okay so yesterday me and my people who are on vacation went to universal studios. as you may or may not know (i did not) there are quite a few rides where you're in a moving thing (chair, cart, tram, etc) and that thing will move based on what it happening on a screen in front of you (it's a bigass screen too)
anyways, me and the peoples did quite a few of these rides, (we were at the park from opening to closing, don't really know how this relates but i wanted to add it) and once we had left and got in thr car, i shit you not it genuinly felt like said rides.
like it was such a weird experience because obviously i know it's not one of the rides, but it felt really freaking similar. it was like out of the windows is the screen, and the car is the thing.
there's nothing you can do to control your surroundings, so you just have to sit and watch. i'm also wondering if this might have been a dissociative thing, because based on how i've heard it be described, it was pretty fucking similar.

EXCLUSIVE: Following his acclaimed role in the Showtime series Fellow Travelers, Jonathan Bailey may have found his follow-up, and it’s a big splash. Sources tell Deadline that he is in early talks to star in Universal and Amblin Entertainment’s new Jurassic World movie. Scarlett Johansson is also in talks to star. Gareth Edwards will direct. The studio recently dated the pic to bow on July 2, 2025 and moved fast to find a director, with Edwards spending all of last week meeting with execs. After impressing producers Steven Spielberg and Frank Marshall, who helped launch the franchise in the ’90s, an offer soon followed. Pre-production is expected to ramp up once a deal is sealed. The new movie will be a fresh take, with Jurassic World cast members Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard not expected to return, nor the original trilogy’s thespians Jeff Goldblum, Laura Dern and Sam Neill. David Koepp penned the script. The film will be will be executive produced by Spielberg through Amblin, and Marshall and Patrick Crowley will produce through Kennedy-Marshall. EVP Production Development Sara Scott and Creative Executive of Production Development Jacqueline Garell will oversee the project for the studio. Bailey has strong ties with Universal as he is set to appear in its anticipated Wicked adaptation. The studio is high on the project after making it the big reveal during its CinemaCon presentation, and sources they were high on his performance following the shoot. On top of Wicked, Bailey is also coming off Fellow Travelers. The limited series also starred Matt Bomer and earned Bailey a Critics Choice Award for his work, making him a frontrunner in the Emmy race. Bailey is repped by CAA, Anonymous Content and Conway van Gelder Grant Ltd.

It’s been a month since Eddie and I broke up. It was touch and go for a while. The night of the breakup I asked for 2 hours. It doesn’t take 2 hours to basically pick up your whole life. Alex and I took all our clothes and toiletries but we still had to come back and get the rest of our things. I decided it would be best to leave all the baby’s stuff there, but excluding that I still had a ton of things. Bobby and Athena served as the buffer between Eddie and I. Athena would text me to tell me that Bobby told her Eddie and Christopher would be out of the house from 12-4 pm and stuff like that. Eddie and I still haven’t spoken since that night even though he tried. He gave me a good 2 days before he was blowing up my cell and trying to talk and work things out, but I was serious when I meant Eddie and I were done. The betrayal still keeps me awake at night if I let my mind wander enough and the events starting on the night in question and the big blow up play in my head like a movie. Alex and I moved in with Buck for the time being while I figured out the next step in our lives. Buck was more than happy to welcome us and he’s been accommodating in any way he can. He’s been going with me to my doctor appointments, driving me around a lot since I’ve gotten a little bigger and lazier to do it myself, and even taking a parenting class with me. Even though I had Alex already a lot of things have changed in the last 12 years.  Speaking of all the things Buck is doing for me, Eddie is quite pissed at him because of it. Also, the fact that Buck is the one that told me about Eddie’s infidelity. So everything has been quite an adjustment. It was morning and Buck was off today so that meant family breakfast. Which was really more me cooking whatever I was craving and everyone being too lazy to complain or make anything else. Today was chicken, waffles, spicy syrup, bacon, eggs, and french toast. (Don’t judge but I craved this my whole pregnancy.) Buck came down from the room and sat at the table. The reason I call it the room is because technically it’s both Buck and I’s room. See Buck only has two rooms in his loft but the other room is Alex’s and it’s not exactly big enough to share. So Buck and I share the room in the sense that both of our things are there like clothes, shoes, jewelry, little things like that. Buck did buy a couch though, so that way he has something to sleep on. Right now Buck was trying to convince me to go with him and Alex to pick up his parents later. “They would love to see you. I mean it’s been over a year since they last saw you.” “Yeah and since then I got knocked up and then left a single mom. Again.” “True, but you look really cute pregnant and they haven’t seen this glow.” He said, as he pointed his fork at me. “That may be the case but seriously I’m not up for that yet.” Buck could tell my mood was becoming somber, so he let it go. “Alright. Did I tell you guys what happened yesterday at work? Some guy’s kids buried him in the sand and splashed water on him when a freak flash of lightning hit and turned the sand into glass. It was insane.” “Buck I’m trying to eat.” “Mom, that's actually really cool and mother nature at work. What did that guy say in that really old dinosaur movie ‘life always finds a way’. Life is science.” “Did she just call Jurassic Park a really old movie?” I asked Buck. I turned to Alex. “That movie came out the year I was born for your info.” “How do you think I feel? I’m older than you by two years.” Buck joked. The conversation kept flowing from there and eventually it was time to clean up and start the day. Since the break up with Eddie I haven’t really been writing much so my day usually centers around Buck and Alex. I felt like a 50’s housewife. After making sure everyone had everything they needed for their day I would tidy the house, wash dishes, do laundry. It was a feminist nightmare but I was so numb I didn’t really care. I’ve been seeing a therapist but it didn’t help as much as I thought it would. Most people describe therapy as this life-altering interaction but for me it felt like when you were called to the guidance counselor in school about bullying or something. Like I was put on the spot. Don’t get me wrong there was improvement but I just didn’t feel satisfied