So I just wanted to share something I’ve been thinking about and I really like your Todoroki analysis so you seemed like a god person to ask this.

But I thought that when I first saw the scenes where they show endeavour’s fathers death it was mentioned that he burned to death, possibly by the loss of control of his own quirk. Though I can’t remember if this was an assumption or part of canon.

But I always thought it would be interesting psychologically if his father had died because of his own flames trying to protect a little girl and that enji saw this as a teen. And how this impacted his drive to become powerful and to have a child that has resistant to burns/overheating. As well as how it impacted his behaviour when touya, who he was currently grooming to be a hero, was being burned by his own flames (like how enji saw his dad die).

Sorry I don’t think this is overly coherent.

Now, in regard to Enji's father's death this is the scene...

The translation is faithful enough.

'Teki ga nani datte no ka o' 敵が何だってのかを "What the enemy was?"

'Akkan kara shōjo o sukuou to shi kekka shōjo moro tomo nikukai to-ka shita chichi o' 悪漢から少女を救おうとし結果少女もろとも肉塊と化した父を "Your father tried to save a girl from a scroundel and, as a result, ended up turning the girl and himself into a lump of meat." [Chap 356]

Noteworthy in the sentence they call the one against which Enji's father supposedly fought a "scroundel" (悪漢 'akkan') and not a Villain, which in BNHA is written with the kanji for "Enemy" (敵 'teki') but given the reading 'Villain' (ヴィラン) so it could even be this guy wasn't even what BNHA label as Villain (people who use their Quirks to commit crimes, cause destruction, and potentially put innocent lives at stake) or that the whole Villain thing didn't exist yet, in the sense they were just considered criminals.

There's no mention of which was the direct cause of Enji's father's death, if he burned himself to death, if they ended up being tossed of a building or whatever. We can speculate Enji's father might have had a fire Quirk since usually kids inherit their Quirks from their parents... though it's not a given Enji inherited his own by his father, it could have been his mother who had a fire Quirk.

From the little we see of Enji's father's corpse he doesn't seem burnt...

...he seems wounded.

and him being burnt by his own Quirk seems unlikely... it happens to Touya solely because he got a bad mix of Quirks which made his body unsuitable for his own Quirk... and if it was a problem his father had too, probably Enji would have thought twice before risking to make it worse by marrying a woman with an ice Quirk.

The text uses 'kekka' (結果 "result", "consequence"), which seems to imply the death of Enji's father and the girl was a consequence of Enji trying to save the girl.

If I were to make a speculation considering how devasted the area is...

...and assuming Enji's father also had a fire Quirk I would say it's possible he accidentally caused the place to explode.

In fact if he tried to use his fire Quirk while there was a gas leak, this might have caused the whole place to explode, without even the scroundel having to do anything beyond threatening the girl. As the scroundel didn't use his Quirk, he didn't end up labelled as a Villain, hence he remains just a scroundel.

As the explosion might have been terrible, it would explain the devastation around them and why Enji's father and the girl turned into "lumps of meat" (肉塊 'nikukai').

Alternatively the criminal might have had explosive, he took the girl as hostage, Enji's father tried to save her and messed up because he wasn't strong/good enough and ended up dying.

It would fit with how Touya tried to turn himself into a human atomic bomb, so it's a call back to Enji's past.

It would fit with how Enji is obsessed with being the strongest because otherwise one ends up as dead as his father and, with him, the ones he was trying to save, but there could also be more.

We're never told Enji's father was a Hero so he might not have been one and... remember what's the origin story of Gentle Criminal/Danjuro Tobita?

Because he wasn't a Hero and tried to save a man and failed he got charged with obstructing public duty (it's worth to remember Midoriya too got scolded when he tried to save Bakugo and, later on, Enji helped cover up how he, Shouto and Ida fought against Stain to save Native so as not to get them in troubles). The school expelled Danjuro, society labelled him as scum, his own family rejected him.

