Where to start...

Hello!

Welcome to my Pines family ask blog!

For starters, the owner of this blog is @sanchezsimp. (You guys wanted it, so here it is!)

A few warnings here; this blog will have swears and suggestive themes at times, but that's about it! (Asks with suggestive themes will be tagged as a #suggestive ask !!, swears will not be tagged at all. Block that now if you wish not to see those.)

Onto some information...

• Characters will have different colours to represent who's who (as some other blogs do)

To keep it simple,

Ford is red, like his sweater.

Stan is orange, like... I couldn't find another colour.

Dipper is blue, like his hat, and maybe his vest.

Mabel is pink, like her sweater and headband!

• This'll take place after the show, and after TBoB! Let's say it's another summer, Stan and Ford have been adventuring, Dipper and Mabel have been living their lives, and the twins got permission to be with their grunkles (on the boat) over the summer!

• I might use this blog for some short writing prompts or incorrect quotes as well. Feel free to ask for those!

• If the colour changes in the middle of a sentence, those two characters are speaking in unison.

• Tags will be out of character.

• A little "/" will mean two characters are speaking at the same time! (Not in unison.)

• The owner of this blog is a Rick and Morty fan, so feel free to reference anything from that fandom! (Edit: go to @just-your-average-household! That blog will be affiliated with this one.)

• Other characters may reply to your ask, so if you want just one character specifically to answer, use [To: Dipper] or something like that. (It can be more than one character, and you could also use [To: everyone BUT Dipper], and I'll be just as happy to answer those!)

• I'm not sure if other ask blogs do this, but if not, then I'm starting something. Feel free to ask a character something as another character! For example, you could use orange (Stan) to ask Ford about something. You could also add in [As: Stan] to make it even easier. This could also be multiple characters. (You'll most likely get more personal answers from characters this way.) Try to sound like the character though! If it sounds out of character, I might make my own post with it. Formerly Dorian/dorians/death/defiances it’s still me but I’m now Mars! And it’s Mars/death/defiances!!!!

Anyways, hi, as you know my name is Mars, I’m gender-fluid so she/they/he/it pronouns work for me! Even though I don’t post explicit content on here, but do know that I am an adult, and I’ll sometimes use some strong language (not very often but it’s definitely a distinct possibility).

This is my main blog, I post a lot about Alcibiades and Socrates here, as well as Greek Mythology. My side is: @mars-and-the-theoi while no longer a Hellenic polytheist, I intend to keep the blog up and still reblog helpol related stuff for folks following it. But I may also post Quaker related things as well.

I am disabled, so there may be times where I post about that or times I’m not too terribly active in here because if you know you know. I really enjoy cooking and baking, and I really like spicy foods. I also really enjoy reading (so if you have any book recs send them my way the only genre I’m not too into and am picky about is romance, but I don’t really hate any one genre so!!!) 1 - the character everyone gets wrong

okay im realizing why im bad at these ask games it's because im indecisive. and also i just wanna answer kaeya for most of them. because people get him so wrong so often its painful!!! there's other characters too obviously but outside of our little kaeyablogger bubble it gets SO bad i hate every second of it. the slutification. the completely skewed perception of his personality and inner workings because people only seem to approach him from diluc's point of view and not as an individual character. oh i have already discussed it at length i never shut up about it (reason why this blog was made)

oh man. from the top of my head i can't remember the WORST take ive read but examples of things that have made me block people just because of how bad their takes were include: people who insist kavetham is super toxic, people who wouldn't stop talking about crepus being a bad abusive parent, etc. though to be fair i block people extremely easily if they as much as clog up a character tag with takes i disagree with. i have a feeling that as soon as i click "post" i'll remember all the worst things i have ever read on this webbed site

worst part. hm. generally speaking i think it's the phenomenon that happens in every fandom ever: when people flatten out and twist every character to fit them into their little incorrect quotes cliche dynamics even though whatever is going on in canon is far more interesting. absolutely terrible. no character or relationship is immune to it

