Harry Potter characters that I like

In response to a Romione fan who thought I hated every HP character and hated everything about the series because I don't stan certain characters and ships, I want to mention here the few characters I like.

For me, I like a character usually if:

they have an interesting personality and background

I feel sorry for how they are generally misunderstood or bashed by fandom (sometimes I take great pleasure in being a contrarian haha) or treated by the author.

their wins feel earned in the narrative and I feel inspired

So here is my list!

Draco Malfoy + Malfoy family

I love Draco so much. I admit that I was drawn in mostly through fanon but as I explored the books more, I really enjoyed his book character a lot. He has a vibrant and entertaining personality and I like how meta he can be sometimes. Every time he proclaims how bad Hagrid is as a teacher or how Hogwarts sucks as a school, I just want to hug him so badly. I also like his parents and their interactions as a family later in the books. Narcissa is my fav mom, no contest. I just think that JKR wasted his potential. Draco is the most developed Slytherin kid and his character should have represented hope for a better future. But of course, JKR only cares about her lions (and Snape who she tried to retcon as a lion too lol) so screw Slytherins. And the NPC houses.

Black family

Gosh, I absolutely ADORE the Black family. The Black family is the most intriguing set of characters JKR ever wrote in HP. The Black family lore, the constellation theme, the dark history, the tragedy. Chef's kiss! Screw making a marauders' prequel!!! Give me a Black Family series! You shouldn't be surprised that Sirius Black is my favourite marauder. Compared to Sirius, James Potter is an utter bore.

Neville Longbottom

I often wish Neville was the chosen one instead of Harry. I think Neville's story is more tragic than Harry's. It must be torture to have your parents alive but practically dead. And Neville just feels more heroic to me. A lot of times, I hate Harry's hero's journey because JKR keeps letting Harry win due to deu ex Machina. It was nice seeing Neville gradually grow into the man he was at the end. And Neville's rage at Bellatrix just felt more visceral compared to Harry's with Moldy Voldy. I just like Neville, he's so sweet and he deserves better friends.

Percy Weasley

On the surface, I don't care much about Percy but I do feel sorry for him. Ron and the twins treated him like trash. His family just had a hate boner for him. Poor Percy. I can vibe with a family black sheep character. I don't like how people paint him as the bad guy for walking out on his family. And I appreciate how distinguished he is as a Weasley. He is the only Weasley member not to bow down and kiss Dumbles' backside like a brainless puppet. It's a shame it backfired on him but I admire his logic.

Luna Lovegood

To be honest, Luna was a nothing character to me until I began reading Druna fanfiction and I realized how adorable her character is in the books. She makes me smile and I like how she used to talk back to the trio in the beginning. So funny when Luna told Harry that people thought Hagrid was a bad teacher lol! I think Luna is the only HP girl I like...also maybe because I really like picturing her with Draco. No shame!

Severus Snape

What a beautiful and tragic character. Like Draco, Snape is such a pleasure to read. The man is pure entertainment in written form. I don't love Snape the way I do Draco, but I like picturing him with a better life. 'Snape drops out of Hogwarts' is one of my favourite AO3 tags. I love how he dedicated his life to good even though life was cruel to him and gave him a bad hand. Everything about Snape is so intriguing and I like learning more about him. Definitely one of JKR's best characters.

Ron Weasley

I hate the golden trio but I find Ron the most tolerable and the most interesting. It's a shame I found myself disliking the guy in the epilogue. People complain about the movies ruining Ron but JKR was ruining Ron in the books too. Ron started out as so intelligent but gradually JKR made him slobbier and dumber. I like how Ron was the common sense guy. Once again, Ron had to be the one to tell Harry what a complete trash disaster Hagrid was. Lord, I hate that man! Shame Hagrid's spiders didn't kill him!!! I wish JKR expanded on Ron's chess ability. Ron showed promise as being a leader of the trio (Lord knows Harry was a disaster) and Ron being strategic would fit with his chess skills...but JKR never followed through. My fellow HP critic, chicory, mentioned this passage:

‘Hmm,’ said a small voice in his ear. ‘Difficult. Very difficult. Plenty of courage, I see. Not a bad mind, either. There’s talent, oh my goodness, yes – and a nice thirst to prove yourself, now that’s interesting … So where shall I put you?’

applies more to Ron than Harry and I have to agree with her.

There are also several instances of Ron just being a sweet friend to Harry and Hermione and I wish he had better friends. I don't care what Romione/Hermione fans say. Hermione does not deserve a guy like Ron. Never did and never will. I don't even think Harry deserves Ron either. Ron does so much more for Harry than Harry ever did for him. I would have preferred if the Luna friendship was developed more for Ron. Ron has his infuriating moments but his great moments offset them. Out of the trio, I think Ron is the best character and sometimes I wish he was the protag instead of Harry.

Well, let me end it at 7, the perfect number! I can't fully word why I like or love some of these characters but this is a gist.

Of course, there may be other characters that I enjoy for what they are in the story (the Death Eaters, Dumbledore etc) but I don't care about them enough to mention them. Blessings!

unpopular opinion: reading the books doesn't matter for jegulus because they're practically OCs. they are fanon drarry except reg is less problematic than draco because he got a small redemption arc and people can project whatever they want on him and make up his personality.

Strongly disagree to every single aspect.

First of all, James Potter is not an OC. He definitely has a canon characterization, both on his own and through the eyes of Remus and Sirius. Regulus doesn’t have a canon characterization per se but has canon characteristics. You also cannot write them without Sirius, who has a strong canon characterization. If you want to make up personalities, write OCs or small characters that don’t actually have any characterization (e.g., Evan Rosier, Dorcas Meadows).

Second, Jegulus and Drarry are not similar and saying that they are is a sign of why an understanding of canon is needed. I’m not even going to touch the problematic comment (LMAO) but not every enemies to lovers ship is the same? In this line of thinking Dramione is also the same? Drinny? Dron? Lucius/Hermione???