Now let's assume Enji's father was also a well meaning person who tried to save a girl without being a Hero and ended up failing. He dies so they can't charge him, but society will still lay the blame on him.

Enji grows up with this additional weight, with this need to erase the stain mark his father left on his family, he has to become a Hero, he has to be the best of them all.

And this yes, might affects how he reacts to Touya burning himself since he doesn't want Touya to die like his father, only the strongest survives.

Some more speculations just for the sake of it.

I don't know if the author of "Vigilantes" was told something by Horikoshi about Endeavor, but if Enji's father wasn't a Hero and yet died in attempt to save a girl along with the girl and got blamed for it, this might explain why Enji reacts so negatively to Vigilantes. He tried to distance himself from his father's actions.

Timeline wise, Enji's father might have also died around the time All might appeared.

All Might is around 10 years older than Enji, and came back in Japan at 23 from the States. Enji isn't wearing U.A. school uniform yet so he's still a middle school student... so this makes possible for him to resent All Might also because he didn't save his father.

You might add further drama and say the disaster in which Enji's father and the girl died is the same disaster during which All Might made his dubut

...but honestly the disaster in which All Might made his debut seems bigger and I think this would be stretching things too much even if it's a fun speculation because it would make All Might come to be known due to that same incident that took Enji's father's life and caused his family shame.

But again, I think I'm pushing for it and this is absolutely not what Horikoshi planned.

Sure is though, with such a little line about Enji's father and nothing more, everyone can speculate and try to guess whatever killed him so it's fair even to assume it were his own flames who did cause his death (which yes, in a way, it's what I assumed as well, only I saw the flames not as the direct cause but as the triggering factor).

Long story short... your guess on how Enji's father died is as good as mine. It can be that he burned himself to death due to misuse/loss of control of his Quirk. We can't really know.

What we know is that you're surely right into saying that seeing his father's death impacted on Enji's psychologically and caused his drive for power as this is labelled as HIS ORIGIN.

Enji's father's death is what gives life to Endeavor. And whatever were the causes of it and the consequences, the trauma of losing his father in such way, likely left a scarring. We can only wait and see if Horikoshi will decide to develop it or not. For now the little he tossed in was definitely too little.

Please don't worry about me thinking you were trying to downplay or excuse Enji's actions.

I also think that it's interesting to know/figure out WHY characters in stories do something bad... but I don't think having a psychological reason for doing something bad works as a free pass for whatever terrible thing one did.

Enji likely had his own mental scarring and traumas to cope with, and it's interesting to try to figure them out and understand him, this didn't mean he could take them out on his own family as they didn't exist as his own personal punching bag.

So yeah, we are in the same boat.

This was the first song I heard by Yura Hatsuki, and it instantly made me a fan, so it seemed fitting that I should translate it first!

This is a song about the vengeful women in fairy tales when they get their way. Is the heroine in one story the villain in the next?

I take this as “The prince (who is destined to fall in love with the queen) won’t come” but who is the queen? Is this like Snow White where the queen is vengeful towards the girl and later turning into a witch? Or is this that girl, forever destined to be alone, even as a queen?

All about Hikaru’s Otaku Activities Vol.1

In this column Kalafina’s Hikaru talks about all the things she likes in a geeky fashion and with lots of passion. The first edition contains a self-introduction and Hikaru explains the reasons for her “Otaku Activities”

To all newcomers and everyone who knows me from the past, my first column has finally been published, I would really like you to read it casually without any pressure! Waahh….even while I am saying this I will have to admit that I am the one who feels most pressured at the moment *laughs* After all, it’s the first time in my entire life that I am writing a column…! When I first heard I would get to do this column, I was told, “we want you to make this a place where you can talk casually about the things you love, no formalities or anything.” I accepted the offer without hesitation so now I would like to try my very best to share the things I love. Please don’t be too hard on me!

