What if Everyone Had a Normal Job and Just Played D&D Together on the Weekends AU
Hera is the panicked DM
Kepler (Aasimar Oath of Conquest Paladin) and Jacobi (Halfling Artillerist Artificer) are having a macho pissing contest
Maxwell (Elven School of Enchantment Wizard) and Lovelace (Tiefling Mastermind Rogue) are actually strategizing and putting a plan together
Hilbert (Lizardfolk Knowledge Domain Cleric) and Eiffel (College of Eloquence Bard) are having a rules debate that will be absolutely meaningless in 2 turns
and Minkowski (Dwarven Battlemaster Fighter) is not so patiently waiting for her turn

What is the purposeful abduction au?!
Glad you asked!
It's essentially the Accidental Abduction AU but with Ford and also Ford gets abducted...on purpose!
While he's studying weirdness in Gravity Falls, Ford gets attacked by some sort of very dangerous weirdness. And he can't get away or defeat it. The creature bears down upon him and Ford closes his eyes, ready for the end.
But the end never comes. Ford opens his eyes and finds he's on a spaceship, with two rather nervous looking aliens in front of him: Lute and Angie. They explain that they were visiting their brother on Earth and saw Ford about to get killed, so they beamed him onto the ship to save him. But they'll send him right back, they swear, don't worry!
However, Ford, being the little freak that he is, says wait no he doesn't WANT to be sent back to Earth. He wants to stay on this spaceship and learn about aliens. Aliens are real! He needs to know more!
Angie and Lute, worried Ford will blab about aliens if they send him back (and not realizing that he'd immediately be discounted by everyone on the planet if he did so), reluctantly allow Ford to stay on the ship. They're supposed to study another sentient species for a school (college, specifically) project anyways.
The wariness they feel towards this very excitable and eager human gradually fades into friendship as Angie and Lute find common ground with Ford. Things progress, and eventually, Ford becomes a permanent resident of Kepler-62f. He's happily surprised to discover that his college buddy Fiddleford was an alien all along, and Fiddleford moves back to Kepler-62f and the two of them become a romantic couple.
Ford's fascinated with all the different kinds of aliens and wants to study them, which turns into him becoming a doctor specializing in "exotic sentients" (aka any sentient not the type of alien that the McGuckets are). He's very happy in his role, he feels needed and appreciated and gets to live a life he couldn't have ever imagined.
And then, one day at work, he gets a page. A poached human was found on the street poisoned, so his expertise is needed to save the poor thing's life. He goes to the room, only to discover that the human that had been abducted by poachers is none other than his estranged twin: Stan.

New intro with WIPs
Hello everyone and nice to meet you!
I decided to do a new introduction including my WIPs, since it was about time. I am Janec, 31, she/her, plant biotechnologist, climate change anxious.
If you have questions about plants for your WIPs, including GMOs, bio-techniques, plant physiology feel free to ask :) I love carnivorous plants, so if you have them in your work bonus points!
I’m an extremely emphatic person, which means it’s easy (most of the time) for me to understand other people and their feelings, so I’m always open to help, listen and encourage others, I just need to be away from emotional vampires and drama queens O.O but I love them as well :)
I read everything except extreme violence and gore, and I am happy to read your WIPs, so don’t be shy about them! I am open for ask and tag games! I am already behind, but I will do them all ^^'
More under the cut
About my writing:
I dealt with emotions and feelings from other people all my life, so I also deal with them in my WIPs, since this is what I know best ;)
I mostly write novels for teenagers, romance and occasionally erotica.
Most common tropes: family, friends, found love, self discovery, female condition and healing from trauma or past events.
I hate toxic relationships portrayed as romantic, so you won’t find them here.
I grew up in a small christian village, so there was not so much variety of people there, which is also reflected in my early works, now that I am out of there I found out how colorful and various is the world!
So I’m trying to put a diverse cast in my work (yes, even monsters), even if I’m always afraid of hurting someone from such communities (So please, help me understand and correct my mistakes!)
I have tons of WIPs, but I will focus on two for now, I am horrible with summaries so they might sounds boring XD
My WIPs:
Echoes in Cosmos
It’s a sci-fi romance from enemies - to therapy - to friends- to lovers. It’s set in a post-apocalyptic, post-climate change and post-nuclear war scenario.
