btw I ask for prayers for when I speak in my class that since I am in a class that is religiously diverse and have zero desire to with hold my beliefs, that 1.) I don't say something in a way that horribly offends someone (I prefer to be gentle when in religious discussion) 2.) That when I do speak about the topic that the 'baby christian' boy in my class is able to understand me & that if I ever try to help him learn that I don't come across as if I am dismissing him (I am worried that I made him feel stupid or ganged-up on yesterday and hope that I did not) and that 3.) I see a lot of people who are like “But where’s the proof he didn’t do it?” I don’t know if they’re being obtuse or if it’s a genuine question.

But the quick and dirty explanation is that you can’t prove a negative. It’s why the onus is on the accusers to prove something DID happen. It’s why in law, generally, no one is proven innocent; they’re found not guilty. There is a presumption of innocence. The absence of evidence isn’t evidence of absence. Given that, we have to remember that the accusations lack a: victim(s), date, and a specific wrongdoing.

The story went from rape, to SA, to this nebulous idea of “abuse.” The timeframe spans like nine months, several years ago. All accusers eventually specified that PHW didn’t do anything to them specifically, but to “others.” The victims are unnamed and they do not have a number of victims.

They spent more time and effort assasinating his character than providing evidence or having a cohesive story.

How can anyone reasonably be asked to defend against basically nothing? Please try accounting for your exact whereabouts, everyone you were in contact with, and your every action from several years ago and spanning 9 months; all for a crime they can’t specify you did.

I bet you couldn’t even account for the entirety of last week.

Crimes have specific definitions for a reason. No one should go to jail based on “bad vibes” or “trust me bro, something definitely criminal happened.” The only defense people have for the accusers’ lack of evidence or specifics is “why would they lie?” As if people aren’t complicated.

The rate of false accusations is low, but it’s not zero.

“Why would they lie?” also depends on the presumption that the accusers are reasonable and of sound mind. I don’t know these people, one of them admits severe mental health issues and drug use. One of them posted a GoFundMe and has an OnlyFans. This information was voluntarily posted on a public forum. THEY told us this, no one dug it up from private records or spied on them.

Drug use and money, boom. Two possible motivations with circumstantial evidence.

Whether or not anyone wants to admit it, there’s always the possibility of unreasonable or malicious motivation. We shouldn’t PRESUME these motivations, but it’s WHY we need an impartial court to go over the evidence.

The accusers are essentially asking for infinite “bites at the apple” in terms of their stories. If he did have proof he was out of the country during months 123, then they’ll say “well then it must have happened at month 4.”

NO. Either the wrongdoing happened at a specific time or it didn’t. There are no floating dates in law.

No one is asking for the longitude and latitude, the timing down to the second, and what star sign it happened under, but a timeframe spanning months that happened years ago is unreasonable to defend against.

Unnamed victims no one can question or get their version of events is unreasonable to defend against.

Asking to prove an undefined crime didn’t happen is unreasonable to defend against.

TeamE83Liz's Behavior Is Concerning

One of the more mentally unstable When Calls The Heart fans, TeamE83Liz (who's deleted and created so many new accounts by this point she's had almost a dozen different names) is giving off some real serial killer vibes. I'm sorry if that sounds hyperbolic or extreme, but I can't think of any other way to describe this.

I've been informed that she's made two new Instagram accounts (although one of them appears to have been deleted already) and was trying to pretend to be someone else, but kept leaving the same creepy, stalkerish comments on Erin Krakow's profile (vaguely calling her a whore, saying she's going to hell for being in a relationship with Ben, getting really angry any time Erin posted photos of herself with friends etc.) that several people could tell right away it was her.

I really don't understand this mindset. TeamE83Liz is still frothing at the mouth because people on Twitter are saying mean things about the fictional character Elizabeth, but doesn't at all see a problem with saying reprehensible stuff about real people and leaving hateful comments on their social media pages. 

Also, this "Erin laughed at a Starbucks employee for misspelling her name" is something I can't find. She hasn't touched Twitter in a long time and I checked her latest Instagram posts and didn't see this. If someone can show me what this is referencing I would appreciate it. I have a feeling this is something buried in an Instagram post from several years ago and was lighthearted and not anything malicious.

This is something I've noticed every time TeamE83Liz deletes one of her accounts and makes a new one with a new name. She gets butthurt that she doesn't have a lot of followers. She is never able to make the connection that each time she deletes her accounts the followers she has are not going to automatically follow the next one she makes. I don't know if this is tech illiteracy or Main Character Syndrome or if she's just stupid.

More whining about being blocked, zero reflection on what she does to cause people to block her.

This woman, who it sounds like is hurtling towards middle age, spends a solid 3 months out of the year sick at the thought of adults who have their lives together and are productive members of society being in a relationship and building families.

Liz, if you ever end up reading this:

There is nothing wrong with being single if that's what someone wants. You can live a healthy and fulfilling life without relationships. In fact, statistically it's healthier for women to be single then married to men. But if you, Liz, haven't made this choice and are single because no one wants to be with you, you really need to reflect on how you act and present yourself to other people and what it is you do that drives people away. Based on all the social media posts TeamE83Liz has made, it looks like she's a dangerous, unhinged, obsessed fanatic that can't separate reality and fiction wrapped up in a victim complex.

Two actors you've never met or spoken to being in a relationship who might, at some point in the future, get married and have kids shouldn't affect ANYONE'S life. How on earth does the happiness of two people that I hope you never meet "ruin" your life? You are not the main character of the universe. You, like everyone else in the world, are of no importance to people you have never met. 

TeamE83Liz appears to have moved on from calling Ben "him" to "that thing". I wasn't kidding when I said she has serial killer vibes.

Based on nothing, she's convinced herself that the character's Elizabeth and Lucas were broken up because of Erin. Just ignoring the showrunner and producer and writers.

More dehumanizing language against one of the actors. I really hope whoever works behind the scenes of When Calls The Heart keeps track of lunatics like this and finds a way to keep them from going to meet and greets and stuff like that. I hope there's some kind of safety protocol in place.

Maybe, just maybe, there was less kissing this season because they were going to break up the characters. No, that can't be it. It's because Erin went to Italy with Ben (Liz is really obsessed with this dumb Italy trip the cast took).

SaL anon here bestie and sorry I missed our usual good luck wishes last night, work is kicking my ass this week and since there's a conference till Friday I'm working night's as well. A shame too because it wouldn't have been necessary (love when that happens) since it was soooo good!! Yes there was way more Owen and Nazi's than I'd like but at least I enjoyed watching the agent in charge barely managing not to roll her eyes whenever he spoke. Even his talk with Tommy was fun (not getting over

the "you weren't in it" line anytime soon, the delivery was perfect 😆😆😆). In fact the entire Tommy storyline us such a delight, loved watching her flounder with Trevor while her work kids giggles in the ambulance. And I cackled out loud at the dinner when Evie and Izzy introduced themselves, it had such The Shining vibes, intentional or not. On a side note who does Gina Torres's hair?? Like mostly we see a work bun but when they go all out with the styling it's a damn masterpiece, nobody should look that good with all their hair on one side of their head). 

And of course the Tarlos this episode was perfect. I'm so relieved they didn't turn Iris into an obstacle, it was looking grim for a sec. But all the Tarlos scenes were so sweet and loving, even when they were meant to be funny. I won't say too much cause I feel like we can get a song out of this  this episode. But i'm looking forward to next week (with more Paul, Marjan, and Mateo please)!!

Hi my friend! I’m glad to hear from you, but sorry things are so busy right now! I had a rough week too with me and my mom both having our vehicles out of order at the same time and a boss that was difficult about letting me work from home a few times 🙄. ANYWAY, I hope you’re free to relax soon!

I know I bitch about Owen but I do like him when they let him focus on the job and his team and his scenes with Tommy are always so good! Their whole conversation this episode had me laughing, especially her face when she tells him he’s not in the dream 🤣 And the FBI agent was all of us rolling our eyes, but that scene was also pretty funny with him doing all that work and then not turning the tracker on. Unfortunately that’s about the only good thing to come out of this arc because so far I’m just bored with it. I do not care about this biker gang at all. Zero percent interested in this storyline. Damian Darhk hangs at a white supremist bar? Color me shocked 🙄

I do agree that Tommy’s storyline is an absolute delight so far! Part of that is because I really enjoy D.B Woodside, but I’m enjoying the character, he and Gina have some great chemistry, and I’m loving Nancy’s take on the whole thing. Breanna has SUCH good delivery and she plays so well off Gina and Ronen. And Gina’s hair is always stunning and I love that they find new ways to do it, since most shows, especially procedurals with the characters in uniform a lot of the time, typically pick one, maybe two styles if they do a “work” style and “home” style, (as you can see with Grace and Nancy) and that’s it unless there is a fancy event and then you get one episode with “fancy” style. But Tommy has had a lot of different looks and I love that we get to see that!

