"Come on, it's not that bad!" You smiled, pushing at Spencer's shoulder as he took a sip of your coffee, face screwing in disgust. "You're such a baby."

"No," He disagreed, voice hoarse as he handed you your coffee back. "That is disgusting."

"Just because it doesn't have about 3 pounds of sugar," You taunted, looking down at his mug with disapproval. "All that sugars gonna' catch up to you one day you know."

"Actually," He started and you felt yourself beginning to groan. "White sugar is a type of carbohydrate that provides energy to the body so what happens is the body breaks down sugar into glucose that can be readily used for energy and to carry out various functions. It improves brain functioning—"

"Spence, it's eight in the morning," You said, resting your forehead on his arm. "As much as I care about you, you are not allowed to go wikipedia on me at this time."

He stifled a laugh, glancing down at you with a soft smile. He took no offense to what you were saying since he knew your favorite thing was to listen to him. You pulled away, taking a sip of your coffee. You looked up at him, opening your mouth to speak but being abruptly interrupted as the kitchen door burst open, causing you to jump and stain your white blouse with coffee.

You looked down at the shirt, hissing in complaint. "Are you fucking—"

You turned, face twisted with anger. Spencer shrank at your demeanor looking over at the door to see who was about to receive the latter end of your anger. He took a sip of his own coffee when he saw  Derek standing by the door. The anger in you began bubbling even closer against the surface. "Really Derek?!"

Just as you were about to scold him even more for being such a brute at eight am, you noticed the features in his face laced with an all too familiar tensity. Realization dawned upon you. He started "Looks like we've got a visitor,"

You watched him, glancing briefly back at Spencer before setting your mug down. "And they're asking for you."

The case currently at hand, although pinching a little too close to your past then comfortable, wasn’t overwhelming you. It made you fidgety and a little more anxious than usual, sure, but you weren't overwhelmed by it. All it did was irritate you, how you always tried so hard to keep your past out of your present, and the present away form the past.

All you wanted, was to find the UnSub and move on. Still, you sighed heavily, popping out of the nice bubble Spencer and you had isolated yourselves in. You left your coffee mug long forgotten as you followed Morgan out of the room and across the hall, Spencer following very closely behind.

"A girl who barged in here, asking for you," Derek explained. You continued your stride across the hall, wondering who could possibly be asking for you. "She said she doesn't wanna' answer any questions until she's spoken to you,"

"Does it have to do with our recent case?" You asked, knowing otherwise but still hoping the answer was no. When Derek's lips pulled into a tight line, you sighed in disappointment letting your shoulders slump. Just as you rounded the main hall, you saw a familiar mop of red hair ranting at Hotch in a blazing fury. You froze in your tracks, almost causing Spencer to knock into you. You watched as she pointed her finger at Hotch, stress, and anxiety written all across her face.

"Claire..?" You said, voice barely above a whisper. All the anger in her face untwisted as she turned to you, her features suddenly soft and all too familiar. She hadn't changed a bit in the ten years you haven't seen her.

"Oh my god," She said, relief flooding her voice as she rushed over to you, pulling you into a tight hug. You remained still, not reciprocating the affectionate gesture as Hotch eyed you from behind her with a questioning look. You shrugged slightly at him, remaining completely neutral.

"I can't believe it," She said, voice soft as she pulled away, grabbing you by your shoulders. You noticed the eye bags and the panicky look in her eyes and suddenly things started clicking for you.

Back in high school, you, Easton, and Claire had been each other's rocks, always going everywhere together and relying on each other greatly. The three of you were best friends and you had been for all four years of high school. After what happened during and after your senior year, you fell out with the two of them and continued your advanced studies, not necessarily making any time to ever see both of them again.

Claire had always been the mediator in the trio. You always felt closer to her than you ever did to Easton. Claire always listened, and she gave the right advice when you needed it. You would've loved staying friends with her after highschool, but since she was so close to Easton, it remained impossible. You'd be lying if you said that seeing her again after all this time didn't tug at the strings of your heart in the slightest.

"You haven't changed a bit," You said, giving her a small smile. She did look the same, all of her sharp features still in tact the same way they were back then. There was a silence. She looked behind you momentarily and you turned, realization hitting you. "Shit, uhm—“

You turned, causing her hands to fall from your shoulders. "This is SSA Derek Morgan, SSA Aaron Hotchner and Dr. Spencer Reid,"

You introduced everyone, pointing at each of your co-workers referringly, to which each responded with a small nod or smile. Her gaze lingered on Spencer, who stood closely beside you. She smiled politely at them all, apprehension still laced in her gaze.

"It sucks that our reunion has to be under such shitty circumstances," She laughed, hugging herself protectively. The humor hadn't quite reached her eyes which caused you to shoot her an empathetic look.

"How are you holding up?" You asked. She opened her mouth to speak, but nothing came out. She sighed heavily, reaching up to cover her face with her hands. She shook her head.

"I cant believe any of it," She sighed, looking like she hasn't had a single ounce of sleep in days. "It seems like just yesterday she was coming back from her honey moon and now, she just—“

You felt for her, you really did. Even if you and Easton had your own history, you knew her and Claire remained great friends after high school. You didn't know they had still been friends after all of these years though. "Were you at the wedding?"

"I was her maid of honor,"

"We're very sorry for your loss," Spencer added. You looked over at him, smiling sadly and appreciating his efforts to be empathetic with her. You reached out, rubbing the side of her arm. She smiled at the two of you weakly. "I'm sure this is all extremely hard on you."

She reached up, rubbing her eyes rapidly, as if trying not to get sensitive in front of everyone. It was understandable, suddenly being surrounded by people she had no clue of, and losing someone close to you is not easy and it could be very overwhelming.

You looked over at Hotch before starting. "We're trying our hardest to figure out who could have done this to them,"

"Do you mind coming in for some questioning?" You asked. Claire looked over at Hotch apprehensively, clearly not approving of him.

"We think you can help us determine if there was anyone that may have wanted to intentionally hurt Easton and Michael—" You explained, trying to ease her up. "—And Sarah and Adam.."

She sighed heavily, nodding her head with acceptance "Yeah, that's fine.."

"I promise, we'll catch up afterward," You smiled as Hotch and Morgan guided her towards one of the interrogation rooms. You watched her intently as she walked away. With a beat, you looked down at your watch, huffing quickly and furrowing your brows.

"Must be hard for her," You stated. Spencer took notice of how unbothered you seemed, and he didn't skip out on calling you out.

"And what about you..?" Spencer asked curiously, shoving his hands into his pocket and staring you down from his spot next to you. You turned to him, tilting your head.

"What?" You asked.

He shrugged, looking to the side momentarily. "For a case hitting so close to home, it would be normal for this to affect you,"

You pursed your lips and responded truthfully. "It doesn't,"

Spencer looked you in the eye and did what he always tried doing when he suspected something was up with you. He tried profiling you, something that with time, you knew how to fight against, especially when it came from Spencer. His brows crinkled with a familiarity that was only present when he was worried about you. You reached up, rubbing your thumb against the furrowed skin of his brows and smoothing it out gently. "You worry too much."

"Haha." He shoved your hand away as you snickered to yourself. You were glad that with everything going on, you could still find the time to laugh. Spencer made that very easy.

"You," You reached up to link your arms with his as you began dragging him down the hall, all the way to Garcia's office. "Are going to accompany me to visit our lovely technical analyst,”

You watched as both Easton and Claire downed whatever drink it was they had in their hands, music blaring loud and people waltzing around intoxicated at every turn you made. Not completely sober, but not all that drunk either, you found yourself feeling as if yet another Friday night had gone to waste.

"Can you believe we're already seniors?" Easton cheered, throwing her hands around both you and Claire. You stifled a laugh at her slurred voice, knowing the hangover she was bound to have tomorrow was going to be brutal.

"This year is going to be absolutely insane," Claire said, excitement laced in every syllable of her voice. You rolled your eyes and cringed internally, swirling your drink in your hands and debating whether or not you should throw it out since you weren't really in the mood to drink anymore.

