Bake Date
Fresh from the human world, you can't help but feel out of place as the new lady of the manor. Far too used to having to take care of yourself and Iruma by doing everything from cooking and cleaning to working long hours in the hopes of giving him a better life, you felt rather disgruntled at having absolutely nothing to do. After all, your adoption into the Sullivan family meant getting a do-it-all family butler who refused to allow you to do anything even remotely based in those categories. However, in all these years you had actually grown rather fond of baking.
And come hell or high water, you were going to enjoy the kitchen space again.
You understood it, really.
Opera had been hired as a security devil, and part of that job description included taking care of all the household duties, so their masters could focus. It was considered quite the insult, Sullivan had explained, to even so much as imply that they weren't up to standards. Which probably explained why everything in the manner was suddenly sparkling, and a feast prepared the next time you had left your room, a mere ten minutes after the first time you made your request.
Plus, after all those years of taking care of both yourself and then Iruma, it was a rather nice break to leave everything to someone else's care. Even if it did leave you feeling a little...ennui. Especially since you had grown rather fond of one particular "chore" that often left you feeling very relaxed at the end.
Baking.
The systematic method of putting ingredients together, the scent of freshly baked goods wafting through your small home, the joy of seeing others smile as they indulged in your treats. It was cathartic and addicting. And with being stolen from your home and subsequently dropped into what was essentially demon royalty, you had been denied, multiple times, your favoured drug.
This, obviously, would not do.
Not if they expected you to stay sane, at least.
Your opponent may be an undefeated demon who always seemed to just know things, but you wouldn't back down so easily. As a human, you have many biological ups at your disposal, the best ones for this circumstance being adaptability and patience.  You simply had to wait for Opera to let their guard down and leave the kitchen unguarded.
Normally, such a task would be impossible. For a race considered vastly incautious, Opera didn't seem to know how to not be on guard, and with your asking for the usage of the kitchen, a number of times, has taken to keeping a particular eye on it. You couldn't seem to get within ten feet without them appearing and asking if you needed something.
But that was fine because your patience won in the end. Mostly.
With the summer holiday ending and after the whole Walter Park fiasco, Sullivan had decided to take Iruma shopping in town. This meant Opera would be tagging along for various reasons. It had been quite easy to beg off going as well. Claiming that you wanted away from crowded areas until school began again (you still hadn't forgiven Sullivan for the whole news debacle) and that you would just spend the time relaxing.
Which was entirely true. You would just be relaxing in the kitchen rather than the library, as you implied. At first, you weren't certain you would be dragged along, what with Opera staring deep into your soul through your eyes. You were sure you had been caught before you had even begun.
Instead, they simply blinked and inclined their head to you, stating they would leave a tray of tea and snacks in the library for you to partake in while you read, before turning on their heels. You watched Opera's retreating figure with a sense of triumph, your heart pounding with excitement. They had taken the bait, hook, line, and sinker. With a quiet and knowing smile, you watched carefully from your spot by the window until a carriage was driven by the familiar sight of the red-haired butler through the gates. You waited patiently for them to disappear from sight over the horizon before making your move.
Stepping into the spacious kitchen, you couldn't help but feel a rush of nostalgia. The polished marble countertops, the gleaming stainless steel appliances, and the array of utensils neatly arranged on the walls all whispered an invitation. It was as if the kitchen itself had missed you, even though you had never stepped foot into this particular one before.
Your gaze landed on the pristine oven, and your fingers itched to create something delightful. You weren't about to let this golden opportunity go to waste. After all, you had a plan, and it involved baking.
Your first task was to gather the necessary ingredients. Fortunately, you had become well-acquainted with the cookbooks in Sullivan Manor's library during your stay. With a practised eye, you selected flour, sugar, eggs, and a few other essentials. You were a master at improvising, and you didn't need a recipe to create something delicious. Even if you should probably have started with one due to the differences between food in the two worlds.
As you began to mix the ingredients in a large bowl, you felt a sense of peace settle over you. Baking was your refuge, your solace. It was a way to express your love and care for others, even in a world as chaotic as the Netherworld. The scent of the ingredients blending together filled the kitchen, and you couldn't help but smile. It was a comforting aroma that made you feel at home, no matter where you were. You continued to work, your hands moving with practised precision as you shaped the dough and prepared it for baking.
Just as you were about to put your creation in the oven, you heard a noise from the doorway. Startled, you turned to see Opera standing there, an accusatory expression on their face, despite it not changing at all.
"Ah, I should have expected to find you here," they said, voice calm and collected as ever.
You smiled sheepishly. "I just wanted to bake something. It's something I've always enjoyed, you know, and you guard this kitchen so well, which I understand really! It's your domain as a security devil, but baking has always been my safe place. My thing to help me relax and not go crazy. It's why I kept trying to sneak in here."
Opera regarded you with an unreadable look, slowly blinking large eyes at you as you rambled on. "Baking?"
You nodded, your determination unwavering. "Yes, baking! I love the methodical process of mixing things together and the smells of pastries cooking. I promise I won't make a mess. You can stay and watch if you'd like. Maybe I can even convince you to try a slice of my pie when it's done."
Opera hesitated for a moment, their head tilting sideways slightly, ears twitching a little in what you presumed was interest. "Well, since you've gone through all this trouble, I suppose I can spare a few minutes to watch. But I'll be keeping a close eye on you."
You grinned, feeling a sense of victory. "Deal."
As you worked together to prepare the cake, you found that Opera was, unsurprisingly, rather helpful. Always offering suggestions on what ingredients go best together and even lending a hand when needed — the biting cherries bag was surprisingly heavy. The tension between you slowly melted away, and before you knew it, you were chatting and laughing as if you had known each other for much longer.
As the pie baked in the oven, you both sat down at the kitchen table, sharing stories and getting to know each other better. It was a pleasant surprise, and you couldn't help but be grateful for the unexpected turn of events. When the timer finally let out a sound that rather resembled a dying scream to you, the pie was finally ready. Carefully, you gripped a towel, pulled out the circular glass dish and gently placed it on a cooling rack Opera had set up for you. You sliced a generous portion for Opera, placing it on a plate and handing it to them with a smile. "Here, give it a try. I promise it's not poisonous." Though you couldn't say the same for anything Iruma might attempt in the future.
Opera took a bite and their eyes widened in surprise. "This is... incredible. You really are quite the baker."
You beamed with pride, feeling a warmth in your chest, cutting a similar-sized piece for yourself. "I'm glad you like it."
As you both enjoyed the pie together, it became clear that this impromptu baking session had turned into something more. It was a moment of connection and understanding, and you couldn't help but think that maybe, just maybe, there could be more to your relationship with Opera than you had initially thought. As the afternoon sun streamed into the kitchen, and Opera left to pick up Sullivan and Iruma from town, you realized that sometimes, the best moments in life were the ones you never expected.
In hindsight, you also realized you could have just told Opera why you wanted in here so badly, rather than resorting to practically breaking and entering.
Alls well that ends well, though.

