Does anyone know an alternative spell checker/grammar checker than ProWriting Aid and Grammarly?
Both are using AI now and I’m trying to avoid them.

💬 Part of a traditional practice that’s still used today, proofreading marks help proofreaders identify errors in printed documents such as manuscripts.

Microsoft Word: [grammar check] one punctuation mark is all that’s needed
Me: … it’s the end of dialogue though? Like, the quotation marks are needed here

FFXIVWrite 2024 Day 16 — Third-rate
No spoilers, time of occurrence is ambiguous
“Hey,” Cynthia says, twirling motes of aether around her fingers in some type of unknown pattern, “did you know I used to be absolutely terrible at conjury?”
“Surely not,” Alisaie replies. “I can maybe see you not being the best when you started, but terrible feels impossible.”
“Nope. Terrible. Absolutely the worst of all the kids in my village.”
“Then how did you get so good? Did you just work that hard, or are Viera just that much better at conjury than everyone else?”
Cynthia laughs, the distraction making the aether dancing in her hand flicker and fade away. “No, no. We may be a bit more sensitive to aether, but it’s nothing like that! In fact, if I were to try using the usual techniques, I’d still be gods-awful at it. I remember coming home one day and crying about how bad I was at it. After calming me down, my mom told me she knew a ‘secret way’ to use magic that might help me. And it did.”
“Is that why your conjury feels so much different than normal? And here I thought it was just a completely different version taught to you in the first place.”
“No, you’d be surprised at how similar Gridanian conjury is to what I was originally taught… which means I’m also bad at that kind. The Conjurer’s Guild did not like me.”
“And yet the elementals seem to like you just fine.”“Yup. They seem to see something in my wacky magic.

not to liveblog my writing process but editing is just like ohhh the agonies. squinting at dialogue like okay i need to convey this information but hide this information--fuck if i change that, then i need to rewrite the previous bit... and i really drafted this bit sloppily so I need to buff up the descriptions here anyways....
like. admittedly. to be a little egotistic i think i am good at it in that i can recognize the things i want to fix up. i just hate having to then. fix it up.

I don’t mind having spellcheck function as long as it’s not automatic and I can curate my dictionary.
1. I used to write anime fanfic. I still write fiction that may include two or more languages: this requires me to allow multiple dictionaries to be used.
2. I create conlangs, and no spellchecker is built to recognize my constructed languages—and I don’t want to fill up my natural language dictionaries with conlang terms.
3. Sometimes errors are valid words despite being misspelled in context. “Time” in place of “Tim” or “rime” (which autocorrected to “time” as I was composing this message).
googledocs you are getting awfully uppity for something that can’t differentiate between “its” and “it’s” correctly

Don’t give up on your writing just because your first draft wasn’t perfect. Take it as an opportunity to prove to yourself you can do better.
Take a look at an infographic that lists free tools that will help you bring your writing to a new level. The infographic is a bit outdated, but it lists lesser-known tools and platforms that are worth giving a try.

“Even with his brother is gone”
Yeah… and that makes sense how? Even if that’s supposed to be the possessive rather than a contraction, that still doesn’t make any sense— ‘gone’ isn’t a noun.

I hate whatever "spell/grammar check" I cannot turn off and cannot change keyboard away from is in Android now. No, I did not mean "be", I typed "bad" for a reason. No, I did not mean "a", I typed "-" for a reason, it is a valid part of the English language. No, me making that plural was not a mistake you stupid piece of shit, I am referencing multiples. Stop changing words wholesale the instant I finish typing them, you don't know what the sentence is going to say.
Everything takes twice as long to type because I have to stop and reread and often retype things because I don't catch that my words are getting changed sometimes three words typed after the fact. And stop trying to censor my words. I meant what I said and if you think that word was bad I can and will make every word in the English language associated with sex and pornography.
Give me back Microsoft Word 97 type spell check and leave it at that.

I decided to a do some heavy editing on my series Collar Crimes because it's not flowing the way I want it to. There was like a chapter that was going to happen between chapter 4 and 5 but I didn't add and now I'm like I really, really, really, want to add it in somehow. Pad out the events, add some slice of life maybe?
Also gonna do it for the Kamisato Ayato series. Was originally gonna be episodic, but the latest chapter ended up connecting, so I'm gonna see if I can pad it out more. Yup.
Truth be told, I didn't grammar check when I first started here, and oh my god the google docs grammar check is a godsend. Gonna fix those too.

Can anyone in the writer side of tumblr recommend a good spell and grammar checker? I use Firefox as a browser and currently use LanguageTool rn but I'm looking for alternatives to try out.

20240102 Trivia Tuesday
I have this app on my Mac, it's called Winston and it is a typewriter simulator. Iuse it when I have a hard time writing in a regular word processor which means at times when I am easily distracted and the spelling and grammar checking, the buttons is just another disctraction, along with the potential of other open tabs.
I used to own a typewriter before I moved countries, it was just one too many and heavy things to try to bring with me. I was so happy when I found this app. Even if I had brought my typewriter with me, I would probably not use it since it would most likely drive my partner absolutely insane (which I'd prefer not to).
They can't even stand when I pluck on the guitar… Which is not their fault tbh, it's just an inconvenience to us both since I like it and they don't. XX AXXXX And somtimes I just like writing on this one for shits and XXXX giggles, it's just great fun!
