so i have to regretfully admit i'm not really a fan of JayRoy, or at least i'm not a fan of the popular version of JayRoy. i think JayRoy could work and would be a lot of fun! but i have *zero* interest in New-52!JayRoy (or New-52!Roy in general) or rlly any version of Jason and Roy on the Outlaws together. both bc i'm a pre-Flashpoint stan at heart. usually i can stand newer content for ship fodder but for these two oh man it grinds my gears how badly Roy got fucked over-

BUT BUT. that doesn't mean i think the ship has *no* merit. because Jason and Roy *do* have some fodder in pre-Flashpoint. they meet briefly when Jason is Robin, and then again when Jason is Red Hood during that Outsiders arc where Black Lightning is in prison. so! there's definitely material to work with. especially playing into the more fucked up nature of Roy knowing Jason when he was Robin. i think it's cute if Jason had a childhood crush on Roy. and maybe Roy even thought Jason was kind of cute, a spunky kid with a lot of energy and passion. then with Jason as Red Hood, Roy openly doesn't trust him and doesn't like that they're working with him. Jason is just a run-of-the-mill villain with a nasty kill count. and sure, Roy's got a record of tangling with people more on the villain side of things, but even going near the Red Hood feels like a step too far.

adding Tim to the mix is really fun. bc honestly it gives Roy some kind of a fetish for guys who have been Robin and i find that to be delightful. like, even if Roy just sees Jason as the Red Hood, he can't *quite* let go of the image of Jason as Robin. like it just won't get out of Roy's system ever since Jason came back. i think, if i were to write these three together, i'd have Roy and Tim get together first of all people, just because Roy is trying really hard to stop thinking about Jason as Robin, especially now that Jason is older and a little meaner. he's full of guilt about it, and he can't talk to Dick because he's still not sure where Dick's feelings fall about the whole Jason thing so. he goes to Tim instead, thinking if he fucks a different Robin, maybe he'll get it out of his system. Tim's pretty and he's just old enough that it's not *too* morally questionable for Roy to seek him out. it takes a while for Roy to work up the nerves because he and Tim aren't particularly close, so how do you even approach that conversation to make it look organic. it's awkward and Tim can definitely tell something is up but hey, who's going to say no to Roy Harper offering sex? one of Dick's best friends? especially if we put this right after Kon and Bart's death where Tim is just. sort of lonely and seeking companionship. in some ways,, Roy would remind him of Kon, just a little. that sort of cocky attitude and snarky smile.

i would add Jason in by having JayTim happen alongside RoyTim. it's not like Roy and Tim are serious enough to be exclusive and Tim knows Roy is sleeping around, so Tim ends up in a weird hatefucking situation with Jason, which definitely was not supposed to happen. Jason just has a damning way of getting under Tim's skin and won't stop bothering Tim until he gets some kind of attention from Tim. and somehow Jason is interesting enough for Tim to cave. and he doesn't even think about the two relationships he's balancing until he happens to sleep with Jason after being with Roy the night before and there are still marks all over him and Jason does *not* like sharing. so when he interrogates Tim and gets nothing, he does the reasonable thing of stalking Tim to figure out who it is. and it just happens to be the guy Jason had a crush on as a kid.

i think Roy finding out he tried so hard to avoid Jason that he accidentally ended up with the same fuck buddy as Jason would be the funniest thing in the world. like it's not something he can run from anymore and he has to accept that. he tries to awkwardly ask what Tim even sees in the guy bc well, Jason's a killer and not known for being mentally stable. but he's also the guy who exonerated Black Lightning with no real motive besides just helping out. he's complicated and Roy doesn't know how to react. Tim just sort of shrugs bc how do you even explain Jason Todd and well, one thing leads to another and Tim ends up in the middle of the most emotionally charged threesome he's ever been in. love the idea of Jason and Roy using Tim as a toy while they work out their feelings for each other. to me that's the peak dynamic. Jason and Roy are pissed about liking each other and somehow, Tim got roped into things. their relationship is not healthy or normal whatsoever, but somehow, they end up balancing each other out nicely.

background BruDick is also hilarious tho. bc there is no one who hates Bruce more than Oliver and he'd be so annoyed that not only did Roy get tangled up with the Bats, but now everything is so weird their families are pretty tangled together and Oliver has to deal with Bruce a lot more than he wants to. and he's glaring daggers about it the whole time.

