MVF-X08 Eclipse Gundam

This is only my fifth Master Grade, and it was definitely a design worth giving the MG treatment. The other MGs I’ve built all have or feel like they could be High Grades, but the Eclipse is a design that doesn’t feel possible as an HG or possibly even an RG. The MA Mode transformation it so complicated that I can’t imagine how they’d pull it off at a smaller size without omitting it entirely. But how does it stack up as a model kit?

The Good: This was a very complex build, with a lot of intricate moving parts in areas you wouldn’t expect, like the shoulders or lower legs. It might have been a little too complex at a few moments, but it was a large kit that felt worthy of its price tag, which I feel not every big kit does.

Because of the sheer amount of moving parts, posability is a little strange, but it still has a wide range. Its accessory pool is small, but very cool, with its shield generator effect parts, and beam rifles that store its beam sabers inside them.

Lastly, the transformation is crazy. The amount of moving parts throughout this kit just to get this high-speed flight mode perfect is ridiculous.

The Bad: But that complexity is just as frustrating as it is impressive. You have to compress the forelegs, but it took me several minutes to get that single motion to work, and the amount of small movements in places like the shoulders or waist to get things at just the right angle, slightly off where it was originally, is very confusing. The MA Mode, while a nice inclusion, is not a selling point, and I will likely never transform it again unless I get another MG with and MA Mode to compare.

The Details: As Master Grades already have good color separation, there wasn’t really any need to do anything besides panel lining. I think I painted the eyes green? But even looking at the kit on the shelf behind me, I can’t tell.

Overall, it’s a very fun kit to build, with its main issue being the complexity of the MA Mode, and how some of that engineering affects the base design. Even with that, I still say it’s worth its price, but I don’t think I’ll be getting Reactor 2. I might grab a backpack, though, if I can easily find one.

In a Gundam au, Sun and Moon should pilot the Stargazer.

I know there's Gundam Helios, Moon Gundam, and Eclipse Gundam and probably more sun/moon themed mobile suits I'm unaware of, but Stargazer:

had two pilots, Sol Lune L'ange and Selene McGriff co-piloting (if that ain't literally Sun and Moon idk what is)

can swap out the cockpit with the Stargazer A.I. unit (if that ain't Eclipse idk what is)

wasn't made for combat but can fight if it had to (was made for peaceful means but at some point have been used to hurt)

and isn't a plastic model kit in-universe (looking at Helios and Lunagazer)

Also, the aesthetic of Voiture Lumiere looking like a sun, and when split, like two crescent moons.

there's probably other mobile suits that suits (heh) them more but I just vibe with Stargazer alright?

Esoteric+Divine Composite: Suletta

Suletta's position as an amalgamation/twist on Miranda and Caliban is obvious along with Utena. But what are some of the lesser known? She's a character shaped with symbology ranging from norse and greek myth to alchemy. Fenrisulfr, Hercules, Hermes/Mercury, and the Red King.

Fenrir

I've already broken this down a bit in a previous analysis, and in light of the finale, she finally fulfills the Ragnarok prophecy.

The freed wolf who eclipses the 'sun', heralding an end to the Gods(Benerit and SAL)

And her method of devouring Odin Miorine is consuming her in holy matrimony as the new cycle of the world is born.

Hercules

This one might be a surprise, but it's true. Suletta is undeniably coded with Heracles/Hercules symbolism, beginning with his 12 labors. In the very first episode of GWitch, she slew the invincible Nemean Lion and 'skinned' his coat

And her final labor is the subjugation of Cerberus, the multi-headed dog of the underworld.

Take note, before Hercules descends and encounters Cerberus, he's inducted into the cult of Demeter and Persephone. Notrette as Anesidora is revealed to be our Demeter, chthonic goddess of agriculture. And prior to this battle, Suletta speaks with the Persephone of our tale, inducting her within the mysteries.

You can draw other parallels between the various herculean labors and Suletta's duels. Such as the Grassley battles echoing that of the Hydra or Elan/Peil as the man-eating Stymphalian birds.

Suletta's godlike strength suddenly doesn't seem like an accident, does it?

