They were sitting in the gryffindor common room when he said it.
“I used to like you, y’know.”
It was a simple enough statement; six words, no more than five letters apiece. But it still took James a moment to process.
“You- what?” He asks Regulus, who’s evading his eye contact.
“Yeah,” he shrugs. “Some time last year. I thought- I mean, well, you seemed like you would be… good.”
James’ ears are ringing and he still can’t seem to comprehend the words falling out of Reg’s mouth. A million thoughts are racing though his mind, and he can’t decide which ones to voice.
“You should have said something,” he finally decides on. “Before, I mean. You should have… asked me out.”
Regulus shakes his head, still finding his vision wandering anywhere but James’ eyes. “You were so dead set on Lily. I mean it- you were obsessed with her, and you know it. Don’t lie to yourself. You wouldn’t have even considered a yes for anyone else.”
I would have for you, James thought, only you. No one else, Regulus. He never voiced these opinions aloud.
“Do you- do you still?” James asked carefully. Because I do, was left unmentioned.
Regulus shrugged. It didn’t say much, but it was enough of a response. Only now did the younger boy meet his eyes- his expression was one James couldn’t place. Regret? Longing? Maybe a glimmer of hope?
James wanted to say more- he wanted to say something at least, but he couldn’t. The words got caught in his throat. So he didn’t speak a word.
And neither did Regulus.
And that was that.