The protagonists are Robin a cold mechanical engineer from Kepler and Corinna a earthling with special powers and a boring life. Their story is complicated and a bit twisted, especially because they both have unsolved issued with their family, their society or themselves and Robin is sent to Earth to fight, capture and study Corinna. (Great start!)
Main themes: a bit of world-building, trauma and healing, second chances, found love and few +18 scenes that I will not post here.
First chapter here on AO3
The boarding student (title may change, since I don't like it)
It’s a super slow burn romance set up in a regency french setting. William is a 17 years old marquise, by education he knows what is a gentleman and how he should behave. What he doesn’t know is that people are more variegated than he thinks and less inclined to be put into boxes, so when he’s forced to enrolled in the College of Holy Abbots, he’s in for a big change in his life. A change that Julien is more than happy to provide.
Main themes: friendship, family, love, inclusion, broken stereotypes and teenage vibes. (I am currently translating it in english for a friend)
I will eventually post some snippets from other WIPs if I feel like it ;)
This is something I'm really proud of ^^
Or you can ask something from my WIP folder here!

Recap: Strangetown Round 5 (Summer) - part 2
Tumblr media
Next up: the Grunt house! Buzz’s girlfriend, Mary-Sue, recently moved in along with her dog, Roux. Buzz’s own dog, Rebel, is a similar breed. Tank moved back here after college, too!
Tumblr media
Buck home for the summer right now, but will be off to college soon.
Tumblr media
He still feels a little upset about his break up with Delta Land, even though it was a while ago the wound still feels fresh for him… he likes his new girlfriend Beatrice Monty a lot too, probably more than he ever actually liked Delta, but… feelings can be complicated.
Tumblr media
Beatrice comes over, bring Ripp Grunt along with her!
Tumblr media
Ripp ends up catching up with Tank, who just got promoted to State Assemblyperson.
Tumblr media
...While Buck and Beatrice enjoy some privacy.
Tumblr media
Mary-Sue has her usual poor luck at work, losing $4000 dollars in investmets, but Buzz more than makes up for it when he brings home $55,000 as a reward for his action-movie-like heroism!
The Grunts are pretty rich these days! Buzz has more than enough money to help Tank with purchasing his own place, once the boy is ready. He hopes Tank finds a nice girl to settle down with, but he’s not holding his breath.
Tumblr media
Tank’s had a persistant want to fall in love with Virginia Beech, so invites her out swimming. After seeing his old flame Stella tying the knot, he was starting to think settling down sounded nice. He just needed to find the right girl! Someone loyal, supportive, down to earth, and a good listener. Maybe that could be Virginia? He’d always liked Ginny, but they’d only started spending time together more often recently.
Tumblr media
On Virginia’s part, she was slightly regretting going steady with Joshua. Tank was so hot, sooooo her type. And he’d asked her out! Maybe she ought to have been keeping her options open…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Buzz and Buck attempt a bit of father-son bonding.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mary-Sue finally falls in love with Buzz, and declares it.
Tumblr media
The family have one last breakfast together, before it’s time for Buck to head away to college.
Tumblr media
He moves to SSU's Landgraab House Dorms, where he's joined by college-aged Chastity Gere & Gabriel Green.
The Grunts are followed by the Curious household - which consists of throuple Lazlo, Erin & Penny and their many children. Pascal and Tycho may have moved out recently, but things at the observatory are as chaotic as ever!
Tumblr media
Penny and Lazlo get right to work on brining more chaos to an already-full house.
Tumblr media
Erin decides it's time for Bear Beaker to meet his bio-daddy, Darren Dreamer.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Darren’s not happy about having been kept in the dark until now, and he’s not impressed with Erin’s excuses that they were just “super busy”, but, nonetheless, he has another son now. And he’s keen to be more involved in Bear’s life! He’ll have to talk to Brandi about this, though…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cosmo Curious (Erin & Lazlo) and Street Weiss (Penny & Rhett Hart) both have birthdays!
Tumblr media
At the party, Tycho is immediately enamoured with Street's half-sister, Mimi.
Tumblr media
Penny has the nerve to give birth to twins, Kepler & Lovelace. (I was fuming about the twins! The family is constantly sleep deprived as it is and I had just finished renovating the nursury to accomodate 3 babies/toddlers, lmao.)
Tumblr media
The new nursury is pretty adorable, though.
