The Fair Folk; A Shadowed Souls Novel: An Introduction

The Story: Riichi Saito had a troubled childhood, but as a young adult they want nothing more than a quiet life far from the angst of their youth. The universe is not so kind. They think they have a chance at that peace when their absent mother’s sister leaves them a small house in a teeny community call Blindthicket, but that proves hectic as not only was it not actually from their aunt, their mother turns out to be… … A fairy dictator? Can nothing be easy in their life? Mitchell Spring is a Foundling; a human who was kidnapped as young child and replaced with a changeling. He’s not known freedom for a second in his life, but he’s willing to fight for it, and to rally the other foundlings to do the same. But the fey queens are powerful, and the Changeling Mother dangerous. He needs help to do it. Help on their level. So, when he finds out that the Autumn Queen has a secret child who could take the empty winter throne, he jumps to try to recruit them to help. But he doesn’t want to force them as they refuse, and he tries to find another way while protecting them from their mother.

Fair Folk is an extremely pro-solidarity story with found family elements, a queer romance subplot, and themes of harmful parenting and healing from that.

Childhood prodigy classical musician who quit competitions and performing in public at all when they were 16, after their father went to jail and could no longer force them. They don’t even like music anymore, but it was all they had for their entire life, and they feel like they can’t let it go.

Really, they want to find love

for it again. They just don’t know how, and it seems pretty impossible as more family drama comes to haunt them, now from their mother’s side of the family.

Mitchell Spring

He/him

Mitchell is a painter who never has the time to paint, instead having all his time taken by the fey who kidnapped him as a young child.

He could just runaway; he has just enough freedom to manage that, but he wants to change things, and free all foundlings and not just himself. So revolution it is.

They might be able to keep individual foundlings under their thumbs, but they can’t do it to all of them.

He hopes to make it so no kid is ever kidnapped like he was again

James Hynes

He/him

James Hynes is a Changeling, placed in a home to replace a child who’s name he now shares that was kidnapped. He ran away from that home when he was 16, and that’s when the Changeling Mother called him back to the Fey world, to help run the very system that produced him. And he hates it.

He was daydreaming his own revolution before he met Mitchell, and after they met, the two were inseparable, slowly and secretly building a coalition from the ground up.

Other Characters:

Nina Spring: Nina is a six-year-old Foundling girl in Mitchell’s care. He took her under his wing (and basically adopted her) as a way to protect her from the very mistreatment he received from the Changeling Mother as a child. She’s endlessly curious and very talkative.

Kyle Spring: A foundling who started in the Autumn court, but recently was transferred to Spring as to work under Mitchell.

Malina Autumn: Malina is the highest ranked foundling of the Autumn court, and she’s an ally of Mitchell’s in his planned revolution. Buff girl who kicks ass and takes no one’s shit.

The Changeling Mother: All Changelings are descended from her, though none are born directly from her these days, as she lets the lesser mothers do that, and she runs the entire awful system. She’s a very abusive woman, and no changeling or foundling wants her direct attention.

The Autumn Queen: Queen of the Autumn Court and Riichi’s mother. She’s cold, unpredictable, and cruel. She hates being denied what she wants to extreme degree.

The Spring Queen: Queen of the Spring Court, and Mitchell’s ‘boss’. She capricious and harsh and willing to go to any lengths to prove herself better than her sisters at all costs.

Zelda is actually stuck in Link's brain, sorta sharing his body with him

To keep them separate from the others, I'll be calling this Link “Stray” and this Zelda “Crown" in other posts

Due to some presumably evil shenanigans I'll eventually probably figure out, Zelda’s being sort of combines with Link. That is, she's now trapped in his mind. Link is primarily in control, but Zelda can control Link if she chooses, anywhere from a single finger to his entire body and voice. But the more she controls, the more energy it takes, so she can only do so much for so long.

Understandably, Link hates it. They didn't know each other prior to this experience and their lives could not have been more different. Link grew up a street rat with no family and nothing to his name aside from what he stole, while Zelda had a cushy castle life as princess.

Unsurprisingly, they argue a LOT. He thinks the kingdom is being run terribly. Poverty is a major issue in some areas. Zelda is offended because hey, that's her dad's rulership he's insulting! He's gotta be wrong, this kingdom is perfect under his reign! Right?

On the other hand, Zelda thinks Link is super selfish and grumpy and does not comprehend the joy that can come from doing things just for the sake of doing them, the happiness that comes from giving. She might be a bit sheltered but she loves to help out staff or give them gifts or whatever. It's so fun to see them happy. He thinks that's a waste of time - what good is that gonna do when he's scrambling for a bite of food?

So they both have things to learn and grow from, basically.

Also Zelda can feel what he feels - physically and even mentally to some extent - which sucks a lot because, well, injury is inevitable when fighting evil, among other things.

Crown was the nickname chosen for Zelda because, obviously, she's the princess. The crown weighs heavy and all that - she has a responsibility to her people, even if her abilities are limited until she comes into power. ALSO she lives in Link's crown/head atm LOL

Stray was picked for Link because he is, in a sense, a stray. He's got no real home. But also he's strayed from the path of who he could be. He's lost his sense of good. The desire to help others and do good things was something he lost a long time ago and now it's time for him to find that path again.

late-night Poptropica OC intros and world headcanons…

hey everyone! so… i’ve been coming up with my own canon/interpretation/additions to the not-so-consistent and concrete lore of Poptropica (more of the in-game stuff rather than the books FYI) it’s probably gonna sound super silly, but eh. lemme have fun! :P

so, i realized how there isn’t really any explanation on why your lil’ guy goes around on a blimp and collects medallions… and so i’ve created an lighter-than-air-vehicle-centered guild where Maroon, my main Poptropica OC is a member of, and earns medallions through!🏅

this is all still a WIP, but here’s what i’ve got so far:

in the guild, aspiring pilots learn to fly, maintain and/or build airships, as well as carry out missions to different islands that they can choose to do that are presented on a mission board, and are paid upon completion. a majority of them are cargo transport jobs, but there’s odd job offers, and even more riskier ones like spy missions. they are all set up by other people, companies, organizations, traders/merchants etc.

if a Poptropican completes notable missions, they earn a medallion as well as getting paid. it gives them an incentive as well as bragging rights! 😎

but yeah! i have some more stuff on it, but that’s the basics. i don’t want this post to be too wordy

anyways, onto my two main(ish) OCs, Maroon Ring and Aster! (i still need to figure out a last name for her LOL) if she doesn’t look familiar to you, that’s bc i lowkey forgot about her, oops…. i’m finally starting to work on her again! oh, and she went by a different name previously.

Maroon: my main gal you’ve probably seen! she’s a seasoned airship pilot and guild member with her own ride, the Waxwing! 🌟 she joined the guild to get away from taking upon the family’s pawn shop, and she doesn’t regret a thing! though, on her travels, she sometimes finds herself marooned, (ha get it?) which has led to some interesting counters both on land and air…and had the misfortune of coming across a fleet of Sky Pirates…

speaking of which….

Aster: the cunning captain of the mysterious but formidable fleet of Sky Pirates that she leads across the skies of Poptropica! any unlucky air travelers who crosses their path will be captured. despite her stern look, Aster has humble seamstress origins, and creates custom clothing for her crew. yay! 💜

side note: i came up with the Sky Pirates for the 2020 dream island contest, but never got around to finishing anything. so, i’ve made them a part of my own ideas! yippee!
