Choso is most definitely a bassist. His entire personality screams bass player.
Unlike the guitar, the bass isn’t the first sound to be picked up by your ears. You have to feel the bass. It shakes the very ground you walk on, cementing its sound into every step you take, becoming one with you.
A good bassline can transform an entire song, giving its melody depth and richness–that’s Choso for you.
He’s a bit understated, letting the rest of the members of the band take the lead when it comes to the spotlight. His role is to be the solid foundation for their music.
Choso is the quiet and mysterious one–the personification of tall, dark, and handsome.
He has an Instagram account only out of obligation and only posts when a song or album releases and when they’re going on tour.
No one knows shit about Choso, only who his brothers are–the ones who are in the band at least….and Yuuji because Yuuji brags about him all the time.
He’s fiercely protective over his peace and privacy. He loves music and doesn’t want to bastardize his art by cutting it up and processing it through the machine that is the industry.
That being said, not a single person in the public eye knows about you. They may know that he’s in a relationship, but they won’t know with who. Choso strives to keep you away from the vultures of social media. He guards your peace and privacy with a great honor.
He is incredibly polite and chivalrous, very pleasant to work with. But if you cross his boundaries, his personality immediately switches.
He’s not above getting snappy with fans who get too handsy or curious with him.
Back to his social media; if he’s not promoting their work, he’s telling said parasocial fans to “fuck off”. No one can even hate him for it.
He’s the big brother, the leader behind the scenes, the one who makes sure everyone has their shit together. As much as he loves that role, it puts a lot of pressure on him.
That being said, he’s a stoner for sure. This rockstar boyfie has a lot weighing on him. Weed keeps him from becoming too high-strung. Helps with his creative process too since when he’s high, he’s the most honest with himself.
Very sensitive and emotional, which is unexpected by most.
Choso feels a lot. He always has. As the eldest of a shit ton of siblings with a shitty father, he had to feel everything for his siblings to shield them from traumatization the best he could. It’s one of the main reasons why he pursued music. Music is practically the only outlet for him to full express his emotions.
That being said, he’s a little rough around the edges when it comes to vulnerability.
When he meets you, your relationship is passionate, intense, and fast.
He pretty much knows he’s in love with you the very moment he meets you. He has met a lot of people and knows how to get a good read on someone’s personality and character–he knew you were it for him.
That scared him a lot though. He’s never loved someone so much and he doesn’t quite know how to handle it.
Can be insecure sometimes. Definitely has an anxious attachment style that he is actively working to change, but he’s not a perfect man. He messes up.
If he’s away on tour for too long, his mind ends up racing with irrational thoughts and worries. Hearing your voice soothes all those thoughts away.
He really doesn’t want to perpetuate the toxic cycles he has been subject to, so just know your man is trying his best.
Loves fashion. His artistic lens isn’t just limited to music. Style is an outlet for expression that Choso holds in high regard.
Very down to earth. He’s often spotted taking walks and grabbing snacks from local convenience stores at ungodly hours when he can’t sleep, but most fans respect him and don’t take pictures.
Very cutesy. After a long day, he just wants to snuggle up with you and watch Studio Ghibli movies.
Sex is absolutely raunchy though. Yes, he’s rough around the edges when it comes to verbalizing his vulnerability, but he definitely doesn’t struggle doing so physically.
With every thrust, that man conveys his love for you…it’s a lot of love.
If you’re okay with it, and only if you’re okay with it, he’ll get completely carried away.
He can grip your hips and thighs so tight that he leaves behind little fingertip bruises. He can overstimulate both you and himself whenever he’s lost in you–you’ve blacked out during sex at least once.
Think you can’t squirt? There’s a chance that he can make you.
A vocal lover for sure. His therapist told him not to censor his thoughts and he took that shit very seriously–not a single moan, grunt, growl, whimper, or dirty thought will be held back.
That being said he will do the filthiest things to you, debauched acts that you can’t even say out loud, but as soon as it’s over this little shit will look at you with the softest puppy-like expression and be like “Can we order ramen and watch ‘Ponyo’?”
There’s a big misconception that Choso doesn’t play a role in songwriting and that the band’s lead singer writes all the songs.
However, Choso is quite the writer and poet.
No, Noranso is not in love.
But he’ll let fans think that as he plays with a soft smile on his face.

I Can See You

Pt. 11/ Pt.12/Pt.13/Pt. 14/Pt.15/Pt.16/Pt.17/END
Mariana Jimenez-Watson or MJ works in a normal pub living life paycheck to paycheck. Nothing exciting happens to her except the occasional drunk getting thrown out. She's 24 working away and finds a wrench thrown into her very boring life. His name is Hobie and she thinks maybe, a little excitement isn't awful. In fact she might start to crave some change for once.
Small moments of Hobie meeting his world's MJ. AKA I made an MJ variant and I think she's neat.
Chapter 3
She’s standing outside the pub waiting for Hobie to pick her up. She’s bouncing on her feet in excitement as she looks down the street seeing his silhouette.
His hands are shoved in his vest pockets as a crooked smile crosses his face when he sees her.
“I take it you're ready then?” He asks looking her over with an amused expression. She's practically vibrating with joy.
“Absolutely! I love this group, I didn’t even know they were in town.” She says smiling brightly at him.
Hobie’s eyes lazily look over her and she raises a brow. “What, is it there something on me?” She asks cocking her head.
“Nah, you just look good is all.” He says flicking a golden star on her dangling belt that’s attached to her skirt.  "Color compliments your skin."
She gives a quick spin in her outfit, showing off her skirt and some glitter flies off of her. “Thanks, wanted an excuse to wear some fun colors!” She snickers and starts walking down the street. “C’mon I don’t wanna be late.”
Hobie just gives a chuckle as he shakes his head and walks beside her comfortably.
The small rock show is playing inside one of the shitty abandoned buildings on the streets of Old York. The place is practically falling apart but that’s half the charm of it. Many bands have played shows there for years and it’s mostly safe. Occasionally a brick will fall but it’s usually not around people. It's in a warehouse that's in some old industrial district, MJ's been there for a few other shows and has always had a great time. This show is probably the biggest crowd she's seen at this venue.
The two of them make their way in and shove through the sea of people. MJ is practically vibrating in excitement and Hobie’s just watching her joy. She can feel his stare but when she turns to look he's just giving her the softest smile. It blossoms a warmth in her chest.
When the band walks out and starts playing the crowd roars to life. The building may be cramped but it’s fun and has electricity in the air. The band had brought a fog machine and the lights were bold colors of flashing pinks, yellows, and purples and it flood her senses. It's hot and sweaty as she dances and pulls Hobie along. He’s more than happy to join her, meeting her beat for beat.