A relationship between James and Regulus is fundamentally shaped by Sirius. Best friends brother is a defining characteristic for them. The fact that James is how Sirius got out if crucial. They’re also more or less in a similar position as two rich, priviledged purebloods. James chooses to fight for whats right, Regulus conforms until the very end. In which he deflects because Kreacher is hurt. But he has that spark, look at the wording of his letter, so putting him with James is compelling because he can fan his flames.

Harry and Draco don’t have someone as formative as Sirius to their dynamic. They are the “different side of the same coin”, both of them are child soldiers indoctrinated and martyred to a cause they’re not wholly informed on. Their dynamic is built on the resentment of Draco’s broken fantasy of a friendship Harry rejects. They’re obsessed with each other, they can never ignore each other. They actively hate each other. They’re the person that draws the most emotion from the other to such a point that sectumsempra happens. But they also cannot let the other go. They are defined by their exchanges of lifedebts. Draco not identifying Harry at the manor, Harry rescuing him from the Fiendfyre, Narcissa saving Harry to get to Draco…

These are vital to their dynamic and none of these apply to James and Regulus. You don’t even know if there was hate between them. Sirius himself spoke of Regulus with disappointment, not hate.

So yeah, if you want to interact with these characters you need the nuance of canon. You can write them differently but you still need to be informed on who they are. They are not OCs and acting like they have no canon characterization is resulting in hollow, cardboard cut copy characters that neither fit together nor in the narrative.

Summary: Winter break is approaching and with the prospect of being away from you, Harry’s emotions go crazy causing him to make some decisions that he will later regret.

“Y/n Narcissa Malfoy! You better have a great ass explanation on why and how Granger just came and told me that Potter claims that you have the tightest pussy in the world!” You could see him visibly gag at the last part. You turned around on your chair, abandoning your potions homework. Theo watched the interaction curiously from behind you as he tilted his head to the side in agreement to Draco’s statement.

“First of all, spitting his name won’t make him hate you more. He can’t, he’s not in the room. Second of all, don’t ever talk about my pussy again. Lastly, what the fuck?” You said. Theo started sipping on his peppermint tea as he listened attentively.

Draco marched towards you and said, “Yeah, Granger told me that while Potter was celebrating his win, he got drunk. Apparently drunk Potter is very affectionate about you. He got all mushy. I do not want him to be all mushy about my sister!”

He screamed that last part while slamming his hand on the desk. He was fine with it until it actually happened. The desk shook and Theo’s tea fell. He became sad because he found for the first time the right tea to honey ratio. It was the best tea he’s ever made.

Draco was mad, furious. He thought that once Potter put your father in prison therefore forcing him to take the mark, your feelings would end. You didn’t know this, no one did; but Draco had a conversation with the Dark Lord after he got the mark. He told him about his task and what would happen if the task wasn’t completed. You’d die and so would your mother. He was told not to tell, not that he would’ve anyway. The entire school knowing, once again about you and Potter would complicate the situation greatly.

“Draco, I care about you more than anyone; but I-” You hesitated and you sucked in a breath before you said, “I love him a lot, and I think that I should at least do something for me in my life at least once. If the roles were switched and it was you and Astoria, wouldn’t you have done the same. We’re careful, I promise we are.”

Theo was enjoying the show even without the tea. He knew about your feelings and excursions. It was fun to watch Draco react to it all. Draco nodded along with your explanation, and he let out a huff. He folded his arms and rolled his eyes. “Don’t let anyone see you.”

You had a smile on your face and you hugged him while you chanted “Thank you thank you thank you!” He wrapped his arms around you and he said “I’m serious.” You pulled away and you smiled at him again. You returned back to your chair and you started dipping your quill in ink. “Use protection.”

Theo choked on air as you groaned at Draco’s statement. “Stop. Stop.”

He shook your head and he said “I’m not kidding.”

“Ugghhh. Why do you do this to me? You never said anything with Theo.” You said and Theo’s eyes flickered to Draco and he pushed his chair from the desk. He lifted his hands into the air and he started to stand up. He didn’t want to be pulled into this.

“Yeah because having a baby Nott wouldn’t be bad. You were already almost engaged, but having a baby Potter-” You cut him off by screaming and waving your hands around frantically. “Stop. Stop. Stop.” You shouted as he gave you the talk that you thought you had escaped from. Theo was dying of embarrassment and laughter in the background.

You sighed as you watched the sunrise. “It’s beautiful.” You whispered as you tighten your grip around Harry. He squeezed your hips in reassurance and he kissed the crown of your head. “Not nearly as beautiful as you,” he replied.

You blushed and you could feel the twitch of his lips from your hair. You could handle flirting, especially if it’s sexual but you could not take a single honest, kind compliment. He leaned down and nuzzled his head into the crook of your neck. His voice was already soft but it was muffled by your skin when he said, “I’m sorry about what happened with Hermione and Ron.”

He had the weight of the incident on his shoulders since it happened. He had a stern talk from Hermione and he replied telling her it was simply none of her business. Also, that instead of trying to ruin your relationship they should’ve been happy for him. He knew they were worried, not as much as last year with Voldemort plaguing his mind but worried. They were a bit relieved that he had the capabilities of loving something other than a book.

He pulled you over his body and you noticed for the first time how wet the grass was. Your body was flat on top of his. His hands played with the hem of your shirt while you played with his hair. “Don’t worry about it, just try not to tell the entire castle about my pussy next time, or you might not be able to keep me then.” You winked at the end and he felt his cheeks heat up.

You brushed your hand over his cheek. It was the last day before winter break and you both stayed up in each other’s company. If he couldn’t have spent summer without you, now his heart burns with the idea of not seeing you for a long time. He had no idea what he was going to feel that summer. Your hand trailed towards his chin and you tilted it upwards towards your own lips. It was an innocent kiss, you both had enough sex that day to last all of the break. He disconnected your lips and he said, “I found a new spell.”

