“I’ve got these lot behind me, who the fuck is gonna stop us?” This question, asked by Louis Tomlinson moments after headlining his Away From Home festival for the first time two years ago, has become something of a mantra for his fans. It’s been shared on social media ad infinitum, worn on homemade merch, waved proudly on banners and signs, and shouted to the rafters at his concerts. Headlining a sold-out show at London’s O2 Arena on Friday night, it seems clear that the answer to his question is that no one ever will.

Taking place just over a year after the release of his celebrated second album ‘Faith In The Future’, and almost twelve years to the day after One Direction released their first record ‘Up All Night’, in the city where 1D formed and where he played his first full headline show as a solo artist, this might be the greatest full-circle moment of Louis’ career so far. But tonight isn’t a nostalgia trip, and there’s little time spent walking down memory lane. Instead, this show is all about the here and now, celebrating how a shared passion for music and the community that creates can build something that feels like magic.

From the moment he walks out on centre stage in front of his fans, Louis Tomlinson is at home – and his fans make themselves at home right along with him. Opening with ‘The Greatest’ – a song written for and about crowds and nights like tonight – it’s clear that, though it might’ve taken him a long time to get back here, stages like this one are where he belongs.

For tonight’s landmark show, he pulls out all the stops. A specially recorded video introduction? New and improved light shows? Pyrotechnics? A strings section on stage?! At London’s O2 Arena, Louis has it all. His dedication to making the night special is met by his fans in equal measure, using phone torches and synchronised apps to create light shows of their own.

A distinctive figure in trackies and a vest, Louis commands the room with ease. Playfully flipping fans off while singing, crouching down between songs to be closer to the people he’s talking to, he’s the star with his name in lights, but his show remains just as much about celebrating with the people that support him as it is about celebrating the music. Any mention of this sold-out show’s success is talked about as a collective. “O2, sold out?! You lot, unbelievable, right?!” he congratulates the crowd between songs.

Even when he’s talking about his own emotions, saying, “This might be the first time in my career where I have been under pressure tonight, and I feel fucking great about it,” it’s with acknowledgement to the people filling the room who make what he does possible. “You don’t have that confidence onstage unless you know you’ve got the best fucking fans in the world,” he states. “I never feel like I can find the words to ever truly thank you, but thank you, thank you, thank you.”

Restyling old songs to fit the sound he found for himself on his latest album (sir, we’re going to need a recording of ‘Back To You’ rock version ASAP) and giving a nod to his home county with a cover of fellow South Yorkshire sensations Arctic Monkeys between leading rapturous crowd singalongs to fan favourite hits, this is Louis Tomlinson at the top of his game.

“Look at what we’ve fucking done!” he yells to the room mid-set. The message, it seems, is clear: ain’t no one stopping Louis Tomlinson now.

rules: list five things you never get tired of writing. it can be tropes, themes, characters, phrases, whatever brings you joy. then tag five people!

Angst - I have depression and go through random bouts of late night sadness and the easiest way to work through it sometimes is to just write something sad and cry while doing so. Also sometimes you just gotta put your fav ships through pain to find the happiness in the end. Just like depression. You go through the pain, but happiness is right around the corner.

Smut - you absolutely cannot stop me from writing smut. I’ve been doing it since I was 12 years old and it’s something I just know I can write. I felt weird for being so young and liking something so sexual, but then I found out half of the writers were young teenage girls who were finding out about sexuality and whatnot (much like myself) and it wasn’t a big deal like I thought it was. It was just apart of growing up and realizing that some people just mature faster than others and there’s nothing wrong with that.

Men in love - I’m gonna be completely honest, I started shipping men back in the 1D fandom when the Larry Proof videos started making appearances (even if they never come out and say anything, those looks they gave each other? They were in love). I,however, did not start writing for men in love until 2019 when I was presented with Reddie (Eddie Kaspbrack and Richie Tozier) from the remake of IT. It started out with me reading the ship until my own ideas formed and after that, I found how much I enjoyed writing for a pair of men so clearly in love with each other. Icemav is my new fav ship to write for this 🤭

Size differences - I LOVE WRITING FOR SIZE DIFFERENCES. When one partner is so clearly smaller than the other and projecting their need for love and attention, while the taller one gives off “I must protect and love this small creature with everything in me”. It fits all of my ships so well and I love writing this dynamic interact.