I’m also really enjoying what they’re doing with Iris. Even with all the (easily avoidable) plotholes this “new” backstory created, I think what we are going to ultimately get out of it is going to be worth it (insert *don’t blow this for us.gif* here). I really enjoyed how Carlos made sure to remind TK before Iris arrived that she’s blunt but not malicious, and that TK really takes that to heart and when he’s spiraling about what she said, it never comes up or is played that she said something to upset TK, but that she inadvertently hit a nerve. And out of that, we get such a good Tarlos scene that really shows their growth in being vulnerable with each other and committing to talking things out. Love that for them and for us! Also, can we talk about the CONSTANT soft touches because they are killing me with the gentle, casual intimacy and domesticity. Carlos calling TK “dude”? TK affectionately telling Carlos to shut up while blushing and rolling his eyes fondly? I’m just watching all their scenes like *chinhands* 😍 I’m looking forward to getting hit with the angst and tension next week, and I can’t wait to see what song you come up with for this week. It’s been AGES since we had something to work with!

If there is one complaint it’s that, as you mentioned, there is NOT ENOUGH Marjan, Mateo, and Paul. We’ve got three big storylines going into the opening of the season, Owen, Tommy, and Carlos. Judd is mixed into Owen’s and to some extent Tommy’s storyline, Grace and Nancy (and TK a tiny bit) are involved in Tommy’s storyline right now, and Carlos’ storyline is of course involving TK and Iris and may ultimately involve a little Owen and/or Judd if TK needs someone to talk to, plus we know TK helps Gabriel out. Soooo, where does that leave our other three “main” characters? It seems like if the storyline isn’t about them personally, they aren’t involved and I haaaaate that!! I want to know more about them, yes, and I WANT them to have their own personal storylines too, but they should get to be involved in the other character’s storylines outside of just work as well! We KNOW they have 126 hangs so they are all supposed to be super close, but I feel like we just don’t see that with them being as involved in the storylines outside of the firehouse. Which is one of the reasons I’m irritated at Owen having a storyline outside the firehouse because the other two main storylines right now are outside the firehouse and especially since it’s the start of the whole season, it would be nice if his storyline involved the 126 and let us see more of the crew, OR that Owen’s storyline was pushed to later in the season and we got someone else having a storyline focus, or just the 2 storylines right now, and more emergencies. This episode only had the one, ONE emergency this episode, and a blip of Grace being on the phone. It’s like...the opposite problem OG is having right now where they have so little going on for the main characters that the emergencies are taking up too much time (while still not showing us the team doing work, just looooong ass set-ups and focus on the guest character’s for the emergency), while LS has so much going on for the characters that there isn’t time for emergencies. Which circles back to not seeing Paul, Marjan, and Mateo as much because we mostly see them on calls when the episode’s storyline isn’t directly about them. It’s irritating that this is STILL an issue for these three characters in particular this many seasons in, but I do know they have said we ARE getting some central episodes for those three at some point, so fingers crossed we get more of them sooner rather than later. And any time we want to work them more into the personal scenes for other characters that would be great! Why don’t we see TK and Paul and Carlos going out? When can we get “danger magnets” TK and Marjan trying to one-up each other during a group night out? Why couldn’t Owen’s big storyline involve Mateo? Or Paul or Marjan? They are SUCH interesting characters and I NEED more of them! And Owen is always at his best when he’s in Good Dad Mode, or Competent Captain Mode, instead of Main Character Who Can Do Everything Syndrome Mode.

ANYWAY, I’m enjoying the season so far, I actually laughed out loud MULTIPLE times last night watching this episode, and I’m ready to enjoy the wild ride!

OUAT Thoughts Pt.66--Episodes 3-4

I have watched through S7E4; spoilers DNI. Also, spoiler warning for anyone further behind than I am.

—What is Ella’s problem? She stands in front of Tiana, looking a full ten years older than her, and basically blames her for not saving her father’s life? From the looks of it, Tiana was probably, Idk, a chilD?!!!?! How was she supposed to do anything?

—I don’t really like Ella too much. She’s a bit abrasive.

—I kinda like Lucy, but the actress is *no offense, cause I realize she’s just a kid* not very good. She over-delivers most of her lines.

—Okay I loved seeing Rumple happy and domestic, but the tradeoff sucked. Did they really have to make us and Rumple watch her age and die while he stayed the same age?

—*But* it is nice to see that Gideon is doing well. He’s a scholar and you know what, I bet his wearing white now is on purpose. He’s a good man and they want us to know it.

—Also, he’s a good kind of unassumingly handsome. He’s cute, but not ostentatiously so. Idk, I think I forgot the word I thought was spot-on, but it was a good-ass word. Anyway, Gideon’s been handsome since he first showed up, and he’s still handsome now.

—I could go in-depth-ish about how Naveen is one of the two best Disney princes/adjacent, and how much I love his relationship with Tiana, but I haven’t seen a hide nor a hair of him, so I’m going to assume he won’t show up unless he does. Going forward with that knowledge, I think Tiana and Hook would go nicely together. They could go along with the best part of Tiana/Naveen, which is the way they both shape each other into better versions of themselves.

—Also, I’m now 89% sure Alice is Hook’s daughter. Which makes them playing chess together in the hospital waiting room excredibly sad.

—I’m a bit confused about the timeline of that stuff from the tail end of season 6 where Lucy and Henry were in the Enchanted Forest? If that was before Hyperion Heights, Lucy knowing the town is cursed doesn’t make sense, unless maybe Tiger Lily enchanted her to keep her awake. If it’s after Hyperion Heights, it still doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, because Tiger Lily said she would be reunited with her family again in an ominous way that sounds like “sorry, kid, but you only get to see your dad when your family is cursed.” So…*shrugs*

—ALICE IS A LESBIAN!!!! Y’all I am just over the moon! She is a plaid-wearing, earring-having, ripped-tights-owning, Wonderland-quoting, completely batsh*t crazy lesbian and that is a solid YES.

—Also, her comment to Rumple when he appeared in the Cinderella world was quite amusing. Yeah, sweetheart, I also get the 💖💜💙 vibe from him, but that prince is way too young. And come on, Rumple would score a king.

—Speaking of the vibe, I love the clothes he wears in Hyperion Heights for only solidifying it. And yes, this is just an excuse for me to point out that, at least once within these two episodes, Rumple has low-key cuffed his jeans again. (Bi-cuffing almost makes me want to own a pair of jeans, but even Rumple isn’t quite enough to convince me. My skin can’t breathe under those things.)

—OOOO, and he wore camo! Iconic!

—Wait, what was Alice doing in the Cinderella world to begin with? Was she looking for Henry for some malicious purpose, or was she looking for Hook?

—Who’s that weird-ass lady locked in the tower? I have no cause to take her seriously, because A) I know nothing about her that should make me take her seriously, and B) she has shown no efforts in the present towards the same. Just some weird cryptic nonsense.

—I need some backstory for Tiana. I do not understand how her original story translates to being in a resistance group against Lady Tremaine. It makes zero sense, and it’s bothering me. If they’re just slapping her name on some lady who has no narrative or spiritual resemblance to Tiana, I’m gonna be annoyed.

—Can’t wait for Dr. Facilier to show up! Top three animated Disney villains for sure.

—Unfortunately, all signs point to Rumple dying at the end of the show. I’m grumpy about it. Hey, maybe they’ll up the ante and the the last scene will be all my beloved characters chilling in the afterlife together. (If they all die together, yes it’s sad, but it’s better than just some of them dying.)

—Alice was chasing a white bunny! Gosh, I hope she wasn’t chasing it for nefarious purposes, because I love her but bunny peril is the line.

—Regina dispensing motherly advice to Henry without even knowing who he is stings me. Also, she’s still v pretty.

—Really I am not getting over Alice. I refuse. This is the best thing to happen to me ever. Alice in Wonderland is among my favoritest books and just. Her. Being a lesbian. If nothing else comes of this season, that alone is enough.

—I wonder if who her mom is will ever be important. The limb I’m climbing out on here is that her mother was from Wonderland, because it doesn’t make much sense for her to be *Alice* if she isn’t connected to Wonderland somehow.

—It’s pretty out of character for Henry to be a coward. And yk, he has the Heart of the Truest Believer, so him being so fricking stubborn about believing in the curse.

—Rumple’s good-guy fairytale clothes were so pretty. 10/10.