The tight crowd makes it a little muggy but she doesn't care. Her olive tan skin is coating in a thin layer of sweat and she's scream singing along to the lyrics. Her hands are on Hobie's shoulders as she jumps to the beat just enjoying the night. Hobie's hands are on her waist as he holds her in place. Making sure she doesn't slam into anyone.
The ground shakes from the crowd dancing and singing together, but that’s normal. MJ has her head thrown back in laughter and joy, just enjoying her night. The people, noises, and lights over stimulating her in the best way.
Then the building starts to wobble. In a way that’s not a part of the music. It makes MJ trip over her own feet, Hobie catches her easily and they both look at each other in concern. She turns to look around and other people seemed to be stumbling as well. Even the band had stuttered in their music. Hobie’s hands move to graze her arm when another quake shakes them. The band keeps going and the rest of the crowd seems unphased at the second tremor.
MJ’s about to suggest they leave, feeling a pit in the bottom of her stomach. She's suddenly on edge and feels a shiver run down her spine when something crashes into the old building, shaking its structure causing parts to collapse. Hobie pushes MJ away from him and before she can yell to warn him. She narrowly misses the pillar that falls between them. Screams of panic disorient her and she can’t see past the smoke and dust kicking up. More tremors shake the ground and the building comes falling down in chunks.
“Hobie!” She screams, coughing and trying to find a way around the rubble separating them.
“I’m alright! Get out of here, I can’t climb over this. I’ll find you!” He shouts back.
Her body is telling her to run but she feels dread fill her at the idea of running off, “I’m not leaving without you!” She yells back, looking up over the fallen architecture.
The loud atmosphere of screams and falling debris almost deafens her. She can hear that there’s something flying around above them. She briefly wonders if it’s Spider-Man.
“I’m not asking you Mariana, I’m telling you to get out!” He shouts back, his tone leaving no room for an argument.
MJ freezes at him using her full name and she finds herself nodding even if he can’t see it. “Fine! But if you’re not outside in less than ten minutes, I’m coming back for you!” she yells her voice firm and determined.
She can almost see him shaking his head at her, “Got it.” He shouts back.
MJ turns to find an exit, she tries to follow the small amount of people who are left scattering. There had been a few more tremors and something exploding to cause a fire to start on the edge of the building. The fire licks at the feet of the brick walls tempting to trap the remaining people inside.
She’s trying to follow the crowd but upon turning the corner she’s come face to face with the culprit of the damage. She almost trips over her own feet as she back peddles to hide behind a piece of fallen wall.
The Vulture stands before her, hunching in on himself as he looks around. His movements are shaky and sporadic. He looks like a creature from a horror film with the way he moves his body. Her heart is racing as she realizes she’s stuck where she is until he moves. His body blocking the only exit she can make out, the fire blazing behind her.
“Arson I can handle, ruining a good show, that’s a real criminal offense.” She hears jokingly from above.
She looks up to see Spider-Man landing behind the Vulture, shooting his webs out and pulls the massive bird closer to him for a punch. She looks on in awe for a moment. She’s never been so close to an actual event like this and she’s frozen just watching him.
“Ugh, course it’s you.” The Vulture groans swatting his claws and cutting the webs.  He flies up and shouts, “That wasn’t music, that was a public nuisance! Like you.”
The Vulture shakes his metal wings, shooting some of the sharp fake feathers at Spider-Man. Spider-Man easily dodges them, dancing around the projectiles. “Trying to kill people for the sake of your own personal music tastes feels a little…bitter? Petty? Dontcha think.” He says in a mocking tone.
MJ sees Spider-Man look down at her. She knows she needs to move, but she’s just watching the two of them fight. Her eyes watch them and she looks to the exit, it’s still dangerous if she tries to run for it. The Vulture is blocking the only good exit near her and the last thing she wants to do is get caught and used as a hostage against Spider-Man.
Spider-Man had been staring at her, he even nudges his head to the exit, but she shakes her head no. While he’s distracted the Vulture is able to attack knocking the spider down and rolling into the rubble.
Her eyes widen and she tries to not gasp. She knows he was begging her to run but she couldn’t. Now he’s laying on a broken wall unmoving.
She shuffles, trying to run so she can just find Hobie and get out. The Vulture encroaching on Spider-Man.
His body doesn’t move and it worries her. She sighs and curses under her breath, she doesn't debate for long before she’s looking for a heavy piece of debris. She tosses a few in her hand before she lands on one she’s comfortable with and looks over at the Vulture. His arm is raised toward the spider on the ground and she doesn’t think twice about chucking the heavy brick in her hand hitting the metal bird man directly in the head.
She ducks quickly and hides, holding her breath.
“Who’s there?!” the voice roars and echoes around her.
A shiver runs down her back but she tries to silently escape, hoping the smoke and dust will hide her. She just needs to give Spider-Man enough time. He had to be fine. He’s handled worse before.
“Who are you calling for, falling rocks? It’s almost like you knocked down a whole building.” A voice chuckles lightly from the distance.
She lets out a breath of relief and watches Spider-Man shoot webs and flinging the Vulture across the building. She uses her chance to escape sprinting toward the open air.
Once she’s outside, she’s panting and hacking up a lung. She looks around the street seeing everyone from the show has either scattered or stayed to watch what they can only hope to see through the layers of smoke. She’s covered in dust and she tries to take deep breathes, not realizing how much smoke she had inhaled.
MJ is frantically looking around, trying to find Hobie. She can’t see him in the sparse crowd, and he was someone who stood out. If it wasn't his height as a dead give away it would be his wicks. She knows Hobie wouldn’t have left without her and she whips back around looking at the collapsing building in fear.  She bites her tongue making a collective decision to go back into the fire.
She takes a step forward but stops when she sees a silhouette walking toward her. She hopes and prays that it’s Hobie, but she just sees Spider-Man. She starts to feel her breathe quicken as panic sets in. Her body moves on its own as she rushes to go back into the thick smoke.
Spider-Man’s masked eyes widen and he reaches out quickly and grabs her shoulders stopping her from going back. “Hey, hey! It’s dangerous in there! Ya bonkers or what?” He shouts like she’s insane, which she probably is.
Her eyes are wild as she looks at him, tears brimming her eyes, “Please, I think my friend is still in there! I- I can’t find him.” She tells him, her voice is hitching and she starts to hyperventilate.
His grip tightens on her and he ducks his head to look her in the eyes. “I’ll find him if he’s in there okay? Promise.” He says softly.
Her eyes are trying to search for the truth but all she finds is the stark white of his masked eyes and she has to chose to trust him. It’s her only option.
“Please," her voice breaks  "you have to find him.” She whispers, begging him.