Mutual pining idiots - when they’re in love or in lust with each other and it’s so clear to everyone around them, but they’re literal dumbasses who can’t tell the other wants to kiss them or pin them against a wall. It never gets old. It’s goes so well with friends to lovers and enemies to lovers. Like, do y’all really hate each other or do you just want to fuck? Bc everyone here can see that you want to jump each others bones except y’all. I will probably forever write this trope.

I've made it my mission to reply to every single comment I get on my work, because the fact that there are people out there who not only read my work, but they also take the time to leave a comment, is such a huge deal to me and it makes me so happy. The least I can do is make sure they all get a reply.

6. Which of your fics has the angstiest ending? Ooof, I guess The Last Straw? The ending itself isn't the angstiest part of the fic, but the entire thing is angsty as hell.

7. Which of your fics has the happiest ending? I'd say most of my fics have happy endings, but the happiest? Probably Devils Roll The Dice (Angels Roll Their Eyes), or the first sequel Like Snow At The Beach (Weird, But Fucking Beautiful).

8. Do you get hate on your fics? Haven't gotten any hate so far on my current AO3 account! I used to get a bit of hate on my fics when I used to write for another fandom (1D, despite not being a 1D fan myself, I only wrote requests from other people) years ago, though, because back then there was apparently a "right or wrong way" to write fics, and there were always people who thought you were doing it wrong.

9. Do you write smut? I do. Admittedly, it's my least favorite thing to write, but I do write it.

10. Do you write crossovers? I've never tried, and I've never had an urge to so far.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? Only one! (That I know of.) It was the first 1D fic I wrote and somebody tried to pass it off as their own. Didn't work very well for them.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated? Not yet, but I was actually contacted by a lovely person who wants to translate some of my F1 fics, which is a huge honor. So it's coming!

13. Have you ever co-written a fic? Yes, I have! I co-wrote a fic with an old friend back in my McFly obsession days, and I've co-written two Lestappen fics with my darling @f1writingbyme.

14. What’s your all-time favourite ship? All-time? I honestly don't know if I can pick because all of my favorite ships have been my all-time favorite ship at the time I was hyperfixating on them. But, if I have to make a choice, I'd say it's a tie between Lestappen and Junes (Harry Judd/Danny Jones from McFly).

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish, but probably never will? Oh, man, I don't have one because my brain will not let me start a WIP without finishing it. Once I start writing something, my OCD and anxiety kicks in, and I just have to finish it. And if I can't finish it, I delete the whole thing and never think of it again. Which is both a blessing and a curse.

16. What are your writing strengths? Angst and endings, I think.

17. What are your writing weaknesses? Smut, without a doubt. Despite having written a fuckton of smut in my life, there is nothing that stresses me out more than when I get to the part in a fic where smut belongs. Reading back my own smut makes me cringe.

18. What are your thoughts on writing in other languages in fics? If it's done properly, I say go for it! I personally don't mind it at all and find it adds depth to a lot of work. Just make sure you use something other than Google Translate if you don't speak the language, and preferably check with someone who speaks the language, to make it as believeable to a native reader as possible.

19. What was the first fandom you ever wrote for? McFly. God, those were the days. I was a literal child back then.

20. What’s your favourite fic that you’ve written? Definitely Devils Roll The Dice (Angels Roll Their Eyes). Writing that fic altered my brain chemistry, and I can still remember how I felt writing the different chapters. And also 19 Times The Grid Saved Lestappen (And One Time They Didn't Need To), because that was just so fun from start to finish.

I read “It's just science Don't let it break you down” seems to be a line from his song on my Twitter timeline that people were appreciating. I know we are never supposed to acknowledge it but the 1D fans just are very basic people aren’t they. That doesn’t even mean anything. It’s like a 12 year old trying to do a Twitter trend trying to fit in the phrase “it’s just science” to something random they are saying.

