So i decided to repost the original sketches [plus one i thought was appropriate to put with these, since its got a butt i put it under the cut] and delete the cringe original post- since it didn't get any notes anyway- after cleaning them up/adding a block of color behind them [plus me toying with demon wwx's colors] so i hope you enjoy them!! More about the fic under the cut :D

“Clash of Immortals” / COI is an upcoming project I’m super excited about with Demon WWX and Angel LWJ. I use my own version of hell/heaven for this, allowing for lots of fun details and some creatures unique to my universe, including A-Yuan who is a “Garden of Eden” [not drawn yet].

Information i can share!

Demon WWX / Wei Wuxian - Demon type: A black-blue feathered “Captive” or “Fallen” - a type of demon caused by cutting an angel’s ascension short as they are being lifted into the heavens, caused by demons trying to prevent as many new angels from entering heaven as possible. This means originally he was supposed to become an angel, but his line was cut and he was dragged past hell’s gates, causing him to descend instead of ascend once he passed through the gate.

This leaves a nasty scar on his back from the hook used to pull him up [if ascended the hook will disappear harmlessly] and this is why they are also nicknamed "Hook Demons" as they will sometimes even go around with the hook still in their back, just filed down, because they are going through a vital area and can't be fully removed.

Angel LWJ / Lan Wangji - Nearly a white wing, shares a nearly identical wing color to LXC, His is white with minimal jade undertones; he has MANY piercings to compensate his abilities in order to prevent his body from tearing apart. He does however have a unique trait- two of his flight feathers [one on each side] are completely black [I will test this with his design so don't hold me to this]. After his descent heaven is a bit perplexed- they allow this type of movement but LWJ is a very important for heaven’s force of angels, as one of the most powerful.

Fun Facts ;]

When they see each other for the first time as angel/demon they bristle, [in my universe, angels and demons feel wrong when in each other's presence, even if they're very soft and sweet. It'd probably be a good mirror to how LWJ and WWX don't necessarily get along in the actual series when they first meet too.] but then it’s a cheery reunion- LWJ might be somewhat uncomfortable, but WWX tames the sensation more easily as he is nearly unrestrained in power.

Someone comes within 50 feet of A-Yuan and Wei Wuxian sends the person’s heart to their throat just by looking at them despite this being a bad habit he probably shouldn’t use around the "Garden of Eden."*

*original species invented which will be explained better in story, I don't wanna spoil too much

and then we have "BED" HABITS

WWX is aggressive as all hell with everyone else besides his kind [in hell anyway bc he doesn't like everyone's attitude] -not in an intimate way he wouldn't do anything with anyone else- but becomes tame with LWJ, it's like a switch gets flipped. LWJ is the growling demon in bed while WWX is the purring angel, despite their anatomy quite clearly showing otherwise; and let me tell u I love purring demons and growling angels

NO ONE believes him when LWJ says wwx isnt the aggressive one, thinking the demon is tainting their precious second jade despite wwx not having a choice about his demonhood. LWJ be like: we still husbands regardless of who's the more aggressive one anyway. Yes, I’ve just decided we’re still married no extra ceremony required.

Complaining About Fanart

Mwahaha I’ve tricked you this is actually an art appreciation post. But bc I’m in love and look at fanart all the time every day, I’ve noticed 2 main categories of comic! death of the endless fanart which are as follows:

6. This specific drawing by Ryan Kelly. Idk why but this one just scratches an itch in my brain.

7. Lisa Treiman, she’s feeling mischievous!!!! That’s the number 1 thing I look for!!!! And a little icky! The wings! The expression! Amazing.

So in conclusion I think I just like any drawing where she has a facial expression actually. And I’m definitely going to do a part 2 with Show!Death fanart bc there are so many artists who deserve so much love 🙏💕

Hey 👋🏾💜 Thank you for the kind words. Y’all need to stop gassing me up. My dad jokes/ corniness will know no end lol.

With my Twitter page, sometimes I question whether or not people think I’m stealing work from this Tumblr page bc both my pfp and handles are not the same 🥲 I made my twt before I made this side blog so the handle and pic was a quick “slap together” choice. The phrase “be f*cking for real” is too funny to me so I just ran with it. And then my brain was completely uncreative and was like “namor-shuri” will do rofl. Hopefully people understand by now that I’m the same person, but alas.

To answer your question, I think it’s broken up into two parts. One chunk of it is that I rant A LOT so this platform makes it easier for me to do so while also being creative with color fonts and all that jazz. I also just love the freedom of layouts and stuff like that. From a creative perspective, of course it doesn’t help that Tumblr messes with quality but what I lose in quality, I gain in possibilities [I swear I don’t work for Tumblr and this is not me promoting them rofl].