He releases her and gently pushes her back toward the edge of the street where it’s safe. She just watches his back as he goes back into the destroyed building. She watches until she physically can't see him past the smoke and fire.
She’s clenching her hands tightly, leaving marks in her palm as all she can do is wait.
She sees another silhouette make its way towards her and the outline of his wicks has her releasing a shaky breath from her lips.
She sprints towards him and wraps her arms tightly around, hugging him close. She shoves her face into his shoulder, “I thought you fucking died in there!” She chokes out gripping onto him.
She feels him tense up for a moment, but it lasts for a split second before he’s exhaling and holding her too.
“Sorry, sorry, I got trapped for a moment.” He says, voice hoarse from the smoke.
She finally let’s go and pulls away and squints looking back toward the building. “Where did Spider-Man go?” She asks.
“He’s looking for others, in case they’re stuck.” He quickly tells her, moving himself to stand in front of her line of sight. His own face is concerned as he looks her over, “Are you okay?” he asks.
“I, uh,” She blinks for a moment trying to collect her thoughts. “Yeah, yeah, I’m good. Just smoke in my lungs, but that’s nothing new.” She jokes with a light laugh.
He nods giving her a smile, “C’mon let’s get out of here. Place is falling apart.” He says as a joke and plants his hand firmly on her lower back guiding her away from the wreckage.

state of the Medium at the tail-end of the Long Wait
Derse
the Dersite royals got assassinated millenia ago, and the scattered habitats along the outer edge of the incipisphere (constructed of raw material both of deconstructed Derse and the asteroid belt of the Veil) are currently ruled by a couple dozen squabbling gangs and clans and cults in perpetual low-stakes war over resources and habitats (and a third thing ill come to later); they do however tend to mostly temporarily band together any time there's a threat from the the system's center
the mostly still intact but much changed moon with its 3 dreaming gods are a kind of collective holy site for many of the most important veil-cults, and is both untouchable as a holy site and a place of fierce competition (including a few cults who want to kill the dreamers to prevent the session from ever happening)
Prospit
the Prospitian king got assassinated by a Dersite from the Battlefield relatively early in the Wait, while the queen is legally still, though functionally comatose and kept alive only by means of jerry-rigged poorly understood technology copied and looted from the old asteroid belt; the actual ruling now happens via a complex bureaucracy of priest-engineers (the Phyllobatic Order) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_poison_frog)
notably the "royal" palace/temple complex is not located on Prosit proper anymore, instead being "relocated to" its moon, or rather it would be more accurate to say the moon *is* the palace at this point; the base of each Dreamer's tower seen as the most hallowed of places under Skaia's light (and each is guarded by a promising neophyte Phyllobate assigned Guardian of the door, a most honourable position);
Prospit itself is significantly bigger than at the start of the Wait, and between it and the detached moon orbit a host of other infrastructural projects of both civilian and military nature, and the entire orbital path of Prospit is strewn with habitat-cities and arcologies all the way around
The Battlefield
with no prototyping happening, the Battlefield remains a giant centerpiece of eternal stalemate; except of course the amount of players has increased, and the stakes have changed; because after the exhaustion of the asteroids of the Veil, the Battlefield is pretty much the only place in the Medium with unexploited raw resources
which brings us to the main tension between the city-ring of Prospit and the Gang-councils of the Veil; Prospit has the Battlefield seemingly locked down, but they're not actually in the advantage
and the reason is
Carapacian Biological Peculiarities
carapacians have no method of independent reproduction; they're *made*, ectobiologically, in the labs of the Meteor Veil
and that's the 3rd thing: means of reproduction; the Dersite Veil-habitats naturally have the vast majority of ectobiological equipment at their disposal
now, carapcians don't actually *age* like most species do either of course, but they do wear down, the have accidents, they can get sick (and as time and chance goes on, the amount of new sicknesses which had the opportunity to evolve has been increasing!), and so they do in fact still die
so without ectobiological equipment, no amount of raw resources will help in the long run
so while the Veil-Dersites tend to mostly focus on resource-extraction from the inner system for further expansion of their territory (as in, number of habitats and industry), the Prospitians fight mostly to acquire irreplicable ecto-tech from the Veil-Dersites, who in turn squabble over it between themselves, while everywhere various priest-engineers try and fail and try again to find a way to reverse-engineer the holy machines that birthed every single one of them (and the poor sods living on (or these days mostly beneath in subterranean cities of perpetual refugees on account of their usual complete lack of ecto-tech) the Battlefield just take the brunt of it, as usual)

The building the fisherman sent us to is a large warehouse sitting right on the edge of the water.
Tumblr media
Hm.
This oil-vs-blood thing is very strange. I'm still sticking with my theory that there's some fucked up Steel Watcher going around murdering people, but I don't think it's actually correct.
The warehouse is called Flymm Cargo, and its door is locked. Unlocking it reveals a bunch of dead goblins and some very, very angry worgs.
Tumblr media
Not pictured, a number of local refugees who panicked when the fight started, which is super reasonable, and ran straight INTO the building and disappeared, which is not.
Not a terribly difficult fight. The worgs were named Gristle, Snarrrl, Rrrripper, Snapp, and Cuddleface(!), and stayed mostly grouped up so Minsc's AOE throw with Nyrulna did a lot of work. Also tried having him throw Boo into the fray for the first time; I'm not positive it had any tactical benefit but it was quite satisfying to see Boo squeaking his way through the air and slamming into an enemy.
Minsc also shouted "Buttkicking for goodness!" which brought my heart a lot of joy.
The combination of Hector, Karlach, and Minsc really makes for a juggernaut team comp (with Jaheira often alongside as a panther bc I am being a disappointment to Zen's guidance and making her go murder kitty all the time even though it's not optimal). XD
The warehouse seems to be otherwise abandoned except for the aforementioned dead goblins, who I assume owned the worgs. Hector was able to perceive a trapdoor under some cargo containers which seems to be the only likely path forward.
This at first led to what seemed like a fairly nondescript basement until I realized that it is lined with what appear to be prison cells. O.o Not sure what Flymm Cargo is hauling but it seems maybe a smidge concerning.
Tumblr media
Thankfully there don't seem to be any people in any of the cells. (Or anything for that matter, except for one propaganda pamphlet about Gortash's new regime.) One small mystery solved, though - I now know where that "A Greasy, Smelly Climb Up..." area transition in the sewers would have led to:
Tumblr media
Lovely. Thankfully we don't have to go that way; there's one other main door out of this area.
Tumblr media
Hm. Machines that leak oil that looks like blood, perhaps?
Inside Machine Parts Storage we find:
Thieves' tools
Infernal iron (is there any point to carting this around anymore?)
