Crossover Shenanigans: Korrasami and Supercorp
Korra and Asami stand in front of a strange purple portal. Korra: You know, I'm a little relieved I'm not the reason for this portal for once. Asami: True. Mako: I don't think it's safe to mess with it. Maybe stay here? Asami: How will we be able to determine where it goes? The best way to test a hypothesis is through an experiment. *proceeds to tie the rope around her and Korra's waist and then spools it around hte pulley-crank system she's built. It's several hundred meters of rope* So all you two have to do is keep an eye on this. If the rope is tugged three times, then crank us back. Bolin: *digs into his bag of cookies* Easy enough. Mako: *sighs dramatically* Don't yell at me when this goes badly! Korra gives him a thumbs up, takes Asami's hand, and enters the violet portal. A brief moment of weird stomach-churning nausea hits them, and then they enter a large white room. Two people stand behind a counter with strange devices that Korra and Asami have never seen before. Asami: Wow. That looks like a fancy typewriter. *Points to the keyboard with a strange square attached to it, that looks like a very thin mover screen.* Brunette-and-very-pretty-woman: Who the hell are you two? Korra: Hey! That's not very nice! We're explorers. Investigating the new portal. I'm Avatar Korra. *jerks her thumb at Asami* and this is my super awesome girlfriend Asami Sato. Asami: *blushes* Do you have to introduce me like that every time? Tall-muscular-blonde: Oh, hey! Great to meet you! I'm Kara Danvers, and this is Lena Luthor! *grins and holds out her hand* Asami stares at it for a long moment. Korra rolls her eyes and shakes Kara's hand. Asami bows instead. Lena: Okay, so nice to meet you, now go back through so I can shut this down... Asami: Wait, you made this? How did you make it so small? When Korra made a spirit portal, she energybended a massive explosion, which ripped open the fabric of reality... Lena: What is energybending? Asami: Oh, it's something only the Avatar can do. She manipulates energy in people or the environment. Lena: So she manipulated a massive explosion to create a portal? That seems a very destructive way. *gestures to the portal behind Asami* I built this using Nth metal, magnetic coils, and... Asami: *whips out a notebook from her jacket* What is Nth Metal? And magnetic coils? That's actually a brilliant idea. I've been experimenting with those lately. . .
Kara and Korra watch as the pair dive into an intense conversation about electromagnetics and engineering.
Korra: Yup, that's Asami there. My girlfriend.
Kara: Yup. That's Lena. My girlfriend.
Korra: Huh. So what can you do? I can bend all four elements and metal! *shows off by waterbending the water from Lena's glass, then uses airbending to boost herself upward briefly, and bends stone around the room* Lena: Would you please put my water back in its glass? Asami: It could short-circuit the electronics. Korra: Whoops. *Drops water carefully into glass but then bends the metal bar that's lying on the table into a knot*
Kara: Okay, but that was really awesome. So, as Supergirl, I can do this. *Flies into the air, shoots lasers from her eyes, then lifts up half the lab with one arm.* Lena: Kara, please, if you're showing off, do it away from the portal. *turns back to Asami* So you're saying, you build a powered suit using pistons, hydraulics, and platinum? Are you sure its platinum? Because the hardness and tensile strength you described sounds like titanium to me. Asami: You know, maybe that's what it's called here. Let me show you. *proceeds to draw the chemistry diagram for the metal*
Lena: Fascinating. That's definitely titanium.
Korra: I bet I can beat you in a fight.
Kara: No way. I could beat you.
Lena and Asami: If you're going to fight, take it outside please.
Lena: I'm also filming it. *Reaches over and picks up a round ball and then proceeds to type something into her keyboard. Asami watches fascinated as the ball rises into the air and follows Kara out of the room and onto the porch area of the lab* Asami: Was that a tiny mech? Lena: Robot. Asami: Wait, so what powers it? I've struggled with decreasing the size of batteries due to... Korra unhooks herself, cracks her knuckles, and follows Kara outside. MEANWHILE IN AVATAR-VERSE: Mako: Why did the rope go slack?
Bolin: OH NOES. Do you think they got eaten?
Mako: Bo, by what? *his eyes widen* Oh no, they could really be in trouble then.
Bolin: We go to save them! But we need someone to man the ropes for us.
Mako: Let me radio Jinora. *picks up the portal radio* Jinora? Can you send some help to the new portal?
Opal and Jinora soon join them. They agree to man the ropes while Mako and Bolin head into the portal. MEANWHILE ON EARTH-38:
Mako and Bolin exit the portal and stare in shock at Asami standing by a brunette, while Korra and Kara battle outside. The walls are transparent, and the fight is intense.
Bolin: Asami! We're here to save you! *puts up his fists*
Asami: Wait what? No! Korra and I are fine.
Lena: Who the hell are you two?
Mako: So you're not about to be poisoned or something? *has fire blades ready in his hands*
Asami: NO! Lena here was chatting with me about the technology here. Korra is just sparring with Kara. Lena, that's Bolin and Mako, our friends.
Bolin: Oh. Do you have any snacks? Because I got to see this.
Mako: *sighs* whatever.