You knew you had to get a lot of studying done tomorrow because you were taking some advanced courses that would get you ahead of certain subjects, effectively allowing you to finish the school year earlier and begin your college studies ahead of time.

You had always been very different from Claire and Easton, but you had never seen a problem with it. Claire cheered you on whenever you decided to focus on school work rather than go out on a Friday night, claiming that she could never have your willpower, but Easton always teased you and pushed you to 'let loose'. Of course, you went out with them sometimes, but you also knew when to stay in and focus on yourself, and you never saw that as a crime. It was like enjoying the best of both worlds.

Although lately, going out with Easton felt more like a chore than something you genuinely enjoyed doing.

"Are we finally going to attempt to loosen Y/n up?" Easton shouted over the blasting music, pulling you into a side hug. You laughed awkwardly, a very small feeling of annoyance bubbling in your stomach.

"Oh shush Easton," Claire slapped the girl's arm, rolling her eyes indefinitely. "We know Y/n is going to rock it this year in her own special way."

"Shoving her face into a book isn't my definition of rocking your senior year," Easton added.

"Well shoving my face into someone else's twice a week isn't my definition of rocking my senior year, but you don't see me shaming you, huh?" You bit back, deciding to defend yourself rather than let her step on your toes for what felt like the fifth time this week. You and Easton worked like that. Sometimes it was complicated though, since it was hard to draw the line between teasing and passive-aggressive comments.

"Not my fault you're a prude," You sighed, crossing your arms as she let you go. That's the complicated line you were talking about. Claire shot a disapproving look towards Easton.

"I'm kidding!" She shrugged innocently, holding her hands up in defense. "But like seriously, isn't there anyone that sparks your attention? Not even a little bit?"

You sighed once again, knowing this conversation was popping up. Easton was a very 'out there' person, to say the least. She had a very bad habit of agreeing to hook up with any 'hot man' that breathed. And being part of a private school, everyone seemed to be connected to everyone, somehow. If someone didn't know your business, it was someone else's personal goal that they did, and so the story goes on. And for some peculiar reason, Easton was very vocal and passionate about the fact that you didn't throw yourself at anything that breathed.

"No Easton,"  You set your drink down on the small stool that was available right beside you, not in the mood to drink at all anymore. "Just like I said last time you asked me."

"What about Henry? He seems cool," She pursed her lip in thought. Claire's face twisted with disapproval.

"Henry's a total jerk," Claire warned. Easton sighed in defeat and began scanning the room attentively. You watched her, unamused and annoyed, up until her face popped with excitement.

"Wait a second," She said, reaching out for your arm and pulling you in closer to whisper. "What about the guy in white, over by the kitchen aisle that's practically drooling at the sight of you?"

You deadpanned at Easton but looked in the direction she pointed to anyway. As you looked over, your eyes suddenly fell on a man in a white-clad t-shirt, who was in fact, looking over at you with deep curiosity. You suddenly, for the first time in who knows how long, felt nervous under the gaze of a man. He smiled at you softly from the other point of the room, to which you uncontrollably returned and your heart flipped inside your chest. Just as you opened your mouth to protest, the man began making his way over to the three of you.

You had spent all afternoon skipping through file after file and picture after picture with Garcia and Spencer, while Hotch and Morgan interviewed Claire. Rossi, JJ, and Prentiss called you every few hours to dump more newly acquired information on the victimology report based on what they were seeing over at the crime scene. Your brain was practically about to melt out of your ears. The comfort of the conference room chair seemed overwhelming once you sat down, finally giving your back a break.

Claire had left headquarters just only a few hours ago which now left you all to lay out and create a new profile. Everyone sat at the table until Hotch and Morgan walked into the room.

"We've interviewed Claire Thomspon for more accurate victimology reports and further insight on our Unsub's possible motives for killing both pairs of victims," Morgan stated, rubbing his chin absentmindedly. "Claire declared that Easton had various romantic and sexual relations during high school and every relationship she started was as soon as she ended a previous one,"

"So enraged ex that most probably wanted revenge?" Prentiss said.

"But then what connection would Sarah and Adam have to the murders?" You asked, furrowing your brows in contemplation.

"His murdering methods reflect his psychological state and motivations. For example, if he meticulously plans and execute his killings with precision and calculation, which clearly isn't the case here, it could suggest a need for control and dominance, but since his methods are more frenzied and impulsive, it could indicate overwhelming emotions, and a lack of impulse control." Spencer explained, looking over at you. You nodded, glancing down at the file report and scribbling something across the side of it.

"Meaning Sarah and Adam could've just been collateral damage," You finished, looking back up at him from your seat across him. He nodded.

"If this is revenge, the Unsub may experience, intense feelings of powerlessness, and a need to exert control over others as a way to cope with his emotional pain. Slaughtering married couples could serve as a twisted form of retribution symbolizing the perceived betrayal and abandonment he experienced." Spencer continued, hands dancing around freely, something that always happened when Spencer talked on like this, he was very expressive with his hands.

"By targeting couples, he may be projecting his own feelings of envy and resentment towards those who have found happiness and stability in their relationships." You completed, giving Spencer a proud smile.

And this is exactly why Hotch thinks the two of you work best together, it’s as if your minds were synchronized and every blossoming thought was finished by the other.

"Do we have any leads?" JJ asked.

"We've asked Garcia to pull up some names of people who have a past with Easton." Morgan explained with ease, you looked down once again.

"That's gonna be a long list," You mumbled, low enough for anyone to hear.

It was true though. You weren't shaming her for sleeping around. It was simply a reality that she broke a lot of egotistical men and saw having sex with them as a way of feeling good about herself. You even heard her say once that 'men were just trophy's waiting to be collected by her'. It worked, she felt amazing about herself, and she truly had any man she ever wanted.

"So what would you say our profile is?" Rossi finally spoke up, being awfully quiet as he silently drew his own conclusions.

Hotch began. " We're looking for a 27-year-old male with an unremarkable, physical appearance, something that allows him to blend in with the general population."

You allowed yourself to think back on your past, dwelling if you remembered anyone that might fit the Unsub report.

"He maintains a fit or athletic build which helps him overpower his victims and he leads a relatively solitary existence, avoiding social interactions." He continued in a serious demeanor. "He exhibits narcissistic tendencies with a sense of entitlement, believing that he deserves attention or admiration. He's adept at manipulating others and his actions may be driven by impulsive, completely disregarding consequences, leading to reckless behavior."

"He also harbors a severe paranoia, showing irrational fears and suspicion leading to a heightened sense of vigilance and a tendency to see threats where non-existent." Morgan said, closing off as he sat back down into a chair. Rossi pursed his lips in thoughts.

That described about half of your class though— unfortunately. You rubbed your temples, lowering your head and processing the information, trying to rack your brain on anyone viable who gave you 'serial killer vibes' back in the day. You looked back up, and turned your gaze towards Hotch, opening your mouth to speak

"So wait, if our UnSub presents a lack of impulse control, couldn't that mean that he could strike again even if Easton is dead?" You asked. Hotch nodded and you felt your hands begin to grow clammy.

"We asked Garcia to pull out the names of the couples that have been married in the last year or so from the class of North Virginia High School,"

"How many married high school sweethearts are there in one graduating class?" Emily asked, looking over at you in disbelief. You leaned back in your chair and scoffed.

"Our class was compared to an orgy," You stated, an unamused stance settling your gaze. "That says enough,"

You couldn't even count all the people in your class that had either hooked up, had sex, got together or got married, with your two hands. You never understood what the desperation was at the time, apart from the raging hormones— and its not like your class was full of A-list celebrity lookalikes.

Easton had always wanted you to have your fair share of hookups with the guys in your class, but you had fortunately settled your low scale of bodies on a whooping number one. 

"So, we just—" Emily's brows were furrowed deeply. "—wait until our Unsub shows signs of attacking one of our couples?"

Everyone waited for an order. You didnt believe that was the smartest idea, because yet another two people could possibly end up killed if you didnt play your cards right. You felt uneasy as you waited for Hotch to put together a plan that you could all follow, but he even he was struggling to decide how to love on. Suddenly, Rossi's voice cuted through the air.