Since this is the very first feature I think a self-introduction is in order. I am a singer and this year I have celebrated my 10th Anniversary as part of a vocal unit called Kalafina. I passed an audition to sing the theme songs for all seven movies of the theatrical version of “Kara no Kyoukai”. After that we got to sing many more theme songs for various anime works as well as for the NHK TV program “Rekishi Hiwa Historia”. Up until now I got to sing so many different songs, I got to meet many great people, our encounter with SPICE was also very exciting. They wrote amazing live reports for us, they followed us backstage and got to experience a side of us which we had never shown before, we got the chance to take part in “Songful Days”, an event sponsored by SPICE. With that kind of warm and comfortable relationship I feel like I can freely write this column.

Since all of my readers might end up being confused about certain things in the future I think it’s best to also share some private information about myself… *laughs*

I was born on July 2nd 1987 in Toyama Prefecture, back in 2009 I moved to Tokyo together with my family in order to pursue my activities as part of Kalafina. In my life I am supported by my hard working mother and my younger sister who shares my hobbies. My hobbies are reading, watching TV and films, doing puzzles and sleeping. I am an indoor person all the way.

The first manga I ever owned was a monthly shōjo manga magazine (hereinafter referred to as monthly magazine) called “Nakayoshi”. Then I also got the monthly magazine “RIBON”, during my earlier years of primary school I also got to read the monthly magazine “Ciao” at my friend’s house. Then from my higher grades of primary school onwards I started to buy separate volumes and these days nothing gives me more happiness than to feel the weight of a paperbag filled with dozens of new manga volumes.

The first animes I really liked in my childhood days were “My Neighbor Totoro” – I had completely worn out my video tape – and an English learning show by Disney called “Minnie Mouse is singing the ABC song for us ♪” I have been a big fan of anime ever since the old days but my love became stronger ever since I moved to Toyko and these days I tend to watch around 40 works every season.

The first gaming console I ever used was the “Super Nintendo”. I also played games on the Play Station, Gameboy and the Nintendo DS, I currently have more than 10 gaming apps on my mobile phone. In recent years I have also been going to a lot of collab cafés and stage plays of my favourite works.

I only just started to write and already it’s all about my otaku activities *laughs*. On that note I would like to mention that when it comes to books I am not just a fan of manga but of all kinds of literature such as short novels. When it comes to TV and films I am not just into anime, I also like variety shows, love stories, action, suspense and lots of western tv shows (mostly procedural crime dramas).

In the past I have often been asked, “among all those things, why is it that you feel the strongest emotional impact when it comes to manga and anime?” In short my reply is always, “it is my way of escaping from reality so I am able to actually face reality.”

Manga, anime, games, for me they provide a fantasy world filled with ideals and dreams. Step by step they will take you to another world. In there you will find brightly sparkling elements, a warm and fluffy sense of healing, before you know it you will have tears running down your cheeks and once in a while you will feel great emotional pain deep within your heart *bitter smile*.

This way I have been able to experience many different things. I am living quite the ordinary life so I get to experience things the real me wouldn’t do…for example, there’s a world where I am actually doing sports! Since it is all a fantasy I can use magic and psychic powers, it is possible to talk with all kinds of animals. In these works there are worlds where you can see sceneries which you could have never imagined in the real world.

Also, the characters living in these worlds carry so many ideals and dreams, their words and actions are powerful and provide hope, they give me the strength to face the struggles of the real world. By experiencing a wonderful piece of work you can get inspired and find the strength to face all your challenges. They help me revalidate the things I want to do, what needs to be done in order to achieve those things, they give me the motivation to reach my goals. Through these works I want to experience the best as well as the worst things. I feel like this is the most important thing. In this column I would like to talk about the things that are important to me.

This is a bit sudden but did you know that during this anime season you can enjoy a lot of nostalgic works on TV? “Lupin the Third Part 5“, “Legend of the Galactic Heroes - Die Neue These “, “GeGeGe no Kitarō Vol.6”, “Captain Tsubasa”, “Card Captor Sakura Clear Card Arc”, “Soul Hunter” and many more.