Lena: *grumbling but opens snack cabinet and tosses food at Bolin* I hope no one else comes through. I still need to calibrate... Asami: For the calibrations, do you have to manually type commands? Lena: Actually, no, I write code for that. Asami: TEACH ME.
Mako and Bolin sit down with their snacks to watch the increasingly intense fight. Korra has all four elements and is in Avatar state while flying in the air. Kara is blocking all the attacks using invulnerability and trying to get close enough to do a right hook.
After several minutes, Jinora and Opal rush through the portal.
Jinora: Are you all okay?
Opal: Woah, nice place.
Lena: What the fuck is with you people?? Go home! I can't turn off the portal with y'all here!
Bolin: Can't! Got to see who wins!
Jinora: I apologize for the intrusion! I'm Jinora and this is Opal. We were worried about the brothers.
Asami: Here's some snacks. Korra is battling Kara to see who is stronger. *gestures to the windows* I think it's an even match so far.
Lena: *scoffs* Kara is obviously winning. She's invulnerable to all of Korra's attacks. She also has the ability to fly, and her laser vision can easily incinerate most of what Korra fires at her.
Asami: *laughs* So? Korra's ability to dodge with airbending keeps her a moving target. Kara has yet to land a punch. Also, the fire blasts, ice daggers, and stone spikes keep her on the defensive.
The pair fall into an argument into the science of their girlfriends' powers and how they may work scientifically. The argument ends up so heated that Lena finally throws up her hands in defeat.
Lena: FINE. Let's find out who wins then?
Asami: FINE. More snacks are needed though. Bolin eats enough for three, I swear.
Lena grumbles under her breath about insatiable eaters, while she makes popcorn for all of them instead using her bunsen burners.
Alex, Kelly, Brainy, and Nia burst into Lena's lab.
Alex: Are you okay? We heard about the invasion!
Asami: Invasion? We're just visiting.
Lena: Don't interfere! This is important research.
Alex: Who the hell are these people? *gestures to the Avatar-verse people*
Mako: Who the spirits are you? *jumps to his feet with his fire blades ready*
Bolin: We need more popcorn! *waves an empty bowl*
Nia: Did you say popcorn? Yesss. You're my new friend.
Opal: So you're all friends of Lena? *Opens snack cabinet and ignores Lena's glare at her touching Lena's things. Takes out snacks and tosses them at Jinora who hands them to the others*
Kelly: Yes. Don't tell me, she had an accident in the lab?
Lena: Not an accident! I might have unintentionally created a bridge to another multiverse that is directly parallel to ours per M-brane theory --
Asami: M-brane theory? Spirits, we're way behind. We just figured out quantum entanglement exists and how to build planes. Tell me all about M-brane theory please.
Brainy: I posit that if you tell her that could alter the trajectory of their world with dangerous consequences--
Lena and Asami: Shut up Brainy!
Bolin hands out more popcorn for the now TWO shows: Kara and Korra fighting still -- the fight has gotten more and more intense with no sign of either being able to land a significant blow on the other. On the other hand, Asami and Lena fall into an intense argument about physics, which is interspersed with yells at Brainy to stop interrupting them.
Brainy: Sharing this with a person of lesser technology may interfere with the time modality of their multiverse --
Lena: Brainy, if you don't shut up, I'm kicking you out!
Asami: It's not like I'm going to completely rebuild the entirety of all engineering in my world. I mean, I could, I am rich, and you know, that would be a fun project...
Lena: Ah, shaping society through money and technology. Sounds like me... *she trails off and stares at Asami*
Asami: Oh my spirits
Lena: Oh my god
Asami and Lena: ARE WE THE SAME PERSON?
Bolin: *throws popcorn into his mouth* Yup.
Nia: And those two fighting are probably the same person too.
Brainy: I calculate that the probability of two identical people from alternate universes could disrupt the time continuum-- Everyone but Nia: SHUT UP BRAINY.
Nia: *shoves a beer into his hands and pulls him down next to her* Shush, just enjoy the show.
THE END... FOR NOW?

Things my professors have said: chemistry edition, part 4
[part 1] [part 2] [part 3]
"a polite electron has it easier"
[talking about his student years] "a window in the analytical chemistry lab would open and your notebook would fly out because the professor didn't like something you wrote in it. You had to take a nice little walk downstairs to get it back"
"turns out my husband has diabetes. It runs in the family I guess, our cat had diabetes too"
"if any of you can get me an automatic titrator, I'll give you an A as your final grade"
"well, that's not quite true, but physicists can't hear me now, so let's say it is"
"use a shorter glass rod, will you? You aren't a conductor"
"you'll learn it next year. If you survive"
"everybody hide, a radical is coming!"
"if we know one of the components, all the other ones are undefined. It's not like they're just hidden from us because the system is shy and won't show us"
"I believe that at least once in your lifetime you should hear the scary truth about orbitals"
"you can cool a human down to the temperature of liquid helium but only once"

Catching Flies (Revised) Ch. 14
Chapter 13: Calm Before the Storm
Overall rating: Teen
Summary: You catch more flies with honey than vinegar. That’s what they say anyway.
