Frequently Asked Questions:
I get some version of these pretty much every day so I thought I'd make an FAQ:
What is my dominant planet/How do I find it?
If you knew enough about astrology and your birth chart, you would know which planet influenced you the most. Most people acutely feel a combination of at least 2-3 planetary influences most strongly. In reality, every single planet and nakshatra in our chart influences us but we probably aren't self-aware enough/knowledgeable about astrology enough to see how it impacts us. Each planet correlates to a different area of your life. Since Sun represents the soul/outer self and Moon represents the mind/emotions, its safe to say these 2 placements impact every area of life but when it comes to relationships/creativity/beauty, you channel your Venus whether you're aware of it or not and same goes for all other planets. Whenever you do something of a creative bent, you tap into your Ketu, your education is affected by your Mercury and Jupiter, so on and so forth.
If you're very new to vedic astrology or if you haven't been able to figure out your dominant planets, just let it be!! This is not a puzzle to be solved, there is no way for you or somebody else to mechanically calculate your "dominant" planet. I don't know you, I don't know what you look like, what your personality is like, so there is absolutely no way for me to tell what influence comes through most acutely.
Also, the concept of "dominance" itself is pretty much a made up one (thanks Claire Nakti) so literally, just chill out!!! Read about your placements, and learn more about astrology instead of trying to claim planets. You're influenced by your whole chart, its that simple. That's it.
2. Which website should I use?
You can use astro seek.com or the Cosmic Insights app or the Jagannatha Hora app. On astro seek, you have to adjust to "whole sign" instead of Placidus though. On the others, that's the default setting, I think.
3. Which ayanamsa should I use?
I stick to Lahiri
4. I have xyz nak/planet/house, am I doomed/ugly/forever alone/unlucky?
NO
Astrology helps us understand our strengths and weaknesses, there is no placement that comes as a death sentence of some sort. I feel like most people don't understand that your birth chart is supposed to make you self-aware of your natural inclinations, tendencies, patterns etc so that you can work with them/make necessary changes etc. Your chart is NOT set in stone. Human behaviour is far too complex to be narrowed down to a birth chart. It shows your INCLINATIONS, which means that if you're self aware, you can make necessary adjustments to work on unhealthy habits/tendencies.
Astrology is not "this is who you are, you suck",, it's a tool for self-growth.
If you have difficult placements, you need to pay more attention to them and work on those areas. Why on earth would you just accept that everything is fcked and its game over for you bc of what the stars said??? Sorry to be rude but that's dumb af?? You were not put on this earth to be miserable until the day you die, EVERYBODY has difficult placements, if you remain ignorant of it/avoid it, you will continue to live in ignorance and suffer from the same things you always have and not know why.
Astrology makes it possible for you to understand yourself and evolve.
5. I'm not Hindu, can I still worship Gods/Goddesses/chant mantras?
Every single religion is made up. God never said only brown people from the Indian subcontinent can worship me. But that said, do your research and actually be invested in it. I feel like some people approach this in a Buzzfeed-y "Which Disney Princess Am I?😍" type of way which is 🤦🏻♀️but religion isn't something to be sampled, if ykwim?
You don't have to attain Guru levels of religious insight/expertise either. Most practicing Hindus probably know very little about their religion and truth be told, Hinduism is soooo vast, expansive, varied and eclectic that people practice it in thousands of different ways across the country with their own unique rituals/customs, so everybody who practices the religion makes it their own, in some ways?
Build an altar if you can, dedicate a certain time of the day and space of your room/house to just prayer. By making something sacred, we feel its divinity permeate our lives. Rituals are a major part of every religion because acting with intention helps us feel like our lives have meaning.
Always chant after you've showered, sit facing east, look at a picture of your deity or visualise them and chant quietly. Most people use prayer beads but you can also just count them on your fingers. Its often said that when you chant, others should not be able to hear you. If you use prayer beads, keep them covered in a box after use. You've energetically charged them with your chanting and its not good to leave them exposed because they'll pick up on other vibrations from the surroundings. Do not chant after you've just eaten!!
Picking a deity is all about intuition. If you don't feel called to anybody, just chill out and keep studying their mythology. You can always chant 'Om'.
I used to chant Buddhist mantras like 'Om mani padme hum' and 'nam myoho renge kyo' and they're not directed to any deity so if you're worried about that, you can always chant non-deity mantras as well.