Something called "G-Cube Lube"
Tumblr media
Gross. Please tell me that's not what all the grease down in the sewers was.
Further on... I think we might have hit the jackpot.
Tumblr media
...Is that a submarine? O.O
The area has one guard and is full of steaming pipes and cranking gears and seems very industrial compared to much of the city. There's a journal sitting on a desk in one corner:
Tumblr media
Hm. First of all - Clockwork Escape Kayak is my new rock band name. Second - I'm assuming the "Cap" is the submarine, and I'm guessing to that it has something to do with the attack on Holli. What else around here would have made the sort of big wake that the fisherman was describing?
The journal is labeled "Redhammer's Journal" and the man by the sub is named "Redhammer the Deviser" so I'm guessing he's the man in charge.
Tumblr media
"Oi, what's this? You ain't supposed to be down here, mate!"
Tumblr media
Narrator: You spot a curious metal contraption - a submersible.
Hector has a few more intimidating/conflict-oriented dialogues here, but to start with he's just going to sate his own curiosity until the man tries to throw him out physically. "That submersible - why is it here? What is this place?"
"The only port in this whole bleedin' city that matters," the dwarf answers, unhelpfully. "Now why are you here? Did Gortash send you?"
As usual, Hector has no interest in lying, nor would he be much good at it. "You killed one of those servants of Umberlee," he says matter-of-factly. "Now they want you dead."
The dwarf raises an eyebrow - wary, but not afraid. "Oh yeah? And are you here to make good on that?"
Tumblr media
Hector hesitates. Is he? Certainly he needs more information to know if he wants to kill this man in cold blood - his only true goals here are to impede Gortash's operation and to prevent any more innocent Umberlants from getting killed out in the water.
"I just want to know what happens in this port," he says firmly.
Tumblr media
"Nothing without Lord Gortash's go-ahead," Redhammer says impatiently. "I transport whoever he needs taken to the Iron Throne. It's an underwater prison - most secure in the Realms. Lord Gortash keeps some Gondians there. Collateral to keep those working in the Steel Watch Foundry under control."
Hector's eyes widen. Oh, shit...
His brain starts working rapidly, parsing together a number of different facts all at once.
The Iron Throne - he knows from his own historical reading - is a name that goes back more than a century. Originally it belonged to a so-called merchant organization which orchestrated the iron crisis in Nashkel, a plan which was co-opted by the Bhaalspawn Sarevok in his attempted takeover of Baldur's Gate. How long has there been a prison named for it? Is it an official one, or a new one constructed under Gortash's leadership? Was the name a dark joke on Gortash's part? Or perhaps on Orin's?
And the Gondians...
He feels a flash of brutal vindication. He was right, and Wulbren was wrong. The Gondians are being coerced - their compatriots, or perhaps loved ones, being held imprisoned to secure their loyalty. To destroy the foundry wholesale would have been to kill trapped innocents.
And though he came here with the vague thought of assisting the Umberlants in their revenge, that thought has been replaced by another, far more important plan. Those prisoners need to be set free.
Not just because it is the right thing to do (though it is), but by doing so, they would destroy Gortash's leverage over the Gondians, and destroy the Foundry's support system. Having done that - it follows, theoretically at least - the Steel Watch will crumble, or at least be significantly weakened.
Hector feels a pulse of excitement starting to thud under his jaw - though his control holds, and none of it shows in his face. "You're going to take me to the Iron Throne," he says coolly. ""m getting the prisoners out."
The dwarf examines his impassive expression for a moment in silence, then shrugs. "I'll take you in," he agrees. Whether he is afraid of Hector's threat or simply doesn't give a shit is unclear; Hector supposes he'd take either. "But look-- there's some bad shit going down in there. You don't want to get involved. Neither did I, but it was them or me."
Hector opens his mouth to ask for clarification, but Redhammer turns away, shrugging him off. "I'll get Cap warmed up. Get in when you're ready."
-----
They all eye the little submersible rather warily as it starts to hum with power in the water.
"We are to go beneath the waves?" Minsc asks, some of his usual jovial humor missing from the question. "It is not that Minsc is afraid, you understand, but Boo does so very much dislike being wet..."
Hector smiles slightly. "I can't say I blame him, Minsc. On the bright side... this man is clearly as self-interested as they come, and therefore would likely not trust his own hide to that machine if it were not safe."
"The only true constant in the world," Jaheira murmurs dryly.
"Cheer up, Minsc," Karlach says with a grin from Hector's other side. She has been visibly excited to get a chance to talk to their new ranger companion whenever the opportunity presents, and this is no different; he can see the way her eyes are glowing with energy. "You heard what the dwarf said. It's an evil prison, and that means evil guards. You know what that means!"
Minsc brightens up at once and Boo, on his shoulder, gives a loud squeak. "You are right, my fiery friend! That is ever so many evil butts we may kick with both boots!"

Optic Sink — Glass Blocks (Feel It)
Tumblr media
Natalie Hoffman’s NOTS were a combustible riot of rapid fire drums, clanging guitars, belligerent bass, hyped up on sweat and speed.Optic Sink, her band with Magic Kids’ Ben Bauermeister and Sheiks Keith Cooper runs chillier and more dystopian. It operates on a foundation of manic synthesizers and drum machines, with bass thrown in for threat and muscle. This second outing from the Memphis trio is, perhaps, even more alienated and spare.Caulfield Schnug of Sweeping Promises ran the decks, finding an eerie seam between Suicide’s synthy menace, Devo’s robotics and early female-dominated post-punk, the Raincoats and LiliPUT especially.
That last band is a gimme, music-reference-wise, since Glass Block’s only cover is of the LiliPUT song “A Silver Key Can Open An Iron Lock, Somewhere.”The original is bracingly spare, a jangle of guitars unspooling in the background, maybe another room, a drum beat kicking up nearer, a tambourine rattling listlessly, the singer murmuring poetry and yelping aspirated “ah” sounds in German-accented English. It’s almost acoustic folky, but with a post-modern edge, a tang of industrial chemicals in its pastoral simplicity.Optic Sink’s version is sharper and mechanical, a hard electronic pulse puncturing the offbeats (that’s Bauermeister on drum programming) while warm currents of bass run underneath (Cooper on bass). In the instrumental break, big viscous blobs of synthesizer burst through the icy pulse, keyboard dissonances spike out of the mix.The original’s fey innocence remains, but framed in more visceral, violent terms.
And, indeed, that may be the key to the Optic Sink oeuvre, that sonics are cold but also explosive. The title cut makes a funk strut out of drum machine syncopations and walking bass at play.Blurting synth riffs give it an elastic sense of play; it’s full of austere discipline, but also has a bounce in it.If it sounds like a contradiction, it is.