The other half of the pie is the stark difference of engagement on Twitter vs Tumblr, in my personal experience thus far. Like I said, I made my Twitter first back in late December of last year. It was kind of a random decision but once I realized I was super into the Namor x Shuri ship, I wanted to engage with the fandom more directly and pour into it. Since then, I’ve been able to have a lot of fun with making different artworks, edits, videos, playlists, you name it! Ya girl has been BUSY to say the least lol And what’s been dope is that this fandom has been a fun outlet outside of my professional artwork and stuff like that. All that being said, what slowly became apparent to me was that I wasn’t feeling as included or apart of the fandom as I initially hoped I would. I would try and engage with people or joke here and there and most of what I would get back was crickets, whether it would be on my own posts or my commentary on others. And to be fair, I know it takes time for people to get to know you and build community but it just felt slightly strange. Especially when I would see new pages pop up and everyone would immediately flock to engage with them. I say this to say that absolutely NO ONE owes you anything in life so to be upset that someone isn’t your friend [whether it’s in person or online] is a human experience but you have to understand that not everyone is going to jell with you. There are billions [billions? *does quick google search] of people on this planet. Someone is bound to hate you, while another will worship the floor you walk on. Someone’s going to think you’re okay, while you being your raw and authentic self makes another person’s day. It’s nothing personal. It’s simply a numbers game. So inherently I understood that but it still hurt the 3 year old in me that was just trying to make friends at the playground, you know? lmao But I think what set it off was when I would look up and then see my edits used for people’s banners, fan art, post ideas, etc without asking me or giving me any credit knowing that they also aren’t following me or even engaging with me in any way. It still wasn’t cool but I think what would have made the whole thing feel a little different is if I was more “in the group” but because I’ve been on the outskirts the majority of the time, it just made it sting that much more.

Then I started to get slightly paranoid and wondered if I was missing something. Did I do something wrong? Did I say something that was off? I felt like a message was being sent and that confused the hell out of me [and lowkey still does]. BUT SOB STORY ASIDE lol I brushed my shoulder off, switched gears and thought “f*ck it, let me make my own side blog and do my thing on there” and that worked for me! I got traction after that, people were responding to my stuff and throwing in their own ideas/commentary/analysis etc. I felt like I could engage with people more, even with the limitations Tumblr puts on side blogs. And just the whole vibe overall started to feel really f*cking good. The funny thing too is that I’ve noticed that a lot of Twitter is on here and vice versa so it’s the same folks but for some reason I think this platform has opened up more possibilities for engagement in my experience. Twitter lends to a wider audience than Tumblr unfortunately but I’ve accepted my humble abode on here.

This rant is getting super long so I’ll end with this; I have nothing against the Nashuri fam on Twitter. Just because I’m not necessarily apart of the “crew” doesn’t mean that I don’t find everyone hilarious or amazing in any way. If you think I’m funny anon, you need to read what these girls say because it is SUPERB *chefs kiss* The talent from artworks to fics to think pieces and everything in between is incredible and oozes from that community. But for me, I think I just haven’t found my footing or people over there and as much as it’s been a bummer, I’m still going to be on there to support the dope stuff that comes out of it. I also want to say that just because this has been my experience doesn’t mean it will be yours. I fully encourage you to branch out on different platforms and try and engage with as many people as possible [fandom or not]. I think I just got my finger burned once and immediately gave up rofl. One of the biggest blessings that have come out of the Nashuri fandom in general is it’s vast bipoc community. As a black woman myself, I haven’t experienced this level of inclusivity when it comes to race, gender, language, culture, ages etc in other fandoms. It’s beautiful and I will always be thankful for that.

I also want to drive home that everyone needs to find what works for them. You owe yourself that. If you feel like your aren’t getting what you desire out of Instagram, move to Twitter and see what happens. If Twitter isn’t cutting it, move to Discord. Move to Tumblr, you name it! I think that move for me made a HUGE difference and honestly made me feel better about being in this fandom in the first place. And also this just goes for life in general but just because you might not feel included somewhere doesn’t mean you or the place is a problem. You might just need some scenery change.

Ps: If you are in the fandom and are on Twitter, definitely hit me up and add me! I would love to be mutuals. I’ve seen some familiar accounts from Twitter add me on here and vice versa and it’s been really cool. I appreciate the blogs that engage with me on there and all that jazz. I’ve never had a Twitter before so I’m lowkey new to that world still but grandma’s getting the hang of it slowly but surely.