The purpose of chanting mantras is to keep your mind calm and still. Even if you repeat a certain affirmation in English several hundred times, it has the same effect.

Know Yourself. How to?
Know yourself. How many times have you heard this? You might even have been told to do so. It is true that it's important. When you buy the latest gear, you are happy to find the instruction leaflet. But as for us, we were not born with an instruction manual. We are on our own to find out how we work. You may wonder why some people naturally find their way in life, thus successfully thriving, while some others don't. You might be likely to belong to that last category of people. And it's great. Because while you are searching about who you are, you end up learning a lot about the others. There are many ways to know how you function. To be honest, there is no universal solution. Because we are all made up differently, we don't process the information the same way. In other words, a technique will suit us better than someone else. For example, some will swear only by the MBTI Types, which is a pretty good model, but you might not be satisfied. So, you have no choice but do research on your own, test the methods you find and you will come across this ultimate technique. This ultimate technique will illuminate your life more or less drastically, according to the period or emotional phase you are going through right now... Because let's not forget... The human psyche changes over time. As for me, the ultimate technique had been astrology (as well as numerology) or to be more precise, Jyotish or Vedic Astrology which is the Indian version of astrology. So now, let's get practical: what are the indicators to find yourself in a chart? *Disclaimer: use the sidereal astrology (Lahiri) and the whole sign system. You can find it on astro.com. I would recommend the free website drikpanchang in Jyotish, Kundali tabs to get your Indian chart. I. In your D1/birthchart, you have to look at the positions in signs, nakshatras, houses of and how they are aspected: Your ascendant or lagna The Lord of your ascendant or Lagna Lord (LL) The Moon The Sun The Atma Karaka or AK, the significator of your soul The Arudha Lagna or AL too because it represents the way people see you which will shape the way you see yourself. II. Then, you look at the heart of these indicators which are found in D9 or Navamsha. This is the inner you that will gradually show itself or maybe, it had already shown itself. III. Last but not least, look at your current Maha Dasha or MD. It corresponds to your current period of life. This planet doesn't only influence your material life, it also has a deep emotional and psychological impact. For example, a Saturn (or Shani) MD is not like a Moon (Chandra) MD. A Shani MD person will be into dealing with harsh reality continuously, they will work more but they will take the hit better. A Moon MD person will have more desires, will be more sensitive, more moody. If your MD planet is the Lord of the 1st house, than you'll be much more likely to find who you are. The same goes with the 8th house Lord, which is about transformation; to some extent the 2nd house Lord because it's about self-worth but not so much regarding the 6th house Lord for example, which is all about health, routine, enemies, unless this Lord is your AK! IV. Extra tips: you can even have a look at your D30 chart to know your psychological issues and flaws. Beware of Rahu and Ketu because they can falsify the way you see yourself. Who knows? It's up to you to find. Nobody can tell you who you are. People can give you a couple of clues that you have to analyze using your experiences in the past and so on. I hope this post will help you out, at least, help you clarifying on how to proceed. I will publish the usual meanings of astrological positions soon. Until then, take care.

Canada’s National Indigenous Peoples Day
Learn about the various cultures and traditions of Canada’s Indigenous People, or join an event or ceremony to see how they have been preserved over time.
The culture, language and social systems of the original inhabitants of our world have had a significant impact on how we live our lives today. Canada’s National Indigenous Peoples Day is all about focusing on the contribution that these groups have made to our societies and helping people to learn about their heritage and culture. By celebrating this day, we can help keep Indigenous languages, traditions and culture alive for future generations.
Learn About Canada’s National Indigenous Peoples Day
The day officially first began in Canada in 1996, to celebrate the contributions and history of the Métis, Inuit and First Nation peoples. Since then, the day has been observed and celebrated internationally. Originally organized on the Summer Solstice (when the different peoples sometimes celebrate their heritage on the longest day of the year), the day’s events often include traditional feasts from each Indigenous People, festivals, dances, and the opportunity for people of all ages to learn about traditions, spiritual beliefs and culture. You might be lucky enough to see a sacred fire extinguishing ceremony or participate in a feast with a traditionally prepared meal.