—Ew, a spooky spooky cemetery! Fake graves!

—It took four episodes but he said it! Rumple said “dearie!” And it was so worth the wait. I’m glad he’s awake now, because it’s much more fun when he is.

thank you so much for you posts on guts assaulting casca bc quite frankly... the way the fandom frames it rather lead me to overlook it and have an uncomplicated relationship with him, all the while hating what griffith did during the eclipse. (in your opinion, what makes the fandom like this?)

Thank you for sending this, I'm really happy my posts inspired you to rethink your initial takeaway from Berserk and the fandom! lol I hope that didn't ruin the experience for you or make you dislike a character you used to love or anything though, imo the way both the Eclipse and Guts assaulting Casca are written reflects more on the writing than on Guts or Griffith as characters.

Man though there are so many reasons for this imo.

I mean for starters, there's the fact that certain takes kind of have a chokehold on fandom, like the classic "Griffith was an evil unfeeling sociopath all along and here's a nonsensical explanation for every single one of his actions that seems to demonstrate otherwise" lol. I avoid the rest of fandom as much as I can and I still see a lot of instances where someone will, say, go to the Berserk reddit or Skull Knight like, "hey I don't understand xyz moment, if Griffith doesn't care why did this happen?" and get the rote "because he's a control freak who couldn't stand seeing his friends living their own lives" answer, or whatever lol. These fans shut down discussion as often as they can and most fans just accept those answers because they don't care enough to think about it themselves, or they don't have the tools to analyse the story and come to their own conclusions because critical thinking is a learned skill that many people were never really taught.

So along with Griffith being evil all along, you have fans who might be like, "hey, it's kinda fucked up that Guts tried to rape Casca right, maybe I don't want them to get together," and get responses like "no you see he was possessed at the time, it's not his fault it was the beast of darkness who is a random evil malicious entity and not a symbolic representation of Guts' dark side at all."

As for why fans are so eager to come up with these explanations and believe them, I mean to be fair for a lot of people it's just easier to enjoy a story if the protagonist is likeable and sympathetic and not an attempted rapist lol. I can understand the urge to downplay Guts' actions there or find an alternative explanation for them, because to do otherwise would reduce their enjoyment of the story. I think this urge can be very bad when it leads to people using actual rape apologist rhetoric, like "Guts stopped before he got his dick in so it's not that bad and he should be forgiven" or whatever, but when it leads to arguing that he was actually possessed then it's like... whatever lol. You're wrong, you're misunderstanding the story entirely, but at least you're happy I guess, good for you. (yk assuming they're not being an asshole to other fans who disagree, which lbr is a pretty unlikely assumption in this fandom, but you know what I mean.)

That said there are a lot of terrible Berserk fans out there who make it pretty obvious that their bad takes are rooted in offensive misogynist and homophobic beliefs. I mean a common nickname for Griffith in this fandom involves a homophobic slur, so that should tell you the kind of people I'm talking about here. Those are the ones who I very much think hate Griffith from the start because he's got serious gay vibes, and go out of their way to find reasons to justify their hate and ignore every nuance in his character arc, while excusing Guts at every possible turn because he's the manly "hetero" protagonist they wanna be.

And yk, there are just a lot of people in general who don't like moral greys, who don't like nuance in fiction, and who want to flatten as much as they can to "good" or "bad." So Guts is "good" and therefore every bad thing he does has to be explained away and ignored. Griffith is "bad" so every good thing he does also has to be explained away and ignored.

BUT to be fair and well-rounded here, it's not all the fault of fandom. The story itself makes it easy to do this. I mean the eclipse rape was 2 chapters long, it took away Casca as a character for 20 years, it made the protagonist very angry, it was commiteed by a demon who has pointedly shown no remorse, and it was basically used as motivation for a whole revenge plot.

Conversely Guts assaulting Casca was a few pages, most of which was shown in symbolic imagery in Guts' head, Guts feels bad about it, and - and this is something I absolutely hate about Berserk lol - it's had zero negative consequences, at least so far, and several positive results. It's the inciting incident for Guts realizing he needs a babysitter and has to work on being less shitty, and Casca was already afraid of him so that didn't even change for the worse. Guts sexually assaulting Casca literally had a positive impact on the narrative. This makes it a lot easier to downplay how utterly shitty it was, and this is a major problem with the story.

And like the story itself doesn't condemn Guts for the assault very harshly despite being very clear about Guts being the one responsible. This is another thing that can create cognitive dissonance for fans and require explaining away - the attempted rape was a Bad Thing but since the story itself kind of downplays it that must mean that Guts isn't actually at fault, because if he was surely it would be a whole big thing, and not one scene that has never been brought up again.

So yeah, idk, basically I think there are a bunch of reasons for the fanbase's reactions to Guts and Griffith sexually assaulting Casca, and some of them are understandable and some of them are shitty. Thanks for the ask!

Minho’s usual hair-trigger and Newt’s ability to be cruel when he’s scared is a thing I think about a lot. It wasn’t shown in the movies at all, but this dynamic was incredibly interesting to me. 

Anyway, the vibe is effectively awful. The end.] 

And Newt? Of all of the people in all of the world, Newt had the least ground to be yelling at Minho. Zero. Less than zero. He felt the earth beneath his feet give way and eat up the hypocritical, terrible, unyieldingly cruel words that were rising in him. 

As if he deserved to even consider giving Minho the what-for about nearly dying in the Maze under suspicious circumstances.

Newt just wished that he could take away all the things he’d already said. 

Would probably give his last breath for it.

The irony was not lost.

“Yo-you think I was late on purpose? Like I went looking for a Griever to-,” Minho sucked in a breath, his face twisting into something bitter and sad. “What, you thought I was gonna try to make my own way out?” 

His voice rose until he was shouting, fists clenched and Newt thought he could hear teeth grinding in time with Minho’s flexing jaw as he gave Newt a dark look.

Newt had said those exact words to Minho as he lay crumpled in the middle of the Maze, half-delirious from pain and failure.

Everything was quiet, especially the boys who found themselves in the Homestead with them and were frozen by the awkward, terrible conversation. It was more like a train wreck than a conversation, honestly, with the way they all gawked and rubber-necked at the rising voices.

It wasn’t common, Newt and Minho arguing. Most disagreements between them were a flash in the pan, just minor bouts of friction that were resolved with a wee bit of listening and understanding.

Minho didn’t believe in wasting energy on carrying it out and Newt never had the energy to begin with, so they fixed the problem and moved on. Usually.

This problem? This one had been carried between them since…well, since.

None of the boys in the room truly knew anything about Newt’s moment of despair. As far as they were concerned, he was a victim of a malfunctioning Griever that only tried to gore him rather than feast on him. It was easy to accept.

They’d witnessed Grievers acting strangely before, through the windows into the Maze; odd twitching, pacing, and garbled, glitching screeching echoing through the corridors, their weapons dragging behind them. They were machines, after all, so why wouldn’t they malfunction every now and then?

It was easier to accept system failure over malicious self-sabotage.

It was definitely easier to accept over the reality; the person who greeted every Greenie with a crooked smile, a handshake, and weirdly comforting realism about their new situation had been hopeless the entire time. 

If you can’t believe Newt, who can you believe?

“No,” Newt bit out. He leaned back against the furthest wall, crossing his arms around himself, everything in him tense. His hands trembled. His head hurt. He hated everything about this conversation, this rickety building, this horrible prison.

He looked Minho straight in the eyes and ignored the churning in his gut. 

“I didn’t fucking say that. Don’t put words in my mouth, Minho.”

“Then what did you say? Hm? Something like ‘are you just throwing yourself at them?’” Minho spit back, affecting Newt’s accent mockingly. “Or maybe, ‘think about the rest of us before you get yourself dead.’”

Newt flinched and dropped his eyes from Minho’s, shame filling him, flushing over his skin, red burning all over him. He pushed off the wall, his own fists clenched at his side, a mirror to Minho’s posture.

“Oh, what about ‘if you wanted out so bad, you coulda said so!’” Minho continued, stepping forward into Newt’s space, aggressive and it took everything in the blond not to flinch again.

His friend, the closest friend he can ever remember having, looked ready to throw a punch, his arm twitching and his fist flexing with pent up energy Newt knew was meant for him.

Newt looked him in the eye and reached out, slow and tentative.

“Minho-,“ he started, but was cut off by a slap to his hand and his friend roughly shoving his chest.

“No, fuck you,” Minho scowled, shoving again, the momentum throwing Newt against the wall.

