Forever and Always

Gale hummed under his breath as he made his way to Sorcerous Sundries, the book he'd ordered nearly a month ago had arrived. The letter has been almost swallowed by all the other pieces of mail. 

Most of it, as usual, was for Astarion. Thank you letters for his assistance funding the rebuilding of Baldur's Gate. Invitations to dinner parties. People he consulted with for whatever reason. 

Gale didn't ask. He didn't want to know. 

Gale only received letters from his mother. And those weren't very often either. He never knew what to say to her when the time actually came to write back. He didn’t think Astarion would stoop so low as to actually read his mail. Even so he always gave the standard response. 

‘I’m doing well. My book is coming along nicely, might even talk to the Bladur’s Mouth about printing some excerpts. Astarion is good as well. Busy with all his endeavors. How is Tara? Not still cross with me I hope?’ 

Sometimes he managed to include a few gifts. Something he thought his mother would enjoy. She’d stopped asking to visit, he never gave her any direct answers. 

Astarion could have many things, and Gale was willing to do many things, but he wasn’t going to subject his mother to Astarion’s volatile temperament. 

“Morning, Gale,” the woman behind the counter yawned. 

“Good morning Iris,” he smiled at the bookseller. “Early morning?” 

“We’ve had a hoard of students, mostly young mages and sorcerers descend on this place like mindflayers at an all you can eat brain feast,” she yawned again. “Spent most of the night setting things to sorts again.” 

“If you’d sent word I would have gladly come to assist,” he told her. “Anything to get out of the palace is time well spent.”

“And have you get into a pissing match with one of the instructors?” she raised an eyebrow. 

“That was one time, and he started it,” Gale crossed his arms over his chest. “Not my fault they’re a bunch of idiots.” 

She smiled. “It was alright for the most part, the new owner has been a much better help. I never met Lorroakan, but he sounds like a dick.” The tiefling turned and walked over to the large cabinet behind the counter and took a small key from around her neck to unlock the door. 

“Right...Lorroakan,” Gale tried not to wince. “I’ve heard much of the same.” 

“Here we are,” she returned and set down a small stack. 

“Iris…this is, five books…I ordered one,” he told her. 

“It is one book,” she replied. “Split into five smaller volumes. Oh,” she went back to the cabinet. “Nearly forgot. Its own translation guide.” She dropped it on top. 

“...You didn’t think to mention this when I was placing the order?” He ran a hand through his hair. 

It wasn’t that he couldn’t manage the books on his own. A simple portal would solve that issue, but it was still four more books, plus a translation guide, more than he’d been expecting. 

“You didn’t ask,” she shrugged. “What do you need these for anyway?” 

“Just something I read made a small reference to this, or these anyway, and I got curious,” he answered. He picked up the translation guide and flipped through it. Picked up one of the books and looked through it.

Reading Midnight Sun: Chapter 11

Edward gives a lift to school to Bella the next morning. For the first time, we have Edward being somewhat attracted to her.

The fabric had clung to her skin in such an appealing way, cut low enough to reveal the mesmerizing shape of her collarbones, curling out from the hollow of her throat. [...]  It would be a monumental mistake to dwell on the strange hungers that thoughts of her lips… her skin… her body… were shaking loose inside me.

That’s quite interesting. It doesn’t sound very sexual to me, in fact, in sounds almost more like a predator salivating at his next meal. No shade to the guys with a neck kink out there, but it doesn’t sound very… carnal.

Edward then guilts Bella because she doesn’t tell him her every thought. When Edward explains he is done following the rules (well, we know those are laws enforced with the death penalty for all involved, but shush), 

My answer should have been mildly frightening—so of course, Bella smiled at it.

See, Edward spends his time monologuing about having Bella be scared of him, but then he spends an inordinate amount of time trying to get her to not be scared of him, only warning her verbally. He hasn’t explained to her, or shown her, how dangerous he is. All tell, no show, as they say. It's almost as if he doesn't really want to scare her.

Jessica learns Bella and Edward are dating, and begs Bella for juicy details (which, fair enough, I would do the same in her place, but Edward is really judgy, as if he doesn't do the same thing with Alice and her gift). Right before the interrogation, Edward of course tells Bella he will be listening in. Because God forbid she had privacy to gossip with her friend or talk about her feelings…

I laughed out loud at one moment during Bella and Jessaca's conversation. At some point, Jessica expresses how lucky Bella is to be with Edward, because of how handsome he is. Bella then gets upset because he has more facets than that to his personality. Hw shallow of Jessica to think about his appearance. Of course, I wonder what Bella would know about his personality, since they had barely a few conversations, most of which were Edward being cryptic or trying to figure Bella out. You don’t fool us, Bella, we know from Twilight how Edward’s appearance is his most important attribute. Even when Jessica asks what's more to him, she answers “I can’t explain it right,” she finally said. “But he’s even more unbelievable behind the face.” Don’t lie. You’re really horny. It’s fine. We’ve all been there.

Bella and Edward really are two hypocrites.

They sit together at lunch, and their following conversation is how the family learns Bella knows (aka that they could be executed by the Volturi Kings).

Luckily, they’re at school, so Rosalie can’t key his car. I kid you not, that’s what Edward thinks about the situation.

Edward then condescends and explains how it’s impossible she feels a fraction of what he feels for her.

But she couldn’t honestly believe that her human feelings, the fruition of seventeen short mortal years, could be stronger than this demolition ball of emotion that had wrecked me after a century of emptiness? 

Edward strokes his ego counter: 5 (it should be higher but I forgot I had this counter. Whoops)

I mean, at this point she doesn’t know how alone Edward had felt over the years. For all she knows, Edward has a side chick at every high school he goes to. It's not like Edward told her he loved her yet.