It’s all about bringing people together from different walks of life to share in the contributions of Indigenous People to our society. You’ll find an eclectic mix of contemporary and traditional music while learning about how Indigenous Peoples helped to develop our agriculture, language and social customs. The day is also about how governments are creating crucial partnerships with Indigenous Peoples to protect their land, heritage and culture in modern times.
You can all get involved as the website has educational material for the whole family. There are also awareness events hosted in schools and local communities. If people want to get more involved they can even submit their ideas to get them registered as part of the event, so there are hundreds of opportunities to get involved. It also forms part of more extensive celebrations over an entire month that includes days like Multiculturalism Day and overall, aims to celebrate people from all walks of life and culture.
History of Canada’s National Indigenous Peoples Day
The day was officially recognized in Canada by the Governor-General of Canada Roméo LeBlanc in 1996. A year earlier in 1995, the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples put forward the idea for the day to be created. The Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples was a Commission put forward to reconcile the relationship between the Métis, Inuits and First Nation peoples and the Canadian Government. In 1996, Aboriginal Day was born, later changed to Canada’s National Indigenous Peoples Day in 2017.
In 1995, it wasn’t just the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples that suggested the day should be celebrated. A team of non-Indigenous and Indigenous peoples gathered and named themselves the Sacred Assembly. Chaired by Elijah Harper (Canadian Politician and Chief of the Red Sucker Lake First Nations) they called for a day for Indigenous Peoples to be celebrated and recognized for their contributions to our society. In 1982, what is now known as the Assembly of First Nations, set the path for the creation of this day, which led to Quebec recognizing the day as early as 1990.
However, there has been chatter about creating this day since 1945, when the day was first termed as ‘Indian Day’ by First Nation Chiefs, led by Jules Sioui. Jules Sioui was part of Huron Wendake First Nation and led two conventions during World War II which started to challenge the rights of Indigenous Peoples. The first meeting was chaired in 1943 in Ottawa and was attended by 53 people. The conference grew remarkably, and in 1944 was attended by four times as many people. Since then calls for a day of recognition have gained increasing traction and popularity.
Meanwhile, in late-1970s America, an International Conference began to suggest that America should host a celebration of its Indigenous peoples on Columbus Day. In 1989, it was first celebrated by South Dakota, and by 2019 was observed by multiple towns and states, including Louisiana, Dallas and Vermont. Brazil has also been celebrating since 1943, by decree of the then President, Getúlio Vargas. The UN also launched International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples in 1994, celebrating worldwide contributions from global Indigenous populations.
The United Nations had issued a Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) in 2007, which aimed to create a global framework for the preservation, dignity and well-being of each Indigenous culture. This process started in 1982, when the UN created the Working Group on Indigenous Populations, to discuss the discrimination that Indigenous Peoples had faced worldwide.
How To Celebrate Canada’s National Indigenous Peoples Day
This is the perfect time to learn about different Indigenous Peoples and their cultures and traditions. For example, in Canada, this day celebrates the First Nations, Inuit and Métis cultures. Why not learn about the Michif language of the Métis, or find out more about the storytelling traditions of the Inuits? Learning about the separate cultures will help us to understand how each independent group contributed to many of the things in society we take for granted today.
Why not get involved in a local event and participate in a traditional feast or watch a sacred ceremony? Dive right in and download some of the online material – why have some fun with family and friends and learn about Indigenous Peoples in the process? If you don’t have an event near you, why not host your own and reach out to the local Indigenous community for some assistance.
Learning about the history of Indigenous Peoples is also part of understanding why a day of celebration is so vital for preserving cultures today. From land disputes to reconciling with Governments across the world, the story for all Indigenous People has not been an easy one.
Luckily now we can preserve and enjoy all Indigenous cultures and appreciate the vast contribution that has been and is still being made today. So get stuck in, participate in a traditional event and learn all you can about different cultures. Help us send a big thank you to the original inhabitants of our planet for making it what it is today.