Wait... Hold on... What if... Fanboy Gen?

Let me explain.

Imagine Gen in his early days of showbiz, when no one knew him, trying his best to please his audience and climb the stair of showbiz, but then he receives an "hate" email containing criticism (constructive criticism but yk) with harsh words.

Obviously, he was upset or mad and wanted to ignore the message but it ligers on the back of his head making him conscious of his tricks and stage persona.

Then he noticed improvement from following this hate message. He brushed it off but then more messages from the same guy containing criticism kept arriving. (Like no good job or that he improved, just more hard cold criticism and science)

He was mad, at first but then he realised that this guy was watching his every show with attention and wanted to help him by pointing out his mistakes, and in all honesty, it worked! His carrier sailed from fixing his mistakes mentioned in the email and became our famous Gen we know and love.

At this point Gen looked forward to receiving another email from him (a certain s_ishigami@ramen), he concluded that this hater of his is straightforward and didn't bother to sugar cote. Even though his words were harsh, there's no better fan? Hater? Well, there's no better audience he could ask for. You can even say, he was fond of this mysterious person before even meeting them.

So, petrification happens bla bla and bla, Gen meets Senku for the first time, cool, he's a mad scientist that finds his book trash and it makes him miss his personal #1 hater. Then more stuff happened and when it was revealed that Senku's last name was Ishigami, a light bulb popped up on his head.

Senku Ishigami was the person he adored the most in the modern world, and now he got to meet him.

(Heheheheheh, I'm giggling and kicking my feet at my own ideas, it is so cute.)

read the vampirism chapter and I have... a lot to think about

i was right on the money with the speculation that l drago/ryuga's dark move would be low hanging fruit for this chapter. that much is fun to know, and it fits so perfectly I almost don't want to do it. hikaru's battle in particular fits really well with classic literature connotations of vampirism

however I don't know if I want to fully dive into all the connotations due to the sensitive nature of some of them (such as grooming, and taking advantage of girls specifically whether explicitly sexual or otherwise). on one hand, I don't want to do a disservice to my analysis. on the other, maybe beyblade isn't the place to talk about these things with. that being said though I'm an adult and well within my rights to make adult content, and I wonder how closely I'm toeing the line between being sensitive about a sensitive issue and full on self censorship.

the happy medium is probably just putting a content warning and a "skip to" area in the post. and it's not like beyblade has never covered tough topics-- metal fusion dealt a lot with gingka's grief, yu was a child who was manipulated and used, and battle bladers was carefully constructed to emotional ruin as many of gingka's friends as possible in a very direct attempt to break gingka's psyche. metal masters has hikaru and tsubasa dealing with their own manifestations of ptsd. iirc Toby is a kid who's experimented on (I still need to finish the rewatch...). the list goes on.

anyway I'm rambling. back on the topic of vampirism itself, i had an educated guess going into the chapter as to what the symbolism could be, but the examples given were far more extensive than what I initially thought. that's why I want time to truly digest it, and maybe also reread the chapter to try and reabsorb the key points. then it gave examples of subversions and tweaks to the trope of the "classic" vampire, and even brought ghosts and doppelgangers into the mix.

besides direct symbolism, the chapter asked you to consider what exactly made them scary. if they represent something beyond just a bloodsucking monster, they're more likely to be, at least subconsciously, terrifying. even if you don't pick up on what they're meant to represent. contrast this to a vampire that stands for nothing and just exists for a thriller plot line; this is likely to be scary while you're reading, but in the end it'd be ultimately forgettable.

but yeah. to do: reread the chapter, compile thoughts, brainstorm another situation for beyblade vampirism bc I don't want to go for the easy answer, and if I must write the essay on l drago, make sure I have a hell of a lot more to say than "bro just think about it for five seconds"

All the Eds have issues in their home lives, but there is something about Edd’s family situation that I just find endlessly fascinating. Just really delving into the complicated baggage surrounding it, and how uniquely fucked up it is.

