I think one of the greatest flaws in most Star Wars writing is that, despite being half of the name, most of the writing seems to lack any practical comprehension of war. Ideologically, philosophically, politically, and all the impacts on characters? Sure, I'll give it that. But logistically? Strategically? Tactically? Not really.

I'm not asking for "Uber-realistic gritty hypertacticool grounded realistic gritty dark rah-rah" warfare. It's just that having two sides basically walk at eachother, or having people pop out of cover entirely to shoot, or having people miss at total point blank really destroys any tension or threat that the battle provides. It also really neuters some of the impact, ya know? When battle droids can deploy in hundreds but they'll hit, like, 2 dudes? And get completely wiped by the named characters without a sweat, it doesn't feel triumphant or cool. A competent threat, and a 'practical' depiction of war makes the characters cooler and helps nail the tone.