People of conscience around the world are rightfully shattered, enraged, and sometimes feeling powerless. Many feel compelled to boycott any and all products and services of companies tied in any way to Israel. The proliferation of extensive “boycott lists” on social media is an example of this. The question is how to make boycotts effective and actually have an impact in holding corporations accountable for their complicity in the suffering of Palestinians? The BDS movement uses the historically successful method of targeted boycotts inspired by the South African anti-apartheid movement, the US Civil Rights movement, the Indian anti-colonial struggle, among others worldwide. We must strategically focus on a relatively smaller number of carefully selected companies and products for maximum impact. Companies that play a clear and direct role in Israel’s crimes and where there is real potential for winning, as was the case with, among others, G4S, Veolia, Orange, Ben & Jerry’s and Pillsbury. Compelling such huge, complicit companies, through strategic and context-sensitive boycott and divestment campaigns, to end their complicity in Israeli apartheid and war crimes against Palestinians sends a very powerful message to hundreds of other complicit companies that “your time will come, so get out before it’s too late!” Many of the prohibitively long lists going viral on social media do the exact opposite of this strategic and impactful approach. They include hundreds of companies, many without credible evidence of their connection to Israel’s regime of oppression against Palestinians, making them ineffective. That being said, all peaceful popular efforts, including boycott and divestment, to hold all genuinely complicit corporations (and institutions) accountable for supporting Israel’s grave violations of Palestinian rights are justified and called for. It is perfectly legitimate, for instance, to boycott companies whose Israeli branch or franchise has supported Israel’s unfolding genocide in Gaza, some of which we mention below in the grassroots organic boycott targets section. Also, a company or product may make perfect sense as a boycott target in one context or city but not another. This context-sensitivity is a key principle of our movement. Regardless, we all have limited human capacity, so we’d better use it in the most effective way to achieve meaningful, sustainable results that can truly contribute to Palestinian liberation. We therefore call on our supporters to strengthen our targeted campaigns and boycott the complicit companies named on our website to maximize our collective impact. The following are the current top priority boycott targets of the global BDS movement.

There is a lot of misinformation regarding the boycott for Palestine right now and I wanted to do my best to educate people who were unaware.
There is the BDS movement and Palestinians have said that this is the boycott list we should be ultimately focusing on. "The BDS movement uses the historically successful method of targeted boycotts inspired by the South African anti-apartheid movement, the US Civil Rights movement, the Indian anti-colonial struggle, among others worldwide."
Starbucks is not apart of their boycott campaign and although yes, there is other boycott lists that people have supported, we need to listen as allies for Palestine and follow this movement instead. The reason most people are boycotting Starbucks was for the fact they sued their union and have been illegally shutting down these unions by not allowing employees to protest or to show support for Palestine in their stores. The issue is (supposedly) not because Starbucks funds Israel, there has been no apparent sources for this. Palestinians have not referred Starbucks as a zionist company, however, due to their mistreatment of their staff and not allowing them to be Pro-Palestine, it is exactly why their company has been boycotted. Although, boycotting Starbucks is not benefitting Palestinians, but it will benefit the Starbucks' Union & employees. If the BDS movement adds Starbucks to one of the 4 lists, then please proceed with following their instructions.
The reason why its not helpful for boycotting companies that aren't on the list is because it defeats the purpose of a targeted boycott, it is disorganized. The more people focus on a smaller number of brands to boycott, the larger the impact will be.

As for McDonald's, it is considered a Organic Boycott Target: "The BDS movement did not initiate these grassroots boycott campaigns but is in support of them due to these brands openly supporting Israel’s genocide against Palestinians".
On this website it will also state that some companies need pressure, not boycotting. Google is one of the pressure and non boycott targets. For example, as a university student, it is necessary for me to use Google because my student account system automatically requires us to use Gmail. You are allowed to use these non boycott targets, but should not endorse them. "We have not, on strategic grounds, called for a boycott of these brands and services, instead we strategically call on supporters and institutions to mount other forms of pressure on them until they end their complicity in Israeli apartheid."
The goal for pressuring and boycotting is for companies to stop being complicit in the genocide of Palestine. If a company retracts it's statement and goes from Pro-Israel to Pro-Palestine, this is a good thing and that is the result that Palestinians want. We can still actively avoid and boycott these companies for moral reasons, but for wanting companies to be "canceled" or end it's business, is not what Palestinians are asking us to do. These larger businesses have the necessary funds & pull to help support Palestine and we have to keep pressuring them to be on their side.
It is also important to not center boycotting around celebrities, influencers, and athletes or treat it as if it's a trend. It is not for you to make you feel better about yourself. Or to attack other people as well. Being outraged in a person's comment sections for having a coffee cup that isn't even from Starbucks is not serving Palestinians justice. Only boycott and pressure these companies with the intention of supporting Palestinian lives and for their right to receive their land back.
