i want to say, i ADORE the limb differences (other words for 'missing limbs' that i prefer to use) in the under garden, from the art of them that youve posted on here!! absints lower arm for example :)
i havent read yet, i havent been able to scrounge up the money to buy (hopefully soon!!) but im super excited to buy and read for many reasons, this among them!!
but just, seeing characters with limb differences who are still cool and important and often seem powerful.. it just gives me hope and makes me feel seen!! fantasy is my ansolute favorite genre, but im disabled and i havent found much fantasy stuff that includes disabled characters at All, i can count on one hand the amount of disabled characters ive seen in fantasy stuff :,)
i dont have a limb difference myself (degenerative disc disease and worsening hearing for me) but seeing ANY disabled character is just so lovely, it brings me joy :,) so thank you for including characters with disabilities!!!! it doesnt go unnoticed, and its heavily appreciated and wonderful to see!!
it also makes me curious, do you have any characters in the under garden who are disabled in other ways?? vision, hearing, mobility related conditions, etc? having just one type of disability repped is also amazing regardless of if you have others of course, im just curious :)
and if you ever need a disability-related sensitivity reader/info person based on lived experience for anything, if you ever make a post about it id definitely hit you up XD
have a lovely week, and i hope this ramble isnt too huge haha!
Thank you so much! I hope you enjoy it when you do manage to read it 🖤🖤🖤
The Under Garden has a couple of separate "storylines" with their own casts and we haven't set everything in stone for most of them, so take this with a grain of salt. Amongst primary and secondary cast, we have a couple of people with disabilities/chronic pain from injuries, medical complications, etc, some more explicitly shown than others. Technically Ashton, for instance, has a degenerative condition (loosely linked to the idea of butterflies having a very short lifespan after cocooning) and it's a big part of his role in the story overall
There's other instances of characters that could potentially have parallels to real world illnesses or disabilities but they're so intertwined with magical/fantasy mechanics that it's up to each reader to see how they feel about it.
Oh and we're toying with the idea of one of our main characters having a severe hearing impediment but it's a WIP because it might actually affect the plot

i wanna say it was in episode 3 after the boxing match when i was struck with the intense need to savor every second of mentopolis.
the mental image of a conrad driving with so much reckless abandon that the car is like half off the ground as it speeds away, hunch and dan bumping around in the backseat on either side of ivana who in comparison looks bolted down to the seats, money flying out and trailing behind them as justin hangs his head out the window...
all i could think was "oh this is the best." like the best. and while i do agree that 6 episodes is a perfect length for the season, what with them running at the speed of thought and all, i could also fully see them working with a 15-20 ep season just as smoothly.
and i don't just mean that as "this season would have been better with more eps" cuz tbh i don't think it would have been better, so much as it just would have been different. they could never make anything more and i'd still be satisfied. what i'm saying is that i think it'd make a great length as a second season.
which would be a great opportunity for brennan to flesh out the world elias lives in, while also allowing for more in-depth character development from the pcs.
this first season could act as a prologue to the world of mentopolis. and then the second season immediately kicks off with elias dealing with the aftermath in some way. maybe witness protection wasn't enough and now he's on the run from gobstopper industries. or maybe it was but now he has to learn how to adjust to living as a person with needs again after being alone and overworked for so long.
and as he navigates this new relationship, the attention from the press, the looming question of what now what next— we get to see how our prefrontal pis are doing as their lives were also flipped upside-down by this change in elias' life. cuz regardless of how positive and welcome a change may be, there is still a rather difficult adjustment period as you attempt to decipher where your place is in this new-normal.

what's the post about the competent lieutenant fantasy genre??? i just read wolf hall and luv'd it and am curious tehe
EXCELLENT QUESTION
it is this post on the thrilling newly coined microgenre whose name i slightly misremembered, BUREAUCRAT FICTION. best captured in its appeal, for me personally, in this requirement:
should include at least one scene where the protagonist is unironically applauded-perhaps for the first time in their life-for filling out a form really good.
this was an excellent, even life-changing discovery, revealing to me an interest i have always unknowingly had, and i hope op doesn't mind me suggesting that one transformers fic as an addition to the canon

I think it's pretty weird that there's an entire group of people on tiktok trying to make it seem like that dog Bunny who pushes all the buttons to communicate with her people is getting TOO self aware to the point of being depressed and filled with existential dread
Like, the way people are trying to spin it is completely different from what is being shown? She is clearly smart and she does occasionally ask some deep questions like wondering who is in the mirror and whether she's human or dog but they act like she's in need of rescue because she's TOO self aware.
Then you go to her page and it's like just a very smart dog pointing out that one of her people is in the bathroom pooping or she's pushing the 'walk' button or she's mad because it's raining and she's wet like lmao WHERE ARE THESE PEOPLE GETTING THESE SUPPOSED RED FLAGS?
They say she's on antidepressants and they use that as evidence that she's too self aware and her owners are basically abusing her for giving her this consciousness and treating her distress as fun jokes for the internet but like.... do you think animals DONT have mental illness? It's not uncommon for animals to have anxiety or depression or ptsd. Theyre living beings who are not immune to the stress of being alive in the 21st century. So even if Bunny is on antidepressants, it's not necessarily proof that her supposed 'human like consciousness' is to blame.
It feels like random, potentially harmful rumors being spread around for no reason other than to stir up controversy.
If any of these people actually did watch her videos they would clearly see that she seems well taken care of. Yes, she's smart, and sometimes makes shocking observations (likely not always intentionally) but uhhhh dogs ARE smart. Give them the tools to show their intelligence and you will be amazed. She's a sheepadoodle no less. Which is a HIGHLY intelligent breed. But other than the 'self awareness' she doesn't show any signs of being unhappy or mistreated. She is healthy and well groomed and surrounded by love and enrichment. She gets plenty of interaction with other dogs and goes on frequent walks with her owners who shower her with love and affection.
I dunno it just feels like one of those situations where people need to like... touch grass and stop believing the tiktok fear mongers.