“Modelesque,” which opens the album, stretches out its attenuated groove. It begins in formless drone, a shape-shifting mass of tone that moves like the inside of a lava lamp. But a hard, block-simple drum cadence snaps thing to attention and the thwap of bass commands it to move. The title’s got me thinking about models; skeletally thin and careful about indulgence, but also deeply sensual.Optic Sink is a little like that.

Short film review: “DESTRUCTION” (Andelman, 2016)
DESTRUCTION is a breathtaking and wildly under-appreciated short film/documentary focusing on the impact of technology on the music industry.
Its impressive 8 minute runtime follows the journey of an ordinary MP3 player‘s rise from rock bottom to rockstar (and back again). This film raises strikingly profound moral and ethical questions regarding the rights and autonomy of machines in the modern age, with an unexpected plot twist that will leave you wondering: are humans and computers so different after all?
The soundtrack is also excellent for such a small budget film. I particularly like the thematic shift in the second half of the film, it was subtle but nuanced.
Overall, I’d rate it a 9.5/10. It had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. The story was exhilarating and the acting was phenomenal. I almost wish Joywave were a real band— I would definitely be a fan. Half a point off because the credits were too fast for me to read. A minor detail, but it really took me out of the immersion.

What is the difference between LoRa and LoRaWAN?
Introduction:
LoRaWAN serves as the communication protocol connecting the LoRa signal (which carries sensor data) to the respective application(s). To simplify, think of LoRa as the radio signal transporting the data, while LoRaWAN acts as the governing framework that dictates how this data travels and communicates within the network.
Tumblr media
What is LoRa?
LoRa, short for Long Range, is a wireless technology known for its extended range and energy-efficient characteristics. It operates within unlicensed wireless frequencies, similar to how Wi-Fi utilizes the unregulated 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. The specific frequency employed by LoRa varies depending on the geographic location of the deployment. For instance, in North America, LoRa operates in the 915 MHz band, while in Europe, it utilizes the 868 MHz band and in India it is 865 MHz to 867 MHz.
It is crucial to be aware of the legally permitted frequencies for LoRa deployments in each respective location. In terms of its communication range, LoRa can transmit data up to a distance of 10 kilometers in ideal conditions with a clear line of sight.
Low Power Wide Area (LPWA) technology can be categorized into two main types. On one hand, there's cellular LPWA, which utilizes mobile networks. Examples of cellular LPWA technologies include Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) and Long Term Machine Type Communications (LTE-M). On the other hand, there's non-cellular LPWA like LoRa, which disseminates data by dividing it into encoded packets and transmitting them across various frequency channels and data rates.
What is LoRaWAN?
LoRaWAN is a network protocol that serves as the bridge between the LoRa signal, which carries sensor data, and the applications that use this data. In simpler terms, LoRa represents the radio signal responsible for transmitting the data, while LoRaWAN is the communication protocol that manages and defines how this data is transmitted across the network.
LoRaWAN offers several valuable advantages, including low power consumption, extensive coverage range, and cost-effective connectivity for devices that don't require high data transfer speeds. It's an excellent choice when cellular connectivity is too expensive or Wi-Fi coverage is unavailable. Some of the most compelling use cases for LoRaWAN include:
Agriculture: LoRaWAN's long-range capabilities provide reliable connectivity for rural applications where high data transfer rates are not necessary, making it ideal for agricultural applications. LoRaWAN sensors for agriculture are used for cattle management, soli monitoring, and temperature monitoring.
Asset Tracking and Logistics: LoRaWAN supports cost-effective location tracking of assets, with optimized battery life, making it a practical choice for asset management and logistics.
Smart Metering: LoRaWAN's sensors have the ability to reach even in underground utility locations makes it a suitable choice for smart metering applications.
Smart Homes: LoRaWAN can penetrate obstacles like walls and supports battery-powered devices with low data consumption, making it an attractive connectivity option for smart home applications.LoRaWAN sensors for smart homes are used for Air quality monitoring, water quality monitoring, and temperature & humidity monitoring.
Healthcare: The low power consumption, affordability, and reliability of LoRa technology make it suitable for connected health applications. IoT solutions based on LoRa hardware can monitor high-risk patients or systems around the clock, ensuring comprehensive health and medical safety management.LoRaWAN Gateways and sensors enhance production practices, enable efficient tracking and monitoring of shipments, and facilitate the development of cutting-edge medications.
Industrial Applications: LoRa-enabled devices and sensors play a crucial role in the transformation of industrial IoT operations like mentioned above. They digitize legacy processes and equipment, leading to increased profits, lower costs, and enhanced efficiency. These devices provide real-time data for predictive maintenance, machine health monitoring, reduced downtime, and more.

RUFF MAJIK’s ‘Elektrik Ram’ Full Review + Interview
~By Billy Goate~
Tumblr media
Artwork by Anni Bouchner
'Elektrik Ram' (2023), the latest spin by RUFF MAJIK, is a quintessential rock 'n' roll album. The motley collection of tracks has an Adams Family feel, grabbing your attention straight away with the snaggle-toothed "Hillbilly Fight Song." A rude, jangly welcome to the world of rehab and mental health, when COVID-19 stalked the world, keeping us fearfully isolated in our desolate rooms, going out of our everloving minds.
On his path to freedom from the clutches of chemical addiction, Johni Holiday encountered a host of strange, alluring, and belligerent characters. The songs act as "sketches of the many faces he saw inside the white walls of the hospital." No surprise, then, that the first one is brash and in your face. "Shut your mouth, you'll catch a fly," a most disagreeable fellow warns, insisting that you "sit down before you bleed." His vocals, cast in the tradition of Axl Rose (Guns N' Roses) and Dan McCafferty (Nazareth), snivel and snarl with the portrait of a man you better not cross.
youtube
"She's Still A Goth" is an effective, up-tempo ride through the night. In my recent interview with Johni Holiday (which follows below), I asked him if this was a person he met in his recovery. He said it was emblematic of his wife, who has been a continual support and encouragement during the long, slow road to wellness.
"Mourning Wood" slows the pace for a doleful, introspective mood. Things pick right back up, though, with the footloose "Rave to the Grave,". The Monster Mash vibe really pops alive, thanks to spooky touches from an '80s-style synth. I was ready for a beach party after this one. Ooo-weeee-ooo-ooooo.
youtube
The great thing about Ruff Majik is just how they joyfully borrow from different rock and metal traditions, stick 'em in a blender, and make due with the pieces, like a Salvador Dalí canvas. "Delirium Tremors" is such an example, a wide-ranging cartoonish soundscape that teeters on the edge of sanity (as we'd expect from someone going through actual DTs).
