Talking about English I was watching infinity train cause someone mentioned it on twitter and somehow i found all episodes but they had no subtitles so i thought "well you know english, were is the issue?"

Apparently, the issue is that i'm so used to have subtitles on (in English) that i couldn't make out words that i knew because i couldn't discern the sounds.

It was quite hard, especially for those who had an accent and most of the script is pretty... well, it makes zero sense because it was all in context with whatever was going on in the car, so anyway this is what you get when you always rely on subtitles.

Btw, i saw a fic that gave Mandroid's full name as Atlas Meridian and at first thought it was canon. Please tell me it isn't. Tfwiki doesn't have anything after Home, part 2.

(I haven't seen the second batch, really i've barely seen anything because cartoons never come with subtitles, especially pirated ones. But i have pretty good idea about the first drop's events, the second one's only what i've accidentally "overheard" on tumblr. As far as i know it isn't even being translated to my native language either)

Okay so I know his last name is Meridian, but this is the first time I've seen any indication of a first name??

I always as a rule use subtitles, it's hard for me to watch a show without them because sometimes words can get a little jumbled for me, but not once did I see anyone refer to him with his first name??

They've only referred to him as "Dr. Meridian" or "Mandroid", afaik, so the first name Atlas might be some creativity via that mentioned fic's author.

Hey question, how long have you been learning hebrew / what method, I've been wanting to pick it back up for a while now, but I've been having a hard time, any recomendations?

I started sometime like a year or two ago I think, but I have been very distracted and most days not really learning.

I started with Duolingo, which has since gotten worse and worse in terms of functionality tbh, but the writing system lessons are actually really useful for learning to read unfamiliar characters (in general, not just for Hebrew). If you try the regular lessons, I highly recommend checking the discussion page for nearly every sentence you come across. There will be a lot of idiots saying idiotic things as with any public, largely unmoderated forum, but there are also a lot of helpful people there, native speakers and advanced learners answering questions, providing trasliterations, and correcting the course itself when it's wrong. A few of those are mine, but unfortunately last year Duo froze the forums permanently with no forewarning, so it's no longer possible to comment or vote, but the archive is still valuable. Not all sentences have sound but this is because no good text to speech services exist for Hebrew and therefore they hired real voice actors, which means they couldn't do all the words and sentences in the entire course.

As Duolingo's quality fell and I grew frustrated with the Hebrew course's idiotic priorities (e.g. learning "import" long before "bathroom" and being forced to memorize literally a hundred verbs in a row before moving on), I looked for other solutions, but it seems like most cost money.

One decent alternative I found is Clozemaster, which isn't perfect, the free version only lets you practice 30 sentences a day and the audio is pretty bad and sometimes incorrect, but the real selling point is it lets you practice words in order of how common they are which means no more waiting years to learn past tense and other things that are immensely useful but arbitrarily labeled "advanced" a lot of the time. Additionally, it lets you say "no need to practice this again, I know it already" so you can minimize the time (and your limited sentences) you waste on repeating things that don't need repeating, as well as "I don't think I'm gonna remember this just yet, please repeat it again soon" in case you're struggling with something!

Other resources I use:

Pealim.com - a Hebrew dictionary, you can search English words, Hebrew words (in any inflected form), and roots! It doesn't give you a lot of detail on the meaning, but it does explain a lot about the inflection patterns which is super useful for understanding how roots and inflections behave. Also has some articles on grammar and such, but I haven't actually read any of them...

Wiktionary.org - Wikipedia except a dictionary, search words in any language, get definitions, etymology, pronunciation, examples, usage notes, and/or translations depending on the word and the language (just like some Wikipedia articles are more informative than others). I used it a lot today to check if I was using a word correctly after looking it up on Pealim. If there isn't a lot of information in English, chances are there's more if you change the language to Hebrew, but you'll probably need help understanding it.

Friends who are fluent. A bit harder to share this one, but I want to acknowledge that this is something I have access to. My boyfriend has lived most his life in Israel so that helps.

Avatar: The Last Airbender Hebrew Dub - Yes that's right you can literally just watch ATLA in Hebrew for free without a VPN right on Nickelodeon's own site! Iirc, there are no subtitles until season 2, and only in Hebrew, but it's great practice listening and trying to understand and if you're cool and have binged the show multiple times already, that'll help provide context and make it easier to understand what they're saying. Whenever you notice a word being said a lot, try to look it up with one of the above resources! And when you're done with that, there's a lot more shows available there! Do note that some episodes are missing, the episodes aren't perfectly in order, and there is one mislabeled episode that's actually Spongebob near the end, but the real episode is also there.

