U.K. orders Apple to let it spy on users’ encrypted accounts

Security officials in the United Kingdom have demanded that Apple create a back door allowing them to retrieve all the content any Apple user worldwide has uploaded to the cloud, people familiar with the matter told The Washington Post.

The British government’s undisclosed order, issued last month, requires blanket capability to view fully encrypted material, not merely assistance in cracking a specific account, and has no known precedent in major democracies. Its application would mark a significant defeat for tech companies in their decades-long battle to avoid being wielded as government tools against their users, the people said, speaking under the condition of anonymity to discuss legally and politically sensitive issues.

Rather than break the security promises it made to its users everywhere, Apple is likely to stop offering encrypted storage in the U.K., the people said. Yet that concession would not fulfill the U.K. demand for backdoor access to the service in other countries, including the United States.

The office of the Home Secretary has served Apple with a document called a technical capability notice, ordering it to provide access under the sweeping U.K. Investigatory Powers Act of 2016, which authorizes law enforcement to compel assistance from companies when needed to collect evidence, the people said.

The law, known by critics as the Snoopers’ Charter, makes it a criminal offense to reveal that the government has even made such a demand. An Apple spokesman declined to comment.

Apple can appeal the U.K. capability notice to a secret technical panel, which would consider arguments about the expense of the requirement, and to a judge who would weigh whether the request was in proportion to the government’s needs. But the law does not permit Apple to delay complying during an appeal.

In March, when the company was on notice that such a requirement might be coming, it told Parliament: “There is no reason why the U.K. [government] should have the authority to decide for citizens of the world whether they can avail themselves of the proven security benefits that flow from end-to-end encryption.”

♡ König's usual hiding place is easy and straightforward: His room. He'll ask you to meet him there or send someone to tell you to go there to retrieve some tasks or review documents with him. You'll have to go (begrudgingly), and he enjoys wasting your precious time by going on awkward yet never-ending talks. Even when you try to shift the conversation back to work, he still asks you about your favorite food, where you'd like to travel, and what you think of x, y, and z. It's tiring and unnecessary, and it adds double the time once he gets to the part where he actually reviews duties and operations with you. But you are untouchable as long as you are in his vicinity. No one gets past the door when König is having alone time with you.

♡ Now, sadly, he can't stay with you all the time. So he assigns you tasks! Fun... meaningless tasks. Sometimes he locks you in an office for that, returning to let you out a while later. Other times, he sends you across the whole base on a goose hunt for something he needs. He once assigned you to count ammunition... well, every bullet you could find. On a military base. You almost cried. But as long as only he knows where you are, König reached his goal and made it harder for anyone else to find you.

♡ In certain circumstances, he hides with you. And it's by far the worst thing. You don't like the closeness to him in his room? Tough luck. You two sat silently in a car once for hours in complete darkness just so König could make sure no one would snatch you from him at night. One time, you were doing inventory and unexpectedly got pulled into a container for an hour, with König refusing to let you go back to work just because he saw some suspicious activity that he didn't want to disclose to you in any way or form (he was really missing you that day).

♡ Despite having a high rank, his hiding shenanigans are occasionally overwritten by someone even higher on the list, and it's hell come true. König will be anxious, asking why you don't want to stay with him or why you are no longer listening to him despite you just doing your job. He invades every mission you are sent on, going berserk back at base if he isn't allowed to. You can watch him get angry, bluffing and shoving everyone in the base aside as he pouts and freaks out that your security is endangered, and he is watching you like a hawk constantly, just appearing wherever you go and not saying anything. He knows you must fulfill your orders, but he's not happy about it, and König will let you feel it.

♡ Fun fact: Ghost is usually close by when he's not on active duty. He hides in the shadows around you and even gets a thrill from invading König's hideouts with you. Even though König is trying so hard, Ghost will find you. But like a good hunter, he waits for the right moment, always keeping the colonel and you on your feet. You never notice that he's always right there with you until it's already too late.

Update to my situation. So I have been living at my dad's for some weeks now. There's been a lot of adjusting, trust needing to be rebuilt, habits needing to be broken. I'm having an ok time, but there are still a lot of things bothering me. After fleeing most of my personal possessions are gone. The lease is no longer in my name (hilariously, it's now in my Ex-roommates name. ISN'T THAT SO FUNNY) and any hopes at getting my deposit back are slashed. There are several things I need to replace. I don't feel safe returning to that apartment to retrieve them.