If the other boys had been concerned about their disagreement before, they were fully anxious that the two were looking like they were going to come to actual blows. A couple had stopped pretending that they weren’t listening and were instead watching closely for the moment they’d have to jump in and hold someone back.

“Of the two of us, I’m not the shuck coward, Newt.”

Minho's voice was colored by anger, frustration. Newt deserved it. It was understandable, considering, and he deserved to be face to face with the consequences of the words he screamed at Minho when he collapsed after squeezing through the closing Doors. He deserved all the glaring and shoving and probably even a fist to the face for insinuating Minho was anything but ready to fight to get out of this awful prison.

“I don’t let this shit kill me inside like you did.”

It was the pity, the sorrow twisted by resentment that made Newt's limbs shake and bile rise in his throat. He couldn't stomach it, just like he couldn't stomach the stale stench of the Maze or the claustrophobic, crushing sensation that filled his bones when he saw the Walls every morning. Just like he couldn't fucking stand the sad eyes and eagerly helpful hands that surrounded him as he learned to walk again, learned to live again.

Pity was a reminder that he'd failed. Pity was a weight around his shoulders, tying him to the place that suffocated everything inside of him. Pity filled him up with the sickly hollow hopelessness and left no room for the second life Newt was supposed to be living.

But he couldn't die here, couldn't escape no matter how hard he tried. He'd accepted this the same day Minho dragged his dead weight through the corridors while Newt screamed in pain and desperation to be left alone.

He'd accepted it again every time he watched the Runners leave in the early light.

“I wouldn’t leave you, Newt,” Minho whispered. It was a harsh, tired, sad sound. His shoulders lost their tension, his body folding in on itself. “I couldn’t leave you.”

Ok so...I may have a hot take that I know someone is going to fight me on.

I don't think Colin deserves as much hate as he was getting. Skylar has every right to be upset at him, however I think the root of their conflict is miscommunication. If he really wanted to break up with Sky he could've just said so, but he didn't want to deal with the emotional mess that follows after that. So he tried to be vague about it and hoping that she would take a hint. Of course that didn't end well, and Colin took the biggest L for that one. 

Right after the episode where Skylar caught Colin with Ruby, I was hoping that there was just a misunderstanding that will eventually be cleared up. Throughout the whole thing, the way Colin spoke to Ruby is so casual, I didn't think he was flirting with her at all. Not seeing the vibe here. So I thought he accepted Ruby's invitation as a friendly hangout and didn't feel the need to bring up that he already had a girlfriend. (Apparently I'm at that old age when I didn't know that "kickin' it" means making out. Someone had to point that out to me.) 

And even if he was interested in Ruby, does it really count as cheating if he thought he already broke off with Skylar? Honestly, I don't think Colin would be THAT stupid to hook up with another girl if he knew his girlfriend is going to show up at the exact same time and place.

Also Colin didn't get a chance to apologize but then again, what else can he say? It’s likely he's going to make excuses anyway but at least Skylar should make it clear that it's over between them. Say it directly to his face, unlike what he did before. “Y’know what, Colin? You’re right. We should just keep things ‘chill’. And by ‘chill’, I mean we’re done.” 

Now I get that he has to suffer for a bit, but I kinda feel sorry for him? Like, did everyone at school heard what a jerk he was and avoided him, so he ends up alone with zero friends? Gosh, I hope not.

TLDR: Colin did one thing wrong but that doesn't make him the worst person on the show. What he did was a mistake and there was no malicious intent behind it.

JARCHIE!!! I missed their interactions so much... like honestly in S4 they barely spoke.  I’m loving the “roommates” dynamic.

Thoughts on this initial barchie interaction: 

I’ve seen all the discourse about it seeming like Archie doesn’t care about Betty’s problems, or not taking them seriously, and people comparing Archie’s “oof - that sucks” to jughead’s “white noise” speech in 1x08 (which I thought was cringy AF and I even liked b*ghead at the time) and here’s what I’ll say: 

His “oof - that sucks” comment as MATCHING Betty’s tone - she says it kind of matter of factly and with a bit of an eyeroll, she does NOT seem very upset about it, and she is a grown ass adult who DOESN’T need Archie’s condolences in that moment - and Archie knows that. 

She then brings up Polly, and Archie ASKS A FOLLOW UP QUESTION: “didn’t your mom say she does this? Takes off for a couple of days” which shows that he is referring to a previous conversation about this - they’ve BEEN talking about it and he DOES care (not to mention they showed that he had texted her about Polly at the end of the last episode)

She says she’s trying not to panic - because she knows this is something Polly does and may not actually be in danger - SO HE OFFERS A DISTRACTION during a time when she is basically asking for one, and then SHE COMES UP WITH THE IDEA OF WHERE TO GO HAVE SEX

Anyway I have argued with enough people on twitter about this lol.. I feel strongly.  Also, this scene was super cute and both Archie and Betty look so good in it.  

I love Tabitha.  Smart, enterprising, witty... I’m all for the Jugitha pairing. (seriously though, is a ship name decided for them? I’ve seen Tabhead and Jabitha as well, lol.

Ok Cole is absolutely nailing this “down on his luck, beaten down” adult Jughead.  His character is funny all the sudden?? I love that he kept the money in the tip jar like OF COURSE

Alright, now we have another scene that has people talking, which is where Archie meets Chad.  My thoughts: 

Archie clearly sizes up Chad.  I mean, he dated Veronica for 3-ish years (in the show’s timeline) so yeah, it’s normal to meet your ex’s new partner and size them up.  It read more like “he thinks Chads a douche” as opposed to “he’s jealous of Chad because he wants to be with V”.  

They show makes a point of showing Betty’s reaction to them meeting.  THIS SHOT IS NOT RANDOM.  Yes, I’m sure the show will go there, she’ll get jealous of V at some point.  Betty thinking that Archie is jealous of Chad is not the same as Archie actually being jealous of Chad.  

I kind of loved how Chad just jumps in here to join in the karaoke night - he didn’t redeem himself from the previous scene where he SAT IN THE BACK OF HER CLASS WHILE SHE WORKED but I like how they’re not playing him completely evil

Next scene: BETTY AND TONI ARE TALKING!!! I REPEAT!!! BETTY AND TONI ARE TALKING!!! Seriously, it’s so refreshing that they’re actually letting all kinds of new dynamics and character interactions happen this season.

I am living for Cheryl being completely beautiful whilst yelling at construction workers.  

So like... she actually doesn’t have that much money. She couldn’t really afford the donation for the school... I kind of wish that once she says “I can’t afford it” people would like, not keep pushing? I’m looking at you Toni, whom I absolutely adore, I just wish the writers didn’t make it like Cheryl’s being squeezed dry.  I get that it’s needed for plot purposes but I don’t love it.

Karaoke night thoughts: 

At no point is Jughead hanging out or interacting with the rest of the group.  He stays separate from them - with Tabitha, which I appreciate, but I am just noting this because I’m sure it was done purposefully. 

“She probably forgot it’s Gekko now” uhhhh didn’t Toni announce V as “Veronica Gekko” in the last episode?? LOL THE SHADE

Ok so Chad actually comes off so great in this scene?? I guess this is part of his manipulation - come off as such a great guy in front of all her friends to get them to like him? 

Jughead’s reaction to the duet is so me every time I’ve watched people do karaoke lmao

During the “or do you need more? Is there something else you’re searching for” they cut to Archie’s and Betty’s reaction.  Archie is not thinking about V in that moment.  

I am not seeing one iota of jealousy from Archie.  He looks genuinely happy for them.  

This Chad and Veronica bed scene makes me uncomfortable.  But I’m glad they’re showing their softer moments! 

The Archie/football recruitment sequence... Chad in the back of Veronica’s classroom again??? HOW IS THIS HAPPENING I HATE THIS!! Also, this is another scene where Chad looks jealous of Archie... not the other way around. 

Britta!!! I love her.  And I feel like the writers inserted her in specifically for Britta Lundin, former Riverdale writer and acclaimed author (read her book Ship It, seriously, it’s so good), and I love that. BUT THE WAY ARCHIE LOOKS AT BETTY IN THIS SCENE IS THAT EVEN LEGAL

We get the first glimpse Toni’s “Operation Bring Cheryl Out Of Hiding” plan here, when Archie asks her for funding for the football team and says its earmarked for something else (hmmmmmmm... this plan has been in the works for a while... and I’m here for it) 

Ok. This scene where Archie goes to ask Cheryl for money is... a mess.  My first reaction is that it was so OOC for Archie to bring up Jason in that way.  Then I got to thinking... Archie probably would want to honour his dad in that way and was genuinely suggesting that as something that might actually be helpful to her, as opposed to purposely trying to manipulate her.  He knows what it’s like to lose a family member, he just didn’t realize that Cheryl doesn’t grieve in the same way. The boy doesn’t have a malicious bone in his body.  Anyway, now he’s been banished from Thornhill! But don’t we see him (and everyone) there in a bts photo from possibly 5x08? Isn’t that at Thornhill? Will this be addressed or will the writers just forget it ever happened?