I introduced him over on my fandom blog @nbraraeaves when I first got him a while ago - as I think I mentioned in the plush guide I reblogged the other day, I got him from Meizai on etsy a couple years ago a while after I first started from sokovia with love. the coat and shirt he’s wearing are part of the outfit she custom-designed for him! the pants are some generic suit trousers I swapped in, and the boots are actually from a Loki cotton doll I ordered on ebay years ago without really knowing what it was (thus making him my first doll in this style).

anyway, onto this slapdash fashion show that I put together while no one came to my drop-in hour for work lmao 😂

1. I try to have a “casual” outfit for my plushies that travel with me a lot back and forth to my family’s place in TX, and Zemo is one that usually comes with just bc I never know when I’m going to get bit by the from sokovia bug again. I bought him this hoodie bc it’s purple, albeit a different shade from his main color, but I also just really wanted to see him in something cute and silly. (excuse my crooked bow, I’m still working on my technique)

Just modeling the hood up, with a different angle for the embroidered details one might miss on his enormous noble head.

2. I have a puffy pirate shirt that I bought specifically to give my different plushies their macfayden Mr. Darcy moment (minus water obvs), and on Zemo I always think of him being cajoled into posing for a traditional portrait by his parents, maybe when he’s still working his way up through the ranks of EKO Scorpion:

hey im an artist who DOES add a layer of flat color on multiply, and yeah youre kind of right. any tips on how to make an image actually look nicer?

i was talking about icon editors but it also kinda applies to art as well!!

this got pretty long so everything undercut!!

i don’t think using multiply is bad in itself you just have to be careful with it bc you can’t just pick one single color and use it everywhere, you should shange the hue and saturation depending on where you’re applying it, using the same color for everything can also make you run into the problem of the shading not being there at all

here is an example i made, i chose deliberately hard colors to shade with red which is what most people use

the first one just doesn’t look good you can’t see the shading in the darker parts and its too noticeable in the lighter parts, its also pretty much invincible in the shoes

in the second one i’m still using multiple but i used the slider tool to adjust the colors in different parts of the drawing, this is what it should look like:

while using it you have to bare in mind what type of shading do you want, a cooler one, a warmer one, etc. it helps the drawing look balanced

lot of people like using multiply bc it’s quick and easy!! and i completely understand that!! i personally think a drawing looks best if you pick the colors yourself since it gives a lot more life to the drawing imo

adding depth to the shading itself can also help your drawing look more lively for example this would be the flat shadows and next to it would be with darker shadows:

if my base color is already dark and the base shadow is also very dark i add a lighter color on top, i also make the base shadow larger and the add the darker shadows in the parts where the “sun” is less likely to hit

i really dislike how i did the shadow in the hair if i applied more time to it i would probably make the hair lighter the base shadow lighter and the darker shadow dark, sometimes adding shadows can make the base colors look bad or weird or they simply don’t work so don’t be afraid to edit them and make them lighter!!

here’s an example of my own art using this style of shading

imo i think the difference is pretty big!! this style is super time consuming so when i use it i only use it in certain parts of the drawing like the hair or very specific folds!! i recommend always keeping in mind that when you look at a piece of clothing if it has dramatic lighting there will be lighter and darker shadows everywhere and if you have a simpler lighting there still will be dark shadows but theyre more scarce

Do you ever run into color issues when doing digital art? I feel like sometimes when I look at it on a different screen the hue/saturation entirely changes.

yes 🥲 which is why I’ve been losing my mind at the color of Miserere’s hair recently.

Even when taking screenshots on my XIV the color and especially the brightness can wildly differ even though when checking monitors the color fidelity was supposed to be pretty good 😔 which is sad because I’ll take screencaps I’m really proud of then go to post on my phone or laptop and be like whyyyyyyyyyy and then have to edit them to be brighter or whatever. It also means taking refs of Asha and Aias is Kind Of Hell since they’re both dark skinned and obviously I don’t want them ending up too light in ref pics but what’ll end up happening is I’ll take pics that look perfect in preserving color while still being visible only to look at it on my phone or laptop when I’m actually linking ref pics and them looking wayyyyyyy dark making me have to be like “I promise I can take other ref pics if these are too dark” which is embarrassing and you think I’d learn to overcompensate regarding screenshots but it’s so hard bc sometimes it’s like. Okay you brighten it but now for some reason Aias looks less purple. Or too cool-toned or too warm-toned or the purple of his skin looks okay but his hair doesn’t appear the right shade of red

I know that my phone and laptop are similar-ish since screenshots show up similarly between them vs my PC monitor but I guess they aren’t actually that similar because of what’s been happening with Miserere’s hair 🥲 I think I once read something that said you shouldn’t trust ur phone screen for color bc most phones have some sort of vibrancy setting as default, but insofar re: reactions to hair color, my phone seems to displaying things the most “correctly”

on another note though, perhaps it’s just my own inexperience wrt art and color? Commissions usually look fine between screens so 😅 I dunno……..