Tumblr media
Bear grows up, too...
Tumblr media
And that's it! I had to cut a lot of stuff out of their recap just to keep it reasonable, haha. So many babies and birthdays!

candlenights at the lodge
this is my gift for @rindomness from the blinkshark discord candlenights exchange, an amnesty fic and i'm posting it here too! 1.7k words
Madeline Cobb was not one for holidays, except when it came to Candlenights. Being a sylph in Kepler could be lonely anyways, but even more so around the holidays, a time meant to be spent with family and loved ones. She felt that she owed the residents of the lodge a celebration as warm and joyful as everyone else got. Putting it together every year was an expression of her care for them, and this year, with the new Pine Guard team, the Amnesty Lodge family had expanded for the biggest Candlenights yet. She wondered how they and the other people that she had considered friends for longer were doing as the evening approached.
Aubrey Little had been dreading the holidays before she settled in Kepler. They always came around eventually, and she wasn't looking forward to spending that time alone. Yes, she had chosen to leave her parents, but nobody planned on her mom dying, and even the most determined and independent woman like Aubrey needed other people sometimes. It was a good thing Mama had been in the hotel lobby for her show gone wrong that night and she had wound up in Kepler from there. It took some adjustment to the small-town environment, but Aubrey loved living in Amnesty Lodge. There was no way to compare it to any other living situation, but if she had to try, it was the best parts of a college dorm, a hotel, a cabin, and a ski lodge all in one. A crackling fire helped warm the lounge area with its piano and cozy old couch across from the bartop. That was what Aubrey liked best about it, the coziness. Her childhood house was far too big for just her and her parents, all its elegance cold and uninviting. It never felt like a home. Of course, there were worse problems to have then living in a mansion, but as an only child, things could be difficult sometimes. At Amnesty Lodge, Aubrey felt like she could really be herself and have space to grow. Nobody (like her dad) was asking "What are you going to do for a living?" and "No, what are you really going to do? It can't just be magic." It was okay now though, here she was, about to celebrate Candlenights with her chosen family and the best friends she'd ever had. With one last glance in the mirror at her outfit (a fair attempt at being festive from a closet that was primarily black, red, denim, and leather), and headed out to the lobby.
Things had sure been different around here lately, but that wasn't a bad thing. Barclay and Mama had been all of the Pine Guard for so long that he had a little extra time on his hands now. It still wasn't much, since abominations continued to appear and he had to play damage control with that damn FBI agent, but he had been able to cook for fun again. His list of new recipes to try was finally getting some use after gathering dust for months. Barclay was surprised that the three new members of the Pine Guard worked together as well as they did when he first saw them. They all brought talents and all had things to work on, but by and large, things seemed okay. Even though he had been upset at Ned initially for causing Agent Stern to come to town, the two of them actually got along the best now. One night, while Barclay was cleaning up from dinner, he'd brought by a six pack as an apology. They sat and talked long after the cleaning was finished, finding that they could each relate to each other as outcasts in their own way. That was the lodge, that was their Candlenights celebration. All the outcasts coming together in a place they made to be welcomed, where they could let their guard down for a bit. Barclay smiled to himself as he took another tray of gingersnaps out of the oven. The kitchen would be the world's biggest pain in the ass to deal with later, but that didn't even cross his mind now as he was filled with Candlenights cheer.
Dani was already sitting in the lobby, snug in a Fair Isle sweater and old pair of jeans, absentmindedly petting Dr. Harris Bonkers. Being early was a good way to get samples from Barclay (if he wasn't too busy rushing to finish everything), but that wasn't her intention. She wanted to keep an eye on the rabbit like usual and had gotten lost in thought. It was hard to be in the Candlenights mood when her family was a world away. Being here brought difficult days for all the sylphs, but it seemed like a lot of the others had managed to adjust and fit in better than her. Jake loved to go snowboarding and made friends with Hollis, Barclay had a lot on his plate (no pun intended), and even Moira, who barely left the lodge, occupied her time with the piano. Dani liked to to write poetry and go for hikes if she had the energy to leave the lodge, let alone get out of bed. Aubrey's arrival changed things, though. Here, all of a sudden, was someone new at the lodge who took a genuine interest in her and wanted to be friends. They even found out that they both left their homes and families, albeit in very different situations. Now, Dani had found her person, like everyone else. Oftentimes Aubrey had to leave the lodge for a while, and she left Dr. Harris Bonkers with Dani. She even took comfort in caring for her friend's rabbit; the routine was helpful to have in her day and he loved getting extra attention. Having someone on earth didn't replace the ache in her heart for her family, but a shoulder to lean on at the end of the day meant a lot. With that thought, she snapped back to her surroundings as Aubrey, Barclay, and Mama called her name all at once from the hall entrance, the kitchen, and the front door. Setting Dr. Harris Bonkers back on the couch, Dani got up to go see what her friends wanted. There were things worth celebrating in Kepler and at the lodge, and she was going to help make Candlenights what everyone here needed it to be.
