Some people don't have phones, some phones have broken cameras, some phones aren't online.

We should not pay rent to tech companies for the privilege of existing in the society that predates them.

I don't know I'm not done talking about it. It's insane that I can't just uninstall Edge or Copilot. That websites require my phone number to sign up. That people share their contacts to find their friends on social media.

I wouldn't use an adblocker if ads were just banners on the side funding a website I enjoy using and want to support. Ads pop up invasively and fill my whole screen, I misclick and get warped away to another page just for trying to read an article or get a recipe.

Every app shouldn't be like every other app. Instagram didn't need reels and a shop. TikTok doesn't need a store. Instagram doesn't need to be connected to Facebook. I don't want my apps to do everything, I want a hub for a specific thing, and I'll go to that place accordingly.

I love discord, but so much information gets lost to it. I don't want to join to view things. I want to lurk on forums. I want to be a user who can log in and join a conversation by replying to a thread, even if that conversation was two days ago. I know discord has threads, it's not the same. I don't want to have to verify my account with a phone number. I understand safety and digital concerns, but I'm concerned about information like that with leaks everywhere, even with password managers.

I shouldn't have to pay subscriptions to use services and get locked out of old versions. My old disk copy of photoshop should work. I should want to upgrade eventually because I like photoshop and supporting the business. Adobe is a whole other can of worms here.

Streaming is so splintered across everything. Shows release so fast. Things don't get physical releases. I can't stream a movie I own digitally to friends because the share-screen blocks it, even though I own two digital copies, even though I own a physical copy.

I have an iPod, and I had to install a third party OS to easily put my music on it without having to tangle with iTunes. Spotify bricked hardware I purchased because they were unwillingly to upkeep it. They don't pay their artists. iTunes isn't even iTunes anymore and Apple struggles to upkeep it.

My TV shows me ads on the home screen. My dad lost access to eBook he purchased because they were digital and got revoked by the company distributing them. Hitman 1-3 only runs online most of the time. Flash died and is staying alive because people love it and made efforts to keep it up.

I have to click "not now" and can't click "no". I don't just get emails, they want to text me to purchase things online too. My windows start search bar searches online, not just my computer. Everything is blindly called an app now. Everything wants me to upload to the cloud. These are good tools! But why am I forced to use them! Why am I not allowed to own or control them?

No more!!!!! I love my iPod with so much storage and FLAC files. I love having all my fics on my harddrive. I love having USBs and backups. I love running scripts to gut suck stuff out of my Windows computer I don't want that spies on me. I love having forums. I love sending letters. I love neocities and webpages and webrings. I will not be scanning QR codes. Please hand me a physical menu. If I didn't need a smartphone for work I'd get a "dumb" phone so fast. I want things to have buttons. I want to use a mouse. I want replaceable batteries. I want the right to repair. I grew up online and I won't forget how it was!

1. How to setup 2FA on your accounts

As some of you may know, my friend @why-its-kai's Discord account was taken over this morning by a scammer.

The scam they used was this one, or close enough; but anyway, the exact specifics don't matter.

What matters is, it can happen to you. It can happen to anyone.

The good news is, you can learn how to protect yourself. Making some small changes can already improve your online security by leaps and bounds.

Protect yourself with 2FA

Two-factor authentication, or 2FA, isn't a silver bullet -- but it exponentially increases your online safety by adding an extra step to the login process that a hacker/scammer does not have access to.

Every account that you care about (and even those you don't) should have some form of 2FA enabled.

Especially email -- should your email become compromised, this can become a catastrophe.

(For websites that don't support 2FA, use a burner email!)

What 2FA should I use?

2FA can take many forms, from the highly convenient (SMS, email) to the highly secure (security keys), but one thing is certain:

Any form of 2FA is better than nothing.

The simplest forms of 2FA are phone number or email. While these are very easy to use, they are unfortunately not very secure.

Still, I repeat: despite their flaws, these forms of 2FA are absolutely, 100% better than not having any 2FA at all.

On the other end of the spectrum, security keys (like for example a Yubikey) are extremely secure, but they cost money and are a bit of a hassle at time. I use them, but for most people, it's overkill.

What you want is an authenticator app.