Also please be aware that there is other countries experiencing genocide such as Congo, Sudan, and more. It is best not to apply the same methods from Palestine movements to these countries, but instead find sources that are factual and boycott lists that will help these countries' specific needs.

SpaceX to Offer Subscription Service for Nations Not Wanting to Be Destroyed by Meteors

"SpaceX Plus will offer satellite internet, additional oxygen for space-stations, and first-pick of MarsX colony dormo-pods, all for the low price of $200,000,000 per year. Furthermore, our asteroid deflection services will going forward be an exclusive part of the SpaceX Plus subscription," read the notice atop the SpaceX website on Friday. Not all users are happy.
"We earned our asteroid protection," says EU defense chief Hans Gribbenschmidt. "Now that asteroid protection can just be bought, any colony can be preserved from the random violence of the cosmos. People will get confused, and won't be able to tell apart backwaters from places that actually matter, like Europe, Australia and New Zealand, North America north of the Rio Grande, parts of South Africa and maybe Japan."
Others, however, are enthusiastic. Said Indian president Narendra Modi on the social-media site X (formerly Twitter), "Something went wrong. If this issue persists please contact us through our help center at help.openai.com." India has already subscribed at the lower tier of SpaceX Plus, "SpaceX Plus Economy," which is cheaper but does not come with space-station resupplies, and protection from the hailstones of God only covers 75% of the subscriber. "That's all we need. Punjab and Bengal we could honestly take or leave. And we figured we'd skip on Rajasthan and Gujarat too, since if a meteor lands far enough west it might kill some Pakistanis," says BJP spokesman Chandan Sankaran.
However, in response to communtiy backlash, SpaceX mascot Elon Musk in an announcement Monday walked back part of the new policy. "After a review of societal and genetic purity, previous asteroid-defense holders will be 'grandfathered in' and retain their status at no cost, but without additional subscriber benefits." Musk did not respond to questions about whether subscribers would no longer have advertisements in the night sky.
Facts! reached out to the governments of Colombia, Nigeria, Sudan, Yemen and Bangladesh, whom along with India are possible impact sites of the recently-discovered Asteroid 2024-YR4, projected to have a 4% probability of striking Earth in 2032 with the force of a large thermonuclear bomb. "The President [Tinubu] believes such a subscription is unnecessary," says Nigerian Chief Press Secretary Joshua Arinze. "If this asteroid does become a threat to him, he can simply leave Nigeria for much much less than 200 million."

Blog Post Due 4/10
What is striking vs boycotting?
When I came up with this question I thought it was kind of stupid. They are related but have different meanings. To go on strike is the stopping of work or a withdrawal of workers by putting pressure on their employers to ignite change about their terms and conditions set by that employer. To boycott is to make people stop buying or using products or services in order to make a statement. These forms of protests are so powerful in numbers. For example, a day without immigrants was kind of both actually and protesters happened to shut down the 101 freeway.
Why is it that native americans are treated less than other minorities?
This is a pretty open ended question and many of you can have different answers. I think Native American/Indigenous people are treated less than other minorities because of how some cultures make them feel completely invisible, it’s really disheartening. Our guest speaker Nicholet Parkhurst mentioned the outreach program MMIW: Missing, Murder, and Indigenous Women. Murder is the 3rd leading cause of death in Native women. On the MMIW website there is a statistic that states, “The National Crime Information Center reports that, in 2016, there were 5,712 reports of missing American Indian and Alaska Native women and girls, though the US Department of Justice’s federal missing persons database, NamUs, only logged 116 cases”.
I’m also not trying to downplay the missing and murders of other minorities but there is a significant difference in Native Americans.
What are misrepresentations about Native Americans that were taught in school ?
First of all, we were taught that Christopher Coloumbus discovered America. Then growing up, everyone realized that was incorrect. Native Americans had been living in America for years before he showed up. I also remember hearing that the Natives were ‘savages’ mainly because of cultural differences. I feel like colonizers refused to try to understand their culture and were power hungry. When Native Americans were defending their land, that reinforced the belief that colonizers thought they were dangerous.
How does the Dakota Pipeline affect the Natives?