Duck Newton was far from a loner, he was on good terms with everyone in town (except Muffy and Winthrop), he just didn't have a lot of close friends. He, Aubrey, and Ned didn't have a choice but to get along due to the nature of their work, but despite Aubrey's tendency to disregard rules that existed for a reason and Ned's difficulty with keeping secrets, Duck considered them his friends. Aubrey was only a couple years older than he was the first time Minerva approached him, and when she learned the world was something different than she thought, she seemed to move forward with an enthusiasm that would have been impossible for Duck then. Of course, now he had allowed Minerva back into his life and started taking his role more seriously, but nothing was going to change his outlook on life. Even fighting monsters, there had to be a practical way to deal with the situation. Duck didn't think he knew everything, though, and the Pine Guard had been able to put their strengths to come up with some good plans. He and Juno had some wild days on the job, but those were nothing compared to fighting sentient water at H2 Woah! That Was Fun after hours. They deserved a bit of a break, and the Candlenights celebration would be a perfect opportunity. Jane, his younger sister, was out of town this year, so it also gave him somewhere else to go for the holiday. It was almost time for Duck to leave, and he went to pick up his Tupperware of french onion soup that had just finished cooling. As he headed out the door, he heard the most familiar voice, right on schedule as always, exclaim: "HAPPY CANDLENIGHTS, DUCK NEWTON!"
Ned Chicane hadn't celebrated Candlenights, or any holiday for that matter, in a long time. When he was still in his life of crime, especially with Boyd, he didn't have the time or interest, and afterwards, he had nobody to celebrate with. Well, Halloween was the biggest day for the Cryptonomica, but that wasn't really a "family time" holiday, and besides, he was working. Maybe spending those times alone was making up in some way for his past. Or he was rationalizing, and there was nothing he could ever do to make that poor girl's life better. He deserved his sorrow, but it wasn't atonement. Then their paths crossed again, but this time he met her, learned her name: Aubrey Little, even became her colleague. Duck Newton also came asking for his ridiculous talking sword back and things got crazier than Ned could ever have imagined. Trying to convince himself it was a dream didn't work, but as the days passed, he didn't want it to be anymore. The work the Pine Guard did meant something; they were protecting people, which he had never done before. He didn't have magic fire powers or a mysterious destiny laid out for him, but with his enchanted Narf blaster and his friends by his side, he had the chance to do good. It was unfamiliar, uncomfortable, but well worth it. The prospect of a holiday with friends still felt like something he didn't deserve, but if everyone wanted him there, who was he to decline their love and generosity? As he parked the Lincoln in the driveway of the lodge, the warm glow of the candles Mama had placed in every window warmed his heart too.Once everyone had arrived, Amnesty Lodge was buzzing with the sounds of friends catching up, the clinking of silverware, and carols played by Moira on the piano. Even Agent Stern came out of his room to get a plate and socialize for a bit. Mama looked out over the scene with a content smile on her face. It was only one night, but was what they all needed to carry on for the next year. She clinked her spoon on her glass and all eyes turned towards her. Never one for wordiness, Mama raised her glass with the heartfelt toast: "To our Lodge family!"

15 Questions, 15 Mutuals
I got tagged by @nowandthane and @asgardianhobbit98. Here's the problem, I don't think I have 15 mutuals. Or if I do, I don't think they remember who I am. SO I'm not going to tag anyone, but if you see this and remember who the heck I am, just reply with like a bird emojo or point at me or just like it or something
Were you named after anyone? My second name is after my mom's best friend. My first name is just because my parents liked the sound of it. It's also an exceptionally Jewish name.