May I ask for iruma x demon! father! reader (PLATONIC OFC!) -
Like before Sullivan adopted iruma he adopted reader first because he wanted a son to dote on, and when reader became an adult he couldn't wait for grandchildren and *boom* iruma. Reader is a bit irritated with Sullivan but caring towards iruma because he knows why iruma can't say no, could be from his family magic that he knows this. And maybe even iruma calling him dad on accident? (Reader doesn't force him to call him dad)
I literally love this ask
Imma say some stuff about before iruma
Sullivan was probably as or more doting and that could be either good or bad
And when you became an adult? My Lord this guy was sobbing for days.
when he out of nowhere decided to just give you a kid it was so awkward like tf is happening??
Basically everyone was confused and iruma was shaking,so you decied to not blow this out of proportion and just accept it and you grew to care for him ALOT
when you decided he was gonna be your child he was practically shitting in his pants
You knew about irumas family and they way he can’t say no cause of your bloodline magic let’s just say it’s related to memories for now I’ll probably elaborate in another post
A while later you decided to enroll him into Babyls cause it was the school you used to go to plus free tuition cause of Sullivan
When you met his “friends” as he calls them you probably got a damn migraine cause these guys be LOUD but nonetheless you’re happy that there’s people around him that care for him
Iruma was trying to ask you a question one day and accidentally called you dad and your heart melted cause of it and you told him that he could call you dad if he wants, and he didn’t at first by then he started calling yo dad and it’s so cute when he says it😭
Iruma was doing homework in the living room table and was puzzled on his math questions so he called out to you “ hey dad-” And then he realised why he had said but you were literally right next to him heard it and damn near got heartburn from how cute it was,you saw that he got a bit panicky after he said it so you had to calm him down”it’s fine if you call me dad” and then you and helped him finish his homework, and he said “thanks dad!” With the biggest smile on his face
This isn’t my best work tbh😞 slo iput quotations on the friends part cause most demons don't know what friends are

People trying to force Iruma and Kalego into a "psuedo-father/son" dynamic are soooo weird. He is literally his teacher. That's it. Iruma HAS adopted family. It is, in fact, a large part of the story.

"Leave now my dear grandson, for you have grown strong enough to travel this vast world to find what you’ve lost. Although you come from the stars, you will always have a family here in Inazuma and you are not alone." — Lord Sullivan
◆ Name: Iruma
◆ Title: Traveler
◆Lord Sullivan’s adopted grandson, Bachiko’s mentee, etc.
◆ Vision: ?
◆ Constellation: Viator
Tumblr media
Finally finished this au piece I was doing in October! Barbara and Yoimiya were my main refs for his pose as he bears the most similarities to them in this au despite being the traveler. BG is an edit of Hoyo’s Inazuma BG! It’s a unique blue/purple as he has no vision. I also used some of Iruma’s various kimono designs from Nishi and other official works as some more lil refs.
Iruma landed in Inazuma at a very young age not knowing where his family had gone. With a dangerous world, he was raised by a Sullivan, an outlander living there. He was mentored by his fontainian security guard, Opera, and an inazuman named Bachiko who taught him archery. When Iruma reached the age of a young adult, he was old enough to set off in search of his origins and family, and with the vision hunt decree getting worse, it was now or never. He was snuck onto a cargo ship headed to Mondstadt, where his adventure would begin… and thanks to a ring Iruma had fished out of the water, he would also have a travel companion in the odd creature living inside.

I hadn't mentioned it before, but I think the mafia au is pretty cool, as are the changes. For example, it's Iruma who saves Sullivan and then repays his debt by adopting him. Unlike the original manga, where he saves him from his abusive family. Kalego is much more avaricious, and Opera is wilder. But they still have the same traits that make you think they're the same characters from the original manga.

Heart of steel AU:What kind of weapons does midoriya have built into his body besides the basic super strength and self destruct?
Sumo x demon adoption AU: eating competitions are either banned or a family past time.
Heart of steel AU: Lasers, air cannons, jet-thrusts, micro-missiles, tasers. Probably at least one blade.
Sumo x Demon Adoption AU: I've seen how Iruma eats, I can believe this combo

I am so tempted in saying "5 Headcanons where Katydid won the court case" but that would be so AU that it would spawn an entirely new timeline
So better thing
5 Headcanons for an AU where the Hell Lawyer is in Iruma-kun
An AU where Katydid won and I was deemed responsible of the creation of Neurotrauma shall never be allowed to exist. It would be better for all the universes involved to be destroyed.
1 - Sullivan decides that he wants a grandchild but also doesn't want the border control to bother him about the whole kidnapping of a child. So he does the logical thing! He calls an adoption lawyer!
2 - Quite the strange lawyer, by the way. Probably a demon but certainly not one he has ever met. Also, Opera is really scared of them.
3 - Iruma's parents, being two horrible persons who have no common sense, actually tell Iruma that they are giving up any parental rights over him. Then, a social worker (actually the Hell Lawyer in a blond week) tells him that they found a family where to place him. Iruma is like "You know what? It can't be worse than my parents put me through."
4 - He is really surprised when a demon comes and picks him up. In this AU, Sullivan asks Iruma while he is still in the demon world if he can adopts him. Iruma is a little less worried about being eaten by demons as he had the time to get used to the idea before being taken to the demon world.
5 - This has the very fun consequences of, when Baal outs Iruma as a human, having Sullivan shops up an adoption contract and, according to the demon law, if the adoption was made the correct way, the adopted child is considered to have the very same blood of his parent! So legally speaking, Iruma is a demon! Anyone who disagrees will be eaten by the Hell Lawyer!

Best Underrated Anime Group F Round 3: #F8 vs #F2
#F8: Young boy gets sold to a demon to be his grandson
#F2: 90s maid girls with guns
Details and poll under the cut!
Tumblr media
#F8: Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun (Marimashita! Iruma-kun)
youtube
Summary:
Fourteen-year-old Iruma Suzuki has been unfortunate all his life, having to work to earn money for his irresponsible parents despite being underage. One day, he finds out that his parents sold him to the demon Sullivan. However, Iruma's worries about what will become of him are soon relieved, for Sullivan merely wants a grandchild, pampering him and making him attend the demon school Babyls.
At first, Iruma tries to keep a low profile in fear of his peers discovering that he is human. Unfortunately, this ends up being more difficult than he expected. It turns out that Sullivan himself is the chairman of the school, and everyone expects him to become the next Demon King!
Iruma immediately finds himself in an outrageous situation when he has to chant a forbidden spell in front of the entire school. With this, Iruma instantly earns a reputation he does not want. Even so, he is bound to be roped into more bizarre circumstances.
Propaganda 1:
The main character, Iruma, is very kind and wholesome, and you really just want to see him succeed throughout the series, especially after knowing everything he’s been through. He was neglected and used by his parents, but now he gets to live out a nice life despite being surrounded by demons, as his new grandfather spoils him. The demon that adopted him, Sullivan, is an extremely powerful figure in the demon realm, but through most of the series, he looks like an egg. The side characters are also well-designed with interesting personalities. The main two, Asmodeus and Clara, become almost inseparable from Iruma after they become friends, and the three of them are very cute together. There is also a canon nonbinary cat person, who is technically Sullivan’s servant, but he is treated as part of the family, and he’s a disaster bisexual.