Teacher!Reader makes the mistake of trying to help the two most troubled kids in your class. This leads to forming a science club, learning some childhood psychology, adopting an alien older than you, and somehow catching Professor Membrane’s interest.
Afab Non-binary Reader;
The reader does have a last name: Nemo– which means no-name.
Chapter One |Master post |Ao3
Professor Membrane's altruism had spread to most of the city over the next few days. The official story was that it was Membrane Labs' way of giving back to the community in time of need, though you wondered secretly if it had more to do with the Professor's guilt regarding the whole situation.
Just when you thought you couldn't have more respect for the man. The new transport system made getting around the city so much easier, and the air seemed fresher in the dingy neighborhood where you lived. You could open your window and not be gassed by the noxious fumes from the freeway and the trains next door.
But the rest of the electric grid was still a work in progress, and your old coffee pot and other essential electronics were fried from the various power surges as they tried to fix things. You could live without television, and the lights and appliances were under your renter’s insurance.
But your coffee pot. That you mourned the most.
You made a face as you made a cup of instant coffee, stirring it as you looked out the window and reminding yourself it was a small price to pay. Things could be much worse, all things considered. It was at least caffeinated, and school had been canceled this week, if not longer, meaning you didn’t have to be fully energized to get through the day.
Your new phone had given you quite the head start compared to your peers. While the rest of the faculty was trying to figure out how to deal with the EMP disaster, you had finished your paper grading, plugged away at recreating your planner for the remainder of the year (glad you used a notebook for your notes) and had been reassured that everything else had been saved to the Membrane Labs cloud.
Your new phone rang, cutting through your morning compilation with its vibrant cheery tune. You were still astounded at how different, how futuristic it was compared to what you were used to. For instance, instead of a crackly tinny voice over the phone, a holoscreen popped up when you answered, showing Dib grinning on the pale-blue screen. "Mx. Nemo!"
"Hey Dib," you greeted. "Enjoying the vacation?"
His smile waned as his expression shifted into a mix of obvious disgruntled guilt. "Uh, not exactly. Dad has restricted the internet to just 'educational' websites, and Zim can only come over if we're working on homework or the project. Which, uh, is part of the reason I called you."
“Oh?” Your own smile faded, replaced by wary concern. Why--how-- could that relate to his reason for calling you. Surely nothing good…
"Well, dad is working in the lab trying to catch up on his work after the last few days,” Dib started innocently enough, “but Zim and I really want to work on this project. So we were hoping that if you’re here, then you can keep an eye on us, and dad's terms would be met…"
The proposal sounded fair, but you couldn't help but feel like he had ulterior motives. Yet no matter how many times you tried to figure out what it could possibly be, you came up blank.
This was the trouble with having students whose intelligence rivaled your own.
"Well, if your father is okay with it..." you finally answered. Surely Professor Membrane could figure out if his own son was up to something. (Hopefully.)
Dib smiled-- rather mischievously, you noted. "I'm sure dad made it pretty clear you're welcome any time, but I'm sure he wouldn't mind if you would call."
Call. Professor Membrane. The thought echoed in your mind like the heavy toll of a bell. It was one thing to be emailing him, but to call him?
Yes, he did say to call him if needed, and had even given you his number(s). Yet the idea of calling the Professor over something like this left you unsettled. What exactly were you going to say?"Hey Professor, do you mind if I come over today to babysit your son and his friend?"
Which, five minutes later, is exactly word for word what you asked Professor Membrane once he answered his phone, before continuing on with:"The boys wanted to work on their project and said they needed supervision."
"Ah, I see. I suppose it's my turn to apologize," he turned slightly away from his project to focus on you. Or at least his own holographic display of you. "I hadn't anticipated Dib would ask you as a way to circumvent his punishment."
"I take it that's a no, then?" You mentally scolded yourself. Dib was grounded, so of course he wouldn't be able to work on his extracurricular activities. (And now Professor Membrane thought you were an idiot for being tricked by such a simple ploy.)
"Well, not exactly…” Membrane sighed. It was odd how-- despite his facial expression virtually completely obscured-- you could still tell he was deep in thought. “I cannot find any fault in the request. However, I don't want you to feel indebted or compelled to entertain Dib on your precious time off."
Oh, you hadn’t even thought of it that way. That was even more embarrassing. “I don’t have that many hobbies...or friends,” you admitted, wishing for once you had just a plain phone where he couldn’t see you turn a bright red. “And those two are rather special to me. I don’t mind supervising them for a little bit. Unless you feel it interferes with Dib’s punishment, that is.”
"I could never deny my boy's passion for science, even when he is in trouble. Nor…" Professor Membrane trailed off, pausing for a moment. You wished you could see his face and be able to read his expression as he apparently stared off into space.
"Professor?" You asked after the silence stretched on.
"R-right!" Professor Membrane snapped out of his thoughts with a faint jerk, almost as if he had completely forgotten you were still on the call. "Yes, of course. You are welcome to come over, Mx. Nemo. Anytime. I'll, uh, update the security programs to recognize you as a visitor. Have-a-good-day, bye!"
The connection feed suddenly cut off, leaving you very confused. That… was not at all like the Professor. He was usually always so composed, not...flustered. That was more, well, a 'you' kind of reaction.