"No, that would be stupid." He hummed, narrowing his eyes in deep contemplation. "We need someone from the inside."

You stopped, peering intently at Rossi as you gave Morgan a quizzical look, slightly stupefied by Rossi's sudden intervention. He shrugged his shoulders at you, clearly just as lost as you were. Sometimes, it was hard to follow along with Rossi's thought process, which was surprising to say the least, since you completely understood Spencers.

"We could use you, as a decoy," He said, cutting his gaze over to you and pointing a finger. You froze in your seat, shrinking at the sudden call out. You choked on your own breath, being completely taken off-guard by him. Not because you didn't have it in you to go undercover but because—

"Uh—" You cleared your throat, coughing once or twice. "Sir, I'm not married..."

"Yet." Was all Rossi said.

You tilted your head, truly not getting a single word coming from this man's mouth "Come again?"

Everyone shared dumbstruck looks. When you looked over at Spencer, he was just as confused as you were. You shared a silent conversation but all you could answer with were confused shrugs. Hotch looked ahead, suddenly seeming to grasp onto Rossis implications.

"You mentioned Claire was still in contact with many of your ex-classmates, right?" Hotch asked. You pursed your lips, blinking slowly and turning to him.

"Uh, yeah, she mentioned something like that earlier—"

"So then you lure the Unsub in," He stated, explaining what Rossi's brilliant mind was getting at. You closed your mouth and narrowed your eyes just ever so slightly. "You and Reid go undercover as a newly wed couple, and you lure the Unsub in, making yourself the next posible target."

Your mind screeched to a halt as you straightened up in your chair. Suddenly, Spencer was heard choking on his own breath in his seat in front of you. You felt your minds racing hit a brick wall, silence and stillness hitting every fiber of your body. "You want me to—Huh..?"

You weren't even quite sure how to process anything that had just been said. Questions began dawning at you, because one, why you? And why Spencer? And why together— as a married couple?

"It'd be a complex operation, that would include meticulous planning but," Rossi suddenly pulled out papers and began scribbling down. "Comprehensive security measures would be implicated, and with Claire in the mix, you two can find ways to get yourselves to interact with the high schools graduate community and it's very probable that the Unsub, is baited in, especially with Y/n being an ex-classmate."

"Actually," Emily started, looking between you and Spencer, who both shared the exact, red painted look on both your faces. "Thats not a bad idea."

"Wait, wait— You want me, to go undercover as a married couple, with Spencer..?" You asked again. It all started slowly falling, like dominos. You finally allowed your minds gears to rear back into movement as you shook your head slightly.

"Yes,"

Pretending to be a married couple implicated everything being a married couple was. And Rossi was implying, that you pretend to be a married, romantic, madly in-love, head-over heels about each other, couple with— Spencer? Which meant living in the same house, sharing the same things, going everywhere with each other, hugging, touching, kissing, sharing the same bed?—

Okay, now you were overthinking it.

You felt a sudden patter in your chest, that traveled all the way to your skull and through your ears, pressing against your throat. You felt heat rush to your cheeks at just the thought of all of that, and if you weren't mistaken, you could've sworn you felt your stomach flip in circles.

Spencer was your best friend yet why did this feel so incredibly exposing..?

"If you think about it, Reid and Y/l/n would be the only ones able to convincingly portray a married couple..." JJ shrugged. You glared over at JJ wondering what the hell she meant by that.

Suddenly, things were moving all too quickly and all too suddenly. You dared yourself to look over at Spencer who was surprisingly, in the same shaken up state that you were. His cheeks were glowing red, and something in his gaze was silently speaking to you. You looked back at him, feeling an unfamiliar uncertainty begin to nip at you. You were too scared to speak up, and for the first time, you truly couldn't read a single thought behind those hazel eyes you had grown to care about so deeply.

"I—uhm," You said, voice hoarse and weak. "You really think this is a good idea?"

"I think it's our closest shot at catching this guy without anyone else getting hurt." Rossi stated.

"But we only do it if the two of you are a hundred percent willing to do so," Hotch reminded. You looked back at Spencer, not knowing what to think, or what to say, or what to do. His gaze relaxed, in constrast to your panicky one, and he gave you a small nod of encouragement. You swallowed thickly.

He looked over at Rossi, nodding slowly. "Okay, we'll do it."

im so sorry if this is rude, (or alr asked&answered), but may i ask why you are so team charlotte? dont get me wrong, i felt for her for most of the season, but i cant get over how she treated lewis and the girls after she became a mermaid. how can you support her after that? /gen

This is kind of a complicated answer, and this ended up being an essay, so for the sake of everyone’s dashes, I’ll put this under a cut.

I’d like to preface this with that these are just my opinions and how I view the show and how it comes across to me. I never hold it against anyone if they don’t like Charlotte for any reason. This is just my perception of the show and the characters.

Back in 2012, I did a rewatch of the show because I hadn’t seen it since I was a kid. I don’t remember how I felt about much of the show or even Charlotte in particular, I was more focused on how pretty the scenery was and the mermaidness of it all. But I hadn’t seen it in a while, I was about to graduate high school, and I was feeling nostalgic, so I decided to give it a another watch. I’d say it was around there that I started to notice some things that… didn’t quite sit right with me.

Now, I’m not ashamed to admit that a lot of my sympathy for Charlotte comes from the fact that I’ve been in her situation a lot: the one where you like someone and they don’t quite like you back the same way, but you’re too head over heels to care, and you’re willing to hurt yourself for the illusion. That’s where it started, but then I started looking at the season as a whole, with more of a storytelling eye.

I would like to preface this next part with a slight correction: I’m a Charlotte supporter, but I try not to make excuses for the more unforgivable things she does. She shouldn’t have bullied Cleo to the point she ran away, she shouldn’t have locked Emma and Cleo in the closet during the party, or stolen Lewis’s phone, to name a few things. Those are bad things she did, I’m not denying that or trying to handwave it away. However, I don’t consider her a villain or an abusive monster that most tend to. I approach the character of Charlotte Watsford by seeing the situation from her point of view, and realizing that what she does? It’s not dissimilar to what the other characters do, the only difference is that we give them the benefit of the doubt, or see things from their point of view, or realize that they’re teenagers, of course they’re not going to be making the best decisions.

And Charlotte Watsford does not get the same courtesy. No one seems to remember that this was a normal sixteen-year-old girl who didn’t have a clue about magic or mermaids, who fell a little too hard for a boy she didn’t pursue until she had the permission of his ex, who wanted to be the girls’ friend when she found out about the secret and was met with scorn and derision until she finally decided not to take it anymore. Did she make the wrong decisions? Yes. Did she do bad things? Yes. But her character goes deeper than that.

Anyone’s who’s followed me for a while knows that I will rant and rave about the Narrative of the show and that it seems to actively hate Charlotte while supporting the main characters. Why shouldn’t it? After all, Charlotte’s the designated antagonist of the season, of course we’re not going to like her. But what is it about her that incurs more rage than Dr. Denman, who just last season held four teenagers hostage for the sole reason of using one as leverage to make the other three let her experiment on them, or Sophie, who committed eco-terrorism and blew up a volcano after spending a season of scamming and lying to people? I really, really want to go with the answer that Charlotte is more rounded than any of the other “villains,” that Brittany Byrnes’ performance is just that memorable, that maybe it’s her connection to the other characters that makes her stick out more than anyone else. But while I think those are absolutely valid answers, I think there’s a little more to it. There’s something so malicious about the way the narrative treats her that’s hard to put a finger on, and it’s why I think she’s deserving of support and is more than the one-dimensional, man-stealing character that she gets stripped to, the kind of character that leads the actress to get hate mail to this day.

Charlotte does many bad things, I’m not denying it. She gets petty, she gets vindictive, she bullies the other girls from time to time. She lies and steals things. But one of the reasons I support her? It’s because so do the other characters, they just have the support of the narrative.

