Rio Youers's Refrigerator Full of Heads is that sequel that takes everything that works so effectively in the first part and amps it up to the point of self-parody. But, sadly, it's no Evil Dead II. It's pure Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2. It's Jason Takes Manhattan. Sure, it's fun for what it is, but it never does the original justice; it never lives up to the characters and premise onto which it's building, opting instead for total destruction and a higher, more extreme body count. Worst of all, it does all of these things without retaining any of the innate charm the fantastic original delivered in spades.

Comics Read 10/08- 22/2022 

I have started a new comic book pile. As its October, I started my selections with the last of the Hill House comics since I have been enjoying them. Unfortunately, for what ever reason I didn’t really like these two. 

The first of these, Daphne Byrne, is written by Laura Marks, art by Kelley Jones (who drew issues of The Sandman, notably the “Seasons of Mist” arc) and colors by Michelle Madsen. I did’t know Marks by name, but on the back the cite her as a writer on The Good Fight, a show I regularly watch. When I looked up her website I realized that I saw her play Bethany. It was memorable, grim and I’d recommend it. So why didn’t this work for me? Part of it is the art often feels off. Comic artists often have trouble conveying the youthfulness of children and adolescents, and that is definitely part of the problem with the fourteen year old protagonist and her classmates. But I also found myself wondering if Jones's drawing has gotten worse over the years, or is this a problem with the change in panels per page decreasing over the years. The change of the sizes has to draw everything to bigger scale where any errors end up jumping out at the reader. The art is best at the most grotesque, and when the situation feels more like dream logic. Granted, by the end there should not be hard and fast delineation between waking and sleeping. But early on it was hard to tell Daphne and her mother apart sometime and the already painful sequences of Daphne being an object of ridicule in school just ugly to read.

But as for not liking the plot, I can’t tell if this is despite or because of my own feelings about  and psychics. I have gone to a few, but not for years and the reason I haven’t is because they would always tell me that I am cursed and that for however much money toward candles burning or something they could free me. I indulged in that a bit, but then had to stop because I knew I was being taken for a ride. People are attracted to the idea of psychics as someone who can recognize something in them that they won’t need to explain. It is about reassurance that things will be fine, that connections from your past have whatever meaning you need them to have. This sounds cynical and I was taken advantage of during a low moment. That might make it seem like this tale which involves spiritualist preying upon a young widow from the point of view of her teenage daughter who has an other worldly companion calling himself her “Brother”, my kind of story about psychics, and yet it isn’t.

The human psychics are grifters and abusers, but the Brother as the guy you want for a psychic consultation. He knows things and is eager to share what Daphne needs to know. Working with him feels like accepting damnation, but this is such a bleak work that it is not really a bad thing. 

In the back matter, Marks discusses how one inspiration for the comic book was thinking of something like The Exorcist or The Omen from the point of view of the children. I’m recovering from COVID while reading and writing all of this, and someday, when I’m not ill, if I were to re-read this when I am not ill, I might try to focus on that inspiration to see if I my opinion changes.

While reading it I though about how a theme for all of Hill House comics is the horror of disorientation. Disorientation of finding oneself in a conspiracy, (Basket Full of Heads). Disorientation of family loss (Dollhouse Family). Disorientation of lost memories (The Low Low Woods). Plunge is something of a zombie story, so that is the disorientation of human bodies that are no longer inhabited by humans. But it’s not really a horror of disorientation. More of a slow moving, but recognizable impending doom.  

Plunge is written by Joe Hill, art by Stuart Immonen and colors by Dave Stewart who I haven’t talked about in a while. It takes place in the Arctic, making its a spiritual cousin of things like the various adaptations of The Thing from Another World. In the back matter, Hill specifically cites John Carpenter films, especially his version of The Thing… as an inspiration. He also mention H.P.Lovecraft “At the Mountains of Madness” but that’s the Antarctic, so nitpick a little.

The plot involves a contemporary shipping crew contracted to an oil company starts getting a signal from one that disappeared in the early 1980s. When they find them the crew’s bodies have all been taken over by an alien parasite. The alien parasites are really into higher mathematics including calculating out all of pi. As the issues go on there the letters in the credits page get replaced with numbers. It made me wonder if it was a critique of over valuing math and science to at the expense of the humanities. The thought that the sciences give a “valuable” truth is helped with the character of an oil exec who is interested in making deals with the aliens despite the fact that they are clearly a threat to the life and safety of the crew. He’s a villain, but when he’s introduced he at least says the right things. The comic is lore heavy and I just wasn’t into the lore. I did like the art. Immonen kept the action clear and had a distinct character designs. Stewarts colors kept things cool and clear. I wish I found it more engaging than I did.

Over the course of reading these I ended up buying recent volumes of comics that I have been reading for a while. I have adjusted my pile for them. I hope to get some excitement back.

Dying is Easy by Joe Hill

"DYING IS EASY. COMEDY IS HARD. AIN'T YOU HEARD?"

How pitch-perfect would Sam Rockwell be for Syd "Sh*t-Talk" Homes?!? Seriously. This was a ton of fun. Joe Hill's Dying is Easy is a wacky murder-mystery that expertly utilizes the genre's procedural mechanics and understands (pitch-black) humor's therapeutic role in death while never going soft on the seediness of the people and places involved and the unpredictability of its well-structured plot. Some major Shane Black vibes—minus the Christmas setting—too. I dug it a whole bunch.