What would cause him to fluster like that? Where had his thoughts drifted off to?
Surely something work-related. Maybe he had just realized something critically important. Or was inspired with a possible solution for a difficult problem.
It surely had nothing to do with you.
--+--
"I could never deny my boy's passion for science, even when he is in trouble. Nor…" could I refuse the chance to see you.
Despite never speaking the words, the thought still resonated in his mind. Along with how close they were nearly spoken out loud,
For the sake of science, what had he been about to say?
He had known that he had been inching closer to being compromised by the lack of sleep, but hadn’t thought he was that sleep deprived! Yes, he could acknowledge that he was attracted to you, but that didn't mean he had to act on his impulses. In fact, since he was now aware of his feelings and therefore biases towards you, he planned on curbing his actions back into what could be considered ‘friendly’ and not allowing them to evolve into anything different.
His life was dedicated to science. He had vowed to do his utmost best to make the world a better place. Raising two children was distraction enough from his life's work, it wouldn't be logical to pursue a relationship with you.
Yet this was proving to be one of those rare times where he found himself tempted by such illogical things. To allow something other than his work or family to occupy his thoughts. To indulge in the feelings that were (rather irrationally) trying to affect his actions.
He was…he was tempted by you, and he wasn’t quite sure how to handle that.
--+--
You weren't sure what Professor Membrane meant by having the security programs recognize you as a visitor. After all, though you could imagine he had quite the security system protecting his home, you couldn't recall seeing any kind of cameras or anything when you were there last time.
Thankfully nothing happened as you approached the dark gray home, though this time you looked closely for any signs of a security system out of curiosity, and di
At least, that you could see. But Dib seemed to know you were at the door before you could even knock. "Hey Mx. Nemo! Zim's on his way, so…"
"Dib-human!" Zim interrupted as he clambered over the fence separating the Membrane home from the neighbors'. "Why did you call me at such a Tallest-forsaken time?"
"It's noon, Zim. That's hardly an indecent hour," you rebutted as he approached, faintly concerned how discombobulated he looked. Granted, it could just be from apparently being woken and rushing on his way over…
"Without school I...lose track of earth-time," Zim grumbled, looking rather sheepish. “My natural circadian rhythm is opposite to that of your stupid society’s.”
It took you a moment to translate that into words, and realized he was just admitting he was a natural night-owl. Which made plenty of sense. "That I can understand," you agreed as Dib ushered you both inside, leading you through the house. You gave Gaz a wave as you passed, who barely acknowledged your presence as she played her video game.
The garage in the backyard looked normal enough on the outside. Except you were pretty sure it was bigger on the inside as soon as Dib opened the rolling door. Tons of odd things you had no name for were stuffed inside, mixed with more 'normal' items like a lawnmower and such.
It had to be a storage for Professor Membrane's items, yet none of them quite matched the...aesthetic of his other items. You kept your thoughts to yourself...at least until you reached the back of the garage while the boys dragged out a table with supplies, apparently knowing exactly what they needed and what to do.
"What the… what is this?" You swore as you looked at… Well, your mind wanted to call it a spaceship, though you knew that couldn't be right. It was nothing like the one you had seen in the (fake) news articles and the odd conspiracy video you watched.  If anything, it was more akin to what you imagined a ship from a sci-fi story would look like.
"Tak's ship. We were trying to repair it, but haven't been able to work on it since Project 13." Dib answered distractedly, not that it actually answered your question. Tak’s ship? Who (or maybe what?) was Tak, how did they have a ship? Was it really a spaceship?
Then you recalled the emails you had with the Professor a few weeks earlier, and how he had mentioned Dib and Zim had been working on a spaceship. You had thought he meant perhaps a model, or something made from spare parts. Not something that looked this advanced.
Or real, for that matter.  No wonder they seemed to be handling everything else so easily.
While your mind was still reeling with the unexpected discovery, you found a place to sit and brought out your phone in hopes you could work on your teaching plans while the boys worked on the rover. After all, you couldn’t exactly actively contribute when they far surpassed your own skills when it came to engineering. You were literally just a babysitter-- making sure they didn’t start fighting, or blow anything up.
You weren't sure how much time had passed between working and reading and watching the boys before Zim threw a tool in frustration, snarling words you had never heard before but knowing they were meant as curses. You were ripped from your novel you had been reading and had a flash of panic before you were able to control your instinctive fear.
"Don't you dare blow it up again!" Dib swore, protecting the machine, which was little more than wheels and the needed machinery to make it move. Which-- from your little knowledge-- it was not doing.
Zim didn't pay any attention but hissed ferally as he tried to claw the machine despite Dib holding him back. "It's evil! Cursed! It must be destroyed for defying the mighty Zim!"
"Calm down," you tried to sooth as you stood. "What's going on?"
"It's not responding," Dib said as he kept the rover base away from Zim. "I'm not sure if it's a mechanical failure or maybe a program issue."
"Neither! The mighty Zim makes no mistakes!"
"Hey, mistakes are a part of learning, which is what this whole project is about." You pulled Zim back and knelt down so you were eye to eye with him, though his attention was still focused on the rover. "You two are amazing, but no one is perfect. All that matters is you do your best to learn from the mistakes."