You don’t have to publish it but when shit like this is getting such positive critic reviews, doesn’t it make you question how entrenched this whole industry is in capitalism. How bad it is for humans in general? Anyway as I said these things are not meant to be acknowledged. So, I just wanted to write to you because thank god for people like you. Now it’s “your face can start a cult” and “it’s just science” (whatever does it mean) and “cocaine sideboob choke her with a sea view”— it’s all so dumb and crass, and yes, BASIC. So 1 year ago in 12 grade I was starting to be friends with a group of people who really loved 1D, tried to understand them as an old 1D fan I was, tried to engage, to ask them about things, if they liked the new album, tried to hear it just cause they asked(I never lied to them and always told them it’s not my type of music anymore)

but, every time I tried to talk about Kpop they were so rude, they laughed, or just stop the conversation so I couldn’t share my opinion. They LITERALLY YELLED AT ME in fucking class cause I said “no, I don’t think BTS is gonna win the Grammy” like girl I tried to give them the reasons but they were like “of course they are gonna win” ”they have it so easy” “they are just gonna give it to them” but they did not say that in a good tone, more like a “they have it rigged” tone

I stopped trying to fit in that group, and just ended the relationship, cause they made me feel awful every time I tried to talk (not just about kpop)

Book Review:”Once Upon a K-Prom” by Kat Cho

Genre: YA fiction

Premise: Best friends separated in childhood, one becomes a K-Pop star and one is an unpopular high school girl.

Review:  This book is the book your mother warned you about. She’s all about appearances (VERY pretty cover art that tricked me into coming back multiple times) and no substance (I couldn’t stomach finishing this book.) Was it an interesting premise? Sure! But the author writes like she does NOT trust the audience. 

You’ve heard of ‘show not tell’? Cho repeatedly shows AND tells AND shows again in the span of one paragraph. She’ll have the author give us great details like “my twin brother got a brand new car for his birthday but they make me use a double-hand-me-down with over 150,000 miles” and then fuck it up by having the character state the obvious “my parents prefer my twin brother.” (except it always gets drawn out to three sentences). Every single emotion these characters have are expressed through their actions, yes, but then they’re ALSO explained to the audience immediately afterwards in great depth. This slows the pace of the book down to a crawl as every character states their every emotion in the most bland voice you’ve ever heard (even 12 year old fanfic writers in all their absurdity can have a more fun voice.)

The love interest, Robbie, especially suffered from this. While the majority of the book is narrated by Elena, Robbie gets to narrate his own (very short) chapters on occasion FOR THE SOLE PURPOSE OF MORE EXPLANATION. Robbie’s chapters are JUST direct explanations of his feelings from his point of view. They’re only meant to prove to the audience “yeah so he messed up but he feels bad so you should still ship them.” He has no character whatsoever - “teen star who rose to fame too young and was forced by his publicity team to have a persona that he struggles against” is INTERESTING. It’s INTERNAL CONFLICT. But we’re shovel-fed his thoughts and this internal conflict is fucking drab. I’d rather read that ‘get adopted by 1D’ fic because at least I could laugh at how bad it is. This is bad but boring.

Not to mention, Robbie doesn’t exist outside of Elena (the MC). His only goal is to take a girl to prom that he hasn’t talked to in a decade. Elena says no. He keeps trying, (but because of his chapters, we know he is Confused and Not Creepy.) I honestly don’t even know if he likes music... or ANYTHING. The only times we see him are when he’s chasing Elena or monologuing. I don’t root for him. I don’t want him to succeed. I honestly don’t know why he’s doing this, his motivations are that weak.  

