12/9/2023-12/13/2923: The Merchant of Venice
Tumblr media
It is weird how you’ll just be reading along and then an incredibly famous speech pops up. This play has “The quality of mercy is not strained, etc.” and it’s better in context.
I always think of this quote from Franklin P. Adams’s book Nods and Becks:
“Well,” he said, “I’ve got an idea to do a quiz program in reverse. The public sends in questions for a panel of experts — experts of whom you might be one.”
“What questions?” I asked. “As for instance?”
“Well,” he said, “who was the Merchant of Venice?”
“Antonio,” I said.
“That’s right,” he said, obviously astonished by my omniscience. “Most people say Shylock.”
“Not the people I am in the habit of associating with,” I said, with utters and somewhat snobbish truth.
Ha ha! What a jerk! That’s from the introduction to the book, so it is how FPA wanted his readers to think of him. Baffling.
Next up: Henry VI, Part 1

A Poke At Punch
In 1925 New Yorker founding editor Harold Ross wrote that he wanted his new magazine to be “humorous from a sophisticated viewpoint” and “record the situations of everyday life among intelligent and substantial people as do the English magazines, notably Punch, except that our bent is more satirical, sharper.” Jan. 13, 1934 cover by Constantin Alajalov. Sharper indeed, as was demonstrated in the…

How Common is Neurodivergence?
Tumblr media
[image id: poster of "How Common is Neurodivergence?.” There are 12 circles and five small images: an image of a brain, speech bubbles, an infinity sign, a person reading, and a person surrounded by arrows and balls. Each of the 12 circles has a percentage representing how common a particular form of neurodivergence is written in Open Dyslexic font. Full transcript, more information, and references under the cut.]
More Information
Forms of neurodivergence represented here are focused on neurodevelopmental disorders.
These percentages are representative of percentage in general population and do not reflect percentages within neurotypes which are often higher due to co-occurrence being the norm, rather than the exception, within neurodevelopmental disorders; for example, 33-45% of people with ADHD will also have dyslexia (Butterworth & Kovas, 2013), whereas only 10% of the general population are dyslexic (British Dyslexia Association [BDA], 2023).
Certain neurodivergencies are often underrepresented and under-reported, so the percentages are likely to be higher; for example, one study suggests that rates for FASD in the UK may be as high as 17% (McQuire et al., 2019).
Some of the neurodivergencies represented here are umbrella terms and percentages given are representative of all forms of neurodiversity belonging to that term; for example, SpLds include dyslexia which is at a rate of 10% (BDA, 2023) and dyscalculia which is at 3-7% (Haberstroh & Schulte-Körne., 2019). Tic Disorders at 1% are another example here, as this is inclusive of Tourette Syndrome which is at 0.6%, and around 1 in 5 individuals exhibit tics at some point during childhood (Cavanna et al., 2017).

2 and a half weeks until JC passes Cactus Jack!
It took me a little bit to figure out what you were referencing, but yes, Jimmy Carter will pass John Nance Garner as the longest-living President or Vice President in American history on September 18th. Such sad news to hear today. An amazing, and enigmatic actor someone who deserved to be called a star.💫

Love this trio, and this catchy song. Composed by Roger Edens, with lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green...this cute number (referring to the shortstop/second base/first base double-play) is modeled on a poem titled "Tinker to Evers to Chance" (written by Franklin P. Adams in 1910). It was inspired by the Chicago Cubs infield of 1903-1910, whose players (after whom the poem is titled), helped the Cubs win four National League Championships and two World Series, from 1906-1910. 🙌 I'll put their pics, as well as the sheet music from this adorable song, below. Incidentally, Gene (who, along with Stanley Donen) conceived the idea for this movie, was a huge baseball fan. In fact, his childhood ambition was to play shortstop for the Pittsburgh Pirates. ⚾️ Gene definitely would have been a great shortstop...but thank goodness he decided on an entertainment career, instead! 😉 Jules Munshin, Frank Sinatra & Gene Kelly, in "Take Me Out To The Ball Game" (1949). 🤍