He finally met your gaze, his anger diminishing. "Failures are not tolerated in the Irken empire."
Ok...what? He had said that with such firm conviction and absolute steadiness that it sent chills down your spine.
There were so many questions running through your head. Who told him failures were not tolerated? What the hell was the Irken Empire? Was that a family thing? Was it the reason his parents left him? How much did that simple sentence impact his life? His outlook?
But this wasn't the time to question it. You needed to defuse this delusion (if you remembered that psych book correctly.)
"But, this isn't the Irken Empire. This is a project to help you learn, and hopefully for fun. I know originally it started out as punishment, but hopefully you don't see it as that anymore."
Zim opened his mouth to argue, closed it, then repeated a few more times before looking to Dib, almost asking for help.
The other boy shrugged his shoulders, "They're right. You're not part of that anymore. Let's ask dad to see if he can figure out what the problem is."
"And he won't be...angered?" Zim cautiously asked, glancing between you and Dib.
You wanted to hug him so bad, but figured it wouldn't be the best thing to do right now.
Dib scoffed, "Nah, you've seen him, he loves a challenge. And this is a challenge."
With an encouraging nod, the three of you returned back inside. Dib hit the small button next to the door in the kitchen, which you assumed led to the downstairs.
"Yes?" Professor Membrane, a small screen flickering to life.
"We need some help," Dib said, holding the rover base up. "We’re not sure if it's a mechanical issue or coding, or…"
"I'll be up in a minute," was his simple reply. Not angry or annoyed, just matter-of-fact. Yet as you waited at the kitchen table with the boys, you remembered the awkward ending to the phone call earlier that morning.  You hoped to the universe it was just a one-time thing, yet you feared the worst at the same time.
But when Professor Membrane appeared, he barely acknowledged you as he sat at the table, taking the rover from the boys. You sat, feeling virtually non existent and very out of place as they discussed the problem. Most of the terms flew over your head, making you feel rather idiotic, even as you tried to work on your own project.
"Ah, this coding patch here. We'll have to figure out how to separate the GPS from the controls after all. Steering it manually instead of using the GPS as guidance."
"Ugh," the boys groaned in unison, but pulled out a tablet and started to go over the strings of code. While the two talked amongst themselves, silence hung between you and Professor Membrane. You kept your focus on your phone, though you were acutely aware of him beside you.
"So," he started with a rather awkward cough, "how has your afternoon been?"
You blinked in surprise as you met his gaze, close enough to once again see his eyes behind his goggles. It felt… more personal when you could see his eyes. He wasn't the untouchable, world-famous scientist, just...a really mysterious, admirable person that you liked. A lot. More than a lot.
"Ah, good," you stuttered after a moment, looking away and fiddling with your phone. "Just working on getting things prepared for school to resume while watching the boys. They've been rather well behaved today."
Professor Membrane hummed thoughtfully, "I know Dib has realized the consequences of his actions, though I wonder about Zim…."
The boys were too involved in their project to notice your conversation had turned towards them. You thought of Zim's earlier statement, and wondered if part of his fear of failure was related at all to it. Sure, he couldn't be punished the same way as Dib...but maybe had still learnt his lesson.
"I doubt either of them will do anything like that in the future." Or so you hoped, but you pushed that dark though away. "Besides, with the expo in just a week, hopefully they will be too busy. I just hope they will have time to finish everything."
Butterflies fluttered in your stomach as he chuckled. "Those boys would have it done in less than twenty-four hours if we let them."

today’s educational and demystifying post: How DO you connect a record player or turntable to a computer so you can rip vinyl?
Or for that matter, listen to records through your PC speakers. If this isn’t of interest to you, continue scrolling. If it is, click on thru to the other side...
Where does one get a thingie that plays records? You can go the cheap route and find one in a thriftstore, you can go the pricey route and buy one new, you can go the upper-mid-range route and find one at a used record store (at least you’re more certain than at a thrift that the thing will work!) -- or you can cheat the system a bit by buying one of those all-in-one record/tape/CD/radio setups that look like an old cabinet, branded with Crosley or Intelligent Technology or the like, and see what options it has for output (two RCA output jacks and/or a headphone jack), which often costs less than just a turntable alone.
Can we even do this? It’s fair to say that not every record player can be connected to anything at all if it has built-in speakers. Many, though, have a headphone jack that when plugged into will shut off the speakers, so that’s one way. Turntables meanwhile always have some way to connect to a stereo system, specifically the coaxial connectors known as RCA plugs, and occasionally have a headphone jack also. The RCA plugs are usually color coded red and white for the left and right channels, though nothing’s going to explode if you switch them. :) Here’s what the RCA plugs from a turntable look like next to the RCA input jacks on the back of my stereo receiver:
Tumblr media
So how do I get the record player connected to my computer? Let’s look at the computer first... There’s a microphone jack on the computer, on the back or possibly you have a second one on the front of a desktop machine, or on a notebook there’s a jack on the side, and many are color-coded pink. (Additionally there may be a blue color-coded jack next to it labelled Line In. It does the same thing but at a different volume level and that’s what I use on my notebook because something’s wonky about my mike input.) Now let’s look at whatever you’re playing a record on... If it only has a headphone jack, you can use one of those plug-to-plug cables ($8 at Walmart, $1 at Dollar Tree) that have become popular for playing music from your cell phone or MP3 player through the Auxillary jack of your car’s radio. [left] If it has RCA plugs, there are handy adaptors (two styles are shown here) to shift from RCA jacks to a headphone plug. [right] 2-RCA-jacks-to-1/8″-stereo-plug adaptors are available online or you might find one at a thriftstore or electronics store like BestBuy.
