Don't try and touch him without permission, listen to his boundaries. He's patient, but he can lose his cool if his boundaries are continuously crossed. He holds respect in high regard, so if you treat him with respect and the desire to get to know him better(in stead of just running away like most sinners), he will respond in kind.

AUs I keep thinking about but will never write:

Bruce, Clark, (and Stephanie) coparenting a toddler. This comes in two variations:

A) Stephanie gets contacted by the adoption agency her child went to. They are wondering about her genetic history as her child has developed fairly dangerous powers and has gravely injured and scared her adopted parents. Bruce (the one who organized the adoption with the agency and is a public JL liaison), Superman (superpowers and JL resident Dad), Steph, and Tim (Steph's moral support) have to figure out how to provide the right support for this kid while maintaining appropriate boundaries with the adopting family and, you know, handling dangerous super powers

B) a villain has been making clone hybrids of Clark and Bruce to use as his own weapons. Because the more powerful powers develop later in life, these clones were rapidly aged after creation with only a few surviving the process. Clark and Bruce find one remaining clone, a baby who has not yet been aged up. They are faced with figuring out childcare but also a moral dilemma: if they let the kid age naturally, she will grow up in an unstable body and a face much higher likelihood of dying when the powers develop. If they age her up now, she will miss all her childhood years, but will have a notably higher (though not guaranteed) survival rate when the powers develop. Additionally, who will raise her? This would take place in the current comics world where Bruce is out of resources and family connections, and Clark has just adopted two new twin kids (while dealing with the ramifications of an aged up Jon). Lana Lang and John Henry/Steel have the resources and experience, but can they take this kid? Do they want to? Stephanie plays a smaller role but she is one of the most involved bats in the discussions and early childcare.

More ideas:

Lois Lane as a gun Batman. Bruce's parents are never killed, and he grows up as a philanthropist. Lois, however, has to grow up with her own mother's death and her father's militarization, and raising her sister. As an adult living in Gotham, she starts doing her most dangerous investigative work under the mantle of Batman. She works closely with Bruce (funding her) and Harvey Dent (legal support and her husband). When Harvey's accident happens, it kick starts her turning further and further into violent and vigilante justice, rather than her previous detective-oriented work. She forms a deep friendship with Superman, and helps Bruce raise Dick, Damian, and Tim. She doesn't adopt anyone herself, but she is a mentor to the self-starting hero's in the city, especially Harper and Steph. She has a fairly long fling with Talia. It would really explore how her style of investigation would work within the constrains of her Silver Age ethics. (A variation is where her and Kate grew up as childhood friends and Kate took on the Batwoman mantle in Gotham while Lois became Mothwoman something else in Metropolis)

Golden Age Clark being transferred to Gotham. (This would mix a lot of Pre-Crisis ideas but) radioshow-inspired Clark who isn't really Superman yet; and Superman is an unknown public figure. Most of his work is done as this adventurous yet mild mannered "human" hero, with Superman being an ominous alien form. Early on he strikes up a partnership with a solo Batman (pre-Robin), and a friendship (w benifits) with Bruce Wayne. Lois, despite being given very clear instructions to stay in Metropolis, is brought by her own work to Gotham and into investigating Bruce Wayne. The main center point of this would be the friendship between Clark and Lois, and the loneliness of Bruce

What emotion do you create from?

Pain

You create from pain. It's the deep, overwhelming agony that builds up over a lifetime of suffering. Sometimes you can't tell where your scars ends and you begin. You pour out your pains into your art because you can't bear to hurt this much and have nothing to show for it. Your suffering will be pointless if you can't make something of it, so you make it into art. This is how you reclaim everything you'd otherwise regret, by making those painful experiences into something of worth. Art is a battle to conquer your suffering, to make your agony into something you can take pride in. Every piece is a hard fought victory over something that would have only eaten away at you otherwise. It's proof of your desire to live and heal, to be more than just your wounds.