The fact that there is so much distance and lack of communication between Edd and his parents really brings up a lot of questions about WHAT their actual interactions are even like. I mean, while they are largely absent (even for a show whose whole premise does not include parents being visible), it is implied that they, or at least one of them comes home. Do they even talk to their son when they are there?

I think the thing that really gets me is that, while yes they do supply for their son’s physical needs: a comfortable home, food, etc. the emotional needs are completely neglected. Which speaks to a super specific, entitled suburban kind of disinterest that I find uniquely cruel.

Writers, here’s your reminder that you should be doing warm-ups!

Athletes need to warm up. Musicians need to warm up. Artists need to warm up. Heck, I even have to play a few matches in video games before I get into a groove every day.

Warm-ups help you get into the right headspace, give you more control of your actions and word choice, get you comfortable in your physical setting (eg: with your keyboard, notebook, tablet, or whatever you're writing with), and spark creativity.

Even if you don’t think you have spoons to write, sit down and do a couple warm-ups. If you still don’t want to, that’s alright. But. I think you’ll be surprised how often they help break that ice.

5-15 minutes is all you need. I personally set a timer for ten minutes each time and do not stop writing until the time is up. Your warm-up can be anything at all so long as it gets you writing and starts nudging those creative juices.

Here's some common warm-ups:

Journaling. Just jot down some notes about your day. Feel free to really lean into something that you noticed. We're going for description and details -- try to avoid settling into a spiral or focusing on something negative that will upset your creativity.

Short story prompts. Type that into Pinterest and pick the most ridiculous, cliche thing you can. Write a little scene, story summary, or even a rant about why you do or don't like the prompt. Just write.

Vocab challenge. If you like a bit more critical thinking to get you in the zone, have a random vocabulary word generator spit out five or so words. Check their meanings and jot down a little story or thought that includes all five. You get more familiar with beautiful and descriptive language, and it gives you a much narrowed prompt (which is lovely if you're like me and suffer each time there's an open-ended task assigned).

Character moments. Try putting your character into a generic setting and write down almost meticulously what their thought process would be. Follow them realizing they've just stepped in mud or dreading the start of the day. Pick a mundane thing and describe them working through it. This will not only get your writing going, but it will wake up the character's voice in your head.

Ongoing storytelling. Did you know that Whinnie the Poo was A.A. Milne's warm up story? He would jot down a quick little story with those very basic characters and did so every day. Whatever came to mind. He kept writing little tidbits on the same characters and eventually it turned into a series. Having that ongoing plot with isolated scenes and simple characters can help you feel more motivated to sit down and write.

Get-to-know-you-questions. Google a list of basic first-date questions (there are a million out there) and answer one yourself. Go into specifics. Where do you most want to travel and why? Let yourself ramble until the question is fully answered.

Writer's block blues. This is a favorite of mine. If you're truly stuck, write about being stuck. Eg: 'I'm supposed to write for ten minutse, but that feels so stupid and impossible. No one is goign to read this anyway. I have no ideas and the page is so overwhelming when its blank. I used to be able to write on and on and nothing could stop me. it was like breathing. but now I have nothign and do nothing and I can't even do a stupid prompt-' Even the rambling and ranting got me writing. It made things easier. It made writing this post easier. Also -- notice the typos? Yeah, don't fix those. You're in writing mode, not editing mode when you're doing this. If you edit while you write, you're forcing yourself to stay in your executive and calculating headspace rather than falling fully into creativity and dream. Ignore the mistakes. That's for future you to handle.