Tumblr media
So plug the headphone cable into the record player’s headphone jack OR plug the two RCA plugs into the adaptor, and then stick the other end of the wire you’re holding into the computer’s microphone jack (or Line In). Now you are set!
(If you want to/can get a little more snazzy -- useful for adjusting volume and balance, the use of an equalizer, and some bonus effects like Bass Boost and Surround Sound -- here’s how I have my home setup: The turntable is connected to the RCA inputs on my stereo receiver, and I’ve run a cable from the receiver’s headphone jack to the computer’s input jack.)
Okay, so now what do I do on the computer? It’d take a longer post to explain every last detail fully, but you can shortcut past most of this by using the controls in the sound editor program Audacity, which you’ll probably want to be using anyway. (Nothing against any of its rivals like Magix Audio Cleaning Lab, which I also use for its various effects, but Audacity is very easy to understand for the process of ripping music from vinyl.) Let’s set Windows up to use the turntable as an input device now. In the latest version of Audacity, here’s the toolbar at the top:
Tumblr media
First thing, choose the source (as shown). The above presumes that we’re using the frontside microphone jack on my computer; if the plug were in the backside Line In jack, that would be another option listed. Now we need to get the input sound level set. I’m going to put a record on and drop the needle in some random location; in the control buttons on the left I click Pause then click Record (just like a tape recorder!) so the input volume will be dynamically displayed without starting a recording:
Tumblr media
The green ever-shifting bars in the input meter show that audio is coming into the sound card indeed, so that part was successful. Right in the middle (over the number 30) is the thumb for adjusting the input level -- if the bars weren’t going far on the scale, I’d move the thumb to the right to make it more sensitive, and if the bars were all the way to the right, I’d move the thumb to the left until the bars were maxing out between 6 and 12 on the scale, the yellow zone of the meter, because you don’t want it to be overloud (that’s called ‘clipping’; you can use the software to amplify not-loud-enough sound so being in the midrange is best). Once you have the input level corrected, now’s when you should adjust the output sound -- the standard Windows way, by clicking the speaker icon next to the clock to move the slider -- so you can hear it at your comfort level, and it doesn’t affect the volume of the audio files you create.
Okay, you can click the Stop button now that you have the input and output sound levels set, or you can restart the record where you want to begin and unpause. How to rip, edit, and save music is a different post. :)
What if I don’t hear what’s playing but Audacity shows the sound is working correctly? Also: Can I play vinyl and have the sound come through my PC speakers without being in a sound editor program? Input audio playing through the speakers is a function of Windows’ Sound control panel, the exact location of the toggle varies between versions, but here’s a screencap of what’s what in Windows 10:
Tumblr media
Path here: Sound control panel, under Input the Microphone is selected so click Device Properties, then the window shifts to the Device Properties list; under Related Settings click Additional Device Properties, a new dialog pops up with four tabs, and under the Listen tab check “Listen to this device”. Also available here is the Levels tab, which is the place you’d be adjusting the recording level manually if you didn’t do it through Audacity as explained a minute ago.
A protip: It’s probably best to be listening through headphones, rather than using your computer’s speakers at normal volume, when ripping so you hear better sound quality as you work as well as so the playback sound doesn’t bleed/echo into the recording, because needles are fairly sensitive. Yes, I have an MP3 of Thompson Twins’ “Hold Me Now (Extended Version)” where you can hear me lean back in my creeky desk chair during a quiet passage...
So now you know how to physically set up a record player to your computer and how to get the computer to use the record player as an audio input!

Endangered: Doc's ending
_____________________
Ever since B-12 got his own body Doc asked him to have a check in once a week just to make sure everything is working fine and also just for little interviews about humans or stuff only B-12 knows since ya know he's been stuck in the network for so long but now they are pretty much lab partners now.
"Oh human will you be joining me? I'm visiting Doc for another interview" B-12 asked picking some of his notebooks and a small bookbag.
Since Doc didn't tell anyone he was building B-12 an entire body he had no place to stay until his house was built so I offered him my own place I had 2 spare rooms may as well put one into good use.
"Sure why not!" Hopping downstairs I meet B-12 at the door he shook his head.
"You really shouldn't do that you might hurt yourself"
"B-12 I've jumped from building to building, ran around the sewers with zurks chasing me behind and break into house's I don't think jumping down the stairs will do anything to me" I retort closing the door.
"Fair point but it never hurts to be safe" B-12 states patting my head jokingly and started heading to Doc's place he lived near one of the ends of the town near an old garbage dump it was at a decent distance so thankfully it didn't stink.