You rolled off of him and you heard him chuckle. You leaned against the tree as you sat up right and Harry copied your position. Your shoulders were touching and he held your hand. You fiddled with the ring on his finger. It was silver and if you looked inside it you would find your initials carved inside of it. He wanted to get you the same thing, but he knew people would inquire about it, so you decided it was for the best. It was a constant reminder that he was yours and you reminded him every second that you were his

He grabbed the book that was almost covered in snow from the tree above you both. You knew you had snow all over you and you saw Harry’s face covered in it. You enjoyed wiping away the snowflakes that landed on his eyelashes. The black lake was frozen in front of you both. Last night, at almost the exact same time as now, You both ice skated on it. Harry kept falling until his clothes were wet and because you kept laughing at him, he decided that he was in desperate need of a hug.

He opened the book on a page he had the side of doggy eared. You cringed at the page, but you didn’t care as much. The book was already old with scribbles and torn edges. He tapped the word sectumsempra. You furrowed your eyebrows and you said, “Don’t know it. What does it do?”

“Dunno.” He replied and he leaned his head on your shoulder. He wrapped his arms around your waist and he nuzzled into you like a bear. You laughed at him, but you couldn’t say that you didn’t feel the butterflies in your stomach. You told him he could check in the library, he told you he was too lazy. You chuckled and ran your hands through his hair. “I love you.” He whispered.

“You say that at very odd times.” You said as your fingers trailed down to the nape of his neck and you started playing with the short strands, occasionally accidentally tugging on them. He pulled your leg closer to him, he never felt like you were close enough to him. That’s how you so much time having sex, it seemed like every part of his skin needed to be on yours for him to feel safe and loved. He needed reassurance that you were there and you wouldn’t leave him. “I say it when I feel it.”

You hooked your leg around his thighs and you continued to play with his hair. You told him you loved him. He said who wouldn’t. You slapped his head. He sat in a few moments of comfortable silence. His head was on his chest and he could feel your heartbeat. He also loved your tits. He ran his hand up and down your back. The smell of his shampoo comforted you and he knew that. He made sure not to use any other shampoo.

He wanted to spend the rest of his life with you, but Hermione and Sirius had told him before how Purebloods loved arranging marriages. So he asked, praying that the answer would please him, “You don’t have an arranged marriage or anything like that, right?”

He heard you take a deep breath, and as the seconds passed without an answer, he started to become more sure that he wouldn’t like the answer. “Theo.” You replied and he didn’t need any more explanation. He pulled you closer to him, he couldn’t lose you. He couldn’t watch you marry someone else. He’ll never get over you. You’re perfect for him and even if you weren’t he doesn’t want anyone else. He needs you. “Can you break it off or something like that? Maybe have the other Malfoy marry him.”

You chuckled at his suggestion. He put it in to lighten the mood, he was breaking inside and you knew that. “I don’t think I can, and if I did, they wouldn’t let me be with the boy who lived.” he tried to exhale but his breath hitched and was uneven. He reached to scratch his scar. Something you noticed he did often. Often when something bad happened because of it or when he didn’t like what having it caused him. The place where it was more than not, red from his itching. You pulled his hand away and you pressed a kiss to where it was, “Hey, it’s not because of your stupid scar, it’s because of my parents. Don’t scratch like that. You get hurt enough as it is.” You said sternly.

He nodded his head but you knew that he didn’t believe it. He felt his eyes sting and he felt pathetic. He was glad to have his head buried in your chest because he wouldn’t want you to see him cry. He kept blinking his eyes to push the tears that wanted to flow out of his eyes. He took in a deep breath and he started to think of something, anything to fix this. “Run away with me.”

“What?” You asked, you weren’t sure if you heard him right.

“Run away with me.” He repeated. He looked into your eyes and they had so much hope in them.

“What?!” You repeated, this time out of shock.

“Run away with me. Not now of course. After we finish school, we’ll graduate and we’ll already have our trunks packed and we’ll leave to wherever we want. We both have enough money to last us fifty life times. Let’s do it. We’ll be together, away from everyone else. We’ll go anywhere you want, I don’t care where the hell I am, If I’m with you. You could pick a volcano and I wouldn’t say no.” He rambled and he grasped both your hands tightly into his.

“Harry, we can’t do that. We can’t just leave everyone and everything.” You tried to reason with him. He couldn’t just make life changing decisions out on a wim like this. He shook his head furiously, and he said, “No we can. We can. There isn’t anything to leave. After Hogwarts, we’ll have nothing. You even told me that you hate the manor, so screw it all. You can send letters.”

“I’m not going to leave my brother.” You said. Of course damn the stupid manor. You didn’t care about that piece of junk. You cared about your brother and about Theo. Your mother wasn’t always the most caring person, but you couldn’t leave her. “And what about you? You have the Weasleys, are you just going to leave them too?”

“I’ll send letters, you’ll send letters. Isn’t that enough?” Harry was pleading as you started to pull away from him. His eyes started to sting. He can’t lose you. He already lost so much. He can’t lose you too. You stood up and you said “No it isn’t. I don’t want to leave my brother or my mother or Theo.”

The tears in his eyes were lost. He stood up, his lips in a thin line. He saw red. He folded his arms and he looked at you for the first time like he did almost a year ago, with so much hate. You felt your heart beat up to your throat. “So that’s what this is about.” He chuckled humorlessly. He raised his voice to a higher octave and he said in an annoying voice, “Theo.” He rolled his eyes and you started to furrow your eyebrows. “You don’t want to leave Theo. You love Theo. You don’t even want me, you just want Theo. You’re a pathetic liar. Saying that you love me. Being forced to Marry Theo is better than being with a person you love.” Every time he said Theo’s name he mocked it. He raised his hands into air quotes when he said ‘love’.

Your mouth was wide open at his accusations. Your expression was filled with hurt and confusion. You were about to tell him that all he said was wrong and that you love him so much and you want to be with him more than anything. You wanted to reassure him that you only saw Theo as a friend, nothing more. You have already done this, Harry’s insecurities got the best of him at times. He didn’t mean this, you thought; he’s just angry right now.

“You know what, I never even loved you. All of this-” He waved his hands around frantically and his finger pointed between the two of you. “It’s just a joke. I never wanted to even do this.” You felt tears prick your eyes and your heart began to break. “Dumbledore told me to. Go distract y/n Malfoy, and try to get information out of her. If her father is a death eater then she must know something about Voldemort. That’s what he said to me.”