25 - common fandom complaint that you're sick of hearing

Once upon a time this was true, back when I wrote requests and head canons I was definitely part of the community. I was included in all the fun and games, people chatted with me regularly, I had loads of friends but the community has changed now, they’re mostly teens and 20 something’s who don’t care about an old dinosaur like me, especially not one who doesn’t create content anymore. I serve no purpose in today’s fandom, I’m just someone for them to block and ignore despite my trying. I feel as though a big part of the problem is that there’s so many minors now and as we all know I am not a minor friendly blog, that doesn’t mean me as a person isn’t friendly towards minors I just don’t want them reading my thirsty ass fics. I appreciate your kind words immensely though and am overjoyed you enjoy my works. I’m not entirely opposed to a tumblr group but wouldn’t have a clue on who to invite, I’m so very ostracized right now I don’t know that anyone would join. I just don’t know, I feel very lost, I still love Bi-Han more than anything but I also don’t want to annoy people further with it. The fact that very few people cared when I said goodbye to the fandom is proof that I just don’t belong anymore. It’s difficult, especially considering I’ve been a fan of the game longer than most of the new fanbase has been alive, but no one cares about that anymore. They’re all just in their little friend bubbles and won’t let anyone new or old in. It sucks but what can you do, like I said I just don’t belong anymore. What’s This Blog About?

Basically this started as a realization that I was saving way too many BSD-related links on the app I use to keep track of all my obsessions, reactions to things, etc. So I figured a Tumblr blog would be the solution, and now this is my archive of things I would usually just save as a link elsewhere (plus some thoughts of my own to spice it up a bit.)

Navigation Stuff

Now how do I tag things for future explorations?

Fandom Tags: #bsd, #bungo stray dogs, #bungou stray dogs (will be updated if I switch/tack on other fandoms)

Character Tags: In general, I just use [acronym] [character’s most used name]. Like #bsd atsushi. Sometimes, I use two like #bsd edgar allan poe/#bsd poe or #bsd gogol/#bsd nikolai gogol but only when I’m not sure what their most used name is. There’s also #bsd characters (for unnamed characters or just incorrect quotes) this one (when there are too many characters to tag) and group specific tags (armed detective agency, port mafia, bsd guild, soukoku, shin soukoku, there’s no naming consistency)

Meta Tags: #bsd musings (for literally anything that contemplates bsd) #bsd theories (for theories, specifically) #character analysis (metas about characters)

Specific Media Tags: #bsd official art, #manga things (anything that features the manga panels) #anime things (anything that features anime screenshots and the like) #light novel things (anything referring to the light novels) #stage play things (anything featuring stuff about the stage play) #bsd fanart, #bsd edits, #bsd gifset, #bsd fanfic. Of course, there will also be tags for the light novels specifically, which is usually just bsd [light novel name], and wan.

Additional Tags: #humor, #alternate universe, #crossover, #random fandom spamdom (generally fandom related either because of my tags or the post’s contents itself) #bsd fandom slander (mostly a subset of humor that lovingly slanders the characters) #not fandom spam (has nothing to do with the fandom specifically) #spitting nonsense (my posts) #rambling in the tags sorry (when I get a bit TOO carried away) #note re-reblogs (currently nonexistent but the time will come...i advise blocking this tag lest you wake up to find 50 posts rereblogged because I didn't want to queue them...)

Spoilers tags will be tagged bsd spoilers (for all of them), manga spoilers/bsd manga spoilers, and anime spoilers/bsd anime spoilers.

In (Rambly) Conclusion

Why am I writing this like a three-point thesis...ah never mind.

And that’s how I sort out my obsession with this stupid show. If any other piece of media seizes me by the throat like BSD has, then I’ll probably start posting about it here (but my fixations are usually short lived and thus onto main sideblog they go).

I tend to...ramble in the tags a lot, which I mildly feel bad for (there’s a reason why I generally just privately save things). So if you’re seeing this because I spam reblogged you and you wondered who in the world was crowding your notifs with tags, I’m sorry. I also try not to crawl out of the tags too much, though, just do so if they don’t fit my rambles (oops....)