When you watch them you can fully experience the charms of these works which so many people have been enamored with in the past. To feel the warmth and excitement from the early days again, it is great. That feeling of being fully immersed also seems to come back. I wonder if the power and beauty of these works will touch my heart again. While once again experiencing the sparkle of these works which I had enjoyed back in the day, I feel like I am falling in love with them all over again. Also, I feel like many people are getting to know these nostalgic works for the very first time, there seems to be a growing interest in works from the past.

As a big CLAMP lover I have been watching “Card Captor Sakura Clear Card Arc” ever since the last season when it first started to air, simultaneously I have been reading the manga. “Card Captor Sakura” is a story about a girl that comes across magical cards and receives magical powers. The main character Sakura Kinomoto-chan (hereinafter referred to as Sakura-chan) encounters magical cards during her fourth grade of primary school. All in all there are 53 cards such as “water”, “fire”, “wind”, “thunder”, “ground”, “light” and “darkness”. Sakura-chan struggles to bring them to life and consequently control them. She is a very cute, kind-hearted and courageous girl! She has to face various difficulties. Through her words and actions I feel incredibly empowered. I don’t even know how many times I have been comforted by her encouraging words, “it’s gonna be absolutely fine!”

And then there are all these inspiring quotes by Sakura-chan’s best friend Tomoyo Daidouji (hereinafter referred to as Tomoyo-chan). “Seeing a beloved person being happy gives me utmost happiness”, “Whatever good thoughts may be hidden within your heart, if you don't put them into words, none of it will ever be acknowledged by others.” These are the quotes I always keep in mind during important times. Tomoyo-chan may have a gentle nature but she is a very though girl with a strong will. She is my favourite character!

This is the story of Sakura-chan & Co. Time has passed and they are all junior high school students now. The cards which need to be collected have turned transparent, many new things are happening. There are new cards. Lots of mysterious characters. I will continue to loyally watch Sakura-chan’s adventures!

(株式会社アニマックスブロードキャスト・ジャパン Kabushiki-gaisha Animakkusu Burōdokyasuto Japan) disiarkan pertama kali di Jepang pada 1 Juni 1998 pada televisi satelit SKY PerecTV. Salah satu pendirinya adalah Yoshirō Kataoka, seorang prduser dan desainer anime yang terkenal.

Animax juga melakukan kerja sama dengan salah satu pemrakarsa anime, Osamu Tezuka, Studio Pierrot, Nippon Animation, dan lainnya. Animax telah berjasa dalam produksi beberapa serial anime seperti Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Ultra Maniac, Astro Boy, Hungry Heart: Wild Striker, Aishiteruze Baby, Shakugan no SHANA, dan lainnya.

Selebriti Jepang tekenal juga pernah tampil di Animax termasuk aktris Natsuki Kato dan seiyū Yukari Tamura. Animax juga mengadakan beberapa acara bertemakan anime dan konser seperti sebuah konser tahunan yang selalu diadakan di ZEPP Tokyo dan Animax Taishō (アニマックス大賞), sebuah kompetisi penulisan naskah anime tahunan yang diadakan sejak 2002.

Animax ditayangkan berbeda di Asia, terutama pada bahasa. Pertama kali Animax diluncurkan di Taiwan pada 1 Januari 2004 dan Hong Kong pada 12 Januari 2004. Seminggu kemudian di Asia Tenggara 19 Januari 2004. Di Asia Tenggara, Animax disiarkan dalam bahasa Jepang dengan teks bahasa Inggris atau dalam bahasa lokal.

Pada 5 Juli 2004, Animax memulai pekerjaannya di Asia Selatan. 29 April 2006, Animax diluncurkan dari Korea dan 31 Agustus pada tahun yang sama di Malaysia. Di Indonesia, Animax dihadirkan melalui jaringan televisi berlangganan First Media, MNC Vision, Transvision, Big TV, Centrin TV dan UseeTV.