For example, in the first season, Zane stalks an old woman because he wants to know about some treasure that she says has and causes her to have a heart attack when he chases after her, and then, when Emma and Lewis show up and try to get her to help, he elects to stay behind and rob her houseboat while it sinks. He’s a bully to the girls whose prank on Cleo is the catalyst for the show. We explore his bad home life and his relationship with his abusive dad, and he gets to have a redemption arc and becomes a love interest for Rikki. Nate, his best friend, is constantly being gross and boundary-crossing to any girl on screen, physically attacks Lewis on more than one occasion, and is just a general creep, and no one barely says anything about it. Miriam is a semi-generic mean girl who barely does anything but get in the way occasionally. And these are just the side characters!

(I’m also tempted to explore how the male characters are sympathetic and get redemption arcs or rewards and the female characters are irredeemable, but that’s another topic for another time.)

Emma, Cleo, and Rikki aren’t much better than Charlotte when you really think about it. Cleo steals Charlotte’s diary and reads it, then confronts her in front of everyone. She barely apologizes and it’s more because she was wrong about what she was reading. There’s the infamous episode six where they all attack Annette and Charlotte, two women whose only crimes are, as far as they believe at the time, having romantic interests in people in their lives. They apologize to Annette, but only because they were wrong about her being on a date with Don. There’s the time that Emma and Rikki, in full mermaid form in public, play pranks on Lewis at the detriment of other people because, and let me check my notes here, Cleo was fired because of something she did and he was hired to fill that job. He is almost arrested because them doing all this caused a dolphin to escape and they barely apologize, in fact Rikki laughs off the idea of buying a replacement laptop (the reason he got the job).

Then there’s everything they did to Charlotte herself. Again, attacking her during their dinner because she dared to have a romantic interest in a boy she dumped and verbally said they were just friends when Charlotte asked if this was going to be a problem. They make snide comments to her all the time. I’m fairly certain Rikki tried hitting her with lightning during the camping episode, and while I’m on the subject of that episode, Lewis spits a drink all over her, and then laughs with the others about it! And they claim that the reason they do this is because they think Charlotte might be a mermaid now, but come on, if they really believed that, why would they risk an exposure like that? The answer is that they didn’t really think that, they just wanted an excuse to humiliate her.

Then! The second she is on an even keel with them, power-wise, that all stops, because now it’s a few episodes to the finale and we need a climactic ending, so now Charlotte becomes the most evil character you can imagine. It doesn’t matter that we’ve seen some twenty-odd episodes of three girls with superpowers use them against a normal girl whose sole weapon in her arsenal is being kinda mean to girls she does not care about unless her boyfriend is ignoring and ditching them for her. It’s okay when the main characters do it to the girl who is designated as the villain, but the villain can’t do it to them. Emma and Rikki can be in full mermaid form in public using their powers against someone for an imagined slight, but Charlotte can’t do the same thing to a person who just attacked their friend. Cleo can use her powers against people for no real reason except she’s mad at them, but Charlotte can’t make a mistake and use her powers to fend off an animal she’s afraid of.

There’s a subtle thing the show does that makes it easy to side with the main characters: no one holds them accountable, whereas with Charlotte, that’s all anyone does. Lewis half-heartedly says maybe they shouldn’t do things because it’s dangerous or wrong, but he’s just told to leave it alone or to shut up. Then when Charlotte becomes a mermaid, she tries her hardest to be nice and do everything to be their friend, but they just talk down to her and jump down her throat at every opportunity. Finally, in the last couple episodes, she just says enough and starts acting toward them like they’ve been acting to her. Which is bad. Because she’s… the bad guy.

And yet, I don’t hate Cleo, Emma, and Rikki for what they do, even as a Charlotte supporter. Cleo especially is going through a rough time that makes even the incredibly out of character things she does make sense. But why doesn’t Charlotte get the same curtesy? I don’t even mean in the fandom, but in the show itself. Why does everyone treat her like she’s out to get them, specifically? Charlotte doesn’t even care about them, or Mako, really, just in the sense of how it relates to Lewis and the grandmother she lost when she was a kid. It’s kinda funny, because even though Dr. Denman is never mentioned once after season one, you could write off their paranoia as part of being held hostage and almost used as a science experiment, which would be really interesting, if a little heavy for a kid’s show, if they explored that.

But it’s not, and, somehow, it’s Charlotte’s fault. It doesn’t matter if the show goes out its way to show how being ignored and ditched and lied to is obviously hurting her, because it’s not doing it out of being fair to her. It feels like a punishment, more than anything. Lewis can lie about spending time with his ex and straight up tell Charlotte to her face that he doesn’t have to tell her things if he doesn’t want to. The girls can attack her, and humiliate her, and laugh at her for having a silly fear. That’s fine, we can explain why they act like that. But we can also see things from Charlotte’s point of view too, even if the narrative doesn’t want us to.

I always say that if you don’t like Charlotte, that’s fine. I hope, and I am happy to see more often, people’s opinions of her change though, I’m not gonna lie, especially when I see her described as a needy, man-stealing abuser. That has never sat right with me, and I’m happy to go into that if anyone wants me to.

At the end of day, I find Charlotte a very tragic and fascinating character, one that I’ve dedicated a blog, multiple fanfics, and an essay I spent a week working on to exploring. I think there’s more to her than what I’m supposed to see her as, and more than one side to the whole situation, as I hope I’ve demonstrated above.

Okay I need to rant because I just got in an argument with someone over this and he blocked me as soon as he realized he didn’t have the facts on his side.

Original point he made: “The absolution of government funded mental institutions in the 80’s is the source of all our country’s current psychological problems.”

So for anyone who doesn’t know, those facilities were defunded and abandoned because they were prisons. They were torture chambers. No one’s mental health was actually being cared for in those places.

Women were sent to these “mental asylums” for being too promiscuous or too rebellious or for running away from home. Essentially, women and girls who refused to be good silent little pieces of property for their fathers or husbands, women and girls who tried to escape from abusive situations, were institutionalized so their families wouldn’t have to deal with them anymore. They were isolated. They were given shock therapy (and not the kind we have now that can be used as a treatment for epilepsy, what they were given was so much stronger and completely unsafe, many were left with permanent nerve damage after). Some of these women were even given lobotomies. A notable example would be Rosemary Kennedy who was left permanently disabled after her lobotomy.

Modern day “pray the gay away” camps also have their roots in the mental asylums of the past. Gay children (or children suspected of being gay) were institutionalized because they thought that forcing these kids to pray for hours a day with no food would “cleanse their spirits” and therefore “fix” them.

People with genuine mental health problems also ended up in asylums, but they weren’t helped either. Imagine the affects of stone walls, bad food, isolation, and the inability to go outside on a person with depression? A lot of patients killed themselves, in the words of one girl, “so that at least I may know my body will face the sun again”. (That quote is from the suicide note of a girl who was institutionalized in the 1950s, I’m going to try to find it again so I can link it here but I’m not sure if it’s even still on the internet.)

You know how there’s that stereotype of high school mean girls all growing up to be nurses? Yeah, this was a big thing in asylums too. According to letters and records from survivors of forced institutionalization, a majority of their nurses were cruel and delighted in withholding food or blankets or hygiene products for “bad behavior”.

Often times the people who forced the institutionalization would literally just dump their relatives there and forget about them. Which meant those people never got to leave, because they were not the ones who determined their health status. You couldn’t just say “I’m all good now, thanks!” and walk out. Either the doctors (many of whom were not licensed at all or were licensed but not for anything related to psychiatric treatment) had to pronounce you well, or you had to be retrieved by the person who put you there. And considering one of the main qualifiers for “health” was that you had to not be actively trying to leave (because people who were desperate to get out obviously just couldn’t accept they needed help and it wasn’t for any other reason) I’m sure you can imagine how often that happened.

So many people died in asylums, wasting away from their neglect, taking their own lives, or being killed in the struggle to escape. I read a record of one asylum in Virginia that had a huge problem of people dying of sepsis because they were so badly mistreated, and when patients asked to leave because they were sick, the nurses thought they were faking. Most asylums also had their own incinerators, which is why still to this day we have no idea how many people actually died in them. Add to that the fact that high-ranking or rich families would try to cover up the “embarrassment” of the children or wives they institutionalized, so no one was really sure how many patients the asylums had in the first place.