When was the last time you cried? HAWWW I cry all the time. Like every few days. I used to not cry often at all, but lately I've been crying a lot. Mostly at TV. I am a sucker for manipulative TV.
Do you have kids? Nope. Just pets. It will stay that way. I was a nanny and that was enough parenting for me, thank you. Kids are great, don't get me wrong. I adore my nieces and kids in general. I just don't have the health or wealth or desire.
Do you use sarcasm? So I am confused by this question. Are there people who don't? Or is the question just here for some people to answer "no" sarcastically?
What's the first thing you notice about people? Oddly enough, their eyebrows. Probably a mix of "this is how I know what emotions you are displaying" and eyebrow shaming as a unibrowed olive child.
What's your eye color? Dark dark dark brown. Just like, big brown dots.
Scary Movies or Happy Endings? I feel like good scary movies have some levity and happy-ish endings right? But I don't know, I like either scary movies with happy endings, or comedies movies with bitter endings.
Any special talents? Without touching a container, I can tell if a jar is made of glass or plastic, even if they look identical. Also, if something is under 6 feet long, I can tell exactly how many inches it is with about 2 inches of accuracy.
Where were you born? Detroit, USA
What are your hobbies? Cooking, bird watching, drawing, playing games, D&D, reading, writing, snarking with my husband or friends about stuff on the internet and the youths, rock collecting
Have any pets? The worst. Kepler and Archie. I had to stare at Archie for like a solid 20 seconds right now to remember his name. He's that bad. You all know them, you all love them against my better judgement.
What sports do/have you played? I'm 36. I sit. Sometimes I stand. Occasionally I walk to the kitchen, but not competitively.
How tall are you? Short king.
Favorite subject at school? In grade school? Art and science. In College, the best courses I ever took were primate ecology and multimedia ethnography.
Dream Job? Anything that I can do. Literally. I would love to just be able to do something right now in a way that could afford me some sort of sustainable income while not killing me.
I'll tag no one because "well you don't know me, but I know you"

fellow kepler enjoyer here. Pls share your headcanons!! & plug your fic! I’d love to check it out!
Ok first off, here is the fic! It’s a post-canon kepler lives au that is mostly about him actually learning how to be a person and living with what he’s done. I update slower than god but I do update
This fic is full of my headcanons which (in no particular order) include but are not limited to:
- Kepler is not his real surname. He changed it shortly after starting at goddard as part of a process of reinventing himself
- he has a younger brother; younger by about 9 years, who he was the primary caretaker of when they were growing up since their parents were so busy with work most of the time
-he grew up poor and doesn’t like to remember it. This is part of his fascination with certain symbols of refined status later in life
-cutter recruited him straight out of high school. This is part of why he took so long to see how bad goddard was and how much he hated it, I think. Something of a sunk cost fallacy. He was in denial that he would’ve sunk so much of his life into something that ended up failing him so completely. And also, if he were to leave, where would he go? With no college degree and practically no job experience since soon after being recruited the job he was doing was off the record and somewhat illegal, who would hire him?
-when Kepler first approached Jacobi, the flirtation was intentional and manipulative. He knows how to keep people loyal. With Maxwell, all he really needed to do was give her the space and respect she needed, but Jacobi wouldn’t thrive with space. He craved attention and approval, and Kepler was well aware of the effect he would have. It was just little taunts and touches at first. He doesn’t know when he started doing it just to touch him
- Kepler makes some very good soups and stews. And he has a frustratingly wonderful singing voice

heLlo Hi its Me coming to ask you another question, i can’t help it.
I KNOW KNOW
anyways
so you went to college for astrology right? How was that like? I was thinking of doing it because i want a degree and honestly i like astrology.
So any chance if you could tell me your experience with getting the degree and do you need to be really good at maths for it?