Propaganda 2:
It’s really good in terms of art, plot, and characters. There’s nonbinary representation in the form of Opera, and there’s friendship galore with very poly undertones. It’s so sweet and good, and it’s just rahhhhh. Everyone is silly but also realistic and well-developed. There are reasonable arcs, and there’s a well mix of plot-driven growth and character-driven plots. I love every person who appears onscreen, even for like two seconds. The world building is lovely and so bright and colorful.
Propaganda 3:
You should vote for it because it is genuinely one of the best animes I’ve ever seen. It has good character development, mysteries, focuses on the cast well, and it is not a harem anime. The plot is also really good and is suitable for all age groups.
Fun fact: the main character crossdresses three times in the first three seasons
Trigger Warnings: Child Abuse (mild)
Tumblr media
#F2: Akiba Maid War (Akiba Meido Sensou)
youtube
Summary:
The innocent Nagomi Wahira has always admired the cute girls serving at maid cafes. Hoping to fulfill her dream of becoming one, she moves to Akihabara to work at the maid cafe Ton Tokoton.
Nagomi’s first day seems completely normal—until she has to run an “errand” at a rival maid cafe along with her fellow recruit, the mature Ranko Mannen. There, things quickly go south, and Nagomi soon gets her first taste of Akihabara’s violent maid wars. As she watches Ranko calmly battle her way through a horde of gun- and knife-wielding maids, Nagomi realizes that maid cafes are drastically unlike what she had envisioned.
While struggling to reconcile her expectations with the harsh reality she finds herself in, Nagomi searches for the enjoyment she once saw in the lives of maids.
Propaganda:
It was animated by P.A. Works! As far as I know, they also worked on Buddy Daddies, Angel Beats, Ya Boy Kongming, etc. Cygames also contributed to this anime!! The story is creative as well. Who would’ve thought of a cute maid mafia anime? Keep in mind, this is a P. A. Works ORIGINAL. They went SO crazy on this anime. There’s also 12 episodes, which means that you can binge it all on one day and still be satisfied :D The OP and ED are also catchy, creative and unskippable. Despite its dark themes, it can sometimes get a little more “lighthearted” and silly, even in the most violent scenes ;P
Trigger Warnings: Flashing Lights, Graphic Depictions of Cruelty/Violence/Gore.
Just like what I explained, it’s violent. A lot of guns. And a lot of blood. Yes, they kill fellow maids in like every episode ever lol. Also, since Akiba is known to have flashy street signs, like every city ever…. And the guns, of course…that’s why I put the Flashing Lights warning.

For the Sake of a Smile (V.2) Chapter Three
Title: For the Sake of a Smile (Revised)
Overall Rating: Mature (18+)
Chapter Rating: E for Everyone
Trigger warnings: Nothing beyond the child abuse hinted in the series, though we do explore the consequences a bit more.
Main Pairing: Balam Shichiro/Reader
Summary: Hell on earth was your motto for your job. Granted, you were pretty sure earth really was hell, considering the shit you had seen in your life. And the fact your coworker was a child.
A child named Suzuki Iruma, in fact. A kid who’s life was decidedly worse than yours, but yet he smiled despite everything. It wasn’t long after meeting him that you decided you’d do a lot for his smile. Including summoning a literal demon and signing your soul away.
But as it turns out, hell (The Netherworld, actually) was a lot better than living on earth. Demons were more humane than a lot of humans you knew.
And Iruma’s smile wasn’t the only one that would change your life.
Masterlist | Ao3| Mairimashitai! Simps Discord
A month after you began your new job, and you had to admit you were thoroughly enjoying your new life. For possibly the first time in memory, you felt content; no longer working for the future in hopes it would be better, you were happily living in the moment.
Every day you were surrounded by books, able to read to your heart's content. Iruma and his friends would visit throughout the day, which made your heart warm seeing him so happy as well.
You were even warming up to Sullivan and Opera, and starting to see them as family. It was hard to believe that for the first time you could remember, you had a family all of your own, as odd as it was. A son you had more or less adopted, in part because of a contract with a demon. A father figure that seized every opportunity he could to tell you and Iruma how excited he was to have you both in his life, as if to make up for the lack of love in your past.
And then Opera…. Well, they didn't have a defined role, but they were definitely part of the family. And slowly accepting you like the cat they resembled.
The one thing that was giving you a headache was getting the Library organized. Akuma and some others had helped you to get the bookcases and tables back into perfect shape-- including making a few reading nooks inspired by places you seen in the human realm. More relaxed, comfortable spots for students to escape to. Which left the organization of the books themselves.
There were the basic categories like History (except the Netherworld history was a whirlwind in a half itself), literature (which was surprisingly small, with no 'classics' yet established), and biology (which, diving deeper into the subject, was so much stranger than fiction). But then there were the odder topics like Torture, Familiars, Astrology, Psychiatry. Not to mention the seemingly endless categories of different kinds of magic such as Seduction, Elemental, Bloodline, Magical Apparatuses, and so much more.
You rubbed your head as you tried to stave off a headache from trying to create an organization  chart. You looked up from your worksheet, thinking about popping into the kitchens for a cup of hell-gray tea. The staff were still amazed how horrible any of your attempts at creating the most basic drinks turned out, so they were always happy to supply you with a fresh kettle.
You froze as your tired mind noticed  the man demon crouching behind a nearby bookcase (that did little to hide him). Granted, this wasn't the first time you had caught someone staring at you; usually it was a student watching in awed terror, hearing one of the outlandish rumors that had started to circulate after Iruma's evil cycle.
Except there was no way in hell (heaven?) that this demon was a student. After all, even though he was crouching you were sure he likely rivaled Sullivan in height. Long wild silver hair framed large, broad shoulders, and a metal mask covered his lower face.
What was most striking, besides his height and girth, was the fact his lower legs were those of a bird, complete with sharp curved talons.
After a long moment of just staring at the demon (who, to be fair, was doing the exact same) you realized you were probably being rude and offered an awkward wave.
The gesture seemed to shake him from his own thoughts, his pale skin turning dark with a blush as he stood, stepping out from behind the bookcase.
He…he was easily a foot taller than you, possibly even two. Your heart thumped as he stepped closer, so quiet despite being so massive.
"Can I help you?" You offered, not sure if your heart was thrumming because of instinctual fear of something being able to loom over you like he did, or something else just as instinctual that was highly inappropriate at the moment.
Realizing that you had a size kink at work was not on your to-do list for the day.
"You're Iruma's mother?" He asked, his voice a low rumble that did not help your situation any. Thankfully, the mention of your adopted son did help your thoughts focus, pushing those feelings away for you to address later.
"What did he do now?" You sighed as you pinched the bridge of your nose. You were excited - ecstatic even - that he had friends; a whole class he got along with as he found his place.
But damn, did he have to draw so much attention to himself?
The demon looked around, and you realized he was checking to see if there were any prying ears trying to listen in. Though, no one appeared to be giving either of you much attention as they studied hard to make up for misused time over the last semester. (Though a few looked like they were ready to bolt for some reason as well.)"Is... there somewhere private we can talk?"
You froze for a moment; two scenarios popping into your mind. Either Iruma caused even more chaos (But, why wasn't Kalego showing up to complain bitterly about the Misfit's class' antics?)
Or… well, the other situation was far less likely, so you doubted it was anything more than your libido finally waking up now that your other needs had been met.
