ngl storygraph buddy reads are so fun, the discussion thread within it is such a cool feature (especially marking comments by page/percentage and that it hides them if not at that point yet) and I love seeing the meters where everyone is at in a book too

Interesting 1998 modern, stylized Hacienda style home in Scottsdale, Arizona. 5bds, 6ba, $5.890M + $286mo. HOA fee. (Why do all these homes in deserts, on mountain tops, and the middle of nowhere have HOAs?) Note: Membership to the Desert Mountain Club is not available with this property. Well, excuuuuse me. This home is not good enough for the Desert Mountain Club?
Tumblr media
Now, there's an unusual mantel- I've never seen an accordion style mantle.
Tumblr media
I guess when you use the bar, you push it away from the window?
Tumblr media
Wow, is this home fancy. An arched nook just for the sideboard and a half wall overlooking the living room in the dining room.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The kitchen has direct access to the terrace. Nice exhaust hood, but the thing I like most is the pop of turquoise.
Tumblr media
Cozy family room. Love the ceramic fireplace. What is that wood on the wall? Looks like a built-in cabinet.
Tumblr media
The pool room has a stunning fireplace and a view of the fountain on the patio. Look at the high chairs so your opponents can watch your moves.
Tumblr media
The movie theater has snack tables, but it needs a fancy snack counter.
Tumblr media
Wow, look at the sink in the powder room. This is luxurious. What? No soap holder? How tacky, a bar of soap sitting on the rim.
Tumblr media
Primary bedroom has a great mountain view and lovely fireplace.
Tumblr media
The en-suite is beautiful, but that tub enclosure is too big. I'd have sit on it and swing around.
Tumblr media
The shower has a nice big seat. Good platform for bathing the dog, too.
Tumblr media
The closet has a built-in jewelry case the size of a wall.
Tumblr media
Imagine relaxing on this terrace.
Tumblr media
Cozy, rosy, little den.
Tumblr media
Nice shower with a chaise longue.
Tumblr media
Secondary bedroom has a window seat with a shell-like molding above the window.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The lower level rec room even has a full kitchen.
Tumblr media
Terraced patio has a gorgeous fireplace.
Tumblr media
Yikes, the infinity pool makes it look like you can swim right off the mountain.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The property measures 1.74 acres.

Episode 46 - The Hacienda's Fever (Part 1)
AKA Kerubim Crepin's Divorce Ballad
Tumblr media
Kerubim and Simone besties moment number 84593845345.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This episode is so meta for making Kerubim fucking hate a breakup song and in response singing an even worse one.
Tumblr media
I don't think I need to point out that, very likely, 50-90% of this episode is some shit Kerubim is making up on the fly as he sings to Joris and Simone.
This is less telling of what actually happened at that fucking club, or whether The God Ecaflip Himself was there that night, — and more telling of his divorce issues.
Tumblr media
His dance is too well animated. I can't believe I had to rewind to watch it two times (while withstanding the "singing")
And it has to end with this ass shot each time. I can't do this anymore.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It is tempting for me to assume that this episode takes place after Ecaflip city.
The clues for that interpretation being: The lyrics, her hairstyle, and the fact that he keeps apologizing for some betrayal that we never learn about.
This would point to the fact that, perhaps, she regained her memories, and left him, — and then he had to win her heart back, and they got together again (with this being an idealized depiction of what happened), but eventually, it became too much, and she left him for real.
That would mean that their break-up was a long time coming after Ecaflip city, even if they did try to make things work after she regained her memories, and would line up perfectly with the tenets 1, 4, 5, and 6 of divorce theorising.
She left sad, and unlike many other times, without any anger for Kerubim.
She left Luis with him to watch over him.
She also left Luis because he couldn’t go with her, but that could mean many things.
She left after Ecaflip City, obviously, and at that time, their relationship seemed the healthiest. (Well, as healthy as it could be.)
Unlike all the other times, Kerubim didn’t go searching for her. It seems this separation was final in a way no other was, and there had to be a reason that he didn’t go and try to make up. An unsolvable issue.
Both Luis and Kerubim blame Kerubim, and the first one uses this to make the second one angry.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But thinking about this a bit deeper, — it is just as likely, if not more likely, that Kerubim simply goes into a sad-ass vent song on his post-divorce issues in the middle of that story and never gets back on track for the rest of the episode.
He is singing all of this out loud, after all. There isn't as much of an emphasis on accurate storytelling, when all you're thinking about is singing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The lyrics would... certainly fit that.
Though it could be a combination of both. Perhaps it is after Ecaflip city, — but a lot of lyrics are tinted by his present regrets, with him blaming himself for not saving their relationship somehow.
Perhaps he is envisioning a world where simply singing a Cooler song, all about how sad he is, at Da Club could have fixed everything.
Or maybe I am fucking insane for reading into this.
Tumblr media
His poor homeless orphan ass did NOT go to school or wear glasses. He is making SHIT UP for rhyme's sake. I HATE his ass. Anyway, that book in his hands may say "ERER", or "FRFR", or perhaps "RLRL". It's way too small for me to really tell.
It doesn't seem to be "KEKE", at least.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chances are, Indie, who has known Lou for as long as Kerubim has, is still her friend even after all the romantic tension disappears from between them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And I think if he knew about Kerubim's fucky wucky in the Ecaflip city, he would not feel kindly about it. It would probably completely undo the friendly rivalry and mutual respect they managed to develop over the years.
Tumblr media
Keke is making more shit up, considering this has never happened, but it does tap a little bit into the "he thinks he's entirely to blame, and Lou isn't" thing ("I was so clueless") and "he has self-worth issues" thing ("So afraid they'd like him less").
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yet another clue towards "this episode is a vent for him" theory.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I can't stand him. I can't stand Joris either.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Truly said like a man who developed clinical depression and hoarding tendencies, opened a shop, ruined his shop, and then went to wars for fun after this divorce, before adopting a kid to love him instead.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Men will do anything but go to therapy.