Important

A note, before we go on…

If you enable multiple forms of 2FA, how secure your account is will depend on your weakest link.

For example, if you enable SMS authentication AND register a security key, your account will only be as safe as the SMS authentication. The security key is essentially useless.

In other words, the least secure form of 2FA you add determines the overall security of your account.

Sometimes, less is more!

Authenticator Apps

First, choose a free, reputable authenticator. Google Authenticator is a good choice. So are Aegis Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator.

For simplicity, we'll go with Google Authenticator; the process is rather similar for most authenticators.

First, download the app from your app store and install it on your phone.

Enrolling Gmail into GA

Securing your email should be your number 1 priority, so let's enroll a Google account to Google Authenticator.

Let's enable two-step verification first.

Phone number is better than nothing, but not very safe (SMS verification can be spoofed), so let's click on "Add authenticator app".

Click on "Set up authenticator". Google will generate a QR-code.

Next, go back to your phone and click on the little multicolored cross. It will bring up a menu; click on "scan a QR code".

Go ahead and scan the QR code.

Congratulations, you have enrolled your Google account!

Now, whenever you are asked for a 2FA code, just open the app and copy/paste it.

Note: the codes are stored locally on your phone.

Enabling 2FA on Discord

The process is fairly similar. Go to Settings > My Account:

Click on "Enable Authenticator App". You will be prompted for your password. Enter it.

Download Google Authenticator if you haven't already. Scan the QR code as described above.

Do take the time to download your backup codes as well!

As explained above, I personally do not recommend setting up SMS authentication here, since authenticator apps are supported, as this weakens the overall security of your account for little benefit.

Project development

Project Title: Time Fragment: Innovation Dialogue between AI and Humanity

In Time Fragments: The Dialogue between AI and Human Innovation, we hope to explore the creative thinking and methods of AI and human beings in a limited time by exploring the creative problem of "anything you can think of at this moment". The introduction of this problem has brought our understanding of time and space into a new dimension, and it is also the initial driving force for us to try to understand and explore human innovative thinking and AI generation logic.

Through the form of Google Forms, we have collected the answers of a group of students and converted their links into QR codes, so that students can quickly access and respond. This process makes artistic creation collectivised and collaborative to some extent, with a real-time and real-time characteristic, which is in sharp contrast to the traditional artistic creation model.

Unable to come to the scene to communicate with our classmates in person, our plan had to be adjusted. We decided to use AI to achieve our goal. We enter these prompts into Midjourney, allowing AI to generate corresponding images in a limited time to show AI's interpretation and expression of these prompts. This transformation of the creative process actually allows us to have a deeper exploration of the similarities and differences between AI and human creative thinking.

With the help of the virtual reality painting tool Tilt Brush, we have created a gallery showing these AI-generated images in the virtual space. This gallery allows us to combine the creations of human beings and AI in the form of graphic paintings, so that viewers can enjoy them in the virtual world. The application of mixed reality technology enables viewers to deeply experience the dialogue and collision between AI and human beings in the process of creation in the process of participation and appreciation.

In the process of this creation, we have a deeper understanding of concepts such as time, space, innovative thinking, AI generation logic, etc. Although the final work is somewhat different from our original intention, this process makes us think more about the possibility and interaction between AI and human creation.

We believe that AI will play a more important role in artistic creation in the future. Combined with more mixed reality technologies, we look forward to creating more in-depth and interesting experiences in future artistic practises, and more in-depth discussions on AI and human creation.

How to set up B1 label maker to connect Bluetooth?