"Cement Brain" brings us back into the warm, swampy southern-stoner territory that Ruff Majik is known for, here utilizing a trip-hop beat that is so welcoming to the ears. The keyboard accents work quite well, but it's those gorgeous twin guitar harmonies that really get to me, especially following this impassioned plea: Please don't let me go back again. Don't let me fall off the fucking wagon.
youtube
Title track "Elektrik Ram" has one of those take the money and run kind of rhythms, not unlike "Dread Breath" from 'Tårn' (2019) -- one of my top Ruff Majik tracks. While the band provides an underlying sense of agitation, the lyrics are drenched in despair and regret:
I used to be a blue eyed boy I used to be so full of joy Now I'm a cog in the machine A random access memory Just a counterfeit of me And I've got nothing to give
A number of the tracks are prefaced by the sardonic wit of horror actor Vincent Price. This works especially well in the case of "Queen of the Gorgons," which plays out like an ultimate tribute to those classic monster movies. It's a great song, too -- one of the standouts of the album, joining "She's Still A Goth" (both inspired by Johni's wife and Ruff Majik album artist Anni Bouchner). Let's pause to respect that two of the record's most successful tracks were inspired by love.
youtube
"A Song About Drugs (with a Clever Title)" is a weird, quirky, lopsided march that one might expect to hear in some dimly lit cantina in a galaxy far, far away. The shortest of the 11 tracks, I'd love to hear Ruff Majik do more in this vein. Meanwhile, "Shangrilah Inc" is a soulful, slow blues number where Johni's grimacing vocals really show us what they can do. Lyrically, the song may be a dig at the commercial industry that's grown up around Mental Health.
The last track, "Chemically Humanized" is the longest and most remarkable track on the record, thoughtfully choreographed from beginning to end. There are some interesting literary references in the lyrics, as well. I tried to steal the Devil's note -- a reference to the dreaded tritone, once feared to drive people mad. I even borrowed David's chord, by contrast, draws upon the story of David in the Bible, whose harp playing was legendary for driving away King Saul's evil spirits. Our protagonist laments that none of these things -- not even a seance and crystal ball -- could relieve his tormented state. "I wish I was dead," he confesses, "I'm a ghost after all."
youtube
Quirky and enigmatic, Elektrik Ram showcases Ruff Majik at an exciting stage of creativity. Because of its thematic nature, the album begs to be considered not on the first track or even the singles, but as a collection united by an overarching theme.
Ruff Majik's new album is out now in digital and vinyl formats via Mongrel Records (get it here). Stick it on a playlist with Queens of the Stone Age, The Heavy Eyes, and The Tazers.
Give ear...

2022 in Music - My Top 5 Favourite Albums
Tumblr media
5.  MUSE – Will of the People
The maddest trio to have ever come out of Devon have returned, completing their magnificent comeback as they again prove they’ve been one of the best things happening in prog rock for a while now.  They’re still clinging to the more electronic sound that’s come to pervade their music for the past decade or so, but this still feels like a glorious throwback as Matt Bellamy and co have brought back the old school HEAVY in a big way here …
Standout tracks: Will of the People, Compliance, Won’t Stand Down, Ghosts (How Can I Move On), You Make Me Feel like It’s Halloween, Kill Or Be Killed, Verona, We Are Fucking Fucked
Tumblr media
4.  ARCHITECTS – The Classic Symptoms of a Broken Spirit
They’ve done it again. For the second year in a row, the Brighton metalcore heavy-hitters have delivered a blistering, pitch-perfect album full of riotous bangers, this time peeking in what I could happily argue is THE BEST TRACK they’ve ever put together.  As with their previous offering, For Those Who Wish To Exist, this record probably won’t please their old school fans, but I love this stuff JUST FINE.
Standout tracks: Deep Fake, Tear Gas, Burn Down My House, Living Is Killing Us, Doomscrolling, A New Moral Low Ground, All the Love In the World, Be Very Afraid
Tumblr media
3.  FLORENCE + THE MACHINE – Dance Fever
Florence Welch and her astounding band have delivered another masterful opus of epic soundscapes and richly orchestrated opulence, effortlessly showcasing the singer-songwriter’s once-in-a-generation voice and big calibre lyrical and compositional flair, proving once and for all she’s the undeniable QUEEN of the indie rock scene …
Standout tracks: King, Free*, Girls Against God, Dream Girl Evil, Cassandra, Heaven Is Here, My Love, The Bomb, Morning Elvis
*Honestly, I CANNOT choose between this one and King for best track on the album …
Tumblr media
2.  EDITORS – EBM
The most criminally overlooked and underrated indie band of all time returns with what I think might be their very best album EVER, packed with pretty much perfect electro-rock belters. They’ve always worn their Joy Division/New Order influences on their sleeves, but this one puts the Mancunian pioneers on notice that these boys from Birmingham are now officially coming for their crowns.
Standout tracks: Heart Attack, Picturesque, Karma Climb, Kiss, Silence, Educate, Strange Intimacy
Tumblr media
1.  RAMMSTEIN – Zeit
The German masters of industrial metal have been plying their trade since the mid-90s, and every release has been well worth a spin, but they’ve come a long way in that time, and their previous eponymously titled album was a proper banger, dominated by the best track they’ve EVER recorded, the immortal Deutschland.  It seemed like a tall order for them to top that masterpiece … but they’ve pulled off the impossible, crafting a flawless opus that perfectly encapsulates their discordant-yet-ingenious singular brilliance and, OF COURSE, the incomparable voice of Till Lindemann.  Despite appearances they insist they’ve still got plenty more music to make, but this is the PERFECT encapsulation of Rammstein at their very best.
Standout tracks: Armee der Tristen, Zeit, Zick Zack, Angst, Dicke Titten, Lügen, Adieu
The ones that didn’t quite make the cut:
BILLY HOWERDEL – What Normal Was (the other creative half of A Perfect Circle proves he can do dark, edgy and beautiful electronic rock without needing Maynard); THE GREAT DISCORD – Deam Morte (the gothic-edged Swedish metalheads bring us another winner, with magnificent frontwoman Fia Kempe on fire throughout); AURORA – The Gods We Can Touch (the immensely talented young Norwegian singer-songwriter’s third indie-pop album is another winner); GHOST – Impera (Sweden’s most unique metal band continues to dominate as Tobias Forge delivers more retro-styled brilliance); PANIC! AT THE DISCO – Viva Las Vengeance (Brendon Urie pays fitting tribute to his biggest influences – especially Queen - with this lovingly irreverent record)
Honourable mention:
Tumblr media
SPIRITBOX – Rotoscope
The best new metalcore band of the block continue to show they really are the ones to watch with this BLINDING three-track EP which shows that the astonishingly talented Courtney LaPlante and co are DETERMINED to keep experimenting with their sound. Opener/title-track Rotoscope is the undeniable highlight here, but Sew Me Up and, in particular, Hysteria both prove to be thoroughly irresistible earworms too …

What is Intel vPro?