There are plenty of reasons how the Dakota Pipeline affects the Natives that were still fighting for. First off, it is sacred land. For example, the Standing Rock and its burial ground. Second, it will affect the water supply of millions of people by contaminating it with the project itself. Which leads me to my third point, environmental integrity. By contaminating the water supply, you are disrupting the ecosystems, therefore impacting the culture of the Natives traditional hunting, fishing, and etc.
Native Hope. (n.d.). Missing and murdered Indigenous women (MMIW). Native Hope.

In 2017, Pratik Sinha and Mohammed Zubair cofounded the fact-checking website AltNews in India. Almost immediately, the pair were targeted with persistent and vicious attacks from the far-right news website OpIndia. Many of the attacks claimed that Zubair was a Rohingya Muslim who illegally migrated to India and that his cousin was a rapist. In several headlines, the site described Zubair as an “Islamist” spreading fake news.
This wasn’t far off from OpIndia’s other coverage: In addition to routinely attacking journalists and news sites critical of the government, OpIndia spreads conspiracies and, at times, outright disinformation, particularly about the country’s minority Muslim population. Founded in 2014, OpIndia is regularly name-checked by leading lawmakers in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and the site admits it is funded in part by ads run by the BJP. As hundreds of millions of Indians vote in elections across the country, critics fear that OpIndia’s election-related disinformation and overt support of the Modi government could further undermine trust in the democratic process. Already, the website has echoed Modi’s widely criticized description of the Muslim vote as “vote jihad.”
Yet despite this, US tech companies, which have rules against hate speech and disinformation, continue to platform OpIndia and, in some cases, allow it to continue to make money through advertising. OpIndia has a robust presence on Facebook, Instagram, and X. Additionally, a new report, shared exclusively with WIRED, has found that Google’s ad platform is being used to partially fund OpIndia’s operation.
“In an increasingly polarized space, they create a vicious narrative against you,” Sinha tells WIRED. “All of this is narrative building. Their job is to defame anyone who's critical of the government, and that's what they do.”
Despite repeated efforts by activists to defund the site—and the fact that publications that have partnered with a Google-supported election fact-checking initiative, Shakti, have fact-checked OpIndia’s articles and found it routinely publishes fake news—OpIndia continues to operate thanks in part to ads that Google’s ad exchange platform places next to its content. In 2019, Poynter’s International Fact Checking Network, which accredits publications as trustworthy arbiters of information, rejected OpIndia’s application.
“Google’s own publisher policies prohibit the monetization of content that incites hatred, incitement of racism, promoting discrimination of an individual or group,” says Sarah Kay Wiley, director of policy and partnerships at Check My Ads, a nonprofit digital advertising watchdog organization and author of the new report. “Google also says that they don't monetize or work with publishers that make claims that are false and could significantly undermine trust in an election or democratic process.”
Ad exchanges allow publishers to sell ad space and advertisers to buy it through an entirely automated process that happens in the split seconds before a website loads. Ad sellers and buyers set limits for price and spending, with Google taking a cut of all transactions. Because of the automated nature of the process, advertisers likely don’t realize that their products are showing up next to hateful and misleading content.
Other ad exchanges such as Magnite have discontinued working with OpIndia. If Google were to stop working with OpIndia, says Wiley, that “would definitely have a material impact.”
On Facebook, OpIndia runs pages in English and Hindi, with 310,000 followers and 431,000 followers in each language, respectively. Both pages list their administrator as Aadhyaasi Media and Content Services Private Limited, which owns OpIndia.
On its Hindi page, OpIndia has shared stories promoting the “love jihad” conspiracy theory, which asserts that Muslim men are trying to marry, seduce, or kidnap Hindus in order to force them to convert and create a demographic shift in Hindu-majority India, and has promoted false claims, including that a new inheritance law would reallocate wealth from Hindus to Muslims. Meta spokesperson Erin McPike did not comment on whether this content violated Meta’s policies, nor on whether Meta takes into account the violations of the Hindi page when assessing the English page.
These narratives then get picked up and spread on other platforms, like X and Telegram, says Siddharth Venkataramakrishnan, an analyst with the Institute for Strategic Dialogue. “In some of these places there’s even more explicit calls for violence against Muslims or for the removal of Muslims,” he says. The site has international appeal as well: WIRED was able to find OpIndia articles shared in non-Indian, right-wing channels on Telegram, including a pro-Kremlin channel with over 1.3 million subscribers and numerous conspiracy channels with hundreds of thousands of followers.