10.3) Sticker Making - QR codes

Towards the end of the sticker making process there were few jobs left to do which were the QR code and the feedback link. I had considered previously creating a website for the audience to leave feedback on. I had asked around the studio for places that people had used previously to create websites and there was a few that people recommended, however a lot had created subscriptions as they required payments. I had come across good sights which allows you to create websites for free and so I had asked people that I know had experience with the software about the kinds of features it had. Unfortunately I discovered that the website styles that you make on this platform are more information based as oppose to interactive. While it would've been nice to create a whole website for the result of the project I did also think as though this would be very time consuming and that, at this stage, I needed to complete the link and QR code so that I could launch the project. This is where I thought of making a simple and straightforward google form. Here I can directly ask the audience the questions that I would like responses to while still having a platform that explains the project in slightly more detail. After a tutorial I discussed this decision and we agreed that this sounded like it'd work for the best, it felt as thought was just enough to prompt interaction without overwhelming the audience or giving them so much to see/read through, where they may potentially disengage from the project. I suggested that I'd simply leave an open text box with the title suggesting some form of feedback for the designer, and Lara had a nice idea of suggesting the audience notes where they discovered the sticker. This would be interesting as it'd be nice to know where people have picked up on the stickers and even potentially spot trends/areas that they were not/less noticed. I had drafted the introduction/welcome information that explains the project and in this tutorial I wanted to get this reviewed, we both agreed that it shared just enough information about the project so that people can understand it, and that the main focus was the feedback opportunities that were listed below the description. I later added in the "Where did you find me?" question and then started editing the appearance of the form. While there was not lots of freedom on the appearance of the form, there were few options to alter the look to make it more unique. I found that there was an option to change the font of the form and they had a typewriter choice, and so I altered the text of the form so that it matched the design of the stickers. I think that this made it quite a nice and cohesive extension of the stickers.

After the google form was created I just needed to create a QR code for the link. I had tested on multiple websites and was met with a similar problem to the website making search. I would create QR codes and then before saving, there was a payment requirement. I later discovered that adobe had a program that allowed you to create QR codes for free. I went ahead with this QR code making software and very shortly had a live functioning QR code and feedback form. I then took the QR code to photoshop so that I could alter its appearance, giving it a similar look to the stickers. This cohesive nature between sticker to QR code was important to me because I needed it to be clear that the QR code was related to the sticker. I used the original sticker preset for scale, to create the best size for the QR codes. I envisioned these to be like little stamps that would be posted alongside the main stickers. After gaging the appropriate size I edited the stickers, adding colour and some text. This was quite a simple process, adding a similar border to the QR codes with a small friendly instruction, I feel as though the little instruction made it more like a small step in the whole interaction with the stickers. I proceeded with the same process that I did with the main stickers, making copies of the QR codes in each of the colours and filling an A4 sheet with as many stickers that would fill the page. This created 40 stickers per A4 page, so I knew that I'd need at least 3 copies of these sticker pages.

After I had completed the QR codes design I went back to see Laura so that she could oversee the printing process with the new sticker sheets that I had bought. We altered the document so that it was a flattened image in a PDF format, this making it easier to print and access the correct printer properties. After this process was complete it was simply a case of putting the sticker paper in the side tray of the printer facing the correct way up, this was crucial as it ensures the designs are printed on to the side of the sticker sheet with the adhesion. Luckily the sheets were each labelled so this was quite straightforward. After receiving my first printed copy, I noticed had a similar problem to when I printed my prototypes, in that the sheet had printed much darker than what I had hoped. This was okay as I had plenty more sheets to work with, and the QR codes were still usable. It was the perfect first try! I then went back to the photoshop document and started to, like I did with the stickers, making them all more muted and slightly paler. I then printed this copy to see if the alterations were successful, and closer resembled the colours used on the stickers. These versions were much better and much better suited, I printed a further two sheets just to ensure that I had enough for each of the stickers. I thought also that there could be multiple QR codes for every sticker as this may increase intrigue and interaction.

Now all of the QR codes and Stickers were printed, it was simply a case of putting them up and waiting for the feedback to come back!

I will add this, if you are social media savvy and are put off by the boomers orgs terrible communication : OFFER THEM HELP ON THAT FRONT.

Sometimes the most knowledgeble fauna enthousiasts can speak for hours about habitats and conservation efforts but can't tell an open agenda public event from their own personal calendar ! Helping older orgs have better communication tools is a really good way to direct public attention to the local real life events !

It's not enough to say "it's easy, just use x y or z service", because it's easy to YOU but to someone even a bit older that can save them tons of time putting an event together, and means a lot for folks looking at the event to know exactly what they can expect !

My go-to list for community event planning under the cut (be warned that I'm very french so most of my tools will reflect that)

A fixed event page that will be the sole online place where updates will be made. Can be facebook, can be Openagenda if your org has an account with them, or even framagenda.