I've been told i'm a good listener from time to time. I really love to just listen to people talk, so naturally radioshow styled entertainment draws me in, especially when i'm working through new pages and can't take my eyes off the paper. When people have something to say, I'm attentive. I don't always tune out even when people think i'm tuning out, i'm probably tuning in harder than if I were just sitting around doing nothing which has been my boon and my bane for obvious reasons. Emplemon's "downward diary" vlogs are in my cache of things to listen to, but today I noticed a pattern in these videos sometimes and in general with ranting. In a video 30 to 40 minutes long, most of the time will be spent just reiterating the same point and he'll take a long time to move on, angrily rephrasing the same frustration in different ways ten times over. Like making a bunch of pictures with the same shapes rearranged in different places. This is interesting to me. From time to time i'll bring something up that makes me upset lingering in my head, and then bring it up months later knowing it still frustrates me. But this forward cascade style of ranting has a weird feel to it. It's pure mental ventilation, and of course I don't think it's really about being coherent or that's probably not the point of these styles of videos. My relationship to venting in general is that I really hate it. Of course there are times where I can't keep something to myself, if you're the kind of person with strong emotions behind the things you say and experience I think it can be a struggle to keep them in. That being said, I can't take listening to these videos too many times in a row even if I enjoy the topics. I don't think catharsis works as a coping mechanism. Venting negativity is a cathartic habit too, which when allowed to just go unchecked can turn a person into an irrespectable ugly grey brown smelly blob no one wants to be around. That used to be me in highschool, but I didn't understand why it was wrong until I became an adult. The worst part about making something like venting a cathartic habit is it's a lot like a venom which easily spreads and destroys any good qualities a person had, which gets swept up in this vacuous black hole that takes twice as much inner strength to come out of. You create your own echo chamber created by the thickened clouds of your inner thoughts that can cement all kinds of other unhealthy habits, some literal, others personal. The worst aspect of people trapped in the downward spiral is that it is in actuality, a whirlpool that threatens to take in the weak little dinghys and tiny boats of vulnerable people to drown them. If you're a person of strong will, then you'd have the chops to stay away... But I want to reiterate, venting is not the cause of a person becoming miserable. It's just a symptom. Well either way, it can be nice short term entertainment to listen to some guy I don't know talk about how pixar sucks now. But in reality if you ever meet someone and they never, EVER stop complaining about their problems... do yourself a favor and get away.

Musik und Musiker in 2023

Musiker in 2023 – ein Thema, das sehr gerne stiefmütterlich behandelt wird. Auch wenn wir es gerne leugnen, wir alle sind im Zeitalter des Streamings angekommen, und die Uhr lässt sich nunmal nicht zurückdrehen. Dieser Artikel richtet sich in erster Linie an meine Musikerkollegen. (Das Titelbild stammt übrigens aus einem interessanten Artikel aus dem Magazin STEREO.DE)

Ich schreibe dies, weil mir das Thema schon lange auf der Seele liegt. Den Anstoß gab mir ein Post auf Facebook, initiiert von Mark Storey und Brass Moonkey.

Alle versprechen es – keiner tut es

Es ist einfach, sich als Musiker in 2023 über die geringen finanziellen Erträge zu beschweren. Ich persönlich bin kein großer Fan der großen Streamingdienste, ist es doch ein Zeichen unserer Zeit den Dingen keine große Aufmerksamkeit mehr zu schenken. Warum sollte jemand Musik kaufen, wenn es denselben Song oder Titel quasi kostenlos auf @Spotify und Co gibt? Ja klar, um den Künstler in seiner Arbeit zu unterstützen. Das steht jedem Hörer frei – und doch tut es niemand. Vollständigkeitshalber hier ein Link zu meinem Profil auf Spotify – damit Ihr alle mich unterstützen könntet, wenn Ihr denn wolltet 🙂

Das Experiment

Letztes Jahr habe ich folgendes Experiment gestartet: meine neue Musik sollte zuerst in den kostenpflichtigen Diensten wie z.b. Amazon Music erscheinen, und erst nach 6 Wochen auf den Streamingplattformen frei erhältlich sein. Einfach um auszuprobieren, wie weit der gute Wille der Zuhörer (und nicht zuletzt auch meiner Gitarrenschüler) reicht. Exakt eine Kopie wurde verkauft, alle anderen Hörer warteten, bis der Titel kostenlos erhältlich war. Soweit zum Thema “Künstler unterstützen”.