or “fixed” in a sense. We dived into my relationship issues a lot and I understand what Eddie was saying. The “relationship” that Buck and I had while Eddie and I were still together was emotional cheating, which proved my point. We were bad for each other. Eddie and I both rushed into this relationship after commitment issues on both sides, so we were destined for doom. Either way the pain inside of me from his affair with Ana wasn’t going away because I know that what I did didn’t warrant that. Instead of breaking it off or establishing clear boundaries, Eddie decided that cheating was the best route. So here I am feeling like less than a person over a toxic relationship we both should have some coming to an end. Buck’s POV Since Y/n didn’t want to come with me I was forced to suffer with my parents alone. It was worth it since Albert was there. “Uh, Albert, hey, check this out.” I showed Albert Y/n’s ultrasound picture. It was so cool to be a part of this process and I couldn’t help but show it off. “You brought more than takeout.” Albert replied, “Well, uh, Chimney didn't tell you?” “Yeah, that I've been gone less than a year and you're a father again? No.” God I hope my parents didn’t hear that. “Uh, no, not-not exactly.” “But that's a…” Albert started. “Baby. Buck...?” My mom was suddenly standing behind me. “Is there something you need to tell us? You're gonna be an uncle again!” My mom shouted as she jumped to conclusions. “Phillip! Maddie and Howard are gonna have another baby!” My mom yelled as she went to hug Chimney. “What?” Chim asked, confused. “That's fantastic! I had a feeling when you bought this house.” My dad replied. “I mean, it's a little soon to be pregnant again, but... Why not?!” Mom said. “This is very good news, Howard. Why didn't you tell us sooner? “ Chimney’s stepmom asked. “Uh, guys... Guys, we're... not pregnant.” He said. “You're not?” Mom asked. “No.” “Then who is?” Mom asked as she turned to me. “That’s what I was trying to say. Y/n is pregnant again. It’s a girl.” “You and Y/n are having another baby?” My dad asked. “No, mom is having a baby with Eddie.” Throughout all the confusion, everyone forgot Alex was sitting at the table on her tablet. “But, they're not together anymore so we're living with dad.” “Okay, let’s not deepdive into it. Give your mom some privacy.” When we got home it was time for a talk about privacy. “So Y/n and living with you while she’s pregnant with another man’s baby?” My dad asked. “And you’re going to help raise the baby?” “It's not like that. We’re not together, I’m just helping her while she figures a few things out. Also, if she wants of course I’ll help raise the baby but we haven’t thought that far ahead. We’re taking things day-by-day.” The way everyone except Maddie, Chimney, and Alex were looking at me I could tell they had a lot to say. “I think it's…” My mom started. “Here we go. “ I knew I was about to get an earful. “Great.” She finished. That shocked me. “Uh, yeah?” “You’re a wonderful father to Alex and I know if you need to be you’ll be a wonderful father to this little girl as well.” Dad replied. “Not only are you a good father but you’re a good man.” My mom said as she stepped towards me for a hug. I wrapped my arms around her. “Here. Dad, you want to see?” I said showing him the sonogram “Oh, absolutely.”  He said as he took the phone from me. “Phillip. You are going to allow this?” Howie’s dad asked. “It's not really for me to allow.” Dad replied. “A man cannot raise a child fathered by another man, it's unnatural.” Howie’s father reiterated. “Says the expert in child-rearing, huh? I would think you would relate to Buck's decision. Father them and let someone else raise them.” “Howie.” Albert explained. “Whoa, Chim. It's-it's okay.” I said. “A man who cannot control his family is not a man.” Howie’s dad added to already building tension. “Maybe a man who's too controlling forces his sons to hide from him in another country.” My dad fired back. “Okay, easy. Come on, Dad.” I said. “Children need to learn that actions have consequences.” “I'm sorry, but how is any of this your business?” my mom asked Howie’s dad. “He did announce it to everyone.” Albert’s mom said. ‘Well, that wasn't exactly my choice.” I said, making it clear. “It was a bad choice.” “My dad helping out my mom wasn’t a bad choice, you’re just mean.” Alex called out. “Alex. Honey, you can not talk to adults like that.” “See this is exactly what I am talking about. Your child has no manners and you plan to raise another?” “Oh, that's rich.” My dad replied yet again, kicking everything off. Everyone started to argue until due to a storm the lights went out.   “Buck, grab some candles, we got the doors”. Howie called me. As mom played with Jee and Alex, Maddie and I talked. “I think maybe Albert was right.” I said to Maddie. “Oh, I wouldn't say that out loud.” “Ever think about what it might've been like...?” “What?” “If Daniel had lived.” I asked her. “Yeah, sometimes.” “You?” Just then the lights came back on and everyone was relieved. “I think it would've been just like this.” Y/n’s POV (Think of this happening at the same time as Buck’s) I was sitting on the couch after cleaning when I heard a knock on the door. “Did you forget your key or something Buck?” I swung open the door and there stood Eddie. I crossed my arms and clenched my fists tight. The nerve he had to show up here. “What are you doing here Eddie?” “I’m here to talk to you. You haven’t spoken to me in a month. At least not without a third party being involved. I haven’t gone to any of your appointments since then.” “You barely went before so what’s the difference?” “Y/n, how long are we going to do this? Huh? Are we gonna be those parents that drag their kids through hell?” “Don’t do that. I can’t do this right now.” “So when are we going to do this? Talk things out?” “I don’t know Eddie. It’s only been a month.” “We need to talk about this.” “No. I need time. Time away from you. I’ll tell you when I’m ready to talk to you.” I went to shut the door on Eddie but he put his hand there to stop it. “I miss you Y/n. Christopher missed you.” “I miss Christopher too. He’s more than welcome over here, because you’re pissed with Buck you won’t let him over here.” Eddie was quiet. “Eddie, I want to move forward but I need to do it at my own pace. The way you’re behaving isn’t helping.  