The puzzle pieces for this book are all there. The set-up is very interesting and Elena is serviceable as a YA MC (in theory). This book fails because the author cannot write.

right so, when i was younger, like 10/11 years old, i started reading a lot of books and to sound more cool and fancy, i wanted to get into english music as well. so back then the only way i could do that was by listening to this one channel on the radio that played english songs between 12 am and 3 am and so i would listen to it everyday and because it's radio, it was basically the same set of songs that played depending upon popularity and stuff and they played a lot of taylor, justin, katy perry etc back then! and i would listen to these songs, transcribe the lyrics and write them down and remember the artist name and stuff and we had like an entertainment section in the newspaper and one page of it would be about foreign media and i would look to see the artists' names and stuff so i know what they looked like 💀 and that's how when i came across what makes you beautiful on the radio and saw their photos and saw that they had a brown person in the band i immediately latched onto it 🤭 and then i slowly became a fan but i wasn't in the fandom back then. however it was only around 2014/15 when i met my best friend that we started talking more about 1d and i got onto twitter and ig fandoms (back then it wasn't as bad as it is now and i did have a tumblr but it was for hp and b99) and it was also around the time of rbb and sbb and so basically the gay bears made me a larrie and also helped me realise i was gay too 💀 so yeah that's my story of getting into the 1d/larry side of things. this got really long 🫣 how did you get into the fandom and what made you a larrie? 👀

Also,can I rant here for a bit in your Asks inbox because I need these out of my chest for the people who seemed to have needs proof every second and the people who seemed to have forgotten hot to look after themselves. So apparently Louis pointed into the Larry sign and every one freaked out? If there are millions of people who believe in Larry for more than a decade and never stopped talking about it, I don’t think you still need some proofs or something. Just get on with it, it’s already real. What more could you want? For them to have to have sex in front of you? Any of them doing larry thingz that are just incredibly loud should not even be surprising anymore just like the millions of times they’ve done it.

Additionally, I am all for signs. But please, just keep it Louis focus because this is his tour. He had been waiting for this for years and he shall recieved our full attention without having to do this and that if larry is real. He knows that half of the people in the venue he is in every night are Larries, the biggest drive why that Louies (and Harry’s) fandom is so welcoming and like a pride parade all the time because Larries believe in two gay men being in a relationship, so antis or whoever the fuck you are, you can go suck your own dicks.

Last thing, it is our responsibility to look after ourselves therefore HYDRATE YOURSELVES AND EAT.Louis is not your mother nor is he your father that he has to look after you all when you are old enough to be in fuckin concerts. It is very disappointing, disrespectful and egotistical on the fans part that he has to stop every show because you didn’t drink. I get that it is excitement crowding all your common senses but if you have to buy a drink, go into the side and have to get yourself together, Do it. It is your responsibility as an individual to look after yourself first and if you can’t anymore, that’s where venue staff are there for.

It is just cringe and weird how every night he has to stop his show because you all are falling like flies in the venue during concerts. Get yourselves together people, this is just madness. It disrupts the flow of the show and it ruins every thing else. There are people who paid a lot for it to have a show that does not constantly being stopped all the time. Also, it’s the staff who has to deal with delays and every thing. So let’s just get it together, yes?

Also can I add how middle fingers should be tamed unless he starts doing it or when doing photos? Because in my family, we do not do that. It is offensive and highly disrespectful. I do not get that and have never considered it as a “love language”, it is more of a “piss off” language. Seriously would never see me doing that to anyone no matter the reason; or is that just a Western culture thing that I don’t get? There are better options, probably send him some blown kisses because like that one video, he was all giggly and shy and blushing. It is much more beautiful.

It was a great show, from what I could catch the show had to be stopped as people again kept passing out, and Louis even left the stage while those fans got water to regroup.

The signs are something we'd never have control over, they existed at all 1D concerts, it's the boys' choice to react, thumb them up, alas encourage them. I'm a bit torn at what to think, on one hand he didn't seem annoyed so why should I - on another hand we're not 12 anymore. I still haven't made up my mind. But I think it would be super entitled of me to complain when he himself the artist it was directed at not only didn't seem annoyed but he thumbed it up.

