Lyric videos - Skillet

One of the bands I liked listening to earlier in my life, was an alternative rock band called Skillet. I liked their unique style of mixing violin and rock. With this week's subject, I realized that I had never really watched or focused on any of their official videos. I only paid attention to their official lyric videos.

The presentation of music, or the way a piece of music is sung, always sets the mood in which the lyrics take another meaning. Usually, the videos mean to amplify the lyrics, convey additional feelings, and set a specific mood. For Alternative rock (and maybe rock in general), there will be, almost always, the band performing with passion, with a chosen background, usually with indexes of fire (whether it's a representation of fireworks for celebration or a representation of a feeling of being overwhelmed or else.)

I'd like to talk about the lyrical videos that developed probably at the beginning of YouTube. Youtube and social media have allowed a new sort of Home Karaoke Night, which I love. I remember the time when fans used to do it and misspelled or misunderstood the lyrics, which sometimes changed the meaning of the songs. Today, we sometimes have "official lyric videos" made by the artists/production. Most of them are very representative of the albums.

Skillet, an alternative rock band, edited their own animated lyrical videos for 2 of their songs from the same album; "Rise" and "we're not gonna die tonight", animating the main character of the album which is a little girl. Are they the only ones who have done this? No idea, but it made me wonder why they did it. I think that the official videos and the lyric official videos complete each other in a way. But can we say that it's an alternative to the videos? If so, why?

Let's take the "we're not gonna die tonight". Already, spreading hope from the title, right? The video conveys an atmosphere of despair and at the same time of hope. The surrounding whiteness in all the different scenes, and the nice clothes the band wears … are symbols of hope and of life when death is near, which is what the song is about. There's a dimension of amplification between the lyrics and the visual items.

The lyric video animates a fight between a lion and a girl versus a hydra, the mythical beast who seems impossible to beat. The words are fairly easy to remember and repetitive, and yet, they appear bolded dark red (like blood) and take all the space they can on the screen, even sometimes covering the main interest of the animation at specific moments. There is still an amplification of the words by the visual.

In case you didn't know they are a Christian rock band the lyrics combined with the symbols in the videos point directly to Christianity and the hope in religious beliefs: Christ's 'flatline', the one that died for humanity to live again, and "takes your life back" and "you fight back". You got the point! There is no interest in telling how it refers to Christianity right now.

The question I have is the following: Why?! Did the band want to emphasize and keep both videos specific, but different for each, visual representation? How is this relevant to my 'karaoke' time? Could it be another method of printing words into the mind of the audience, especially with an important message of hope, knowing that the band values and builds their whole music around their beliefs? If it was a marketing method, more people would use it, right? So, I think it must be more of a question of printing a message in people's hearts like ecclesiastics do, but in their own way.

Usually, lyric videos are a way to enjoy a good social time, or a way to not only get the "hook" part right but the whole song right. Here, the band got to keep important visual elements to keep an amplification effect as long as there is visual support.

I. Meet the soul

Having the name Millie Everelyn, I do not set a specific nickname and allows people to call me anything – as convenient. Born in the December sky twenty years ago, making me one of the fire signs, Sagittarius. Proudly, I am one of a part of a house with people who are bravery and courage, where the house has a representation of lion with the colors are scarlet and gold. Yes, I am a Gryffindor. As for personality, I am an ENTP who likes to be discussed with many things and use She/Her as my pronouns. I love animals, especially dogs and cats. I am currently trying to find out about many animals and learn about them. I am the oldest sibling with eight younger siblings {cats} – I have eight adorable cats. Last but not least, I'm a meme collector.

II. Interest of the soul

I am a music lover and like all genres of songs, whatever they are. But the genres that I often listen to are: Pop, Rock, Metal, Indie, Hip-Hop, R&B. My top five Kpop groups: BoyNextDoor, 82Major, P1Harmony, Kiss Of Life, Fromis_9. My top five KHHRNB: DPR Gang, Jey, Zico, Gemini, DEAN.

My current reading: The Girl Who Lived Twice, Museru Kurai no Ai o Ageru (Choking on Love), Operation: True Love. Apart from that, I like anime and am paying attention to Korean dramas of any genre. My current watching: Takt Op Destiny, Twinkling Watermelon, DC Titans.

III. Addendum: Pay attention

DocLion relationship hcs please?

of course! a nice contrast from the relaxed doc/rook ones i just did :)

1.) Doc normally can handle his temper and is used to his patience being tested, but Lion really pushes that to its limits. Mainly it’s because Lion loves seeing Doc all flustered and frustrated. It’s absolutely adorable to him.“Is peace and quiet too much to ask for, Olivier?”

2.) With their fields of work lining up, Lion sometimes decides to join in and work side-by-side with Doc. They both take their work seriously, but their differing morals haven’t changed that much. Occasionally they’ll argue, but usually it’ll allow them to come up with a compromise that will satisfy more people than their ideas individually.“Things can’t always go perfectly. Plan for things to go wrong, and you’ll handle it better.”“Or I can plan it perfectly and make sure nothing will go wrong.”

3.) Doc has a soft spot for Lion’s son. As someone who never was particularly interested in having a kid, it was a surprise how he felt about Alexis. And especially with his mindset towards Lion. Though he hopes that perhaps he can create a welcoming environment for his son, and maybe that could repair the damaged bond between him and Lion. Perhaps some day Alexis will refer to Lion as his father, and Doc can only hope he will be able to play a role in that.“Is Alexis coming over sometime soon? We should clean up and make things look nice, and maybe get him a gift?”

4.) Lion’s love for heavy metal music has caused a few frayed ends when Doc is trying to focus, but with being exposed to it for so long, sometimes Doc even requests for him to play a song. It makes Lion swell with pride, and he always happily will swap the song to whatever he asks.“Hmm… what was… what was that band? It was another name for a pan, I believe.”“Skillet?”

5.) Despite what seems like a troublesome relationship, they still get along more often than they don’t. The two know their arguments aren’t anything detrimental, and don’t even consider them to be that. They enjoy butting heads with each other, because it’s all in good fun. They have come a long way since that one disastrous operation.“Je t'aime, Gustave.”

6.) Lion tends to be the one who shows more affection, while Doc is more so the stubborn and seemingly reluctant recipient. Doc tends to give sarcastic responses in return to his affection, but he will never ignore them entirely. Usually he’ll at least return a kiss, no matter his reaction.“Go to hell, Olivier.”
