There were many words for the giant beings. Sentinels. Guardians. Watchers. Keepers. Most called them Wardens. They were gargantuan, towering beings, standing taller than most buildings. They wore armor like that of a knight, made of an unknown metal that could not be dirtied, that no conventional weapon could pierce or scratch. What they looked like underneath that armor, no one knew. A brave few had tried to slip in through the gaps, hungry for knowledge that seemed so within reach, but there were no gaps to be found. Not even the helmets far above, where there were slots, presumably for the beings to see through, granted any entry. Some invisible barrier kept even the light from penetrating into that armor. 

Be it legend or history, it was said that the Wardens were gifts from the Gods, sent to protect the land and its people from otherworldly threats. They were mighty, unbreakable warriors, able to repel the worst evils any realm could produce. 

Or so it was said. 

No one could remember a time when any ungodly monsters ever descended upon the land. No one could remember the Wardens ever waking from their slumber to fight and defend. No one could even remember the last time a Warden moved. Believers claimed that they were simply dormant, and only came to life when truly needed. Nay-sayers thought the whole tale was a crock of shit, that they were nothing more than huge, decorative statues that royals used as symbols of their egos. 

It was true that royalty in Palendra regarded the Wardens highly. Monarchs of the past few centuries liked to claim the Wardens’ as their own, though they had no means of actually harnessing their would-be power. Royal crests and seals depicted the Wardens, and the royal guard donned shining armor styled after them. 

One such guard in Warden armor sighed loudly. He stood at attention as he was supposed to, but there was a laziness to his posture. 

“Princess Ivy,” he said, doing his best to temper the exasperation in his voice, “there are storm clouds gathering from the south. We should head inside before they let out.” 

Seated on the wall against a stone pillar, Ivy continued with her charcoal, scraping it across the parchment in her book. She regarded the new strokes for a moment, then smudged at them with her blackened fingers. 

“Princess,” the guard said, sounding more annoyed. “Princess.”

Ivy rolled her head back and groaned. “Ugh. Golrin, you’re interrupting my process! If you have to go take a piss so badly, then by all means! You’re dismissed!” 

Though his face was hidden under his helmet, she could tell that Golrin was rolling his eyes at her. He’d been her personal guard for nearly ten years now, almost half of her life; she knew how to read him through his armor. 

“Oh, pardon my interruption, Your Highness,” he said, speaking much less formally than he would had they not been alone. Ivy liked it better when he talked to her like this. All of those fake, flowery manners that people were supposed to use around her got so exhausting. Golrin continued, “Much as I would love to do just that, I’m afraid your parents would have me drawn and quartered if I dared to let you out of my sight. Dismissed or otherwise.” 

Ivy snapped her book shut, the charcoal piece held between the pages, and slid off of the wall. She tucked the book under her arm, and gestured to the towering metal form behind her. “Nothing’s gonna happen to me while he’s around. You can go!” 

Golrin snorted. He crossed his arms over his chest and tipped his head up, regarding the Warden. Where they stood, on one of the highest rooftops of the castle, they only just barely reached the middle of its chest plate.“You don’t actually believe that,” he said. “That Warden’s never moved before. And it certainly isn’t going to move for you if you decide to take a tumble over the wall.”

Yeah, you mentioned, but again, what does it have to do with me?” His face twists indignantly. “And, hey, it’s not nice to tell someone they look like an evil guy, you know.” “He’s not evil!” “He had spooky shadow tentacles and stood on literal human bones." -- Wei Wuxian gets some answers about this strange little town, only to be left with even more riddles and a desire to solve them all.

Wei Wuxian slumps against the door, rattling the silver bell above. The back of his head smacks against the wood. He hardly notices the soreness radiating from his bump from yesterday.

Fingers press against his cheeks. So hot. Burning.

He hopes he didn’t sweat through his sweater, that would have been embarrassing. What would Lan Zhan have thought if he’d seen sweaty pit stains? Lan Zhan is probably the kind of Asian that just never sweats, ever.

Lan Zhan.

Lan Zhan.

Wei Wuxian slaps his cheeks. He needs to calm down. He needs to remember how breathing works. Or what legs that aren’t jelly feel like.

A throat clears from the dining room. Popo watches him from where she stands in the doorway leading into the kitchen, hands covered in flour and brows raised so high up they disappear into her silver fringe.

“Everything alright there?” she asks in a tone that says she knows everything is not alright, thank you.

“Popo,” Wei Wuxian replies, breathless despite his chest lifting up and down like he just ran a marathon. “I did it. I fixed it.”