OKAY that’s all:)

No you don’t need to be good at math haha! They do sometimes go over mathematical terms when you learn about astronomy but there’s no work you have to do involving math
You do have to pay it’s not for free unfortunately
I did the course online because it’s in Shoreline, Washington and I live too far but if you live near there you have the option to do it in person I’m pretty sure
Basically once you enroll for whichever main course you choose they mail you the books for the courses and you go to online classes every day for 130 weeks
For the electives the times vary since they’re focused on just one specific topic. For the specific electives I chose they were only 5-10 weeks long
Tumblr media
𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐈 𝐭𝐨𝐨𝐤
To get a full diploma I had to take 130 weeks of course study, 115 weeks of required courses, at least 15 weeks of electives, and give a final demonstration of learning
The courses I took were astrological fundamentals-natal chart, astrological fundamentals-prediction, astrological counseling and relationships, astrological professional development, astrological heritage, and astromapping
I took some electives as well including medical astrology, horary astrology, traditional predictive astrology, calling and the soul’s transformation, comparisons and composites, intro to psychological astrology, and more
𝐌𝐲 𝐟𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐬
Astrological Fundamentals - Natal Chart
I thought I knew all the basic information in astrology before taking this course but turns out I did not and I learned a lot of new things as well as lots of info about misconceptions that are made a lot by many fake astrologers online
Astrological Fundamentals - Prediction
This course was for sure my favorite out of all of them because I love learning about predictive astrology and impressing my friends with how accurate it is
Astromapping
I got to learn way more about astrocartography and will definitely be posting more about it now
𝐌𝐲 𝐟𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬
Counseling and Relationships
Talks about compatibility (sexual and romantic), relationship longevity and success, attraction, potential relationships, etc
Hellenistic Astrology
Learned about Derivative Astrology in this class which was really interesting to me. I used to think it was a Sidereal technique but it actually originated from Tropical Astrology
Tumblr media
𝐎𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐎𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬
There’s another course is called Alternative Traditions. I’m not entirely sure what that withholds because I didn’t read about it or take it
There are also over 20 different electives you can take other than the one’s I took but I didn’t have any interest in them
Tumblr media
𝐁𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧 𝐀𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐫
Once you complete the main courses they give you a diploma and you are then considered a certified astrologer!
Once you compete the electives they give you certificates for each elective you complete!
You don’t have to complete all the electives I did to become an astrologer only the main courses and 15 weeks of electives but I took extra classes because I wanted to learn more astrology methods

'Hot Jupiters' may not be orbiting alone Research led by an Indiana University astronomer challenges longstanding beliefs about the isolation of "hot Jupiters" and proposes a new mechanism for understanding the exoplanets’ evolution. While our Jupiter is far away from the sun, hot Jupiters are gas giant planets that closely orbit stars outside our solar system for an orbital period of less than 10 days. Previous studies suggested they rarely have any nearby companion planets, leading scientists to believe that hot Jupiters formed and evolved through a violent process that expelled other planets from the area as they moved closer to their host stars. The research team’s findings reveal that hot Jupiters do not always orbit alone. “Our research shows that at least a fraction of hot Jupiters cannot form through a violent process,” said Songhu Wang, assistant professor of astronomy in the College of Arts and Sciences. “This is a significant contribution to advance our understanding of hot Jupiter formation, which can help us learn more about our own solar system.” Wang presented the results of the research at the June 2023 meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Researchers analyzed the full, four-year data set for hot and warm Jupiters from NASA’s Kepler Mission. Warm Jupiters have a longer orbital period that ranges from 10 to 300 days. Researchers used transit timing variations to determine that at least 12% of hot Jupiters and 70% of warm Jupiters have a nearby planetary companion orbiting their host stars. Wang and his collaborators combined their results with existing observational constraints to propose a new framework for explaining the evolution of hot and warm Jupiters and why some have companion planets. They determined that the makeup of hot and warm Jupiter systems depends on the occurrence of gas giants in the system, which impacts how much the planets interact and migrate. The findings provide a launching point into future research about exoplanets and our solar system’s planets. “The ultimate goal for astronomers is to set our solar system into the bigger picture — 'Are we unique?’” Wang said. “This helps us to understand why we don’t have a hot Jupiter in our solar system.” Additional collaborators are Dong-Hong Wu, lecturer in the Department of Physics at Anhui Normal University, and Malena Rice, 51 Pegasi b Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and incoming professor at Yale University. Wang has long been interested in the configurations and demographics of exoplanets. He uses observational research to try to understand their dynamics and origins, helping astronomers better understand how our solar system fits into a larger cosmic context.

While fans may know him best for his screen work (The X-Files, Californication), musician-actor-author David Duchovny has carved out a larger creative role over the years, authoring six books and releasing three albums while earning rave reviews (and a dedicated fanbase) for his live shows.
His latest album, Gestureland, was released in 2021 during the pandemic. While the feelings on Gestureland are intimate, the music is expansive – it evokes ’70s California pop, alternative rock, folk and country. In its own right, it is timeless music.