but it’s one of the reasons I rly don’t like coloring 🫠 and practicing to improve ends up being a frustrating endeavor

1. What was the first element of your OC that you remember considering (name, appearance, backstory, etc.)?

Kai: The idea of him being That kind of “the traveler is evil guardians are the real monsters the darkness has a point actually” destiny player but like, in-universe. he’s kinda strayed further and further away from that as I’ve gone along, though (and bc of my view that those people are genuinely insufferable 9 times out of 10 in light of recent events)

Caoilinn: Her connection to the Light and the philosophy that Guardians are the Traveler’s champions who must only use it for good, which is also where her ties with the Praxic Order came from. Other than that her entire personality and history has changed from what I first came up with for her and I’m so glad I changed it

Ravan: Oh his backstory, definitely. Also their connection to Calus and his own hedonistic philosophy given that I had wanted for the buckaroos to have more of a connection to Calus than the phoenixes due to [redacted for fireteam phoenix story spoiler reasons]

12. What have you found to be most difficult about creating art for your OC (any form of art: writing, drawing, edits, etc.)?

Kai: Funnily enough, I have a lot difficulty drawing his hair. I can never get it to look right which is ironic considering that the mental image I have is him having permanent helmet-hair where it’s just going wherever. Also his writing so far has been tough to balance between “this is what he believes” and “this is what he wants people to think he believes” without being too obvious or hand-holding

Caoilinn: Similar to Kai, her writing is often somewhat difficult bc there’s such a disconnect between her own self-image and what she expects from other people/what others expect for her that it’s hard to get that subtext just right. Also her fancy armor is a pain in the ass

Ravan: THEIR COLOR SCHEME FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PLEASE HELP ME I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH HIM

14. If you had to narrow it down to 2 things that you MUST keep in mind while working with your OC, what would those things be?

Kai: 1) behind his edginess and contrarianism he actually is concerned for the people of the City, he just hates how Guardians don’t seem to care and think of themselves as above the masses 2) he is most definitely Not Straight he is a bisexual gray-ace fucking disaster

Caoilinn: 1) She is Not Normal. she is unhinged. makima chainsawman if she was even more cringefail 2) her zealotry/superiority complex stemmed from the need to believe in her own significance to avoid falling into hopeless despair from spending decades surviving alone on Mars. her beliefs are her own and not the result of others forcing them onto her unwillingly, although her ghost did have a hand in accelerating her reliance on such beliefs

Ravan: 1) His pronouns are what/thefuck/ever (/hj). go buck fucking wild and contradict yourself in every sentence. no cisgender in sight 2) xe is extremely fatalistic and insecure in their own power behind his debauchery which is how they seek to hide it. she’s not self-centered just to be self-centered, it actually runs a lot deeper than that

3. What is your writing ritual and why is it cursed?

I’ll be honest I don’t really have one rip… I don’t even really edit my stuff I just put it out there

4. What’s a word that makes you go absolutely feral?

I don’t have one of these either but I love the word onomatopoeia

6. What is your darkest fear about writing?

That it will be misunderstood, especially for the darker ones. I write to work through ideas and emotions, and the thought of being associated with something I hate bc I wanted catharsis or to understand it is horrifying.

7. What is your deepest joy about writing?

When someone asks a question I didn’t think of, and I learn more about the world myself trying to answer it, or it’s pointed out why soemthing worked when I didn’t know.

As a bonus, my favorite writing moment ever was a not very popular fic of mine made someone realize they were aro. They were adamant that I changed their life for the better and I’ve never really moved on from that.

9. Do you believe in ghosts? This isn’t about writing I just wanna know

I don’t know if I do. I mean I’d say no but there’s just something about them that lingers with me and won’t leave me alone. The idea that you can feel something so intensely it outlives you, that it’s eco is left… yeah. It feels right.

10. Has a piece of writing ever “haunted” you? Has your own writing haunted you? What does that mean to you?

Absolutely, and it’s my favorite kind of thing. When something haunts you, it’s like finding a secret room. There is suddenly this empty space in yourself you didn’t know existed, and it will never leave you, it just stays there and stays empty but with a sense of depth.

16. What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever used as a bookmark?

26. How do you get into your character’s head? How do you get out? Do you ever regret going in there in the first place?

I usually don’t have an issue bc characters can just be different facets of yourself. If I absolutely can’t tho, I’ll read something with really good characterization and go “oh THIS is what this characters deal is ok got it”

28. Who is the most delightful character you’ve ever written? Why?

The eye 🥰 TMA is so fascinating bc you’re SUPPOSED to want to see what happens next in fiction, but it catches you and calls you out. Writing them in bad situations, the eye is about watching people suffer for your own amusement. And the eye the way I write it in my tapesx fics is a mix of shaking characters in a jar and putting them in a doll house and loving on them. The way we talk about loving characters is fine bc it doesn’t affect them, but if it DID then the eye would be acting similar to how fans act to fictional characters.