"Y-yeah," You stammered as you tried to push those  thoughts to the dark recesses of your mind. "Let me show you my office. I, uh, take it you're one of the professors?"
"Right, sorry. I am Professor Balam," He introduced as he followed you around to the door of your office. "I'm substituting for the Netherworld history teacher today, but I'm actually the head of the Imaginary Creatures Research Division."
His words made you pause and turn towards him. This was Balam Shichiro? You had spent hours reading his books on ‘imaginary creatures’ or - as you knew them - normal plants and animals. There had been a sort of bittersweet humor as you read the theories and thoughts about the ‘defenseless and weak’ versions of the animals of the Netherworld.
You realized you were staring as he tilted his head slightly, curiosity apparent despite his odd mask covering the majority of his face. “Sorry! I just, uh, really like your book: 'Flora and Fauna of the Human Realm.' I’ve probably read it almost a dozen times by now.”
“Oh? Really?” He blushed, and you were pretty sure he was smiling behind his mask. “Thank you! I haven’t met a lot of people genuinely interested in my works outside the academic circle.”
“I’m a bit of a bookworm,” You excused as you opened the door of the office and gestured for him to enter. It was small and cozy for you, so you could only imagine how he felt. “I would offer some tea, but, um, I’m told that my tea-making skills are abysmal. I do have some snacks if you want?”
“Oh, um, no thank you," He shook his head, looking rather nervous himself.  Which was odd, to say the least, to have this towering giant of a demon looking so shy and nervous. "I'm here to talk about something Iruma said…”
You waited patiently for him to continue, but instead he seemed unable to. His gloved hands fidgeted anxiously, his dark eyes unable to meet yours.
“Hey,” You tried to soothe by resting a hand on his much larger wrist. His dark eyes finally met yours, looking rather surprised. “Despite the rumors, I am not that scary," You tried to tease to lighten the mood. "Well, unless someone defamed a book or something. And I highly doubt Iruma would do that.”
“He told me you both are humans,” He blurted out, making you freeze. You stared at him for a long time, positive you had misheard him. His mask did slightly muffle his words.
“I-I’m sorry, but he said what?”
--+--
Balam had spent most of his life studying other forms of life; dreaming and theorizing of what life was like in the human realm. Ideas supplemented only by ancient texts and legends.
And this.week? Being able to meet not one human, but two? He could hardly believe his luck. Especially considering Kalego's wariness.
Except, in a way, you two were a threat to Babyls, just not in the way the Guard Dog was thinking. If the others found out there were two humans amongst them, there would be chaos.
Yet, you were the ones most in danger. Many - if not all - other demons would love to tear you and Iruma to shreds.
Part of him wanted to study you, still amazed by the fact he had this opportunity. A human adult and child? Here? Not just in the Netherworld, but in Babyls as a student and staff member!
Yet another part wanted to protect you, whisk you both away to somewhere you would be safe from his fellow demons. Iruma woke dormant parental instincts with those wide trusting eyes, looking more adorable than a newborn hell-kitten. And you….
You were beautiful. He had been so caught up in the revelation that it had taken you acknowledging his presence with an awkward wave to snap him out of it.
He followed you like a hellhound pup, trying to mentally prepare himself for the impending conversation. "By the way, I'm aware you're human but I promise I don't want to eat you, just study you and learn everything I can about the human realm--"
He managed to get out the fact Iruma had admitted you were both human, and trailed off as he watched that soft smile on your face fade, along with your color. Worry took root in his stomach as you turned pale and stammered: "I'm sorry, but he said what?"
"He told me your story," He explained, stepping closer in case you fainted. He knew that humans were far more frail, could shock and fear cause you actual harm?
In an instant, you changed. A snarl appeared on your lips, your eyes narrowing and alight with a very familiar gleam.
The rage of a mother with a youngling in danger.
“Where is he?” You growled and he half-expected mana to flood the room in response to your anger.
Except you were human. You had no mana - couldn’t perform any magic - you were completely powerless and defenseless. You were weaker than the smallest insect.
But that didn’t seem to faze you in the least bit.
"He's okay," He tried to reassure, but it didn't answer your question.
"Where. Is. He?" You snarled again as you stepped closer, standing tall but still so small and cute.
“His next class, I believe he said it was with Professor Stolas.”
You were off like one of Bars’ arrows, darting past him, out of the library and down the hall. He didn’t even think before following after, easily keeping up with your sprint. You gave no care to the students darting out of your way, whispers growing in your wake.
You only stopped when you reached the courtyard Stolas was holding her class, Iruma’s blue hair standing out clearly among the rest as they sat in the grass while the devi-botany teacher demonstrated some of the techniques used to harvest valuable plants.
“He’s safe,” You whispered, pressing a hand to your chest as the manic energy fled your form. “Oh thank god, he’s safe.”
“Of course he is,” He reassured as he approached, his hand naturally finding its place on top of your hair, soothing the strands that had been displaced during your sprint. “You and Iruma are very…special,” He continued, careful of his words since you weren’t exactly somewhere private. “I would never hurt either of you, but I cannot say the same of my colleagues.”
“No shit,” You murmured with half a laugh. “I get a reminder of that every time someone sings the school anthem.”
“That would be rather daunting, wouldn’t it?” He hummed, reflecting on the song but from the perspective of a human.
There was a long pause before you shifted, pulling away from him with a dark look once more on your face. “So, cut to the chase. What are your terms?”
“Terms?” He asked, rather puzzled.
You gave a wry smile, “I’m not new to the blackmailing business. Not after working for a factory that was a cover for drug and money smuggling. What do you want in return for your silence?”
"Nothing!" He quickly defended, "I promise, I don't want anything in return."
It was apparent from the look on your face that you didn't believe him. He had to admit, compared to Iruma, you were so much more distrustful it surprised him. It was oddly reassuring that you weren't as open as trusting as your son. You were aware of the danger that you both were in, and willing to protect Iruma.
But you were powerless. So small and weak.
"I don't believe you," You stated as you crossed your arms. "I've been here long enough to know that altruism isn't common among demons. There has to be a reason, something you want."
He paused for a moment, looking around to assure that no one was trying eavesdropping. "I have always been fascinated by the human realm and the creatures there," He started once he assured that no one was within earshot. "So, to me, you and Iruma are extremely special. You're direct sources from that realm. I suppose I have hopes that perhaps we could discuss that in the future."
The look on your face reminded him of a creature on the precipice of trusting him; still unsure but willing to take the chance.
"I promise," He spoke softly, holding out his hand to you. "I will not tell another soul of your origins. I will protect you and Iruma, and all I want in return for whatever knowledge you're willing to share."
You bit your lip, but took his offering. Your hand was so small and tiny in his that he couldn't help but marvel. Your nails were pale, the tips rounded, not at all equipped to serve as weapons.
You were placing your trust in him. The significance wasn't lost on him, but he had meant every word he said. You and Iruma would have not only the protection he gave to everyone at Babyls, but more if needed.
Granted, you already had Lord Sullivan and Opera's protection as well. But being human in the Netherworld, he doubted there would be such a thing as being overprotected.