The mental asylums of the past are not something we should want to bring back. They are not something we should wish had continued. They should never have existed in the first place. Why do you think there are so many horror movies and books about haunted asylums? Granted, those aren’t great because they’re sensationalizing real people’s pain and vilianising the mentally ill, but still. There’s a reason people think restless and vengeful spirits would abound in a place like that.

And yes, there’s the argument to be made that current mental health facilities are also not good and they charge the patients for it, and I agree that is a massive problem. But the solution is not to bring back government funded asylums. The solution is government and health reform, free healthcare, and getting rid of the fucking scam that is insurance.

-Literally so rude and disrespectful to everyone except his mother (passed for unknown reasons years ago) and this 90 yr old woman he knows😭 I imagine he’s not rude to his customers at work but that man always has something bad to say! He talks shit about people constantly.

-Has anyone else noticed that punarvasu moons have weird relationships with their mothers? They’re either obsessed or they hate them

- He’s a huge megalomaniac and needs to be in control of us at all times. He needs to have everything a certain way and gets very angry at you if you deviate from it. He often spoils my brother (who is still a child) with the intention of getting him to like him more than my mother. This includes buying him expensive gifts, and when my mother scolds my brother over his bad behaviour, he goes crying to my dad who proceeds to coddle him and act like she’s the bad guy.

My dad has encouraged my brother when he’s been physically abusive or degrading to my mother several times😬

He once told my brother at the airport “I don’t care if you don’t listen to your mother or any of your teachers at school, but you must listen to me. I’m the boss. Ok?” It sounded way more controlling irl but I’m just paraphrasing.

Why I like TWST - pt1 (rant)

Slight spoilers for book 7

Twst is the best otome not otome games I’ve played for far and while I haven’t played all in existence, I played a decent amount of them

It solely lies in the fact that while it may be baity at times (Malleus I’m looking at you) it doesn’t need to rely on romance and cheap gags to keep the player (who is probably there for that exact reason) engaged…since it was marketed at just that.

There’s nothing wrong with the game, in fact if you like it go for it. The problem is the game can sometimes get too wrapped up in the fact that it must have pretty men (I’m only speaking for the ���fem directed otomes” because those are the ones I’ve played) that it looses the little boldness/any at all that dares to break the norm of what is beautiful or acceptable to make for an interesting game/story.

I’m gonna shit on obeys me’s later writing because as I’ve said before in this post, it has so much potential. But it abandons all else for cheap scenarios where the demons don’t even act like demons.

Anyways maybe that’s just my criticism with obey me or ygs could relate to another otome that the devs ruined for the sake of random fluff.

I like TWST so much because in its essence it’s exactly the opposite of what I described—not an otome. It doesn’t give a shit if the player (or simp, jk) gets butthurt if it’s set up in the narrative for this certain character not to be entirely head over heels for the MC.

Sure the plot isn’t perfect (I’m looking at u book 4) but think of it this way.. most players who are at least up to date use their knowledge of the canon plot to weave the story into their fanart/fanfiction. The plot is integral for the viewer to actually be invested and it is interesting and relevant enough that people actually use it when enjoying the game.

I’m gonna bet you the average player doesn’t know what’s going on in OM! past ch 50. Or maybe you do but I haven’t seen a lot of posts referencing anything plot wise past 20. (Except for the new characters) it’s because it’s simply not interesting enough to be pain attention to. (Maybe I’m being too harsh but this is my experience)

Criticism

I think one of my only criticisms about TWST is about the MC (in game) I like the direction they go in the manga but in game they’re kinda meh. Now I know they do fulfill their purpose and TWST isn’t that kinda game (you need to insert yourself) but I feel that giving the MC a personality or at least a backstory (ish) would be better since that is what they did in the manga

Idk self insert MCs can be fun (don’t get me wrong I love em) but personally I feel that the MC should be given an explanation as to why they are like that. Why are they a beast tamer?, what do they feel in being in a school with otherworldly subjects?, how do they cope with living in a Rickety environment? What are some clues about their backstory /what they remember before coming to TWST that could aid in buildup for when ortho (bless his soul) finds a possible answer to how we ended up here?

Also this is my oc/what I believe to be interesting but I found it interesting as to what living as a girl in a school full of boys can affect the MC. I don’t believe this part should be implemented in the main thing because there are a bunch of wonderful male MCs, but it is something I would want to explore.

my degree is a completely different subject. first off we have eight subjects this semester. EIGHT. we have more than any other degree in this fuckass university, and the workload is frankly ridiculous. i hope my professors aren’t aware that their subject isn’t the only one in the world because if they know the shit we have to do for other subjects and they keep sending us all the shit they do im killing them all and then myself. what the fuck do you mean the business professor keeps making us work as much as in development biology? ITS WORTH HALF THE CREDITS.

1. Rant to me about a book you absolutely hate!!!!!! (For the ask game)

so I don’t have a lot of books I can think of that I hated but the first to come to mind that I hated (and finished) was She Drives Me Crazy by Kelly Quindlen (warning that this got super long so I’m doing a see more for it)

let me preface this that it is my opinion and if you like it that is totally fine!! also spoiler warning

okay for starters, fake dating is something I enjoy quite a bit! I really love fake dating, but I’m usually not a huge fan if it is to make someone else jealous tho which is a big part of Scottie’s motivation, so already off to a bad start.

Scottie is the main character here. Her and irene are supposedly enemies, but the events that make them hate each other are just not comparable to me. The reason Scottie hated Irene was LITERALLY A MISCOMMUNICATION. It would’ve been so quick and easy to clear it up but instead she hated Irene and was so mean to her (explained later)

There’s an incident at the start of the series where there’s a small car accident between the two and Irene needs her car repaired. Irene’s mom insisted that she had to pay for it, and to do so she would’ve likely need to quit cheer to get a job to cover it. So in the meantime, they’re carpooling. Scottie and her girlfriend had broken up not long before the book starts so Scottie offers to pay Irene $1000 to fake date her to make her ex jealous (which is just insane, you are 17 years old, a relationship is not worth it if you are needing to spend money to fake date a pretty girl to make her jealous). They only even broke up because her girlfriend was moved to another school haha not even out of STATE just a little bit away.

Scottie talks about Irene being mean but she really isn’t?? Like Scottie is so much meaner to Irene and is super judgmental.

Here are some examples of things scottie did to Irene (using a book review to confirm my info for this because I read this like 2+ years ago and it just has stuck with me so might be some slight inaccuracies)

1. Tells irene she is “too stupid” and that’s why she didn’t get into an AP class

2. Purposefully makes Irene spill her coffee on herself while driving her to school (then does the stupid ‘name three songs’ thing about the Green Day shirt Irene was wearing)

3. Said its misogynistic that cheerleaders always cheered for the boys sports and told Irene that cheer wasn’t a real sport anyways (multiple times) and insists that she didn’t deserve the student athlete of the year award even tho she worked her ass off to deserve it (and damn if that ain’t some misogynistic bullshit if you ask me)

Here’s a quote I found in the reviews that is a big reason why I fucking hate scottie

Had Scottie’s car towed. And it wasn’t even malicious! She accidentally had Scottie’s car towed when she was trying to have someone else’s towed to prevent them from driving drunk after a party they were at. Like if I were Scottie id be pretty pissed but like ? Just make her pay the fucking fee to get it back. Don’t need to be a huge bitch about it. She would’ve known it was an accident too if she just TALKED TO HER, but no, decided Irene was her worst enemy ever

And we find out about what happened after Scottie kissed her ex at a party after her and irene are sorta getting together for real, and brings the car issue up when irene is upset with her for it. Like I’m sorry you’re only going to bring up the awful “oh you towed my car” thing when you just kissed your ex when you’re with her??? Nope not comparable whatsoever I’m sorry

AND when she asked Irene to fake date her, Irene wasn’t out!! She was out to her family but Scottie really put her in a shitty situation with her offer. She either had to get a job and quit cheer (which if I remember correctly was how she planned to get a college scholarship!!!) OR she could fake date this mean girl for money and out herself in the process. I hated that and that’s only the smallest of things

Small thing too is that apparently the book was set where I live?? Funny that it even mentions where they are from because I have not a single memory of any specific thing that would make me think it is set here haha

Anyways yeah if you made it this far, thank you for hearing my bitchy book thoughts. I cannot think of a single other book that I’ve read start to finish that I dislike enough to say this much about it (I’m very good at knowing if ill hate a book before I start it and I’m very easy to please as is)

I agree with a lot of what you say about the shipping of ppgxrrb and how the fans just depict them as ultra hot bad boys. Its a breath of fresh air to see others’ perspectives on this, cause as I said before I admit I am a fan sometimes but even seeing a lot of ooc works puts me off. I understand if older fans/people only like it because of nostalgia (I’m one of those) but I’m more baffled with seeing new/younger that also likes to ship them, I can see them just liking the Boys cause they think gender bent/evil/alternate versions of the main protagonist are just fun in general, but I don’t understand why a lot of new fans that also ships them, maybe its because of fanart/fanfic.