I mean I feel like you aren’t even sorry.” “I am sorry. I will always be sorry for what I did. Not only because I hurt you but because I destroyed everything we built when I did it. I’m so sorry Y/n.” “I hear you Eddie I do, but I still need time. Okay?” “Alright. I’ll go. I love you y/n.” I still loved Eddie but I didn’t know if I was in love with him anymore. “Goodbye, Eddie.” Time went on and eventually Buck came home. “Hey, where’s Alex?” “She’s spending the night at Maddie and Chim’s house.” “I thought the house wasn’t done and what clothes is she going to wear?” “Our daughter is a sneaky one. She put her clothes in my truck along with a sleeping bag. How am I supposed to say no to that?” “I’m sure it’s really easy but she’s got you wrapped around her finger.” “Yeah, she does.” Buck came and sat down beside me on the couch. “So it’s just the two of us tonight, what are we doing? “I was thinking of doing something a little risky…” “Oh really?” “Oh yeah.” “How risky we talking?” “Oh you know, I’m gonna change and slip into something a little more comfortable, and then…” “Then what?” “We’re gonna eat so much ice cream our guts explode and watch trashy reality tv.” “Now that’s what I’m talking about.” Buck said. We’d always had that joking relationship that could be borderline sexual but now that we actually live together the sexual part was definitely a no-no. “I’ll be back.” I went upstairs to change. “What kind of ice cream we doing tonight, Rocky road or fudge?” “Ooh, let’s do a rocky road tonight.” I started to change when I felt a warm sensation in my pants. I looked down at my now ruined pants and noticed blood. I carefully rushed down the stairs. Buck was facing away from me but heard me come down the stairs. “You changed already, that was fast.” He turned around and saw my expression. “What’s the matter?” “I’m bleeding.” I could tell Buck wasn’t catching on to what I was saying. “Like down there.” Buck became a panicked nervous mess. “Oh my god! Okay. Let me grab my shoes and my keys and we’ll throw you in the car.” Before I could say anything he darted off. He looked around the front door and then made his way into the living room. “Where are my shoes? Where are my keys?” “Buck calm down. Your keys are on the hook and your shoes are in the room. I’m gonna put on a pad and change, while I’m doing that, call Dr.Manning.” “Alright.” I went into the room changed and put on a pad in case of more bleeding. When I came back down, Buck was waiting on me. “Dr.Manning is going to meet us at the hospital.” “Okay.” We made our way downstairs and got into the car when I realized I forgot to call Eddie. I went to reach my phone and couldn’t find it. “Buck, can you call Eddie? I left my phone inside the loft.” “Yeah of course.” Buck called Eddie but it went straight to voicemail. “Hey Eddie, I’m taking Y/n to the hospital to see Dr.Manning. Call me back when you get this,” He hung up and turned towards me. “Are you okay? Are you in pain?” “No, I'm doing okay, just the bleeding.” I was trying to keep a leveled head but my mind was racing. It was going to places I didn’t want it to go. “You know when I was pregnant with Alex I had a scare kind of like this. I was in the hospital for 2 days. They said her heart rate was low and there was a chance I could lose her. What if I lose this baby Buck?” My tears were threatening to spill from my eyes. Buck grabbed my hand and caressed it.“Don’t think like that. We’re going to see Dr.Manning and she’s going to tell us that that beautiful baby girl of yours is okay and whatever is happening is probably normal, okay?” “Okay. Thanks Buck.” “Of course.” He said as he kissed my hand. Buck and I arrived at the hospital where Dr.Manning was waiting. She ushered us into the ultrasound room and began to take a sonogram. “Okay, let’s take a look.” She moved the wand around and I saw how she squinted at the screen. “Here’s the baby right here. Let’s hear this heartbeat.” She moved over and I heard her heartbeat. It sounded good or at least I think. “That’s a strong and healthy heart beat right there.” I let out a relieved breath. She moved the wand around more until she stopped at this big blob. “Okay, here’s the problem. You’re suffering from Placenta previa. It’s when the placenta completely or partially covers the opening of the uterus. How bad was the bleeding?” “If I was on my period I would say it’s a light flow.” “And are you still bleeding now.” “No, I don't feel anything.” “I’m gonna keep you here for the rest of the night and monitor everything. In the morning I’ll let you know whether or not you’ll be discharged. Let me just say since it’s your second child it’s more than likely gonna resolve itself. What’s your birthing plan?” “I planned on doing a vaginal birth.” “Okay. We’re going to do more appointments than usual and if this resolves itself we can go ahead with that plan. If not we’re going to have to do a c-section delivery. Okay?” “Alright.” “Dad is more than welcome to stay if he would like. I’m going to make sure a room is prepared and ready for you. Let me know if you need anything.” I didn’t feel like correcting her about Buck in any way. “Okay.” She departed the room and Buck and I sat there almost as if we were waiting on the other person to say something first.” “Do you want me to stay with you?” Buck said, breaking the silence. “Only if you’d like to.” “Of course I would. Do you want me to go home and get anything?” “No I’m okay. It’s just for the night right?” “Right.” Soon a nurse came and brought us to the room we would be staying in for the night and we got comfortable. Sometime throughout the night the anxiety left me and before I knew it I was asleep. I was awoken by a nurse and Dr. Manning coming in. Buck was already awake. “Good morning. How are you feeling?” “I’m fine. Just nervous to be honest.” “Well I have good news, we found nothing concerning while monitoring you over night so that means you can go home. We’ll be having more frequent visits but I’m sure you have nothing to worry about.” “That’s great thanks doc.” Buck replied. “Just doing my job, but this does mean a few things. No moderate or strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, standing for long periods of time and sadly no sexual intercourse or sexual activity that could lead to orgasm. At least until the baby is born.” I wanted to dig a hole so deep and crawl in it. “Any followup questions?” “Nope, I’m good. You got any, Y/n?” Buck replied with a grin. “She’s covered everything. Thanks, we’ll be out of your hair now.” Dr. Manning said her goodbyes to us, leaving alone to brew in the awkwardness. “No sex until the baby gets here. Well I guess there’s no point in you living with me anymore.” I believe that was Buck’s bad attempt at a joke. “Haha, so funny. Besides it’s mostly if the issue doesn’t resolve itself I think.” I don’t know why I answered like it was a serious possibility. “Let’s go. I’m hungry.” I quickly made my way out of the room in order to avoid talking about this any further.

Santa Makes His Rounds Amongst the Dinosaurs
A certain jolly old elf sporting red and white summer wear is popping up around Jurassic World, taking time out of his busy schedule to visit with the dinosaurs...and find out what they want for the holidays!
During the normal course of our dinosaur feeding and performance shows, guests are delighted to see handlers joined by Santa himself, who takes the mic for a moment to get some one-on-one time with our biggest stars.
During her morning feeding, Santa asked Rexy if she would like a big teddy bear. When the T. Rex roared in apparent response, Santa staggered back slightly and waved a hand over his face. "How about some nice breath mints instead?"