I love Betty and Kevin investigating together. It’s so refreshing.

And Toni is correct, Cheer is a sport so sit down, Archie.  Notably Toni adds in “not even Cheryl managed to do that” - I’m thinking she new Ms. Bell would be eavesdropping ;)

Another scene with Archie - I am still getting zero vibes that he’s into Veronica? And zero vibes that Veronica’s into Archie? It makes complete sense that Veronica would want to help the bulldogs.  Chad is a total dick here and is definitely threatened by Archie... again, not the other way around.  Side note: Chad, if threatened by Archie, is a TOTAL IDIOT for suggesting Archie renovates the Pembrooke - like, he’s going to be working? one question i have about jatp fandom is why so many folks seem determined to interpret and portray bobby as full-on evil.

yes, he passed off sunset curve's (luke's) songs as his own and never acknowledged the other guys' existence. that sucks. full stop. but, hear me out. we have zero knowledge of the context of that decision, and a lot of rich room for interpretation in his current-day reaction to things.

bobby was their friend. he was their bandmate. yes, they give him shit in that opening scene but it's not any different than the shit they give each other throughout the series. there's no air of animosity. maybe he's not as close with the other three as they are with each other, maybe, but we really can't tell from what we see. bobby's not in the band despite being a douchebag, at least not according to anything in the text. that's why i don't get the fics that portray him as a total dick who has to be kicked out of the band to make room for julie, sliding him into the role of villain who's then "out to get" the new band.

i see a lot of posts interpreting bobby's transition into trevor and stealing of luke's songs a purposefully vindictive and calculated scheme. hell, i saw a tweet suggesting that bobby was somehow literally behind the poisoning of the guys' hotdogs in a plot to incapacitate them that went too far. and there's nothing in the show that negates these ideas, but there's also nothing that contradicts another interpretation.

picture this: you're seventeen years old, in a band on the brink of superstardom. your bandmates, your best friends, go to get dinner on the biggest night of your lives and they die. they're dead, and suddenly you are all alone. what does that look like? what does that feel like?

you're seventeen, and you're trying to make it in one of the most predatory industries in the world. your bandmates' deaths are a tragedy, a spectacle, and you're the one left to face the fallout. you are all alone. you survived, and you reap the benefits and the guilt that sows. is it so hard to imagine exactly the wrong sort of person stepping up to "help" bobby through all this? so hard to believe that a record exec might show up and be the supportive adult bobby--seventeen years old, just a kid, all alone, grieving, lost--needs in all the wrong ways?

it makes sense, the way this guy says it. of course he can't give up on music. is that really what the guys would want for him? doesn't he owe it to them to finish what they started? they were something special. bobby is something special. the songs are something special, and they deserve to be heard. and it's okay, bobby is convinced, to take all the credit. he's the one that's left. he can't let his image be bogged down in toxic hotdogs and tears. the way to honor sunset curve is through the music. just the music. that's what luke always cared about anyway, right? it makes sense, the way this guy says it.

if you say something enough, hear it enough, you start to believe it. bobby was just a kid. he made mistakes, huge mistakes, but i doubt he made them all on his own. and once you start digging a hole like that, it only gets deeper. it gets to a point where you can't climb out, or you're dead too. and the guys wouldn't want that for him, right? they'd want him to live the dream. for all of them. right?

when we see adult trevor, he really doesn't seem like a douche. yes, he wears sunglasses inside and looks like a substitute teacher and has a mansion, but does he really appear so awful? we see him as a doting father. we hear about him talking music with little julie, proud to see her rocking out in the youtube video. the wtf look he gives carrie when she makes fun of julie at the orpheum speaks volumes about the kind of person he is.

when the guys haunt him, he seems freaked out. he seems guilty. of course he's guilty. what he did was wrong. he knows that. when you're that far deep, you have to learn to cope with the guilt, and it's hard to when it stares you in the face. but something in that scene strikes me as more about his guilt over his friends' deaths than the music, and not in a too-bad-so-sad-i-did-nothing-wrong way. plus, you know, a fair reaction to being, y'know, haunted.

then there's the scene where he sees the youtube video and the scene at the orpheum. bobby's reactions, his expressions in these scenes say so much. he doesn’t seem guilty, really. he doesn't seem afraid to be caught. he seems haunted, terrified, near tears at the sight of his friends, the boys he lost twenty five years ago, the boys he--maybe--was told he had to leave buried for the greater good. or at least decided he had to leave buried for the greater good.

when i see the look on bobby's face when alex poofs onstage at the orpheum, i see a young boy looking at, quite literally, the ghost of his friend. i see bobby realizing that he left them behind when somehow they weren't really gone. realizing that he fucked up. that he failed them and now they're going to know.

but there's no anger there, beneath the surface. if bobby was evil, if trevor was evil, i think we'd see that. he'd have a vibe of out-to-get-them that isn't there.

if trevor was the villain, why wouldn't he confront julie before the show, try to stop the phantoms before they had a chance to get famous and out him as a fraud? he wasn't trying to stop them. he wanted to see them. to see if he was crazy, or if his friends--his ex-friends?--really were back, in some form.

he almost cried watching them. seeing them up there, living (to some extent) their shared dream. i'm sure it felt like some strange, unreal dream to him.

i don't think bobby is a villain. i think he did the wrong thing. but until proven otherwise, i don't think he did it out of maliciousness. i think he tried to make the best of a bad situation and made some wrong calls. but i don't think he's irredeemable, and i don't think the sunshiney sunset curve boys will hold it against him forever.

in fact, i would love a season two where the guys and bobby awkwardly try to hang out and reconnect, try to navigate not only the uncomfortable reality of the choices bobby made but also just the difference in circumstance of three teenage ghosts and one adult lifer with a kid and twenty five more years of worldly experience. do his tastes count, or is he lumped in as a dad? does he have the same speech patterns and opinions and hobbies as he did in the nineties? would the guys make fun of him for always being in bed by ten, or having a bad back?

just. why are we pushing bobby as a villain when we have just as many reasons to cut him a break? isn't there something special in choosing forgiveness and love?

I love these asks! ETT is a novel by the author of To Be a Virtuous Wife which I also recommend.

Both feature beautiful, smart, calm heroines (who - a rarity in web novel world - actually enjoy sex with their spouses), arranged marriage gradually turning to love, an elegant yet utterly ruthless ML who becomes devoted to heroine etc.

Heroine of ETT is a transmigrator of course. She is now a daughter of a powerful noble house. She is smart and gorgeous but because she is enjoying the leisure lifestyle of her current life after literally working to death in her last one she doesn’t show in public and rival branches of the family put out rumors it’s because she’s hideous. She and her fam are too calm to care.

The emperor hears that and bestows her in marriage on his gorgeous smart nephew. He is trying to make sure none of his nephews have much ground to compete with his son for the throne and thinks giving him a hideous wife will make him resentful or at least want to get concubines and that would mean FL would feel slighted like the sensitive about her looks ugly woman she is supposed to be and he will never be able to get proper support from her clan or all those that support her clan. Oops!

Anyway, I love how rational and calm the heroine is. She has zero desire to rail about the marriage because she has to marry anyway and he’s of appropriate station. But even better, he obviously falls first and it takes a long time for her to open her heart. I mean, she treats him well, she enjoys sex with him, and she doesn’t dislike him but for a long time you get the sense if he died tomorrow she’d calmly finish her breakfast and proceed with life without thinking about him ever again.

He’s elegantly gorgeous (which is why Yang Yang. It’s a much more refined vibe than XJX in Malicious Empress who comes across as a God of Chaos to me), cold and ruthless as hell, smart like anything, but he comes to love her with utter and complete devotion and...mmmm.

Anyway both ETT and Virtuous Wife have a lot of similarities in both plots, set ups and lines ML and FL character types but are distinct enough to be both hugely enjoyable. Also they are not as long as some web novels.

“Cas?” 

Danny looked up from his phone to glance at his mom before his eyes shifted to see who she was referring to. A dark skinned man about his mom’s height with black hair to his shoulders, in jeans and a dark yellow t-shirt was standing with a grocery cart. The man looked around confused for a moment before turning to his mom. Once facing her, he shot her a bright smile.

“Aye, Mads,” he called out cheerfully. 