I read books! Sometimes, I remember to talk about books!
Here’s a roundup of some of my favorite things I read in 2023. I'll put half of this under a cut to save the timeline.
Middle Grade:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Life Gives You Mangos by Kereen Getten - This is a sweet story about friendship, grief, and family set in a close knit community in Jamaica following a young girl who can't remember anything that happened the previous summer. I don't read middle grade often so I wasn't expecting to be on the edge of my seat during this book, but I sure was!
Garlic & the Vampire by Bree Paulson - An anthropomorphic village of vegetables - what more could you ask for? When the village learns a vampire moved into a nearby castle, they decide Garlic has to be the one to face him. A cute, wholesome graphic novel - and the sequel Garlic & the Witch was also lovely!
Nonfiction:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A Mind Spread Out on the Ground by Alicia Elliott - This is a collection of essays by an Indegenous author covering a wide range of topics including race, gentrification, parenthood, and mental illness. I annotated the shit out of this book... which is always a sign of a well loved read in my house.
Bad Blood by John Carreyrou - A fascinating account by the journalist from the Wall Street Journal who broke open the case against Theranos and Elizabeth Holmes. The entire story is absolutely bananas and made for a wild read.
Excellent on Audio:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
How to Be Perfect by Michael Shur - If you watched and enjoyed The Good Place, this audiobook should be required listening. Pretty much everyone from the cast pops in at random times to narrate something. It was also just a great, thought-provoking book. I actually read this for a work book club and it prompted me to finally finish The Good Place. Most successful book club pick ever.
Finding Me by Viola Davis - She won a Grammy for the narration of this book (and earning her rightful place as an EGOT) and it was well deserved. I'm not usually one for celebrity memoirs, but Viola's life was incredibly interesting and her narration was amazing.
Thriller/Horror:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Hacienda by Isabel Cañas - This is a Mexican, historical, gothic horror novel set after the Mexican War of Independence. It features a secluded, potentially haunted hacienda and a priest who might actually be a witch. Atmospheric vibes are peak here. Highly recommend listening to the spotify playlist the author made while you read!
No One is Watching by Alyssa Cole - The official blurb says "the gentrification of a Brooklyn neighborhood takes on a sinister new meaning" and that about sums it up. It also compares it to Get Out and that's a pretty good comp, in my opinion.
Poetry:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Artemis Made Me Do It by Trista Mateer - I'm not gonna lie, this poetry collection and the one in the series before it (Aphrodite Made Me Do It) were absolutely cover buys. The cover art is stunning! but luckily the inside is good too.
If My Body Could Speak by Blythe Baird - This collection deals a lot with the feminine experience, how we relate to our bodies and its traumas. Definitely check the trigger warnings for this collection first before picking it up.
Romance:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Take a Hint, Dani Brown by Talia Hibbert - I'm not one to read a ton of romance books but I did enjoy a couple this year. This one was definitely the most explicit but also wholesome and something has to be said for being able to do both. Fun tropes include: fake dating & grumpy/sunshine.
Glitterland by Alexis Hall - While this is still a romance book at its core, it also deals heavily with depression. Fun tip with this book: definitely get the re-released edition with this cover because it has author annotation notes! It was very fun to read those at the end of every chapter.
Short & Quick Reads:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Appendix by Liam Konemann - This is a very small little pocket book, part of the 404's Inklings collection. In it, Liam is reacting to transphobia he encounters through various media, but also discussing how he navigates being a gay trans man in today's culture.
Silver in the Wood by Emily Tesh - I think I would best describe this as a queer forest fairytale. I'm a sucker for any story that can transport me to a mythical forest and while this one clocks in at a little under 115 pages, it packed a good plant magic punch.
Misc Books I Couldn't Find a Category For:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Captive Prince by C.S. Pacat - I never thought I would read this series, but I stumbled into the first one and then devoured the entire series in the span of 2 days. While I know the core of what people love about this is the love story... the political intrigue happening absolutely gripped me!
Oona Out of Order by Margarita Montimore - Another trope/plot device I love is time travel... or whatever weird timey wimey mess you would consider this: Oona faints after she's about to turn nineteen and awakens 32 years in the future in her 51 year old body. She learns that after each year completes, she'll leap to another age at random. It's as messy and complicated as it sounds but never a dull moment.

