thinking about how odysseus says athena is "prideful", how how pride is something zeus says he will undress, make yield, how athena doesn't say she's hoping to save "the life of one who is far from home" but a "friendship with one who is far from home", how friendship is something so uniquely human, how it makes us desperate, how it makes us forget ourselves and our place because we care for each other, how perhaps the bond of community gives us the greatest pride of all, the pride of knowing we are together and stronger for it, the pride of our shared humanity, and gods cannot be human, and how maybe athena was not punished for being too proud but for being too human

With the Thunder Saga’s release, we now have an album for each of the Big Three that match their dominions/power alignments: Poseidon’s Ocean Saga, Hades’ Underworld Saga, and Zeus’ Thunder Saga. But only Poseidon and Zeus have appeared (at least so far). And as someone who favors Hades amongst the three, this struck me as interesting. When Odysseus and his crew have faced Poseidon and Zeus, there is no doubt that they are in danger and inevitably suffer many casualties (Ruthlessness and Thunder Bringer). Hades is the only one of the three to grant some level of safety. Odysseus goes into the Underworld to avoid Poseidon and once they leave, they eventually deal with Zeus. I don’t doubt that Hades knows they’re there. It’s his domain after all. He knows all that goes on in it. Sure, the Underworld does present some danger but it’s worth noting that the crew suffers no casualities in the Underworld. They get to see those they’ve lost as they travel through it, which is emotionally devastating but also kind of a gift in a way? Especially for Odysseus with his mom. It’s a “seeing them one last time until they join them” situation. But the Underworld doesn’t seem to directly intend to harm them, not like the ocean or the weather. I find this neat considering that Hades tends to have a poor (undeserved in my opinion) reputation in modern media, often being depicted as the villain between his brothers, which is wild considering the things his brothers get up to. And yet here, not only is he absent unlike the other two but he is also being presented as the safest. Maybe I’m reading a touch too much into it but I feel like there’s something to be said about this. 🤔

Can't believe I didn't think of framing it like this sooner, but Odysseus totally trolley-problemed his way through the Thunder Saga.

It was an active choice of his to divert his and his crew's path home through the lair of Scylla, where a few men would die, versus if he'd done nothing, many more would likely die. But the crew only saw his choice to let those men on the "other track" get killed, ignoring that disaster awaited them on both sides. And Odysseus, who earlier in his journey might have sought an alternative, now only saw the two choices: Poseidon or Scylla.

Earlier, his route was like a road that can be stuck to or left behind. But his mindset and these two options truly made his route into a track. And just like a trolley car, there is no way he can leave it. He can only choose whether or not to pull the lever.