Israeli/Jewish music - I've been listening to a lot of music in Hebrew and enjoying seeing how I slowly understand more and more, also has helped me understand thick Yiddish accents instead of just Academy approved Israeli Hebrew (Hebrew voice acting is incredibly restricted and idk it's weird).

Avatar The Last Airbender

THE TV SHOW, DEFINITELY NOT ANYTHING ELSE… (there is no movie in Ba Sing Se)

Not a movie, but still the best series of all time. It deserves to be mentioned and it deserves to be number one. Nothing compares. Labelled a kids show but it is so much more than that. The Asian culture, the redemption arcs, the characters, the plot, Zuko. I genuinely feel bad for anyone who never had the pleasure of seeing this.. and I don’t mean that in a degrading way. Many adults have recently watched this for the first time and love it. It’s a masterpiece. It changed my life and I will love this show forever.

Les Intouchables

The last movie I ever watched with my grandma before she passed away. It’s such a beautiful story of the meaningful friendship between two men, one who’s just trying to survive and scrape by and one who is fully paralyzed and is looking for a caretaker. Probably the most inspirational movie I have ever seen. It’s a French movie but with subtitles it is very enjoyable and I HIGHLY recommend.

Encanto

Perfect. I love this movie so much. It’s my comfort movie. Probably because I too was raised in a tight, close family with my grandma being the matriarch. I love Mirabel and as an autistic person I really relate to her and her struggles of not belonging and being left out constantly. (I’m doing much better nowadays, don’t worry haha) I also love the Colombian culture and the story. The songs are bops too. It’s so refreshing to see a Disney movie that doesn’t entirely revolve around the female main character being obsessed with a handsome man. This story is about family and it’s beautiful.

A classic. I can’t find the words to describe it. It’s just a beautiful, inspiring masterpiece. It’s insane how ahead this movie was of its time. Humans truly are the bad guys for a lot of living beings. If you haven’t seen it you really need to. The spirituality, the love story, the alien culture, the LANDSCAPES OMG.

Better than the first one imo. And that’s saying a lot because I love the first movie. I just love the story and the sisterly bond between Anna and Elsa. I love Olaf, I love Kristoff, I love Sven. Reindeers are truly better than people.

A Cure For Wellness

My favorite horror movie. It’s such a mindfuck. It’s creepy, disturbing and it keeps you thinking from start to finish. Such a unique concept too, a horror movie in a wellness resort. It kinda makes my want to go there too if I didn’t know what happens. I highly recommend if you’re into psychological horrors/thrillers. There are no jumpscares.

Get Out

A horror movie again, but without jumpscares (maybe some tiny ones but they aren’t too bad). Without giving too much of the plot away, the stuff happening behind closed doors…It’s so messed up and it’s so sad that this is loosely based off of current racism POC are still facing. I do think the story sends a very good message though and I am glad it was made by Jordan Peele who is POC himself. The main character Chris is a very funny and intelligent person and it’s so satisfying to see a main character in a horror movie make all the right choices though.

Summer Rain - Nanna Haute Kristensen

By reversing the practice we did on Tuesday with "Stew with Za'atar" watching this radio publication without sound first left a lot to the imagination.

For me it was hard to gauge what the publication was about at first, There were no indicators as to who was speaking other than the use of language like "mum" and there were many gaps in the video where the screen remained white and empty.

The context came in the form of the text implying someone being sick and shaving their head, the rest was up to the viewer to understand, and watching this without sound, I only realised it was a somber story around the halfway mark.

I envisioned a soft piano score, the sound of rain and maybe the sounds of a household. Although the text suggested laughter, I couldn't really picture it in the sound design as the feelings were a bit muddled for me.

Watching the visual with sounds created a far more in depth experience within the storytelling. The sound of the shower at the beginning created a parallel with the idea of the rain, inferring the ideas of water becoming a vessel for change and rebirth. I wouldn't have guessed it was a young child in another room calling out to her mother without the audio, as there was no suggestion by the text that this was the case.