14, 17, + 24 for the book asks? 📚
end of year books
ty beloved uwu 🖤
14. what books do you want to finish before the year is over?
the hacienda by isabel cañas and kiss her once for me by alison cochrun - the first one is a historical horror set in 1800s mexico that I’m currently reading now and I’m loving it so much already, and the second is a contemporary that sounds ideal for the cozy holiday season, a potential little treat to wrap up the year <:
17. answered here!
24. did you DNF anything? why?
I actually haven’t this year! I did come close with the thursday murder club by richard osman (I think it was a case of the writing style not meshing with the mood I was in at the time) but I’m glad I stuck it out because I did end up liking it tbh

-She is currently in the Art club and Food Ritual club at the Blue Rose Academy
-Candela has a wand shaped like a candle stick that she will attach certain candles to, in order to perform or enhance certain spells

Ooo can u rec a few of ur fav horror books love love love spooky reads :)
🤩oh man here we go let me open the book. a bunch of them under the cut!
Haunted House Classic - The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson Not the first haunted house story by any means, but a lot of modern haunted house stories draw from this one specifically. A wealthy old man invites a group of people to investigate his house to find concrete proof of the supernatural, only for things to go awry as they realize the house is haunted. Gets really mind-trippy towards the end. Modern - The Hacienda by Isabel Cañas Our protagonist marries a rich man to escape a life of poverty and gain some stability in the aftermath of the overthrow of the Mexican government. As she stays at the hacienda, however, it becomes very clear that something is haunting and watching her every move -- as the staff vehemently deny anything happened to the master of the house's first wife, the protagonist turns to an unorthodox priest for help.
Humor
Grady Hendrix is probably the biggest name in horror-comedy right now, and I'm really enjoying his stuff! My favorite so far of his is How to Sell A Haunted House: in the aftermath of her parents' sudden death, a young woman returns home with her burnout brother to try and figure out what to do with her parents' sizable (and possibly haunted) puppet collection. Really tugs at the heartstrings with the plot being utterly off the wall. Also enjoyed Southern Book Club Guide's to Slaying Vampires by him, about a small southern town that realizes they have a vampire in their midst!
Shlocky
I always have to recommend Riley Sager's books because they feel like reading a B-list horror film: they can be silly, they can be a little shallow, they can be full of unnecessary twists, but they're also a lot of fun and feel like they run with a lot of horror tropes. Home Before Dark is his best-known: growing up, the protagonist's parents exploited the so-called spookiness of their family home (very much a la Amityville Horror). As an adult, she returns to her childhood home and realizes it might not all have been fake.
Sci-Fi Horror
The Annihilation series by Jeff VanDerMeer is really good: a group of scientists given only by their title (the biologist, etc) explore this strange new territory filled with secrets and suspicious creatures, only to realize they may have a traitor in their midst. The first of this series is my favorite, and the dream-like narration might not be for everyone, but the imagery is stunning (and if you do read and like it, audio drama Syntax is heavily inspired by it!)
The Last Astronaut by David Wellington: My god, an asteroid is about to hit Earth (very, very slowly!). To investigate what it's about and how to stop it, a former astronaut and their team go to explore it... only to realize there's more secrets than they realize lying inside, and that it may not be an asteroid after all. Really spooky, ending made me emotional.
Fake Oral Histories (Oral Histories are some of my favorite subgenres of books in general! Basically like World War Z - not written in explicit prose format, but taking advantage of other ways of displaying the story - newspaper articles, interview transcripts, court hearings, etc!)
Devolution: A Firsthand Account of the Rainier Sasquatch Massacre by Max Brooks - Speaking of, the guy who wrote World War Z! A town is found massacred, seemingly by the mythic Bigfoot. Journals and various other articles are found around town that explain the weeks leading up to the final slaughter. Really tense, had a lot of fun.
A History of Fear by Luke Dumas - Grayson Hale, AKA the Devil's Advocate Killer, was sentenced for the murder of his fellow graduate student. His account of what happened is found in his jail cell following his death, where he describes how he was approached by a man who he believes to be the actual devil. The framing device for the book is an editor trying to explore more about the Hale case, and it is really fun seeing the editor's version of the story (interviewing people in the Hale statement, seeing conflicting newspaper articles, etc) and how it compares with Hale's. I do have to give a massive religious trauma/homophobia CW on this one though.
Fantasticland by Mike Bockoven - I have commitment issues about calling any singular book my favorite, but Fantasticland holds a special place in my heart. In short: a series of interviews from a bunch of Disneyland-esque theme park workers, mostly teenagers, about an incident in the park. A hurricane forced everyone to evacuate but the employees, who hid in underground bunkers. Soon they emerge to see the damage, but in the several weeks it takes for the flooding to clear, all social order breaks down and gangs start to form: the Pirates, the ShopGirls, the Freaks, the Mole People, all based on different areas of the park. I just think it's really cleverly done and a lot of fun (and also, you know, a little horrifying).