“Oh, I haven’t seen you since college!” Maddie exclaimed, and Danny internally groaned. He returned his attention back to his phone, continuing to lean onto the grocery cart. He began to text his friends about the interruption. “I can’t believe you came to Amity Park and didn’t tell me!”

He heard his mom continuing to chat. His name soon came up, and he glanced up.

“This is my son, Danny.”

Cas was giving him a bright smile. Danny gave a polite half smile in return, only to freeze as ghost sense went off. He noticed at the end of the isle, a young adult turning the corner, in his early twenties with very long, light blonde hair. Super long, especially for a guy. Jean jacket and dark washed jeans, a regular black band t-shirt. Very ordinary. 

“Dad, they don’t have any salt,” he complained, but he paused upon seeing the conversation. 

“Oh, uh, this is my son, Peter,” Cas introduced briefly, and his entire demeanor shifted. Danny couldn’t help but completely forget the texting conversation. This dude was suddenly...so nervous. “Peter, this is Maddie. We went to college together.”

Peter didn’t come any closer to them. He gave a light, polite wave from afar, and Danny knew that he was staring at his mom...almost nervously. 

“I’m terribly sorry, but we need to get going,” Cas apologized. He pulled the grocery cart with him as he stepped towards his son. “Busy schedule. It was good seeing you!”

“Oh you too!” Maddie was cheerful, seemingly oblivious to the others. The father son duo left the isle, and out of sight. Danny watched after them.

“Where’d you know him from?” Danny wondered. He glanced to see Maddie putting some boxed dinners into their cart.

“Cas? He was an old classmate of your dad and I. Before Vlad, he worked on the portal with us, but ended up dropping out to care for his son, but I’m so glad to hear that he eventually went back and finished. He was always a very smart man,” Maddie replied. She glanced at the list in her hand. “We don’t have much more to get. Let’s try to get done before the rush really comes in.”

“Phantom,” a voice called out to him. Danny glanced over to see Peter standing nearby. The halfa shot him a smile, capping his thermos and a light salute. Though inside he was a bit shaky. Was he really just? Watching that entire fight?

“Hello, citizen!” Danny put on his public hero voice. He paused, half turning away as he prepared to leave. “Well uh, ghost’s contained. I’ll see you around!”

“No!” Peter’s harsh, desperate plea caught him off guard. “Please. We need to talk. I know your secret.” Danny’s blood ran cold. 

“What secret?” Danny asked quickly. “There’s no secret. I’m a ghost, what secret could I have?”

Peter’s look, that absolute knowing, scared Danny. Despite it, he didn’t seem malicious like he had feared. 

“You can’t run, because I really, really actually need your help,” Peter asked. “I know you’re half ghost.” He hurriedly added at Danny’s panicked look, “But I don’t know who your human half is! I don’t care who either, I just really need to know how you’re so stable.” 

The entire statement caught Danny absolutely off guard. Peter wasn’t giving off any kind of vibe like he was with the Guys in White, nor that he was going to hurt him. He couldn’t even sense anybody else around, and he had been fighting in the area long enough to have already set off booby traps if they existed. And his ghost sense...had gone off around him sporadically. 

“What do you mean?” Danny asked. Peter’s lower lip trembled.

“I’m half ghost too,” he claimed. Danny stared, his heart stopping. “But I can’t...it’s literally killing me.”

“I don’t believe you,” he whispered. Peter motioned for him to move back a bit. Danny did.

There were no familiar rings or flash of light that always signaled his transformation. A dark shadow seemed to overwhelm the other, and left behind a figure that was unmistakably ghostly. Electric blue skin that was forever crackling with purple energy with matching purple eyes, the once blond hair now pitch black and floating around him softly. His outfit didn’t change, but Danny’s ghost sense did go off.

Peter held his hand up, and a purple dome shield came up. An ectoplasmic dome shield. He didn’t know how to feel at this revelation. Danny could only stare in awe at the other. There was more like him. It wasn’t just him and Vlad and Dani. They weren’t alone, there were oth-

The newly exposed halfa doubled over with a groan of pain. The shield quickly melted away, and Danny tensed up. He took a step forward.

“D-Don’t!” Peter’s voice gurgled, and Danny stopped. The newly discovered halfa fell to his knees and knees, and he threw up as his ghostly form melted away. As the form melted away, Danny could feel the air being filled with a rush of electricity and static before it finally faded.

“...Are you okay?” Danny called out.

“Yeah, that’s normal,” Peter wheezed, wiping his mouth as he stood back up, wiping his knees of dirt and gravel. “My ghost powers are super unstable. I can’t…not without...” He paused before glancing up at Danny. “Did you ever have a time where you were struggling to get your powers to work?”

“Yeah,” the teen nodded.

“I’m the opposite. I have to force myself to turn it off, and it takes so much energy, and every time I just try to utilize a little bit of power, it’s this…” Peter trailed off. “It’s overwhelming. And it hurts. And I can’t just bottle it up forever. If I don’t let it lose sometimes...it’s not pretty. I try to do it in isolated areas. Just let the excess energy out.”

Danny could only imagine the kind of destruction. If he had to guess, based on the electricity in the air, this guy had some kind of electric core. 

“How’d you...know about me anyway?” Danny changed the subject.

“I didn’t put puzzle pieces together, if that’s your concern,” Peter assured him. “The other halfa told me.” Danny’s eyes widened. “It’s why my dad and I came to Amity Park. We’ve been looking for a halfa to help us, or uh, rather help me.”

“Wait Vlad told you!?” he blurted out. What the fuck, cheesehead!? Oh, when Danny found him, he was gonna.

“No?” Peter’s puzzled tone snapped him out of his anger. “There’s...more than just us three left?” Danny’s undead heart skipped a beat. 

“Five,” Danny replied. “Who’s this other halfa?”

Peter stared somberly at him, glancing at his feet briefly as he toed with some of the rubble. 

“...I don’t know his human name. I purposefully didn’t ask,” Peter told him. “I originally asked him to help me, but he’s in a terrible spot and needed help of his own, help we couldn’t give. Not without getting ourselves in worse trouble. He said you were a halfa though. It had to be worth a shot. There’s not many of us left anymore.”

“How’d you even become half-ghost?” Danny asked curiously. Peter cocked his head in confusion. 

“I was? Born this way? Ghost mom, human dad?” he said slowly. He studied Danny curiously, and it seemed to click. “Wait were you not born half ghost?”

“You were born this way?” Danny asked back. His mind was going crazy. You could be born a half-ghost? That was possible? How come his parents never knew that? This would definitely explain why his dad seemingly dropped the Fentons as a friend... “Wait, many of us left?” 

Peter’s face told him nearly everything. Something happened. Something bad. The other cleared his throat. 

“Um...yeah,” he said quietly. “It’s kind of a long story. I don’t know all the details, cause I was kinda young, but basically...there was a lot of us. We had our own little section of the Ghost Zone. Do you know how the Bermuda Triangle is a giant natural ghost portal?” Danny nodded in confirmation. “There’s a section of the Ghost Zone near where it spawns most often that we used to inhabit, because of all the otherworldly crossing. Well, we were there. Before the Guys in White found out about us, and they came, and.” 

His breath hitched. Danny felt sick. The Guys in White...knew. The hairs on the back of his neck stood up. They not only knew, but did this...oh fuck then that meant that there was a chance that they knew about him, and Vlad, and…..oh no.

“...Died?” Danny guessed quietly. Peter let out a breathless chuckle. 

“No. They’re lucky if the GIW just killed them,” he replied flatly. “It’s honestly terrible. I don’t think you wanna know.” Peter was right; Danny didn’t want to know. It was Peter’s turn to be curious. “So...you weren’t born this way? Right? So how…”

“I was in an accident,” Danny kept it simple. Peter raised an eyebrow.

“Must be one hell of an accident,” he commented. Danny chuckled nervously. Peter sighed heavily. “So, I still don’t know if you can actually help my stabilization issue…cause of the differences…”

“I’ll do what I can!” Danny blurted out. Peter’s face brightened. “Please. I’d love to know more about halfas. We can compare stuff.” The young adult let out a sigh of relief.

“Come to my house tonight, my parents can tell you everything they know,” Peter agreed. He reached into his pocket to pull out the familiar small notebook. He ripped a page out, jotting down an address Danny already knew. “Just...come alone.”

Danny nodded, holding his hand out for the paper. Peter gave it to him, and despite the other powering down, Danny still felt a bit of an electric shock as they grazed hands. 

“I’ll see you then,” Danny promised. 

Grasping the note, he waved a goodbye, and he flew out. He had so much to tell Jazz.