Crack.

“And I did. Nothing I did with you was real. It’s all just fake!”

Crack.

“Did you honestly think that I would love you? You’re pathetic!”

Crack.

Tears were streaming freely across your cheeks and down your neck. You pressed a hand to your mouth to try to contain the sob that wants to be heard. You bit your lip as your hands went around your body to wrap yourself in a hug. You wiped away your tears with your sleeve. You can’t believe that you were crying in front of somebody. “Well then, I guess I was right not agreeing to run away with you after all.”

You started running back towards the castle. Harry took deep breaths to control his anger. He watched as your body became smaller and smaller, more out of sight; and his eyes trailed after your footstep from the snow. He swallowed thickly as he remembered all the events from the past minutes and he realizes how much he fucked up. “Shit.” He whispers as he runs a hand through his hair. “Y/n! Come back please! I’m sorry! Y/n!” He shouted as he started to run after you.

You heard him but you couldn’t look at him. He made you feel like you were soaring this past term and then in less than a minute, he broke your heart. You didn’t know what you did to deserve this pain but a part of you wishes that it knew better. You bullied him along with your brother since first year, nothing you do can erase or turn back time. You heard his footsteps after you and how he was shouting your name. You hid behind a wall until you could no longer hear his shouts. You hadn’t slept in more than 24 hours and before that you didn’t sleep much either, you were exhausted. You walked back to the common room with tears in your eyes.

You pumped into someone and that person put both hands on your arms. You couldn’t see who it was from your blurry vision. They pulled you closer to their chest. It was Draco, you recognized him from his distinctive smell of mint. He kept smoothing your hair as he kept muttering “shh shh, it’s okay. It’s okay, I’m here. Alright?” You wanted to pull away and tell him nothing happened, putting up that stone cold façade you had; but you were tired and hurt. You didn’t pull away. You cried your heart out as he whispered calming words into your ear. You would never leave him.

Potter was nowhere to be seen and because of that… Gryffindor had been completely DESTROYED By Ravenclaw… and… putting up the points they both gathered…

You were cheering as the Slytherin Quidditch team raised the Quidditch cup in their hands.

Everyone else looked gloomy, maybe because the team had won with this one eight times in a row! it was great! 

You wondered where Potter went

For Draco, it was one of his best birthdays ever! You sang to him happy birthday in the great hall when dessert was being served, and you used a cupcake as a birthday cake. His mother sent him a big one with his owl, and you sang to him again at night in the common room. He didn’t get many gifts, but the promise to celebrate when he was home when the holidays started! You gifted him a picture of the two of you in your Slytherin uniforms. 

It was great!

But the next day, in the great hall… everyone was talking about where Potter was.

Apparently the forbidden corridor in the third floor hid a magical artifact, some sort of rock that could give the one that squished it? you didn’t know the details but it was important, apparently professor Quirrel tried to steal it, and of course Potter stopped him, AND… he was some sort of hero… apparently

“And professor Quirrell is dead!”, told Blaise, who managed to always know everything about everyone

“He’s dead?!”, asked Mattheo, surprised, then he sighed in relief, “oh, I owed him like three assignments”, he giggled, and you were horrified

He seemed so nice! And he was around stealing rocks? who knew! so Potter, after fighting him, was in the infirmary, that is why he missed the game, and that is why Ravenclaw “flattened” Gryffindor

But this gave you a sense of worry, next year Harry was going to play too, hopefully you too, so you needed to be better and not count on Potter not being there, you needed to win every game!

You had a new sense of determination.

The last mail entered the hall in that minute, Umbra threw you a envelope with your aunt’s seal in it, and you knew exactly what it was, alongside a small package

There were sweets, taking a page of Narcissa’s book you thought

The letter stated what you already sort of new, congratulations on the passing of exams and winning the Quidditch cup, and also, mentioning your coming trip to France to see your family, you were happy. 

Not Draco though, he seemed appalled, he wanted to practice Quidditch all summer

“I’ll be back by the first week in August”, you assured him, while Matthew stole your treats and ate them himself. Everytime you interacted with him, you felt like you wanted to cry, but you didn't want to fight him.

“Well… I’ll bully my parents into going and visit you, your family’s chateau is still in the Loire Valley, right?”

“Last time I checked”, you mocked, and he smiled back, “The gift I got in Christmas came with season tickets, I’ll be attending a few matches for the Quiberons”, you said with a wide exciting smile, “So I can get inspired”, you said proudly

“My dad got us tickets for the Tornadoes”, muttered Draco

“I love Quidditch season”, muttered Blaise

“As soon as I come back, let’s get together and practice”, you said firmly

“Yes”

“What are you going to do this summer?”, it was the question that lingered all over the last week. Everyone had different plans for the three months

You were so happy, winning the Quidditch cup, the House cup, having passed all your exams, looking forward to a summer with your family and then your friends.

It was too good to be true 

“After an entire year, finally!”, you said, as you walked into the Great Hall and saw the entire room decorated in Slytherin colors. It was the last feast, you were even wearing your pointy ceremonial hats! which you didn't love

You took your seats near the end of the hall, close to the main table where the teachers were seated.

When Potter entered the room, everyone got quiet just to look at him, some even stood up to see up close, as if he was some sort of freak. You didn’t know the details of what happened in the chamber, but it had the entire school rattled.

Professor Dumbledore stood up, catching the attention of everyone.

Draco didn’t like him, but to you he seemed… like sometimes he gets lost in what he is saying, he always spoke so cryptically, you wondered if he was very clever… or if he was just really old.

"Another year gone!" Dumbledore said cheerfully. "And I must trouble you with an old man's wheezing waffle before we sink our teeth into our delicious feast. What a year it has been! Hopefully your heads are all a little fuller than they were... you have the whole summer ahead to get them nice and empty before next year starts....”, fair example, was he calling you all dumb or something?. 

"Now, as I understand it, the house cup here needs awarding, and the points stand thus: In fourth place, Gryffindor, with three hundred and twelve points; in third, Hufflepuff, with three hundred and fifty-two; Ravenclaw has four hundred and twenty-six and Slytherin, four hundred and seventy- two."