Die Radioshow

Jede Woche produziere ich eine Radioshow “Jørg’s World“, in der ich den Zuhörern die Musik nahebringe, die mich als Musiker und Gitarrist ausmacht. Tatsächlich kaufe ich immer wieder Musik, Alben oder auch einzelne Titel, um Songs legal in der Radioshow verwenden zu können. Während ich anfangs noch 2 Stunden Sendung mit vielen unabhängigen, kleinen Künstlern produziert habe bin ich jetzt dazu übergegangen, nur noch eine Stunde Sendung mit jeweils einem unabhängigen Künstler zu senden. Die Zuhörerzahlen im fünfstelligen Bereich geben mir recht.

Für kleines Geld veröffentlichen

Mittlerweile kann jeder Musiker, Künstler oder auch Band 2023 seine Musik weltweit für kleines Geld veröffentlichen. Als Label arbeite ich mit Horus Music ltd. in England zusammen, die sowohl Labels als auch einzelnen Künstler zur Verfügung stehen. Das beginnt (im Moment, April 2023) ab 20 GBP. Hier bietet sich eine einzigartige Chance für jeden, seine Musik selbst zu veröffentlichen.

So manche Musik bleibt besser im Übungsraum

Das Problem bei der Sache ist, daß eben jene Künstler oft Musik veröffentlichen, die eben nicht der internationalen Norm entspricht. Meist werden die technischen Voraussetzungen nicht erfüllt (-2db Peak Level an -11LUFS), und ich finde teilweise sogar Übungsraum Mitschnitte, die qualitativ besser im Übungsraum geblieben wären. Die Möglichkeit billig und weltweit zu agieren führte dazu, daß Qualität nicht mehr ernst genommen wird. Der kleine Künstler ist ja nun nicht mehr auf ein Label angewiesen, dessen Aufgabenbereich unter anderem die Qualitätskontrolle darstellt. Somit gelangt – verzeiht mir diesen Ausdruck – jeder Mist auf den Markt und stößt reihenweise Hörer ab. Wie soll der Hörer denn die guten von den schlechten Bands unterscheiden? Nun, dann bleibt man als Spotify Benutzer wohl lieber bei den bekannten Bands oder bei den vorgeschlagenen Playlisten. Verständlich, oder?

Meine Musik zwischen teuren Produktionen

Erst kürzlich hatte ich eine Debatte mit einem Freund und Labelkollegen (mx-pro.net), der seit vielen Jahren Musik für sich und auch andere Bands im Studio aufzeichnet und produziert. Er war ziemlich ungehalten, weil ich seine Musik zur Bearbeitung mehrfach zurückgewiesen habe. Er arbeitet ja schließlich schon seit vielen Jahren an einzelnen Songs und auch Alben, und konnte erstmal nicht nachvollziehen, warum ich seine Arbeit zur Veröffentlichung auf dem Label zurückwies.

Das einleuchtende Argument

Das einleuchtende Argument war dann das Folgende: die von uns veröffentlichte Musik erscheint heutzutage (2023) in Playlisten. Das heißt der Hörer hat nicht mehr die CD mit allen Titeln in seinem Auto, sondern platziert einen Song zwischen Gary Moore und Joe Bonamassa. Und deshalb ist es wichtig, Musik nach einem gewissen Standard zu produzieren. Wenn Dein Song zwischen zwei Major-Label Titeln (die zugegebenerweise Tausende von Dollars in der Produktion kosteten) zu dumpf und zu leise erscheint, wird er von der Playlist entfernt. So einfach ist das – Karriere vorbei.