Not only that but I left a Lot of important documents like my birth certificate and SSN which I inexplicably could not locate when I looked for them, as well as storage devices and phones. I found that my Facebook was accessed from a phone I'm no longer in possession of and my emails continue to be compromised. It feels like a hopeless situation and I've been deterred/discouraged from seeking legal recourse. I feel lost. Years and years of artwork are out of my hands. My equipment is at the apartment and who knows if it hasn't been scrapped or sold. I know I shouldnt mourn material things but the way my sense of security, my own private sanctum is no longer a place I can return to, affects me deeply. Someone impersonating my father has been adding me on Facebook over multiple duplicate accounts and she lied about contacting my family. Compromising video has been sent to my dad and stepmom. They've been gracious but it's still humiliating and deeply disturbing that this happened to me. I don't feel I deserve this.

I received my final gas bill and the amount is for $425. If I ever hope to rent again here, I have to pay this. My former landlord is not communicating with me in a timely fashion. I'm trying to get on SSI and hopefully return to a sense of normalcy and independence. I've been seeking stability after the many traumas and changes I've had to face. it's honestly a challenge to find motivation right now and I'm masking a lot of my pain. I feel alone.

Ancient Warship’s Bronze Battering Ram Sunk During a Battle Between Rome and Carthage Found

Found near the Aegadian Islands, just west of Sicily, the bronze rostrum played a role in the last battle of the First Punic War, which ended in 241 B.C.E.

In 241 B.C.E., two empires faced off in a naval clash off the coast of Sicily. By then, Rome and Carthage had been fighting for more than two decades. Rome’s victory in the skirmish, officially called the Battle of the Aegates, brought an end to the First Punic War, the initial conflict in a series of wars between the two ancient powers.

Now, explorers have recovered a piece of that final battle: the bronze battering ram of an ancient warship. According to a statement from Sicily’s Superintendence of the Sea, the ram was found on the seafloor off the western coast of the Mediterranean island, at a depth of around 260 feet. To retrieve the artifact, the team used deep-water submarines from the Society for Documentation of Submerged Sites (SDSS) and the oceanographic research vessel Hercules.

The seabed off the Aegadian Islands “is always a valuable source of information to add further knowledge about the naval battle between the Roman and Carthaginian fleets,” Regional Councilor for Cultural Heritage Francesco Paolo Scarpinato tells Finestre sull’Arte. He adds that the find is yet another confirmation of the work of the late archaeologist Sebastiano Tusa, who spearheaded exploration of the seabed as the site of the 241 battle after a separate ram, also known as a rostrum, was first found there in the early 2000s. In the two decades since, researchers have recovered at least 25 rams from the seabed.

At the time of the Battle of the Aegates, Rome and Carthage had been at war for 23 years, fighting for dominance in the Mediterranean. As the Greek historian Polybius later wrote, the Romans sank 50 Carthaginian ships and captured another 70 along with their crews, taking nearly 10,000 sailors prisoner during the naval battle. Rome forced Carthage to surrender. But the fragile peace was short-lived: Over the next century, Rome would go on to fight a second and third war against the Punic people, winning each time.

“It was very costly, both in terms of human life and economically,” Francesca Oliveri, an archaeologist at the superintendence, told BBC News’ Alessia Franco and David Robson in 2022. “In the last phase, Rome even had to ask for a loan from the most well-to-do families to arm the fleet and build new boats.”

The recently discovered ram has been brought to Favignana, one of the Aegadian Islands, for further study. Though its features are difficult to make out because the object is covered in marine life, researchers have been able to discern a decoration on its front: a relief depicting a Montefortino-style Roman helmet decorated with three feathers.

The battering ram adds to the wealth of war relics found on the seabed, which also include 30 Roman soldiers’ Montefortino helmets, two swords, coins and many clay amphorae (large storage jars).

According to the SDSS, rams were the most important naval weapons of their time. They were placed on the bows of warships at water level so that sailors could crash their boats into enemy vessels, damaging and sinking them. The plethora of rams scattered on the seabed are testaments to the weapons’ effectiveness in ancient battle.

“We are finding so many things that help to illustrate a little better the world of the third century [B.C.E.],” Oliveri told BBC News in 2022. “It’s the first site of a naval battle, in the world, that has been scientifically documented like this, and it will continue to be documented—because the area of interest is very large. … It will take at least another 20 years to explore it fully.”