"Professor Balam!" Iruma's cheerful voice interrupted the moment, and you pulled away from him. Balam fought the instinct to pull you close like he did many students, except he was concerned his skinship habit would scare you off.
And that was the last thing he needed.
Instead he waved to the boy, who waved back, his smile bright. The smile morphed in confusion as Iruma noticed the smaller form next to the teacher, who had her hands on her hips and a disapproving look. "Mom? What are you…."
Realization struck the boy as he looked between Balam and you. "Oh. Oh."
"Yes, oh," You growled, "I am very disappointed in you, Iruma."
Iruma wilted, those wide blue eyes full of life became like a puppy's.
"Ma'am!" Az protested instantly as the boy shrank. always ready to defend Iruma. "Iruma has done nothing to warrant such displeasure."
"Yeah, Iru-mama!" Clara quickly appeared at Iruma's side, equally oblivious but steadfast as she clung to the boy. “Iruma-kins has been too busy studying with us to get into any trouble!”
"He knows what he did," You answered. "G… Devi, Iruma. You terrified me." The anger shifted into near tears as you moved forward, falling to your knees before Iruma and pulling him into a hug. "I was so scared."
"I'm sorry," Balam could hear Iruma answer, gripping her just as tight.
"What happened?" Az asked quietly, all the while Clara just joined in on the hug. You didn't even think before wrapping your arm around the girl.
"It's complicated," Balam explained, mentally taking notes on how you had seemed to automatically accept Clara. Was it because the girl was a close classmate of Iruma's? Or because she had initiated contact first?
"Right." You sniffed as you pulled away, wiping away the few tears. "We will have a conversation later, but right now you should probably hurry to your next class."
"Yes ma'am," Iruma answered, wiping his eyes. "I…I didn't mean to, by the way. It was an accident."
You nodded your head, ruffling his hair before shoo'ing the three down the hall. Balam watched with interest as you took a steadying breath, wiping your eyes once more.
"Do go easy on the boy,” Balam said softly. “I may have cornered him without realizing it."
"I just wish he would think before he acts some time,” You admitted quietly, still avoiding his gaze. Balam gave into temptation and began to pet your hair. Thankfully, you didn't startle as he half-expected, but seemed to readily accept his touch. “I never realized being too nice could be such a problem before I met him."
Met? That caught Balam's attention, his automatic stroking of your hair pausing in surprise. He wanted to ask more, however the 'bell' cried out at the start of the next class, reminding him sharply of the time.
His stomach turned as realization struck. "I'm late for my own class."
--+--
Throughout the day, you overheard students bemoaning professor Balam's return, which only made your stomach twist even more.
Not only had someone outside the family discovered your truth, but apparently he terrified the students. Granted, you didn't completely believe the rumours of him kidnapping students to conduct experiments on them, mainly because you couldn't see the staff that prided themselves for safeguarding their students allowing such behavior.
But it did make your own overactive imagination construct situations of the giant demon 'researching' you or Iruma, and finding the differences between humans and demons.
No. Sullivan wouldn't allow that. He swore you and Iruma were safe here. You had to trust him.
You knew you should tell Sullivan, but the downside of beginning to see him as a father-figure was you were now worried he'd be disappointed in you and Iruma. How would he react to the news? What would the fallout of the discovery be?
Would you be sent away, deemed a failure as a mother? Would he send both you and Iruma back to your former life?
Would the charade be over, and you and Iruma would be fair game to demons of the realm, no longer kept protected?
"...Apparently, the only teacher who's been seen around Balam is Kalego. Why is it the two scariest teachers are in agreement with each other?"
That… gave you an idea. You weren't very familiar with the teachers, and you weren't even that close to the other faculty other than when they helped you with the Library.
But, you were somewhat acquainted with Kalego. Mainly from the fact he was Iruma's homeroom teacher, and Iruma had recounted more than a few stories about him.
Were you actually considering this? He would not be happy with the intrusion. But you were such a mess you felt like it was your only option.
--+--
No one came into Kalego's office, except for Balam and Lord Sullivan. No other professor, and definitely no student. Especially since the Misfit class had claimed Royal One.
Yet, here you were, sitting in the other chair Lord Sullivan insisted he had. "What are you doing here?" The dark-hair demon growled, his irritation evident. He would be annoyed no matter what. But right now, it was the End of Terminus, which was stressful enough. And now someone dared to enter his private sanctuary? The only place he could escape from both student and teacher?
He had half a mind to summon Cerberion and ‘escort’ you back to the library where you belonged.
"I came to talk about Balam,” You said, apparently unconcerned about the dark glare he graced you with. “I heard you two are friends."
Kalego narrowed his eyes even further as he snarled. "We are old classmates, nothing like the ‘friends’ of the misfit class." Devil, the ‘friends’ Iruma, Alice, and Clara was the bane of his existence. Next to Lord Sullivan and Opera. And probably tied with Bar.
"Adult friends are just coworkers who don't annoy you every time they open their mouth," You stated as you waved your hand, as if dismissing his previous statement.  You shifted in the chair, looking at him intently. "But, I just wanted to know… how much do you trust him?"
Your question surprised Kalego, though he answered without even thinking. "I trust Shichiro with my life. I don't think there is another demon out there that I trust more."
You hummed thoughtfully, eyes unfocused and clearly deep in thought. Silence lingered, for which he was grateful.
He was still confused as to why you were here. Surely it was more than his opinion of his fellow teacher.
"Again. What are you doing here?" He growled. His office was his private sanctuary. He did not want anyone - especially Lord Sullivan's kin - to start wandering in whenever they pleased.
"What? You can come to me and complain about my son and his entire class but I can't come ask your opinion on someone?" You shot back, crossing your arms and challenging his look.
He huffed slightly, crossing his arms as well. "I came to you in hopes you could instruct your child to behave, as he is the obvious leader of his classmates. You're his mother, he'll listen to you." He also didn't dare approach Lord Sullivan with his issues, else he'd get caught up in the elder demon's fawning for the child.
"Does any child actually listen to their parent?" You sighed, but stood and stepped towards the door. "Do you really trust Balam that much?"
"He's loyal, even tempered, and for as powerful as he is, he's humble about it," He answered honestly. "Truly, the only thing that bothers me at times is his skinship habits.”
"Skinship?” You looked honestly confused, by the term, surprising him.
Where did Lord Sullivan hide you and Iruma that you both picked up on such strange concepts, but not other more basic ones? "The petting. He can't resist touching people. Or anything that moves, really.”
"Oh. I thought he was being condescending because I'm so much shorter than him."
Kalego scoffed at the idea. "Shichiro is rarely ever condescending, even towards the most idiotic students, let alone a fellow faculty member."
"Huh. Got it. Thanks for the talk Kalego.”
He barely acknowledged your departure with a grunt, focusing back on the homework he was trying to grade. Still, your words echoed in his thoughts: adult friends are just coworkers who don't annoy you every time they open their mouth.
That made a lot more sense than what the Misfit class whispered and prattled on about. If that was the definition of friend, then Shichiro certainly was counted among them.
Still, why were you curious about his opinion on Shichiro?

Iruma was quiet at supper later that evening, picking at his food instead of gobbling it like usual. You hadn't had a chance to really talk to him about what happened. It tore at you to see him so unlike himself, but at the same time, you kept replaying the moment over and over, the instant fear that something had happened to him. All rational thought had fled as you sprinted through the halls, desperate to see for yourself he was okay.