And then Edward gets upset about it ! When he was the one eavesdropping ! He blames her because she knew he was eavesdropping. What kind of victim blaming is that !

(He follows by calling Bella perceptive about the fact she noticed Edward is trying to say goodbye, which is why she's insecure. Hello, Edward you literally said that out loud).

They both confess how they think they think they like the other more than the inverse. This is so awkward when you remember all of Edward’s family can hear.

Across the cafeteria, Rosalie’s complaints were gaining in volume rather than dwindling.

Bella asks to be the one to drive to Seattle. Of course, Edward can’t just accept, he asks her to justify herself, when she already made clear she hates his speeding, because it’s illegal and dangerous (silly Bella).

I rolled my eyes at her. “Of all the things about me that could frighten you, you worry about my driving.”

Edward strokes his ego counter Edward is a condescending douchebag counter : 6

Their conversation goes on and on and on and I don’t understand how nothing can be said yet they can be so long. Essentially it goes

Edward: You should be afraid of me

Bella: No

Edward: (How brave of her) You are such an idiot

Rosalie: (You’re an idiot !)

Conclusion

Edward is really trying to make Bella fit into a box. Every time he sees her deducing anything, even if it’s obvious, he puts it in his “Bella is perceptive” box. However, he doesn’t take note of every time she isn’t, which confirms his bias. It’s annoying.

Also, why is Edward so condescending all the time ! It feels like SM was trying for a Pride and Prejudice situation, but since Bella never actually gets angry like Elizabeth ever does when Mr. Darcy acts really rudely, Edward doesn’t actually want to become a better person. And Mr. Darcy respected Elizabeth’s boundaries.

Could Bella do that ? No, she couldn’t. Because Elizabeth doesn't fall for Mr. Darcy's good looks or his money. In fact, she rejects him because she believes him to bad a bad person. She falls for his character once she gets to know him.

There was a "ask the author" type post going around that you reblogged and I said I was going to get back to ask a question but I'm sorry I forgot -_- SO, to make up for that, how are your current writing projects going? Are there any you're not having fun with? Any that you are having fun with?

That is so kind of you, don't be sorry at all! If I'm being honest, my current writing projects are probably not technically "going well" - but at least I can say it's not their fault! I spent a good chunk of this month sick & getting over it, and then that set me back on work things (and a bunch of computer issues I really did not need right now 🙄), so I've been playing catch-up a lot lately in what would've been my free time, and it really feels like September's just passed me by. I haven't been putting a ton of time into working on writing lately but in the snatches of time I have had, I've definitely been having fun with it.

As usual though when I'm not close to finishing one specific thing there's a few I'm alternating between without much focus - two 6b-era one-shots (one a shortish reunion story, the other a mission dealing in fixed points), a proposal fic (I noticed I had A Lot of proposal-based wips, some of them quite short/close to completion, and I figured I should prioritize finishing some every now and again so it doesn't get to the point where I like, exclusively post proposal fics for a year), and one that's a get-together fic centered around dancing (for some reason, dancing is something I have a ton of ideas/headcanons based around for Two/Jamie and even 60s who in general, but they don't always take the form of something narrative enough for a fic, so I definitely want to take advantage of this one that does).

And aside from those, I'm low-key always working on my Human Nature AU (& have been for so long I almost called it by the fic name instead of the real episode, whoops) but it's set during the fall and so every fall I get like an extra burst of motivation & excitement about it - and the weather's just been starting to change so I've been getting lost in that one even more than usual recently.

HOWEVER. She is now the perfect person for this story because everyone thinks shes a good person but she definitely isn't.

Finally finding and watched a documentary on Larry Ray. His sentence was announced yesterday and when the news reported how he moved into a college dorm and started a cult, my mother and I both were like “huh? How?”

It’s kinda weird how it all went down. I question everything and quickly get annoyed with rhetoric, and my general disdain for authority (especially when shit isn’t lining up) means I’m less likely to fall for a cult, but I do have a low key obsession with cults (definitely not writing a story on ao3 about cults or anything what do you mean????) so hearing that piqued my interest. It was hard to find stuff on YouTube because for some reason none of the true crime girlies picked it up (oh, I forgot; they only do videos on “evil women” or when women are brutally murdered, and none of that happens in this. Whoops, silly me) and the only clips were from during the trial as info was coming out, which would have left me to try to piece the story together and that’s too much work for me on a Saturday.

Anyway, peacock had a documentary on it that at least helped me make sense of it. Someone at the end remarks that his abuse was mostly outside of the college dorm and that even if the school kicked him out it wouldn’t have really stopped him as the students followed him when he went off campus. Considering the time lines, I think at least two or three people would have been spared due to not having access to his insistent love bombing in the beginning, but it wouldn’t have stopped everything yes.

They’re asking why he did it. This man was in some high places before this. He introduced Rudy Giuliani to the former leader of the Soviet Union back in the 90s, and was such close friends to the nypd commissioner back then that he was the BEST MAN in his wedding. He had ties to mobsters, and was an informant in a scheme that took down members of some of the most well known crime families in New York. The dude had connects.

But after getting indicted for his own part of the scheme, he was a no one. His connects wanted nothing to do with him. And so he sees these bright young students whom he can impress and influence the way he used to with more important people? He’s going to take that. If he can’t be powerful the way he was before, he’s going to take it where he can; plain and simple. He’s not some mastermind; he’s a white guy who knows how to butter people up. And people who like yes men will let a man like that near them especially if he has connects to help them look good. And the kids he manipulated were young and vulnerable. It wasn’t anything special about him: he just knew how to play someone.