Intel vPro enhances business PC performance as a platform, not technologies. Intel has added capabilities to vPro since 2006 to meet IT managers’ main concerns: performance, manageability, and security. Intel vPro offers firmware, software, and hardware for business computing. Intel Hardware Shield, AMT, TDT, TXT, and VT increase security, remote management, stability and system performance.
Safety
In the age of complex cyberthreats, businesses value security. Intel vPro safeguards business data on hardware, software, and networks with comprehensive security.
Intel Hardware Shield: Which protects the BIOS and firmware against firmware-level attacks, is one of Intel vPro’s most critical security features. It need this security to avoid data breaches and unauthorized access to vital system components.
Intel Threat Detection Technology (TDT): Hardware-based Intel Threat Detection Technology (TDT) on Intel’s vPro platform detects ransomware and malware. TDT detects suspicious behavior in real time utilizing machine learning and CPU telemetry with reduced system performance impact.
Intel TXT (Intel Trusted Execution Technology): Intel TXT protects against advanced persistent attacks (APTs), blocks unauthorized access, and checks system integrity during startup for a secure boot.
Intel vPro’s multilayered security features help enterprises protect private data, comply with laws, and prevent security breaches.
Controllability
The modern company environment is more global and networked than ever before, making efficient IT infrastructure management essential. By enabling IT professionals to remotely monitor, manage, and troubleshoot devices, Intel vPro’s manageability capabilities help to lower the complexity and expense of operating a dispersed IT system.
Intel Active Management Technology (AMT): One of the main components of vPro’s management features is Intel Active Management Technology (AMT). Even in situations when the device’s power is off or the operating system is not responding, IT managers may use it to remotely access and operate devices. In a remote work environment, this out-of-band administration feature is very helpful for remote diagnostics, update applications, and problem-solving without needing on-site assistance.
Remote Keyboard, Video, and Mouse (KVM) Control: KVM remote control is included into Intel vPro, allowing IT managers to completely operate a device’s interface just as they would if they were physically there. This function is essential for offering workers remote help, guaranteeing that technological problems are fixed promptly and effectively, wherever they may be.
Remote Configuration and Monitoring: IT teams can make sure that devices have the most recent settings, security updates, and software patches installed by remotely configuring and monitoring them using Intel vPro. This lowers the possibility of vulnerabilities and ensures that the devices keep performing as efficiently as possible.
Businesses can have tight control over their IT infrastructure thanks to Intel vPro’s manageability capabilities, which also lower downtime and boost overall IT operations efficiency.
Consistency
Businesses that rely on dependable and constant performance from their IT infrastructure have serious concerns about stability. A crucial component of the vPro platform is Intel’s Stable IT Platform Program (SIPP), which gives companies the guarantee that their systems will continue to function steadily and interoperable over time.
Intel SIPP: Intel SIPP allows companies to deploy and manage their PC fleets without having to often requalify hardware by guaranteeing platform stability for a minimum of 15 months. Businesses are free to concentrate on expansion and innovation rather than ongoing hardware administration thanks to this long-term stability, which lowers the complexity and expense of IT infrastructure upkeep.
Decreased interruptions: Intel SIPP reduces business operations interruptions by guaranteeing consistent components within the Intel vPro platform throughout time. IT teams can roll out new systems with confidence, knowing that they will work with the infrastructure already in place and that major requalification work won’t be needed for upgrades down the road.
Corporate Platform Validation: Through a comprehensive process called Corporate Platform Validation (PV), Intel ensures that platforms, such as those based on the Intel vPro platform, adhere to the necessary compatibility and reliability criteria. Through this procedure, the hardware and software configurations are ensured to function as intended in terms of performance, security, and manageability.
Commercial Bill of Materials Known Configuration: Intel’s carefully examined and approved configuration of components for use in commercial applications is known as the Commercial Bill of Materials Known Configuration (BKC). Businesses may use this well-established configuration as a dependable and stable reference model for implementing Intel vPro systems.
Upgrades and Recovery Proceed Without a Hitch: Intel vPro’s emphasis on stability guarantees that companies may update and implement new technologies without jeopardizing their current infrastructure. Even in cases when an operating system fails, IT managers have the ability to remotely apply firmware upgrades to networked devices. Intel vPro makes sure that the system may be diagnosed and restored remotely in the event that an update fails or the firmware gets corrupted, minimizing downtime and maintaining business continuity.
In essence, Corporate PV verifies that Intel vPro systems adhere to stringent reliability and compatibility requirements. Businesses may use the verified and trustworthy reference configuration provided by the Commercial BKC. Additionally, companies may get long-term stability in their IT infrastructure using Intel SIPP. All of these steps contribute to lowering the possibility of interruptions and guaranteeing the long-term dependability and compatibility of their systems.
Execution
Retaining a competitive advantage in the highly competitive business world of today requires exceptional performance. With Intel vPro technology, the MSI PRO DP21 14MQ and Cubi NUC 13MQ series delivers outstanding performance to meet the needs of contemporary business applications.
Intel Turbo Boost Technology: The Intel vPro platform uses Intel Turbo Boost Technology to ensure commercial application performance. This function dynamically increases the processor’s clock speed based on workload to deliver additional power without losing energy efficiency. For jobs needing quick bursts of computing power, such data analysis, content development, and intricate simulations, it is very helpful.
DDR5 Memory Support: Compared to DDR4, DDR5 memory offers far quicker data transfer rates and more energy efficiency. The MSI PRO DP21 14MQ and Cubi NUC 13MQ series both support this newer memory technology. This makes these machines the best option for high-speed data processing jobs, such as multitasking, video editing, and large-scale data analysis.
Connectivity and Expansion: With several USB 10Gbps connections, the MSI PRO DP21 14MQ and Cubi NUC series offers quicker data transfer rates than earlier versions. For companies in the media and entertainment sectors who need fast access to data, this is very helpful. A broad number of peripherals and devices are compatible with the Cubi NUC 13MQ series thanks to its many USB ports, Thunderbolt, and HDMI connection options.
Energy Efficiency: Excellent performance and energy efficiency are combined in these devices. Because of their ENERGY STAR accreditation, they meet high energy efficiency standards. This lessens the environmental impact of companies and helps them save money on electricity.