32. What is a line from a poem/novel/fanfic etc that you return to from time and time again? How did you find it? What does it mean to you?

I know that love does not equal good, I know complex relationships with hurt people. I know a lack of choice can be a comfort.

When I was 13, covert incest between me and my dad started, and I didn’t realize what it was until I was almost 18. He was neglectful and we didn’t have food a lot of the time, and had depression and I had to take care of him. He was also very sexist racist ect ect ect and didn’t believe in things like mental illness and gaslit me a lot.

I didn’t cut him out of my life until I was 21 , I drove down crying the whole time once a week for over three years.

He’s a kind guy who would give all his money and housing to a stranger to help. He is also a horrible father. Example: driving us down to a friends house bc she had a rapist there and he wanted to protect her. He put us in danger. He saved her.

He hurt me more than anyone in existence and I still have to go to therapy over it. He saved me and I saved him and he was the most important person to me in the world. These are all true things at the same time.

What I know is that love is good, but it’s also a chain, and if the thing on the other side is determined to drown it’s tempting to try and save them, but it only drowns you too.

It’s why I love stories about non consensual domesticness and other such things, because I drove myself down there for years willingly while miserable, I took care of him without prompting when it hurt me, and the idea of it not being complicit in my pain is comforting. If it’s something that happens to you, then it’s not a choice you made to stay.

And it goes the other way too. Sometimes you want to do something because you love someone, and sometimes, even if its what would be better for them, you have to respect their choices. My dad didn’t want help, and trying to give it only hurt.

This was very long and depressing, but yeah. I like to explore what love does to people outside of warm feelings, and how they get there, and the effects of making decisions for other people, and the pitfalls being two different people create and how to navigate them. A lot of my stories go “this is the problem, how do you work around it without getting rid of it entirely?” And usually end pretty ok love wise bc they find a way to actually communicate and fix themselves and compromise.

anyhoo, I have a story. I once saw a tiktok about a kaeya art. it was specifically labeled “IN PROGRESS” or whatever so you knew the artist wasn’t done. it was a gorgeous piece of art btw. So far, the only thing that had been colored was his hair and some of his clothes.

pretty much everyone in the comments started harrasing her about how he was whitewashed and the artist had to be a white supremacist and i think someone said “see I knew everyone who played genshin was racist just delete the game at this point.”

i was just like 😳 wow jeez it’s literally IN PROGRESS the artist legit said so.

the artist eventually posted the final version (after having to delete the first video and deal with several threats) it did turn out beautiful, but on the comments there and on every post of theirs after people are lurkign in the comments bad-mouthing them.

as much as I definitely am for characters not being whitewashed (especially Kaeya bc I love him your honor) I think some people take it way too far when the person they’re yelling at literally just wanted to get people excited about their WIP.

if there's one thing i noticed about the genshin community on tiktok and twitter, it's that there is a whole, whole lot of social justice warriors and overall it's extremely toxic. it's something that surprised me because the people i interact with on tumblr are all super sweet and not one bit toxic so? idk, tumblr is just a different breed i guess

your story is extremely saddening. everytime there's a kaeya fanart, people forget about the color theory and the artists' style and claim it's whitewashed and i genuinely don't understand why. if someone could explain it to me, am i missing something? im not an artist so perhaps im mistaken, idk, but i've never seen a fanart where kaeya was whitewashed.

the thing that pisses me off the most is that most of the time it's white ppl calling something whitewashed. i'm not saying you shouldn't call out racism if you see it just bc you're white, just that these people aren't even right - and often you see poc coming into the debate and explaining it's not whitewashed/saying it doesn't bother them. moreover, i've literally seen fanart of beidou as a black girl, which isn't representation in my opinion - beidou is already a poc, and asian people need at least as much representation as black people, so it's plain racism. same thing with kaeya, i've seen edits of him with stereotypical african features, and it's really sad that no one is calling this out but yelling about whitewashing as soon as he isn't the exact same color as the official arts. hell, someone even said "so what if it's darker? it's still whitewashing" and i??? am flabbergasted. whitewashing is absolutely disgusting, but ppl keep misunderstanding what it means and just using it to gratuitously harass artists.

now, don't get me wrong. i believe that you can draw whatever you want. but the thing is - if you get mad when someone draws kaeya white (if they really do, i mean), you can't just applaud someone else's that draws another character black. racism goes both ways, and it's bordering on fetishism. i, as a poc (mixed-race, caucasian + african), am extremely uncomfortable everytime i see this double-standard.