We also gained much more insight into the mother's plight as she held back sobs and cried over the sounds of the shaving. Whilst the shaving was a hard moment in the initial watch without sound, the viewing with sound it was almost like a bonding moment for the family, the laughter made sense in that moment with that context.

The rain at the end with the breathing and pausing created room for the narrator to step in and feel stronger, something we didn’t get to witness as without the audio, there was no indicator of a narration.

I feel as though there were many straightforward ways to indicate these contextual moments, such as use of colour to indicate who's talking, or even the textual alignment. There also could've been some sort of captioning for the audio to provide more insight into the story being told.

My thoughts are still in beginner stages as to what could be included to create a more accessible space, so they are quite basic ideas, but I feel as though I'm slowly getting a grasp on what these ideas are suggesting and meaning.

I'ts my favorite fact that I learned in an online class because it means that we are a little different every time we sleep a little and I like that. Today I went to work, I'm training at clinical archive department, but suddenly they call me to have an express training work in the emergency department to cover for someone who is going to be absent, so tomorrow I'm going to work 12 hours there. Aaaaaaaahhhh I'm very nervous, it's going to be my first time in that department, the recepcionist let me practice a little today and I think I get it the basic, but I'm very nervous because of people, many times I deal with rude patients and since it is that department I feel that because of all the stress and fear that is concentrated there I think they could be a little more, I am somewhat afraid of making a big mistake for that; sadly because of this I can't go for my sign class tomorrow, and I was exited because I was to exchange a book with a classmate, she would lend me her book "Before December" and I would give her "Little women". My plans for today is rest at home watching some anime, doing exercise, make the dinner to my family (I think I'm going to do spaghetti), and cleaning a little, maybe call my best friend, it's been weeks since I talk to him (I want to talk to you about him later, he is amazing!)

I rewatched ATLA some years ago, I didn't watch it since childhood and I love that now I could understand it more, last year I rewatched it but now with TLoK and OMG she an amaizing character, I wanted to introduce my brother to them but sadly we couldn't watch TLoK because there no subtitles in spanish to him, but at leat he loves ATLA.

You said that you identified with Korra and Zuko, but I did it with a lot with Aang and Roku, I understood a lot of what Aang happened to reach the avatar state, the pressure to meet the expectations of others and the pressure to develop a potential that you are not ready for, looking for balance to do the right thing without wanting to hurt others, among many many other things, with Roku...God I feel him every time the way he always supports other people, his kindness, the way he guides Aang, also with Iroh, he is a character who left behind a hard life and suffered so much but decided to live in harmony with his heart and heal his past, well thinking better I think he is more like someone to spire for, I am still in the process, but I hope one day to have as much peace with myself as he does.

Do you know this MBTI personality test? I did it out of curiosity to know which characters have the same character as me, to my surprise a lot of my favorite characters in different shows are the same as me, for ATLA I have the same as the concept of air nomads, the avatar state (I have my dubs), The Avatar (as I learned about their different stories, in some way I felt identified with all of them. I couldn't say how true this test is, but at least here I felt identified as well) and the Avatar Roku, it made sense to me, I understand him on every challenge he faced.

I don't remember too much TLoK because I just watched one time, I think I'm going to watch it again these days; I just watch the first episode of the live action and I love it, everything, I'm looking forward to see the next episode (I forgot to pay netflix :'c )

If you were in that universe, would you like to master an element? I definitely do, water or air, maybe air, I really liked the philosophy of life of the air nomads and I would love to be the avatar too.

I'm currently watching anime again, I'm watching some funny romance animes, also there's this manga yaoi that I'm currently reading, I already watched the anime when I was teenager but never read the manga, one day I remember that I really loved the ending song and since then I'm listening everyday, so I wanted to read it too, and... I have too much to say about it, but I'm going to let it to another day.

Having just rewatched Ultimatum, one of the small things I'm quietly obsessing over is when the guards uncover Robyn from the rubble at the very beginning.

Because, like, logic dictates that if you find someone, even of they're a prisoner, whose been trapped under a piece of the ceiling, the first thing you should do is check if they're hurt. That's the natural, human response.

These two... do not do that.

Instead, they point their guns at the woman who, again, I cannot stress this enough, just got a building collapsed on her. Their immediate concern isn't to check if she's alright, it's to move her to another prison. And, it's not subtitled, but just before this the guy pointing the gun at her says 'Don't move!'