So why was this done, other than for fun symbolism? The answer all boils down to Hermeticism, as it often seems to. Specifically this painting of Hercules, called Allegory of Wisdom and Strength

I'm unsure if it's common to interpret this image as another symbol of As Above, So Below but it's clear to me Okouchi has. We have Hercules focused on earthly matters while the greek personification of wisdom, Sophia, is focused heavenward. The light of enlightenment crowns her brow. Both are in frame and not in conflict; As Above, So Below. Coincidentally (or not) Sophia is one possible ciphered translation for Baphomet; a blatant esoteric symbol of perfect unity.

Mercury/Hermes

This is of course obvious considering its in her name, but there's one mythological parallel I want to highlight. The tale of Persephone/Kore. It was Hermes who descended into the underworld and retrieved the 'defiled' Persephone, escorting her safely above and reuniting her with her mother

Suddenly, Shaddiq's dramatic comment about Miorine's defilement doesn't seem so off-color. They were intentionally harking to Persephone Mio who was taken by Hades, Prospera here.

The Red King

I've already discussed this a bit here, but let's recap. Suletta is derived from Soletta. Her signifying colors are Red and Gold as Holder, both key to the Red King. She was 'eaten' by a lion (aqua regia solution) before being reborn, her metaphorical sun blackened with despair (dissolving).

All of it culminating into a Great Work, banishing gundams, defeating SAL, and saving Eri; her Filius philosophorum (Philosopher's Child) All miracles.

Oh and finally married her White Queen ofc, though their union was cemented with a tomato by then. In GWitch's version of Theogony Hermes wed Persephone, accomplished the 12 herculean labors, created a philosopher's stone, and completed Ragnarok

Note: Considering the proper name of Fenrir, Fenrisulfr, Okouchi might've been trying to be cute. Sulfur girl indeed

(Honmei + Idia) outside, in the igniyde backyard (do they even have one) there is a super massive death robot made entirely out of chocolate. There is a little note at its feet saying ‘For Idia. If you say ‘Death Lazers’ it’ll shoot chocolate death lazers! From me, your secret admirer!’

... I mean, I’m sure the area outside of the Ignihyde dorm building can count, right?

GET IN THE GUNDAM, IDIA

Sweet on You.

Reports of a strange structure appearing in front of Ignihyde had been steadily trickling in since the morning. Eventually, the sightings culminated in mob students crowding at their dorm leader's door and hauling him away from his desktop to deal with the issue. Thrusted into the yard (by those traitors, Idia bitterly thought), he winced into the blinding sun.

Or rather, he would have, were it not for the massive structure blocking out the light.

It was several stories tall, eclipsing even the dorm building with its regal form. Constructed with and plated in tempered panes of chocolate, it took on the shape of a winged equine—a pegasus. Sleep, sharp, and powerful.

Idia recoiled in shock.

Wh-What's with this flashy Trojan Horse of a statue?! Who would even make something like this—and worse yet, then dump it on someone’s front lawn to deal with?!

“Urgh…” He shivered, sinking into the temporary comfort of his jacket. “I-I guess I have no choice in this. I’d better get rid of it before it melts and seeps into all our tech…”

Idia returned to the pegasus, his brain already set to running the rough calculations. Thinking, planning.

Something of this size will be impossible for the regular cleaning robots to clean up. I’ll have to put together something larger, but even if I just take one the basic models to modify and scale up, I’ll need to collect the right parts…

His eyes traced the pegasus, beginning with the tip of its extended wings and ending at the base of its front hooves. Numbers and estimations were still buzzing in his mind when he noticed the piece of paper tucked under one horseshoe. Trash, Idia suspected. Another problem for him.

Groaning, he crouched down to pick it up. There were words scrawled on it, and—Idia squinted hard—it was a message for him?

"... This is a 'super massive death robot'? And it shoots 'chocolate death lasers'?" He scoffed at the idea. As if this gaudy thing's functional. The chocolate would melt from the heat of the circuits and other electrical units powering up.

But perhaps even more ludicrous than the thought of a horse robot meant for combat, more ridiculous than shooting chocolate beams, was the notion that they had come from a secret admirer. Idia's pale complexion heated and colored with embarrassment.

Y-Yeah right... I'll bet this is just someone's idea of a cruel joke. There's no way any of that's true. Haha, guys, real hilarious, making fun of the shut-in otaku on Single Awareness Day.