but anyway, the fact remains that sjw have plagued the genshin fandom. and it's not just about kaeya's skin color (we don't even know if he's really a poc - we know he's tan according to paimon, and i believe she called him "exotic"? so idk) but also about the ships. everytime i see a shippy tiktok, there's plenty of ppl out here saying it's wrong, claiming their own ship is the most canon. if i'm not mistaken, kaeluc is the one that gets the most hate, and i genuinely, once again, don't understand why.

i talked about them before and explained how it's not incest bc they really aren't brothers, but i swear every now and then i see people throwing death threats and slurs anytime someone hints at them. idk if you are familiar with the eng va's fandom, but sometimes they play among us together, aether's va does some livestreams where he invites different voice actors. but diluc's va is never there, and i was wondering why - recently i learned that it's because he retweet a fanart of kaeya and diluc fighting alongside each other (not even a shippy fanart, apparently) and people harassed him and excluded him from the fandom. and now the same thing is happening to griffin burns, childe's va, bc he retweeted (or liked, idk) a fanart of lumine and childe fighting or something and people called it pedophilia bc lumine would be a minor. i'm not even gonna dive into this bc the travelers are canonically like 30 times childe's age, but what i mean is - people are so full of hate and i can't fathom living like this?

the point is, i totally respect anyone who doesn't ship something i ship. i myself don't like certain ships - like zhongli/xiao, jean/diluc - but im not gonna harass ppl who do just because i can? that's messed up, i just don't get it. i wish the fandom wasn't that bad bc i really enjoy this game

my process is very tailored for speed instead of quality (oops soz LOL) so i do suggest this for if u have short doodle breaks ⬇️⬇️⬇️

thumbnailing (for comics) -> lines (sketch who?) -> bucket tool/color drop in the base color -> color in the lines -> one multiply layer for a “base” shadow (in the vid below its purple!) -> one (1) render/paint layer a.k.a lawless no man’s land

full rendering process & more general painting tips below the cut‼️

NOTE: i’ll be focusing more on traditional/fundamental tips for stylized art because i’m sure there’s a much more effective way in digital. I truly do only use one normal layer for render... i think this is bc before i made this blog, my only prior experience in drawing is middle school art class, so all i know is traditional painting on one layer.... pray i can answer this again in the future with something smarter lmao

🌺 MY PAINT PROCESS

1. Choose a color scheme!

It doesn’t have to be set in stone like below, but i at least keep in mind the color range i’d like to use depending on what i want to convey (ex. soft pastels for soft fluff, or warm colors for happy vibes). I try to be as limited as possible for base colors because I tend to go ham when painting, you’ll see later AHAHA

2. Base coloring + Base shadow

Base -> bucket tool in the color scheme (I know other artists are against this but when i discovered the bucket tool in digital art I immediately divorced manual coloring i’m sorry i loved you tho bae) (this is why my style and lines are simplistic as they are, so the color drop works!)

Base shadow -> in theory, warm-colored light creates cool-colored shadows and vice versa. because i’m a fluff addict i mainly use warmer light, so i like using blue/purple as the shadow. generally u can’t go wrong with complementary colors!! (yellow light & purple shadows / orange light & blue shadows).

I make a new multiply layer (decreased opacity just bc i like things soft okay) and clip it on the base layer, then block in the areas i think would get blocked from the light.

3. Color in the lines!

for simplistic styles i swear this works wonders. i just clip a layer to the lineart and manually color the lines with a darker but more saturated version of the base color. it just tends to look more dead i guess with low saturation lol (ex. u can see above i use both peach and red or pink for lines of skin, i guess it implies the blood under the skin too. or something :D)

4. RENDERRRR

when i’m not in a rush i just paint things completely (and mindlessly), but here are the things i almost always do:

line the shadows with a saturated color! i’m not sure this is common but i love it lol, in almost all my doodles just check the shadows—on the edges, there’s bound to be a wild color :D (usually its the light color, shadow color or a color scheme color but sometimes i’m just like boY do i loVe piNk)

my art major friend told me about saturated colors on desaturated bases and my life was changed forever lol. u can see below even when my base is very grayyy, my rendering is very gay :D ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜

make the shadows darker where i think they should be darker. usually i can just colorpick from that darker, saturated lineart color!