So, to recap, their immediate priority on finding someone trapped under a piece of rubble big enough to almost completely cover her is to do the bare minimum to confirm her identity, immediately move to contain her without even checking to see if she's uninjured, and threaten violence if she does anything at all to give them an excuse.

It's been said before, but it bears repeating - the Atlas military is a profoundly fucked system, and I will be extremely glad to watch it burn.

So while I’m not fond of Peppa Pig, I do find this discussion interesting. And it did make me go check if I could follow Peppa Pig (I can, easily, I know most of the words if not all - though I’m watching without subs so I might miss a little bit).

Ok back to Peppa Pig discussion, of all things lol.

So on reddit, someone was discussing how they’d been studying chinese 8 months and still could not understand Peppa Pig. I found the discussion between everyone very interesting. All I really think on my end is like? I also could not understand Peppa Pig (or any shows super well) that early on so it is partly a matter of “you just gotta study chinese for a while.” (The reddit discussion: https://www.reddit.com/r/ChineseLanguage/comments/mk4665/fed_up_with_my_poor_chinese/ )

But also? I am a big believer in “it gets easier the more you practice.” So if you want to do something in a language, try to DO it. And try to keep doing it - because partly yes, you will likely realize you need to learn more words/grammar and the ‘doing’ may just be a catalyst to ‘make you study more’ so that next time you try to DO you know more and its easier. But also, doing it involves building the skills of getting USED to listening, used to recognizing words you studied in a different context, getting used to recognizing and understanding grammar in real time instead of on a delay (like in a textbook when you can slow down and really look at something and figure it out) etc. So partly, how ‘easy’ it is to read or listen has to just do with how often you’ve done it. Have you done it enough that the parts you HAVE studied you can grasp immediately? Or have you done it so little that even things you ‘studied’ don’t click right away - but they might on a rewatch or if you pause and read a subtitle slower, replay a line, etc. The part of the skills you pick up by DOING you really have to just... do to get better.

I found a few responses from people who are years into studying chinese and still find Peppa Pig difficult. And I think in that case, it might be the same situation as my japanese was (studied for 2 years and could still barely read a manga for bare gist). I think partly at that point, lack of understanding has to do with not practicing understanding by Doing. Someone who’s studied a couple years, likely knows a few thousands words+? If they practiced listening or reading regularly for a few months, they’d likely see a TON of improvement. Because they probably ‘learned’ a lot already they just need to develop stronger skills to comprehend what they studied when engaging with shows/audios/novels etc. And if they just ‘wait’ to engage with material until it feels ‘easy’ they may be unnecessarily holding themselves back. Because a major part of ‘why’ it might feel difficult is simply that they don’t practice the skills of USING what they learned. If they practice more, it will get easier. But if they wait to immerse until ‘easy stuff FEELS easy’ when they first try? Then they aren’t challenging themselves nearly as much as they can probably handle...

Like? I’m not that good. I still only kinda comprehend a LOT of things. But that doesn’t stop me from watching chinese dramas I wanna watch in chinese only. And I think a big reason I can comprehend ENOUGH now to follow the plots of shows I wanna watch? Is because when i was 8 months, 10 months, 12 months into learning - i would watch 12 minutes and look up lots of unknown words, or watch an episode and pause to read hard sentences, or make myself watch when i ‘just’ got the gist of an ‘easier’ show and hope that the more i did it the more i’d understand. And somehow, that did work out. (Also it motivated me to keep studying new words in other activities lol, hoping that would make watching easier). Now I’m at a point where i can turn on new shows I want to watch, and watch them, and follow the main gist and pick up some details. Its nice. Its nice and its getting a bit easier each time i do it. And if i had ‘waited’ until ‘easy stuff’ like Peppa Pig was easy? Or until stuff like “Granting You A Dreamlike Life” was easy? I probably would not comprehend this much right now. I tried to watch gyadl like 8 months in and it was pretty rough... even rougher because i only paused a handful of times an episode to make things go faster. But now? When i watch a show ‘about that hard’ that’s mostly slice of life? I can pick up a ton more easily than before. Doing the ‘hard’ thing eventually made it easier. 