This week in listening, 02/09/24
I honestly just listened to a fuck ton of Silverstein and Thrice this past week, so in an effort to not repeat the same bands on these posts, I'm only including 6 releases instead of 10.
Chelsea Wolfe's new album dropped today (friday) and by goly it's my favourite thing she's done since Unknown Rooms in 2012. To be fair, I haven't given many of her other albums a fair shot (heavy doom-folk wasn't really my cup of tea), but after listening to this I think I owe it to myself to do a full run through her discography. The gothic industrial instrumentals are both subdued and engaging, and when combined with Chelsea's gorgeous voice it comes together to sound somewhat like a soundtrack to unearthing the catacombs of a lost civilization in a decayed concrete jungle.
Like Moths To Flames has been one of my favourite metalcore bands since I re-discovered them a few years ago. They've been a super solid band ever since their first EP in 2010 and have only grown stronger over the years. It's actually quite rare for a metalcore band from the 2010's to still be on top of their game and improving after 6 LP's. One of my favourite things about this band, and why I believe they've managed to be so consistent over the years, is that they aren't afraid to wane and wax in their evolution without losing sight of their DNA. Over their career they have released albums that have gone back and forth from heavy hardcore to a more hook centric Breaking Benjamin-esque alt metal sound, but it's always been good and it's always sounded like the same band. Now with these new singles (and the two standalone singles they dropped in 2023) they are stripping way back on the catchy choruses to pour their focus into just creating memorable and heavy as fuck riffs. This is some of their most crushing and technical material to date and I can not wait for the full length to drop later this year.
Wolves & Machines are a super underrated alternative rock/post hardcore band in the vein of Brand New and Thrice. I first listened to this band back in 2010 when they released their debut record Ailments. I really loved that record and have super fond memories listening to it, but those memories were only triggered recently when I stumbled upon them again while falling down a rabbit hole of "fans also like" sections on spotify. I completely forgot they existed until I saw their name and then all those memories came flooding back to me. I swiftly hit play on Ailments and let the nostalgia bathe me in it's afterglow. The absolute best part of rediscovering this band though was finding out that they never stopped putting out really solid albums. I have since fallen absolutely head over heels with their 2014 record Since Before Our Time. For fucks sake, just hit play and you'll see why.
Ghost Atlas is the side project of progressive metalcore outfit ERRA's guitarist and clean vocalist Jesse Cash. Ghost Atlas' 2017 album All Is In Sync... was very much rooted in post hardcore ala HRVRD, Saosin and Circa Survive. With this new album he has diverted course a bit into much softer pop rock territory. He didn't completely ditch the post hardcore edge, but the whole album is just a lot more mellow and blissed out than his previous work. Some fans have felt very divided by this shift in sound, but I love it. This record is just pure comfort. I think the album art does a perfect job at capturing the vibe: a morning cup o' joe on your balcony with a cat on your lap, and Jesse's beautiful voice serenading you into a deep state on contentedness. This is likely going to end up on my year end list.
I've been a "big fan" of Burial ever since his groundbreaking 2007 LP Untrue. I put "big fan" in parenthesis because despite absolutely loving some of his earlier music to death, I am not die hard enough to be keeping up with every two song single or weird ambient EP he has released over the years. Someone wrote online that this new single was his "best work since Rival Dealer", and that was enough to make me don my Burial fan cap again and dive in. Boy was I not disappointed. These two tracks are expansive at approx. 13 minutes each, but they do not feel tiring or strung out at all. They represent everything I love about Burial; that sweet sweet crackling atmosphere, nimble footed drum patterns and haunting vocal samples that are effective in their sparsity, injecting just the perfect amount of melody into the hazy rhythms. Dreamfear slowly disintegrates and becomes more aggressive over it's run time until the sample repeating "BACK FROM THE DEAD, FUCKED UP IN THE HEAD" hits us in the head over and over, inducing psychosis panic in the listener. It's glorious.
I've been getting back into more progressive rock and metal recently. I blame TesseracT and Aviations for that, as they both put out absolute home run records last year that reawakened the bound and gagged Dream Theater fan inside me. I checked this album on a whim after reading a review about it that described it as "bright and uplifting" metal, and I was immediately captivated by it. If there's one thing I absolutely adore in music, it's a contradiction. Taking two things that people usually do not associate with each other (uplifting and metal) and engaging them in holy matrimony. Artificial Language have a more classical sound than Aviations, but the bright chords, djenty riffs and piano leads are all still in stock. I'd say it's the perfect counterpart to 2023's Luminaria and I'm keen to give it more listens over the coming weeks.

Terrine — Standing Abs (Bruit Direct Disques)
Tumblr media
Terrine - Standing Abs by Terrine
Terrine is the experimental project of sound artist Claire Gapenne, who lives in France and got her start in an industrial band but currently distills organic and electronic sounds into mobile but meditative lattices of tone. Over the past decade, Terrine has churned out a steady stream of these musical abstractions at a rate of one or two per year. _Standing Abs _is the latest, austere, cerebral and full of unreadable purpose.
The first two tracks make statements, if not in the music, at least in their sentence-formed titles. The first “Baton xxl will make a record one day” introduces a clear, colorless pulse of electronic sound that moves ahead relentlessly, inexorably, like a power walker striding forward with no time for looking from side to side. The pulse progresses steadily, even as bits of dissonance and static mass around it, even as the twinkle of something like clamped cymbals or keys jangling distantly intercede. At one point, you hear abbreviated thumps of drum or cymbal, the wallop clipped off abruptly, so that the sharp edge becomes as much the sound as the percussive thud, but that too falls by the wayside as the electronic cadence moves resolutely on.
The next track, “Blason will win an award this year” floats a pool of woozier, more interdeterminant sound, the pierces it with the clatter like woodblocks. A dub-steppy, Shackleton-esque long moaning tone, melodica-esque but not, rises out of pixelated beats, but there’s no sense, as in Shackleton’s music, that the structure lies in ruins. These rhythmic architectures are precise and pristine and untouched.
Gapenne adds piano here and there, in patterns that split the difference between jazz and post-modern classical music. In “Nuage de nuls,” simple phrases linger hauntingly, like Satie, but subsumed in industrial buzz and clatter. The disc closes with “She’s so kind de ouf,” the only cut with a human voice on it, a man saying something in French, before the rattle of rapid fire drum machine takes over the foreground. Gapenne layers a metronomic beat over this rattle, punctures the surface with deep-toned electronic boings and bongs. It’s just a glimpse of humanity, and then the machines, triumphant, take it over.
And yet, Terrine is a very human endeavor, forming odd blurts and crashes, bleeps and doodles into intricate, ever-shifting patterns. We see pictures in the data, because that’s what we do as homo sapiens, but also because Terrine has put them there.