The site is also highly active on the social media platform X with the official OpIndia account, which has 688,000 subscribers. OpIndia appears to pay for X Premium, giving it a blue checkmark, but did not respond to whether it subscribes to the service. WIRED has identified at least half a dozen OpIndia writers, columnists, and editors, including editor in chief Nupur Sharma, who has more than 680,000 followers, who appear to be subscribed to X Premium.
Sharma did not respond to a question about OpIndia monetizing its content via X Premium, and the company itself also failed to respond.
“It’s a hyper-partisan, right-wing outlet that set themselves up by saying that mainstream news media in India have a liberal bias, very similar to what American right-wing outlets say about professional journalism in America,” says Kalyani Chadha, an associate professor at the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University who published an in-depth report in 2020 on India’s right-wing media ecosystem that included OpIndia. “They bill themselves as a news outlet, but there's not a lot of original reporting. A lot of it is commentary and opinion.”
In addition to Sinha and Zubair, OpIndia has regularly targeted journalists and outlets it sees as “far left.” In one piece, the site’s staff listed the Indian journalists and publications supposedly associated with billionaire George Soros, who has long been the target of conspiracies from the global far right. In another, they attacked veteran journalist Ravish Kumar, falsely accusing him of harboring sympathies for the perpetrators of a 2019 rape case. OpIndia has also spent years attacking Raqib Hameed Naik, an Indian journalist and the founder of India Hate Lab, which documents instances of hate speech and conspiracies that target India’s minority communities. This, he says, was made all the harder by government officials sharing the articles.
“The goal is to amplify this disinformation, and you have BJP leaders sharing this, so people think it’s authentic,” says Naik. “In the long term, this kind of builds the case against a critic, a journalist, that this person is bad, because there is reporting against them.”
When WIRED contacted OpIndia for comment, Sharma responded to our emailed questions by posting her responses on X.
When asked about hate speech and disinformation on her site, Sharma wrote: “Our critics are mostly Islamists, Jihadis, Terrorists, Leftists and their sympathizers—like yourself. We don't particularly care about any of them.” She then added that “Islamophobia does not exist” and pointed to an OpIndia article that outlines her position. Sharma added that it was “none of your concern” when asked if OpIndia was funded by the BJP. Sharma’s post also tagged one of the authors of this story, who then faced a torrent of abuse from Sharma’s followers.
For years, activists and researchers have tried to highlight the problematic content published by OpIndia. A 2020 campaign from UK-based advocacy group Stop Funding Hate led to a number of advertisers removing their ads from the site. Google, however, says the content published on the site does not appear to breach its own rules.
"All sites in our network, including Opindia, must adhere to our publisher policies, which explicitly prohibit ads from appearing alongside content promoting hate speech, violence, or demonstrably false claims that could undermine trust or participation in an election,” Google spokesperson Michael Aciman says. “Publishers are also subject to regular reviews, and we actively block or remove ads from any violating content."
Despite this, users can find ads for Temu or the Palm Beach Post next to many OpIndia articles promoting conspiracies and Islamophobia, placed with the help of ad-exchange platforms like Google’s Ad Manager, which is the market leader.
Facebook, meanwhile, says Wiley, is more of a “walled garden.” Once a publisher meets the company’s criteria for monetization, including having more than 1,000 followers, it can earn money from ads that run on the page.
While researchers that spoke to WIRED were unable to tell exactly how much the site has made from Google Ads and Facebook monetization, they said it’s likely that OpIndia is not solely reliant on the ad exchange for its revenue. It appears that, as with many news outlets in India, part of that funding comes in the form of more traditional advertising from a major client: the government.
“A large section of India's mainstream press depends on the government ads for their survival,” says Prashanth Bhat, professor of media studies at the University of Houston. “That revenue is critical for the mainstream media survival in a hypercompetitive media environment like in India. We have about 400 round-the-clock television news channels in India in different languages, and we have over 10,000 registered newspapers. For them to survive, they definitely need government patronage.”
Sharma confirmed that OpIndia is reliant in part on ads from the government. “Literally every media house gets advertising from various political parties,” said Sharma. “In fact, a part of your salary could also be funded by such parties and/or their sympathizers. Do get down from your high horse.”