So if there’s anything I think about all it, its just... don’t be afraid to challenge yourself sometimes. Sometimes doing hard things makes the ‘easier’ things finally Actually easier. And sometimes waiting until you can ‘understand’ the easy things means just never trying the easy things - when its trying and doing, that will eventually MAKE them doable for you. At least that’s advice to myself ToT I wasted a ton of time in japanese when I didn’t do this, and helped myself a lot in chinese by doing this. I also did it with french even though i wasn’t really aware what i was doing back then.

Konglongmandarin - a site that teaches mandarin utilizing Peppa Pig episodes. Which, while I do not like that cartoon much, I really appreciate the concept behind this site and its lessons. Two Souls in One - a cdrama I’m watching right now, its really good! Its only in chinese subs rn but I imagine youku plans to english sub it since its on youtube. Its magical premise mixed with mundane reality, a lot of fun identity and gender shenanigans. At my comprehension level its reasonably easy to follow - since most of its slice of life or actor-genre lingo. Is there a video of when Bryke mocked Zutara fanart? I've heard about it from multiple people on here but would like to see it myself. They're the worst people ever for doing that.

If you just look up Book 4: Air on youtube, it should be one of the first results, the full title being Avatar Book 4: Air SDCC ^_^ (with subtitles), and, honestly, it starts innocently enough, and seems like it’s light-hearted fun... but then it quickly devolves into zutara-bashing, using fanart sent to them by their fans--most of whom were young girls, especially back in 2008 when atla was new and had a much younger fanbase--and includes this lovely gem:

“Women who think Zuko and Katara should be together will forever have doomed relationships.”

And then, to add insult to injury, after a segment which proves they know nothing about Katara (really? they’d never talk about anything of substance? so i just hallucinated the entirety of their interactions from The Southern Raiders right through to the end of the show, huh???), a screen comes up saying ‘THANKS FOR ALL THE FANART THROUGH THE YEARS’, except ‘ALL’ is replaced, first with ‘SOME’ and then ‘MOST’, clearly taking a potshot at the zutara art they’d been sent, which is like.... incredibly childish and petty, and these are grown ass men getting pissed at teenage and younger children who watched their show and loved it enough to create art of it, only to see it manipulated by the creators (without even an attempt at crediting the artists, from what I can tell) to shit on them for shipping something that wasn’t canon and that Bryke didn’t approve of.

The fact that they had ‘Katara’ say ‘I never should have doubted the will of Mike and Bryan’ is like... the cherry on top of a shit sundae, tbh, and really speaks to how much thought they gave to her agency in her own romantic narrative. (Hint: they didn’t think about it at all. They didn’t care. They wanted to put her with Aang, no matter how little work was done to make her making that choice in the end make sense.)

Anyway, yeah, the whole thing is trash and I have no reason to believe Bryke ever learned to respect their fanbase, especially not given the ‘comic’ Bryan (I think?) drew after book 1 of LoK received criticism, or the fact that he put the book 4: air video up on his tumblr years later, along with a screenshot of the definition of the word ‘joke’, showing he doesn’t understand what was wrong with the video in the first place.

Calling it a ‘joke’ doesn’t change the fact that it was deliberately, needlessly cruel to a huge portion of their fanbase, and extremely disrespectful, not to mention ungrateful.

I used to be really bad at English until I was 18, and probably couldn't have produced a sensible sentence to save my life. That was until during 1 week winter break I marathoned all 3 seasons of Avatar the Last Airbender, in English and without subtitles. We were having tests about irregular verbs in every English class at the time, 10 words and 10 points per test, and before break I got maximum of 4 points per test, usually not even that. After AtLA marathon tho, I started getting 10 points. In every test, without exceptions. My English teacher was bit concerned what had happened to me (I was smug af, because she really was a bad teacher on many levels, and the difference had nothing to do with her teaching). While I obviously aren't in the same level of fluency as in Finnish, my English skills got to a point where I don't need to translate between English and Finnish and I can even fluently think in English.

I'm practically bilingual because of binge watching Avatar the Last Airbender.

the semester just ended for me and i’ve been trying to retain my current knowledge of italian and acquire more of it, so i thought i’d watch the italian dub of my favorite series of all time, avatar: the last airbender (avatar: la leggenda di aang) without subtitles

since i’ve watched the series tons of times (and the beach/la spiaggia almost a hundred times) i pretty much know what’s going on and can focus on how language is used to convey meaning instead of just trying to memorize vocabulary and grammar rules and stuff