I try and lessen the blow by slapping most everything on the queue (but I don’t tag what I queue, let there be CHAOS), so maybe that helps a bit?

That said, I DO love tags, so feel free to spam reblog whatever you want from here and comment-tag as much as you want...I LOVE seeing people say stuff (whether I agree or not, this IS just for fun). I don’t usually use the comment/reply section or the like button because I don’t actually do anything in my main blog (I just work off sideblogs, heh), so I’ll likely abuse the reblog button a lot or just hope my vibes of appreciation are psychically felt.

OH RIGHT!! Asks are always open. Feel free to scream at me about literally anything, ask anything, or share cool links and shiny stuff I can reblog/save (the last one especially because I am a magpie of fandom things). I generally have to be asked things to talk about them, so I do warn you that the right ask can really get me going.

This blog is just another in a long series of incorrect quotes blogs. It exists mostly because I (Mod Hughes) created some stupid edits to cheer up my sister (Mod Oz) when she was feeling rough. She suggested we should share them with others. The end result is this blog, which is probably filled more with private jokes and headcannons than accessible humour. That being said, any laughs you manage to find here are yours to keep.

Content Warnings

This blog is NSFW, because it uses a number of sources like offensive shirt slogans and TFLN which are inherently kind of inappropriate. That being said, all posts that are deemed too offensive or sexual will be tagged as NSFW so you can block that tag if you don't want to see that content. Bad language will not be tagged. You're accessing this content at your own risk, and you are responsible for moderating your own experiences.

Sources

These quotes mostly come from pop culture or common sources. Occasionally, they'll be T-Shirt slogans or another source: this doesn't necessarily mean it's the original source, just the source I found it on. I will try to credit the original source wherever possible, however I have very low spoons and may not always be able to locate the original sources. If I make a mistake, please send me a DM or Ask to let me know, so I can properly credit the sources.

Image Quality

Yes, I know. I've used the same images for multiple posts and the image quality is generally very poor. I have no access to decent screen caps for Psycho Pass, so it's not likely to improve any time soon. Though, if you happen to know of any good sources for screen caps (even if they're not the best quality), please feel free to DM me a link, or send an ask.

Submissions

I regret to inform you we will not be taking submissions. This is because I'm too busy to be going through all the submissions and generally have very low spoons. Frankly, I also find it easier to be responsible for the content posted on this blog when it was something we made ourselves. Well thank you for thinking my blog is good teehee. I think I made a more detailed post before, but here’s some basic advice:

(Btw most of these are for if you want to grow an audience, if it’s just for you then do what you want!)

-pick a theme and stick to it. (Can be multiple themes, but not too many. You can have more than one blog! It’s v hard to get people who are interested in ALL the same things you reblog/post about, so if you’re in six fandoms, maybe make three blogs with two fandoms in each lol. Or six blogs, idk. I’ve never had that problem I’m srry😔)

-be consistent!!! I know I haven’t been taking my own advice on that point recently lol, but try your best to stick to it! I would try to post or reblog every day, but every two days works too. If your content takes more effort (like drawing or writing), obviously your posts can be farther apart. Also: post original content more than you reblog! (But reblogging and supporting other creators is good too)

-be nice!!! Though some people can build an audience around being mean, be nice to your followers. They’re the ones who like you enough to want to keep up to date with you, so show them some gratitude lol

-use a shit ton of tags lmao. Tagging my shit is my least favourite part bc it takes so long lol

-interact with other blogs from the community you’re apart of!!!! It gets u noticed

1. Why did you choose your url?

Storytime: my ex friend was in the kitchen with her mother speaking, i was in the dining room. During their conversation they had called what I heard was my name, I said "Whats up?" And they laughed. As they had not said Evan, they had said Oven. And so the url was chosen (I'm pretty sure I changed it? I don't remember what it used to be)

I have an abandoned one, it was meant for just aesthetic photos for my moodboards or fic inspiration but I saw no point in switching so everything is here in this blog.

How did you get into rp-ing? What advice/tips would you give beginners?

How did I get into rping?