Oh how you cheered! you had put in yourself like ten points even after that time you got caught and punished. Draco banged his goblet on the table, you could see the Bloody Baron mocking Half-decapitated Nick.

You personally did not like the bloody Baron, but he was your house’s ghost so… there was nothing to pick.

"Yes, Yes, well done, Slytherin," said Dumbledore. "However, recent events must be taken into account.", oh the cheering stopped really suddenly

Was he going to tell the entire school Draco and you lost the school points? perhaps they didn’t discount them yet… What if? that you had committed something so outrageous that he was going to publicly humiliate you… only to make you an example?

No way, Potter and his friends had been caught too, right?

"Ahem," said Dumbledore. "I have a few last-minute points to dish out. Let me see. Yes…”, you let out a breath you didn’t know you were holding. "First… to Mr. Ronald Weasley..."

You and Draco changed looks

"...for the best-played game of chess Hogwarts has seen in many years, I award Gryffindor house fifty points". Now it was the Gryffindors’ time to cheer, rattling the table,  "Second… to Miss Hermione Granger... for the use of cool logic in the face of fire, I award Gryffindor house fifty points.", what did that even mean? you couldn’t understand it, "Third… to Mr. Harry Potter..." said Dumbledore, “for pure nerve and outstanding courage, I award Gryffindor house sixty points."

You tried to count, you didn’t even know… but… 

The Gryffindors were being so loud it was hard to think… were they tied with you now?. Dumbledore raised his hand, the room went quiet suddenly

"There are all kinds of courage," said Dumbledore, smiling. 

“No…”, you whined

"It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends. I therefore award ten points to Mr. Neville Longbottom."

You had to cover your ears after the Gryffindors exploded 

"Which means we need a little change of decoration.", he clapped his hands and the entire room went from being beautifully Green and Silver… to boring Red and Gold

The serpent vanished to be changed by the Lion, and you didn’t even understand what was going on! why? What happened? Was that even fair? they broke thousands of school rules, they went to that prohibited place… and you were so frustrated you growled. 

Well, at least you had the Quidditch cup! even though you didn’t cooperate for that one… or that much…

You were starting to fear that… instead of taking the Hogwarts express you had taken the Potter express… and because he was in your same year… they were not going to let you come down from it.

The rest of the feast, once your sadness dissipated, was nice, again, it had all your favorites, but it was a magical school, you didn’t think it odd.

You looked around your table, where your Slytherin class was, and you couldn’t help but feel a bit sad… you were not going to see them in the next three months, and honestly, you were going to feel and be a bit lonely, in your house, with your aunt alone… anyways…

“Don’t be sad Basilik”, Flint was passing by, “next year… other cup to win, and you will be there to help us win the Quidditch cup again, are you?”, you nodded enthusiastically, “that’s the spirit”, and he kept walking, you looked further down the table and Terrence Higgs raised his goblet to you and you felt so nervous all of a sudden

He was the team’s seeker, but your best friend also wanted to be the team’s seeker and there couldn't be two seekers… oh

Well… let the best seeker win, right?

So you tried to push those thoughts from your mind as you kept enjoying the feast

Next year is going to be even better, right?

Right!?

Soon you were packing your trunk, you had to go and pick up Umbra from the Owlery, 

The girls were all hyped putting away their own things

“Are we going to have the same rooms next year?”, asked Millicent

“I hope so”, you said lightly, Tracy Davies, who you had barely seen the entire school year, just twisted her mouth, she was more friends with… she was a lone wolf sort of gal.

You had been an only child, you had a family on your mother’s side, far off, but still, but you didn’t have cousins your age, so… you felt very sad to leave Hogwarts and your friends

“I will write to you every week”, promised Draco, “and once Father installs the international floo in our home, i will go and visit you too”

“I don’t think it works that way Dray”, you giggled, as you sat by his side on the train, “but it could be fun”

“Right?” he asked, “Matthew is spending a couple of weeks in my place”

“Why?”, you couldn’t help but ask, you both had been the first ones on the train

“I don’t know”, he answered truthfully, “his family is kinda weird, you know?”

“How so?”, he looked around worried before he leaned in and whispered

“They are purebloods, but because they… keep it in the family”

“What do you mean?”, you asked back, he looked extremely uncomfortable

“They marry between cousins and such”, you didn't find it very weird… many pureblooded families did, “but no second or third cousins”, he corrected, “cousins cousins”

“Oh”, that was weird

“They are this very ancient pure-blooded family, but a couple of generations back, they lost all their family money”, how did he know all this stuff? probably uncle Lucius, “now they are a bit…well…”, he couldn’t keep talking, Matthew himself sat in front of the both of you

“What are you both talking about?”, he asked, he had this bitter look on his face

“Summer, Draco promised he was going to write me all summer”, you changed the subject

“My eagle-owl is just going to have to… cross the ocean”, he said confidently 

“Well, technically it's a channel? I think”, you mumbled nervously

“Umbra can surely make the journey, right?”, he asked, you weren’t sure

“Sure”, Matthew had this gloomy look on his face

“Well, me, for one, I do not look forwards to this summer”, he mumbled, maybe he felt like you, maybe in Hogwarts he had more people around than at his home

“Relax, we are going to hang around in the manor”, said Draco, “and with Crabbe and Goyle”

“That sounds nice”, you offered, “and I’ll be back in August”, you said with a wide smile. 