I think Doc chose this spot for the discarded electronics and other things humans left behind while Seamus wanted to use extra parts to build a playground for the little bots and for Stray and his family apparently from what I've heard one of them are having kits Momo is keeping a close eye on them for me so I can check up on them and help out.
B-12 softly knocked on Doc's door after hearing a few stumbling sounds Seamus opened the door with a smile.
"Oh human B-12 hi! papa is in his lab" Seamus moved to the side to let us in.
"You go have your interview I'll wait" B-12 nodded and walked into the lab Seamus offered me a seat in the living room and we catched up on what was happening me asking about how the playground is going along and him asking about the deliverys.
After talking we sat in an comfortable silence as we watched Tv it was on the news updating everyone on everything on the surface an in the walled city apparently all the sentinels have broken down after being exposed to the sun light it was unknown how but Clementine was pretty happy about it.
"...papa has a crush on you" Seamus spills out of nowhere.
I nearly choked on my own saliva and stared at him waiting for him to say 'haha got you' or 'kidding' or something but I was only met with a blank stare back.
"You're serious?" I laughed nervously.
"I heard him pretending to confess to you in the mirror with some flowers he borrowed from Clementine" Wow Seamus really do be snitching.
"I-I see..." Honestly I'm not sure how to go about this really this is coming out of nowhere.
"I know you like him too everyone does your bad at hiding it papa and is too dumb to figure it out" wow Seamus is also coming after my emotions too.
"Okay thanks for the heads up-" I'm still waiting for Seamus to just start laughing but he is still staring into my soul.
"Want me to tell him?"
"No! No no I can- this sort of thing takes time" I'm not asking Doc's son to confess for me I'd rather face that huge horrifying eye instead.
"Okay" Seamus then turns back to face the Tv again acting like this was just a normal conversation.
Now we sat in awkward silence I was just waiting for B-12 to come out so I can book it through the doors and run for the hills.
This interview is taking forever and Seamus just seems unbothered about the situation.
"Hey guys we're done" B-12 says walking out the lab with Doc waving to greet me but suddenly Seamus pointed at me.
"Papa the Human likes you back!"
.......
This little bit-
"I'll uhh leave you two at it let's go Seamus" B-12 grabs Seamus by the jacket and dragged him out the door Doc understandably has a shocked and nervous look.
"I Really should fix that boys filter" you think?
"So... You practiced a confession?" I couldn't help myself I didn't know how to start and that was the only opening I could think of.
Doc fell to his knees in shame covering his screen with his palms.
"Oh my god he saw that!? I'm so sorry this must be very embarrassing for you" I walk over to Doc crouching down to his level.
"I think you missed the part where Seamus said I liked you honestly I'm kinda glad he told me about your feelings no matter how awkward that was but still" At that Doc looks out from his palms then at me.
"I'm sorta glad too? I'm just mad I didn't get to use my practiced speech" Doc laughed slightly.
"A speech? Well I'm not stopping you" I laughed as Doc nudged me with his elbow.
"Absolutely not I've embarrassed myself enough today I'll do it when we have a date"
"Aww then I can't wait to hear it" standing up I helped pull Doc back up to his feet he tilted his head to the side and looked past me with an unamused look.
Turning around I saw Seamus, B-12 and Kosma looking through the window Kosma quickly running away when spotted Seamus was giving thumbs up to his father.
"Away with all of you! Can't a bot have privacy??" Doc pulled the blinds down while angrily waving his fist as I laughed this poor man can't catch a break.
"Why...why don't we uhhh 'chill out'?" Doc asked signaling to the couch.
"Won't it be dark soon? What about Seamus?" Is he really locking his son outside?
"I'm sure B-12 will keep him company" Doc signed sitting next to me and switching the channel.
"I wish this was a bit more romantic I was planning something better" Doc laughed rubbing the back of his head.
"Hey it's okay at least we have a funny story to share"
"Please don't tell Clementine she'll never let me live it down" I pretended to think for a moment.
"Hmmm maybe... If I get to have two days delivery free" Doc pretend to gasp at my words putting a hand on his chest in fake offence.
"How dare you!" He put the back of his falm on his forehead for the finishing touch.
"Because I'd rather spend those days with you~" I leaned onto Doc's side.
"Oh flattering now? Well you are pulling me by the wires...okay three days off" I laughed and extra day off score! I mean I don't really have to do the deliverys since it's just me offering help but I thought it would be funny.

Haunted Doll Watch!! That’s Delaine in the striped chair (haunted doll 1) and the harlequin doll is Luna (haunted doll 2)
Books! Mostly witchcraft, Wicca, and New Age junk that I snagged for free out of a donation bin during my library days. Yes it includes Big Blue Buckland and To Ride a Silver Broomstick. You can’t see the nearly-complete Kyron collection behind the Pagan Family book but it’s there. Also yes that’s a fanbook for the MXTX series.
The Chris Chan art is on the top shelf next to the tiny treasure chest (which contains old, old Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab scents).
World Band radio from my dad. Journals and notebooks down there.