Well, let’s see about eleven, going on twelve years ago now, one of my high school friends started rping Mar’i Grayson on Tumblr and she kind of just straight up told me I was going to write Mar’i’s best friend, Iris West II, for her. I knew nothing about the character or, frankly, the comics side of DC, I’d only ever watched the animated shows, but I did some research and made a blog and ended up having a lot of fun. 15 fandoms and 175 muses later, here we are!

So I guess the short answer to your question is I was bullied into it XD

Tips for beginners…

Have fun. This is literally the most important thing. A lot of people out there seem to want to run their rp blogs like they’re jobs, but they’re not, they’re just a fun hobby, so don’t stress about being fast at replying or pleasing the masses with your writing. It’s about you and what you enjoy. And obviously, your real-life commitments should come first and you don’t need to be sorry about it.

Give OCs a chance. I know it’s easy to feel wary of characters you don’t know or understand, especially ones that may interfere with what you know about the canon of your fandom, but some of the best interactions I’ve had over the years have been with OCs and their Muns are some of my best friends. You don’t have to interact with every OC or even like them, but don’t write them off solely because they are OCs.

Be respectful. Pretty much everyone these days has a rules page on their blog, which can get pretty overwhelming, I know, I often hesitate or talk myself out of sending someone a message because I’m on mobile and I can’t remember some of their rules, but for the most part you’ll do fine if you follow the standard rules of etiquette:

Don’t reblog an rp thread you’re not involved in. You’re welcome to like it or pop into one of the players DMs and let them know you’re enjoying it, but don’t reblog it. It messes up people’s notifications and threads are primarily meant to be enjoyed by the people writing them, not their follower’s followers.

Don’t rp on the bottom of someone else’s post. If you see a photo or an incorrect quote that you draw inspiration from, feel free to write a thread about it, but make a new post. The OP doesn’t really want to get 1000000 notifications of you and your rp partner hijacking their content.

Along the same lines, don’t reblog ask posts. You can, of course, use a meme or ask as an ice breaker or to start a thread, but rather than reblogging the person’s answer and putting your reply on the bottom, most people these days prefer if you make a new text post and just tag the ask it’s based on. It’s neater and prettier and seems to be most people’s preference of late.

Vague posting and callouts are a dick move. If you have a problem with someone, go talk to them about it or block them. Vague posts and callouts make a lot of people uncomfortable, not just the person you’re posting about. And of course, sending hate anons are never okay! If you don’t like someone, don’t talk to them. It’s not that hard.

Don’t lie about your age or write smut with minors. I’m going to be honest, when I first joined this hellsite, no one cared about this. I wrote more smutty rps between the ages of 15 and 18 than I have in the 7 years since, but clearly, now we’re a bit more responsible about this. And, you know, it’s illegal.

Don’t rp as real people. This shouldn’t need to be said, but apparently people still sometimes think this is okay? Even though it’s really weird. You can rp as Batman, but you should never be rping as Taylor Swift because she’s a real human being and can actually sue you for defamation of character and/or identity fraud.

Use a racially appropriate face claim. You don’t have to use the actor cast to play your character in the show or movie or whatever if you don’t want to, heck, you don’t even have to have a face claim at all, but don’t, for example, use a white guy as a face claim for Luke Cage or Lando Calrissian, because that’s whitewashing and racist.

Read people’s pages. This one drives me crazy, if you’re like me, you’ve spent a long time coming up with my rules, character bio, head canons, ect. and you’re proud of them. So is everyone else, so give them a look at least once. Especially head canons and rules. We can all tell if you haven’t read them.

Don’t format your text or blog so that it’s unreadable. A lot of people are a little too invested in “the aesthetic” of their posts or blogs these days, and you know what? Whatever, you do you. But be aware that trends like tiny text, harsh contrasting colours, ect., may limit who can or will interact with you for various reasons. The most common and frankly important being disabilities. The visually impaired and dyslexic communities will struggle to read tiny text, for example. And if someone can���t find your links on your blog because you’ve hidden them in a crazy theme, they’re probably not going to follow you.

