires her to "make a man" out of his son. The prostitute Edith does so happily and actually manages to sleep with Félix and they proceed to enter the most fucked up marriage ever put to film.

The main reason they get married is because Edith is pregnant with their son. Edith then actually falls in love with Félix and he loves her back but in a platonic way. In the first part of the novela (novelas usually start in the past for a couple episodes to set up everything and then skip to the present) Edith finds out Félix threw his niece in a dumpster :/. She also finds out he sleeps with men and threatens to leave, she only doesn't cause she wants his money. He promises to never cheat again.

When she finds out he's cheating again (like 12 years later) she takes pictures of it and shows his entire family to ruin his life. César hates that his son is gay so much that he is willing to pay Edith 2 million reais plus an apartment to stay with his son. This is also when Edith tells César that her son is actually César's, making the kid Félix's half brother. César wants to hide this information really bad.

Eventually when Félix is about to be kicked out of the house by his father (because he stole money from family's hospital) Edith begs to get back together by giving him money. They actually DO get back together and look quite happy. And then immediately Félix finds out that his son isn't his and organizes a family dinner to expose his father and his wife in the most dramatic way possible. This gets Edith kicked out of the house (the whole family lives together, except César who is with his new wife from an unrelated storyline).

To get revenge, Edith tells César that Félix was the one who threw his niece in that dumpster (this was a mistery for 12 years) and César organizes a family reunion to expose Félix. That is what leads to Félix becoming poor (his mom forces him to quit his job and kicks him out of the house) and selling hot dogs. No one reports him to the police because they don't want the drama.

Also in brazilian novelas, each couple or character gets their own theme song that plays in their scenes, so every time Edith and Félix fuck Lana Del Rey's Summertime Sadness plays in the background

I forgot all about this dude tbh, but my mom went INSANE over the plot descriptions I gave her. She was like "THIS WAS ON TV??" like yeah. Yeah, it was. And now I'm reading this plot description and thinking, wow, this almost reminds me of a plot that would be on hit American Disney-affiliated drama television series Once Upon A Time

Some of these make sense, some are just nonsensical but the vibe fits. If your boy didn’t make it on the list, I’ll make a part 2. 

Darien: You like solid and safe classics, like true vanilla ice cream or black evening gowns.

King Kurog: No, you can’t fix him. Yes, we all wish we could. You probably saw those cartoons/shows as a kid where someone chains themselves to a tree to save the forest from becoming a parking lot or something and you decided you were going to do that specific thing. It hasn’t happened yet.

Chief Bazrag: You’re a people pleaser. The harder they are to please, the more satisfying when you win them over. You also want to be held, and honestly you deserve to be held.

Any of the Daedric Princes: You saw the red flags, but red is your favorite color.

Rigurt the Brash: To say you like himbos is a given, but I also think you’re the type to break too easily when someone gives you puppy-dog eyes.

So, I would like to share a little about my background as a fan of fantastic fiction trying to reconcile escapism with socio-political analysis:

I grew up with TV, and what I watched was generally a mix of telenovelas and animated movies from Disney and Pixar VHS, and DVDs from Dreamworks, comedy cartoons and live action TV Shows like Spongebob Squarepants, El Chavo del Ocho, The Simpsons and Dinosaurs, educational cartoons such as The Triplets, Madeline and Seven Little Monsters.

My closest family, especially my mother, grandmother and uncle, were readers, and they tried to encourage me to read books, and also to think more deeply about what I watched, beyond simple entertainment.

This was influenced by the fact that they studied at a public university and were involved in discussions of social issues such as quotas and student movements.

When I was growing up, learning to use the internet, I discovered pages and videos of people who delved into this intersection of pop culture and political and social issues, absorbing a lot of things they said, to the point that even my family said: "Take it easy, sometimes it's good to take a break and just enjoy."

After a while, especially in college, I started to filter out what was a comment just to cause controversy, a repetitive joke and what was really an analysis made in good faith, and thus form my own opinions. I used to identify as a centrist and vote white until 2016, when the coup against Dilma and Trump's election took place.

These were the situations in which I realized that being politically neutral was just acting cynical and apathetic while fascism resurfaced. And being a target as a woman, from the Northeast, from a black, poor family and a student at a public school and university, I could no longer afford to press the white button.

"Whoever stays too up the wall falls to the right" as once said the brazilian actor and director Antônio Abujamra.

So I started to identify myself as someone on the left I know that there are problems such as antisemitism and lgtphobia internalized by parts of the left (the brazilian party PCO for example is a joke).

But I live in a different reality than other countries: In Brazil, simply wanting Agrarian Reform and teaching about LGBTs and other religions besides Christianity is considered "Extremist" by the Right.

I can't live in Brazil, which suffered under Bolsonaro, and not be left-wing.