So yes, we have video of this sign "Sing Walls if Larry is real" which he acknowledged with a smile. The sign was huge, it's without a doubt he could see it and read it just fine. And it was yet again his decision to acknowledge it and point to it with a smile on his face

And god yes, people, EAT and DRINK. Please. I get it there's no AC, I get it they're overcrowded as the venues could be overbooked, but please try to help yourself, Louis is not your target when you feel sick. Security is there to help, others are there too. Louis has enough to worry about at a show: his own health, working the crowd and keeping up the spirits, technical glitches etc. Just try to do the maximum you can before entering the venue.

when you say that boyband’s work on a shelf-life and theyre thought of as a cash crop what do you mean? that they’re only an object to the industry?

i mean, let’s break it down. boybands, more times than not, are curated by someone else. it isn’t exactly the boys that come together, find each other, and then start a career. usually, a higher up will pluck 4-5 boys from the crowd and put them in a group together expecting them to be puppets to their success. from the beginning, a boyband is fundamentally under the thumb of the industry due to their origins. then, of course, you have the image branding. these boys, at a young age, are given labels to be to sell records and garner favorites from the fans— which in turn gives more reason to sell more individual product with a certain boy on them. the boys will go through image training/publicity training, and besides putting on a character depending on their branding (zayn malik literally talked about how he couldn’t even really grow a beard in the band), they’re also walking on eggshells to present to the media in a way that is not only broad enough for most of the GP to favor them, but also to give just enough personality away that most of what one knows about them is either created in a boardroom or acts as surface level for fans to push their own attitudes onto them without compromising this carefully patched together image. this doesn’t mean these boys aren’t genuine in how they perform, but there is a lot of tightening of screws and pushing into molds at a young age that can fuck with them when carried out for long periods of time. it’s like appearing as yourself but mimicking someone else’s idea of who you ought to be. it’s the alien impersonator. it makes me think of NSYNC’s music video where they were all puppets on a string, being controlled by the omniscient puppet master. do i think that visual was pointed in makeup? not necessarily, but it is a good reference point for how i’m sure many boybands feel throughout their lifespan

then, you get into the lucrative amount of $$$ people are making off these groups. the global merchandise. the touring. the albums pumped out every 12 months. the chosen teams that surround the boys to keep them on track and keep them feeding into the machine as long as their contract permits. when the $$ begins raking in, that’s what the label begins to view you as. your expectation revolves around their bank accounts, and the more $$ you generate, the harder it is to have freedom and orchestrate a life outside of the spotlight that isn’t predominantly cast in the form of making more $$ for these companies. and these companies know that the pop-sphere only has a general attention span of 5-6 years before a revolving door of new talent comes in, so they’re even heavier handed with how they pump the content out knowing the shelf-life is waning, and there’s only a specific area of time they can milk them for what they are— using it as a justification for dehumanizing a group to line their own pockets.

and god forbid one of them tries to “mess” with that money. even if the intention isn’t malicious. take for example, Brian Littrell from the Backstreet Boys or Niall Horan. Brian had to get open heart surgery, and they pushed him back into a worldwide tour and promo cycle almost straight after. Niall Horan has had knee surgeries that were prolonged for long enough until they were mandatory and he was on crutches during promo stints. their health and well-being is on the back burner if it compromises their ability to be a cash crop. their agency is stripped to be objects to an industry who looks at them and instantly sees wealth. they walk in a room not as individual people but as a well-oiled machine, which can mess with how you think people view you outside of the group. “would these people speak with me if i wasn’t apart of this?” “would i be able to get into the studio with certain producers/song writers if i was on my own?” “would i have the same opportunities without this goliath presence on my back?” “will i always have that part of my life carried on my back, unable to pick apart if my own talents or my past talents is what’s given me the success i have now?” “is this image the only thing people see and use me for when i walk in a room now?” “what is success if it isn’t the success i had in the band?” a lot of identity issues are created in this isolated bubble, and it’s no wonder why any member of a boyband has insecurities and doubts when they leave that model, not knowing who they are or what they represent.

and finally, you have to take into consideration how tightly controlled their entire life is beyond just promo or images. their schedules are blocked months if not years in advance, not being able to have personal freedom unless it works around things that have already been confirmed for the group (i mean let’s example girl group little mix here. two of them were afraid of becoming pregnant when they did bc their schedules are confirmed ages in advance, and they thought they’d be scolded for it). their agency is gone. their independence is gone. their freedom of just existing is gone. they exist in relation to the label and their “handlers.” they have lives, and they can do things, but many of those things have to be worked through the system and approved. think about how isolating the 1D bubble was. almost none of them had gaggles of famous friends that weren’t also there to sell a certain image of the group. they were contained for most of their youth to just those five boys. from 16+, their teen years and growth into adulthood was centered around this bubble mentality. they were stunted, and you can see the affects of that even now— years later.