Crumpling the paper into a ball, Idia casually tossed it back at the ground.

Whrrrrrrr...

"... Huh? What's that... sound..."

Idia looked up and immediately paled.

The eyes of the pegasus had started to glow crimson, and the air around it had grown thick and heavy—crackling with magic. Idia whipped around, scrambling to flee.

But too late.

A bright light erupted from the robot’s mouth, engulfing him in a blazingly hot ray. Weight collected on him, and within seconds Idia was crushed by a resounding force. He fell to the ground in a pathetically shrieking heap, flailing his arms to grasp at an escape.

He found something and held tight to it, only for his fingers to come away sticky and sweet.

“This is…”

… Chocolate?

Idia glanced around him. Chocolate had magically manifested as far as the eye could see, burying him in a pile of sugar, fat, and cacao. It was practically death by chocolate.

“I-Impossible!!” he sputtered, gaping up at the equine monstrosity. "It... It shouldn't be operational! It shouldn't work! It can't work...!!"

Yet it had.

Realization set in, slow and horrifying. A fervent fire had stoked beneath his skin, fanning out across every last inch of him.

In spite of that, an anxious grin started to form on his mouth.

"Hi... hihihihi..."

Idia covered his burning face and let himself melt into the pile of chocolate. His heart felt like it was on overdrive, all of its circuits firing at once and frying his system. He didn't care if he would turn it into a sticky puddle, didn't care if his cackling was overheard.

Because maybe there was hope for him after all. A possibility to be discovered in the mountain of impossibilities, love for someone who was thought to be loveless.

A secret admirer for him.

I hope everyone was able to see the eclipse today and didn't burn your eyeballs out doing so! I didn't have any glasses, but our nice neighbor let us borrow hers for a bit so we could see it, which was very nice and cool. 💖

Anyway, I wanted to post some haul pictures from the toy show I went to last weekend with my friends. It was my first time going and I had an ABSOLUTE blast (and spent too much money, but we won't talk about that loool).

1. A Geri Halliwell doll that I am SO pumped about!!! Ginger will forever be my favorite Spice Girl, and I had this doll as a kid but lost her somewhere along the way (i.e. my grandma probably threw her away when I wasn't around 🥲) so I'm thrilled to have her back! I'll take her out of the box someday but right now I'm just enjoying her as is, oh Kmart price tag and all. 💖 Also the little doll of herself kills me. 😭🥰💞

2. A little balding Sailor Uranus. She's so adorable, and Uranus is one of my all time favorite scouts, so it was destiny. Her side shave just makes her unique. 🥰

3. A Scully Barbie, 90s edition. I've wanted her for ages but never took the plunge, so when I found her for a great price at the show she had to come home to me. 😎 Her tiny badge and little cross necklace are perfection-all her accessories are so well made. I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for a Mulder to bring home in the future. 💞

4. A Kraft Mac and Cheese Barbie. I love her garish, brand whore outfit. Also her face is too cute, 90s Barbies were supreme IMHO.

5. A Dakin (Daken?) Dream Doll. I couldn't leave and come back without some weird little doll from the 60's 🤗 I love how pudge she is. She's def a mob boss or something. Her power is undeniable.

6. The COOLEST Bratz outfit of all time. The little guns are so damn cute, I love it so much. 💖 And a cool opalescent Gundam because it was too cute to ignore and wanted to pay homage to one of my best friends who has hella cool Gundams we will someday build together maybe. 👯‍♀️

7. Some unnerving, blinky ponies. I'm obsessed and want all the blinking ones. I love how often their eyes get caught and make them look drunk. The neon pink one is apparently named 'Shady'. Perfect. Love that for her.

8. Tiny, footless Chloe. I got her because she came with the Bratz outfit, but I still love her. She gossips with all the other girlies now, they adore her. 💖 (Also I know it's dusty AF up there, I'm a mess ok??? Mind your business loool)

I can't wait for next year!!! 💖

Let us begin!

Not text, but in the opening scene, Lilique is told by Aliya that she'll "have trouble with men" in the near future during their divination session. This is foretelling how Renee will destroy her MS in the Grassley duel because she rejected John Van Simmon's lunch invitation.