‘I wouldn’t go about imitating anyone,’ says Duchovny. ‘But for me it’s about classic rock, the British Invasion, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Aimee Mann — you fall in love with certain sounds.’
With his two earlier releases (2015’s Hell or Highwater and 2017’s Every Third Thought) Duchovny earned critical acclaim; Allmusic called his music ‘eloquent, alt-rock-kissed country-folk in the vein of Wilco and the Wallflowers’ while the Boston Globe praised Duchovny’s voice, noting ‘he sings with a parched resonance and just a hint of rasp. He is rather heartfelt’.
Helping achieve all these sounds: Colin Lee, Mitch Stewart and Pat McCusker, three former college friends from the Berklee College of Music and longtime studio musicians who have worked with Duchovny on all of his records. ‘David is so joyful about making music, and his lyrical approach and his way of looking at songs is like poetry,’ says Lee. ‘He creates stuff that excites us as musicians.’
Since the release of Gestureland, Duchovny released a new novel, Truly Like Lightning, a novella, The Reservoir, and co-authored (with illustrator Phillip Sevy) the graphic novel Kepler. He has also adapted his own novel, Bucky F*cking Dent, to film, premiering it at the Tribeca Film Festival.
But like all good musicians, he’s anxious to get back on the road and perform these new songs live. ‘David has so much energy and charisma, it’s easy for him to carry the show,’ says his bandmate Stewart. ‘I always get such a kick playing live,’ adds the singer. ‘We make our show into a whole evening and take people on a journey. I can’t wait to do a version of this album for a tour.’

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is and always will be the weakest of the four currently extant Indiana Jones films but I will say it’s kind of neat how it’s the only one you can confidently date to a narrow range of possible dates beyond just the year without reading the novelizations or any of the script drafts just based on real world historic nuclear testing in 1957. Which I’m about to get kind of needlessly into so I’ll put the rest of this under a read more:
There’s only nine tests as part of Operation Plumbbob (which by dint of being the series of nuclear tests that covered the summer and early fall of 1957 are the ones I am using as the basis of all of this assumption) that featured nuclear weapons being detonated on towers and only six of those were before the 1957-1958 school year rather than right at the ass end of the ‘56-‘57 school year or well into the first couple months. If you want to assume a time skip of a few months then the opening is anywhere from May 27 1957 to August 31 1957 (given the opening starts on an evening); however going by the franchise’s usual implied “Indy is back to the university within a week or two” it’s really narrowed down further to either August 18’s Shasta test or August 31’s Smoky. Maybe you can push it back to the Diablo test on July 15 or the Kepler test on July 24 if you want to assume that Marshall College has a relatively early school year start.
Kinda odd to realize that the upcoming Dial of Destiny is also going to be the only other one you can confidently date to a specific day thanks to it featuring the New York ticker tape parade for Apollo 11 which interestingly also makes for an August setting, and actually now that I think about it since said ticker tape parade was August 13 1969 that kind of retroactively makes for KotCS’s opening to be one of the July tests instead of one of the August tests unless the rumors about Indy now teaching at a third distinct college that he’s retiring from is true in which case I’m still going to assume Marshall College had a more typical mid-late August to early September academic year start rather than an early August one, unless whatever university stuff we see in DoD is meant to be summer courses which makes that issue moot anyway?