Some rimmer headcanons under the cut Bc I was thinking about writing a fic but have commitment issues when it comes to actually writing

1. Rimmer is autistic and you can pry this out of my cold dead hands. Main ways he stims are his salutes and biting his knuckles. Huge parts of why he was bullied and treated poorly by his family come from the fact that he always has had issues sociallizing in the “”””normal”””” way and has related learning issues. Very obsessed with being punctual and following social rules that he doesn’t quite understand, a lot of his self esteem issues come from the fact that he knows he’s doing the right thing per social conventions but he’s doing it wrong?? Why is it wrong when he does his version of it, he’s trying his best?? Projecting onto a fictional character time: is very much the way he is in the show because he was able to repress a lot of the things that made him ‘obvious’ and now just appears to be an incredibly socially awkward/weird person as opposed to someone who just communicates differently. Likes repetitive, involved, logic and planning related type things (war strategy, board games, schedule and list making, engineering related stuff). Zero actual interest in Astronav type stuff but feels obligated to be good at it and has it drilled into his brain that it was the only way he was going to amount to something so he forces himself to try to be good at it, but that’s part of the reason he’s so crap at it. So used to being bullied that he feels like he needs to be above other people to protect himself because he’s so used to abuse of power being pointed at him.

2. Gay. that’s it, just gay. He knows it, he doesn’t deny internally as much as he did as a child. He’s absolutely absorbed so much homophobia from his family that he goes to great lengths to cover it up, but he isn’t unaware of it or so repressed that he’s convinced himself he’s not. All of the talk about women and porn and all that shit is a very elaborate and paranoid cover. He literally owns straight porn so when lister digs through his shit he thinks he’s found rimmers real porn and stops looking. Keeps gay porn stashed in some ridiculous hiding spot. Tells himself he’s verse but he’s really just a kind of dominant/pushy bottom. Did actually have sex with Yvonne because that was a gross and dodgy situation (on both ends but falls on rimmer because he was in control of his faculties) she was not fully aware of the situation but he was not the one who initiated it and essentially went along with it out of a lack of self respect and awareness for what was going to come of it (which makes him shitty because rimmer is still a scummy, miserable person). In his teen years and early twenties he thought maybe he could really ‘cure’ himself of it some way but everything he tried wasn’t worth it in the end and he just decided to never speak of it.

3: what made Ace different. Repeating a grade comes off like a joke when it’s explained that is why Ace is who he is. Really when he repeated that grade he was put into a remedial type class that tended to gather the kids with learning disabilities, bad home lives, trauma, etc (all the things that tend to make it harder for a child to suceed) and he was given new tools that boosted his confidence in being able to learn and socialize, maybe never got a proper diagnoses but just the proof that he could learn and do well if he approaches things in a different way was a huge game changer. Still had a lot of deep seated homophobia from his family and trauma from being treated differently from his brothers but it was easier to cope. Ace is still gay and the whole saving the damsel in distress and riding off into the sunset shit comes from following socializing as set rules instead of something involving nuance, follows the trope of a hero because if he’s going to go around saving worlds he’s going to do it the ‘right’ way, which is part why he has such an over the top ‘action hero’ stereotype vibe. Ace wishes that more of the rimmers he met were willing to listen to him because he just wants to drop a truth bomb and open of their potential. Ace still has a lot of unsorted issues, they just tend to be more internal than immediately obvious.

4: Relationship with Lister: incredibly, ridiculously angry and embarrassed when he realizes lister is attractive. Will never admit it but when Lister is first teaching Kryten how to break his programming he’s sad that no one ever taught him how to break out of his ‘programming’. His want to be friends with Lister is something he struggles with (early seasons especially) because he craves Listers respect but the only way Rimmer knows how to get respect is by outranking someone. Comes out to lister when he’s drunk. Lister has casually mentioned men in ways that he mentions women (but never directly says he’s attracted to men, so it just becomes a paranoid obsession in Rimmers mind, is he into guys or is rimmer just reading into it to much?) and brings up a story that is blatantly about a guy he’s dated (but rimmer still isn’t quite sure because it’s not a 100% straight forward statement) and Rimmer comments on his jealousy of lister being so open minded and nonchalant about men. Lister puts the pieces together from there and makes a point to try to make the environment of the ship more welcoming, still takes rimmer ages to fully come out. (Lister is the biggest bi on the ship and isn’t fully in the closet, he just doesn’t talk about it explicitly, people who know how lister communicates pick up on it, but most people just think he’s a friendly guy)

5. Clothes and presentation. This ones more for fun because I would love to see how rimmer would dress himself if he could get past more of his trauma. Shorts and cropped pants and tailored pants are a big one. If there wasn’t such a stigma on how gay men dress and style themselves he would be less afraid to wear something a little less baggy. Actually loves color (the uniform change from the khakis to the red, blues, and greens he wears later in the show is just absolutely fantastic. Not an accessory person, would rather just have a smooth, sleek look with well fit clothes and a pop of colors on neutrals. I think the cross dressing in the show doesn’t necessarily/purposefully come from a malicious place but is definitely a sign of the times, outdated ideas of humor and a lack of understanding of gender non conforming. Rimmer wouldn’t be opposed (well if he could get past his trauma (which is why we only see this trait in low rimmer or when he has the holo virus)) to dressing up in “””female”””” clothes, especially not the odd accessory or sexy outfit if it were a kink thing but has an overall more masculine sense of style. In a perfect reality where he was nurtured and encouraged I feel like he would identify and present in a more fluid way, but the cannon rimmer isn’t really capable of recognizing and expressing himself like that.

6: Sexual/romantic History. Oh boy. rimmer has been on dates with women, mainly to keep up apperences and make it look like he’s trying to be successful with women. Has no idea what good flirting sounds like because all the times someone has genuinely flirted with him he’s explained it away be convincing himself they’re just overly friendly or are trying to make fun of him (or he just doesn’t pick up on it). When he flirts it’s either completely over the top obvious garbage because he’s trying to get his point across or it’s vague small comments that really aren’t flirting because he’s attempting nuance or feels like he’s being to out in the open. Has had maybe one or two sexual encounters with men, always on shore leave as far from where the ship has docked as possible and always working to cover his tracks the entire time. By the time the stasis leak happens his sexual encounters with men had never reached penatration and really just amounted to some head and fooling around that he felt conflicted (but happy) about afterwards.

I probably have more floating around in my brain but I’ve really only just hit season three of my rewatch so this is all based on early seasons, some fanfic I binged, projection, and what I remember from the other couple of times I’ve watched the series.

The canon bases of RudeAggro!Felix and Apologetic!Dimitri

(Since I actually spent an entire evening doing this, I’m posting it because I don’t want to feel I “lost” all that time haha! I sort of do this kind of stuff for work sometimes, so this is clearly the sad fate of a person who can’t leave their work at work and brings it into their hobbies 😂 )

I’ve read a lot of Dmlx fic (in English), and have seen a lot of art, and there’s a trend I’ve noticed in the characterisations of both Felix and Dimitri that stands out to me: Rude and aggressive Felix, and Apologetic Dimitri. More specifically, Felix being rude/aggressive to Dimitri, and Dimitri apologising to Felix. The characterisations stand out to me only because my hc characterisations are more like “tsundere” Felix, and polite Dimitri. There’s obviously an overlap between “rude/aggressive” and “tsundere”, as well as “apologising” and “polite”, but they are not the same thing, at least from the part of the world I come from (I played with the JP audio on English text). I wanted to figure out if I was missing something from canon, so decided to take a short dive and check out the source material.

This meta isn’t an attack on people’s preferences. Creators of fan works depict characters in a variety of ways for personal reasons, and it’s no one’s business to pass judgement on that. I’m not trying to legitimise my hc, or delegitimise othere people’s hc. All I want to know is whether there is  strong canon basis for the characterisations, which I might have missed. I’m also not saying that “unless a characterisation is based off canon 100% it’s not legit”.  I don’t believe in that statement. Looking at canon is one way for me to see whether the “RudeAggro Felix”, “Apologetic Dimitri” is more a case of creator extrapolation, or based off something very clearly there in the canon.

So I’m gonna look at three bits of text. 1) The words and expressions used in the support conversations, both JP and EN 2) The tone in the voice acting, both JP and EN in the support conversations, and 3) Dimitri and Felix’s lines in Azure Moon route chapters + in the monastery, but only in the JP (it was easier for me to search the JP text quickly, more effort required for the EN). Of course there’s more you can glean about their characters from other supports etc, but I don’t have that much free time… 

Heads up I’m a bilingual and bicultural Japanese/Aussie (have lived in both countries), so I’m pretty confident in my interpretations of the JP text and audio.