During Miorine's impromptu enlisting of Earth House to help run GUND-ARM, we see the spray painted sign that Miorine and Suletta made beforehand leaning outside the door. Given that they definitely didn't make the sign at Earth House, I like to imagine that they made the sign, and Miorine was like:

"This is the worst. Suletta, help me carry this sign to Earth House."

S: "W-why, Miorine-san?"

M: "They're going to be working at the company so I'll just have them make a better sign."

S: "Oh, did you ask them?"

M: "Not yet."

S: ????????????????????????????

During this scene where Martin and Ojelo are talking, we get a look into the betting program he and Nuno are always using, and we get to see the top 10 ranked duelists at Asticassia at the time of this episode.

Of special note: Shaddiq is currently at rank 1, and due to the gray up arrow next to his rank, we can see this is a recent change in his rank. But considering that he doesn't duel very often, (at this point he currently has 7 wins and 0 losses) we can probably assume this is because Suletta has knocked both Guel and Elan from the top spots, leaving him alone at the top. His Odds are at 1.3

Suletta is currently at Rank 2, and we can also see by the gray arrow that this is a recent promotion. She probably rose up after defeating Elan. Her odds are 1.9.

Elan is Rank 3, and the red down arrow means he's recently been demoted, presumably after losing to Suletta. His odds are 2.7

Guel, surprisingly, is still rank 4 with a 3.4. Because he's the only pilot at the school to have won a double digit number of duels, his Win - Loss ratio is still presumably one of the best, even with 2 official losses.

Sabina is rank 5, with a 6.9. She's not only the second highest ranked pilot in Grassley House, but is the 4th best among all the other members of the main 3 houses. Even at that, her rank is 6.9, 3.5 points below Guel's. It really goes to show the gulf between the best pilots and the VERY best pilots at Asticassia.

Lauda is rank 7, with a 9.1. Still top 10, but he's eclipsed by Guel even at his lowest. It's nice to see proof pre-Schwarzette that Lauda can hold his own, and it gives more context to his statement that "[With a Gundam's power], he's a match for his brother." He's probably never beaten Guel in a duel, and with the difference in their results, he's probably never come close, either. On some level, he probably resents him for that.

Renee is rank 10, with odds of 13.3. We don't learn much about Renee, but we know now that she's the 3rd highest ranked pilot within Grassley, underneath Sabina and Shaddiq, but the gulf is large.

I don't think there's any way in hell to figure out how the odds are calculated, (I've tried.) but we know that the lower the odds, the higher your rank.

Because the names are color coded, we can actually see how many members of each house are in the top ten. Grassley - Shaddiq, Sabina, Renee (3/10) - 30% Peil - Elan (1/10) - 10% Jeturk - Guel, Lauda, Ragnar (3/10) - 30% Earth - Suletta (1/10) - 10% Unknown House - Olta, Jonas (2/10) - 20% (These two names are color coded the same, so I'll assume they're in the same house, as 'unhoused' students have the standard blue color coding : e.g Miorine)

Okay, we're ALMOST done here, but, because Ojelo often says the odds of a duel out loud during it, we can actually track the odds of Guel, Elan, and Suletta up to this point. (Ojelo always says the odds in terms of Person he's betting on's odds - Opponent's odds.)

This is the Recording System that opens when Prospera sends her all of Aerial's past data. The screen is similar to the one that appears when Eri is speaking to Lfrith, but other than that there's not much info that can be gleaned here.

Not text, but I really how during the scene where Suletta asks Prospera why she lied to her, and Prospera continues to lie to her about why, Suletta's face is drawn in a way that's uncomfortable to look at once she falls for her manipulation.

This scene is also where Prospera tells her outright that Gundams are safe, and for nearly the entire rest of the series, Suletta repeats this, even when faced with direct evidence to the contrary because she wholeheartedly believes her mother would never lie to her for no reason.

Okay okay FINAL non text thing I PROMMY, but this scene implies that at some point, Suletta spoke with Shaddiq about the situation with her mom for at least a little bit at some point. I wish we got to see that.

Not text (sorry i lied) but I think it's interesting that the video Miorine watches of her father's speech is a secondhand recording and not an actual recording of the event.