if it’s a more realistic piece i usually make the highlights lighter, but in simple doodles i find it unnecessary, and i dont like how light/white it looks :( i tend to just make the areas exposed to light more saturated

color in the rebound light~ in reality there’s usually not only one primary light source, at least there’d be secondary light from where light bounces off objects. in art we just emphasize that! so in large shadow areas, or in areas close to other objects/colors, i like to ‘splash’ other colors on

yeah this part is less intuitive for beginners and u have to learn a grasp on the concepts over time, like for lighting and structure. values can be more important than color, so i do suggest learning shading first before coloring, but only if u like (u can always be like me and just pull up references when u dont get how the light would fall on some materials :>). i have more general paint tips below! don’t give up okay, i believe in u nons, we’re all still in the eternal learning process together ( •̀ᄇ• ́)ﻭ✧

5. OOOOHHH SHINY ✨🤩

this step is just me being mesmerized by how easy it is to play with lighting in digital. i play around with the layer settings (multiply for shadow, overlay for light, and often try out the other settings too!). my favorite effect is the highlight glow thing, where u just make a copy layer of the highlights below the original layer, and blur it slightly so it looks like glow ✨✨🤩 overpriced acrylic could never

6. COLOR ADJUST / EDIT

Truthfully i usually skip this step, but my more pro friends really vouch for it!! i think definitely an incredible thing with digital is that u can edit proportions and even color after you’re done. i think they usually use like the curves adjustment layer in photoshop until they get colors they like, but for me, well, in a reaally diligent day i like to slap on the “auto” fliter in the iphone’s photos edit button lmaoooo

🌺 GENERAL PAINTING TIPS

learn basic theory: i think theres free courses everywhere online, but heres a few things u might like to have a basic understanding of: color, perspective, shape language, lighting, composition. don’t sweat it too much tho, it should be fun to explore the concepts!

and for drawing hoomans: proportion, gesture, expression, and veery basic anatomy. i find that overall forms are so much more important to learn than like detailed anatomy bc u can always look it up lol

but remember, u mostly want to learn the rules so u know better ways to break them :)

Definitely occasionally runs on all fours, it's usually not for too long though.

Most of the time it’s momentarily while she's already in the middle of sprinting, to give herself a boost with a bound or two, or if she trips or feels herself falling forward while running she'll shift onto all fours which is is how she originally developed that "reflex", to prevent herself from falling while running, but eventually she started using it a little more often 

She can also just walk normally on all fours too but she usually only uses it while running 

She likes to show off her object collections to Mono, he’s very supportive :] Loves long car rides, as well as Runaway

Brings mono gifts (usually dead rats, birds, etc. or bizzare objects from her collection that reminded her of him for whatever reason)

Hi

I'm not up to date with all the drama in this fandom bc i tend to scroll past it. But being a reader of the books before I landed in these fandoms, I'm utterly shocked about how people treat eachother.

I'm very neutral on this stupid ship war going on. I tend to fall more for Elriel. But I understand everyone's opinion. I used to read all the book analysis, but now it just seems so exhausting. I get that people love books and ship different people. That's normal, everyone has different taste etc i'm just here trying to understand why we need to bring other human beings down in order to push our own narrative.

Since when is it okay to do that???? Can't we have a normal conversation without sending death treats?

I normally don't really respond to anything that involves drama. But these last couples of months have gotten me to dislike the books more and more solely because of these, may I call them blandly, horrible people.

And i'm very sad to have to admit that i'm also getting sick of the art of the multiple ships. Which that's horrible because I love what all these amazing artists create. But the hate they receive and the comments just make me hate it all more,this whole fandom with all these toxic people ruining it for me personally.

Can't we all just agree that we like these books, and respect eachother as human beings, no matter what everyone else thinks? And maybe wait and see what the author writes? In the end it are still her books and she will have the final say in everything.

I wish SJM would release the next book sooner so all this hate would stop, then again i don't know if it will stop. They will likely continue and probably bother SJM too...

Hello! Thank you for this message! I think it's really helpful for people to see because they can see the impact of the things they are doing and saying in the fandom. There are a lot of people who feel comfortable being vocal in the fandom, but I gotta say, if I were just joining now, I'm not sure that would be me. I wonder how many people walk in, take a look around, and walk the fuck back out. I probably would.

I got on my soap box a little bit because I was thinking about some of the things you've said!

I was just talking with some friends, some of whom I've been in the fandom with since 2017, some who are newer. And we all 1000% agree with you. It's so, so frustrating that the fandom has gotten so nasty to the point where we've become so separated from each other that we can't have a single civil conversation. Where people of color don't feel safe, and where a lot of the fandom doesn't even seem to care about that.

When I first joined the fandom, there were definitely people who shipped one way and people who shipped another, but we were still able to have conversations with each other. There would be these really, really long posts that were chains of people commenting on posts and reblogging, then someone adding on their thoughts, then op would respond, etc. Yeah, the posts were super long to scroll through, but there was so much engagement, ya know? And it was genuine, too. We could disagree or say "hey OP I like this point, but have you thought of X?" And it was great! (I even have a tag for it, #long post tag, because I once got an anon who was annoyed at how long my conversations with people would be 💀so I made that tag for people who wanted to block those posts.)

