Gotham Knights 1x07 "Bad to Be Good"

Loved this ep overall. Also bless this series for how it films Misha Collins. Who is himself a work of art.

Following on that theme from the past few eps, Cullen's concern about saving the painting from the black market, where it would wind up hidden from public eyes, is very community-minded of him. He also genuinely cares about the role of art. Steph also takes this up, as we're told they talked about "the importance of art." But also during their coffee and art talk, found a link to their immediate interests and needs.

Harper wonders why she or the Knights should care about works of communal value. She only gets interested when Steph tells them the paintings were all owned by Alan Wayne, which is a link to the Court of Owls. Harper needs a specific and immediate purpose link that involves self-preservation or protecting people she's close to before she cares. Cullen and Steph see a bigger picture but are also motivated by the specific interest and needs, they do both.

Carrie and Duela are a really fun chaos duo, opposites conspiring together and bickering the whole time. Carrie's judging-you-both faces at Eunice and Duela, the epic eye-rolls, Carrie regretting all her life choices, Carrie's thinking FML how did I wind up in this mess. And then Duela eye-rolling over Carrie. Comedy gold. The beginnings of that friendship was unexpected. They're demonstrating different points on the morality and ethics scale. This show has a lot of moral relativism. "Potato, tomato, little bird." Carrie was morally right, but wrong in this situation, Duela isn't ethical, but Duela's antics allowed them to save Detective Green's family.

Eunice stabbing Duela's hand with the ballerina from her music box was very hard core.

Turner seems like he's emerging as more of a leader in this ep. He's also using the bat-toys. Following his dad's legacy, but in his own way, not trying to be Batman.

I immensely enjoy how Misha plays every scene in this like the lead in a classic Hollywood noir or suspense thriller. He's got some great Jimmy Stewart, Cary Grant, Humphrey Bogart vibes going on. That shot of the cordless phone ringing, looming ridiculously large in foreground, is also vintage Hollywood, Hitchcock kind of style. Misha has the range, the gravitas, and the camera adores him. And Harvey's a whole meal of a character here (on top of being an absolute snack), one of the few decent Gotham leaders, a regular guy in over his head, wondering if he's going mad, trying to solve the mystery, plagued by his inner demons, while being a good person, but shadows over his shoulder.

Lauren Stamile does a great job playing Rebecca March. Her role here is the femme fatale of classic Hollywood. Vulnerable, sincere, yet a touch dangerous. Doesn't mean Rebecca is lying. But anyone who's watched some of those old films knows there could be some plot twists. I wonder where this arc is going to lead.

Steph tending to Harper's wound outside the warehouse and in the end scenes. Their cute flirting. The little smiles. After Harper saved Steph from mobster bullets, Steph taking care of Harper's bullet wound. Enemies to reluctant allies to sorta kinda friends to lovers? Yes please.

Cressida going to Harvey for help...might be sincere. It's looking like all of Gotham is in deadly peril, so much so that Cressida's fear for the fate of millions is overcoming her fear for herself. If the Court's bigger picture plans are a lot more dire than just controlling Gotham financially and socially. Something has scared her badly. Or it's another ploy.

That's one of the fun things about this series, there's a lot of layers, and secrets inside secrets and things not being what they seem.

El mejor brasileño, en tercer lugar, fue Gilmar Silvestre Lopes, con 2:17.22. At The Hotel

I haven’t been around much, as I have been busy with other things and haven’t had much time to spend finding new records. The one record I recently purchased was the reissue of an absolutely fantastic tune, ‘At The Hotel’ by Eunice Collins. I think the record speaks for itself, so I’m not gonna say much, other than I’ve not heard anything quite like it. The delivery of the lyrics, the contrast of the singer and the backing vocals, the production, it’s all just so spot on. Have a listen here.

personality : Wendy is the type of person that will give you the shirt off her back. Ever the hero, she’s good-hearted, kind, and bright, always willing to lend a helping hand with a smile. As open-minded as she is, Wendy is very grounded, stubborn, and set in her ways. She is a good person, mostly, but she can also be impulsive, vengeful, ambitious, or jealous. She can be about as unstable and manipulative as Cartman, and this shouldn’t be looked over, despite her countless good deeds. She’s not above being a shitty person if it gets the job done.

history : Wendy is daughter and only child to Collin and Lucille “Lucy” Testaburger. Coming from a family with a strong female presence in both politics and in the home, copious amounts of stubbornness and tact was instilled in Wendy from a young age.    

While loving and supportive, her parents both work quite time-consuming jobs, whether it be in City Hall or at a construction site. From a young age, she was already a latch-key kid, walking home alone from school, doing her own laundry, making her own snacks. Her parents didn’t bother with a babysitter because, well, Wendy didn’t need one. We’re talking Matilda-level self sufficiency here (without the cool brain tricks, of course). Much like everything else in her life, Wendy took on a leadership role, even when it came to her own care and well-being.     