Later, at Triceratops Territory, Santa was allowed to scratch Bakhita under the chin. "You're an herbivore, right? How about some gingerbread? Oh, who am I kidding? You're sweet enough!"
Santa has also been seen riding aboard the Jurassic Tour truck, alongside a speedy flock of Gallimimus. In one video posted to the Jurassic World YouTube channel, Santa can be heard to say: "Call the reindeer, tell them they're fired! These guys are way faster!"
The absolute highlight of these seasonal escapades has surely been the Mosasaurus Feeding Show, where an apparently befuddled Santa asked the audience if they could tell him where to find Muse. The cheeky Mosasaurus finally leapt for her meal and splashed down with abandon, soaking Santa to his jolly old bones. Mister Claus was then heard to say, sputtering through his dripping beard, "Looks like someone's on the naughty list!"
It's uncertain how long Santa will stick around to see the dinosaurs, so keep an eye out. At St. Nick said during the Raptor Encounter show:
"On Charlie! On Delta! On Echo! On Blue! Merry Christmas to all, and especially you!"

No real thoughts just drunk cuddly Aaron and an amused Derek x
This idea is so cute and I just...I love it. You sent this so long ago. I am thinking these thoughts too. I honestly tried to make something out of this and failed miserably. Here's a little shorty inspired by Jimmy Buffet dying and me having just watched Jurassic World. His cameo is one of the best things in the trilogy. (Honestly, if a dimorphodon was all up in my grill I'd save the drinks too.) Anyway. Short, cute, booze soaked.

"To Jimmy Buffet!" Penelope cries, thrusting her hand in the air. Margarita splashes over her fingers.
"To Jimmy," Hotch responds in kind. His margarita is long gone and he's definitely not going to have another. No, that would be a mistake. Instead he's planning on staying rooted to the spot, fingers twined with Derek’s, eyes heavy lidded and half closed.
"Who?" Derek asks only half interested in what they're babbling about. He's watching baseball and that's far more interesting. Hotch’s cheek is heavy against his shoulder and there's no way either of them is getting up any time soon. He's happily trapped. Penelope smacks him in the back of the head with her lime sticky fingers.
"Don't you dare."
Hotch turns his face, angling his chin upward and kisses Derek with salty tequila lips. "Bed..." he whispers, heavy with implications. Derek doesn't hesitate.

For spooky season I recently dusted off my bottle of Dark Ride by Xyrena, which is meant to emulate the smell of the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland: "A realistic interpretation of theme park water rides, the fragrance features chlorinated water notes, the aromas of theatrical fog and pyrotechnics, a hint of mildew and ozonic notes." I love it but after a long day of wearing it the dry-down can make me a little queasy, and it doesn't translate well on clothing (need to apply it nude)
This sounds amazing! I’ve never heard of this perfume house before and their aesthetics as well as their actual scents are so RTMI that I have no idea how they passed me by.
https://xyrena.com/products/dark-ride%E2%84%A2-extrait-de-parfum
The various efforts to capture the olfactory experience of theme park rides and locations are really fascinating to me, as someone who’s not a theme park attendee but who’s obsessed with the way they’re made — I assumed at first this was an indie oil perfume so your application description had me like “naked????” but holy shit… nice…

Tiresias, Actaeon and Gator's Oedipus Complex
This post will contain some spoilers for episodes after 5.3. In case you haven't already noticed, season 5 has been drowning in bathroom references. Dot lures Donny Ireland to the master bathroom to attack him with fire, then attacks him again in the restroom of the Gas 'n Go with frozen water, causing him to slip to his death by hitting his head on the toilet.
Roy relaxes "in moist repose" in his hot tub, and later perches on the closed toilet as his twin daughters take a bubble bath. He mentions a law that forbids horses from sleeping in bathtubs. Dot has to sponge her pits in Lorraine's commode. Wayne tells Indira he threw up in the downstairs commode. Danish tells Wayne, "Broke his skull in the commode of a filling station." Witt says, "I'm guessing there was a perp in the commode?" Dot attacks Gator's buddy Pace with a toilet tank lid during the Halloween home invasion.
Gator stops at the Gas 'n Go to "drain the snake," and Roy calls Donny "the guy with his head in the toilet." When Mama Munch investigates the noise upstairs, we see the bathroom as she walks down the hall, and it remains in the left side of the shot as we discover Munch in the rocking chair. Later, an overhead shot tracks from that bathroom to the bedroom. The description of the first episode of season 5 notes, "A series of unexpected events lands Dot in hot water and she is plunged back into a life she thought she left behind." In episode 5.3, Witt reads a newspaper story that finds Gator "in hot water" again. Bathrooms seem like dangerous places. Movies like "The Shining" and "Psycho" have depicted bathrooms as especially threatening for women, but this season finds them just as treacherous for men. I am reminded of a scene from "Jurassic Park" in which a female T-Rex (they were ALL female) kills a guy named Donald on the toilet. And, as Gator points out, Dot's a bird, and birds used to be...dinosaurs. My recent post on Tiresias reminded me that there are two myths from Greek mythology that involve unfortunate men seeing a goddess bathing naked, and being punished for it. The first is Tiresias himself, who, in one account, is blinded by Athena for the transgression of seeing her naked. The other incident involves the hunter Actaeon, who stops at a spring to cool off, only to see Artemis (Diana) naked as she bathes with her nymphs. As punishment, she splashes Actaeon with water, turning him into a stag. He is then chased and torn apart by his own hunting dogs, who don't recognize their master. Remember: Roy is present as his twin daughters bathe. Do the daughters represent these two goddesses? Gator has been likened to Oedipus. So, what if, as a teen, he saw Nadine bathing naked, setting off a sexual attraction to his (step)mother? It seems as though Munch, the Tiresias truth-sayer of this season, is grooming Gator to be the new Tiresias. If the episode title "The Useless Hand" refers to the Tennyson poem "Tiresias," then Munch breaks Gator's wrist to simulate that idea. Dante places Tiresias in the circle of hell with fortune tellers and false prophets, whose heads are turned backwards as punishment, so they can never have foresight again. And Gator wears his sunglasses on the back of his head. If I'm right about the gruesome accident in 5.4 being the woman's head getting twisted around like the Mayor of Halloweentown, then that's another reference to Tiresias. Tiresias also had the gift of augury, meaning that he could hear the future in the songs of birds, and Dot is compared to a bird. And certainly Gator being blindfolded fits with the story of the blind Tiresias. It's interesting that, in the 16th century flashback, the priest is filmed with his head centered against antlers on the wall, so he looks like a man turning into a stag. Could Bryn's transgression have been similar to Actaeon's? There will be a reproduction of a Velazquez painting used in season 5, in the scene with Lorraine at a restaurant, of Cardinal-Infante Ferdinand dressed as a hunter. Wikipedia notes that he is supposed to represent Actaeon in this painting. Nadine is an anagram of Dianne, a variation of Diana. If Gator and Nadine are connected by "hot water," that would explain at least half of Gator's comparison to Oedipus, and it would go a long way toward explaining all the bathroom/water references this season.