Go easy on yourself. Look, no one is a brilliant rper right out of the gate, I personally look back on my own writing an cringe. It can take a little while to find a character’s voice and your writing ability will evolve and change over time. You’re also likely not going to be brilliant at writing every character. That’s fine, you can keep writing them anyways so long as you’re enjoying it.

I was kindly directed towards this post about the Mind Trick (it’s not a Jedi specific ability, so I’m not going to refer to it as the Jedi Mind Trick), because it’s one of my areas of interest and I can think of at least 3 of our stories where we’ve already planned on addressing the topic.

There is…rather a lot of this post that I take issue with. I’m making my own post because it’s a big fandom, everyone gets to view things how they want, don’t harsh the squee, etc etc.

Stuff under the cut, TRIGGER WARNINGS for: mind fuckery, gaslighting, victim blaming, and mention of various mental illnesses.

To start: mind fuckery is bad. I have a lot of personal experience with gaslighting, so I get twitchy about the notion of someone messing with my head. When I say gaslighting here, I mean both the vernacular (someone lying to fuck with a target) and the technical sense (from Wikipedia: “a form of manipulation that seeks to sow seeds of doubt in a targeted individual or in members of a targeted group, hoping to make them question their own memory, perception, and sanity. Using persistent denial, misdirection, contradiction, and lying, it attempts to destabilize the target and delegitimize the target’s belief”). So the possibility of someone coming in and forcibly changing my perceptions and memories is Very Not Cool. I think it’s an ability that canon does use a bit too casually for my own preferences, but the same could be said about how quick everyone is to pull out blasters.

Calling it ‘evil,’ though, goes way too far. As with many things, it’s neither good nor bad, it’s about how it’s used. So what good uses are there, you might ask?

Well, just off the cuff, we’ve got:

Breaking gaslighting

assisting with hallucinations and compulsive behavior

assisting with phobias

basically all the things cognitive behavioral therapy is useful for, now with a Force-assisted oomph

treating addictions

treating trauma, including PTSD

assisting with meditation and mindfulness

aiding memorization and learning

non-violent means to defuse potentially violent situations

Now, that last one in particular is questionable, and would vary as appropriate from situation to situation. Which is a greater evil, a security guard shooting and presumably killing a bank robber that could kill lots of people, or a Jedi using the Mind Trick to get them to surrender to authorities? People will probably give you different answers, but that’s the point about how this is tricky. It also doesn’t even get into ‘who decides how ethical a thing is’ and fears of authoritarian regimes, which I’m just not in the mood to tackle right now.

Moving on, we’ve got the OP’s interpretation of sources.

I. Well. Look, EU stuff is of questionable quality and level of canon in the first place. Secondly, there’s that weird split in both fandom and creators of canon where Jedi and Sith tend to be viewed as all good or all bad, not organizations what are fucked up and in need of reform. Third, I don’t have the texts they’re quoting so I can’t give you context, meanwhile it’s first person which is often used as an authorial mechanism to give unreliable narration and so immediately makes me hesitate to accept them whole-heartedly.

With all that in mind, I have a REALLY different interpretation than OP.

Jedi Order does not disclose their power, people don’t know how the Force works. All they know is that Jedi are good. That’s it.

Totally false. Both Jabba and Watto knew about the Mind Trick when it was being used on them. These are folks from Outer Rim areas – the boonies, where Republic education would not be standardized and taught – neither of them seems to be the type to either have extensive knowledge of fairy tales about Jedi abilities, nor a background in historical trivia. When Jabba declares he’s immune to Jedi mind tricks, no one around him acts confused or surprised – there’s no question what this is. Watto – a former soldier who now owns a junk shop – also knew the handwave was meant to indicate something, like he knew exactly what it would convey. So I’m pretty sure this means it’s common knowledge.