As the boys talked, you dedicated yourself to look outside the window, Hogwarts disappearing in the distance. It was a magnificent castle, surrounded by breathtaking views, and looking back at the year, it had been a great year… and… looking forwards to the next one… you were certain it was going to be even better

I’ve never understood Wolfstar, Jegulus, or Drarry. Yes, Sirius and Remus were friends but they went that close. If they were would Sirius have believed Remus was a spy? Did this conversation not come up as he was gazing into his eyes or shagging his brains out? Would Remus not have tried to bail or see Sirius in jail? None of it adds up. Jegulus doesn’t make sense either. There’s no interaction between James or Regulus, if James was going to choose a Black it would be Sirius not Regulus. This is the Wolfstar gang wanting to pair James with someone else because they believe Sirius belongs to Remus. Plus, James would never date a death eater. Then there’s Drarry, and I don’t get this pairing at all. They have nothing in common other than being Seekers at quidditch which we don’t even know if that was Draco’s position or if he was placed into that because it was all that was available on the Slytherin team. Harry hates everything about Draco, his morals, his friends, his attitude, and his family, his existence, and his face. Would Harry have really cared if Draco died in the fire? Probably not. He would have felt bad for a few seconds because he’s a cabbage and maybe when Narcissa asked if Draco was alive he would have been thinking fuck I should have tried harder to save the lil bitch (although I can guarantee Harry would have lied to Narcissa about Draco because he needed to get rid of Voldemort). Rorry makes way more sense than Drarry. And don’t even get me started on Drinny. Ginny would have never let that ferret touch her and if she was forced to marry him, you best believe my girl found a way to murder the whole Malfoy family in one night. What all of these pairings have in common is Remus, Regulus, and Draco are completely off character and writer makes them the Casanova of Hogwarts. There’s nothing in the books about Remus being good looking, Regulus is decent looking but not as attractive as Sirius, and there is not even one line of Harry thinking Draco is a good looking guy. The Drarry shippers have made me hate the pairing so much that I can’t even ship Scorbus lol. I hate that kid and want him to die for just being a Malfoy 🤣. I know it’s not fair but you can thank the Drarry shippers for my hatred of Scorbus and pushing their agenda.

I agree with you on all fronts (except for Scorbus because I loooove me some Scorbus and it’s the only thing making me keep Draco alive!)

Wolfstar is like the friends to lovers trope. But I don’t think they were that close either. They thought each other were the spy!! It just doesn’t make sense. I’d love to hear how Wolfstar writers write this. Like do they just forgo canon like they do these characters personalities?? You could maybe sell me on post-Azkaban Wolfstar but they need to be in character and you need to make it make sense, you know?? Even then, I’m suspect. You’d have to do a lot of convincing for me to try it.

James dating a Death Eater?? No, makes zero sense whatsoever. James hated the dark arts. He hated Death Eaters. He would never have dated Regulus. Ever. From what I understood, the characterizations of them are bad in order to make them work.

Now, if you wanted a good friends to lovers couple, I would recommend a nice Prongsfoot or Rarry, like you said. If you want the little cabbage to be born (which I know I do), I love me a well done Jilypad. That throuple just makes sense on so many levels. I’d love to read a long fic with this couple, but I’ve only found short one shots. And, in my mind, Hinny is together in every universe… except the one where Rarry is together. End of story. Sorry, there is one universe where Hinny is not together.

As for Drarry, I view it as like a Dramione. They both make the same amount of sense and you do have to drastically change their canon personalities to make it work. I’m not a big fan of enemies to lovers. But that’s just me.

Now, I do love Scorbus. It’s very Romeo and Juliet with their forbidden love because their families hate each other. There’s not enough good Scorbus out there.

9. Scene that first made me love (or hate) the character

I read the Harry Potter books for the first time in elementary school, so this was a long way back, but I'm going to go with her trial in Goblet of Fire. At that point, the Death Eaters are still a mostly unexplored concept, and there's such a sharp contrast between Bellatrix sitting there declaring how proud she is to go to prison for Voldemort, versus other characters like the Malfoys being very sneaky and deceptive about it. I remember feeling intrigued, but also horrified, and that's basically the feeling that's stuck with me for Bellatrix.

10. Best moment on screen (or in the book)

I love her interactions with Snape and Narcissa at Spinner's End. The three of them, all supposedly allies, but very different people with contrasting attitudes and perspectives ... it's a moment that hints at something complex going on behind the scenes, and it's just very fun to see their dynamics as they interact. It's also a moment where Bellatrix prioritizes her sister over Voldemort, insisting on going to the meeting with her but not actually threatening to reveal what she's doing, which iirc is the only time we get to see that sort of nuance coming from her.

Snape had a temper tantrum and stopped teaching Harry Occlumency. If he had kept up with the lessons, the vision never would have happened, Harry would have never gone to the DOM, and Sirius wouldn't have died. He's as responsible as Kreacher and Bellatrix are (and Narcissa, she was the one Kreacher was passing information too. Everyone always likes to make her out as a poor sad abused wife who just wants what's best for her beloved boy, but lol no she's just a terrible person).

And yes, that's just normal school but for magical children before Hogwarts. Or maybe they continue it through university! I do think it's actually insane that the wizarding world packs their kids off to boarding school at 11. That's fucking bonkers. Some parents out there must elect to keep their kids at home and school them in the usual way, right?????

Is Dudley better than Draco?

I very often come across the opinion that Draco is worse than Dudley. Most often, this opinion is argued by the fact that Dudley did not need to go through Draco's traumatic experience in order to change, and Draco himself changed only when he found himself at the bottom. Seriously? Both boys had completely different life paths and upbringings. Draco and Dudley are completely different.

Dudley and Draco. Upbringing. Dudley and Harry are cousins. They were raised together from infancy. And their relationship is definitely bad. Harry and Dudley can't stand each other, even though they are blood relatives who grew up together all their lives. This was influenced by Petunia and Veronon. Their attitude towards Harry distorted the possible brotherly friendship between the children even in the early stages of the development of their consciousness. The adults created a wall between them. Harry felt hostility and envy towards Dudley. Dudley felt contempt and disgust for Harry. Living in the same house, they were almost enemies. At the same time, they were brought up in a fairly ordinary society. They visited school and various places, interacted with other children and so on. That is, they had ideas about the family, the institution of the family and moral values. Most often, the institution of family means love and support, which clearly was not the case in their relationship. Moral behavior is how children are usually raised in our world. At a minimum, even if they didn’t talk about it at home, at school there could be a topic of conversation about family. Both Dudley and Harry knew that as cousins they should be on good terms and bullying was not right.