Literature shelf 1: Joyce and Pynchon and Pratchett but also a first edition of New Frontiers of the Mind which was about to get weeded at a library. Naturally I grabbed it. Also Sister Karol’s Little Book of Spells and Rituals which is so odd and I love it. Rando army officer’s guide that once belonged to a Rosicrucian. No joke.
Tasty-smelling unused candle (unused) with silver butterfly, Nendroid boxes, MXTX books lying down (because they tend to bend when standing up). Imported stickers.
Bottom shelf is a lot of foreign language: Japanese novels, including Memoirs of a Geisha, Misery by Stephen King, and one titled God Is a Gun. Again: donations that I grabbed. Couple of manga because back in the day you could score Japanese manga at conventions. I miss those days. It was fun. One book in Japanese about “Getting Along in English” and another on “adulting.” Also the Glitch game artbook. I miss Glitch so much. The lantern is disassembled because the batteries leaked and I need to clean it up, sigh.
Literature shelves 2+: drawing books, Japanese craft book for cat houses, Cormac McCarthy my beloved, The Practice of the Presence of God. BCP (baptism gift to me as a baby) and the Bible in Chinese (another donation). Teacup for gin (it’s the cucumber one, yes). Random bottles and jars because I love them. A Course in Miracles both volumes and teacher’s workbook (more donations). V.C. Andrews because I sometimes have no taste. Haunted photograph, Arthur, is in the ripped-up looking case to be protected from sunlight. Animal Crossing: New Horizons-edition Switch dock (I didn’t want the paint/decal to get scratched). Little tiny chenille chicks used for pranks. People in a bag for Sashimiko cosplays. Japanese fashion magazines and Gothic & Lolita Bibles. The Red Book sitting on a children’s book in Chinese, partial view of sewing patterns. Unseen: more books stacked on the floor.
Literature shelves 3+: with Saint Dymphna, patroness of those with mental illnesses. Listen, I’ll try anything. There’s Big Blue Buckland’s, couple more Llewellyn magic(k) books, the Normal Tarot book, and the third copy of City of Bohane (I love that book but not enough for 3 copies; long story). Tarot cards and Lenormande cards. Russian language book. Imported stickers. Random electronics bits (cords, &c) and office supplies live in the two bins.
On top you’ve got Senor Misterioso (he glows in the dark) and his real saint figurine self, Doctor Jose Gregorio Hernandez. They are counterparts. Lantern. Fake succulent. Rando room spray. SACRED TUMBLR BRAND SHOELACES!!!! Aforementioned haunted doll, Luna. Egg cup with blessed salt.
On the other side, egg cup w/ salt (alt. view), plastic palm trees from my old desk in the library, “fake” fountain pens and more imported stickers. Fake flowers mostly from cosplay, bowl held by claws (Target Halloween 5 or 6 years ago), cup with a jubilee of pens. Xie Lian bookmark 💗 Tiny gashapon and blind box doodads. Wooden jar.
There you go. That’s my shelves. I can entertain questions if you’d like. Closeups available.

Some au not so fun facts because I haven't done this in a while (some aren't too bad but still)
-yetd donnie has good and bad days . Good days are when the kraang don't really talk to them or influence their thought processes. On days like these, it's pretty easy to forget that anything is even wrong (until they look in the mirror, obviously)
Bad days are when the kraang talk to them a lot or try to influence or coerce them into doing things. On days like these, they have really bad panic attacks and lock themself in their lab because they're scared of what they might do if they don't. They hope to death that nothing is planned on days like these. Their siblings have asked why they do this and been at their door, asking and begging for them to come out, but they don't usually answer.
-lftpd D was dissasociating most of the time when they were in the prison dimension. They don't remember most of their time there because of that (which is honestly for the best, but they would prefer to know)
-there are also a lot of memory gaps in general for them. They forget basically everything about their home/family, etc. The notebook does help a decent amount since it has information, drawings, and certain events that have happened, but at one point, they stopped writing in it and got paranoid about all of it being wrong.
-csm donnie is on edge a decent amount of time when the devil hunters find out about xem (there's a period where nobody knows about xem) since its whereabouts could be found out pretty easily if he isn't careful, although they're pretty hard to kill since if there's any electronic device around he could just- go into it, which helps with this
-osnw donnie isn't aware that their siblings even exist. They always just assumed that they were the only one left of their family or something like that, so when they encounter Leo (he's the one they meet first, since he's Hornet, so) they don't believe him when he tells them that they're siblings and an argument breaks out. Then donnie makes him prove it by challenging him to a battle (not to the death or anything like that fhsk) because according to them, "if we're really family then we'll fight like eachother." They believe Mikey a little easier than they did Leo since this is the second time now, and Leo told them there are others, although they still don't fully believe that.
-yetd donnie has burn scars from trying to use their ninpo to get rid of kraang infection so many times. Sometimes, they'll try over and over in a day out of desperation, and their muscles get weak from the damage, although they recover pretty quickly.
That's all I have for now but I'll probably think of more later <3

I will not get mad at the color combination that my coworkers used on our electronic lab notebook templates. I will simply change it in my entries. it’s fine that some people just aren’t bothered by atrocious combinations of colors. I have the peaceful warriors spirit