Event page should be concise and clear. WHAT is going to happen (you have no idea how many flyers I have seen that don't explain what an even is even doing), WHO is organising, WHEN and where is it taking place, for HOW LONG, FOR WHOM is the event for, WHAT should the public bring (clothes, tools), and is there any ACCESSIBILITY accomodations or concerns (a late night walk in the woods can be fine for a visually impaired person, but probably isn't the best idea for parents with strollers or people with mobility issues)

It's not mandatory but in some situations (limited place etc) it is good to have a tool for people to sign up. For the love of every thing that is holy please use an open tool and not a google one !! I use framaform to collect a name for the inscription (doesn't have to be an actual name/surname), the number of people in this group, if there are kids and how many, and one email adress to send updates to.

Also copy/paste the most important informations about the event in the form + in the confirmation mail.

If you use a form to make attendees sign up PLEASE RESPECT THE RGPD : tell folks who is getting their infos, why they're going to be used, for how long, and who/where to contact if they don't want said infos to be kept. Not just because it's mandatory, but because I feel like it's good ��tiquette to tell people what's going on with their data.

JSMUST BECAUSE THERE IS A SIGN UP ONLINE FORM DOESN'T MEAN YOU CAN'T TAKE SIGN UP THOUGH MAIL. Lots of folk can be confused by that medium. Don't be dicks, and add them to the list even if they didn't exactly follow the steps.

Always link to the event page when you talk about it on diverse platforms. Keep a note of where you've shared it, so if there are really major updates (date, cancelation, full) you can update them, but minor changes should stay on the fixed event page

Have a contact email fully visible on the event page for questions, and always sign your answers "X, for Y organisation" if you don't have an email with them.

HAVE PHYSICAL COMMUNICATION MEDIA. You don't need expensive good quality paper flyers. Get a Creative Commons licenced picture on wikimedia commons, slap the most important infos on it in a serif-free font with a background for better readability, put the link to the event (you can use a QR Code if you have a trusted generator) AND the contact mail, print it on recycled paper and voilà !

Don't keeo communication online. Go to your local businesses to ask if they can put it in their window. Target shops or businesses with different age groups publics. Go to elder homes, pubs, tattoo parlors, bakeries, liquor stores, libraries (they will probably be thrilled and sometimes offer to print more for you !), driving schools, groceries stores, vets, doctors, schools... You must be prepared to face a few No, but usually people are interested in spreading local events !

After the event, ask attendees if they'd like to be informed of future ones, keep the contact of those who want it, and don't be afraid to ask if they'd like to get involved in concrete organisations too !

I hope it wasn't too much of a derailing wreck, but I recently started helping and working with local orgs and everyone was so thankful that I took those parts in charge because most of them are not comfortable with computers and were at a loss about what to do to spread their events, while it all felt completely natural for me. Being chronically online can be an advantage if you use it to make real life actions gain momentum !

In light of The Situation happening right now in the USA, I highly recommend retreating from social media as much as possible and immersing in real life to clean out the gunk of social media type activism

Try as best as you can to track down some old retired folks who have been doing the activism thing for decades. And just old retired folks who care about anything, anything at all.

This crap with labeling the generations and talking like "boomers" are this way and "gen Z" is that way, it's silly to the point of being dangerous.

Younger generations in USA kind of reject the whole thing about respecting and valuing your elders but the truth is, all different kinds of cultures have these values and they're right. Elders have more knowledge and understanding than you can ever find written down anywhere.

And they WANT and NEED young people to connect with them. Elders are suffering more from our society of isolation than anybody else. And they are energized and invigorated by having young people to share their knowledge, information, and stories with.

So often I have been in a room of people majority over 65, wondering where all the "politically aware" gen Z are. And the answer is, they're on social media, arguing with strangers and stressing themselves out, while the "boomers" are getting shit done.

Social media isolates young activists from the most experienced and knowledgeable of all. And it's a dangerous trap for people of all ages who feel lonely and afraid. Either radicalizing them into hateful ideology and cult-style groups, or convincing them of apathy and pointlessness.

go outside, find the elders that know everything, get shit done. This is my advice