talanah: the case of the omitted hfw companion
soooo @meg-noel-art and I have finally connected the dots we haven't connected shit re: Talanah's conspicuously short and choppy quest line, along with her overall unsatisfying departure from the game (in lieu of joining the base team). We now hold with 99.9999% confidence that Talanah was fully intended to be included a member of the base, either with a different ending to her quest line, or a different quest line altogether.
As we all know, the early (earliest!!!) promo--the GG Instagram splash posted in tandem with the 2020 HFW Announcement trailer--featured her in exclusivity as a returning character. While this official promo art has since been retconned, it still appears on the inside of the steelbook case with the special preorder additions, as well as on a bunch of GG's official ad material (the Twitch stream header, for example). Her comic was also being released at the same time as all of these dealings, culminating in one final confirmatory line: Talanah's story will continue in Horizon Forbidden West.
Now. I won't get into how I do or do not view any of the returning characters' stories as...real or satisfying continuations in HFW. But it's pretty objective to say that Talanah's was decidedly Not. Without even diving once again into the characterization issues (of which there are plentymorethanseveral), both of her quests give us nothing more than a recap of the comic. Seriously, every dialogue wheel we get with her and with Amadis provides a summary of what happened in The Sunhawk. Nothing new learned, no growth made. Story Not Continued, Same Story Rehashed. It's conspicuously not what we were promised, and not what (IMO) GG knew the fans wanted. I think that's pretty clear, regardless of your view on anything related to her character.
So, what the hell happened? Why was this the product were were given?
Easy: it wasn't at all the product that was intended in early baseline development.
There's a pretty glaring complication re: Talanah's integration into HFW--Freya Parker (her hilarious and lovely VA, seriously go check her out) began shooting Jurassic World: Dominion in February/March 2020. And uhhh we all know what was going on right around then, lmao. So not only does this become a scheduling issue, but a quarantine issue as well. Actor travel during projects was likely a huge ordeal, and Freya's actual studio time was probably vastly limited. Combine these challenges with an already-bloated cast load, and...it becomes pretty obvious which character needed to have their role diminished by degrees. Freya can't get to the studio and dedicate much time--we don't get a Carja base member.
One can pick up hints of this around the base. How almost every character (even new bloods Zo and Kotallo) bring her up at length in the "Companions" speech option, even if they're never mocapped in the same room. The item left at the base, when no other non-members get that treatment. How every single thing about her quest's epilogue and beyond reads like a huge "sorry sorry sorry we're sorry" from the devs ("until next time," "I wish she could have stayed," etc.). It's a consolation for what they had intended--fuller tribal representation, balance among the new and old cast members, a true continuation of Talanah's story.
So what does this mean? Well, yeah, it means that I'm still disappointed and that it's still okay to be disappointed. But having a more rational explanation beyond "this was probably the plan the whole time :))))) she's really not THAT important after all just accept your dinner :)))) oh look the writers forgot about her :))))) i ordered you a new clown nose :)))))" makes me feel a whole lot more optimistic for her potentially having a bigger comeback role in HZ3. We must stay focused, brothers. Shoutout Freya Parker.

2023 Best Picture Nominees Ranked From Worst to Best
A late list from us at Reel, but a interesting night with some suprising winners meant plenty of time to reflect and discuss, eagerly anticipating the slate of films this year.
Whether or not you agree with the awards it’s safe to say that this year’s nominees for Best Picture were an eclectic group of films all bringing something different to the table. From franchise epics to dark comedies, from war films to music biopics, you cannot deny the quality on show. But, even though all the films were individualistic, some were better than others. Here is our ranking of the Best Picture Nominees from worst to best.
10. Avatar: Way of the Water
Tumblr media
Most of the naysayers of James Cameron’s epic Sci-Fi sequel have been silenced as the film became the 3rd highest grossing film of all time. Absolutely nothing can take away the huge financial success of Cameron’s 3-hour water adventure, but, for all the vast landscapes, exciting action and visual wonder it offers, the film still gets bogged down by what plagued it’s predecessor.
For all its otherworldly qualities the film’s biggest problem is in its humanity. The multitude of characters, and their stories, feel like mere splashes in the ocean Cameron has created for us. While the visuals deservedly won big on Oscar night, there really isn’t enough consistency in Avatar’s vast 3-hour runtime, making the journey feel like a slog more so than the thrill-ride everyone was promised.
9. Triangle of Sadness
Tumblr media
Ruben Ostlund’s third feature had early signs it may follow a similar trajectory to the one Parasite had 4 years ago. Winning the Palme D’Or and getting nominated for a number of other awards across the globe, it looked like Ostlund would be celebrating deep into award season for his film. However, with no wins at this year’s Academy Awards, Triangle of Sadness has faded into the darkness as far superior films took the spotlight. This may just be circumstantial but arguably it’s because, despite being captivating in parts, this is Ostlund’s weakest effort.
When compared to The Square and Force Majeure, both of which have an enigmatic quality to their stories, Triangle of Sadness regularly smacks you on the head with its themes. Even when Ostlund is showing us some of the finest direction of the year (particularly in the dinner scene on the boat), it still gets dragged out to the extreme – hitting home ideas that were already communicated 10 minutes before. Having said that, Ostlund remains one of the most interesting filmmakers working today and despite Triangle of Sadness feeling weaker than his other efforts, there are still moments of brilliance scattered throughout.