Lord Sullivan looked between you and Iruma, before whining “Okay, what happened between my two favorite people? I’ve never seen either of you so gloomy!”
You and Iruma's eyes met, and the boy looked down guiltily. Part of you wanted to hide the discovery…
But Sullivan had been nothing but caring. And since Kalego had more or less backed up the feeling you could trust Balam….
Maybe it would be okay.
“Well, so…" You started off hesitantly, setting down the cutlery before taking a deep breath. "Our secret’s been discovered. By one of the professors."
“Which Professor?” Sullivan asked in a tone and manner that reminded you that your ‘dopey’ adopted father was the chairdemon of Babyls, and apparently one of the most powerful demons in the Netherworld.
A shiver of fear went down your spine, your heart pounding in your chest. Memories of displeasing people in the past, and the often-disastrous results flashed through your mind.
You were a second away from moving to protect Iruma from the perceived threat when the boy answered Sullivan's question without a trace of fear that was flooding your system.
“Professor Balam,” Iruma confessed, sulking into his chair ashamed. “I didn't mean to, it just blurted out after he started fussing about me being a demon with no wings.”
“We’re safe then,” Opera said as they filled your cup full of tea, their own shoulders relaxing faintly. “He was my kohai back in Babyls, and I doubt he’s changed much.”
“Professor Balam has been nothing but nice!” Iruma quickly added. “I-I really am sorry that I blurted it out without thinking, and he lectured me about being more careful and everything for hours.”
“Opera is right,” Sullivan agreed reservedly. “Out of any of the professors, Balam would be the one I am least concerned about. However, you do need to be more careful, Iruma."
You finally relaxed into the chair with a relieved sigh. It was okay. Everything was going to stay the same, more or less, and you and Iruma were in no heightened danger.
"Now please, eat up!" Sullivan continued, reverting back to his usual self as he fussed over the boy. "I hate seeing my precious grandson look so gloomy when there’s food in front of him! You need to eat plenty to keep up your strength for studying!”
“I did make your favorites.” Opera offered a faint smile to Iruma before placing a hand on your shoulder. “And I’ll make some calming tea for you as well.”
You smiled back. Things were going to be okay.
--+--
"Hey, Iruma?" You knocked on the boy's door despite it being wide open, letting you see him bent over his desk, studying.
He looked up with a small smile. "Yeah mom?"
It warmed your heart that he still referred to you as such, even when it was just you and him. "Would you mind if I come in?"
You could see a flash of confusion on his face, still unused to the concept of his own, private space. You knew Sullivan loved to barge in whenever, but you wanted to help him get used to the idea he could set boundaries. "I, uh, yeah? Sure?”
"I wanted to talk to you about today--not to scold you, again," You clarified once you saw his expression fall. "I just wanted to be sure you knew the reason I got upset was because I worry a lot. Especially about you." You sat on the edge of his bed, gaze focused on your hands.
This was as awkward for you as it was for him, probably. Unlike Sullivan, who took to the role of doting grandfather like a duck to water, you weren’t so quick to change from protective coworker to actual mother figure. Yes, there was always that maternal protectiveness, but there were moments like these -- where you tried to help him grow into a better person. This you weren't so great at.
"You mean a lot to me," You continued honestly. "And I was so scared you were in danger. Things had been going so well I let my guard down…and well, I may have overreacted a little. So, I'm sorry if…"
Your words were cut off as he tackled you with a hug. You fell back into the bed, your arms wrapped automatically around him as he collapsed on the bed next to you. "I should have thought before saying anything, it just blurted out." He mumbled into your shoulder. "He was telling me about how he received his scar, and he thought we were alike in that way, and…He just seemed like such a nice, honest person."
"It's okay," you reassured, rubbing his back. "Everyone seems to agree that professor Balam is a good person, so all's well that ends well."
"He's been nothing but super nice, and kinda fussy like you were when we first met, lecturing me to be careful and everything. He even made some picture books to help with my studies!"
"Picture books?" Iruma untangled himself from you and ran over to his desk, while you struggled with the fact apparently the towering, crazed-looking demon made picture books.
Which made you wonder, had Iruma just confessed to Balam today. Or had it been a few days ago?
Your thoughts came to an abrupt halt when Iruma returned to your side with one of the cutest picture books you had ever seen before; chibi drawings of Az, Clara, and Iruma holding hands on the cover page.
You… were definitely going to have to apologize to the demon. Your heart gave a squeeze as you flipped through the pages with Iruma, beyond touched that he would do this for your adopted son. Not only was it the cutest thing you had seen, but Iruma explained it really helped him finally grasp different aspects of magic.
--+--
You waited until you knew that Professor Balam had an open period before slipping from the Library and down the hall towards the biology classrooms, easily finding the biology prep room.
It took a while to work up your bravery before knocking on the door. The courage quickly fled as the sound echoed down the hall and you wanted to flee with it. Apologies were not your strong suit, but you needed to be on his good side, now more than ever.
Not only did he seem to be genuine and nice, even going the extra distance to help Iruma pass his classes with frankly adorable picture books. But, he really could be someone you could trust with your secret.
Which, honestly, was a relief the more you thought about it. You could always use more allies in a world that would kill you if given the chance.
Before you could give in to the impulse to flee, the door opened. There was an instinctive shiver of fear as Balam looked down at you, reminding you how small you were compared to him.
Thankfully, instead of anger or annoyance, surprise colored his voice when he said your name. "How can I help you?"
"I wanted to apologize," you blurted out and held out your apology gift. "I shouldn't have been distrustful or rude. Opera said these were your favorites, so…"
He gently took the small package of sweets from your hand, looking at it carefully. "I wouldn't think Opera would remember after all this time."
"They did." Thankfully, you added mentally. Otherwise you would have stressed even more last night, and probably well into the morning. "Iruma showed me the books you made…"
His attention sharply turned back to you, his pale face turning pink. "He did?"
"Mmhmm." You nodded, happy to change topics. "They are so cute, I absolutely loved them! They even kinda help me so I can organize the library better by category…."
"You liked them?" He interrupted rather excitedly. "Really?"
"Uh, yeah?" How could someone not?  "I mean, they're easy to read, and those drawings are just too cute." Which, at the time, it had been hard to equate the tall, looming demon with those sweet drawings, but the way he was all but beaming at your praise confirmed that they were his.
It made that gnawing feeling of guilt even worse. You took a deep breath before biting the bullet. "I wanted to apologize for my actions the other day. It was wrong for me to jump to conclusions like that."
Balam's hand fell on your head rubbing your hair gently. "Don't worry about it, I learned a long time ago how protective mothers can be of their young. Though, one thing has been confusing me…" He admitted, "What do you mean when you said you met  Iruma?"
Oh. You forgot you had said that. It probably wasn't normal for a mother to speak about their child that way. Part of you wanted to deny and deflect, but…
You wanted to be honest, and trust him.  "Well, it's rather complicated. Could we, uh, speak in private?"
He tilted his head, bit moved aside and gestured for you to enter.
The room was lined with packed bookcases, vines growing from the ceiling, making it feel cozy and almost cramped, despite the fact it was nearly as spacious as a classroom.
