Just in case you think being a nerd doesn’t help in the real world:
Back when I was in college (some 15 years ago at the time of this particular event), I got a high-five from a professor because I knew that Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary were the first two people to successfully summit Mount Everest and return. The reason I knew that? Because, in one of the Lord of the Rings Extended Editions’ appendices videos, Sir Edmund Hillary visited set one day when they were filming — and I was (and still am) a LOTR nerd.
So, yeah. Being a nerd means that random information and trivia gets lodged into your brain for unexpected reasons. You don’t always have to explain how or why it got there. Just, revel in the strange confidence that you picked up absurd caches of information due to whatever your specific nerdy interests are.

Do you have more Moby Dick: Modern Translation chapters anywhere that certain interested parties (me and everyone with taste) could read?
In reference to this translation of Moby Dick into insufferable modern idiom, in which Ishmael is suddenly shown up in a startling light as a person we’ve actually met and knew well but didn’t really like:
I’m sorry, I haven’t written any more of that! After chapter 1’s mad rush of energy, the book tackles more tricky, boring and unfunny content, including passages that are just uncomfortably problematic in any time; and, like, entire chapters about listening to a church sermon.
A line translation (and that is mostly a very faithful line translation! The only thing I regret not doing was perfectly capturing the fart joke!) apparently has a lot of educational value, and helps to reframe the whole novel. That’s worthy work! But i simply wouldn’t want to do a line translation on the next few chapters. My brain is picking daisies instead, already. I would say: “sorry, I’m abridging this for my own mental health. You’re eligible for a free refund.” In which case the educational value is negligible (you can just read the plot summary online. There’s a really big whale in it.)
Anyone else who wants to take a stab at it (FROM HELL’S HEART) would be welcome and I’ll gladly promote your efforts. It’s just. I am going

“And all of this is captured by the greedy eyed photographer who stalks me like a vulture!” -Nick Carraway, The Met
(Non Text Version and ramblings under the cut)
Back to our regularly scheduled Gatsby Posting as of late. This time the song of inspiration is The Met from The Great Gatsby Musical! I would be a lying fool if I said the symbolism in this song has not had an iron grip on my writer brain from the very start. I adore the blatant spotlight it places on Nick and his constant being overshadowed and almost hunted by those around him throughout the story. Seriously, whoever wrote these lyrics, you are great. Also Noah J Ricketts an absolutely amazing Nick I just have to say that. I will absolutely be continuing to loop this soundtrack and am actively trying to plan a trip to NY to see the show live because if I don’t my sorry English nerd self will perish. Until my next post!
