Yesssss! Fairytale video les goooo. I really loved this video from Noralities as she goes DEEP in the Sleeping Beauty lore.
I've been having trouble writing for the longest time, and this video made me feel excited to write again.
I loved taking folklore class, and this reminded me of it 😁

it's actually so interesting to me how much control the villain has over a narrative. to a certain extent, they're the ones who determine the genre intensity. like, the hero always reacts to the villain, so the worst thing the villain is willing to do is usually the worst thing that's going to happen in the narrative.
of course, exceptions apply, but i also think that's something that can create some really interesting genre subversions. the hero thinks they're in an after school special until the villain brutally murders someone, and then the hero is forced to take things MUCH more seriously. conversely, the hero wants to be in a dark, gritty, serious superhero story, but the villain only deals in whacky hijinks that ultimately don't cause any bodily harm, which might cause the hero to (consciously or not) try to push the villain to their limits—or maybe just live in perpetual frustration instead. there are so many possibilities.

One aspect of science fiction that has fallen out of practice is the concept that what substances are safe for humans to eat, might be toxic to extra terrestrials.
Such as in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, where according to the story, "Wrong Turn" cranberry juice has the same effect on Utroms as booze has on humans.
This would be interesting factoid, made even more interesting by the Utrom in question, Glurin, having drunk quite a bit of juice before testing a dimensional portal on Raphael, Donatello, and Casey Jones.

"this romantic lead's jealous outburst over a minor thing would make sense in a teen romance, but she's a twentysomething university student!"
OP i have upsetting news for you about
1. The wildly varied maturity levels of real life adults (especially full-time students who were teens not too long ago) and
2. A common genre trope in romance & melodrama

Seeing as “wrong genre savvy” can lead to comedy or horror, wondering how you could keep all canon events in Dracula but frame it as a comedy where everyone except Dracula is reacting as if the novel is an Austen-style romantic comedy

How does one examine the use of language and style in a science fiction or fantasy work?
Science fiction and fantasy literature often feature imaginative and otherworldly settings, characters, and themes, which can make the genre challenging to write and read. The use of language and style in these works plays an essential role in bringing the fictional world and its characters to life. Examining the use of language and style in science fiction and fantasy works can help readers…

In all fairness, the central conceit of most romance films is that people are unrealistically terrible, which doesn't feel like it has to be a convention of the genre
people who watch musicals and bitch about how it doesn’t make sense that the characters randomly burst into song are so funny to me. babe it’s literally a musical like this is the standard of the genre what did you expect

Interior Chinatown, it's about gentrification, it's about generational trauma, it's about community building, it's about racist scapegoating, it's about police corruption, it's about the pressures of immigrant parenthood, it's about the different expectations for different children and the way it can break them, it's about the meat grinder of capitalism replacing and reusing the lower class like nameless murder victims in a police procedural, it's about the system and its inescapablity, it's about the falacy of the American Dream, it's about urban decay and being abandoned by economic forces, it's about cultural appropriation and tokenism, it's about grief, it's about Jimmy O. Yang kicking ass and looking sexy

I do find it interesting that Benoit Blanc's dad was a cop, and he chose to be a private detective. Like, if you grow up with a police officer then it feels like the decision to become an amateur crimesolver is actively and pointedly a decision to *not* become a cop.

WOW this has been ROUGH in the Life Events category of things, but. slowly crawling out of that. hopefully
this was the opening scene for a something I started writing after watching the Manben inverview with Nishi Keiko and thinking back to all the classic shoujo manga I stayed up reading back in the day, like damn that's so true Urasawa Naoki

it's partially a love letter to all the greats of the genre that I read, and also to the late night teleseryses that captivated me over the years lmao. it'd be nice to find the time to tackle it properly as a comic, but I'm having fun working on it recreationally :)
✨but since it's recreational, some character info✨
the first character seen is lawrence 'law' valenciano (late 30s), the one with the glasses is cris volante (mid-later 20s). law works at a karinderya, cris is an extremely broke university student.

So "a kid dies in this movie" is the horror version of Ned Stark's execution for fantasy fans!
Because there's a fantasy trope that you don't kill POV characters (not that GRRM is the first/only one to subvert it) and Ned Stark, a POV character for the entire first season/book a Game of Thrones, getting his head chopped off was the signal that no one is safe.
In my experience, horror fans are by and large lovely people with a very healthy relationship to their genre of choice, but sometimes they fuck up and say something that in their ears sounds very affirmative of the movie of discussion and to everyone else sounds like the most sinister shit.

every other crime fiction author looked at Sherlock Holmes and said "hmm, he never shows any interest in women and he hates small talk, this must be because he is incredibly psychologically disturbed due to some dark backstory. we should make this the standard for detective characters going forward"
my brother in christ, have you considered that maybe he's just gay and autistic?

"Yona is being selfish"
have you considered that she has no assurances that any promises being made will be upheld?
from her point of view, the dragon gods have only hurt her friends and threatened everything she loves, she has NO reason to trust them!
The dragon gods are acting like her father did, denying her the agency to make her own choices even when she states what she wants loud and clear. The threats to her country are being made BY THESE DRAGON GODS, these threats are not some immutable fact, they have a place of origin, and she refuses to accept ANY of this.
Because she's not the spoiled selfish princess her father sheltered from everything anymore
She's a woman who has seen the world at its best and its worst, and is determined to forge a path ahead with her own hands, with the people she cares about, for the country she cares about
Yona is choosing to have agency, even when gods are trying to strip her of it. Their threats are threats, and she will see this mess they have made and fix it.
The dragon gods are being selfish.
Why do you want Yona to give in to these demands? To bow her head to the ones proclaiming to know what's best for her and her people? Who keep adding threats to what she loves JUST TO MANIPULATE HER INTO DOING WHAT THEY WANT?
The point of Akatsuki no Yona is not that "Soo-Won has always been right to discard all emotion and focus solely on saving the country" OR that "Good emotions are all you need, you must never face any hardship and it will all work out okay"
The point is Yona's journey into finding a 3rd path, a balance.
She can love her father and think he was not fit to be king. She can still care deeply for Soo-Won, and think he makes a better king, and yet be hurt by his actions.
And she can mend all the pain of the past, and stop the cycle of revenge, and stop the cycle of pain and hurt for EVERYONE. Her country, her dragons, her people, her friends.
It's not being selfish to refuse to give in to these demands. It's simply refusing to play by rules others have made which state there are only two paths, when you can see three.
