Bilbo: You have to apologise to Thranduil.
Thorin: Fine.
Thorin: Unfuck you, or whatever.

The twinkifcation of Bilbo is weird I’m used to fandoms doing that I’m not naive as to why and I have just gotten into the hobbit fandom so maybe I have only seen a small fraction of fan art that does it but Bilbo is a 50 year old man(hobbit whatever)and it’s specifically stated that hobbits eat more than three meals a day so no he does not look like a twink. He is also insane his home gets invaded by 12 dwarves and an old man in a house dress and is basically dared into going on a dangerous quest to steal from a basically god like being to him he has no experience in stealing at all but says FUCK IT WHY NOT and then basically lucks out by finding a weird ring from this weird fucked up dude in a cave and then decided not to tell anyone.
Point is Bilbo is definitely gay but he is not a useless little twink who always needs to be protected that man is insane let him be insane.
Long rant but I just have been needing to say that for awhile

I really enjoy analyzing Bilbo's speech from the first Hobbit movie. This scene has so much depth that I could do multiple deep dives on it. People tend to focus on Thorin in this scene, but what I like to watch is Bilbo's body language. Take the gif below, for example. Bilbo just finished his speech, yet he continues looking at Thorin. You can tell he is fully aware he held eye contact for too long; just look at how he fidgets right after. Even after breaking the extended eye contact, he looks back at Thorin, TWICE.
Here it is again in slow motion. Pay attention to Bilbo's eyes. This is right after he breaks off eye contact.
This is in addition to the 3 seconds of prolonged eye contact they just shared. Below are unedited gifs of how long they stood there staring at each other. This is as much a turning point in their relationships as Carrock.
This is the moment Thorin truly starts to see Bilbo in a different light, and the moment Bilbo starts to realize that he craves Thorin's approval more than he thinks. That's why he looked so devastated 30 minutes later when Thorin was saying all those seemingly harsh things on Carrock. I think, in a way, those 3-second stares followed by awkward looking away is their "Oh, oh" moment. They're both starting to realize that whatever is between them is more than the sum of the quest they're on.
Also, look at Balin being absolute shipper trash.

I love the way Bilbo looks awkward while Thorin is being very gay with him. This makes Bilbo EVEN more embarrassed for hiding the Arkenstone...

It’s canon that Balin knew how Thorin felt about Bilbo so imagine the convo like
Thorin: ...
Balin: are you okey?
Thorin: what?
Balin: you’ve been looking at Bilbo for 5 minutes without blinking
Thorin: oh
Balin: is there something you wish to tell me?
then Thorin starts his rumbling about Bilbo and he doesn’t. shut. up. until the end of the quest

Bilbo: Don't kill me I have a boyfriend.
Orc Captain: You think I care about that?
Bilbo: No this isn't a plea for mercy, it's a warning.
Orc Captain: What-
Thorin (appearing out of nowhere): ARE YOU READY TO DIE?!?!

thorin was only mean to bilbo because:
1. thorin doesnt like having feelings and how dare he he attracted to this hobbit
2. thorin was concerned for bilbo, and to hide it he kept telling bilbo he should just go home, ‘cause then he would he safe.

Happy 6 years to that one Bagginshield drawing I did on 2018, when I entered highschool and I was 12. Today I am 18 and graduated yesterday; I'm still as in love with this pairing as I was all those years ago.
This is a redraw! Old version under cut

The Hobbit book is less gay than the movie, but I still greatly enjoy the relationship between Thorin and Bilbo in the book. When Thorin smiles all proud while locked up in an Elven dungeon, noting how much he's come to care for and respect Bilbo? Yeah that does things to my heart