Somehow, her raised brows turn more unimpressed as Popo slow claps three times. Flour sifts through the air around her like falling snow, crystals catching in her hair. Wei Wuxian is starting to wonder if her hair is really grey or if she’s just always covered in a layer of flour.

“Congrats. Come help me in the kitchen when you’re making sense again,” she says. She shakes her head and returns to the kitchen, leaving Wei Wuxian heaving by the entrance.

Which is just dandy because a series of hysterical, sharp giggles burst from his mouth. It sounds a little bit like a hyena dying. Like a lot of hyenas dying.

Sweat sticks to the back of his neck, trickling under his sweater. Did Popo crank up the heat? Why does it feel like a million degrees right now?

Wei Wuxian lets out another high-pitched sound that could be either a laugh or a wail. He bolts from the entryway, up the stairs, and into his room.

Popo is right. He really needs to calm down. He just…doesn’t know if he can, yet.

Have you ever read a short novel called "the Gnoll Credo"? If not, I think you would like it since it depicts Gnolls as an actual complex people with biology & sociology based on actual spotted hyenas instead of the universally evil demonic hordes of murder-monsters that WotC made these Hyena-people into.

I've had that book recommended to me before! I did look into it-- the preview was interesting, but I haven't read the whole thing. It seems like it's part fictional ethnography, part manifesto? It's the latter part that doesn't seem like it would appeal to me. It seems like it takes itself very seriously as a "back-to-nature" sort of call to action/philosophy (I guess the author is paleo as well??), and that's the kind of thing that makes me a bit skeptical. idk, I like a bit more fun with my fictional creatures. I love thoughtful gnoll worldbuilding (and nonhuman worldbuilding in general), but I'm not as much into it as the vehicle for any sort of profound takes on human nature and existence or the "right" way to live or something.

Very important screenshot from the next episode preview. Episode 1082 is just Chapter 1055 which is what it needs to be. Nami at the shooting gallery was a great added bonus moment, exactly what you love to see especially when a big part of the point of the episode is how Kiku's conspicuously not there. Law's little "hyena" bit is framed in a way that makes me a lot more confident in the association and I like using the battle in a field of flowers, especially the nice shot on them when Momo's starting the big "people about to leave" speech.

What I thought was cool though is the preview. Let's see what happens, but knowing the next chapter it seems like they showed us scenes in reverse. If you don't think about it much it seems kinda like Kiku here is involved in whatever Kin/Momo were running around about. This will be the fun one to see, how we handle her absence when she's back around. But for now...we know it wasn't an error Kiku changes clothes and check the shawl! Great addition.

Odessa didn’t take many days off. Sure, she got them regularly, as was required by her union and her contract. Everyone got days off. But Odessa struggled with doing nothing. She was an engineer on a ship, and there was always work to be done.

Her folks back home would constantly tell her that working did not count as a hobby, and that she needed to find something else to occupy herself on her off days. “You’re going to work yourself to death, Des!” they’d tell her.

Well, she wasn’t dead yet.

But today, she was actually trying to not work. Callan’s idea. Odessa waited on a bench in the busy atrium. She fidgeted with her hands and her exosuit. It was all she could do to keep from pulling up work files on her U-tool. She’d promised Callan that she wouldn’t.

Well, technically, she’d promised him that she wouldn’t work while she was with him. He wasn’t here yet…

No. Odessa shook her head. No loopholes. She wanted this break. She did.

Yuu sighed. “I have to steal a photo from the Atlantica Memorial Museum, and give it to Azul before the sun sets on the third day after signing.”

A beat of silence passed.

“Damn… sucks to be you,” Ruggie said.

“Hey! We ain’t even gotten started yet! Don’t go jinxin’ us!” Grim shouted, finally joining the conversation.

“Isn’t the Atlantica Memorial Museum underwater? How are you gonna get there, brainiac?” The hyena beastman asked.

“Azul gave us water-breathin’ potions,” Grim said.

“No idea how well they work, though…” Jack added.

“If Azul gave ‘em to you, they probably work just fine,” Ruggie assured them. “He’s got his pride. I doubt he’d ever give someone a wonky potion.”

“I’d get the ball rollin’ now, if I were you,” Leona said. “Time is money, as they say.”

“Good call,” Jack agreed. “With only three days, we don’t have any leeway here.”

“I’m gonna grab Ace and Deuce!” Grim said, jumping up from his seat. “We gotta bring them along, too!”

Yuu shoved the last few bites of their food into their mouth, then got up to go retrieve the potions from the pile of their stuff in Leona’s room.