TSAC: Greetings! My name is Three Stars Above Clouds. I am Director of the Zenith Stellar Observatory Consortium and Lead Archivist of the Zenith Data Archives.

I have a question for Missing Link of Chain. It is to my understanding that you have curated quite an impressive collection of historical records, and I was curious to learn more about your archival methods.

I maintain a large archive of my own, primarily used to store observational and scientific data. My own archives are primarily data pearl-based; this storage method allows large data payloads from my telescopes to be moved relatively quickly, and also facilitates fast data read/write speeds. However this method of data archival has its limits- for instance it is quite inefficient in the storage of high-resolution qualia, which tends to rapidly exceed normal data pearl memory limits.

I am eager to learn about your own data storage techniques, given the contrast between our respective duties. What kind of information do you maintain in your own archives, and how is it stored? Do you have any particular preferences when it comes to data organization? Are you aided by scholars in the curation of your archives? Do you have any records on hand that you are willing to share?

Hello TSAC! I'd be very happy to answer all your questions, from one archival iterator to another.

About my archival methods- I think you'll find it apparent I don't use many pearls. They fade over time if not cared for properly, and I store far too much data to be stored in a pearl network. Besides, they're particularly easy for me to lose...

Rather, I've taken a long-term storage method that uses purposed organisms to store massive amounts of data in the form of qualia, text, images, audio, and so on. You may even recognize similar organisms around many citadels, storing the memories of those who've ascended. These neural amalgams are stored and grown in large biometal and glass buildings atop my can, towering about as tall as any city, and sprawling even wider. It can be either horrifying or beautiful depending on your tastes. Or neither, if you're me.

This, of course has upsides and downsides. The upside is that this storage method lasts for a very, very long time. However, retrieving the data again is not as optimized. This is not a problem for me, as much of what I store is... rather useless anyways.

Which is what my main job is. Anybody can store data in some neural meat. But that data is scrambled and unorganized, I make sure that everything is properly formatted and easy to find again through a system of complex tags and IDs identified to every segment of data and- actually I'll save that explanation for another time.

My time is more spent organizing rather than going out to find documents myself. Over 99% of the data stored in my archives have been donated to me by scholars, volunteers, companies, and other iterators!

Normally, this would be an easy task. Even easier for me, as I've been designed with a larger processing strata and memory conflux in order to run more parallel processes, but even still, I estimate I'd collapse before I fulled tagged, ID'd, and sorted everything.

Luckily there's a priority system for donated data so I'd get through all the actually useful documents first.

I hope this may satisfy some of your curiosities.

[INCIDENT LOG - 2 / 11 / 2XXX - PETRICHOR SYSTEM] Item: Ceremonial Dagger Reporter Details: Cynthia Blaire, UES Safe Travels An ancient curved dagger, wicked sharp and carries the scent of sulfur. According to camera footage, the urge to hold the weapon is almost impossible to resist. Once held, it seems like the individual's actions are hardly their own, influencing them to spill blood in the name of a being named "N'kuhana". This item was retrieved from the wetlands of Petrichor V and brought aboard for further study. Horrible idea.

Incident: The Captain of the UES Safe Travels had encountered the dagger in storage during a routine cargo inspection. On camera footage, he seemed to "hear" something and approached the specific containment of the dagger - upon holding the weapon, his mental state appeared to deteriorate quickly into anger and paranoia - appearing to forget the very identities of the members of the ship. The dagger had influenced the captain to act upon uncharacteristic behaviours, including attempting to poison, injure and kill those around him. Only when the dagger was removed from his person, did he return to normal. The weapon has been "taken care of" by the symbiotic lifeform known as Rex - with the being unable to hear or feel any influence from the dagger, rendering it useless. Further updates will be documented upon this log. I have faith in Rex, but I will make some form of contingency plan. Just in case.

As of now, the captain is recovering in the medical bay, with others and myself keeping a careful watch in case the dagger has possible lasting effects on his psyche. Further research on "N'kuhana" is needed.

Providence- Providence was there, he stopped the insanity. But- I can't- what if documenting his name will result in some form of cognitohazard? Maybe that.. information, would best be kept with those upon the ship, rather than documented in public logs.

I suppose Providence will be dealt with later.