Some closer looks at the editing software used to create the PR video. The name of the raw video file is GUND-ARMInc.PV01, and the placeholder text for the GUND-ARM Inc. Logo is GUND-ARMInc.PV02.

Also all of the silly visual effects like the hearts and musical notes make sense when you realize they had Suletta edit the actual video.

We can actually see Till's rough sketch of the GUND-ARM logo on his tablet screen, complete with construction lines. That's why they have to use a placeholder in the editing software, it's not complete yet.

When Miorine chooses the data files to cast to the screen, the 3 video files are named GUND CARDO NABO MS

The files are dated by year, so all of these files were recorded in A.S. 101.

Here is all of the editing (blessings) in the GUND-ARM PR Video 1. When Suletta walks into frame, the video is covered in a filter that makes hearts and stars appear on the screen. When the video cuts the first time, the filter changes to one that makes various musical notes appear on the screen. Then when it cuts again the filter is gone. 2. Suletta walks into frame, and then tries to correct her position, and then it cuts back to a shot of her in the original spot she was standing in. 3. Aerial is horribly keyed into the shot, and you can see bits of the green screen behind it. Tiko also walks in front of it and they didn't know how to edit him out. 4. When they begin the dance, each step cuts to a later time of day and Suletta looks noticeably more exhausted, which means they kept having to re-record it. 5. They kept having to edit Aerial's arms to make the dance moves work.

And they stretch them.

I like that Prospera laughs at the video, because for her, it's probably like watching her daughters having fun and playing together.

The food for the party that Suletta and Miorine are bringing are from ASTICASSIA FOODS.

Happy 25th anniversary Turn A Gundam

A new interview with the Berserk movies’ writer (Ichiro Okouchi) just came out today!

There’s a lot of cool info there; from his thoughts of the mercilessness of the Eclipse sequence to travelling around France to scout for inspirational locations for the film.

On Guts and Griffith, Okouchi said Guts and Griffith’s “buddy” dynamic inspired how he wrote the dynamics of Lelouch and Suzaku in Code Geass, and of Akira and Ryo in Devilman Crybaby… And it’s now influencing his work for Gundam: The Witch from Mercury.

I found this quote especially interesting:

そういった二人が、出会い、近づき、離れ、焦がれ……そういうドラマを描いていくのがきっと好きなんでしょうね。

“I guess I like depicting the drama of [two people] encountering each other, growing closer, moving apart, and yearning for each other.”

Erza : Oh yes, I guess that this explains a lot of why was I born on Gundam Day. Yeah, that figures much on why there was ever a Gundam Day.

Relena : I do share the same as yours, but we all share the birthday, it's totally a win for us.

Erza : I can't believe that after all of that Cheesecake Factory, we finally get to celebrate our birthdays at this long table...

Jean : Hey, everybody! Glad that you finally made it to our birthday party!

Erza : This is literally not my idea of how did we all share the day of birth on these occasions with the Gundam anniversary, not my day, of saving mortality of being the girlboss cause anyone in this universe will rue the day!

Yona : Oi! Just in time to open our birthday presents. But first, we gotta say that happy birthday to all of us and this is the day we all started on this occasion!

Erza : Yo, Yona! You gotta have a cool birthday you know, I know that we all share the same birthdays but we needed to all celebrate our birthdays and that was the day, we needed something for more than just to celebrate this special day for us!

Yona : I know, right!? It's super cool to have sharing the same birth as you do! You gotta understand the context of being the luckiest girl you wanted to understand and I have no talent of being the luckiest person ever!

Relena : Suletta Mercury! Your stupid robot just ruined the entire cake for all of us! What's with this idiot robot ruining our birthday cake!?

Mui : Yeah, what's the big idea of ruining a good birthday!?

Yona : Can't you do anything right, you big bucket of bolts!?

Suletta : Hey, guys! Look! I did what I had to do something, I only wanted Gundam to have big anniversary cake and that is what we simply did on exactly did with these occasions soon as possible. We get to eat our cake fellas?

Mui : Oh you are so dead to us.

Erza : Oh...So I get it now. Everyone shares the same birthday while we celebrate the anniversary of a giant robot. That all makes sense now.

Setsuna : Well, you had your problems on getting that birthday cake. We brought all food from the Cheesecake factory, wanna go for another round, birthday girl?