In regard of that fic (assuming we’re talking about the same thing) I think the reason why it was praised so much and put on high pedestal was because the standard of the ppgxrrb fics were pretty low (at the time anyway) and for me personally it does felt I’m watching the original when I read it, (aside from the shipping thing, but I only read it for the character writing mostly) imo probably the closest thing I can get to what an older/teenage ppg would sound/read like, it just had shipping… lol but also yea I agree with you about the other villains not getting enough fanfics for themselves, its unfortunate cause ppg has so many great villains and the fandom just chose the least interesting ones (rrb)

Also I love how you described Boomer, he’d definitely be a whiteknight type then probably go “bubblevicious” when he doesn’t get what he wants, in fics he’s usually the first, quickest and easiest to be redeemed which is just very boring and probably the reason why Blues (BubblesxBoomer) is the least favorite of the 3 ships.

Yeah, I think on the most basic, superficial level, taking NOTHING about the personality or history of the characters into account, if you were to show someone who never saw the show a lineup of the Powerpuff GIrls characters and ask them, "Who are the girls' boyfriends?" they would choose the Rowdyruff Boys. Just because of their character designs they're the easiest characters to pair them off with. And I don't use "superficial" or "easy" as an insult, like... it just is what it is by the very nature of it. On a little less of a basic level, they're probably the only boys in the show (including the boys that are in the girls' class like Mitch and Elmer and Harry, etc.) that would be considered "attractive" enough to match up with them. Which, y'know, I could go into a whole rant about the superficiality (negative this time, haha) of that and how that way of thinking feels very creatively limiting... but, yeah, when you're a new fan and you see all this fic/fanart, not to mention how the ship is ultra visible and popular, it's the simplest entry point.

We're totally talking about the same fic. 😂 Again, I've really tried to read it and have an open mind about it, and I guess the mere fact that (from what I remember) the girls occasionally do have fights in it is enough to make it different from a standard PPG/RRB fic where the girls' superpowers are completely forgotten about (a la the City of Clipsville girls)... but the villains and the crimefighting STILL just feel like an afterthought (and maybe it's just my pretentiously high standards for them talking, but I remember really disliking how the dialogue of some of the few villains that are even included in the story was written). For the most part it just seems like it's all just fancy set dressing to disguise your average high school teen fanfic. I remember trying to read it again a while ago and I got to an early point where like some characters were suddenly like making out and I was just like... ew, no, not for me. 😩 That doesn't make me feel like I'm watching the show, that just makes me sick to my stomach! Stuff like that just pulled me way out, I couldn't enjoy it.

And I guess that's also a thing I dislike about some of the fanfics, like... if the RRB are going to have any similarities to the girls it's going to be their negative attributes, but that doesn't seem like an issue that ever gets explored. It seems like, despite whether or not people write them as still having problematic misogynist qualities, Brick always just turns out to be the hot intelligent one, Butch is the tough dude bro, and Boomer is the sweet, sensitive boi. How boring IS that?! 🤣 It doesn't seem like anyone's really challenged themselves to see things from any different, meaningful perspectives, and I have always felt that way. It is a bummer though that, when I have found the rare fanfic that has great writing and feels like the show characters and tells a story that's interesting and new (or even has a ship for the girls that's completely off the wall but... somehow actually works!)... it's because I had to dig through all the PPG/RRB content to find it. And I've seen many people who've written cool stuff get frustrated enough about that difficulty of visibility that that they take down their fics, or they get discouraged from writing anything else, or they even get harassed for daring to write anything against the norm. It bums me out.

(technically I was 12 as my bday is near the end of the year)

main character’s dad leaves her and her mother for another woman when she was like 10, Understandably she doesn’t like her dad

she has ‘not like other girls’ phase and isn’t interested in boys which is framed as a bad thing, she babysits these kids that are mean to her

her wanker for a father gets back with her mum and is going to move them to America. She is understandably pissed off about it and it’s framed as her being a brat

(side note My parents are divorced, So while not for these reasons, the people in my classi guess had never heard of the concept and yeah that was not a fun class)

18 year old man died at sea, dovey is a widow and apparently didn’t have a good life afterwards (noooo she the only good and likeable character in this damn book), blad child went time travel and the father of bald child and 18 went to the psych ward never to be seen from again.

Look I can’t ignore the shit theyve done ok and I can’t say that I like them now but I will say that I miss them from before. I think like mid-last year was better and when I think of them on my own I can only remember running across the playground hand in hand in the rain or literally cackling over a doodle of Kirby with stick arms in English class or sneaking out of last period a little early together or goofing around in my own kitchen attempting a paper mache volcano and then I feel like a shitty friend for everything I said about them but they both hold true. We’re not the same as how we used to be to eachother and im always going to miss how we were no matter what, and again I’m not saying I like them, im saying I miss them, but I can’t like them for who they became

C - oh my goddd where do I start ok: they used to be like that person who you could always count on to have the bestttt insight advice or just reason. They were always so cool and so admirable (again not in the pervert way) They were always the most logical and just right with their opinions which is why I cannot believe how things have turned. - theyre often very passionate and their energy is contagious

- the weird ass conversations we have (online and irl) that would seem so strange and incoherent to a stranger

- how we dont even have to be talking its just 100% more enjoyable if theyre in the room too

- Art! Theyre such a good artist dude even the doodles in the margins of their books are somehow neat

- they can make me laugh even through text which might be a byproduct of how much I love them but it still counts

- idk if this sounds stupid but they just have like all the best opinions (except when it comes to their taste in men /j)

I don't usually do formal reviews and I don't want to (I am under the impression that if you don't have your work out in the public, or experience in such fields, your opinion is unneeded), and this blog was never meant for that. Having said that...

Have you ever read a book and thought “oh, this isn’t too bad. And it’s the first of the series, maybe it gets better,” so you keep reading only to find that the potential for the world and its concept was wasted on a (MORE THAN) four book series that had no actual plot save for the illogical love triangle that was repeated from the main character to the side characters? If you haven’t, here’s my opinion of C.C. Hunter’s Shadow Falls series— or at least to the point where I decided that I simply could not go on (not even with the audio book provided by my library). Allow me to waste my time, so you don’t waste yours.

Before I start a little disclaimer: I read this book for free from my local library. This is purely out of a need to express my frustration with the Shadow Falls Series and should not be considered an academic review (as if it ever would, lmao). THIS REVIEW WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS.