8. The Fabelmans
Tumblr media
The biggest takeaway from Spielberg’s reflective life story is that the Director has never lost his touch. Sure, some of his more recent ventures pale in comparison to Schindler’s List, Jurassic Park and Jaws, but his understanding of the medium and how audiences connect to it are the shining light in The Fabelmans. Scenes in which Sammy Fabelman watches his audience react to his films are wonderfully constructed, making it clear that the legendary director has never lost his love for cinema.
However, this film was always going to border on the self indulgent. If you compare this film to the reflective efforts of Cuarón’s Roma and Brannagh’s Belfast, The Fabelmans struggles to find a core reason to tell its story. Its backdrop dabbles with elements of depression, anti-semitism and bullying but never fully explores them and while Spielberg is telling the story with his heart on his sleeve, it still can’t find a genuine reason for the story it’s telling.
7. Top Gun: Maverick
Tumblr media
One of the year’s biggest surprises was the quality on show in David Kosinsky’s sequel to the cheesy 80’s classic. While it still adheres to its predecessors rules of topless sport and needless high-fiving the film’s technical aspects very often leave you in awe. The sound, visual effects and action set-pieces are wonderfully put together to create so much energy and tension – but the most surprising part of this sequel is the emotional attachments it holds to the first film.
Tom Cruise’s performance as Maverick is reflective and softer while never losing the rashness of the character, and the emotional beats between Maverick and Goose’s son (named “Rooster”) win you over every time. This could have so easily turned into just another sequel, but Kosinsky’s controlled direction and modern approach make for a mature follow up that surpasses the original with ease.
6. Elvis
Tumblr media
Over the past few years we’ve had a slew of mediocre music biopics, often boasting a great central performance but never understanding their subject, which makes it a delightful surprise to have a film like Elvis come along. Baz Luhrmann took the story of an icon and told it with the energy and glamour that make the Director so distinct. But, what’s even more impressive is how the film understands just how emphatic Elvis Presley was as an icon.
The film is by no means perfect, with Tom Hanks not quite hitting the mark as well as his co-stars, but this should be the definitive blueprint for music biopics to come. From his room-shaking begins to the darker days of his time in Vegas, Elvis tells us the story while never forgetting to inject the passion and personality that made Elvis Presley one of the most iconic performers of all time. Also, it’s impossible not to be impressed by Butler’s spellbinding performance.
5. Women Talking
Tumblr media
Sarah Polley’s chamber piece rightfully took home the Best Adapted Screenplay award for her talky adaptation of Miriam Toews novel. The script that Polley wrote is a beautiful balance between character, theme and discussion, lending personality and importance to create one of the most timely films of the year.
While Polley’s script is what shines the most it cannot be understated how important her direction is. Instead of being flashy and overbearing she opts for quiet and observational direction that allows her characters to shine with their own heartbreaking individuality. Like all great chamber pieces, Women Talking densely packs its small setting with so much – leaving you eternally affected by the film’s outcome.
4. All Quiet on the Western Front
Tumblr media
Edward Berger’s adaptation of Remarque’s novel takes a modern approach in its filmmaking to really hit home the timeless themes of the classic source material. Every battle scene is wonderfully constructed in order to capture the “War Is Hell” mantra of the film while never losing those individual struggles we see from the leading characters.
There are different threads that the film pulls on that don’t work quite as well as the core story, but these merely provide extra layers to a film that’s already packed densely with story. War films have to really do something special to stand out these days and Edward Berger has ensured that his film stands head and shoulders above a lot of films of a similar ilk.
3. Tár
Tumblr media
At times Todd Fields’ near 3-hour character piece can feel strenuous. The script never hides away from the world it’s set in, often allowing long stretches of dialogue about Classical music to play out in front of its sturdy camera, but the film succeeds because of its subtle character evolutions. You’d be quick to dismiss this film as a discussion on “cancel culture” or even the separation of Art vs. Artist, but really what it’s doing is building everything into its central character.
Smartly made and marketed like a biopic, the film takes a grounded approach of talking about people who are considered otherworldly. Every action, conversation and thought Lydia Tár experiences is slowly etching away her mythical persona as one of the greatest composers of all time – until it all implodes in glorious fashion. The film will likely be remembered for Blanchett’s wonderful performance, but there is a quiet complexity to Tár that stays with you for a long time.
2. Banshees of Inisherin
Tumblr media
Martin McDonagh’s newest film is arguably his finest work. In Bruges loyalists will always argue against that, but McDonagh’s signature style has never felt more fluid than in Banshees of Inisherin. Not only that, but the razor sharp humour wonderfully compliments the quiet melancholic tone – as well as the allegory for the Irish Civil War.
McDonagh surrounds himself with the familiar faces of Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson who, along with the addition of two wonderful performances from Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan, anchor this film’s themes perfectly. The chemistry seeping from every scene shared between the cast amplifies the humour but also gives the film a sense of community, reaffirming the bigger questions of death and legacy, as well as the impact we have on those around us.
1. Everything Everywhere All At Once
Tumblr media
Easily the most original and unpredictable film of the year – maybe even of the current decade – The Daniels’ bizarre vision of the multiverse is told with veteran control. You easily find yourself in awe of the film’s barbaric narrative, but what’s even more impressive is the it’s ability to find so much heart at the centre of its chaos.
Amongst the confetti action, hotdog fingers and hundreds of other elements The Daniels pack into their film there is a quietly controlled narrative between Mother and Daughter, exploring their lack of connection and the solace they find in that shared experience. It’s a narrative that is extremely hard to balance at the best times but doing it with so much craziness surrounding it – as well as challenging a suffering marriage as well – is why this film easily stands as the best film nominated for Best Picture. Everything Everywhere All At Once won big at the Oscars and for the first time ever there isn’t a soul out there that can argue against with the wins.