"Iruma…isn't my biological son," You stated as soon as the door closed. "I love him as if he is, but you should know that if we're going to be completely honest."
The statement seemed to perplex Balam as he sat on the couch large and tall enough for him. "Not your son? Is that common for humans?"
"Well, it's not uncommon," You explained, hesitating for a moment before joining him. As large as the couch was, Balam took up enough space and caused the cushions to sink enough you ended up rather close.
Kalego's word of Balam's 'skinship' habits replayed in your mind as Balam's fingers ran along your scalp, as if you were some type of animal he was mindlessly petting. And despite the initial flare of fear of having someone unfamiliar touch you, the repetitive movement actually… felt nice. Just like the warmth his large body radiated, causing something instinctual in you to feel safe. Protected.
You really were finding some new things about yourself lately. "I don't know how much Iruma told you," You continued as you pushed those thoughts away. "But his birth parents were…neglectful, to say the least. And, well, it's hard not to love and want to mother the boy. But yeah, most humans if they see children in bad situations or orphans will want to step in and take care of them. We're social creatures, after all." You paused before cautiously continuing: "Are demons not that way?"
Sullivan after all readily adopted both you and Iruma, and then the fact the teachers were so dedicated to the students made you think that demonkind were as social as humans. But Balam's expression made you wonder otherwise."
"No, we aren't," He answered, "We mainly stick to our hierarchical clans, and anyone outside our family is not to be trusted. Their fates don't matter either, even if they're children"
"But, what about this school?" You asked, tilting your head to look up at him. "The faculty is so dedicated to the students. And you have a society not that different from ours."
"Well, most of that is thanks to the former demon kings…"
Balam was interrupted as the class bell screamed, causing both of you to sigh. You were low-key eager to discuss the differences between the two realms now that you had someone to talk to. Yes, you had Opera and Sullivan, but they were always busy or seemingly uninterested in the topic.
But the Library Battler was planning to help with reorganizing and shelving, and you were sure Balam didn't want to be late for his next class (unlike yesterday). You hesitated for a moment before pulling out your phone and offering it to him. "Could I get your number? In case I have any further questions?"
Balam blinked, surprised for a moment before his expression brightened considerably. "Of course, if you really want."
Your face felt flushed as you nodded, "I would really like to talk more, and plus I believe you mentioned you wanted to learn more, so you can text me whatever questions you think of."
He chuckled lightly, shooting you a glance out of the corner of his eye. "You may end up regretting that offer."
Maybe it was his hand slowly rubbing the back of your neck, or the deep rumble that made your stomach twist. Not with fear or anxiety, but something you weren't quite ready to face.
--+-- Su-ki-ma --+--
//So, what kind of social hierarchy do humans have?//
It was the first text that set off a long conversation via messaging as you tried to explain that it really depended on the culture. The Netherworld, as it turned out, was far smaller than the entirety of Earth. Granted, the Netherworld was far less hospitable than Earth, with much of it uninhabitable.
When you mentioned that humans had set foot on the moon, Balam forewent texting and called you, sure you were lying to him. It took a lot of work for you to convince him you were telling the truth despite the giggles in your voice.
But, it was just too funny to you. In your mind, you could see this tall, terrifying-looking demon, virtually geeking out every time you gave him a piece of information.
By the end of the call, you couldn't fathom ever being scared of Balam again. Granted, it was also three in the morning and you were feeling the long hours. But he was so earnest, eager to learn, eager to teach, that any fear had melted away.
You…had made your first real friend in the Netherworld. And you tried not to acknowledge the fluttering in your stomach. After all, just because he was kind, intelligent, gentle, and oddly handsome did not mean anything. You literally had just met him earlier this week. He was a demon. You had a family and a son; you didn't need to be greedy and try to develop a crush on top of it all.

Hello! For the mini event: Mairimashita! Iruma-kun & AU number 17
Of course, anon dear! Thank you so much for the request and I hope you enjoy the headcanons, as late as they are getting to you!
Okay, so I will admit that, other than House and a couple episodes of both The Resident and The Good Doctor, I haven't really watched many medical dramas and aren't really familiar with the various tropes and such normally used in them…am I familiar with the actual medical field? Yes, yes, I am. Did that actually help any with this AU? Nope, not really. But I did finally settle on an idea? Yes! Does the idea require you to suspend a large amount of disbelief and require you to ignore how much of this would actually be very, very illegal? Also yes!
Anyway, so this AU I imagined up does very much take place in a hospital. It's not only the largest hospital in the area but the one with the most prestige and a sterling reputation. It's also a teaching hospital, an important thing to know, but also houses a lot of the specialists and such that people are literally on wait lists for over a year to get into. This hospital is actually owned by Sullivan, who also does have a hand in the running of it and is Head of the Board of Directors, with the most say as to how the hospital itself actively operates, much to the displeasure of some of its staff, as Sullivan is something of an eccentric…no, that's going to be putting it too lightly. Sullivan is most definitely eccentric.
His eccentricities are most definitely on display when almost fourteen year old Iruma Suzuki is brought into the hospital after a vicious beating at the hands of his latest employer. The boy is held at the hospital to be treated but because there's just so much evidence of repeated injuries and neglect, social services is called in. Social Services investigation into Iruma's parents discover a staggering amount of neglect for their son and that they have been forcing him to work at various jobs to support their own gambling habits and pay the bills. The boy has never even been to school.
Anyway, in the end, they don't really care if their parental rights might get lost. Iruma's parents willingly relinquish their parental rights to him and it looks like Iruma is going to be held, after he has healed and been released from the hospital, in a group home until a suitable foster family can be found for him. But Sullivan had taken an interest in Iruma, no doubt helped along by the fact that Iruma's initial doctor and the one in charge of his treatment plan was Dr. Opera, Sullivan's adopted son. And Sullivan's interest in the boy led to Iruma Suzuki becoming the second son Sullivan would adopt and spoil, despite being in his sixties at this point…something about Opera never settling down and giving him grandchildren so Sullivan would have to adopt his own.
While Iruma is technically his adopted son, Sullivan very much treats him as his precious grandchild and Iruma finds a fatherly figure in Sullivan, who spoils Iruma rotten. Opera, meanwhile, also takes an interest and welcomes Iruma into the family, becoming someone Iruma both looks up to and aspires to be like.
Sullivan decides and, after discussing the matter with Opera himself, that Iruma shall join the family business and when Sullivan passes will be the one to not only inherit the business (and make no mistake, a hospital is very much a business) and Sullivan's spot on the Board of Directors. He'll not only be expected to learn academically, and learn quickly, but Iruma becomes a volunteer candy-striper at the hospital as soon as he's healed and shadows Opera and Sullivan throughout the years.
Which leads to present day, when Iruma has gone through enough schooling and grueling training and studying to become a resident. The story really becomes his daily life as a resident doctor at this teaching hospital, him meeting the other residents and interacting with the doctors, nurses, and other staff members at the hospital, along with the weird, zany, sometimes sad patients he interacts with and treats, along with exploring some of the pressure he feels, knowing he's expected to run this hospital someday, along with cute family moments between Iruma and his adopted 'grand'father and adopted brother.