Kylie our main character is a (high school aged) girl who doesn’t fit in at school despite her best friend's attempts to get them both to be popular. Her boyfriend recently broke up with her because he wouldn’t sleep with him, her newly sex-positive “bestie” is acting like a different person (what she was like before, we don’t know because apparently having sex before marriage is more important to lecture us about for twelve pages). And worse of all, her parents are going through a cold-war divorce. Kylie sides with her dad without knowing why they’re getting divorced because she likes him more than the “ice-queen” of a mother. To get rid of her judgment for the summer, Kylie’s mother sends her to a camp for troubled teens, full of gasp! “Goth” kids. If a probably god-fearing, middle aged white woman (read: Circle Queen, House) is going to write about angsty teens who wear black over coloured clothes in the 2000’s, there are more expressive words and subcultures to use other than Goth. Just saying. At this camp, Kylie finds out it’s for supernaturals (she sees a ghost of a dead soldier), she meets and (weirdly) befriends Holiday, one of the camp counsellors-

Let me just say, the relationship is weird. While it could work, in a whole-some cool aunt-figure kind of way, it borderlines on bad-touch with how often Kylie and Holiday hold relationship-inappropriate conversations; as far as I could tell, Holiday was somewhat of a guidance counsellor for the kids in tougher situations but there was never any evidence of her going the same distance for the other campers. Not only that, she and Holiday spend most of their time talking about love and sex, something she could go to her age-appropriate roommates about, rather than work on Kylie’s supernatural identity. I could go on a whole rant about the dynamic they have, and how much potential for the actual series was wasted by spending majority of the time with these two in Holiday’s office talking about their feelings, but that would probably end up longer than this piece.

The “love-triangle” that is apparently the main feature of this series has no chemistry. The first option is a boy who used to be her neighbour but disappeared one day (werewolf). The second, a boy who looks like the ex-boyfriend but is nice/respects her as a person (fae). The downside to the fae is that he can read/slightly manipulate her emotions (like her new bestie Holiday). The downside to the werewolf is that he might be a murderer in a gang who killed her new kitten as a kid. Oh also, a she-wolf who he slept with by accident(?) is his stalker who hates Kylie’s guts.

I’m all for bad-boy werewolf types, but really?

Kylie has insecurities around intimacy, we get it. We really do. Does it have to be limited to just sex though? Her parents are going through a divorce because one was unfaithful! She was lied to her entire life! Her friend was betrayed by someone she loved and is acting like a different person! All these things can change how she sees relationships, but the only thing she’s caught up on is sex!? For a series published in the States from 2011-2014, it’s weirdly hung up on the anti-sex message; what, was it some kind of personal response to Pretty Little Liars? 16 and Pregnant? The broadcasting company MTV itself? It did have some great scenes between Kylie and her roommates, Dela and Miranda, about feminism. Unfortunately… the rest of the series exists around it.

Either way the plot of the series began interesting; girl gets in trouble. Girl gets sent to a place for troubled teens. The troubled teens are less human that she thought, and by the way so is she. They don’t know what she is and its a problem. Strange things start to happen around camp, specifically around her.

Unfortunately, nothing is foreshadowed, and what little plot/adventure this supernatural drama series was chopped down to a total of six out of (around) thirty chapters. If the love triangle was feeling stale or they couldn't advance anything, whoohoo! there's a murderer, or a tiger, or some kind of unrelated trouble at camp that gets no attention elsewise despite being a far bigger issue!!

DO NOT even get me started about the pacing; I had the fortune to read this during the months I was taking a class for both copy and substantive editing— If I could (legally) rewrite this I would, in fact! After DNFing I was so mad that I re-outlined the first four chapters that not only establish foreshadowing for Kylie and her enigma of a problem, but also her intimacy (and general) issues, the camp organization and world, as well as ACTUAL CAMP THINGS. (If this is a summer camp, why does Kylie have access to her cellphone 24/7? Why do the cabins that hold 3 kids each have a full kitchen as well as a camp mess hall? Why do these cabins have separate rooms, a living room, and a desktop computer? What are the camp activities besides picking a name out of a hat and talking for an hour? we don’t see what the other kids do because Kylie’s heritage is unknown and that makes her an social outcast, but surely there are ways to include mention of them at least! I can count on a crippled hand how many camp-things that actually happen in the first three books alone! At least nine books! And yes. I know its government sponsored, I know they get special treatment and funding and blah blah blah, but Holiday’s main issue in the 2nd book is finding sponsors outside of the feds???? Whatever moving on.)

Whatever little plot there was, wasn’t built up enough. There was too much focus on nonsensical and unattractive relationships and not enough on the camp and Kylie’s exploration into being supernatural. The pacing is horrible; ending a chapter mid-scene for (non) dramatic effect, ending a scene/chapter and beginning it in the same place with the same characters only a few seconds later. Like I said before, the entirety of the books focus on build up for Kylie’s love (un)interest and not the plot it claims to have. Kylie’s heritage, revealed at the end of the third book and clarified in the first three lines of the fourth, could have saved us all the time and been introduced as early as the second book, leaving the others additions to show what her life becomes after that; I wonder why Hunter didn’t just write a regular romance novel? It comes off as a cash grab for the Twilight crowd when it could honestly be so much more.

Great potential. Bullshit execution.

My interest in this series started back when I was just starting to read eBooks, probably around the time this series started. I read the free sample on playbooks and noted it for later. Flash forward to 2024 and I find a physical copy of my book at the library, rent it and then return it in a week barely past the point the free sample left off. I picked it back up as an audio book about a week later, and that is probably the only reason I was able to get as far as I did. I skipped the third book by accident, and it was more frustrating to find out that the big reveal that was built up for the past two weeks of my life was something I guessed from the moment they mentioned Kylie’s trouble fitting in and her weird “brain pattern” (that is such an awkward name for it, brain pattern? Really?).

I did not purchase this or any of the books in this series; and I wouldn’t wish anyone waste their time or money on it if they do not have to. If you are curious and would like to further understand my frustration reading this novel, you’d probably find it in your local library or a backlog of old WATTPAD entries.

Ven takes sip of their tea. What was meant to be a brief summary of the whole problem had devolved into a two-hour rant about the commissioner’s past relationship. Said relationship was what lead to this whole commission in the first place, as the lady’s ex-lover had sent a wedding invitation to her a week prior.

“That’s rather despicable.”

“Right!? That poor girl, getting married to him… I can’t stand this! We must save her.”

In a way, she was right. The main point of this commission was to crash the wedding, but it never detailed anything about the bride being crashed.

Gasps and shrieks echo around the cathedral, scandalously turning their neck towards the giant doors of the room.

“Wha- you! What are you doing here!?”

“You bastard, you sent me an invite to this shitshow!”

The lady screamed furiously, pointing fiercely as the crowd continued to murmur and point at the both of them.

“I may be biased, but you really ought to treat women a lot better, Sir.”

As the lady grabs the wrist of the bride, Ven steps in and polearm in hand.

“What? And who the hell are you!?”

“An accomplice of sorts. Don’t try anything foolish, this is all legal.”

At the sight of a weapon many of the attendee’s gasp. Some of them even started trying to leave the cathedral in fear of getting hurt.

“Are you insane!? Security! Where is security!?”

“Ugh.”

They throw the weapon to the side and knock the groom out with a solid hit to the back of his head.

“Miss, are you done?”

“L-Let go! What’s happening right now…?”

Ven grabs her other arm. “Sorry, Miss, please come with us. We’ll explain everything in a bit.”

“Yeah! Our getaway driver is over there, follow me!”

“I’m sorry, what?”

Ven flings open the door and follows the two women as they speedwalk to the back of the building. As they turn the corner, there seems to be nothing there.

“Alright, you two ready?”

Ven looks around everywhere: up, down, left, behind them, but there’s nothing anywhere to get them away from the current standing.

“Where’s your getaway, Miss?”

She grins, pointing out into the air.

“See that? It’s coming this way!”

Ven turns their head to spot… Nothing. There wasn’t there.

“You’re going to have to specify.”

“The aquabus! You have a geo vision, can you make a platform to the platform?”

They snap towards her. “The what!?”

“The aquabus!”

“I heard you the first time, what!?”

“Hurry! It’s coming, we have to be quick!”

Ven conjures up a very makeshift platform to the aquabus. They can hear the motors of the vessel as they run further and further down the platform.

“Now! Up, up!”

“Stop rushing me, please!”

Ven swoops up the path to spiral upwards. They lead as the two women trail hot on their heels.

The Melusine on board’s voice could be heard from this place. Ven hoisted the two onto the aquabus’ course as it approached quickly.

“Jump!”

“Thank you two…”

As Ven and the commissioner detailed the end of their exchange, the bride approached them timidly.

“That man… He offered a lot of money to my parents to have us wed. He… He was a nightmare to work with. Thank you both so much.”