I offer the DC universe for the self insert making asks - @solitaireships
Tumblr media
combining them cuz yeah I made a Batman "villain"
Tumblr media
Villain name is Frill Lizard. Guy who can spit acid and remembered that scene from Jurassic Park and thinks frill lizards can spit acid for real. has costume frills around his neck that sit there like a neck pillow until they puff up like this. Mostly used for keeping acid splash back to a minimum. The more he uses his acid spit, the more the fumes actually make him lightheaded and delirious so most of the time he passes out before anyone can do anything. 100% a gag villain that no one takes seriously but "I spit acid and mostly on accident, I can't really hold a job with this"

Batfamily Action Style: Girls with Guns
While the likes of Captain Marvel and Wonder Woman are great for female empowerment and the fun spectacle of Harley Quinn and Black Widow are fun I have found myself disappointed with how the action is lackluster compared to their male counterparts. Even the more street level heros like Colleen Wing and Elektra have rather average fight scenes even though they are part of the supporting cast of the best Martial Artists in the MCU. While their fights are good they can be better. With the Batfamily finally coming to live action what can be improved?
So what source of media can the female members of the Batfamily be inspired by?
An old genre from the golden age of Hong Kong Action Cinema is the key to really capture what they can do. The Girls with Guns subgenre. Yes Madam is a 1985 martial arts film starring Karate Champion Cynthia Rothrock and current mega star Michelle Yeoh. It is considered the first movie of this kind and kicked off this type of story. Female action stars kicking ass and taking names just as well as any of the well known male actors.
If you want to see what a Cassandra Cain/Stephanie Brown scene would look like in a fight watch this movie.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
But these were not the only women defining this subgenre. Moon Lee, Cynthia Khan, Yukari Oshima and more were stars as well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sadly though by the 90s the subgenre died out along with the golden era of Hong Kong Cinema. A mixture of corruption due to the Triads being involved in the Hong Kong film industry, the rise of mainland Chinese movies, and the slow reunification of Hong Kong back into the Chinese government from British ownership were 3 major reasons this era died out. Combine this with the Hong Kong financial crisis due to the reunification, other competition from different Asian countries, and major American movies like Jurassic Park coming out led to the death Hong Kong 80s cinema. While luckily it recovered and made a resurgence through reimagining and artistic direction it was never the same again.
Essentially too many hands and factors controlling the industry.
The Girls with Guns subgenre sadly fell to obscurity in western audiences eyes. Never really making a splash in pop culture compared to other kung fu movies. However echos of their works can be felt since its fall in the mids 1990s. In Japan Anime was echoing the style of action. The best shows you may know is Black Lagoon and Ghost in the Shell .
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While there is no correlation with the subgenre effecting other action movies in other Asia countries they have grown similar waves a female lead martial arts action. In 2008 ,Thailand had a short lived action star of Jeeja Yanin from her internationally acclaimed movie Chocolate. In 2013 in Indonesia the Raid 2 had amazing action scenes for their mute villian Hammer Girl played by Julie Estelle. Vietnam in 2019 gained similar fame for their movie Furie. It even got its own prequel directed by the first movie's main star Veronica Ngo. Finally in South Korea, while it was having its Renaissance in its film industry along came the film The Villianess. While more action oriented it was so good that John Wick 3 had to steal a scene from it.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
With characters like Cassandra Cain, Lady Shiva , Black Canary and more street level heros possibly making an appearence in live action, Hollywood might as well pull out all the stops for these badass women. If they do,they might want to look outward for inspiration.

Saturday 4/6/22 - Media Recommendations #34
Tumblr media
These past few years have been an exciting time for paleo nerds. The revival of the Jurassic franchise has renewed the public's interest in dinosaurs, and new paleontological discoveries such as the revamping of Spinosaurus, and new understandings of behaviour, integument, and taxonomy are coming out every few months.
But there's this disconnect between what the general public thinks of dinosaurs, and what experts and enthusiasts (like myself) understand. Once upon a time, dinosaur nature documentaries were all the rage. Walking With Dinosaurs was a cultural cornerstone of the turn of the century, but it has been a while since any Dino Doco has had anywhere near the same success.
Tumblr media
Fast forward to 2022, and Apple TV presents a BBC series in the style of Planet Earth and Blue Planet, but with dinosaurs, called Prehistoric Planet. And I loved it.
Prehistoric Planet
BBC / Jon Favreau / Mike Gunton
Tumblr media
The Pitch
Prehistoric Planet is a 5-part nature documentary, each episode about 45 minutes long. Unlike Walking With Dinosaurs, which explored habitats and species across the Mesozoic period, Prehistoric Planet focuses in on the end of the Cretaceous, around 66 million years ago.
Tumblr media
Each episode explores biodiversity in a specific type of habitat;
Coasts
Deserts
Freshwater
Ice World
Forests
Rather than follow a group of animals in one specific locale, each episode will jump around different locations around the world that match the episode's theme. Episode 2 for example gives an insight into deserts in South America, North Africa, and East Asia. This formula allows the documentary team to discuss various species from all across the world.
Tumblr media
There's fantastic variety in the species chosen to focus in each episode. With the dinosaurs, of course they have to discuss mainstream fan favourites like Tyrannosaurus, Triceratops, and Velociraptor. But they also discuss species not as well known to the public like Nanuqsaurus, Antarctopelta, and even dinosaurs I hadn't heard of until now, like Zalmoxes.
Tumblr media
Something I have seen discussed as somewhat unique to this series, is the spotlight on non-dinosaur animals from this period. Plesiosaurs, frogs, primitive birds, Mosasaurs, Ammonites, and most of all, Pterosaurs. Pterosaurs get a great amount of focus in multiple episodes, and from a variety of groups within Pterosauria; aerial expert Nyctosaurs, impressively decorated Pteranodontids, and the gigantic stalking Azdarchids.
Tumblr media
And I can't believe I haven't mentioned it yet, but the documentary is narrated by Sir David Attenborough, and that just ties together the whole package.
My Thoughts
As a fan of anything with David Attenborough, this was an immediate sell for me. The tenderness and wonder in David's voice as he details the mundane and exciting of these extinct animals holds your attention firmly.
The special effects used to create the illusion of these animals interacting with their world is stunning; water splashes and flows as animals move through it, snow and sand shifts against them, leaves are brushed aside. It's expertly done.
Tumblr media
Every behaviour and design aspect of the dinosaurs, pterosaurs, and the animals they live with is called against direct fossil evidence and further inferred from behaviour and physiology in living animals. Even the most speculative aspects of their design have roots in actual zoology.