Rude and Aggressive Felix

There’s a lot of canon for this characterisation to be based on. Listing the words and expressions Felix uses when talking to Dimitri is pretty aggressive, and is meant to be demeaning if we take it at face value.

Felix insults/expressions of aggression 

Support C

その気味の悪い笑顔で話しかけるな。/ Go away. (I would add “Don’t talk to me with that creepy/spooky/grotesque smile of yours.”)

見ているだけで胸糞悪くなる。/ Just looking at your face makes me wanna retch 黙れ。獣は獣らしくしていろ。/ Shut up. And stop walking around on your hind legs. 獣 / beast 猪 / wild boar ならばさっさと失せろ、邪魔だ。話しかけるな、この化け物が。/ Hurry up and get out of my sight.  I don’t make a habit of talking to beasts.

Support B

猪 / wild boar 貴様 / an aggressive form of addressing “you” in Japanese, although in this sentence it’s not used aggressively 阿呆が。/ Do you take me for a fool?  (I took the Japanese more along the lines of “Are you stupid?”) 腹立たしい……。/Looking at your face is making me angry (No JP equivalent) / Farewell, Your Beastliness.

Support A

獣 / beast (but used in the context of the “the face of a beast vs the face of a man” line) 手が滑って斬りつけないうちに、答えろ。Answer quickly before my hand slips and I cut you in half お前の辛気臭い顔が、癇に障って仕方なかっただけだ / I couldn’t stand the pathetic look on your face.

Stepping out of the Dimitri/Felix support conversations for a bit, we know from Felix’s other interaction he is also rude and aggressive. Calling Dedue “dog” is probably the rudest and most demeaning example we have. Telling Ingrid to go and get married is also pretty rude. So overall we have a lot of evidence that Felix is ok with being abrasive, at best. Intentionally hurtful and malicious at the worst.

So Felix is rude to Dimitri in their support conversations, but the rudeness lessens as the support levels increase.  As you can see from the list above, the number of expressions of aggression go down between conversations C and A. Felix doesn’t call Dimitri “boar” once in the A support conversation. The last line “癇に障って仕方なかっただけだ / I couldn’t stand the pathetic look on your face” is a bit tricky, since I think there’s a bit of a divergence between the JP acting and EN acting. The JP is very clearly a "tsundere" intonation, meaning there’s a vibe of “I care but am too embarrassed to admit it”. The EN was a lot less obviously for me, so if you only got the EN there’s a chance that Felix’s  “I couldn’t stand the pathetic look on your face” comes across at face value - an actual insult.

Outside the support conversations, Felix uses the words “boar/beast” to describe Dimitri specifically quite often. But the intention behind the use seems to change (from an attack on one’s character to a nickname). Looking at the AM route, lines within each chapter + in the monastery phase, we find he uses the words ten times in total. That’s a descent amount, considering the number of lines he probably has overall (I’m not that dedicated to count all his lines… proper methodology would want me to do that though…). The last two times he uses “boar” it seems more of a nickname rather than as a way to attack Dimitri’s person.

A surprise find was that Dimitri uses “beast” five times overall , in the same contexts that I checked for Felix’s use (AM route, lines within each chapter + in the monastery phase in JP). In all cases he is describing either Imperial soldiers, or the baddies at Remier village. Never in reference to himself (which I thought might come up, but didn’t).So 

TLDR; There is canon basis of Felix being rude to Dimitri, but it looks like he mellows out a lot by the end of the game.  The JP flags the “tsundere” vibes a lot more than the English.

Apologetic Dimitri

I’m gonna start with the numbers from the chapters + monastery sections first, because these are the bits that clearly form the canon basis of “apologising Dimitri”. But with some interesting twists!

As a quick and dirty measure, I searched for the characters 謝 (to catch 謝る、謝罪 etc), 悪 (to catch 悪いな、悪かった), and すまない. I didn’t search for ごめん/ごめんなさい (gomen/gomennasai) bc I bet you three cups of coffee that you won’t find Dimitri using this expression.  ごめん/ごめんなさい is more typical of children and women, or super casual. So Edelgard and Claude might use these, but not Dimitri.  

Dimitri apologise a ton in the chapters and monastery sections. For all three words, we have 16 expressions of “sorry” from Dimitri. For comparison, I just checked the first five chapters for Claude. Chapters 1-5 Dimitri apologises 7 times, while Claude apologises once. So yeah, canonically, we find good grounds for Dimitri being a person who apologises often. We’ll see later that in his other supports with Blue Lions characters, he apologies to them also.

Dimitri apologises 6 times after Rodrigue dies in chapter 18. And 4 of these apologies are concerning his behaviour while he was disengaged with the war effort/unwell. These kind of feel a bit different to the “sorry to inconvenience you” type apologies that are more typical of his sorries (see list below)

To Byleth: 4, for being boring (1), for making a weird request (1), for Byleth helping out (2) To Edelgard: 2, once about making Edelgard feel bad bc she thought he was underestimating her, and once about the poor choice of gift he gave her during their childhood. To Lonato: 2, for the general badness of the situation To Claude: 1, (but unclear to me what exactly he’s apologising about) To Dedue: 1, for surprising him To Mercedes: 1 (need to check again To a Kingdom soldier: 1, because the soldier was looking for him To Lonato’s soldier: 1, for the general badness of the situation

Most of these apologies are of the “sorry for being an inconvenience” type. This could be interpreted in a variety of ways ranging from just being polite right through to low self-esteem. Whatever the construal, it does seem objectively that Dimitri says “sorry” a lot more than other male characters who might have as many lines.

Dimitri and apologising to Felix

Dimitri apologising to Felix, we have exactly one example in the chapter conversations. In chapter 18, Dimitri says to Felix “I have no words to apologise adequately” or something along those lines, regarding Rodrigue’s death. (And shortly after, Felix addressed Dimitri by name).

We have zero cases of Dimitri apologising to Felix in the support conversations. For a quick comparison in his other support conversations, Dimitri apologises to Ashe once, Sylvain once, Ingrid once, Annette twice, Mercedes three times (but the expressions he uses are different to the three I mention earlier). Interestingly, Dimitri also doesn’t apologise to Dedue.

These numbers might just be reflecting the fact that Dimitri and Felix’s support conversations aren’t really topics where apologies would be made. Dimitri and Felix’s support conversations aren’t about burdening each other, being a nuisance, or supporting each other. Their support conversations are actually about Felix coming to terms with Dimitri’s dual nature, while Dimitri himself seems seems unbothered by it.  (The only place in canon we really see Dimitri using his words to express remorse and discomfort over his dual nature seems to  be his A+ support with Mercedes).

Dimitri’s responses to Felix’s rudeness in support C are more like indirect affirmations of Felix’s characterisations of him (“A beast craving blood, am I? I assume you’re speaking of the events two years ago”, “I deny nothing, Felix.”, “Perhaps you’re right.”). Maybe a little bit resigned. There are a handful of sad-faces. It actually seems to me that Dimitri is in general agreement with Felix.

In support B, Dimitri is unbothered by Felix’s abrasiveness. When Felix gives him a hard time, Dimitri tends to push back (“As though I would be careless with something so valuable.”, “Come now, that was so long ago!”).  In this entire exchange it’s only Felix who is bothered by something, while Dimitri seems quite oblivious to Felix’s turmoil. The final line in this support is Dimitri saying “What is going on with him…”

Support A Dimitri is quite assertive of himself  (“ Do not waste your breath on questions with such obvious answers / 当たり前のことを聞くな”, “ You are wrong/ ……違う”), still a it resigned (“Always so ominous / お前はいつも物騒だな。”), but unlike supports A and B, showing awareness of Felix’s internal state, and thanks Felix.

Dimitri seems generally unbothered by Felix giving him a hard time, and Dimitri does not apologise for his character. Dimitri seemed ok with his dual nature, while it was Felix who was more bothered by it. But by the end of the game, if support A is reached, Felix also comes around to accept the dual nature. Dimitri and Felix aren’t really in an “apologise to each other” relationship, because it seems from Dimitri’s POV, there is nothing about himself that he needs to apologise to Felix for.

So TLDR

There is good canon basis for rude/aggro Felix. There is good canon basis for apologetic Dimitri. Dimitri apologises a lot in canon, but not really Felix. The one time he apologises is concerning Rodrigue’s death. But given that Dimitri does apologise to people often for inconveniencing them, it’s not hard to imagine how Dimitri would apologise to Felix for inconveniencing him in some way.

So I don’t think I missed anything in canon, but fan creators extrapolate these canon bases into various directions. Which is cool! Because isn’t that the fun of doing fan works!