I'm not going to pretend it was perfect - there were definitely people I didn't get along with. But that wasn't a fandom thing, that was just a personality thing. And I never in a million years expected those people to fly off the handle and start attacking me anon, or to ss my posts to make fun of elsewhere. Now, that's a constant fear hanging over everyone's heads.

It has created an extreme echo chamber. I would genuinely like having those old fandom discussions where people would comment - in the open, on reblogs - and then we could all engage in that discussion in public. Now, all of that discussion happens in private, in groupchats and Discord. And don't get me wrong, Discord is super fun. But it also means that 1) people who aren't in those groups have no idea wtf is going on when we vague, although I try not to do that anyway, and 2) when people are in those groups they egg each other on to be worse and worse. Worse than they would have been if they were on their own and didn't feel like they had a group of people there to support their asshole behavior. tbh, I have to check myself sometimes and think, "would I do this if I hadn't just gotten into a rant conversation with friends on Discord?"

And what you said about fan art, it's so frustrating!!! Since when did fan art become a battle ground??? Since when did the appearance of fan art = a win for one ship or the other?? Why can't the comments of those arts ever just be nice and appreciative of the work someone has put into it? Honestly, it makes me paranoid to write fanfic, too! I mean, is that next???

I totally agree with you that we should be able to respect each other as people. We used to be able to do that. I hate to admit it, but I have so many people blocked now because I just don't trust them. I don't trust them to be civil, I don't trust them to be able to see my posts, I don't trust them to even read what I've written without misconstruing everything I've said.

I'm not sure if people realize that there is a big difference between this:

I don't like X ship

And this:

People who like X ship are delusional

The first one is okay! It's normal! Like you said, we all have feelings and interpretations and stuff we would prefer to see or not see!

The second one, not okay! Stop insulting people, people!!!!

The idea of engaging in a normal, healthy debate with a huge portion of the fandom is such a foreign concept to me at this point, and it never used to be. There could be a lot of reasons for this. And I always try to avoid pointing fingers because I know that not everyone is like that, though I'm sure I have slipped into that from time to time.

I think it would help if we stop seeing each other as a gwynriel or an elucien or an elriel, and start seeing each other as individuals. When acosf first came out, I started noticing a trend where people would send me asks and write them as if they were writing to every single person who ships elucien, or as if they were writing to every single person who holds a certain opinion about Azriel. It was really confusing at first, and I'm gonna request that the fandom stop doing that altogether, to everyone. If you want to engage with someone, engage with that person, not your idea of who they are and what they think.

I'm down for conversations where we talk about the series and what might come next as possibilities, because that's all this is, so far. Anyone who says that "X thing will never happen" is making some bold claims, and it's really off-putting to people who know that that's not why we are here. It's not a contest where we "win" canon. It's fandom, where we talk about what we like and what we don't like and what we want and cross our fingers and hope.

EDIT I wanted to add on one thing - a lot of this behavior is incredibly shocking and disgusting and I think that we, as a fandom, need to be better at 1) calling it out, and 2) not assuming that whoever did X horrible thing represents all people from that corner of the fandom.

Anyways, possible reference for my... sona? not sure whether she’ll stay my sona or not, she almost feels more like her own oc now, but we’ll see. In the meantime, I decided to project heavily, partially bc hey, it’s Disability Awareness Month, and lord knows I need to get comfortable w accepting that applies to me.

Design notes under cut:

-I don’t think this is v obvious out of context but - she’s actually not looking at anypony in the face here! She’s too short to be looking at anypony at that vantage point. I definitely Cannot look people in the eye/face but fail to ever acknowledge that with sona art, so I wanted to try to change that.

-In my case, I need my cane because both legs were injured at the knees and are prone to pain from overuse. In Inferno’s case.... Maybe a general fatigue/chronic pain deal? I’m trying to sort out if there’s a more literal way to translate a cane for (back leg) knee issues on a pony, but idk.

-Some of these details aren’t final, depending on whether she stays a sona or becomes a self-projecty oc- such as the white streaks (bleached from stress, natural but not Natural) and the white chest marking (loose reference to a scar I have, but more fun and swirly). That said I may not keep them anyways, because I find simpler oc/sona designs make it easier to return to drawing them, and I don’t want to make her inaccessible for me to draw when I need something quick.

-A last note, in case this does stay her up-to-date reference- the color treatment is mostly stylistic. Her pupils are black, her bangs the same color as her mane, legs and body one color.... But I really try to push the idea of her colors being glowy like an ember, without *actually* glowing, so I like to get a little creative.