so, i don’t blame these groups for taking indefinite breaks or disbanding altogether. that environment is toxic and erasing and superficial. it’s harmful. and i think it’s important to know this. because there’s no foul in loving boybands/girl groups and who they are, what their music sounds like, and what they represent to you. they’re a special type of celebrity that many connect with in different ways than they do individual artists. in ways, who they showed to you was genuine and loving and their friendships within the band cannot be faked. most times, they only have each other through the chaos of fame so they rely on themselves and their fans every night as their support beams so, don’t feel guilty or shameful for liking a band and supporting a band as you weren’t the ones who created this for them— it’s the age-old history of how the boyband model operates and tbh until it “breaks” i unfortunately don’t believe it’ll be fixed.

SONG LEAKS!! “Listening to demos sent for my old band and between them all I think I have a full 2021 1D album,” tweeted singer Tom Jay Williams, a member of the band At Sunset, who were known for their One Thing cover and won Australian Idol in 2015 but didn’t go on to do much. He then posted short clips of Louis singing a song called Help!! You can tell how old it is by the sound of Louis’ voice and of the song, but damn, just because he sounds better now doesn’t mean it doesn’t sound lovely and getting to hear his back-then voice solo is a rare treat, such a sweet soft plaintive sound! Still, Louis was Not Pleased; “I spend a lot of time crafting the right songs and the right sound. The fact this has been leaked is bullshit. It's a shit song now stop giving it attention!” he tweeted. He liked a couple tweets saying yeah he has a right to be angry and ‘he’s mad at the leak not the fans who listen’ and unfollowed someone condemning him for complaining (for real! It’s his songs he has a right to complain if they’re posted without his permission!) But he quickly reverted to his trademark optimism, adding, “got something BIG planned later this year! It's going to be special!!” (HOW BIG trended fans sdlaskj EXCUSE ME) and reassuring louies that he wasn’t mad at THEM- “doesn't need to be such a drama. All good,” he said, on witnessing the explosion of drama that he himself had created, and “hahaha no stress at all.” You say that now… but the leaks continuing probably didn’t make him too happy! Full demos of Help and of Secret Heart (a Louis and Jamie Hartman song registered in 2019, sung by someone unknown here) followed later in the day, from seemingly different sources (?!)- will there be even more?? I do feel bad for him about more current stuff being posted especially, but it’s still exciting to get to hear! But I mean, feel free to drop something yourself if you want to distract us Louis…

Louis didn’t complain publicly about the old pictures of him that were leaked (well, posted) yesterday, but maybe he would have been embarrassed by them too if he knew- it’s a bunch of pictures from a pre-fame ski trip (do you remember winter ‘09…), and there he is, hamming it up just like he did for the whole world the next year in the video diaries and honing the skiing skills he would teach to Harry soon after. In some respects, just like current day though- Louis front and center of his crew, plus Oli right there by his side.

Meanwhile in sports drama a proposed “European Super League”, in which the 12 largest (richest) teams would break away from regular play to form their own league, shutting out the possibility of a smaller team competing to the top, is pissing everyone off- including Louis. He liked a post condemning the plan last night, and while he was online being cranky today anyway (before he remembered himself and turned to reassuring the kids that daddy wasn’t angry at THEM just very disappointed by the bad leakers) added his own take on the matter; “fuck the super league and the greedy fuckers at the top!” Niall also commented on the issue, saying “spot on”  to a post saying ‘created by the poor stolen by the rich’ about the proposed league.

Harry was nominated by the British LGBT awards, in a field of nominees that includes both openly queer and presumed straight celebs, plus Harry and others occupying a less defined position publicly. A graceful solution to the issue of widespread industry closeting, well done; the awards are fan voted and won’t be announced until August. Another official postponement of Louis’ tour went out for some areas; another chance to refund if anyone chooses, but this is no time to give up! Real dates are closer than ever!