Ven glances at the commissioner. Her face sours at the mention of the groom.

“Don’t worry. I’ll do anything I can to help you from that man.” She flexes her arm. “Plus, we already got him once. With this, it’ll be easier to bring that creep to jail.”

The bride tears up at her words.

Ven decides to leave the commission payment at a later date and leaves the two women to talk about their future plans.

Ugh. These commissions really were getting weirder and weirder.

I read your anime recommendations and thought,,, wow, she really didn't lie when she said she had shitty taste, but then I saw you mention NATSUME!! You redeemed yourself with this one, it's absolutely fenomenal, my favourite anime of all time and I just can't stress enough how much I love it. It's over 70 episodes + a movie but I rewatched it 3 times, don't regret anything. Did you know that season 7 was announced?? After 6 years??? I'm so happy I thought they forgot about it!!!

Also I thought I was the only person who's seen the Chuunibyou one. I only watched it because it was loosely based on a vocaloid song of the same title and curiosity took the best of me but it was surprisingly good!

In the second half you also listed some really good shows like Sasamiya, Dr. Stone, Kiss him not me or Horimiya so I think I can say your taste isn't as bad as you consider it to be!!

Have you seen Given? I think you'd like it based of what you've recommended. It's cute, gay, gets pretty emotional and has really good music. One of the main characters might seem annoying, but personally I could connect with him in a way? It's just that he has this main personality trait that isn't really anything new in anime and people might not like it but it was the first time I've seen it being done right. He feels how I feel a lot of the time and idk, I might just be weird but he became my comfort character because of it.

Anyway yes!!! I knew about the natsume new season!!!! I have a bestie who is obsessed with natsume as much as I am. I remember the 6th season came out while I was still in high school and I would watch it during class with the school’s internet and like GOD every episode is a master piece I love that show so much I rewatch episodes randomly every once in a while, mostly the Shigeru and Touko one that one makes me SOB 😭😭😭

Chunnibyou I also watched it bc of the song I listened to the atr version of it and I thought it was dumb but I wasn’t expecting it to be as funny as it was. Like the main character being all into super heroes and wanting to be a super hero just to show how stupid that is and the fact that characters is voiced BY DEKU HIMSELF makes it all so poetic. The guy who believes he’s a demon or whatever getting a gf who plays along his delusions? Absolutely great. The guy obsessed with 2D girls? Somehow he’s the most normal. Catboy who edgy as fuck with a shit ton of sisters who are mean to him? Hilarious. Cringe ass Utaite guy? I feel like they could have done more with him but he was funny when he was his Utaite persona. I’m also impressed the girl who was really the straight man in all this wasn’t boring at all I was worried bc in shows like these girls tend to be just boring and tell them to stop and even if she sometimes did she would indulge in the madness so I think that was refreshing to see. Pls everyone give Chuuibyou Gekihatsu Boy a chance!

Sasaki to Miyano is so good 😭😭😭 goes a little slow to me but I got used to it after a while and the payoff is really good. Dr.Stone goat all I can say is that if you need a reason to watch it that reason should be Asagiri Gen his bitchass assholness really makes the show for me (also the science is actually pretty fun). Kiss him not me I don’t remember anything about it honestly except an episode where they fight over a ship name which I’ve seen enough in fandom spaces so like relatable and horimiya…..horimiya is so good pls everyone go watch it 😭😭😭 I would die for them holy shit like the most realistic interpretation of love and relationships I’ve seen. The drama is very ground in reality too like the one you see is not unnecessary or used to fuck them over it’s just so good!

Oh yeh I watched Given! I have pretty shit memory so I forgot to include it but I left it only at season one and didn’t bother to watch the movie (was there a movie right?) bc it focuses on Haru and the other guy and like they seemed boring to me I only cared about Mafuyu and Uenoyama and I got what I wanted out of them so I’m pleased with what I got uwu also did you know the mangaka used to write Haikyuu Doujinshi? That’s why Mafuyu and Uenoyama have that very familiar color scheme LMAO good stuff good stuff

I wanted to come up with something original for my blog, but, well... can’t think of anything. And my main reason of starting this blog was because I want to vent and rant and go batshit insane. I’m not doing this to be creative and incredible and fabulous and a good writer.

I like to fork myself was the title of late Daul Kim’s blog. She was magnificent, I loved her work and I think she was veeeery pretty. I’ve always enjoyed reading her posts and I still do it up until now. I was going through her entries and thought, hm, maybe I should write something too. Maybe then when I finally killed myself for real someone would comment, damn, they were gone too soon. Then maybe some rando would comment lol glad she killed herself. Whatever. I don’t care. Perhaps I do want to be remembered in a way and I want to leave something in this world. 

Perhaps that’s because I just enjoy attention very much. Perhaps I just want everyone to know they’ve done me wrong and if I ever killed myself they’re responsible for it and I want them to feel guilty about it. But perhaps I’m just a silly little girl with silly little thoughts also <3

ANYWAAAAYY. About the title. I listened to plenty of Keshi back then when I was in junior high school. He wasn’t as big as he is right now (which is good for him and for everyone, of course. I’m the opposite of gatekeeper. I want people to give love to people who deserve lots of it) and I was like, “damn, would be great if I could see this guy live” and boom. He toured to Jakarta a while ago. I couldn’t afford the tickets, though, and I don’t really listen to his new releases so I ended up not going.

Well, I still listen to him from time to time. I used to love xoxosos, the reaper, and onoffonoff a lot. An awful lot. I KNOW. Girl you were barely sixteen you don’t need to be listening to all that BUT I had my first lesbian breakup and bitch it really was that bad. And, well, now that I had another one... I find myself completely fucked. That’s how I end up listening to songs-that-certainly-fucks-me-bad-in-the-head again.

I just wrote something romantic and tender. Hell. Who was I kidding? Age gap relationships don’t work.

They’ll eventually find people around their age. Even if with you things line up perfectly, there’s someone out there who can provide better. Better and easier. No need to wait for them to catch up with you. Or, well, to put it harshly: they’ll find someone they can fuck without feeling much guilt. Damn. I wish it’s that easy for me to find someone to fuck...

When I say I’m a Lana girl I don’t mean just the cigarettes for breakfast and the dainty outfits. I like old ass people LIKE I always fucking let myself get fucked by people way older than me I never fucking learn. At this point I think I’ve developed a kink for it and I wish I was kidding. I simply have no self respect. I genuinely think this will happen again because... yeah... perhaps I’m enjoying it. Because I’m a masochist a pervert a fuck up a everything bad and horrible.

I should go to therapy but I’m so ashamed of this. Of everything that ever happened to me. I have no difficulties writing it but saying it out loud with my mouth, while presenting myself as this wretched body and face, saying this as an ugly ass disgusting person and not just some stranger on the internet... would be embarrassing.

I’m just so embarrassed of myself. Really.

Aaaah. This is so naive but I actually can’t wait to grow up! I know it will be hard, I know, but let me be, okay. I want to have a job. I want to have money. I know it will be hard and I might want to take it back, but the idea of having something to look forward to is... great. I suppose. I don’t know what I want to be. I was never passionate in this field and I don’t have strong opinions about anything. People around me are so incredible and so passionate about making changes, while I just sorta... float. I’m barely getting by. I think my grades will drop this semester lol I don’t give a fuck about anything anymore. I wish I could be so incredible and amazing that people who left me will regret doing so but damn... I... don’t care. They were right for leaving me because I’m a good for nothing!

I think for now I’m setting my goal on a divorce lawyer. I want to help women escape hell.

Maybe I’ll kill myself but for now things in my life are going well! I had a breakdown over noodles yesterday. I made noodles and left some for my parents when they come back, but they didn’t eat it. I ended up eating it myself and cried. But earlier my Dad said he was saving it for this morning, and when he checked the dining table, the noodles are gone... I said I ate it. He said he wanted to eat it. I was happy.

I love him... I love my family. I feel bad for turning to this. I really want to make them proud. I want to get a nice job and pay for things and buy them nice stuff before I leave them forever because well religions are non negotiable I suppose.