Draco grew up in a huge family estate with his parents and elves. Of Draco's closest relatives, only his parents and grandfather were his. Bellatrix and Rodolphus were imprisoned in Azkaban when Draco was one year old. Regulus died before he was born. Anromeda and Sirius were no longer part of the family. It is not known whether Draco knew any of his grandmothers personally. Even if he knew Walburga, it was not for long, since she died when Draco was 5 years old. So it turns out that his family is Narcissa, Lucius and Abraxas. And they are all purebred wizards with the ideology of blood superiority. And as the only people who surrounded him in childhood, they instilled in him their worldview. No one could question this worldview. The elves served the Malfoy family loyally and wouldn't dare say the wrong thing. Malfoy Manor is secluded; Draco clearly did not have the opportunity to play with the neighboring children. The people who could come to visit were like his parents. School? No. Draco, as a member of the aristocracy, received appropriate training. Most likely, he had purebred teachers and tutors who taught etiquette, spelling, art and what else the little gentleman needed to know. Draco was literally cut off from the rest of the world. He was not taught mercy and kindness, he was taught that he was better than others and must live up to this.

Dudley and Draco. Spoiled. Draco and Dudley's desires are spoiled by their parents. As children, they were bought expensive toys and things. They never lacked for anything. However, even if we take the very first book as an example, we will see that both boys are different. Dudley poked his parents with a stick, argued and was unhappy, tried to fight with his father because of Harry's letter. This is literally everything that Draco did not allow himself to do in relation to Narcissa and Lucius. Dudley puts himself above his parents. Draco doesn't question his parents' authority. Dudley is spoiled and believes that since Petunia and Vernon love him, he can do whatever he wants. Draco is spoiled because he is a Malfoy and he knows that he must live up to his status.

Draco. Draco does everything to meet Lucius' expectations. One of the best students in the course, a member of the Quiditch team, a prefect and a death eater. Draco literally did all this for his parents. Academic success was expected of him and he provided it. From childhood he was told that serving their lord was an honor and he served. But, Draco is a bastard. Draco is a coward. Draco is an arrogant bully. Draco could be a better person. But Draco was the best for his parents, high society and status. Draco had no empathy. He did not know how to sympathize with others, he did not know that it was necessary. Draco was boastful and arrogant. But even good people can like to brag and have inflated self-esteem. Draco bullied others. But he didn't know how much it hurt. And only when he myself found meself in the victim’s place did he understand what mental and physical pain was. After Draco finds himself at the bottom, he realizes that everything that made sense before turns out to be not so significant. In the sixth book, his world collapses, and already in the seventh it is built according to a new way of life. His social status is simply terrible. His family fell. He is no longer an arrogant boy. Now he can understand someone else's pain. He stops putting himself above others. At the end of the book series, Draco goes into the future as a completely different person. And this future is bright.

Dudley. I think Dudley was emotionally attached to Harry and when he realized that now they would not meet again, it dawned on him that he did not hate Harry. Perhaps they could be good brothers?

P.s.They're both assholes and that's a fact. They have changed and that is also a fact. They were able to grow up, change and become better people. (This is truly the evolution of Dudley and Draco as characters. For example, Snape and the Marauders never grew up. Remember the meeting of Sirius and Snape in book 3.)

hey so i binged your entire "Nymph of the house Black" series and i have got to say its amazing. Like it takes the common time travel trope but makes it different. Dora isn't a super powered Op who can defeat Dumbledore in seconds and wins over all Slytherins and destroys the horcruxes in a day. I also love that she isn't playing the moral high ground. In a lot of fanfics, the mc just doesn't play dirty and to me its a breath of fresh air to see her do so - obliviating people, not revealing to everyone that she's a time traveller, taking unbreakable vows. And the character reactions, like how everyone doesn't just accept that she has secrets and actually questions her and her story. I also love how she doesn't cave in and just tell remus abt her time travel and its all happily every after. I love how you made her wait till remus was 17.

What I also like is that her relation with remus/es? I will say it up front i am not a huge fan or remus lupin or remadora. I always felt he was too immersed in his self pity and destructive behaviours and Dora deserved better (just my opinion) But your representation was quite nice to see in the sea of chocolate loving uwu remus who can do no wrong. We see the constant struggle by both sides. And it made me enjoy the remadora ship. And even then we see dora lose control and curse Marlene and lupin jumping to conclusions and being stupid which makes it so real. I also like her interactions with the death eaters, like she doesn't just go in the black family and infiltrate like and get all secrets and none is the wiser. She slips many times during the story, we also see her struggling with the whole time travel thing. Which is nice. In most time travels (its usually harry or the golden trio) and they are pretty chill about everything.

I also liked that even though she tried her best alphard and regulus (i thought jily might live and damn did that hurt) still died. It was gut wrenching especially since i thought regulus might live.

I also adored the black family interactions- everyone of them is flawed and it feels real, narcissa's personality isnt just being Lucius' wife and bella while still insane is seen as the formidable and cunning woman she was.

I dont know what i just wrote or why i wrote it but i just finished the series after binging it in like 1.5 day and i am patiently waiting for the updates on the 3rd part. I just finished it a minute ago and had to put my feelings somewhere.

The time-traveling Tonks story was a labor of love. It was born out of the classic "you write what you want to read" and all of the issues you pointed out were tropes I wanted to avoid because I was so sick of seeing them in other stories. I wanted Dora to kick ass and be a strong MC - and in the end, she's really powerful and talented, but still so human. She can do wrong and she makes a LOT of mistakes. She's powerful, but she's not perfect.

It's a point of great pride for me that you liked the way I portrayed the Remadora ship. I can't stand uwu super cutesy Remus. That's a bastardization of his character. He's not a super softie. He has the deep capacity to love but it's matched by self-loathing and jealousy.

My decision to have her struggle with time travel repeatedly came from the same observation. I put myself in her shoes. If I went back in time to the day of my birth I'd lose my shit.

I wanted to write a story that had realistic, gritty emotions, flawed, but good-hearted and sympathetic characters, and fix canon all at once. It's still my favorite story that I've written.

If you like my time travel mechanics, I recommend my Teddy Lupin time travel fic. It's only about 100k words and was another joy to write.

Hi there!