No, wait, it’s demonstrated in the next quote as to be known:

referred to by Jedi as affect mind and alter mind, but popularly known as Jedi mind tricks

JEDI refer to this ability as Affect Mind. OTHERS call it Jedi mind tricks. That doesn’t mean Sith, that means the general populace.

there are rumors but the victims are usually dismissed (or end up with brain damage) because they didn’t understand what happened to them and because this power was usually performed on “less influential” members of the Republic

Not backed up by their own data. The quote mentions “a relatively innocent subject” but there’s nothing that extrapolates to mean it’s more often used on the poor/disadvantaged. It IS typical Jedi sanctimoniousness, but it’s not about targeting more vulnerable beings.

The brain damage comment is also inaccurate for reasons I personally find frustrating. The quote is “the power can easily cause permanent damage”.

That doesn’t mean brain damage. There are plenty of ways to fuck with someone and ruin them without brain damage. IF the Mind Trick is extreme and unlimited in power, then you can make someone: perpetually anxious/depressed; so self-effacing as to never stand up for themselves; vulnerable to specific commands; all sorts of other nasty things.

That goes back to the whole ‘personal experience with gaslighting,’ and I need to point out that any of this can be done with time, patience, and willingness to fuck with someone. You don’t need the Force to do it. The Force is basically a shortcut, but vilifying the Mind Trick right off the bat because it messes with someone’s head and that’s something we norms can’t do is erroneous.

And the Jedi don’t see to care because they see their victims as weak-minded (like they had it coming).

That’s a deliberate spin on the text. Looks like I’m quoting the whole thing because I can’t pick out just one bit:

“Weak-minded” isn’t victim bashing, it’s back to sanctimoniousness. The narrator is describing who it can affect. It’s the exact same phrasing that was used in the Original Trilogy when we first encountered it. It’s not “those who are affected by the Mind Trick are weak willed and deserve it,” it’s “the Mind Trick only works on those with weak wills, and if someone isn’t weak willed then we’re just standing there waving a hand and talking like an idiot.” Which ALSO ignores that there are entire species who are resistant/immune to the Mind Trick and mental influences, and they can’t all be ‘strong-willed’ so that means the comment is bullshit anyways. It’s shorthand for “so this works on some people, but if they’re already on alert or tend to be stubborn you’re shit out of luck when it comes to making friends and influencing people even with your space magic.”

The “will of the Force” bullshit is more of the same. It’s a sanctimonious way of saying “I got lucky on the genetic lottery,” not “It’s the will of the Force I have this power and it’s the will of the Force this weak-minded being is here therefore it’s the will of the I remove their agency and do what I want to their mind.” Yes, some assholes are going to use that as an excuse for their behavior. Assholes are always going to find some excuse for their behavior, be it religion, substances, background, or whatever else might be in reach.

On top of all this, the Mind Trick is hardly a Jedi specific tool. In Rebels the Inquisitors use it. I want to say that Palpatine used it too but I can’t find anything convenient on Wookieepedia and I’m sorry, I’m not rewatching six movies and Clone Wars just to prove a point. Meanwhile, Mother Talzin DID visibly use it to manipulate both Asajj Ventress and Savage, so Nightsisters are obviously familiar with it. There’s no reason other Force users couldn’t do the same, it’s just that Jedi are the predominant group of such in the Republic.

In sum, the Mind Trick is a dick move, that post presumes a lot of incorrect things, and it really shouldn’t be called the JEDI Mind trick.

Finally, in criticism of the Jedi Order: Qui-Gon is so casual about his use in TPM, it makes me twitch. I love the guy, massive faults and all, but it often feels like this is the first tool he reaches for, not the last one. I get that this is a time-critical mission with an entire city going into prison camps, and those peoples’ fates rest on him getting shit done fast. I get that he has to weigh the Chancellor’s request vs planetary needs vs individual autonomy vs the lives of those he’s responsible for. (It’s still most often a dick move.) Meanwhile Obi-Wan’s…THING in Attack of the Clones with the deathstick dealer – I will never understand it, and I usually headcanon it as something other than what we literally see because WHAT EVEN you do not fuck with someone’s head like that. The casual “let’s raid Cad Bane’s mind!” thing in TCW is several massive types of awful. Given these charming examples (and there are others, but those are the ones I immediately think of), it’s no wonder that the Order has a reputation.