Angebot und Nachfrage

Durch die Möglichkeit günstig und weltweit zu veröffentlichen sind die Kanäle verstopft. Im Moment erscheinen rund 40.000 neue Songs täglich auf den Plattformen. Zwar haben wir die Möglichkeit mit jeder Veröffentlichung Millionen von Menschen zu erreichen, aber dazu gehört mehr als nur ein sauber produzierter Song. Die wenigsten Hörer suchen selbst nach genau Deiner Musik, und nicht die geringen Auszahlungen von Spotify (0,0047€ pro Stream) oder YouTube (0,0001€ per Stream) sind das eigentliche Problem. Es sind die Hörer, die wir nur mit erheblichem finanziellem Aufwand erreichen können.

Fake Dienste

Nicht die Streaming Dienste kosten uns Geld, sondern die zahllosen Fake-Dienste mit Botplays, falschen Erfolgsversprechen oder gar unsinnigen, hochpreisigen Labelverträgen betrügen uns. Tatsächlich stellt uns z.b. Spotify in unserem “Spotify for Artists” Konto alle Informationen zur Verfügung um zu erfahren, wo genau unser Zielpublikum liegt. Und klar, natürlich würde ich mir einen Erlös von 1Cent pro Stream wünschen. Aber solange einige wenige Musiker Millionen Streams verkaufen, wird das wohl nichts werden.

Früher war alles leichter

Nun, ich denke alt genug zu sein um diesen Punkt besprechen zu können. Wieviele Demotapes haben wir denn in den Achtzigern an Plattenlabel verschickt, in der Hoffnung auf einen lukrativen Vertrag? Und die Chance einem Musikscout vorzuspielen lag zumindest für mich hier in Ingolstadt bei Null.

Als dann die Smartphones beliebt wurden konnten wir unser Publikum recht einfach per Email oder SMS zu Konzerten einladen. Trotzdem mussten Poster und Handzettel gedruckt werden, um die Leute zu erreichen. Nein, es war nicht leichter. Nur anders. Und ja, zugegeben, unsere lokalen Fans kamen anfangs zum Konzert, weil der Konkurrenzdruck geringer war. Das junge Internet bot zudem die Möglichkeit, Musik illegal in großer Menge zu downloaden. Die gesamte Musikindustrie wurde schwer geschädigt, und die Idee mit dem “Musik und Streaming für jedermann” wurde geboren. Gewissermaßen als Abgrenzung des Schadens.

Nutzung und Wert von Musik 2023

Ganz ehrlich – meine Generation kannte Schallplatten, CDs, Musikkassetten. Viele Stunden verbrachte ich als Kid mit dem Studium und den Texten der neuesten Iron Maiden Schallplatte, während selbige in Dauerschleife den ganzen Samstag Nachmittag lief. Eine Schallplatte zu kaufen kostete mich mein Taschengeld, stellte also für mich einen erheblichen Wert dar.

Die junge Generation kennt Musik tatsächlich nur als ein Icon auf dem Smartphone. Nichts errinnert mehr daran, wieviele Stunden Übungsraum, Musikunterricht, Ideenfindung und Herzblut im Schaffensprozess steckt. Tatsächlich möchte ich sagen – sie wissen es nicht besser. Und da wundert es mich auch kaum, daß Musik nach 3 Sekunden hineinhören weitergewischt wird, bis etwas Spannendes die Gehörgänge erreicht. Oder gleich von vornherein nur als Playlist Empfehlung im Hintergrund beim Sport läuft. Willkommen in 2023!

Livekonzerte

Jeder mag sie, die monumentalen Livekonzerte von Kiss, Rammstein und den anderen großen, berühmten Künstlern. Da ist ja für die 150€ Konzertkarte schließlich auch etwas geboten. Licht, Feuer und Sound in nie dagewesenen Dimensionen fluten für eineinhalb Stunden den Verstand. Ja, verstehe ich sehr gut. Aber wie sollen denn nun kleine Künstler dagegenhalten? Ich denke wir sind auf das Wohlwollen der Zuhörer angewiesen, die aus der Welle der Beschleunigung austreten müssen. Irgendwann ist ein Maß erreicht, das nicht mehr zu toppen ist. Wir alle als Musiker in 2023 können nur hoffen, daß das geschieht bevor uns Künstlern der Atem ausgegangen ist und die handgemachte Musik nur noch eine nostalgischen Erinnerung darstellt.