In middle school, Wendy split from her longtime, on-and-off boyfriend, Stan, “for good”. Of course, that term as always been tentative when it comes to them, but to her credit, they haven’t been back together since. This is labeled as a defining moment in Wendy’s life. Breaking off a long-standing committed relationship is quite a step. Perhaps with or without relation to that, this is also when Wendy finished off her final years in cheerleading and volleyball (she couldn’t just quit–that’s not the Testaburger way).    

Wendy has some underdeveloped, pent-up anger issues. More often than not, tapping into that involves her fists, crisscrossed scars along her knuckles the spawn of a long line of broken walls and splintered trees. Her newly dropped sports and hobbies were supposed to be a way to give her more time to find herself–but with more time to herself, she seemed to be getting more frustrated.    

She picked up a job as a waitress at a local restaurant to save up money for a car (she refused to let mommy and daddy pay for it), and one night, she gets into an avid discussion with a group of rugged ladies about a fun event coming up in Denver. They invite her to come and, finding the prospect exciting, she accepts. Little did she know what she was being invited to was not some carnival, but something exciting, and quite illegal.    

Always being rather morally ambiguous, it didn’t take long for Wendy to get roped into the world of underground street fighting. It was a way to vent all the pent up frustration and anger she carried so heavily on her shoulders–and very effective, as well. There was nothing quite as satisfying as cracking a fist against wayward bone. She entered, and stayed, balancing her newfound hobby with her clubs, work, school, and internship. Quite the packed schedule, but that’s just the way Wendy likes it. She isn’t one to stay idle for long.     

This low-key career doesn’t come without repercussions, however. Wendy sometimes shows up to school with a few bruises or injuries, as much as she likes to keep them covered, sometimes something slips. What’s a girl to do? Wendy is president of the Key Club, South Park chapter, captain on the Debate Team, and plays on the baseball team during season. 

Wendy Testaburger had applied to seventeen different colleges. If there should be any academic award to be had, it should be the overachiever award. She’d got on the ball early, and she liked having options, if only to weigh them against each other and see how high she could score. She’d even applied to some Ivy leagues; Yale, Brown, Harvard. Shoot for the stars, right? Really put all those volunteer hours to use. Even if they did toss out her application when they saw that she was from Butt Fuck, Colorado.    

Letters swept into the mail, all acceptance notes, as was anticipated. Admittedly, if Wendy had received even one decline out of seventeen, she would have been thoroughly struck to the core. What college wouldn’t be happy to have Wendy fucking Testaburger grace their halls with her presence? They would have been out of their fucking minds.    

Still, all the confidence she had in her charm, good looks, and decently sized brain didn’t prepare her for the letter she opened from Yale. Heart pounding, blood racing, head spinning, she ran inside, nearly sliding on the ice that crusted the porch. After a good, long session of screaming and jumping, ruining the throw pillows on her parents’ couch, Wendy moved her attentions to her cellphone, pressing her mother’s number and beaming.    

She didn’t answer. Well, that was to be expected, that was her mobile number. Wendy must have been too excited to think things through. She scrolled to her mother’s secretary’s number, listening impatiently for the old woman to pick up.    Finally, an answer, “Office of Mrs. Lucille Testaburger, can I take a message?"   

Wendy sat up, gripping the phone tightly, "Hey, Alberta, it’s Wendy. Can I talk to my mom, please? It’s sort of an emergency."    

"Oh, I’m sorry, sweetie, but she’s in a very important meeting right now. She made it very clear that she wasn’t to be disturbed,” Not even by her own daughter, apparently, “Can I take a message? Is there anything wrong?"    

Pulling the phone away, Wendy heaved a sigh before she brought it to her ear once more, "No, that’s fine. I can just wait until she gets home. Thank you,”

Hanging up, she was almost discouraged. Almost. She quickly typed in her father’s number, answered with the sound of metal grinding against dirt, and her dad asking again and again for her to repeat herself. Wendy, finally conceding, hung up.

She could wait until they got home, no biggie.

headcanons : 

Wendy has a large, white cat named Rosie that she adopted from the local pet store as a kitten. Rosie has had two batches of kittens so far and shows no sign of stopping.

She has a severe allergy to strawberries, and always has an Epi-Pen on her–no telling when the lunch lady will decide to fuck up her lunch.

Wendy is the town lifeguard every summer [along with her best friend, Bebe, of course], and has extensive training in first aid and CPR. If you’ve come near drowning, you’ve probably had some lip-on-lip action with Wendo.

She has a truck! Kind of a shitty truck, but Wendy bought it with her own, hard-earned money, so regardless, she’s proud of it. Something is usually happening with it, but it’s nothing her dad can’t fix up. It always has this weird sound when it’s running but it’s her baby.

She’s a remarkably terrible cook with a sweet tooth. A cookies-and-cream candy bar and a handful of skittles is a guilty pleasure snack.

Needless to say, in her younger years, Wendy was around babysitters more than her actual parents. But this didn’t build up a resentment towards them. In fact, Wendy values and respects her parents, nearly to a fault. She’s consistently obedient and always takes their opinions into deep consideration. While she certainly wishes she could see them more often, this is a loving and supportive family group.

This is my great grandparents, Pat and Eunice Collins, on my mother’s side. I just received this picture along with a few others from her today. I was lucky enough to have known them but I was young.