5 Min Read Webb Finds Evidence for Neutron Star at Heart of Young Supernova Remnant The James Webb Space Telescope has observed the best evidence yet for emission from a neutron star. Credits: NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI, C. Fransson (Stockholm University), M. Matsuura (Cardiff University), M. J. Barlow (University College London), P. J. Kavanagh (Maynooth University), J. Larsson (KTH Royal Institute of Technology) NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has found the best evidence yet for emission from a neutron star at the site of a recently observed supernova. The supernova, known as SN 1987A, was a core-collapse supernova, meaning the compacted remains at its core formed either a neutron star or a black hole. Evidence for such a compact object has long been sought, and while indirect evidence for the presence of a neutron star has previously been found, this is the first time that the effects of high-energy emission from the probable young neutron star have been detected. Supernovae – the explosive final death throes of some massive stars – blast out within hours, and the brightness of the explosion peaks within a few months. The remains of the exploding star will continue to evolve at a rapid rate over the following decades, offering a rare opportunity for astronomers to study a key astronomical process in real time. Supernova 1987A The supernova SN 1987A occurred 160,000 light-years from Earth in the Large Magellanic Cloud. It was first observed on Earth in February 1987, and its brightness peaked in May of that year. It was the first supernova that could be seen with the naked eye since Kepler’s Supernova was observed in 1604. About two hours prior to the first visible-light observation of SN 1987A, three observatories around the world detected a burst of neutrinos lasting only a few seconds. The two different types of observations were linked to the same supernova event, and provided important evidence to inform the theory of how core-collapse supernovae take place. This theory included the expectation that this type of supernova would form a neutron star or a black hole. Astronomers have searched for evidence for one or the other of these compact objects at the center of the expanding remnant material ever since. Indirect evidence for the presence of a neutron star at the center of the remnant has been found in the past few years, and observations of much older supernova remnants –such as the Crab Nebula – confirm that neutron stars are found in many supernova remnants. However, no direct evidence of a neutron star in the aftermath of SN 1987A (or any other such recent supernova explosion) had been observed, until now. Image: Supernova 1987A The James Webb Space Telescope has observed the best evidence yet for emission from a neutron star at the site of a well-known and recently-observed supernova known as SN 1987A. At left is a NIRCam (Near-Infrared Camera) image released in 2023. The image at top right shows light from singly ionized argon (Argon II) captured by the Medium Resolution Spectrograph (MRS) mode of MIRI (Mid-Infrared Instrument). The image at bottom right shows light from multiply ionized argon captured by the NIRSpec (Near-Infrared Spectrograph). Both instruments show a strong signal from the center of the supernova remnant. This indicated to the science team that there is a source of high-energy radiation there, most likely a neutron star. NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI, C. Fransson (Stockholm University), M. Matsuura (Cardiff University), M. J. Barlow (University College London), P. J. Kavanagh (Maynooth University), J. Larsson (KTH Royal Institute of Technology) Claes Fransson of Stockholm University, and the lead author on this study, explained: “From theoretical models of SN 1987A, the 10-second burst of neutrinos observed just before the supernova implied that a neutron star or black hole was formed in the explosion. But we have not observed any compelling signature of such a newborn object from any supernova explosion. With this observatory, we have now found direct evidence for emission triggered by the newborn compact object, most likely a neutron star.” Webb’s Observations of SN 1987A Webb began science observations in July 2022, and the Webb observations behind this work were taken on July 16, making the SN 1987A remnant one of the first objects observed by Webb. The team used the Medium Resolution Spectrograph (MRS) mode of Webb’s MIRI (Mid-Infrared Instrument), which members of the same team helped to develop. The MRS is a type of instrument known as an Integral Field Unit (IFU). IFUs are able to image an object and take a spectrum of it at the same time. An IFU forms a spectrum at each pixel, allowing observers to see spectroscopic differences across the object. Analysis of the Doppler shift of each spectrum also permits the evaluation of the velocity at each position. Spectral analysis of the results showed a strong signal due to ionized argon from the center of the ejected material that surrounds the original site of SN 1987A. Subsequent observations using Webb’s NIRSpec (Near-Infrared Spectrograph) IFU at shorter wavelengths found even more heavily ionized chemical elements, particularly five times ionized argon (meaning argon atoms that have lost five of their 18 electrons). Such ions require highly energetic photons to form, and those photons have to come from somewhere. “To create these ions that we observed in the ejecta, it was clear that there had to be a source of high-energy radiation in the center of the SN 1987A remnant,” Fransson said. “In the paper we discuss different possibilities, finding that only a few scenarios are likely, and all of these involve a newly born neutron star.” More observations are planned this year, with Webb and ground-based telescopes. The research team hopes ongoing study will provide more clarity about exactly what is happening in the heart of the SN 1987A remnant. These observations will hopefully stimulate the development of more detailed models, ultimately enabling astronomers to better understand not just SN 1987A, but all core-collapse supernovae. These findings were published in the journal Science. The James Webb Space Telescope is the world’s premier space science observatory. Webb is solving mysteries in our solar system, looking beyond to distant worlds around other stars, and probing the mysterious structures and origins of our universe and our place in it. Webb is an international program led by NASA with its partners, ESA (European Space Agency) and the Canadian Space Agency.