Now, to get into some of the wide and crazy cast of characters that Iruma does have to learn how to deal with and manage, because like, isn't that half the fun, having all these secondary characters to add to the overall plot, all while having fun little plotlines of their own?
So, first off, when Iruma arrives for his residency, Sullivan really entrusts Iruma to an actual doctor who really is supposed to mentor and help teach Iruma. Iruma had been hoping to do his residency in the pediatric ward under Opera, but for some reason Sullivan refused to allow it. Instead, Iruma is doing his residency under the watchful (and spiteful, because this doctor most certainly does not want to have to put up with being a mentor to anyone, and considers the time he has to waste teaching Iruma as time he could be spending elsewhere) eye of Dr. Kalego Naberius, Head of the ER Department. The ER at this particular hospital is always insanely busy, with the doctors, residents, and nurses getting to see a little bit of everything, honestly, so Kalego does get Sullivan's insistence that Iruma do his residency solely there. Every resident has to do at least a shift a week in the ER, since there is never enough staff there, but Iruma's residency is done solely in the ER Department and solely under the eye of Dr. Kalego. The two don't always get along, honestly, but I do see them growing to at least strongly respect each other.
The various teachers are, of course, doctors in various wings and departments throughout the hospital, except for Balam, who I do see as Head of the Pharmacy Department, since a hospital that size does, of course, need it's own pharmacy. A pharmacist himself, Balam has an encyclopedic knowledge of all pharmaceuticals, both medicinal and holistic. Now Balam looks really scary, especially because a childhood accident left him with some noticeable facial scarring, but the man is a gentle giant and after Iruma stopped being so frightened of him, I could see him and Balam getting along fantastic, even back before Iruma became a resident. Throughout his schooling years, before going to university, I think Balam took Iruma under his wing and the boy spent a lot of time in the pharmacy, learning a lot from Balam. Iruma still makes it a point to stop by to see Balam as often as he possibly can, and honestly, Balam shows up to the ER quite often anyway, because he and Dr. Kalego are childhood best friends who take lunch breaks together so he's another important 'teacher and mentor' figure to Iruma overall.
The surprising twist here, but one I really liked and just made sense to me. A child prodigy, Ameri Azazel graduated high school ridiculously early and I see her being the same age, at most a year older, than all the residents. However, she's actually Dr. Azazel, though still a fairly new doctor, only a year out of her own residency. She most often works in the pediatric wing with Opera, but does do shifts in the ER as needed.
I'm sure you're wondering…are the other residents Iruma's classmates in canon? Mostly, yes! How could I not? But there's still a few surprise twists, haha.
One of those surprise twists is that I really don't see Clara as an actual resident. Nope, I see her as being a fairly significant member of the hospital's kitchen staff. Though she doesn't do all the planning and overseeing of the hospital's meal plans and such, because the Head of Food Services does that, I see her being at least a sous chef in the kitchen itself, but she often shirks her duties here and there to actually go and deliver the meals to patients, which really should be left to a lower ranking member of the kitchen staff. She just finds it really fun to get to go and explore the hospital and see all the different staff members (and patients, though giving the patients their meals is actually supposed to be left to the nurses) and despite the many write-up's she's had over it, Sullivan and even Clara's own superior refuse to fire her or make her stop it. After all, she clearly means no harm and really just is a kind of nuisance at worst.
Another person I don't see as being a resident is Elizabetta. I actually see her as being a new nurse in the hospital. She works in different departments as needed, and honestly, though she's good enough at her job and does have a really good heart, with a lot of compassion for the patients, it's obvious she's really not that interested in making a huge career out of nursing. She actually just really wants to marry a handsome doctor who's wealthy enough so that she can become a stay at home wife and then mother and live a picture perfect, happily married life.
The last person I don't see as being a resident doctor is Kamui Caim. Instead he's an intern pharmacist under Balam. An odd, weird-looking little duck, the boy's honestly a little bit of an incel and definitely a huge pervert, who becomes known for being a little inappropriate with both the female nurses, doctors, and patients. However, when it comes to his actual area of expertise, Kamui is actually a brilliant pharmacist and really helps not only fill the astounding amount of prescriptions that come through each day, but is able to help prescribe and treat the various small ailments of people sent to the pharmacy for help instead of an actual doctor needing to waste their time treating them.
So, that leaves us with the other residents. The most important two are Alice Asmodeus and Sabro Sabnock. Both men have relatives who sit on the Board of Directors for the hospital. Sabro's uncle, in particular, raised the boy to believe that, when Sullivan was gone, Sabro's uncle would run the hospital and then pass it on to Sabro, so the boy was pushed to prepare for that from a young age. Brash and arrogant but actually really good-hearted, Sabro would like to specialize in sports medicine but was pushed by his family to follow in his uncle's footsteps and become a surgeon and his residency is done in that department.
Alice, meanwhile, is prim and proper and determined to make the most of every second of his residency. He also has quite the ego, but deservedly so, as he is brilliant and everyone has very high hopes for him as a practicing doctor. Due to an accident during childhood that had left his sister badly burnt, and witnessing her recovery and various surgeries and skin grafts afterwards, Alice does his residency primarily in the hospital's Burn Wing and hopes to specialize in that field of reconstructive surgery.
Another resident hoping to become a surgeon is Goemon Garp. Goemon was born with a rather extreme form of facial deformity and because of that, he was badly bullied growing up. It wasn't until after many medically necessary surgeries and then some extensive plastic surgery, finished by mid-high school, that Goemon grew to look relatively normal, though he's still not the most handsome man out there. However, he's finally happy with the way he looks and he wants everyone to have that opportunity, so he would, after his residency, like to specialize in cosmetic surgery.
Picero Agares, however, was well known to those in the hospital even before he becomes a hospital. Picero has suffered from narcolepsy from the time he was a child and was treated at the hospital. He hopes to become a doctor working in the hospital, specializing in sleep disorders…though everyone is a little shocked, as Picero has always been anything but friendly, even as a child, and probably has the worst bedside manner out of any of the residents.
The last of those residents who know what they want to specialize in, Soi Purson was born severely hearing impaired. He received cochlear implants in both ears by the time he entered middle school, which opened up a whole new world for him, really. Because of that experience, he really decided that he wanted to become an audiologist and is doing his residency primarily in the hospital's Audiology Department.
Schneider Allocer is an absolute genius, even rivalling Ameri. While he is a resident doctor, he's actually not sure what he would like to specialize in. There's too many opportunities, too many possibilities, too many areas to learn and grow his expertise in with hands on experience. He bounces around the various departments, along with the other three residents who have not figured out what they would like to specialize in.
Keroli Crocell is one of those three. Her family has always put a lot of pressure on her to go into medicine, to become a doctor so that she could have 'the best life', be financially secure, and bring honor to the family name. So she's gone to school, always done well, always brought honor to her family, and is doing her residency. But honestly, she'd rather be doing anything else, but especially she'd rather be playing with her band, like she does in secret on weekends, doing gigs at clubs around the city.
That leaves the other two undecided residents as Lied Shax and Jazz M. Andro. To be honest, though neither of them has decided on a specialty, Lied actually becomes a hit in the pediatric wing, while Jazz is noted to have the best bedside manner out of all the residents.