Each of the 45 minute episodes are accompanied with a 5 minute behind-the-scenes clip, where palaeontologists who were consulted for the project explain how all decisions made were steeped deeply in real science. These were once living things on this planet, and the way they are depicted, and described by David Attenborough, illustrates this fact.
Tumblr media
That last part is probably my favourite aspect of this documentary series, that the dinosaurs and other creatures are treated like animals. They were not blood thirsty monsters that would stop at nothing short of absolute bloodshed. They had families, they would back off if there was too much danger, they were curious about their environment.
It's a shame that dinosaurs have become little more than movie monsters in the eye of today's public, because as Prehistoric Planet shows us, dinosaurs, pterosaurs, and all extinct animals were living things, and they were extraordinary.

what was your inspiration behind monotora?
Since Rexx was the one to create Monotora, I've asked him to answer this question (everything below is what she's written):
When it came to replacing Monokuma for DR96 it took a lot of thought and planning on how we could have a character that can stand out to be a threat rather than something that's passive aggressive like Monokuma himself. Throughout the months of production they went through so many design ideas it was tough to find one where it wasn't too complex or it didn't fit in with the setting DR96 was taking place.
First one was done in around the end of September 2021, and originally they were going to be blue/dark grey - but I did not want to get any comparisons to Sans so I immediately changed them to a very desaturated orange/dark grey with blue eyes. It didn't really last long though since their colours felt like they weren't really popping out enough and were bland. I also went overboard with their markings so they needed to be simplified. (I would've shown what they'd be if they were blue but unfortunately it's been lost </3)
Tumblr media
Second concept was a little after in around early October 2021 for a reference sheet, they were still going to be bipedal and had a lot more scars on their body (except those were done as a deliberate design choice rather than something you'll receive in a fight.) They were more scruffy with an ear notch included and had an overbite, but this didn't really last long until I did another concept design for them. Around this period I struggled a lot when it came to designing them without stepping into the complex design boundaries.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Third concept was originally going to be used for their splash art but I wasn't really fond of that pose and the yellow scars were so icky to me so then they were edited to be more fleshy coloured (as in a shade of red you'd get from freshly opened wounds) which leads to their splash art we used to reveal Monotora to the discord server during the announcement (which was drawn in November 2021 time) I was going through the period of learning to draw a lot of sharp teeth so the anatomy looked really rough.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A lot of these are really old and outdated but the most up to date version is what they currently look up to chapter 3, they have a more animalistic look and they're no longer bipedal. Generally they're really fun to draw and goof around with and it's been fun using them for DR96 :)
Tumblr media
I do have a list of characters/creatures that are main inspirations to fleshing out Monotora's personality and traits here:
Monokuma + Monokid; these two were mainly a guideline to starting off with designing a mascot for the killing game.
Doraemon; at the very beginning his design was Monotora's main inspiration but overtime things would've been changed or scrapped, however a few traits are still there such as Monotora being able to hid things in their stomach like how Doraemon can hide things in his little pocket on his stomach.
Nightmare Fredbear + Montgomery (FNAF); these two characters helped flesh out that 'threatening robot' kind of thing (Fredbears off-putting dialogue in UCN and Montgomery's temperament and determination to hunt you down in SB). A fun fact is that Monty's voice is my personal HC voice for Monotora lol
The indoraptor (Jurassic World); a pretty obvious thing from the indoraptor is it being built to be used as a weapon, Monotora has the capability of killing just like the indoraptor (only differences is that Monotora doesn't have the laser targeting system and they're smaller than the indoraptor). But generally Monotora gets their animalistic behaviour from this dinosaur. I've also seen a few people mention how Monotora looks similar to Mapleshade from Warrior Cats but she was never ever used for inspiration (which is surprising considering I have the books) LMAOOOO

𝗠𝘆 𝗕𝗶𝗴 𝗙𝗮𝘁 𝗝𝘂𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗪𝗲𝗱𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴⭐(Friday's Tale)
Krystal fancied herself the darling of Britain, a sentiment she had harbored since her initial foray into the cutthroat world of kindergarten fashion, bedecked in flashy pink attire and a brazen tee proclaiming, "Bubblegum Bitch, Unleash the Glitch." When her teacher, rang her mum, advocating for the banishment of the garish garment, the nicotine-fueled matriarch snapped back, "Oi, she's my spawn, and I'll school her my way, not your highfalutin' rubbish! Keep your posh rules to yourself, Bitch!" She punctuated her sentiment with a punch that left the teacher out cold, convalescing in a hospital bed for a generous three weeks.
That ruckus taught Krystal a basic truth: cozy up to an aggressive "mate," and the world bows to your whims. At the tender age of ten, she embraced her inaugural boyfriend, a sickly 16-year-old brute with a mug only a mother could tolerate. Krystal endured his amphibian countenance for the perks; the lad happily stabbed anyone spouting words she found irksome. Through adolescence, she paraded through 25 boyfriends, each a notch more menacing than the previous. She started with a head-smashing hooligan, ending up hitched to a hulking black dude with a rap sheet for unprovoked attacks with machetes on the police.
But none measured up. At 23, she pivoted from boyfriends to husbands. A debt collector, famed for playground pummelings, led the charge. Then, a cutthroat tycoon who found joy in exploiting folks and laying a savage beating on those who sought compassion. Finally, she hitched her wagon to a Russian mobster, the notorious "Nikolai the Beheader." Yet, contentment remained elusive.
In an act of desperation, Krystal turned to an American cloning facility, splashing a considerable sum on a T-Rex, straight out of Jurassic Park. In a world where folks tied the knot with inanimate objects and critters (like the lady with the Eiffel Tower or the chap hitched to a Barbie doll), a T-Rex husband didn't seem too outlandish. So, on a desert island reserved for this peculiar project, she choreographed the entire affair: rings, priest, witnesses, and her tearful mother.
Alas, marrying a 4-meter-tall, 12-meter-long Cretaceous beast with a bottomless hunger proved less than practical. The situation nosedived when the T-Rex decided the wedding feast included the entire guest list, beginning with a terrorized priest.
The moral of the tale, ladies and gents: Steer clear of matrimonial ties with a bloody T-Rex!