YOU are amazing! And I firmly believe that anyone can write, if they want to. All you have to do is want to do it, and trust me, the words will come. You just need to start!

I wrote a little about outlining in this anon ask.

But if you want something a little more detailed I will try my best, and I'll use my process for writing Pages of You because it's fresh in my mind and I still have all of the plans written out.

And I'll also preface this by saying again: I'm not an expert. I've only been publishing fic since August. Some more seasoned writers might have better insights than I do, but here's what I did for this particular fic:

The first thing I do when planning a story is create a folder for it on my Google Drive: this way, all of my "bits" stay together, from my chapters (I use one doc per chapter) to my outline doc itself, to anything else I include there (picture collages, links to websites I might use for research, that sort of thing; I also rewatched You've Got Mail for inspiration and wrote a bunch of notes to refer to).

Speaking of You've Got Mail - that was my step two. Because I knew I wanted to pull out some influences and scenes from this film, I picked out a few things I knew I wanted to include, including the infamous scene where Tom Hanks's character eats all of the caviar at the dinner party (Draco eats all of the macarons at the business mixer). So I laced these ideas together, made a note of them, and this is where I started my fuzzy outline.

While I left that to simmer, the next thing I did was write 2 short biographies for Harry and Draco, so I knew where they would be at during the start of the story:

... god, I actually used the word yuppie!? Anyway, moving on...

Once I got a feel for who these boys were in this world (including putting some work into how they look: see my Harry mood board), I started drafting out my chapter plans. I always think it's a good idea to think of chapters as mini stories within themselves: they have a beginning, a middle, an end. They don't always have to have a resolution, but I find it helpful to make sure they tie up in a way that a) leaves something answered that was questioned earlier in the chapter, and b) opens up a hook for the beginning of the next chapter, or a continuation.

For example, here is my original outline for Chapters 1 and 2, and this is how I usually sketch them out - by listing what I want to happen:

In writing them, I don't always stick to everything as planned, but I make sure I at least hit all of the major events I wanted to cover: like, Dean and Harry hooking up; Harry getting his summer job; sequence of the letters; Malfoy's opening sign and the family's reaction to it.

And I tend to write all of these out until I come to the end of my story. I will rarely start something without knowing how it ends, but that doesn't mean I don't add little bits and pieces here and there, such as:

speech and dialogue that pops into my head (often while out for a run)

bits and pieces of desktop research (for example, I listened to a podcast series about queer life in the late 70s/80s to get an idea of what club life would be like for Harry, when on his trip to York)

character development

Dean was never supposed to have as prominent a role as he ended up having; I extended out and included some additional chapters to involve him more, and more interaction with Harry via the telephone calls. And Regulus was never meant to have his own chapter either, or much of a part to play really other than the role of the snarky Uncle figure. But he had such a strong voice as I was writing him, and he became really parallel to what Draco was, who he was growing up to be, so it made sense to flesh him out and also take charge of Draco's living situation when Draco was disowned by Lucius and Narcissa. I actually really love this part of the story, and it was never in my original plan.

So that's how I outlined Pages of You. It's not a cut and dry formula; my plans never are. They take lives of their own as I write and I end up forming more chapters as the story flows, but as long as I know where my protagonist(s) starts and then ends up within the story, I feel confident to begin writing.

Hello, Quill! Apologies for the delay, for some reason the numbers were not showing on my tumblr page on desktop and I was too lazy to go and find it on my phone again. (Also I got distracted by my tumblr homepage but that's a whole different story.)

5. what book do you think everyone should read?

Hm, this is a tricky one. I don't usually like saying books people should read, due to me disliking most of the books people say I should read (like Pride and Prejudice and Absolutely True Diary Of Part Time Indian). So like there's books I would like people to read because they mean a lot to me, but not something everyone should read you know?

But if I had to pick a book, it would have to be "The Giver". I know some people hate this book, but I adore it so much. It's like, the whole idea of our whole world is treated the exact same way with such detachment is so fascinating to me. I could go on about this book so much, I love it.

(Also, I have read the whole quartet, but I personally still love the Giver the best.

30. is there a book that changed your life?

Someone is going to make fun of me for this, but either Harry Potter or Carry On by Rainbow Rowell. I have a thing for books about a chosen one at magical bordering school, okay?

But Harry Potter was my first obsession with something others knew about. It was what brought me to fanfic. It was how I made my best friend. I still have Narcissa's Malfoy's wand, although broken, in my toy area. I may not interact with it, but it definitely changed my life.

Carry On, on the other hand, was the first book that i read with an explicitly queer couple. I probably had read books before with queer themes, but not any that had so proudly said it as Carry On. Yes, it has issues but I remember hiding the fact that I read it, because I wasn't supposed to read it. I remember thinking "there are people like me who date someone as the same gender as them?" It was a very eye opening book to me. I still reread it from time to time, and it's one of my favorite books.

42. do you buy new or secondhand books?

I don't actually buy a lot of books, due to me not having a good place to keep them nowadays. But I have a mixture of new and old books. The last few books I have bought were new, due to either being work books or because I couldn't find an copy of the book I needed (it was All The Bright Places, and for some reason the local used book store didn't have it and I didn't feel like trusting Amazon). So I try to buy used books, but it's not always a guarantee.

Recently started revising and reuploading Counting the Stars, a Voldemort Wins AU fic I wrote a couple years ago. ♥️ My writing has improved a lot and I can't wait to see where the revision takes me this time around!

Harry is dead. Voldemort is King. Narcissa is dying and Hermione is the only one who can help. After five years of running and losing the last people she loves, Draco offers her sanctuary in exchange for her experimental healing brew.

Poisoner to the King, Draco is dangerous and slightly unhinged, tolerating her presence as much as he despises it. Hermione is carrying dark secrets that she's doing her best to forget, but her volatile interactions with Draco threaten to destroy the walls she's so carefully built around them.

But Draco's hiding secrets of his own. Secrets with cerulean scales, tiny sharp teeth, and little leathery wings.

Things may seem bleak in Voldemort's dark world, but Hermione won't stop fighting to survive until she runs out of stars to count.