The BJP has, however, also sought to help OpIndia in other ways. In 2019, the BJP reached out to Meta directly, asking the company to allow OpIndia to monetize on Facebook. Meta spokesperson McPike told WIRED that OpIndia’s English page is still able to monetize but that monetization on its Hindi page is currently not allowed “due to violations of our policies.”
“In order to monetize on Facebook, Pages must comply with our community standards, our partner monetization policies, and our content monetization policies,” McPike says.
Google did not respond to questions from WIRED about whether it had ever received a similar request from the Indian government. Google’s Aciman says, “As we do with all publishers, we’ve taken prior page-level enforcement action on this site when we’ve found policy violations. We will of course continue to enforce our policies on violating content across our publisher network.”
X did not respond to questions about whether OpIndia and its staff are able to monetize through X Premium or whether the company has ever received requests from the government to restore content from OpIndia or its staff. The company has complied with several takedown requests from the Indian government to ban accounts or tweets critical of the government.
But Wiley says that without transparency on the part of tech companies as to how they’re deciding which organizations are able to earn money through ads—and how much—outlets like OpIndia will continue to fall through the cracks.
“The business model of the internet at the end of the day is advertising, and what we're seeing over and over again is, that business model is broken,” she says. “Advertisers don't know where their money is going. And the biggest issue is that a lot of that is being funneled to mis- and disinformation online.”

Yoga is an Indian spiritual and physical practice or discipline that dates back to prehistoric times. Contrary to what some people may think, yoga is not just about exercise with the primary goal of improving health and well-being, but it is also about self-actualization.
The importance of yoga in our lives cannot be underestimated. It is a science that focuses on improving not only physical health but also mental and spiritual well-being, which are the basis of our life.
You will be surprised to know how many health benefits yoga provides. From relieving stress and weight management to improving your overall health, this ancient practice can help you live a perfect life.
A brief look at yoga:- Yoga is an ancient art that has helped millions of people around the world achieve better physical and mental health.
Nowadays everyone uses it, especially those who suffer from stress and back pain. Yoga is generally considered to be related to physical exercise, but yoga is not just exercise. Yoga also strengthens and heals a person's mind and leads him to live a better life. The best yoga websites will guide you through the right poses for your body, helping you improve your health in ways you never imagined before.
The yoga trend is increasing all over the world. One of the main reasons for its popularity is that even doctors recommend yoga to their patients. Yoga is being widely studied by scientists and has been shown to calm and relax both the mind and body and uplift the spirit. This is an extraordinary discipline to have a good mind and stay healthy.
Importance of yoga mental benefits:- Apart from the physical benefits, one of the best benefits of yoga is how it helps a person manage mental health. Most importantly, yoga helps deal with stress, which has devastating effects on the body and mind. According to Dr. Nevins, "Stress can manifest itself in a variety of ways, including back or neck pain, sleep problems, headaches, drug abuse, and inability to concentrate." Yoga can be very effective in developing coping skills. This practice helps people achieve a more positive outlook on their lives.
Iincreased concentration:- Better concentration is one of the many benefits of a calm mind. People who have survived modern life know the importance of concentration as they are often busy with multiple tasks. Meditation is a powerful practice for sharpening concentration. In meditation, whenever your mind wanders, you direct your attention to your breath, a mantra, or an image.
Strength and flexibility:- A sedentary lifestyle causes many physical health problems, such as limited flexibility, low strength, poor posture, stiffness, and much more. Performing yoga asanas encourages movement of the body in different directions, helps to open up which reduces stiffness, increases joint mobility and releases repressed emotions which leads to strength and flexibility.
Increased strength and flexibility are important for healthy maintenance of muscles, tissues and ligaments.
Discipline and caution in life. By applying the Yamas and Niyamas written in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, you invite greater discipline and mindfulness into your life. The five Yamas and Niyamas are moral rules for living a virtuous life.
Respecting this ethic throughout life means being conscious in every action, acting with compassion and living in the present moment.
Final word:- Yoga is rightly called "the science of living in harmony with oneself and the world": it not only helps keep our body in shape but also helps keep our mind and soul active. This practice combines body, mind and spirit and allows us to be happy, peaceful and content by changing our attitude, behavior and approach towards life. It makes us more positive, optimistic and happy.
